CHEESY Culver’s, a Wisconsin-based fast-food restaurant chain, opened its Winter Garden location earlier this month. STAFF WRITER
A little taste of Wisconsin has officially arrived in Winter Garden. Having opened Monday, Nov. 7, Culver’s is a fast-casual restaurant that originated in Sauk City, Wisconsin, in 1984 with the Culver family. George Culver was the son of a cheesemaker and grandson of a Wisconsin farmer. Culver’s was born when he combined a love for his mother’s homemade hamburgers and his favorite childhood vacation treat, fresh frozen custard. From there, the restaurant’s signature ButterBurgers and Fresh Frozen Custard became staples for customers. Today, the company boasts 560 family-owned and -operated franchises across 22 states. Before the Winter Garden store opened, the Clermont location was the first in the area and a popular spot for those who grew up in the Midwest. Winter Garden resident Alissa Beier and her family are originally from Wisconsin, so when they found out that Culver’s was beginning to open Florida locations, they were excited — so excited, in fact, that before the Clermont and Winter Garden locations opened they drove to the one in Tampa. “Culver’s is a little piece of home, first and foremost,” Beier said. “Being able to get real Wisconsin cheese curds and real custard is wonderful. We’ve been waiting since they announced they were opening several in the Orlando area, and when we found out one was going to be in Winter Garden, we were ecstatic. We’d been driving over to Tampa prior to the one opening in Clermont, and before ours opened, we’d go out to Clermont several times a month.” Each restaurant employs anywhere between 30 to 75 team members year-round, with about 10 additional summertime seasonal positions.
WINTER GARDEN
Ocoee resident Tim Coleman is the owner of the Winter Garden location, which created between 50 and 60 jobs. Because the company’s small-town approach and value on food quality and customer service was so appealing to him, Coleman left his career in banking to open his own Culver’s. Since the Winter Garden location opened, Beier has been there four times. To her and her family, it is the same Culver’s they remember it to be — complete with the infamous ButterBurgers and custard. ButterBurgers are made from Midwest beef and served on a lightly buttered, toasted bun. The Fresh Frozen Custard is made with cold-pressed vanilla and Dutch blend chocolate and contains less air than most other ice creams, making it creamier. And it’s not just ButterBurgers and custard, either. The menu has expanded over the years to include chicken tenders, grilled chicken sandwiches, salads, butterfly jumbo shrimp, pot roast sandwiches, a variety of soups and more. Culver’s also has added a gluten-free bun to cater to customers who can’t eat gluten but still want to enjoy a ButterBurger. It also has a separate menu of meals that are 500 calories and under. “Before we had one close by, I always felt like I had to get a ButterBurger with cheese, curds and custard just because those are my favorites,” Beier said. “Now, I’m trying everything and I love that they have more than just burgers and chicken. The pot roast sandwich is my current favorite. I’m hoping they will offer the walleye fish dinner seasonally, like the others do. That’s my husband’s favorite.” For Beier, Culver’s is more than just a fast-food joint. It’s the perfect way to bring together her home in Wisconsin and her new home in Winter Garden. “It has a pretty big menu with a friendly atmosphere, and I’m really excited to see them become a part of our great community,” Beier said.

OAKLAND The chapter on animals in the town of Oakland’s Code of Ordinances is so old that it states “it shall be unlawful for any person to hitch, ride or allow any horse, mule, ass or other animal to stand on any sidewalk.” Furthermore, it’s still against the law for anyone to keep a hog or pig pen in the town limits without a special permit. As the town continues to update its ordinances, it is cleaning up verbiage that no longer pertains to the 21st century. It is possible the last time the animal ordinance was rewritten was in 1953; Town Clerk Kim Gay can find no other records to indicate otherwise. Jay Marder, Oakland town planner, has recommended that the commission adopt the Orange County Animal Services ordinance, but Mayor Kathy Stark had reservations. “My only concern (is), we have a history of rural-ness that we embrace,” she said. “We don’t want to move to, ‘You can’t have chickens in your yard, the Territos can’t have their horse in their backyard.’ I miss seeing the turkeys walking down the road.” The commission passed the first reading of the ordinance update, but Stark said she wants to have more discussion at the second reading and public hearing, scheduled for Dec. 13. The first readings of four other ordinance updates were passed, as well. These are changes pertaining to alcoholic beverages (regulates distance between operating business and churches and schools), garage sales (limits number of days), businesses (home-occupation regulations) and taxation (for items such as licenses and lien search fees).

