HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR OWNERS Fall is a great opportunity to get outside, take a look around and make notes of any maintenance needs that you see on your property. Keeping your property well maintained coincides with property values. Baldwin Park has been described as vibrant, prestigious, shiny and new-looking. The first home was moved into in 2003, so some areas of the community are starting to show their age. Just because a property isn’t new doesn’t mean it can’t still be beautiful and well-maintained. Homeowners should do their part to keep the neighborhood one of Orlando’s finest. The below is a list of items to get you started on maintenance needs. n Fences: Does your fence need to be cleaned (power-washed) or painted/stained and repaired? n Grass/sod: Should always be neat (cut, edged and trimmed). Grass or weeds including grass growing over and along the curb, in the street or alleyway, should be remedied. Weeds in the yard and in landscape beds must be addressed and a treatment plan in place. n House: Does your house need power-washed or painted? Are there obvious repairs needed? Check the roof, siding, gutters, screens and trim for any problems. n Landscape: Bushes should be trimmed and kept uniform. Bushes or plantings along the alleyway must be kept at a height of 30 inches and planted two feet from the pavements edge. n Driveways, sidewalks and porches: Should be power-washed and repaired if necessary.

EXTERIOR CHANGES

Any exterior change to your home — including but not limited to painting, replacing or adding gutters, roofs, windows, plant materials/sod/ trees, accessories, structural changes, etc. — requires ARC approval. All applications can be found at baldwinparknetwork.com under Home/ Association Information/Residential Owners Association/Residential Architectural Review Committee/ARC Forms. If you have questions, please call ARC Coordinator at (407) 740-5838 or email ARC@baldwinparkpoa.com.

BALDWIN PARK LIVING | NOVEMBER 2021

n Grace Hopper women’s pool bath mirror: The pool bath mirror is being replaced. n High Park large pavilion light painting: The lights were painted. n High Park trashcan painting: Seven trashcans located at High Park Facility Center were painted. n Door handles, hinges, door closures and cylinder replacements: A proposal from Armstrong Lock is being obtained for Grace Hopper and Enders. It was schedule to be brought back to the October meeting. n Pool house bath stalls: A proposal to prime and paint the bath stalls in the pool baths is being obtained. This will be a cheaper option than replacement. These proposals will be brought back to a future meeting. n Elevator repair: Thyssenkrupp, the elevator contractor, ordered the parts, and the repair has been made. n Sidewalk grinds: Sidewalk grinds at Corrine Commons and High Park were executed. n Landscape replacements: Plant installations at the following parks/mews have been completed: Zoysia repairs, root pruning and addition of drainage at south end of High Park; the approved shade-tolerant plants for Corrine Commons were denied by the ARC — management has asked for a proposal to repair the Bermuda in these areas. The following approved landscape replacements are being scheduled: Bermuda repairs at Union Park; Bermuda sod underwater and not available. Once available, it will be repaired.

TOWNHOME SERVICE AREA COMMITTEE BY MELISSA PARKER MParker@BalwinParkPOA.com The following information is a glimpse of the business that the Townhome Service Area Committee addressed in the Sept. 16, 2021 meeting. A complete copy of the official minutes can be obtained on the Community Network, BaldwinParkNetwork.com. n The TSAC moved to approve the amount of the fire system communicator for $995 (plus tax) per building, as submitted with the notation that priority replacement will be given to communicators connected to AT&T service. n The TSAC moved to accept the 2022 Reserve Study. n The TSAC moved to approve the AIA contract for A/R/C Associates Incorporated. n The TSAC moved to deny the proposal for irrigation upgrades in the Live/Work Service Area.

