GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY
WINTER GARDEN The Winter Garden Farmers Market has been declared not only the best in the state — but also the nation. Over the summer, the American Farmland Trust celebrated farmers markets by allowing shoppers from across the country to submit their local market for evaluation. Nearly 7,000 farmer’s markets entered the competition, but the voters ranked Winter Garden’s market as No. 1.
A Nov. 12 celebration marked the achievement. “It was easy to get the vote,” said Dana Brown, of RTP Productions Management, who oversees the market each week. “Almost 75% of the people we asked to vote for us said that they would get their husband, wife, brother, sister, parents to vote. The people who come here wanted to give not just one vote, but 10 or 20.” The competition included several different categories: people’s choice, focus on farmers, healthy food for all, pillar of the community and champion for the environment. The Winter Garden market made a clean sweep of all five categories. SEE MARKET PAGE 4

Rick and Carol Johnson, of the Lake Avalon Rural Settlement, started celebrating their 50th anniversary earlier this summer with a five-week, around-the-country RV trip with their three teenage grandchildren. Their first stop was San Antonio, Texas, where they were married in 1966, and then on to the Grand Canyon, Los Angeles, Monterey, Yosemite, San Francisco, Crater Lake, Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore and more. They continued celebrating Nov. 12, at a family dinner party hosted by their daughters and sons-inlaw, Kimberly and Gregg Walker and Denise and Matt Forschner. Their gift to each other was a new RV.

Girl Scouts Karlen Randle, left, Amber Wilkinson, center, and Taylor Smith, right, spent a Sunday morning planting bushes along the fence line at SpiritHorse at Better Times Farm in Winter Garden.
Difference-makers For their Silver Project, three Girls Scouts planted a hedge at Better Times Farm that will allow its riding-therapy students more privacy.
BRITTANY GAINES STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN A row of 80 baby viburnum shrubs stand guard along the fence line at Better Times Farm. The hedge was a request months in the making that three ninth-grade girls answered. Amber Wilkinson, Taylor Smith and Karlen Randle, with Girl Scout Troop No. 4571 of the Dr. Win Service Unit, banded together several months ago to plan their Silver Award project — an achievement the Girl Scouts can complete only once they become a Cadette. When the trio learned of the farm’s need for a sound barrier between the riding arenas and Avalon Road, they knew it would make a perfect Silver Award project. For months, the busy road not only had become a distraction for the horses but also their riders, some of who suffer from disabilities such as autism and cerebral palsy. “We counted the cars that passed by in an hour, and it was about 200 cars,” Randle said. This is exactly why Elizabeth Oberdick has advocated for some kind of sound barrier along the
fence that backs up to Avalon Road. “I had been asking for a hedge to be able to buffer that noise for the kids,” said Oberdick, who works as the volunteer coordinator and a therapy instructor with SpiritHorse. “So, we were really grateful that they were able to do this.” In addition to regular riding lessons, the farm also operates a nonprofit organization called SpiritHorse at Better Times Farm that provides private, therapeutic riding lessons to children diagnosed with autism, attention deficit disorder, cerebral palsy and other disabilities. For Wilkinson and Randle, helping Better Times Farm was natural: Both girls have taken riding lessons there for years and volunteer at the farm nearly every Sunday. “I help with therapy lessons, and (the rider) is always distracted,” Randle said. “So (the hedge) will help.” In the case of Smith, it was her love of horses and friendship with Wilkinson and Randle that drew her to the project. “It’s going for a good cause,” she said. The planning process required several meetings between the

