Diana Bonilla, of Winter Garden, holds her 21-month-old daughter, Madison, during the Nov. 18 adoption ceremony at the Orange County Courthouse.

Time proved otherwise. The new mother said she has vowed to keep in contact with Madison’s biological mother so her daughter will grow up knowing that her birth mother cared for her and gave her up because it was in her best interest. A few months into the fostering process, Bonilla was sending the birth mother photographs of the baby and the three of them were enjoying visits together. “That made her feel really good,” Bonilla said of the relationship with Madison’s biological mother. “She sleeps good at night knowing she’s with me. We established a good relationship because of that.” Seven months after Bonilla took in Madison, the little girl was reunified with her birth mother, she said. She knew it could happen — because, ultimately, the point of foster care is for the parents to get their life together and get their child back, she said — but she was devastated all the same. She had grown to love that little girl. One week later, she learned Madison was back in foster care and that her birth father and mother had terminated their parental rights. “She just couldn’t get her life together,” Bonilla said. “She’s such a selfless person.” The two mothers communicate

very day, and the trio went to dinner last week. On Thanksgiving, Bonilla received a text from the birth mother that exemplified the meaning of the day: “I only want what’s best for her, and you are it.” “She’ll grow up knowing her mother wanted her to have a better life,” Bonilla said of her daughter. Although Madison was with Bonilla for Thanksgiving 2015, this was their first official family holiday. She adopted her daughter on a Friday, and the two left for a vacation the next day, spending nine days together at the beach. “She’s the sweetest, funniest; she puts a smile on everybody’s face,” she said. “She’s such a wonderful little girl.” The new mother is looking forward to Christmas and starting traditions, the most important of which is being with family. There is no more hesitation for Bonilla: Will tomorrow be the day Madison returns to her birth mother? Is this my last day with Madison? “That uncertainty is very real; this is a closed chapter for us,” she said. “Now, this is my daughter. It just solidifies everything we have done during the last year and a half. .... It feels more real.”

Community Based Care of Central Florida, a lead organization overseeing foster care and adoption services locally, aims to raise awareness of the number of children in foster care needing permanent, loving homes. In the tri-county area, about 60 children are available for adoption – among thousands nationally. Since its inception in 2004, CBCCF has helped create more than 2,400 “forever families.”

North Clarke Road. At 12:12 a.m., someone called dispatch to inform the department of a red Toyota swerving on the roadway. The caller followed the car until a responding officer arrived on scene. The officer conducted a traffic stop. The officers immediately noticed the female driver’s breath smelled like alcohol and that her eyes were red and dilated. When the officer asked the female driver for the car registration, she responded by starting the car. The officer asked her to turn off the car, and she did. When he requested her registration a second and third time, she responded the same. The officer then asked the female to step out of the car and noticed vomit on the driver’s side of the floor and bottom part of the door.

hen Diana Bonilla applied to be a foster parent soon after both her parents died, she was told she was setting herself up for more loss. After all, foster children typically come and go in a relatively short time. She applied, anyway, and received so much more than she ever expected. The 43-year-old Winter Garden resident is now a single mother to 21-month-old Madison, the second foster child who was placed in her home. They spent their first Thanksgiving together as a family, and Bonilla is looking forward to Madison’s first Christmas as her daughter. Nearly 20 children in Orange County received forever homes on National Adoption Day, Nov. 18, including Madison. Bonilla adopted the toddler after fostering her beginning in June 2015. The ceremony took place at the Orange County Courthouse and was hosted by Community Based Care of Central Florida. Bonilla, a legal assistant, was worried the possibility of becoming a mother was coming to an end, and she is thrilled to have a chance at motherhood, she said. “I went into foster care thinking, you’ll have a child for a week or two, a month, two months,” she said. “There’s this need. ... I have the time. I have the heart.” She fell in love with the little girl during the fostering process, and the moment Madison became available for adoption, Bonilla knew she wanted her to become a permanent part of the family. She always will remember the day the baby arrived at her door. “She was this bright-eyed, smiley-faced 4-month-old; just the cutest thing ever,” Bonilla said. A few months later, she was dropping Madison off at daycare when she was a little girl running to her mother, saying “Mommy, Mommy!” “I remember thinking, ‘Aw, I will never have that,’” Bonilla said.