UPDATES

n Please remember to report any landscape, building or irrigation issues on the Baldwin Park Services App. Reporting items on the Baldwin Park Services App will allow residents to share photos of the reported area(s) and receive real time updates from management staff on corrective measures being taken. n New sod that was installed in August has been treated with a fungicide. n BrightView has treated Hollies in the City Homes No. 1 service area for scale.

n BrightView has treated Lilies on Twinview Lane and Fern Avenue (Issa 28, Issa 22) for rust. n During the month of August, there was 6.14 inches of rain (normal is 7.69). n The new approved rain sensors have been installed by irrigation techs. Water conservation is an issue at this time, so we are currently trying to minimize water usage as much as possible. n When BrightView lays new sod and installs plant material, irrigation is broken or requires repair. Irrigation repairs/adjustments are in the proposal(s) when reviewed/ signed. If plant material or sod does not take or dies, these items are replaced on behalf of BrightView. Plant/sod installations crews work first, then irrigation technicians work to make repairs after all material has been installed. n Per DRS Inc., here is the townhome painting schedule for October 2021: Live/work service area. n Per DRS Inc., here is the townhome maintenance schedule for October 2021: Issa 28. Because of the pandemic, there has been an adjustment to originally stated dates for painting projects and maintenance in the townhome service areas. Supplies were delayed in being shipped from vendors to DRS Inc. at the beginning of the year. Schedules now will be projected one to two months out to anticipate any possible future changes. Notices still are being left on townhome front doors one to two weeks in advance to inform residents of any upcoming projects beginning in their address range.

HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR TOWNHOUSE OWNERS Have you thought about touching up the exterior paint of your home? There are many different paint colors for the townhome buildings. The association touches up buildings during the preventative maintenance once a year. In addition, if you have a need to re-paint your door, touch up the trim or re-stain the entry steps, the trim paint, door paint and concrete deck stain can all be found at the Winter Park, Sherwin Williams store located at 1770 FL-436, Winter Park, FL 32792, (407) 677-0741. When a building has been completely repainted, the body of the building is painted with a product called AllGuard by Dow Corning. This is a silicone elastomeric coating system that has a 10-year warranty. As the homeowner, you have some important responsibilities. Failure to do so may void your warranty. Please note the following requirements: n Any action to pick, poke, tear or penetrate the painted surface will break the protective seal and may void the warranty. n Any pressure cleaning must be performed with pressure less than 1500 psi. n The only cleaning product specified for use is SIMPLE GREEN. Most cleaning should be performed with only water and sponges. n Do not use harsh brushes or scraping tools. They will harm the surface. n Any plant material growing on the building voids the warranty on that area of the building. The homeowner then assumes responsibility for these areas. Please note the following information: n Creeping fig roots itself into the building’s stucco about every 3 inches, and it pulls any moisture out of the stucco, which eventually destroys the stucco. If the creeping fig is not maintained properly, it will grow into the soffit and attic, potentially causing leaks in the roofs among other issues. n To touch up the body paint, you must be certified in the application by Dow Corning, or you can void the warranty.

n BrightView has treated Topiaries and Ixora in the City Homes No. 2 service area. BALDWIN PARK LIVING |SEPTEMBER NOVEMBER 2021

WHAT A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD WE LIVE IN!

And now we’re back! W

WILL CAMPBELL PRESIDENT BALDWIN PARK JOINT COMMITTEE

e’ve seen a lot of things over the last 18 months. Some good, some not so good, and some other stuff that really just left us saying, “Huh?” Fast-forward to today, and it’s fantastic to see our neighborhood thriving again. Restaurants are packed on a Tuesday night. Stores are buzzing with pre-holiday purchases (don’t forget, those supply chains aren’t back to normal yet, y’all). As the weather begins to cool, the lake and parks around it are filled with people working out or just enjoying the beauty of Lake Baldwin. It’s great to see things coming back to life! As I write this, we’re knee deep in the planning of multiple October events, including Kidtoberfest for the little ones and the Baldwin Park Spirit Stroll for us adults. It feels so good to be working with people again to bring amazing events back to the neighborhood. Not only are events coming back, but so are the holidays!

