Gotha Middle School seventh-grader Farrah Diogene was among the winners of Orange County’s recent Week of the Family Essay Contest. Diogene’s essay, on the theme, “My Family Is Strong Because,” focused on the strength she and her family felt following her grandmother’s death. “I cannot really say that my family should be awarded family of the year award,” she wrote. “But what I can say is that we care about each other and that we’ve been through a lot.” Farrah and her three siblings express feelings in writing and similar practices, which has helped them and their mother to emerge fine. “So I guess my family is strong,” she wrote. “We went through a lot but we’re still here.”

Developers from VHB presented a reduced plan of about 125 homes. BY ZAK KERR STAFF WRITER DR. PHILLIPS Locals at the Nov. 18
meeting at Sand Lake Elementary said they were prepared to fight any problems they had with a proposal for development around Lake Ruby. But once they heard the proposal, one resident remarked that there was nothing to fight about. VHB Inc. developers presented a plan to construct about 125 luxury homes on 17 specific acres at a 160-acre site at 7701 Palm Parkway, citing a desire to avoid adding apartments or excess traffic in the area. They are requesting a change in the future land use from Activity Center uses to LowMedium Density Residential — 10 dwelling units per acre. This would drop their number of units from 850 to 400, and that change would have to affect the whole parcel as a legality. Developer Jim Hall said the change would be necessary to legally avoid a minimum development requirement of about 850 units. The area would consist mainly of houses priced between $600,000 and $800,000, as well as town homes in the $400,000 to $600,000 range. The developers would forfeit their current ability to put commercial or office space in. “There are some three-story town homes that are occurring now that would be probably 40 to 45 feet, but they’re out here next to Palm Parkway,” Hall said. “It’s next to the 14-story building. We don’t really see it being that big of a deal.” Lake Ruby serves as a retention pond for the area. Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.

I-4 ULTIMATE UPDATE
District 1 Orange County Commissioner S. Scott Boyd said the Board of County Commissioners approved funding for a study to evaluate an interim I-4 interchange at Daryl Carter Parkway near attractions. FDOT has agreed to initiate an analysis to assess the viability of constructing an interim interchange, proposing that the analysis be included in the ongoing I-4 Systems Access Modification Report, Boyd said. The interim flyover could be complete within seven years. This project, if constructed, will serve as a temporary interchange until the Beyond the Ultimate I-4 project is fully constructed, which could be 15 years away and cost $70 million, he said. The interim interchange would include two ramps that tie into the existing Daryl Carter Parkway overpass and access Turkey Lake Road/Palm Parkway and Daryl Carter Parkway from I-4. The Beyond the Ultimate interchange is more complex with toll lanes, full access and constructed transit corridor, Boyd said. Expanding from I-4 to South Apopka-Vineland Road is an option county leaders are considering, he said.

Outdoor fun for everyone Venturing Crew 6 Orlando, an offshoot of Boy Scouts, is a group that regularly organizes outdoor adventures for teens and young adults. ZAK KERR STAFF WRITER DR. PHILLIPS Imagine you are the
parent of a teen who spends most afternoons on a computer, tablet or phone, and you are deliberating how to enthuse your child about exercise and the great outdoors. Or maybe you are a teen looking for peers with whom to go on adventures. Sure, there are Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts troops, but what about something without strings or badges attached, where boys and girls can plan varied activities they want to try? This is what Venturing Crew — a youth development program for all people ages 14 to 21 and 13-year-olds who have completed eighth grade — is all about. Activities can take participants around town or all over North America, including rafting, wilderness canoeing expeditions, cycling, rock climbing, diving, hiking, bowling, camping, fishing, zip lines, ropes courses, archery and shooting. The issue is people do not know about it or some similar