Meet Ocoee’s famous felines GABBY BAQUERO STAFF WRITER

He proudly waltzes in on all four paws, making his entrance through the back doorway that leads to his home: A bustling shop with ladies who spend their every day with pretty flowers, arranging them into colorful bouquets for local deliveries. And here he comes with his latest catch — a hard-earned present for the flower ladies in the form of a scaly, writhing black snake. The shouting begins like clockwork. “He’s got a snake! BJ’s got a snake again!” one female florist shouts in terror, quitting her current task and backing away from the feline swiftly advancing further into the floral shop. “Don’t let him in,” shouts a second florist named Lisa Slone, known as the cat nanny.

OCOEE

THE SNAKE WRANGLER

Slone quickly gets up from her desk and makes a sharp turn, running toward the back door to pursue the source of the commotion that Tuesday morning in Betty J’s Florist shop in Ocoee. BJ, the once proud cat, stops dead in his tracks once he sees the cat nanny — the flower lady who always tries to steal his serpentine presents. BJ makes a frantic about-face before making a beeline for the closest exit before the snake thief can catch him. He heads for the white trailer in the green expanse located behind his home where he does all his hunting, the threefoot-long snake still trapped in his mouth. Slone finally catches up to the feline snake wrangler, the only flower lady brave enough to dare pry the snake from his grasp. But this time, she repeatedly commands him to let it go, her tone

increasing each time until the snake managed to escape from death’s grasp and quickly slithers away as BJ is distracted and reprimanded. Such is the life of BJ, a ringtail tabby who spends the majority of his time hunting all sorts of critters for his ungrateful family of flower ladies. He does not quite comprehend why they refuse to accept his gifts, but ever the persistent cat, he tries again, consistently. Sometimes, he brings them lizards; other times, he brings them flying rodents they call “birds,” and sometimes, he shares his beloved snakes. But his family is hard to please, so sometimes he just brings lizards in so he can turn them loose and have friends to play with later. One time, he turned a bird loose in his home, but it did not end well for the bird and his family really did not like that. BJ, named after Betty J, is only one of two quirky felines who reside at the flower shop on Bluford Avenue and McKey Street.

a trick he learned from observing those terrible beasts his flower ladies call “dogs.” “I guess it’s his way of hearing — the senses of the car vibrations, the smells, and what he sees outside the van,” Slone said of Boo. “I’ve been around cats all my life, and I’ve never seen a cat that will hang his head out the window.” Slone has driven him to several places in Ocoee, with the usual being cemeteries, funeral homes and hospitals. He’s even traveled as far as Tampa and has the photos to prove it. Boo now jumps into the white van of his own accord whenever he seeks another adventure. Most days, he goes on two to three rides. He really enjoys being around the flower-obsessed ladies and is almost always around one of them, but his favorite spots are the top cubby on the cat tree in the center of the shop and Slone’s desk — right in the middle of her workspace so she has no choice but to pet his white fur, filled with dried leaves, dirt and all.

THE SPOILED BRAT

Living in a flower shop, as opposed to a traditional home, creates a lifestyle that is a bit out of the norm. The two felines spend their nights alone, curled up in their beds in the front window display. They then wake to whoever opens the shop the next morning. But they have much more freedom and independence than most domestic cats will ever have, and they enjoy it. “They have so much here,” said Rilla Tomyn, the owner of Betty J’s Florists. “Granted, they’ll never curl up on somebody’s head. They’ll never do the things that cats do in somebody’s house, but they live a different life. During the daytime, they have constant companionship if they want it.” The two cats are now loved by Ocoee community members who frequent the shop and their Facebook fans who follow their daily adventures on their dedicated