PARADE PARTICIPANTS

Although the October events already will have passed by the time you read this, we also have so much to look forward to in November, including one of my favorite days: Thanksgiving! I mean, who doesn’t love a day where you can eat, drink and nap, then do it all again, without judgement. Speaking of eating, check out our special feature on holiday recipes (see pages 16 to 23). One of the big things I am looking forward to over the next month is moving into my new home here in Baldwin Park. We’re lucky to have had a house fall into our laps through a friend of a friend, and although we had to move somewhere else in Baldwin in the interim, we’re very excited to get into the new house before the holidays. To our neighbors who are (hopefully) reading this: We’re excited to meet you in the coming weeks! Looking ahead from here, the trees of New Broad Street will start to show their holiday cheer

with pretty snowflakes dripping from every branch. We are also inviting every resident to be a part of the Light Up Baldwin Park home decorating contest — something we started last year as a way for each of you to show your creativity. Better start planning your themes and décor. Be sure to encourage your neighbors to do the same, because who doesn’t love a little friendly competition? On top of all that, we have a spectacular event coming up at the beginning of December to celebrate the holidays, and it even has a new name: Baldwin Park’s Winter Wonderland Extravaganza! Mark your calendars for Dec. 4 now, because this is going to be one of the best holiday events we’ve ever had with surprises at every turn. Until next time, stay safe, stay well and remember, We Are Baldwin Park!

We currently are looking for community groups, businesses, schools and sponsors to participate in our Winter Wonderland Extravaganza event on Dec. 4. If you, your business or group are interested, contact Adam Bailey, Adam@TimWebberEvents.com.

WILL CAMPBELL Baldwin Park Joint Committee president and regular columnist Will Campbell shares this mouth-watering recipe that can be perfect for any holiday occasion.

first “cold” front of the season in mid-October, it seemed to usher in the 2021 holiday season. Many families have plenty of Thanksgiving traditions — including some recipes that result in dishes that embody the spirit of the holiday. This year, we asked Baldwin Park residents to share their favorite Turkey Day dishes and welcome you to add a few of these to your menu this year. — ANNABELLE SIKES

MAPLE BACON CRACK INGREDIENTS n 8 slices bacon n 1 tube crescent rolls n 1/4 cup pure maple syrup n 3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed n 1/3 cup chopped pecan pieces

METHOD n Cook bacon until soft, not crunchy, drain, chop then set aside. n Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray. Roll out crescent roll dough onto parchment paper and

pinch the seams to make a single sheet. Prick crescent roll dough all over with a fork. Spread half the maple syrup on top of the dough using a pastry brush. Evenly spread 3/4 cup brown sugar on top. Top with chopped bacon and chopped pecan pieces. Drizzle with maple syrup again. n Bake in the oven 22 to 25 minutes. When done, allow to cool then cut into pieces and serve. Drool worthy!

THE TURKEY CORY PAINTER Baldwin Park resident Cory Painter says growing up, he knew one thing about making a turkey — no one in his family was an expert. “It seemed like each year someone else was volunteered as tribute to have their turkey unfairly critiqued,” Painter says. “When I started college, a group of friends and I were unable to travel home for Thanksgiving because of our work schedules. As fate would decide, I was volunteered to cook the turkey.” Painter says naturally, he panicked. However, he decided to keep it simple and bought an oven bag to put the turkey in while it cooked. Here’s as simple as it gets, folks.

NO MESS, EASY, OVEN BAG BAKED TURKEY n INGREDIENTS n Whole turkey n Butter n Salt and pepper n Onion n Carrot n Celery n Stove Top stuffing n Oven bag n Flour METHOD n Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not exceed 400 degrees. n Add one tablespoon of flour to the oven bag and shake (this will keep the bag from bursting). Put the bag in a pan, at least two inches deep. n Spread butter all over the outside of the turkey and season with salt and pepper. Stuff the turkey with onion

quarters, carrot sticks, celery, and my wife insists on Stove Top stuffing (even though I make homemade stuffing, but happy wife, happy life!). n Place the bird in the bag and close it with a tie. n Cut six half-inch slits on the top of the bag to let the steam escape. Tuck ends of bag into the pan. n Cook according to specified recipe. The bag will do all the work and lock in the flavor while basting the ingredients.

THE SIDES GABRIEL GONZALEZ, aka Chef Smokey, Provisions and Buzz Co. Longtime Baldwin Park resident Gabriel Gonzalez loves the areas family centered community and the friendly neighbors. “For me, the recipe for figs is special for the reason that my mother made them on Christmas Day; it remains to be said that I am a native Mexican,” Gonzalez says. “What I like the most about Thanksgiving is living with the people you appreciate the most, although sometimes you can’t be with your parents, but everyone is in your heart.”