three girl scouts and representatives from the farm, but once they got approval from both the farm and Girl Scouts, it was full steam ahead. “It was a top-notch idea,” said Wilkinson’s mom, Denise. “For them to come up with this idea, I thought it was deep thinking for them.” For the perfect shrubbery, the girls searched for a bush that would grow quickly, grow tall and wouldn’t break the bank. They settled on viburnum suspensum, a leafy, green bush often used to create hedges. Expected to reach a height between six and 12 feet in just a few years, the shrubs were a perfect fit for the farm’s needs. Together, the three girls raised the money needed to purchase the plants, largely thanks to the support from their parents, and even managed to score a discount at Landscape Nursery Inc. located in Orlando. On Sunday, Sept. 25, the girls and their families arrived at SpiritHorse at Better Times Farm with the 80 shrubs in tow ready for planting. And although planting all 80 bushes seemed like a daunting task, it only took about five hours to finish the job. “I thought it would take a lot longer,” Wilkinson said. While the bushes are barely a foot tall now, everyone is excited to see it slowly take over the fence line. “Just knowing the improvements it’ll make is great,” Wilkinson said. City officials marked another milestone of the redevelopment process Nov. 12 as they officially opened the new parking garage in downtown Winter Garden. As the downtown area has grown and attracted new businesses over the last several years, parking became increasingly limited. “The city decided to revitalize the sidewalks, landscaping, gazebo and the world-famous clock tower,” said City Commissioner Bob Buchanan. “With all the revitalization, businesses decided to show up, which created a need for parking.” The idea of the garage began several years ago, when city leaders began asking Winter Garden residents for permission to build the garage. Getting a consensus took nearly two years, said City Manager Mike Bollhoefer. “To build a project like this takes a lot of people working together,” he said. “But our goal has been to make Winter Garden the best small city in the state of Florida.” And many believe the parking garage will allow the city to continue its track of growth. “The parking garage will enhance the economic vibrancy in downtown Winter Garden and enable new construction,” Buchanan said. But one of the keys to the parking garage’s success was the decision to make it blend with the architecture of downtown. “We wanted to maintain our family friendly, small-town charm,” Buchanan said. “Nobody wanted something that didn’t match the downtown.” Covered in real brick and surrounded by landscaping, the

garage looks nothing like a typical parking garage. Funded by the Community Redevelopment Agency, which receives all of its funds from advalorem property taxes, construction began on April 11, and the building was erected within 38 days. However, the garage wasn’t completed until Sept. 17. “This city has what every city in Florida wants, and you’ve done a phenomenal job on this downtown,” said Bill Finfrock, president of Finfrock, the construction company contracted to build the parking garage. “I predict that you will not regret building the garage. It will have lasting value for years to come.” With three levels of parking, the garage has added more than 500 parking spots to the downtown Winter Garden area. “It’s a lot of building in a little space,” said Justin Gabbard, superintendent of the project. And all that added parking is great news for local businesses and event organizers. “If we didn’t have that parking garage, we couldn’t grow,” said Dana Brown, of RTP Productions Management, who oversees the Winter Garden Farmers Market. The garage is located at 160 S. Boyd St. Contact Brittany Gaines at bgaines@orangeobserver.com.

Winter Garden-Vineland Road. At 4:04 a.m., an officer noticed a female driver slumped over in her seat against the car door. Once the officer made a left-hand turn, he noticed the vehicle remained at the intersection even though the signal turned green. He turned around and positioned his car behind the vehicle and observed the lights cycle through twice, and yet the vehicle still did not move. When the officer walked to the driver’s window, he noticed both the driver and passenger were passed out. After a “sternum rub,” performed by the officer and an assisting officer, both females awoke. When the officer asked the driver where she was, she confidently stated Tampa. When informed she was not in Tampa, she rescinded her answer and said, “I’m sorry. Clermont.” The driver failed the sobriety exercises and was arrested. OCOEE NOV. 4

dise from a JC Penney. A store employee witnessed the man try on Nike shoes and place his old shoes in the shoebox while keeping the new Nike shoes on as he passed all points of sale and exited the store. An employee stopped him and asked him to return to the store. The man confessed to stealing the shoes. OAKLAND NOV. 5
17100 block West Colonial Drive. At 2:28 a.m., police dispatch received numerous calls about a black Mazda driving recklessly with its headlights off, swerving in and out of lanes without signaling and, at one point, driving eastbound in the westbound lanes. Once an officer found the vehicle in question and performed a traffic stop, the male driver was asked where he was. The driver replied he did not know. When asked to step outside the vehicle, the driver struggled, nearly falling on the ground before using the car door to keep balance. After several failed attempts to correctly perform field sobriety exercises, the driver was arrested for driving under intoxication.