Boo is his name, and delivering flowers is his game. He mostly just goes along for the rides in the white delivery van, lazily sprawled out on the dashboard as Slone dutifully drives him around town while he naps or looks for birds flying in the sky or perched on electric power lines. He searches for them during the red lights, his different-colored eyes — one blue and one green — attentive to the slightest movement. He can’t hear their chirping or the roar of the motorcycle engine beside the van. The world is completely silent for Boo — an earlier trip to the vet revealed he was born deaf. But he slowly closes his eyes again once the van continues forward, enjoying the humming vibrations of the familiar vehicle. Sometimes, he sticks his head out the window and enjoys the breeze,

page, “The Flower Shop Boys.” However, circumstances could have been drastically different for the two cats, who were both rescues. Six years ago, Lucy, a former delivery driver, found BJ at Marvin C. Zanders Funeral Home in Apopka. Lucy, Tomyn said, was delivering flowers to the funeral home when she came across a feeble kitten in danger of being eaten by two dogs. So Lucy ran over and picked BJ up by the scruff of his neck, effectively plucking him out of a situation he might not have survived. Lucy then took the rescued kitten to the flower shop, and he’s been there ever since. “Everybody went crazy over him, and he just became a part of our shop at that point,” Tomyn said. “Even though the last thing we needed was a cat.” Boo, on the other hand, was in Tomyn’s backyard. She found him a year after losing a white cat. Boo, she said, looked just like her lost cat, so she ran after him and spent four days looking for him in her neighborhood before spotting him in another person’s yard. After asking neighbors if anyone owned him, she was informed his previous owners had left him behind after moving away. So Tomyn decided to keep Boo, as well. The Flower Shop Boys have since been happily wreaking havoc, stealing hearts, delivering flowers, drinking water out of wine glasses, getting stuck in trees on Valentine’s Day and breaking all the rules — and flower vases. “They get to do whatever they want,” Slone said. “If they break a vase, so what? They own the place.” Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com.

Frances Kaufman has spent her lifetime with children. When she lived in England, she was the go-to friend when anyone needed a sitter for a few hours. She loved singing songs and reading books to the children. Later, she spent four days a week as a teacher’s aide when a school was built across the street from her house. Her first tasks were small, such as hanging posters on the walls, but eventually, she became the teacher’s right-hand person, she said. She worked her way up to the position of assessment re-teacher, helping the students who were failing. Now, at age 92, the Winter Garden woman is a reading volunteer, this time at Montessori Winter Garden Charter School, spending several hours each week helping children learn to read. “I’ll tell you one thing — I’m very lucky,” Kaufman said. “When I walk into a classroom, they all run up to me and give me a hug. I’m very lucky that way. It’s wonderful. I love it.” She has volunteered there for four years. This year, she is working with all kindergartners. Cathy Tobin, the school’s assis-

Speeding irks locals

WEST ORANGE TIMES & OBSERVER

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1A

To encourage cars to slow down when traveling in their area, residents, such as Shannon Peavey, have installed multiple street signs reading “children at play.” Unfortunately, the signs have done little to solve the issue. “It’s just constant speeding,” said Peavey, a resident with two grandkids who live across the street from her home. “They’ll come off Story (Road), punch it to go downtown, and vice versa when they leave the four-way intersection down there. I called the city of Winter Garden probably two months ago and complained about the speeding because during one particular week, it was the same person doing it.” WGPD’s call history records show Peavey called on Sept. 13, complaining of speeders and requesting that speed trailers and extra patrols be placed in the area. WGPD complied with her request and installed speed trailers, which were removed before Hurricane Matthew. They also placed patrol officers who have conducted nine total traffic stops on Lakeview Avenue from Sept. 29 to Nov. 8. Nonetheless, several neighbors in the area feel the speeding has worsened since the new parking garage opened in September. “I mean, where are they going to go? There’s no stop sign on this road until you hit Smith Street,” said Winter Garden resident Dennis Duckwiler. “They’re not going to go up Boyd (Street), because they’d have to stop two or three times, so they come right down Lakeview (Avenue). So it’s put all that traffic down our street.” Some residents have resorted to