Community remembers Kayleigh
Observer “If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”
GABBY BAQUERO STAFF WRITER
Kayleigh Anne Rawles is remembered fondly for her love of reading, dancing, softball and constant desire to make everyone happy — including her 7-year-old brother, Kameron; her parents, Kristine Silva and Joshua Rawles; and even strangers she passed on the street. “She waved to strangers all the time, and it drove me crazy, because you never know people in the world,” said Kayleigh’s mother, her voice breaking with emotion as she relived the memory. “But she always said, ‘I waved to them and some of them waved back, and they smiled. And for that moment, I might have made someone happy that day.’ And that’s really who she was. She just wanted everyone to feel happy and loved.” Kayleigh, nicknamed Kaykay, died in her home on Sunday, Nov. 13. She was 13. Kayleigh was an eighth-grader at Ocoee Middle School who played softball for the West Orange Girls Club. She was a girl who loved to dance, starting with lessons in ballet, tap, jazz and Scottish highland at just 2 years old. Her memorial, held Nov. 19 at Bill Breeze Park, was filled with emotional hugs between family and friends donning tearstreaked smiles who gazed upon numerous pictures of moments throughout Kayleigh’s 13 years of life. Multiple remarks were made of how Kayleigh and her mother are spitting images — a fact reinforced by Kayleigh’s skills with the clarinet and her own desire to one day become a nurse like her mom. But Kayleigh’s mom remembers her daughter for her silly moments, unceasing preoccupation with making sure everyone was happy and a caring heart that led to her volunteering to take care of disabled kids at her school. “She had so much love in her heart for everyone, and she carried the weight of the world on her shoulders,” Silva said. “She always made sure all her friends were OK. Even if I was having a hard day, my

13-year-old girl would go, ‘Mom, you want a foot rub?’ No matter what she was doing, she always made sure that everyone was OK.” Silva recalled Kayleigh’s obsession with books and libraries, along with her devastation whenever another local bookstore closed or when her mother would catch her reading when she was supposed to be sleeping. “God, she loved reading,” Silva said. “She read so many books. I would find her at two or three o’clock in the morning after I’d put her to bed at 9:30, and I’d go,
‘What are you still doing up? You need to go to bed.’ I’d have to take the book out of the room to make her stop, and she would say, ‘Just one more chapter.’” Kayleigh’s love of stories began at an early age, when her older cousin, Caitlin Chicoine, read her Dr. Seuss books before bedtime. Since then, the “sweet and considerate” Kayleigh, as Chicoine described, kept up with all the latest releases in the youngadult genre, including the Hunger Games trilogy — one of Kayleigh’s favorites.
However, Kayleigh spent just as much time playing her favorite video game: The Legend of Zelda, as she did with her treasured books. Photos displayed in a poster at her memorial included a child’s drawing of the Zelda character. Presley Anderson, one of Kayleigh’s best friends since kindergarten, also recounted Kayleigh spending much time in her bedroom playing Zelda and listening to music, particularly Pierce The Veil — Kayleigh’s favorite band. She described Kayleigh as a sarcastic, funny friend who excelled at brushing off typical middle-school drama and being the voice of reason whenever they spoke of their problems on their walks home from school every week. She laughed as she remembered the many times they had sleepovers and her friend would dance around while she would sing. “I’m upset, of course,” Anderson said of Kayleigh’s passing. “But I know she’s in a better place now; I know she’s happy.” Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com.