SMOKEY STUFFED FIGS INGREDIENTS n 12 figs n 100 grams goat cheese n 100 grams almond n 1 ounce liquid smoke n 2 sweet potatoes n 6 ounces walnuts

ALYSHA LEVIN Alysha Levin has lived in Baldwin Park for a year and loves its sense of community. Levin’s favorite part about Thanksgiving is coming together with family. “It’s one time where we have a really nice dinner together at the table with no distractions,” Levin says. “It’s always hectic, but I wouldn’t change it.” She says her aunt would make an amazing sweet potato casserole every year that has won over everyone including those who aren’t sweet potato fans — including her dad. With this recipe, he even goes for seconds.

18

METHOD n Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. n Clean the figs and remove the stalk. Cut at the top, at the point where the fig begins to enlarge, and empty the fig very delicately. Reserve its pulp in a container. n Mash the goat cheese with a fork, until it is soft.

n Roast the almonds with liquid smoke. n Put the sweet potatoes on boiling for 15 minutes. Peel and cut potatoes into slices n Mix the reserved fig pulp with the cheese and fill the fig, very delicately, with this mixture. n Put on the sweet potato slice. Add crushed walnuts on top.

ULTIMATE SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE INGREDIENTS n Fresh sweet potatoes n Brown sugar n Pecans n Egg n Unsalted butter and milk n Vanilla extract n Cinnamon and nutmeg n Salt n All-purpose flour METHOD n Cook the potatoes. I prefer to peel and cube the sweet potatoes prior to boiling. This cuts down on the cooking time. Once cooked, mash them using a potato masher or hand mixer. Set aside. n Toast the pecans. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Measure two cups of pecans, lay them on a baking sheet and

BALDWIN PARK LIVING | NOVEMBER 2021

toast in the oven for a few minutes. Check on them often to not burn them. Toasting the pecans is optional, but it will add more flavor to the dish. n Prepare other ingredients. While the potatoes are cooking, gather the ingredients for the casserole. In a large bowl, add flour brown sugar, and cinna-

mon. Then, add butter to it, and mix the ingredients together. Set aside. n Make the sweet potato mixture. In a separate bowl, add the mashed potatoes, roasted pecans, brown sugar, two large eggs, melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Pour some milk on top and mix till the texture is consistent. n Assembly. Combine all the ingredients and layer them into the prepared casserole dish. n Bake. Lastly, bake for 20 to 30 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven and cover with foil to keep it warm. Spray the foil first with baking spray to avoid marshmallows sticking to it.

MYRIAM GARCIA Since Myriam Garcia first moved to the United States from Colombia in 2000, she has prepared Thanksgiving dinners that incorporate dishes from her beloved country. That way, she can share a little bit of Colombia with her loved ones. She says she loves this side dish, because it’s easy and the kids ask for it every year. “Our two kids have made many, many lifelong friends,” Garcia says. “No wonder so many people never want to leave Baldwin Park. It’s the friendships and community that keep people here.”

SAFFRON MASHED YUCA INGREDIENTS n 1 pound frounceen yuca or cassava n 1/2 teaspoon saffron threads n 1 cup milk n 1 cup heavy cream n 1 clove garlic crushed n 1 tablespoon butter n 1/4 cup grated parmesan n Salt and pepper METHOD n Place the yuca in a medium pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, reduce the heat and simmer, covered for 15 to 20 minutes, or until fork tender. n Heat the milk, cream, garlic and saffron in a medium sauce pan over medium heat until simmering. Remove from heat and set aside. n Drain the yuca and remove any fiber from the center. Mash and add the milk saffron mixture, salt, pepper and parmesan cheese. Stir to combine and serve.

FAVORITE DINNER ROLLS

MIRANDA CADY Miranda Cady has lived in Baldwin Park for a year and says she absolutely loves it. As a luxury real-estate agent, Cady sees many neighborhoods and houses, but she says nothing compares to the community in Baldwin. Cady’s favorite part of Thanksgiving is making memories and being together with family. “There’s nothing more important in life than a solid foundation and great people to share your time with and there’s something about Thanksgiving tradition that just brings people together in the best way,” Cady says. “Having great food, sharing it with even better people and having gratitude.”