yelling at the speeding cars while they drive by. “We’ve had major issues,” said Ashley Moore, a mother of three young kids. “It’s gotten to the point where all of us neighbors are screaming and yelling at people to get them to slow down through here.” One such instance a little more than a year ago saw tensions rise when Moore’s brother had a speeding driver pull out a gun on him after he ran up to the car and yelled at him to slow down. But their pleas for help, along with calls for service from what Moore estimates are six other houses on the block, has not achieved much. Moore said some residents with young children have repeatedly begged something be done. They wish speed bumps and additional stop signs be installed as a more permanent solution. WGPD also placed speed trailers in the area around Christmas, Moore said, which she believed unwise, given that people might drive slower to gaze at Christmas lighting decorations. Her husband, John Alliston, added that they also placed one right before Hurricane Matthew hit, but many cars avoided driving during the days following the natural disaster, possibly creating inaccurate data. Alliston himself has offered his own driveway and a free lunch to encourage WGPD officers to park their cars and patrol. Last he heard, he said, is that WGPD wanted to get appropriate data to know when they should place a patrol officer in the area. Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com.

So it seemed a perfect sort of combination with Codeteachers, bringing in their classes and what they do with the Florida Film Academy classes.” The idea behind this partnership is to make instruction more easily accessible. “What we’re teaching kids is that they can learn a great skill, and they can use that skill to change the world for themselves and for others,” Moore said.

WINTER GARDEN Codeteachers and Florida Film Academy have become allies in creative education with their new partnership, which will introduce new courses, workshops and summer camps in filmmaking, code development and game design. Founded in 2012 by Ashley Moore, Codeteachers features an after-school program in 25 Orange County public schools. “Codeteachers is actually a program I created for my own kids,” Moore said. “My daughter was the inspiration. The thought behind it — the mission — is really about empowering kids to believe in themselves and to become creators.” Moore’s collaboration with the management team of Florida Film Academy — Kay Hill, David Haynes and Stefanie Esquijarosa — will introduce new daily classes and camps to the academy and other colleges that teach game design, web design, character design, interactive design, game development, mobile app development and virtual reality. The two creative-education allies also will be partnering with Matthew’s Hope, a homeless outreach community organization based in Winter Garden, to give students the opportunity to create documentaries and design social-media campaigns for Matthew’s Hope. “It just kind of brings more

Former Ocoee resident Stephanie Pineda’s nail salon is purple and white from floor to ceiling. The ceiling tiles are deep purple and spread with glitter; white throne-like chairs accented with sparkly gems await customers; the entire room is bright and fit for pampering. It’s everything Pineda’s daughter, Alizé Castro, could have asked for in what was supposed to become her first business. The salon, called Naillinis and located in the Vista Centre Shoppes plaza just outside Dr. Phillips, was officially opened Oct. 22 by her mother to help carry on her legacy. Alizé, 18, graduated in May from Ocoee High. She was driving home with her boyfriend, Caleb White, early in the morning July 4 when the car was T-boned. Alizé died on impact, and Caleb died in the hospital later that morning. She was always known as Princess Ali, a diva who loved pampering herself and others. She loved makeup and beauty and always had her nails done. She was also interested in business management and had been set to study it,

When Pineda, an accountant, saw her interest in beauty and business, the two made plans to open a nail salon in Connecticut, where they lived until last year when they first moved to Ocoee. “She always wanted to have her own company and wanted to be an eye doctor, but then wasn’t sure,” Pineda said. “She loved nails and makeup. I told her I would get it (the salon) started, but conditions were she had to go to college and get her business degree.” While Alizé was in her senior year at Ocoee High, Pineda went to school last November and got certified to become a nail specialist. They rented the space in January and began work gutting the inside and cleaning it all out. Alizé insisted on a royalty theme and the color purple, so they picked out the chairs together — tall, white, throne-like chairs, fit for a prin-

Stephanie Pineda opened Naillinis Spa just outside Dr. Phillips on Oct. 22. The nail salon is a continuation of her late daughter Alizé Castro’s legacy.