Want to lend a helping hand? A
s the holiday season begins, West Orange-area charities and organizations are beginning their big push to help deliver happy memories for those in
need. And although every organization welcomes and values the work of its volunteers, a little coordination can help ensure your and your family’s time is spent in the most effective way possible. BREAD OF LIFE FELLOWSHIP
Each year for Thanksgiving, Bread of Life Fellowship gives the community a chance to get involved and do its part in helping end hunger. BLF partners with Publix Super Markets and local families and community groups to run its annual Food for Families event. This year, Food for Families will provide more than 1,200 families with food for Thanksgiving. BLF has two opportunities for those who want to assist them in packing more than 2,000 boxes of food. On Wednesday, Nov. 23, volunteers will meet at the Ocoee High School cafeteria, unload the food from Publix and local school food drives, sort it all and pack it into boxes. The first shift begins at 7 p.m., and the second shift — when bread arrives to be sorted and boxed — begins at 10 p.m. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring in canned goods to help fill the boxes.
On Thanksgiving day, Thursday, Nov. 24, volunteer drivers will line up in the Ocoee High bus loop to get maps, directions and boxes of food to be delivered to each family’s home. This begins at 8 a.m. and ends when every box is delivered. Volunteers do not have to register to help out and are encouraged to show up as they are. For more information on Food for Families, call (407) 654-7777, email office@ breadoflifefellowship.com or visit breadoflifefellowship.com. WINTER GARDEN FOOD BASKET DRIVE
Each year, the city of Winter Garden sponsors a Thanksgiving food basket drive for the Christian Service Center in Ocoee. Members of the community interested in participating are asked to put together baskets filled with all of the ingredients necessary for a traditional Thanksgiving feast. Required food items for each basket — it can be a box or a laundry basket — are: two types
of canned vegetables; white or sweet potatoes; stuffing mix; bread, rolls or roll mix; cranberry sauce; a dessert; and either a turkey or $10 gift card to Publix or Winn-Dixie for the family to buy a turkey. The turkeys and other perishable items must be placed outside the basket for refrigerating. Optional items include apples, brown sugar, canned pumpkin, coffee, sugar, evaporated milk, flour, pie crust and onions. To ensure you pack enough food, assume that a family is comprised of six people; contact the Christian Service Center if you are interested in doing a basket for a specific family demographic. All baskets must be dropped off to the CSC — located at 300 W. Franklin St., Ocoee — by Thursday, Nov. 17. For more information, call (407) 656-6678.
WINDERMERE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FOOD DRIVE
For the last six years, the Windermere Chamber of Commerce has collected gift cards for local families in need so they can enjoy a hot meal together on Thanksgiving. There are still about 30 families on the Chamber of Commerce’s list who need a Thanksgiving dinner. Gift cards to either restaurants or grocery stores should be no less than $25, to ensure the family can enjoy a full meal. The cards should be mailed to Windermere Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 382, Windermere, FL 34786. For more information, call (321) 689-6345.