Boy Scout-sponsored programs, such as a boating-centric crew, said Tammie Bricarell, who oversees Venturing Crew 6 Orlando. “We do something at least once a month, depending on the weather and what’s going on at the time,” she said. “We’ve got golf coming up this month. The following month, I think, is going to be horseback riding. … They’ve got a lot they want to do but not enough time to do it.” This crew gathered canned goods from Boy Scout troops throughout Central Florida and boxed them for food banks, so there are service aspects, as well, all supervised, Bricarell said. “All adults have to have training, and we have strict guidelines,” Bricarell said. “None of the scouts are allowed to (date one
another). They enjoy hanging out with each other — whether they are on official crew activities or whether they do things on their own.” The Orlando group comprises about 16 participants, with 10 or so regulars, she said. “We have a couple of seniors who are going to remain because they enjoy it,” Bricarell said. “We have some National Honor Society students in there; some are computer geeks — they’re from all different directions, but they have all become close … best friends. They’re always welcome to more kids joining up.” To raise awareness of this venture crew, the members have started pages on social media, such as at facebook.com/venturingCrew6Orlando. And for those who are apprehensive, Bricarell said her daughter was wary at first, but now she is vice president and having a blast. “And now they’re good friends — if she has a problem at school, that’s who she’ll turn to,” Bricarell said. “Today, there’s a lot of kids who are just sitting inside. … These ones are having fun, they’re getting outside and they’re being kids still.” Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.

Because snakes have to use external heat sources to regulate their body temperatures, more residents of Horizon West have been finding them in their homes, especially as the days get cooler. Only six of Florida’s 44 snake species are venomous, but any snake can bite if provoked, and every snake belongs outdoors. “There’s no need to kill them; there’s no need to kill even the venomous ones,” said Peggy Lantz, who teaches Florida Master Naturalist Program courses at Oakland Nature Preserve. If you find a snake in your house, you can gently herd it outside with a broom or similar object. There, it can continue its natural behavior of controlling populations of rodents, roaches and other pests. “They’re all useful in our natural habitat — mostly by eating things that we like even less than snakes,” Lantz said. If you encounter a snake outdoors, you might want to identify it for your own interest, but regardless of whether it’s venomous, it’s best to leave it alone. “Most snakes are very secretive and don’t want to have anything to do with people,” Lantz said. “Mainly what we need to do is leave them alone and let them be.” Contact Catherine Kerr at ckerr@orangeobserver.com.

Red on black ... friend of Jack? Or might kill Jack? You can’t count on remembering a rhyme correctly in a critical moment of encountering a wild snake. The easiest way to distinguish a coral snake (VENOMOUS) from a non-venomous scarlet king snake is the color of the ring at the end of the nose. If it’s black, it’s a coral snake. If it’s red (scarlet), it’s a scarlet king snake.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR value of surrounding Winter Park property. I know all of this because my late cousin’s work in Pittsburgh was the model for The Historic Preservation Act of 1966, which created The National Register of Historic Places. We’ve seen this overdevelopment movie before. A few years ago, a Windermere over-developer tried to build a 70,000-square-foot behemoth on property he had purchased across from Windermere’s City Hall. I founded Friends of Windermere to save the finest remaining Old Florida village in
the state. It took me five years to obtain a “threatened listing” for Windermere from The National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Winter Park and Cypress Gardens “threatened listings” took about a third of that time. Over-development devalues the entire village of Windermere. The over-developer is betting the county commissioners will fall for the “siren song of taxrevenue windfalls at the expense of unique scenic quality,” as I remarked in a 2006 column, “Stakes for Windermere, Winter Park.” All Windermere citizens need to light up the switchboards of their county commissioners, congressmen — you name it.

Dear Editor: Winter Park didn’t fall for it. Neither should Windermere residents in the unlikely event the county commissioners abdicate their responsibility. HOW TO HELP AN INJURED BIRD It is illegal to harm, harass or possess any wild bird. But you are allowed to rescue a wild bird as long as you take it to a permitted facility as soon as possible. Here’s what you should do if you find an injured bird of prey: n Be careful. Talons and beaks are designed to kill and tear prey. n Note the exact location of the bird so it can be returned there after rehabilitation. If the bird is a hatchling or juvenile, look for a nearby nest and note its exact location. n Get a box that is slightly larger than the bird and poke lots of air holes into the sides. Place the box over the bird. Carefully slide something flat under the box to contain the bird. n Do not try to give the bird food or water. n Transport the bird to a wildlife center. Call (407) 644-0190 for the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey or go to wildliferehabber.org to find a different location.