INGREDIENTS n 1 1/2 cups milk n 1 stick unsalted butter, cut into pieces, plus more for brushing n 1/2 cup sugar n 1 package active dry yeast n 1/2 cup warm water n 3 large eggs, lightly beaten n 1 1/2 teaspoons salt n 6 cups all-purpose flour METHOD n Place milk in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Remove from the heat, stir in the butter and sugar and let cool. n Dissolve yeast in warm water and let sit until foamy. Combine milk mixture, eggs, yeast, salt, and 1/2 of the flour

in a mixer with the dough attachment and mix until smooth. n Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, and stir until a smooth ball forms. Remove from the bowl and knead by hand on a floured surface for about 5 minutes. n Place in greased bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 60 to 70 minutes. On a floured surface, punch down the dough and shape into desired shapes. n Place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Cover again and let rise until doubled, about 30 to 40 minutes. Preheat the oven 350 degrees Fahrenheit. n Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter before serving.

n Make white chocolate batter. In microwave-safe bowl, microwave chocolate chips according to package directions until melted; stir until smooth. Cool slightly. or a certain group that meets in Baldwin Park, Frisbee is more than just a sport. It’s a way to bring people of all ages and skillsets together. Tammy Bishop discovered the group while looking up local pickup Frisbee games after moving in 2008 to Florida. In 2009, she showed up for a game and has been part of the group ever since. “I consider it my therapy

— mentally and physically,” she says. The group started at AdventHealth on Mills Avenue, which used to be Florida Hospital, about 15 to 20 years ago. What began as a small crew of hospital employees has since turned into much more. After playing a few small games, the members posted on Meetup and began to grow. Now, as many as 40 people come out to play in the pick-up games. Over the years, Geo Gregory, Continued on page 26

ABOUT FRISBEE FOOTBALL Frisbee football is also a great form of exercise, Bishop says. It stimulates the brain and body, and is a no-contact sport. People can play as little or as much as they want. The players follow the rules of USA Ultimate, which can be found on the organization’s website, and play seven-on-seven games. Players only can progress by throwing or catching. If the Frisbee is dropped on the ground, it is considered a turnover. When the person receiving the Frisbee catches it they can pivot in place to throw the Frisbee, but they cannot move from where their feet are planted. They have 10 seconds to throw the Frisbee.

Tammy Bishop, left, enjoys participating in the weekly Frisbee football games.

Continued from page 24 one of the longtime active players of the pick-up games, has watched friendships, relationships and families grow and flourish. “I have watched some of these kids grow up over the years while being part of this group,” Gregory says. “We have one couple that met here, got married, had kids and now

still comes out to play with their kids.” The players explained they are not part of a club or affiliated with an organization, so anyone can show up — as long as they are prepared to have fun. “Everyone has different cliques, and this is just one of my families,” Gregory says. “I have been playing Frisbee since I was a kid.” Over time, the players have traveled to different fields across Orlando. Baldwin Park has now been the permanent location for quite some time. The group meets at 10 a.m. every Sunday at Blue Jacket Park. Gregory explained over time with people being so active on the field, Baldwin Park asks residents to let the field rest. The players do their part to chip in by bringing grass seed and dirt as needed. “Frisbee football is really a combination of all the sports in one,” Gregory says. “That’s one of the things that makes it so great.” Bishop says the group’s cohesiveness makes it unique to other pickup groups.

yron Lee was searching the Baldwin Park Homeowner’s Association page for groups to join in the area when he noticed something was missing. The page had groups for nearly everything — from sports clubs to art, yoga, moms with strollers, Chinese board games and more. Lee felt like none of the groups was for him. Lee says he had seen Pride flags around the neighborhood, but when he searched for a local group, he came up with nothing. That’s when he got the idea. “I wanted to create something where I could meet up with others that liked and experienced some of the same things that I did,” Lee says. Lee started the LGBTQ+ Facebook group in May, with the help of Baldwin Park couple, Rachel and Cortney Blank. Rachel and Cortney say they had first heard of the group in an emailed newsletter the HOA sent out. When they saw an LGTBQ+ group was being created, they knew they had to get involved. “When I saw ‘LGTBQ+,’ my ears perked up,” Rachel says. “We’ve made a lot of great friends here, but we never met anyone queer in the neighborhood. We were excited for the potential opportunity to meet Continued on page 30