the salon in Alizé’s honor. So she painted the walls and ceiling purple, and the chairs for the employees to sit in while working are purple velour with silver accents. On the wall by the front desk hangs a drawing of Alizé, a gift from someone at Ocoee High. Before the salon opened, Pineda was taking the plastic off of one of the throne chairs, which Alizé never got to sit in. As she unveiled the chair and was taking a photo of it, her phone died. But the screen didn’t go black. Instead, it froze on her lock screen — a picture of Alizé. The screen wouldn’t turn off or unfreeze until Pineda got home and did a soft reset on it. “It was as if she was so excited and so happy,” Pineda said. “It was

as if she told me, ‘Mom, I love it.’ I can say that I got validation from her telling me she loved it.” Alizé loved the name Naillinis, but now, Pineda wants to franchise the salon and open a larger location in Miami under the name Princess Ali Nails. “I think she would be absolutely in love with it,” Pineda said. “I’ve had customers cry with me a couple times. Connecting with the customers who see (the drawing) and start crying — I think that’s one of the biggest things for me — knowing that I didn’t give up. She knew me as a person who never gave up.”

We miss you so much Kelly! It’s hard to believe it has been 16 years since Heaven received a Beautiful Angel “Kelly”. Our lives were crushed, but your legacy lives on in your sons, Austin and Brandon. Both are doing well! Brandon and the boys are still in New York. Brantley & Gunnar are now 4 years old and Avery is 2 year old. Austin, Kylee and your grand daughter, Kynslee, now one year old, still live in Florida. Your grandchildren will grow up to know they have a wonderful and special Grandma in Heaven watching over them and their family.

The original plan was for Alizé to study business at Lynn University and then come home on the weekends to learn the business and the trade, with the eventual goal of her taking it over full-time. “She just wanted to know the trade — and she wanted to get her nails done all the time,” Pineda said. “She was like, ‘I want to get my nails done every other week!’” Before Alizé’s death, they only got as far as gutting it, due to waiting on obtaining necessary permitting. ARTS + CULTURE Winter Garden Art Association holds painting class for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia patients. BRITTANY GAINES STAFF WRITER

F

or two hours, the five men became artists. Soothing music filled the silence at SoBo Art Gallery while the men carefully swirled blue, yellow, brown and green paint onto a canvas. All five suffer from some form of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, but the painting session required no memory recall. In fact, the class had been created especially for them. For several years, Elizabeth McKinney, board chairwoman for the Winter Garden Art Association, dreamed about creating an art class for people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. Having taken care of her father for the last three years, she knew firsthand just how debilitating the mental disease could be. After discussing her idea during a Rotary Club meeting earlier this year, McKinney finally got the support necessary to turn her idea into a real class.

From The Allure of Joiner Street: When Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cook opened their coin-operated laundry in Winter Garden 18 years ago, it was the first such operation in West Orange County. Cook recalls, “People didn’t even know how to use it.” You could wash a load of clothes for 25 cents. … At the corner of Joiner and Woodland is the dry-cleaning business begun by Roy Fulmer Sr. back in 1936. … The only cobbler in West Orange is Ronald Monk at The Village Squire. … Memories of a rural childhood come rushing back in Beck’s Feed and Garden Supply. The business was started 25 years ago by J.N. McCord. … And then there’s the homecooked meals served seven days a week at Davies Restaurant, managed by Edna Ashberry.

Small stories announced who would be speaking at area clubs, who the Lakeview Red Devils football team would be playing and what changes officials were making in downtown Winter Garden. Making creative memories CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11A

On Nov. 21, the Winter Garden Art Association held its first class, called Paint a Memory, at the SoBo Gallery for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. “It was all through word of mouth,” McKinney said. “We’ll start small and see how it goes.” Several sponsors stepped up to help pay for supplies. Edith Gendron, of the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Resource Center, and Jennifer Campbell, of Age Advantage Senior Care Services, provided support for the classes. Without the support from her fellow Rotarians and the community, McKinney said she might never have gotten her idea off the ground. “They made it possible,” she said. Gendron screened each person to make sure he could handle the class, and Campbell provided one of her licensed caregivers to help the men during the class. One of the primary benefits

PAINT A MEMORY

The class provided the caregivers with a peace of mind knowing their loved one would be OK while they ran errands or treated themselves. The men who attended the first class followed the directions Joan Gueran provided, and their paintings slowly evolved into pictures of pears. “This is the stuff I love,” said Campbell, as she watched the class. “It’s a feel-good thing.” Contact Brittany Gaines at bgaines@orangeobserver.coml.