dents not only in Winter Garden but also in West Orange County,” said Cynthia Cardona, executive director at the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation. Wilder’s story began when she first moved to Winter Garden in 1976 and became immersed in the community of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where her husband, Frank, was a pastor. With Bible verses always dancing on the tip of her tongue or a hymn ready to be sung, Wilder became known for her faith and love. But love isn’t love until you show it, Wilder said. Her love of Winter Garden became evident as she served the people of the community from the first day she arrived.
“She’s a godly person, a nice person,” said Winter Garden Mayor John Rees. “We’ve been blessed to have her here in our community.” Wilder’s list of accomplishments are many. She was chair of the Code of Enforcement Board, served with the Community Redevelopment Agency and served with the city’s Recreation Board, and when the District 3 City Commissioner seat became vacant in 2006, Wilder stepped in to fill the role. Her reasoning, she told city leaders back then, was to serve the people. But her service of Winter Garden didn’t end there. She helped open the Neighborhood Center for Families at the Mildred Dixon Activity Center. In 2008, she created the community garden on Ninth Street. She also
has spent 54 years as a Sunday school teacher. And Wilder did all of this while furthering her own education. She received her associate’s degree in business administration in 1997 followed by her bachelor’s degree in 2010 at age 77. Even now, she’s considering going for a master’s degree. “If I’m here long enough, I’ll get my doctorate,” Wilder said. Her energy and involvement is something many of her friends have become familiar with over the years. “She’s always been one who can’t sit still; she’s never in one place,” said Annie King Morris, a close friend of Wilder. “And she’s still rippin’ and runnin’ around.” But for all her running around, there is only one accomplishment that Wilder is most proud
WEST ORANGE TIMES
of — helping her special-needs granddaughter, LaKaye Danielle Drummer. “I’ve worked with her, prayed for her,” Wilder said. “When I leave here, she will be self-sufficient.” When Wilder received word about the Heritage Builder award three weeks ago, she said she could hardly believe the heritage foundation had selected her. “I wondered if I deserved it,” she said. But everyone at her award ceremony last week said there was no one more deserving in the community than Wilder. “We could not have chosen a better person to honor,” said Morris. “She is such a humble person.” Contact Brittany Gaines at bgaines@orangeobserver.com.

The neighbor stated she saw a black woman bang on the doors to a nearby residence, but no one answered. The neighbor then witnessed the woman return to a vehicle. Two men then exited the vehicle, kicked down the doors and were seen leaving with a brown briefcase and other items. Upon arrival to the scene, responding officers did not find anything out of the ordinary besides the doors, which had broken lock mechanisms. An officer then stopped a vehicle matching the neighbor’s description three miles away. A young child was present in the car at the time. The neighbor positively identified two of the four suspects. The homeowner also arrived and identified the items in the car as being his. All four suspects were arrested, and the child was placed in the care of a family member.

NOV. 11 16130 block of West Colonial Drive. At 10:54 a.m., two lawenforcement officers stopped a black sedan speeding at 64 mph. When one of the officers approached the vehicle, he noticed the smell of cannabis and asked the passenger to step out of the car. The passenger obliged, nearly falling over because he was a disabled adult who needed the assistance of a walker. Eventually, the shaking and “distraught” passenger pointed to his pocket, trying to show the officer the half-shoved bag of cannabis in it. When asked if it was his, the passenger shook his head repeatedly. It was determined the driver had attempted to hide the cannabis on the passenger, a ward of the state who has cerebral palsy. The passenger was under the care of the driver, an employee of a home-care agency.

West Orange Healthcare District awarded $700,000 in grants to four organizations to improve local health care. BRITTANY GAINES STAFF WRITER
Every night before bed, Corina Rase would lock both locks on her bedroom door. She hated doing it but had no choice. She was vulnerable when she slept, she said, and there was no telling when her son, Richard, might have one of his fits. Diagnosed with autism, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, Richard often resorted to hitting others when he became agitated or angry. “I felt like a prisoner in my own home because of his behavior problems,” Rase said. The Rases’ case is just one of the reasons why the West Orange Healthcare District works to extend a helping hand to the local health care community to make West Orange a healthier place to live. This fall, the district awarded a total of more than $700,000 in grants to four local nonprofit organizations — Attain Inc., Quest Inc., Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and the Orlando Health Foundation. For people such as Rase and Richard, these grants can make all the difference. Before finding Attain Inc., life for Rase revolved around keeping Richard calm. She would