As of Oct. 23, though, that “crazy idea” is a reality, and the two local residents are partners. HUB 925 opened in the Venezia Plaza shopping center on Sand Lake Road. The meaning behind the name, HUB 925, is simpler than some might guess. Partners Piper Hood and Cathy Cavins chose “hub” as an allusion to a gathering place or a focus of activity, commerce or transportation. It also is meant to pair with the store’s décor, which has a train theme. The numbers “925” could be mistaken as an address or a reference to an area code, but they are actually meant to represent the average workday — 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

co-working space) is just to say it’s a place to go and get work done,” Hood said. From personal experience, Hood said working from home sometimes is not all it is cracked up to be. The home environment can be distracting and isolating, and a co-working space can provide the camaraderie and energy of an office — without the actual office, she said. HUB 925 offers a variety of work area options within its 2,000-square-foot location. There are individual desks, tables, high-top tables, lounge areas for informal meetings and discussions, and conference rooms. The location includes business-class WiFi, two private phone booths for important phone calls, the ability to print, scan, fax or copy, and a full-service coffee bar and power snacks in the afternoons. And, as is the case with other co-working spaces — as the model becomes increasingly popular nationally — HUB 925 can be a place where entrepreneurs and professionals can network with other members, too. One of the big selling points so far for the new space is its unique, trendy décor that is designed to impress and to fuel creativity. “We kind of zeroed in on this whole industrial look,” Hood said. “We knew we didn’t want a traditional office or call center look. Since we’ve opened, every person that walks in the door says, ‘Wow, this is cool.’ I think (the decor is) the No. 1 thing that draws people in.” Hood and Cavins also are

excited about their specific location — along Restaurant Row, in the same plaza as popular restaurants such as Rocco’s Tacos and having a close proximity to Interstate 4, International Drive and the Orange County Convention Center. HUB 925 offers different options for members, based on how many days a week they would like to use the space. A top-tier option includes a business mailing address, private storage, a toll-free telephone number and conference room hours. Although this model was part of the equation from the beginning, another arose — once again — to meet a need. When a freelance photographer sought the ability to just rent one of the two conference rooms for her meetings, that opened the partners’ eyes to a new possibility. Now, conference rooms are available to rent by the hour, and the venue itself is available to rent after business hours. “It could have an alter-ego,” Cavins said of the space. “It’s got the daytime, serious, nineto-five atmosphere for working. But, then it can also expand into a social networking and business networking after-hours (venue).” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

Area business leaders head back to class for teach-in
TRAVELIN’ TIMES
JENNIFER NESSLAR STAFF WRITER
Staff members from the West Orange Times & Observer and the Windermere Observer joined dozens of other business professionals to discuss their professions Nov. 18 during the 2015 Great American Teach-In. Executive Editor Michael Eng, Senior Sports Editor Steven Ryzewski and Staff Writer Jennifer Nesslar spent the afternoon in two classrooms at Independence Elementary to teach fourth- and fifth-graders about the newspaper industry. Nesslar also demonstrated how to conduct an interview, with fourth-grader Brady Schultz and fifth-grader Rachel Marshall as interviewees.
Brady Schultz, a fourth-grade student at Independence Elementary, hopes to become a running back someday. But he doesn’t shy away from school work. He enjoys studying science and long division in school. “I like to learn about nature and how people have invented,” he said.
Craig and Kathy Lopus, of Tim’s Wine Market Windermere, have the honors of being the first readers to travel with the Windermere Observer. They took their favorite community newspaper with them on a recent trip to the Napa Valley. “Goes to show what good taste your publication has, right?” Craig says.