Local market earns national honor CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
“Receiving this award only validates what we already believed about our farmers market, and we appreciate the American Farmland Trust bringing awareness to local farmers and how essential they are to our way of life,” Winter Garden City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said. “Our farmers market creates an amazing atmosphere of great produce in a small-town social setting. People count on the great farmers market vendors, and those vendors do not disappoint.” But it’s not the first time that the market has received state and national recognition. When the American Farmland Trust held this competition three years ago, the Winter Garden Farmers Market came out on top. “I’ve seen a huge difference in growth,” said American Farmland Trust Vice President of Development and External Relations Susan Sink, who came to the market three years ago to present the market with its awards. “It’s just tremendous. We congratulate the people for being behind this farmer’s market.” For many shoppers, making a stop at the market is an everySaturday event. For others, it’s an every-other-week visit. “It’s awesome,” said Orlando resident Luiz Prestes, who often finds an excuse to stop by the market. “It’s a (really) good experience, and there’s (really) good energy.” And vendors love the market just as much as the shoppers do. “We love it here,” said vendor Tina Woodall, who has worked the market with her husband for two years at their stall, Sweets for You. “We love Winter Garden,

Despite concerns, Winter Garden approves rezoning for new Maxey

The new school will have space for 400 more students, but city leaders have concerns about space reserved for portables. GABBY BAQUERO STAFF WRITER
City leaders paved the way for a new Maxey Elementary School, but the approvals did not come without some concerns. City commissioners approved Nov. 10 the annexation, future land-use designation and rezoning of the property for the site, along with an interlocal agreement outlining permitted roadway access for certain vehicles at the old Maxey site. The new Maxey, slated to open in August 2018, will be located on 8.82 acres on Story Road and Ninth Street. Plans from Orange County Public Schools show the two-story building will be about 75,000 square feet, and the lot will have 144 parking spaces. Although the old Maxey only houses 250 students, the new elementary will accommodate 650. However, OCPS also plans to reserve space for at least six portables — a proposition for which some commissioners expressed distaste. “I, for one, don’t like them (portables),” said former Winter Garden city commissioner Harold Bouler. “I see no necessary reason why they have to be there. Plan ahead, and we can make it happen. … We are too smart for just business as usual, so let’s try all we can, do all we can, to make sure

we don’t have those ugly-looking trailers.” Winter Garden Mayor John Rees said he does not find it fair for the students who might need to contend with rain when walking to their next class. There was brief talk of including a prohibition of portables as a condition, but Tyrone Smith, an OCPS representative, informed commissioners that OCPS adopted a general policy to not accept any agreements that forbids portables. “The portables are necessary to allow the School Board to deal with enrollment trends, which fluctuate very rapidly,” Smith said. “(The commissioners) seem to think it’s a very simple process to just build a building and solve the problem but, unfortunately, that has a cost associated with it.” The portables were not the only issue that concerned commissioners. Some were concerned with the future use of the old Maxey site, which Smith said is being considered as a potential site for a bus depot. “We have not made a decision on what will happen at the old Maxey,” Smith said. “We have to evaluate the site and take input from our stakeholders, internal agencies and departments inside of OCPS on what their needs are for a facility or a location.” Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com.

your favorite book as a child? Do you remember a loved one reading it to you night after night? There are children in West Orange County who don’t have books to escape into or haven’t had the opportunity to experience the thrill of opening a brandnew book. The Observer Media Group’s Reading Reindeer is ready once again to do its part in collecting new books to be given to needy children at Christmastime. The Observer is partnering with Healthy West Orange to help reach its goal of 5,000 books. New books for children from infancy through middle school are being accepted for this annual literacy project. Last year, Reading Reindeer distributed more than 5,000 books. They are distributed to 16 organizations: Edgewood Children’s Ranch, Maxey Community Center, Winter Garden Children’s Health Center, Migrant Early Education Program of Orange County Public Schools, Matthew’s Hope, West Orange Neighborhood Center for Families, Play and Learn Day School, Resurrection Catholic Church, St. Jude Catholic Church, Head Start and prekindergarten program at Maxey Elementary School, Center for Drug-Free Living, Docs for Tots at Health Central, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Winter Garden and the Ocoee and Winter Garden police departments’ toy giveaway programs, as well as the children served by the West Orange Chris-

