few days each week, my wife and I like to take a walk around our neighborhood in the evening. It’s cooler after the sun sets (which inexplicably is still a consideration … in November), and a mile or so under our feet gives us time to shake off the stressors of the day. And in this time of year, it’s also a chance to check out all our neighbors’ holiday decorations. Cheesy and Norman Rockwellian as it sounds, the soft glow and twinkling still warms my heart — just as it did when I was a child. I know we’re still a week out from Thanksgiving, but I’m here to tell you: It’s never too early to put up your decorations! And I’ll let you in on a little secret: One of our more subtle Christmas pieces has been on our living room wall for two years and counting. I’m sure many of you can’t wait for 2020 to end, but I want to caution you: Do not wish away the most wonderful time of the year. We have mere weeks left, and I believe we all would regret not making the most of them. It’s in this spirit that we present to you our 2020 Holiday Gift Guide. As always, it offers a comprehensive calendar of holiday events; information on shipping deadlines; a round-up of popular holiday tunes; and much more. More importantly, this year, we’ve compiled a catalog of gift ideas — all from West Orange- and Southwest Orange-area small businesses and entrepreneurs — for everyone on your list. We are
blessed to live in a community with so many fascinating and wonderful mom-and-pops, and this year, I challenge you to delete that Amazon app from your phone, take a look at some of these suggestions and find something truly unique. Our guide includes ideas from West Orange mainstays such as Matthew’s Hope, Wheel Works and DG Doughnuts. But this year, we’ve also chosen to include many ideas from home-based entrepreneurs. Many are furloughed or laid-off Disney cast members who have taken their talents and spun them into incredible new business ventures. And all are more original than anything you can get with Prime shipping. And best of all: When you choose to shop local, your gift of giving doubles. Not only will you find a perfect gift for your recipient, but also, your purchase will benefit someone in our community — perhaps even a neighbor. Furthermore, as you make your holiday plans, consider utilizing offerings from local restaurants, as well. Windermere’s Dixie Cream Cafe is offering catering for Thanksgiving (you won’t be disappointed; I know from experience), and the Rotary Club of Dr. Phillips is offering a Restaurant Passport that offers savings at local eateries. The city of Winter Garden announced recently a partnership with Hownd to help boost support for local businesses. “The pandemic has taken a tremendous toll on local businesses, so everyone benefits from shopping local this season instead — businesses and consumers,” Hownd CEO Brandon Willey says. “Shopping local is an easy, smart and essential thing to do — now more than ever.” No one expected the 2020 we all got, and much of it was beyond our control. But as we embark on the holidays, we have choices we can make to ensure the hope and joy of the season outshine the last eight months.

Charcuterie board adds elegance to holiday festivities
E
xtravagant charcuterie boards, elegantly displayed on a wood cutting board or marble tray, are all the rage lately, for their simple preparation, savory taste and colorful feast for the eyes. Four Seasons Resort Orlando Executive Chef Fabrizio Schenardi, originally from Torino, Italy, is an expert at charcuterie. He makes his own cured meats often for the menu at Ravello, the resort’s Italian restaurant. As you prepare to celebrate the holiday season, Schenardi offers these tips that can help you create a charcuterie board that is as dazzling as it is delicious. Incorporate a variety of cured meats: prosciutto, mortadella, salame, bresaola, lonza and speck. “We use speck (lightly smoked pork) the most, imported direct from Italy,” Schenardi says. “Sometimes, we like to produce our own in-house charcuterie, such as duck prosciutto, porchetta, nduja and salame cotto.” Schenardi’s favorite is prosciutto “the king” di Parma or San Daniele, sliced very thin. He notes bresaola is made with beef meat seasoned with lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil and black pepper, and recommends porchetta paired with a side of toasted olives. Add a mix of breads to the board, such as grissini (bread stick), focaccia and taralli, an Italian flat bread. Consider incorporating crackers or breads that have sesame seeds or poppy seeds for additional taste. For color and flavor, add grilled and marinated vegetables such as artichokes, eggplant, bell pepper and olives. “I don’t particularly like fruit on my board, with the exception of fresh figs, cantaloupe and grapes,” Schenardi says.