Are you looking for a new pet? Meet Kila. Kila (A362755) is a 9-year-old cat who was surrendered because her owner could no longer keep her. She is a sweet girl and she will purr as soon as you pet her. Kila is affectionate and loves to cuddle. She is a little shy at first, but she’ll warm up to you quickly, and you’ll see that all she wants is your love. She is a talkative kitty, and she can’t wait to find a forever home.

of the class was to provide an activity to people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia that required no memory work. “Being out in society reduces confusion,” Gendron said of those who suffer from the diseases. “The key to keeping Alzheimer’s and dementia (patients) content is by reducing confusion.” And because the artistic part of the brain is deep within the brain, Gendron said, it is typically the last area to feel the effects of Alzheimer’s or dementia. During the Nov. 21 class, each man was tasked with painting a pear, but each painting looked different. Some pears were larger, some were smaller, some more yellow, others more brown. But for those two hours, the men didn’t need their memories. They could simply look at the sample painting and try to imitate it — they only needed to paint. The class wasn’t just about giving the men something to do. It also provided the men’s caregivers with two hours of freedom. For McKinney, this was one of the most critical parts of creating this class. Looking back on her time as a caregiver, she recalled just how taxing it could become. “Some days, I just wanted an hour to just stare into a cup of coffee,” McKinney said.

Trey Griseck joins father in family business Mark Griseck, a Winter Garden resident and longtime high-school hoops coach, has been joined by his son on head coach Scott Williams’ staff at Apopka High. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

Maybe it was being around his dad at the dinner table, witnessing firsthand the stress that goes with being a high-school basketball coach — or maybe it was just a player who never wanted to acknowledge that his playing career might end — but Trey Griseck never saw himself becoming a basketball coach. As a father-son, coach-player duo at Olympia High from 2009 to 2012, Mark and Trey Griseck combined for three playoff appearanc-

Opportunities presented themselves to play professionally overseas, but none included the ability for him to bring his young daughter and fiance along with him. Cory Rahman came to Foundation Academy from East Ridge High as a junior and has made an immediate impact on both the varsity football and baseball programs on campus.

Foundation Academy senior Cory Rahman has a rare condition that gives him only 52% pulmonary function. But that hasn’t stopped him from assuming a leadership role for the Lions.

hen Cory Rahman sprints around the football field to make a big play — such as an interception returned for a touchdown, as he had in the regional championship this season — he can usually be heard when he returns to the sideline. The heavy breathing Rahman, a senior standout at Foundation Academy in football and baseball, exhibits has earned him the affectionate nickname “Darth Vader” from his teammates — not that the dynamic defensive back minds much. In a lot of ways, Rahman, who has just 52% pulmonary function — the equivalent of only one lung — is just appreciative to be on the field, doing what he loves and doing it well. Rahman has college football programs at the FCS, Division II and Division III levels clamoring for his services as a college athlete. On a more profound level, though, he’s also thankful to be alive.

Rahman puts in extra work

Isaac Titus The Legacy Charter soccer team is off to a 4-1 start, including an 8-0 victory against rival CFCA Nov. 18 during which freshman forward Isaac Titus score a whopping three goals. Titus has a total of four goals on the season so far.

What was it like to pull off a hat trick as a freshman? It’s a first for me, because it’s my first year playing high school soccer. I didn’t expect much — I didn’t even expect a starting position — so when I go out there and score three goals, I feel “holy cow.” It felt good. What are the differences in play you’ve noticed between club and varsity? I think Rush is a little more competitive, I think it’s a little harder. But high school is also pretty tough. What’s it like to represent the school on the field as opposed to a club team? It’s pretty sweet — it’s different. Which game left on the schedule are you most looking forward to? LIKE SUCKING AIR THROUGH A STRAW