After performing the show at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Broad said the Garden Theatre also gives the Orlando Ballet performers a different kind of experience. “We’re very excited,” said Broad, who will be filling the role of Gaston at the show. “We love Winter Garden. It’s a small, intimate space and brings a whole different reaction and energy to the performers.” When Broad took the challenge of writing and choreographing his own ballet several years ago, he decided to try his hand with “Beauty and the Beast.” “Of course I watched the film growing up, and Disney wrote it perfectly,” Broad said. “There’s a cherished, beloved feeling people have toward it, so it was important to include those morals and charitable moments with the characters.” Before writing his ballet, Broad studied the Disney film, the old Brothers Grimm tale, a French version of the story and even a Japanese rendition. “I decided it was OK to go dark and mix it with the happy and light,” Broad said about his version of the tale. “That’s what makes it this great show.” When composing the ballet’s music, Broad took a different tactic. He would watch the Disney film on mute and create melodies and harmonies to accompany the character’s movements.
The key to writing the ballet, Broad said, was getting everything to blend. Broad’s version of “Beauty and the Beast” includes all the familiar characters — Belle, Gaston, Lumière, Cogsworth and the Beast — plus a few new faces, including Belle’s sister and two jester-like characters at the castle. The role of Belle was given to Kate Robichaux, who said that getting to dance as Belle was a dream come true. “It’s every little girl’s dream to be a Disney princess,” she said. “And I love Belle’s story. She doesn’t really fit in, but she has a good head on her shoulders and such a good heart.” Robichaux said going from the large stage at the Dr. Phillips Center to the smaller one at the Garden Theatre can be challenging for the dancers. “You have to keep dancing as big as it looked on that big stage,” she said. “You have to maintain the energy.” This weekend’s show is not the full, two-act show that Broad originally wrote. Instead, he adapted it to create a shorter, hourlong show which will work better in the Garden Theatre, he said. One of his favorite moments in the show is the moment that the Beast catches Belle looking at his rose. “It’s the part where everything culminates,” Broad said. “There’s all this emotion he’s been feeling and her confusion. It’s his tension, and you feel bad for both of them.”

WINTER GARDEN The Winter Gar-
den Lions Club was established in 1946 and has been dedicated to serving others and improving the quality of life for the disadvantaged. Through Project Right to Sight, members collect used prescription eyeglasses, lenses, reading glasses, sunglasses and cases, which are stored in a warehouse in Ocoee. Once they are cleaned, they are given to adults in Central Florida and to Feed the Children, which provides glasses in thirdworld countries. “I always love the story of one of our mission trips (carrying) glasses to Africa, I believe, and they passed out glasses to people and people lined up for days to get medical help for glasses,” Lion Nancy Wiggins said. The Winter Garden club promotes diabetes health by conducting screenings at various community events, and a hearing board meets regularly to review requests for hearing aids, as well. Donning their gold and purple vests, the Lions are a visible presence at community events. They are probably best known for the annual Easter egg hunt at Newton Park. For years, the organization has participated in Adopt-aPrecinct, and members volunteer at the polling location at Tanner Hall. And three times a year, the club packs boxes and distributes food during the holidays with

One member, Nancy Bekemeyer Walker, has been involved with the Winter Garden Lions her entire life, starting with accompanying her parents to the meetings when she was a child. The FHSAA State Playoffs came to Ocoee for the first time Nov. 11, with the Ocoee High Knights hosting the Bartram Trail Bears in the first round of the Class 7A State Playoffs. Despite the historic nature of the evening for the program, coach Ben Bullock’s Knights were no match for the three-headed monster of a quarterbacking corps that the Bears brought to Ocoee. Bartram Trail’s Joey Gatewood, Jordan Smith and Riley Smith all took snaps and, combined with a strong performance from running back Devin Ellison, helped the Bears to rattle off 45-unanswered points after the Knights had taken a 13-7 lead in the second quarter. Senior B.J. Bohler scored both touchdowns for Ocoee, including 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Knights finished their historic 2016 campaign — one that included the program’s first district title — with a 7-4 record. While Friday night was a somber occasion in Ocoee, Foundation Academy was celebrating in Deltona. After watching Trinity Christian score touchdowns on their first two offensive plays, Foundation Academy reeled off 52 unanswered points and defeated the Eagles 59-14 in a Class 2A regional semifinal at the Dewey O. Boster Sports Complex. Dillon Hall scored three touchdowns for the Lions (7-4), while the Foundation defense stepped up to handle Trinity Christian’s dynamic quarterback, Amorie Archibald. “It was tough to simulate SEE LIONS PAGE 17