sneak out of the house after Richard went to bed at night to run errands, because bringing Richard often meant dealing with his behavior in the middle of the store. “I was just trying to keep him stable,” Rase said. “I worked around him. I didn’t have any social life. It was just working with him to keep him safe and myself safe.” Then in 2006, Richard was accepted into a group home run by Attain. It changed everything. “They know how to deal with him,” Rase said. “He’s getting the help and support he needs. I’ve seen a lot of progress made in his bad behaviors.” Every Friday, Rase picks up Richard for their weekly motherson date. They go to the movies. They go to Target or Best Buy to pick out a new CD for Richard. And he almost never has a fit. But without Attain’s help 10 years ago, Rase doesn’t know how she ever would have managed. “Attain has been, for me, a lifesaver,” she said. “He’s in a safe home environment. I can see him, and I don’t have to travel far. I’m very thankful.” But within the West Orange community, there’s a shortage of housing for people with developmental disabilities, said Dr. Craig Cook, executive director with Attain Inc.

It’s not going to be part of their day-to-day.” In addition to providing healthy foods at their pantries, the nonprofit will also use the grant funds to implement health screenings for anyone who comes to their food pantries. “It’s all about closing the gap on hunger,” Higgerson said. “It takes a lot of people working together.” Quest Inc. received a grant of about $113,000, which will be used to provide services and therapies to developmentally delayed children. The Orlando Health Foundation will use its $77,000 grant to further its mission of empowering community leaders to take charge of their health and the health of their community.

“It’s meant to be a home environment that has some supports within it for vulnerable individuals,” he said about their housing program. “A lot of families who have loved ones with special needs are struggling right now because the lack of housing.” To fill in this need, the $250,000 grant Attain Inc. received from the district will be used to build more housing for special-needs individuals. With two special-needs children — Mark and Kaitlin, both diagnosed with autism and microcephaly — Helen Hardzewicz can vouch for the value of the nonprofit’s housing program. “They have helped them continue to lead the most independent life,” she said. Hardzewicz also said Attain’s programs allow parents peace of mind about the future of their special-needs children. “They help them adapt to society and retrain their behaviors,” she said. “The services are vital to families that don’t have the knowledge or ability to help them in the home. The programs are wonderful for them to not only have a life of their own, but for their caregivers to know that when they pass from this world, their children have a life and friends and are as safe as they can hope to be.”

“Not only will it benefit folks living (at the assisted-living facility), but also (it) benefits students by performing in front of a live audience. They had a great time. We said we had such a great time that we should do it again.” — Disco San Andreas, owner of the American Actors Factory
“Sally” Riggs had never acted a day in her life. Now, she’s written five skits
and performed in two shows at assisted-living facilities. “It started out with just fooling around,” Riggs said about her newly discovered talents in playwriting. “As soon as I get on the computer, it doesn’t take very long.”

Riggs discovered acting after joining the American Actors Factory, a performing arts group in Ocoee. And after only a few months of classes, she suggested taking the show on the road. As a retired nurse, she knew assistedliving facilities would welcome the quirky bunch of actors. And they did. On June 11, the group performed Riggs’ skit “Super Coco Mart LLC” at the Ocoee Health Care Center. The comedy was about a supermarket that provided every product and service imaginable. “They never have a chance to see a live show,” Riggs said of the residents at the Ocoee Health Care Center. “We had fun, and the ones who were more alert and the staff enjoyed it.” As a new actor, Riggs said she was all nerves during this first performance for a live audience. “I just concentrated on the scene and ignored the crowd,” she said. “I made sure I completed the scene because I had never performed before.” The skit was a three-man show performed by Riggs, Alex Uzonyi and Tyler Reefer, all three of who are students at the American Actors Factory. “Not only will it benefit folks living (at the assisted-living facility), but also (it) benefits students by performing in front
of a live audience,” said Disco San Andreas, owner of the American Actors Factory. “They had a great time. We said we had such a great time that we should do it again.” On Oct. 22, the trio took their skits — this time a “Phantom of the Opera” comedy — to the Brookdale Senior Living Facility in Ocoee. “The show gave us a platform to practice on,” said Reefer, who had been with the factory for more than two years. “I’m not as nervous when I’m on stage in front of people. I’m trying to give something to them.” The American Actors Factory, formerly known as the LA Acting Workshop, was passed on to San Andreas’ leadership nearly two years ago when the previous owner retired. “I liked the teaching part, but I didn’t know if I liked the business part,” San Andreas said. “But it was an opportunity I didn’t expect to happen, so I said, ‘Sure, I’ll take it.’” He renamed it as the American Actors Factory and teaches teenagers and adults the fundamentals of acting. It was during this transition that his students began writing their own plays. “One of my students asked if we could perform something he wrote,” San Andreas said. “Then Sally saw what he was doing. She said she had written something and asked if we could do the show