CANNELLINI BEAN AND ROSEMARY PURÉE DIP by Chef Schenardi This dip pairs nicely with charcuterie and cheese and will be a wonderful accompaniment to any charcuterie board display. INGREDIENTS 1 cup (8 ounces) cooked cannellini beans (can be canned) 2 pieces of crushed garlic, lightly sautéed in olive oil 1/2 cup (3.5 ounces) extra virgin olive oil 1 lemon (juice only) 1 fresh stem of rosemary Sea salt and pepper to taste 1 pinch of sweet paprika
He also suggests adding nuts such as walnuts, pistachio and hazelnuts. Cheeses are a must to pair with the meats, and Schenardi recommends fontina, scamorza, gorgonzola, frico, parmigiana-reggiano, and taleggio. “We serve our cheeses with homemade jam and marmalade, or a roasted garlic and cannellini bean spread with rosemary,” he says. When mixing cheese and meat, Schenardi says it is important to reflect a variety and difference of texture. “Usually, I like to pick three
cheeses — one soft such as ricotta — and mix it with olive oil and herbs, served with flat bread; one hard cheese, frico, paired with honey; and one semisoft such as toma, served with roasted bell pepper compote,” he says. For serving, Schenardi prefers displaying the items on a wooden board or a terracotta plate. “It gives it a homier look and is refined at the same time,” he says. “Charcuterie should have a natural look when on a plate, and needs to be touched as little as possible to maintain the fragrance and nice display. Also, it is very important
to cut cheese and charcuterie just before you serve it. (That keeps) the meats moist and keep the natural color fresh.” Weave in the various different vegetables, fruits and nuts around the meats and cheeses on the board for a colorful, enticing appetizer that is sure to be a hit at your next gathering. Individual portions also can be made on smaller boards or plates, and for a festive touch, sprigs of holly, cranberry sauce, and candied nuts can be incorporated. Mini twinkle lights can also be added around the board for a beautiful presentation.
METHOD • Purée the cannellini bean with the garlic, add the extra virgin olive oil, then add the lemon juice. Chop the rosemary and add it to the cannellini bean purée. Adjust salt and pepper, add the paprika. • Serve cold; it can last up to three days in the refrigerator.

’Tis the season to stay safe
JOIN US IN CELEBRATING
W
ith the hustle and bustle of the holiday season comes, unfortunately, more opportunities for dangerous situations.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office offers these tips to help you and loved ones enjoy the holidays free of accidents and crime.
n Have packages delivered to your office. Instead of having your items wait at your front door all day, consider having them delivered to your place of business. Some shippers also offer to hold packages at their locations.
butt should be sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles. Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to expose the fresh wood. This allows for better water absorption and will help to keep your tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.
THE SOUNDS OF THE SEASON. WHEN YOU ARE SHOPPING
Whether you’re out for an evening in downtown Winter Garden or across town at Mall at Millenia, make sure you stay aware of what’s going on around you. Often, long lists, long lines and busy stores can cause shoppers to let their guards down. n Park in a well-lighted space, and be sure to lock the car, close the windows and hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk.
n Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay with bank or credit cards, or even your phone or watch when you can.
n Don’t overburden yourself with packages. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse close to your body — not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket.
WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING A PACKAGE
In West Orange, porch package poachers are a year-round concern. However, with an increase in shopping around the holidays, the opportunities for such criminal activity will increase.
n Track your packages. FedEx, UPS and the United States Postal Service all offer tracking services that will tell you when a package is due to arrive. Amazon’s own delivery service also can alert you immediately when a package arrives on your doorstep or in your mailbox.
n If you’re shopping with children, teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if you get separated.
WHEN YOU ARE TRAVELING
As you pack your bags for that vacation to see extended family, take some time to secure your home before you leave.
n Ensure all doors — especially ones seldom used — and windows are secured.
n Consider purchasing some app-controllable timers, lightbulbs or other such devices. These will allow you to turn on lights periodically to deter burglars. n App-enabled camera systems and other products, such as a Ring doorbell, allow you to have a live video feed of your home.
n When using candles, stay in the same room with burning candles — never leave them burning unattended. Place candles out of reach of children and pets, and keep wicks trimmed to one quarter inch. n Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use. To hold lights in place, string them through hooks or insulated staples — not nails or tacks. Never pull or tug lights to remove them.
WHEN YOU ARE DECORATING
n When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. The tree should be green, needles should be hard to pull from branches, and when bent between your fingers, they do not break. The trunk

Staying safe during holiday travel Although many families have made plans to celebrate the holidays virtually this year, if you do plan to travel this season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer the following tips and considerations to help keep you and your loved ones safe. For more information, visit cdc.gov.
n When around others, stay at least 6 feet (about two arms lengths) from other people who are not from your household. It is important to do this everywhere, both indoors and outdoors.
GENERAL RULES n Don’t travel if you are sick or if you have been around someone with COVID-19 in the past 14 days. Don’t travel with someone who is sick.
n Wear a mask to keep your nose and mouth covered when you are outside of your home.
n Does your destination have requirements or restrictions for travelers? Some state, local and territorial governments have requirements, such as requiring people to wear masks and requiring those who recently traveled to stay home for up to 14 days. Check state, territorial, tribal and local public health websites for information before you travel. If you are traveling internationally, check the destination’s Office of Foreign Affairs or Ministry of Health for details about entry requirements and restrictions for arriving travelers, such as mandatory testing or quarantine.
n Wear masks during travel. This recommendation includes passengers and workers on airplanes, trains, ships, ferries, subways, taxis and ride shares, and at transportation hubs such as airports and stations. BEFORE YOU TRAVEL n Is COVID-19 spreading at your destination? The more cases at your destination, the more likely you are to get infected during travel and spread the virus to others when you return.