Initiative teaches diversity Courtney Russo SPONSORED BY MARK’S FLOORS
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15
As a freshman, West Orange High diver Courtney Russo placed seventh in the state in the girls 1-meter dive at the FHSSA Swimming and Diving Championships Nov. 5 in Stuart. Russo, who competes at the club level for YCF Diving, is now primed for an impressive career in her remaining three seasons of varsity competition.
What was it like making it all the way to state as a freshman? It was exciting making it as a freshman, because not many freshmen make it to state. How long have you been diving, and how did you get into it? About three years. I was a gymnast, and then I decided to try diving one day. What’s the highest dive you have attempted? I’ve dived from 10 meters. It took me probably about a year-and-a-half to get up there. The first time, I was excited, but I was also really nervous to try it for the first time.
THE BASICS SCHOOL: West Orange CLASS: Freshman AGE: 14 HOMETOWN: Orlando HEIGHT: 5-foot-2 CLUB TEAM: YCF Diving
Why do you think you’ve had such success so early in your diving career? I always try and make the corrections my coaches give me at practice, and I practice every day and work hard. What is your favorite memory from this season? I think it was states — having fun with my friends and doing well. Who is one of your role models? I look up to my coach and (former West Orange diver) Victoria Moretti. What is your favorite subject in school? My favorite subject is science. I just find it interesting. It’s interesting learning about genetics and all that stuff. Do you have a favorite television show you like to watch? I like “Grey’s Anatomy.” If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you want to go? Probably Hawaii. — STEVEN RYZEWSKI
Teams from around the state competing in the “Unified” flag football tournaments, including two teams from Lakeview Middle School in Winter Garden, were doing more than just trying to win on the scoreboard — they were working to foster a better, more inclusive environment. Special Olympics’ Unified initiative pairs traditional Special Olympics athletes with intellectual disabilities with partners, or peer volunteers without an intellectual disability, to play on the same team and compete alongside each other. “The Unified theme is that we live unified, so we play unified,” said Tyrone Adams, a Lakeview Middle School teacher who also volunteers and coaches the school’s Senior Unified team. What that translates to on the field is that within the five-onfive flag football games, each team will have three traditional Special Olympics athletes and two volunteer partners at all times. There are rules to keep the partners from dominating the game — they are not allowed to pass to one another, for instance — but otherwise, the only way to tell players apart is by the numbers on their jerseys. Athletes wear even numbers, and partners wear odd numbers. The end product is that traditional Special Olympics athletes, many of whom would normally not have the opportunity to play team sports with peers without disabilities and represent their school, get to do
ONLINE
so. In turn, the peer volunteers get to interact with classmates they normally might not know. The result is a learning experience for all involved. “Let’s teach diversity; let’s teach that our athletes are regular like you and me, they like to be ‘weekend warriors,’” Laurie Chmielewski, the training director for Special Olympics in Orange County. “(The partners) are coached just like the athletes. We play as a team, and they complement each other.” The Unified concept has proven to be popular at Lakeview Middle, according to Adams, in part because it is not viewed as traditional Special Olympics competitions intended only for students with intellectual disabilities. That other students without a disability can get involved and work together with their peers has led to increased interest in competing for the school’s Unified sports programs. “I don’t really say ‘Special Olympics,’ because there is a stigma that comes with that,” Adams said. “(Instead), I can introduce it as ‘Hey, this kid plays Unified flag football with us.’” The peer volunteers who have given the program a shot include Hannah Sauers and DeVaughn Clarke — who both say they have enjoyed the experience and making new friends. “I’ve enjoyed it — even if we don’t win, we have fun,” said Sauers, 13. “Some of the boys on our team — we don’t usually talk (at school), but now we do.” Conversely, the athletes get
the valuable experience of being part of a team. “My favorite part is that we get to play sports, and everybody has good team spirit,” said Angelyka Roldan, 13. In addition to feeling like they are part of a team, Chmielewski said Special Olympics is increasingly focused on keeping its athletes active, in general — something that is valuable to everyone, disability or not. Chmielewski cites the example of John David Haywood, a Dr. Phillips graduate who is 33 years old and intellectually disabled, and the active lifestyle he leads. Haywood, who was the team manager for the varsity basketball team while in school at Dr. Phillips High, regularly swims and goes cycling in addition to his role on teams in Special Olympics competition. “Special Olympics is about taking care of the health and well-being of the athlete,” Chmielewski said. “(Having) sports and a coach and regular team practices only helps that and promotes that. So we try to teach them (to be active) on their own.” Add to that that the Unified concept creates situations where a partner quarterback may throw a touchdown pass to an athlete receiver, or viceversa, and it really is icing on the cake. “They’re helping one another and they’re talking to one another,” Adams said. “It’s a win-win, man.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