at an assisted-living facility.” And it’s Riggs’ witty writing combined with zany ideas from Uzonyi that has produced this new stream of hilarious skits, San Andreas said. “There’s no pressure,” San Andreas said about why the skits have been so successful so far. “It’s a just a sheer joy (for them) to perform for other people.” But Riggs said that much of their success comes from San Andreas’ guidance. “Disco was very good at directing it,” she said. “It just got better and better.” Now, requests for more skits are starting to come in from assistedliving facilities. “This all happened very organically,” San Andreas said. “These students were novices when they started. They went from knowing nothing ... to going on auditions and performing.” Contact Brittany Gaines at bgaines@orangeobserver.com.

You usually can spot people roller skating, biking or jogging down the West Orange Trail along Plant Street, but land paddling is a less-common activity — and a slightly peculiar one if you’ve never seen it before. Land paddling, the activity of longboarding with a long stick used to push off the ground, is undoubtedly different, but that’s what Mark Houghton and Adam Rubman love about it. Houghton and Rubman are the two friends behind the uptick of the new sport in Winter Garden. The two lifelong entrepreneurs from Ocoee and Clermont opened their third business six months ago with Orlando Longboards LLC. They chose Winter Garden as their spot to host land-paddling group sessions as a way to market both their new business and personal brand: Flipping Board Co. “When you just go out and skateboard, you’re just skateboarding,” Rubman said, explaining what makes land paddling unique. “You’re doing tricks or you’re riding up on things. You don’t necessarily feel any accomplishment, unless you’re a profes-

sional trying to learn more tricks. With this, it’s made for any age. Young and old (people) who are just wanting to get out there and meet people and just stay fit by just doing something different.” Their personal product line, Flipping Board Co., features longboards, adjustable paddle sticks and clothing products of their own creation designed by local Winter Garden artist Gillian Hatcher. The longboards with Hatcher’s designs launched in mid-November on their website alongside 10 different skateboard brands. They currently do not have a storefront, but they hope to get a brick-and-mortar store in Winter Garden soon. Until then, they rely mostly on social media, group land-
paddling sessions on the West Orange Trail and word of mouth to increase their visibility — a tactic that has served them well so far. They recently caught the interest of a 55-yearold man who joins their sessions all the time, using the stick to help him balance. They’ve also received a message from a British couple interested in flying down to land paddle with them. “It used to be just him and (me),” Houghton said. “And then our friends saw it and wanted to do it, and now there’s like 20 of us, and we just go here and there.” The two friends enjoy the social aspect of land paddling the most, as the activity can be done in a group as a workout and turns longboarding into “fun fitness,” rather than just as a method of transportation. Roy Lee Henley had a smile that could lift up your world and a laugh that stays etched in your brain for a lifetime. A gifted helicopter pilot, who got his start flying as a Warrant Officer in Vietnam in 1968, he was every inch an officer and a gentleman, with just enough mischief and wit sprinkled in to keep us all in trouble and happy about it. He was a Dad, a husband, a business owner (Universal Air) and an epic best friend who deeply loved life and all the people in it. A guy who could fix anything, right after he broke it, a master of the butter beans, a primper of hair, a payer of bar tabs, an over-tipper of waiters, a celebrator of Memorial Days, late night singer of doo-wop, champion of the honey do’s, buster of balls (particularly his friend Timmy’s), burner of