The staff was friendly and polite. The food was very fresh. We ordered the filet mignon and prawn hibachi lunch that included soup, rice and veggies. I added noodles. It was fantastic. The prices are very reasonable. We definitely will be back to try the sushi! Toolbox for Composition C
omposition in photography tends to be talked about as a set of “rules” — how to place, arrange and depict the elements within the image. But it’s more helpful to think of a collection of techniques or tools to choose from when determining how best to photograph something. And don’t restrict yourself to just one of these techniques - part of the fun is mixing and matching to make the most of an image — adding impact and interest!
Rule of Thirds. Imagine dividing the image like a tic-tac-toe grid — the strongest areas of interest are then placed on the lines or where the lines cross. But here, we’ve also used a shallow depth of field to throw the background out of focus — and color contrast. Her face is lit by a lightbulb behind an umbrella — setting the camera white balance to “tungsten” is correct for her and makes the background daylight look very blue. The eye is drawn to warmer colors. Fill the frame. For more impact — make your subject fill the image — either by zooming your lens or getting closer. This composition also uses symmetry.
DAVID HAYNES
David Haynes is a photographer and cinematographer who has traveled the world capturing iconic images for organizations such as National Geographic and the BBC. His work can be seen in magazines, newspapers, and book covers. His column appears monthly.
Frame within a frame. Try using doors and windows to frame your subject within the frame of the photo. Here, the steel safety line running through the door helps to connect the foreground frame to the subject and beyond while the vertical ladder adds lines leading the eye up to the hatch in the roof. Leading Lines. Lines can add real impact to an image — the eye can’t help but be drawn along them. Using a super-wide angle lens adds perspective, drawing the eye along the length of the airplane to the horizon. Using symmetry works well for this subject — but chances are your eye is drawn initially to the open hatch in the top of the image — where the symmetry is broken.

CLASS NOTES
Faith inspires puppet show CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15
Windermere Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year is Shannon Reid.
OCPS earns green award Orange County Public Schools has been named a Silver Level District by the Florida Green School Network in recognition of systemic changes that promote environmental sustainability. The award was one of six presented at the seventh annual Learn Green: Florida’s Green Schools Conference, held Nov. 16 in Boynton Beach. The award recognizes environmentally friendly measures undertaken districtwide, including by schools and by the facilities, operations and transportation departments. Those efforts include switching to biodiesel fuels, building schools to green standards and schools that have reduced their carbon footprint through increased recycling and reduced energy use. Marc Clinch, facilities program director, oversees green initiatives for the Facilities Depart-
ment within the 197,000-student district, the 10th-largest in the nation. OCPS was the recipient of the 2013-14 Florida Schools District Level Award and the Florida nominee for the 2014-2015 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Award.
OCPS to host job fair Orange County Public Schools will host its next Teacher Job Fair from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Edgewater High School, 3100 Edgewater Drive, Orlando. The district is hiring for the 2015-16 school year. School administrators will be on-site to conduct interviews and extend offers for employment. Those attending the fair must register and complete a job fair profile on ocps.net; bring a teaching certificate or statement of eligibility; and bring multiple copies of his or her résumé.
Windermere Union Church
The 2- and 3-year-old children at Windermere Union Church Preschool had a wonderful time celebrating Thanksgiving at their feast. They sang songs and played their drums with their music teacher, and then they enjoyed a special snack in their classrooms.
Keohane remembers having the ability to see performances at five puppet theaters as a child growing up in New York, but the opportunity to witness this genre is rare in Florida. He used to manage Pinocchio’s Marionette Theater at Altamonte Mall, but since Pinocchio’s closed, he has developed a vision for a permanent, nonprofit puppet theater in Winter Garden. Keohane wants the new theater to be folksy and fun, evoking themes of the history of puppetry but also the history of Florida. He just needs to find a place for it. Until then, Keohane will be organizing performances at other venues in the community, including a Christmas show that was born from his relationship with the Henson family, who created the muppets. About 15 years ago, Jane Henson wanted to create a Nativity show, and she asked Keohane to write it. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop in New York built the puppets and a professor from the University of Central Florida built the set. “It’s the story of the birth of baby Jesus, biblically based, gospel-based,” Keohane said. “It’s basically the Bible turned into old English drama, and they were very good dramatists.” Jane funded the show’s tour to schools and churches for a few years, but then she died. In 2013, CBS broadcasted a special of an abridged version of the show, filmed at a New York cathedral. But the show hasn’t been seen since. Keohane wanted to revive the show this year, but without continued funding from the Hensons, he has to raise money to make it happen. The first stop on the tour is in Michigan, but the show will be coming Jan. 9, 2016, to Episcopal
Church of the Messiah in Winter Garden, where Suzanna Leigh is a parishioner. Leigh, now 70, is known for her roles as an actress in British movies in the 1960s and 1970s, including a starring role with Elvis Presley in the film “Paradise, Hawaiian Style.” Leigh will be playing the puppet of Elizabeth in the Nativity show. She said puppetry is a great type of performance for children because they can interact with the characters, unlike watching TV. “When you shout out to the baddie or the goodie, they actually respond to you,” Leigh said. “The child’s face is absolutely riveted.” Proceeds from the performance at Episcopal Church of the Messiah will be donated to the church’s sponsorship of a Christian family from the Middle East that was displaced by ISIS. “Culturally, (the Nativity) is a good story with a great message, and it relates today because the holy family becoming refugees at the end of the show, they have to flee for their lives,” Keohane said. Other churches that are interested in hosting a performance this season or for Christmas 2016 can contact Keohane at nativity story2015@gmail.com.