Continued from page 28 like-minded individuals in our home area.” The couple reached out to Lee, met up and connected immediately. Lee, who wasn’t on Facebook at the time, says Rachel and Cortney had the idea to bring the group to social media to get more people involved. Soon, others began to hear of the group and joined. The new members introduced themselves in short posts about their lives with activities and restaurants they enjoyed. Rachel says the members currently meet at local coffee shops or to grab dinner. However, the goal is to grow the group beyond that. “It would be great to meet more people in the group and have barbecues or pool parties or even to go to Pride events together,” she says. Lee says COVID-19 has been a big factor in preventing the progress of the group. The process of booking larger areas such as local pavilions or obtaining reservations for groups of people has become more

difficult because of social distancing and other safety guidelines. Rachel says she hopes the group gives like-minded people a way to connect, interact and support one another. “I don’t necessarily identify as someone who’s like, ‘I’m a lesbian,’ or, ‘Oh, I like rainbows,’” Rachel says. “I’m just a person who happens to be married to a woman, and we have a family that I love very much.” Rachel says she believes there is always a need for people everywhere to find others like them so they can feel connected in their community through friendships or support systems. She feels she, Cortney and their family have found that in Orlando and Baldwin Park. “There have been incidents where someone has made a comment or been rude, but I have never felt threatened or scared when living here,” Rachel says. “This community stood out to us for a number of reasons when we were deciding where to live but I love how diverse and accepting it is here.”

FOR MORE INFORMATION To join the group, visit “Baldwin Park Orlando LGBTQ+” on Facebook, or for more information, email Byron Lee at byron@biobitworks.com.

Lee and Rachel say although the community is generally accepting, they still are cautious in certain situations. “We did have some concerns even just introducing ourselves as the new neighbors where there was some confusion when people thought we were sisters or roommates, and then you have to explain to them, ‘No, this is my wife and my daughter, and we are a family unit,’” Rachel says. Group members say safety is another important reason to have the LGBTQ+ group in the community. If there are ever issues, the group could provide a support system of people to talk to, obtain resources and learn how to gain support from allies. The group welcomes everyone no matter age, location, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or skin color.

BALDWIN PARK ELEMENTARY PTA 2021 SHINDIG

The event featured delicious appetizers, including red and yellow tomato bruschetta, Tuscan white bean spread, and artichoke and pesto hummus.

The highly anticipated Baldwin Park Elementary PTA “Shindig … Fresh Squeezed” brought together parents, staff, teachers and community members to raise money for the school and its students. Held Friday, Oct. 15, at the intersection of Kenan Lane and Meeting Place in Baldwin Park, the event featured an auction, games, a deejay and dance floor, food, drinks, and plenty of fun. A Chef’s Tasting Dinner for Four at The Osprey, a Corkcickle package, a private flight and aviation tour by Shelter Family Aviation, and a Golf Twosome at the Ritz Carlton were only a handful of the many auction items available for bidding. Stephanie Harley, the Baldwin Park Elementary PTA vice president of communications, says the annual event traditionally raises about $50,000 for the school, which enables the PTA to enhance student programs and resources. This year is the first year the event was held outside. “Due to COVID, we wanted to make the event as fun — but

36

Teachers from the school came out to support their students at the PTA event.

also as safe as we possibly could,” Harley says. “It has been so nice seeing the community come out and support one of its local schools, especially since some of us neighbors haven’t seen each other since the pandemic began.” Baldwin Park Elementary PTA President Jessica Barrows says although hosting the event outside was a lot more work, it was all worth it. “I am so incredibly proud and honored to have this special group of people and a school and a community that support us,” Barrows says. “It was truly a team effort and a night none of us will ever forget.”