Legacy boys soccer topped CFCA 8-0 Nov. 18. Isaac Titus had three goals for the Eagles (4-1), to pair with a pair of goals from Caleb Enright.
STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR LAKELAND Brad Lord started by
stating the obvious. Following a 35-28 overtime loss to arch-rival Victory Christian in the FHSAA Class 2A, Region 2 Championship, the head coach for Foundation Academy leveled with the dejected, tearful group of athletes huddled around him. “I know it’s stinging now — there ain’t no words I can say to comfort you right now,” Lord said. He went on, though, and tried. Lord reminded his players that they had shattered the program’s record books and that there aren’t many football teams in Central Florida that can boast of consecutive appearances in a regional championship. The thing is, though, this year — as was the case last year — the Lions had their season ended at the hands of the one team they just can’t seem to beat. Even including a historic win against the Storm in 2015 that secured Foundation’s first district championship, the Lions have lost to their foes from Lakeland in five of the teams’ past six meetings. Still, Lord continued to remind

Beyond the rivalry, though, is a mutual respect and friendship between the two programs’ head coaches: West Orange’s Jesse Marlo and Apopka’s Eric Lassiter. B.J. Bohler B.J. Bohler, a senior defensive back for the Ocoee Knights football team (7-4), played just one season for the Knights — and he made it memorable. In his final two games — Nov. 4 against West Orange and Nov. 11 against Bartram Trail — Bohler had a blocked field goal, a pick-six interception, a kickoff return for a touchdown and a rushing touchdown on offense.
Of your four big plays from the final two games, which is the most memorable? Definitely the pick-six (interception returned for a touchdown). Playing defensive back, you don’t get those opportunities as much. So, when I got the ball, I had to score.
THE BASICS SCHOOL: Ocoee High YEAR: Senior AGE: 17 POSITION: Defensive back HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5-foot-8, 175 pounds COLLEGE COMMITMENT: Mercer University
The team utilized you and other defenders on offense, too. What was that like? It made me feel like I was back in little league (football) — I used to play every position back in little league. It just brings back memories. I like to have the ball in my hands and show what I can do. What kind of career are you hoping to pursue? I’m not too sure, but I kind of want to follow in my dad’s footsteps. He’s a construction engineer. I’ve always been good in math and science. But also, my mom wants me to be a pharmacist, so I’ll be looking into that as well. Which are you looking forward to more — Thanksgiving or Christmas? Thanksgiving — who doesn’t like to eat? Which dish are you looking forward to the most? My grandma’s collard greens. — STEVEN RYZEWSKI

his boys that they should have their heads held high after an unbelievably entertaining game of football — and then, about 30 yards away in a far more exuberant huddle, the Storm broke out into a victory cheer, and the quiet in the Foundation huddle was deafening. “I’m feeling it, too, boys,” Lord said, breaking the silence. “I love you guys.” Sometimes, sports suck. Sometimes, the perfect storyline isn’t so perfect. This felt like Foundation’s year to break out. Lord and his staff have put together a growing program with a strong senior class featuring several players readying to play football in college. Even after a regular season loss to Victory earlier this fall, everything about the Lions’ trajectory — the team’s suffocating defense and improving offense — seemed poised to put them over the top. And through the game’s first two quarters, that seemed to be exactly what was happening. Jaquane Patterson started the game by running back the opening kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown. Later in the first quarter, Corey Rahman scored on a short rush. Rahman tasted the end zone again early in the second quarter on a pick-six interception, and suddenly Foundation Academy was leading its rival 21-0. But, as is want to happen,
the tide turned. A touchdown pass for the Storm before the half made it 21-7. Another touchdown in the third quarter made it 21-14. As a sense of dread crept in, a glimmer of hope came in the form of a remarkable 41-yard touchdown run by Patterson. In actuality, he broke four tackles en route to the end zone — but as it happened he seemed to shake off the entire Victory defensive unit. Even that 28-14 lead would not hold, though. Two more Storm touchdowns combined with a steady stream of yellow flags strewn about field — including a controversial illegal formation called on the Lions on a punt that was muffed by Victory and recovered by Foundation late in the fourth quarter — resulted in overtime. In overtime, the Storm scored. The Lions did not. Foundation Academy had lost, but it felt like they were not supposed to. Surely, this was their turn to beat their rival? Surely, they had earned it — they deserved it? Alas, sometimes sports suck — but, that’s why we love them. We love sports because something so utterly unimportant can become so very, very important. Sports have the power to bring dozens of parents, teachers and members