THE BASICS

As a child, Rahman was initially misdiagnosed as having asthma. As Rahman navigated a childhood of playing any number of sports — characterized by natural athletic ability in spite of his thunderous breathing — that diagnosis was not called into question until, one day, his usual doctor wasn’t in when he went to pick up his medications before his Pop Warner football season at age 12. The fill-in doctor Rahman saw that day felt something wasn’t right. Rahman does not have asthma — in fact, the asthma medications he was taking turn out to have been worsening matters. What Rahman actually has is a condition known as a double-aortic arch, or a vascular ring. The condition involves an artery wrapping itself around Rahman’s esophagus and squeezing — and it is usually caught at a much younger age. “We ultimately found out it was like he was sucking air through a straw,” said Cory’s father, Jim Rahman. The doctor had more tests performed, and eventually, Cory had a surgical procedure at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children to remedy the situation. The hope was Rahman’s pulmonary functioning would return to normal, but because it was caught so late, the percentage jump was mild — from in the mid-40s to 52%. Still, six years later, Rahman is cognizant that had the false diagnosis not been caught, a different fate could have await-

15) — my brother, Jacob Titus, goes to Foundation. He plays football, but their season just ended, so I’m going to be going up against him and three other people I know on that team. I think it’s pretty exciting. What’s the sibling rivalry like between you two? We’re really close, so I’d say it’s just going to be fun. … I haven’t played with him for like eight years. What do you think you’d like to do for a career? I want to be a part of (the) New York Police Department. I’ve always watched the shows, and I’ve always thought it would be really cool to knock down cases and people who are not too good. What’s your favorite food? Sushi — I had it one time with my friend. I had never used to like it, but I tried it, and it blew my mind. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten? From my coach, Mr. (David) Hill, he said, “Don’t let your mind take you away from the game.”

ed him. “I’m so thankful that, by the grace of God, that they caught that,” Rahman said. “If it wasn’t for the doctor coming in, I would have died.” JUST GO HARD

Thankfully for Cory and his family, the knowledge of the condition, and no longer taking medications that worsen it, means he could continue to play sports as normal — sort of. “He has to listen to his body and work harder than the other guys,” Jim Rahman said. Judging by the results, it seems he has done both. Rahman, who came to Foundation for his final two years of high school after starting his varsity career at East Ridge High, has been a standout for coach Brad Lord’s football team in its two best seasons in program history. He also was the most valuable player of the baseball team this past spring. “I love having athletes, and I saw Cory and I saw the way he moved and stuff … they (the Rahmans) brought a winning

attitude to our program,” Lord said. “He’s like having a coach on the field — has a very high football-I.Q. It’s one of the reasons our defense played so well this season.” As a free safety for the Lions, Rahman amassed a team-high seven interceptions and also was the team’s fourth-leading tackler. As opposed to Pop Warner, where he played both sides of the ball and often had to take himself out of the game, high school has allowed Rahman to mostly focus on defense — although Foundation had an offensive package where he sometimes took direct snaps for special occasions — and thrive. Even still, it was an adjustment for Lord’s staff and Rahman’s teammates to know that he was OK when the heavy breathing occurred. “It’s scary as a coach — you don’t want your player injured, but you want your best player out there,” Lord explained. “So you really monitor it.” Rahman said the decision to come to Foundation was one of the best he and his family have made — especially after enduring a winless campaign as a sophomore at East Ridge. The family, which has relocated from Clermont to Windermere, is now excited to see how he does during baseball season. In a perfect world, Rahman would find a college where he could play both sports. But, thinking realistically, he also knows he may have to settle for just playing football. Of course, a challenge has never stopped this young man from trying — an attitude he is intent on taking with him to the collegiate level and toward whatever else the future may hold “I know I have to work harder, it’s satisfying to me,” Rahman said. “I never made my breathing as an excuse — I just go hard.” B:3”