DURING TRAVEL n Wear a mask to keep your nose and mouth covered when in public settings, including on public transportation and in transportation hubs such as airports and stations.
n Do you live with someone who might be at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19? If you get infected while traveling, you can spread the virus to loved ones when you return, even if you don’t have symptoms. n Are you at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19? Anyone can get ill from the virus that causes COVID-19, but older adults and people of any age with certain underlying medical conditions are at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
n Avoid close contact by staying at least 6 feet apart (about two arm lengths) from anyone who is not from your household. n Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer (with at least 60% alcohol). n Avoid contact with anyone who is sick.
n Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. n Traveling abroad? Check CDC’s COVID-19 Travel Recommendations by Destination before planning your trip. AFTER YOU TRAVEL You may have been exposed to COVID-19 on your travels. You may feel well and not have any symptoms, but you can be contagious without symptoms and spread the virus to others. You and your travel companions (including children) pose a risk to your family, friends, and community for 14 days after you were exposed to the virus. Regardless of where you traveled or what you did during your trip, take these actions to protect others from getting sick after you return:
n Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer (with at least 60% alcohol). n Watch your health and look for symptoms of COVID-19. Take your temperature if you feel sick. n Follow state, territorial, tribal and local recommendations or requirements after travel.
21
CONSIDERATIONS FOR TYPES OF TRAVEL n AIR TRAVEL. Air travel requires spending time in security lines and airport terminals, which can bring you in close contact with other people and frequently touched surfaces. Most viruses and other germs do not spread easily on flights because of how air circulates and is filtered on airplanes. However, social distancing is difficult on crowded flights, and sitting within 6 feet of others, sometimes for hours, may increase your risk of getting COVID-19. n BUS OR TRAIN TRAVEL. Traveling on buses and trains for any length of time can involve sitting or standing within 6 feet of others, which may increase your risk of getting COVID-19. n CAR TRAVEL. Making stops along the way for gas, food or bathroom breaks can put you and your traveling companions in close contact with other people and frequently touched surfaces. n RV TRAVEL. You may have to stop less often for food or bathroom breaks, but RV travel usually means staying at RV parks overnight and getting gas and supplies at other public places. These stops may put you and those with you in the RV in close contact with others.

TIPPING POINT
The
How to
RECYCLE
after the holidays TREE TAKEDOWN Orange County residents can place live Christmas trees at the curb on your yard-waste collection day for recycling. Trees more than 6 feet tall should be cut in half. Remove all ornaments, decorations and stands before placing at the curb. Artificial trees are not collected with yard waste. ORNAMENTAL OPTIONS Looking for more ornaments for your Christmas tree? Ornaments made out of recycled materials are becoming more popular. If you’re feeling crafty, you can even make your own. Save burned-out lightbulbs from your tree, and use a glue gun to make them into a star shape.
RECYCLE WRAPPING PAPER We all have at least one family member who makes a mad dash to scoop up bows and ribbons on presents to save for the next year. But what about saving wrapping paper? In some cases, wrapping paper can be recycled, but it must not contain non-paper additives such as glitter and dyes. Most labels will include the recycling symbol if it can be recycled. Also, remove all tape from the wrapping paper before placing it in your recycling container.
IT’S A WRAP Extend the theme of recycling to gift wrap with these reusable materials: n Newspapers n Fabric n Brown paper bags n Gift boxes n Baskets n Fabric ribbons
During the holiday season, it is customary to bestow extra tips to service people with whom you come in contact often. Follow these tips on whom to tip and what kinds of tips are acceptable. MAIL CARRIER Although U.S. Postal Service workers cannot accept cash tips, they can accept non-monetary gifts (generally of up to $20 in value). Homemade gifts, such as fudge or jam, can add a personal touch. CONCIERGE Tip $10 to $100. Keep in mind that you do not have to spread the tips equally. Those who serve you more should get a larger tip. A bottle of wine is a nice touch. BEAUTICIAN Tip the cost of one haircutting session. If the same person who cuts your hair also styles and colors it, you may consider tipping more. COUNTRY CLUB STAFF Tip $50 for regular servers, locker-room personnel, front-desk employees and golf professionals.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
On-site services include X-Rays, IV rehydration, drug screens, work & DOT physicals, auto accident evaluation & injury care, and FDA approved Covid-19 testing.
Office Now Open 9am-7pm 7 Days a Week
Walk-In Clinic
GARBAGE COLLECTOR Tip $15 to $30 to each person. However, if your collector is a truck driver who operates a machine to collect the trash, there is no need to tip. BABYSITTER One night’s pay, plus a gift from your child/children. GARDENER Tip $20 to $50. However, if you see a different gardener each week, don’t worry about tipping. TEACHER Tip $25 to $100. Gift certificates make good tips. And, for something more special, you may coordinate with other parents to give one large group gift. COACH/ACTIVITY INSTRUCTOR Gifts of $25 or less. Also, a personalized gift from your child is a good idea.
TIPS ON TIPPING
1
Start by making a list of all the people who provide services or care for your family. This list should include health care providers, housekeepers, personal trainers, babysitters, coaches and more.
2
Don’t tip outside of your budget; substituting a handmade gift or small gift for a monetary gift is acceptable.
3
Include a short, handwritten note.