of Foundation’s campus community an hour down Interstate 4, where they cheered and cried along with their boys. We love sports because even though players on this Lions team will probably never forget the “what ifs” of Friday’s fateful game in Lakeland, that is only possible because of this simple fact — Foundation Academy was a very good football team this year. And although nothing Brad Lord said or could have said Friday night was going to make things immediately better for his football team, that doesn’t mean he didn’t say something incredibly true, anyway. “God has got your back. God is going to heal ya,” Lord said. “Tomorrow, you’re going to wake up, and it’s going to be a new day. You did Orange County proud.” Don’t ever let anyone tell you there isn’t some beauty in defeat. No one on that field should ever forget they were a part of that game — even in defeat, it was sports at its best.

Local Special Olympics bowling team wraps successful season Orlando. Tyler and Thomas Venkersammy are to compete as a doubles team and Taylor Simpson, Eileen Jefferson and Paris Yorke will compete as individuals. The team is coached by Tammy and Bill Simpson. The Simpsons and the Renegades extend their thanks to Jay Hess, the owner of Winter Garden Bowl, for his support of Special Olympics. — STEVEN RYZEWSKI
The West Orange Renegades celebrated a successful season Nov. 17 at Winter Garden Bowl.
Power Baseball boasts strong network el-ball coaches for the Orlando Scorpions organization, the two rivals during the varsity season have partnered with Turn2 Sports & Performance’s Brian Dempsey and Bishop Moore Catholic High head coach Tony Mehlich to start their own travel organization: Power Baseball. “You gain a respect playing one another in the same district and having the battles that we’ve had the last six years,” Lassiter said. “So we got to know each other that way, and you kind of expand on it doing the travel ball stuff (as colleagues with the Scorpions). … This was brought up, and we have a mutual respect for each other and how we run our programs, so it seemed like a no-brainer to us.” Thanks to their time with the Scorpions and experience coaching highly recruited players

through their varsity programs, Marlo said the timing was finally right to give their own program a shot. “We’ve just been in this a long time — I feel like we’ve kind of always had the resources to do it but haven’t had the time,” Marlo said. “It just so happened that everything came together at the right time for us. We felt it was our time to kind of branch out.” Just what are those resources, exactly? “Connections,” Marlo said. “That’s the main thing, No. 1 at the top of the list — having the college connections.” And the proof is in the pudding: Power Baseball’s first showcase this fall had more than 25 college programs represented. In addition to the connections the four main partners and their
additional coaches bring, Power also has an early advantage in having a home training facility in Turn2. Located in Oakland, the indoor facility gives the travel program a home base. “If you look around at the travel-ball organizations around the country that are the most successful, they have a home,” said Dempsey, who played his own varsity ball at East Ridge High before playing for USC-Upstate in college. “You’ve got to have a place to train.” Joining the four partners are a who’s who of varsity coaches on the west side of Orange County. Dr. Phillips High’s Mike Bradley, The First Academy’s Scott Grove and East Ridge High’s Joey Wright are among the coaches who will be part of Power this summer, with more assistants, as well.

“It’s a really good starting point, the huge amount of talent that is just on the west side (of Orange County),” Lassiter said. “It obviously helps us a lot when we get the guys that we feel are the better coaches in the area to come and join Power Baseball.” Tryouts for Power Baseball’s season in the summer of 2017 are scheduled for Jan. 6 to 8, 2017, at the Seminole Sports Complex in Sanford. Already, many of the players coached by the head coaches involved have expressed an interest in switching their travel affiliation to the program. “I just think it makes the process easier for everybody if they’re with their (high school) head coach — that was one of the reasons it made it attractive for us to try and go out there and get a lot of head coaches,” Marlo
said. “There’s no secret that highschool coaches and travel ball don’t see eye-to-eye.” In addition to the pursuit of scholarship offers for their players, the coaches at Power intend to be highly competitive on a national scale. “The reason that we’ve all been successful (as coaches) is we like to win,” Lassiter said. “We want to win in everything. We’re kind of geared that way — we’re geared to win.” Of course, when asked which team would be better during varsity season this spring — West Orange or Apopka — both men declined comment. After all, they’re still rivals for those few months each year. Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.