TITAN SOCCER CRUISES The Olympia Titans boys soccer team returned from break Nov. 30 and defeated Gateway 9-1. Juan Duarte, Bryce Gilgalion and Mostafa Diab scored goals for the Titans (7-0-1).
WOHS ADVANCES The West Orange Warriors defeated Mandarin (Jacksonville) 41-26 Nov. 27 in the Class 8A, Region 1 Championship to advance to the state semifinals for the first time in program history. West Orange High (12-1) will travel to take on Osceola (12-1) at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4.
Dr. Phillips High School swim coach Natalie Nickson reflected on her experiences as Supra’s coach — and friend. “As a coach we can wait a lifetime for an athlete like Ian,” she wrote. “The one who not only makes his teammates and the team better instantly, but the one who changes you as a coach and human being. Ian was that person and so much more. From the moment he (dived) in the pool, my life and everyone around him was never the same. “Even when he got sick, he handled it with all the grace, humor and poise everyone had come to expect from him,” Nickson wrote. “He was more concerned about how everyone else was handling it than he was about himself. I remember after a grueling 12-hour surgery in Pittsburgh, when I finally got to see him, one of the first things he said to me was, ‘Thank you for being so tough on me all those years. It makes all of this seem easy.’ And we smiled and laughed.”

housands around the Dr. Phillips community — and, indeed, the Central Florida community at large — woke up Nov. 24 to the news that Ian Supra had died. The news was announced via the Facebook page of his mother, Jacqueline Clemons Supra. “Early this morning, our precious son, Ian, went home to God,” she wrote. “Ian graced so many with his gifts, and we know he will be profoundly missed. We also know you’ll remember him for his kindness, humor, and passion for life.” Supra, who turned 20 in August, was known for being a funny, kind and positive young man and was a star swimmer who also served as captain of the Dr. Phillips High School boys water polo team. He got a diagnosis of stage IV esophageal cancer in January 2014. The news of his death was met with an outpouring of emotion on social media, where friends, classmates, teammates – and even those who never knew him but were inspired by his story — shared memories, condolences or ways in which Supra had affected their lives. Many used the hashtag “#SupraStrong” and interacted with the Facebook and Twitter accounts, which were operated by a group of his close friends. A memorial service for Ian Christopher Supra will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Dec. 12, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.