The Metro Conference teams displayed an impressive turnaround last weekend at the Metro vs. Florida Challenge. After two years of being defeated handedly by their guests from throughout Florida, Metro teams won 17 of the event’s 22 games. Included in those winning efforts were significant victories for West Orange and Ocoee. The Warriors topped Lake Minneola 73-63 on the opening day of the event, Nov. 23, and the Knights edged Lake Highland Prep in a thriller Nov. 25, 68-67. for him, that I would coach. I always was like, ‘All right, this is not for me,’” Trey said. Upon reflection, it came down to not wanting to be away from the game he is so passionate about. “I just knew I couldn’t love anything else — I want to try and change kids’ lives,” Trey said. Since he left Olympia, Mark Griseck, who resides in Winter Garden, has joined the staff of longtime friend Scott Wiliams at Apopka High. When the two old friends caught wind of Trey’s newfound interest in joining the family business, they were elated — even if, at first, Mark tried to talk his son out of it. “(I said) ‘Don’t be a teacher and a coach — we don’t make any money, and it’s a lot of hours,’” Mark said. “Once you’re playing career comes to an end and you realize it’s over, you want to do something involved in it.” At Apopka, Trey has assumed several responsibilities as an assistant that include planning the team’s morning workouts, scouting opponents and working with the roster’s front court. Williams, who has coached state championship teams and is eager to revitalize the program at Apopka, said he has been impressed with his new assistant’s ability to connect with players. “He has a remarkable ability to connect with our young men, but yet draw a line — and that takes a lot of maturity,” Williams said. “He has an incredible servant’s heart.” The Blue Darters are off to a 3-0 start this fall, including an

impressive win in their opener against Boone. It was in that game that it hit the former star on the court that his new role was off of it — if only by a few inches. “After the first game ... it kind of really hit me that I’m on the other side of it — I’m on the other side of playing,” Trey said. Trey has learned plenty from his father and his college coaches over the years, but Mark thinks that his son starting his coaching career for Williams will also present an opportunity to learn from one of Central Florida’s top coaches. “The one thing Scott does so well is the emphasis on developing young men — we’re not in this to develop basketball players,” Mark said. “That’s the biggest lesson he’s going to learn from Coach Williams.” How long it might be before an opportunity comes along for Trey to become a head coach and build a program of his own is anyone’s guess. And when that opportunity comes along, Mark knows there will be another learning curve. “The basketball part and the practice part is the easy stuff,” Mark said. “The stuff you got to learn is how to do a purchase order and how to fundraise — that’s the stuff, when you’re a head coach, you’re like, ‘Whoa, this is a little different.’” Either way, the junior Griseck thinks he has found his calling in roaming the sidelines — just like the senior. “I absolutely think I’m going to do it for a very long time,” Trey said.

HOUSE + HOME BRITTANY GAINES STAFF WRITER

It’s beginning to look a lot like N

othing signals the start of the Christmas season quite like twinkling lights on trees and rooftops. And no two houses are exactly alike. From old-fashioned bulbs to lasers, styles vary across each neighborhood. But some homes are simply over-the-top, dripping in lights of all shapes, sizes and colors. The trick behind these jawdropping displays is a team of professional light installers — such as Light House Lighting Specialists — that spends hours — or even days — wrapping the home in Christmas cheer. Based in Dr. Phillips, Light House has been stringing up Christmas lights since 2008 and can use up to 100,000 lights on a single project. “We start talking to our clients in July, because you have to get all the elves on board to make sure that the logistics are in place,” said Light House cofounder Jay Cone. And with eight years of decorating experience, plus Cone’s extensive experience producing Disney’s Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing

Christmas!

For an over-the-top display, turn to the Christmas light pros.

Extravagant Christmas displays may take up to two days for professional light installers to install and could include up to 10,000 lights.

Lights, the crew knows a thing or two about exterior illumination. This year, it’s all about putting on a show, Cone said. “The big thing is self-programmable Christmas lights,” he said. “Everybody is going crazy over that stuff. And animated shows are starting to get really popular.” These days, instead of hunting for the most ornate Christmas light display in town, that hunt may include a search for lights that blink in time to Christmas music. And of course, LED lights are still the most popular. “Everybody wants to use LEDs,” Cone said. “We use primarily the five-millimeter, conical concave LED. It lets out a single light source, so it’s the brightest.” But everyone’s love of LEDs doesn’t mean incandescent bulbs are obselete. In fact, they’ve started to make a comeback, Cone said. “The big, old-style bulbs are coming back,” he said. “People want the warmth of the old bulb, so they don’t mind paying for it in