(Archibald’s) speed in practice, and we were coming off the bye week,” Foundation head coach Brad Lord said. “We were out of place in our gaps, and we knew if he hits the crease, he’s gone. But then we did a good job to shut him down.” Thanks to the victory, the Lions now will take on district rival Victory Christian in the regional finals for a second consecutive year. Victory defeated Foundation Academy earlier this season on Oct. 14, 24-16, to effectively decide the district title. Nevertheless, Lord is optimis-
tic his boys will be ready when the two teams line up on Friday with a trip to the state semifinals on the line — as long as they execute. “We can’t turn the ball over, and we’ve got to tighten things up,” Lord said. “As far as teams go, I’m not worried about them (the Storm), because I think we’re just as good. Six turnovers in that first game was the difference. If we don’t have any, we’re going to win the game. I keep telling people there are really five or so teams in 2A that can win the whole thing, and I think we’re one of them.” Correspondent Chris Mayer contributed to this report.

STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN For Independence and Hamlin residents, the wait is over: The new Walmart Supercenter on New Independence Parkway is here. The 190,000-square-foot facility opened Wednesday, Nov. 16. The celebration also included presentations of $4,000 in grants from Walmart to local community groups, including Winter Garden Police Athletic League and Give Kids the World Village in Kissimmee. “We want to be the store of the community and be a good neighbor,” said Aaron Brothers, store manager. “We are excited to open and be a part of the Winter Garden community just in time for the holidays.” Brothers has been with the company for 18 years, having started as a part-time associate and worked his way up the chain. He most recently managed two stores in Texas before moving to the Winter Garden area four months ago to open and manage the Winter Garden store. “I like all the benefits Walmart has to offer, and there’s never a dull moment,” he said. “Working with people and the things that Walmart has to offer when taking care of our customers and associates is something that makes me feel like this is the place for me, and this is where I want to be.” The new store has some unique community charm, having incorporated bits of the surrounding area in the design process. There

It helps us out with keeping customers in this community, they don’t have to go so far.” More self-checkout lanes have been added and equipped with Walmart Pay, which works with a downloadable smartphone app. It has all the works of the typical Walmart Supercenter — a phar-

The man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence indeed is the Lord, is blessed. He will be like a tree planted by water: it sends its roots out toward a stream, it doesn’t fear when heat comes, and its foliage remains green. It will not worry in a year of drought or cease producing fruit. - Jeremiah 17:7-8 (HCSB)