The Ian C. Supra Memorial Foundation is in the midst of its formation process, with a YouCaring.com crowd-funding campaign underway. On the day the fundraising page was created, Team Supra’s Facebook declared that “The Ian C. Supra Memorial Foundation will solidify his place in history by helping youth for years to come.” Even during his battle with cancer, Supra was passionate about helping others and connected with several other cancer patients he sought to help. Those efforts notably included Ryder Snow, a 4-yearold with incurable brain cancer, whose family he helped with fundraising efforts. A formal announcement concerning the Ian C. Supra Memorial Foundation is forthcoming. As of Dec. 1, nearly $2,000 of the desired $10,000 already had been raised. For more information, or to donate, visit bit. ly/21rWv56.

DP football season ends in one-point loss
SPONSORED BY SHANNON TILL STATE FARM IN FOWLER GROVES
Kelly Rowswell Kelly Rowswell is a senior goalie for the Windermere Prep girls soccer team and has committed verbally to playing that position for Rollins College. She decided to play basketball this season, too, and is the team’s top scorer with an average of about 22 points per game through the team’s first three wins, including one on the same day as a soccer game.
How long have you been playing soccer and basketball? I started playing soccer and basketball when I was 6 at the YMCA, and I played both up until the eighth grade. Then when I went to high school, I had to choose because they were the same season, and I chose soccer and had to quit basketball. Just this year I was able to play both because of Coach (Greg) Stone and Coach (Rebecca) Dyer. What’s your schedule like while playing two sports? Basically, soccer comes first, and I go to basketball whenever I can. Sometimes soccer is right after school, and then I’ll have to go to basketball right after that, and then I just go home, take an ice bath and then go for the next day. (laughs) And then if I have two games on the same day, I’ll go to the soccer game.
Does that conflict happen a lot? It’s not too bad. I try to make it as much as possible for both because I love playing both sports.
ZAK KERR STAFF WRITER DR. PHILLIPS The Panthers were
rolling on home turf Nov. 27 at Bill Spoone Stadium. After they had allowed two touchdowns on the Osceola Kowboys’ first two drives, the defense was stalwart while the offense mounted a comeback. With 19 straight points, Dr. Phillips took a five-point lead into the fourth quarter of the FHSAA Class 8A Region 2 Championship. Five minutes deep in that final quarter, the Panthers faced third-and-8 from their 13, prepared to punt if the play had failed. Instead, some confusion on a rollout led to an under-thrown pass Trey Shine snatched from the sky and then returned 16 yards for an Osceola touchdown. The Kowboys failed to convert on the next play, but their 20-19 lead proved enough to end Dr. Phillips’ season — for a second consecutive season in the regional final. “We had a guy open; he just under-threw it,” head coach Rodney Wells said of that gamewinning pick-six. “They caught it and made it a big play.”” As Wells had predicted, Osceola pounded Dr. Phillips with its rushing attack all game, throwing few enough passes to count on one hand. First, the Kowboys ground out 65-yard drive on the first possession of the game, taking 5:13 to do it. On their next possession, Malcolm Davidson bolted through the defense on third down for almost 80 yards and a touchdown. “They came out ready to play; we came out and made a few mistakes — costly mistakes,” Wells said. “They scored 14 points on their first two possessions. On the defense, they didn’t score again.” The Panther sideline and
Do you have a favorite memory playing soccer here? I guess just seeing everyone advance each practice, each week as the year goes on. A lot of these girls have only been playing in high school, so I like helping the girls improve on their game and seeing them improve and being happy at the end of the season. What made you decide to play goalie? I’ve been playing goalkeeper since I was 10, so that’s been seven years now. The other one got injured, and my coach just threw me in, and I loved it so much. I’ve just gotten used to the hits and taking one for the team, giving up the body. What made you choose to pursue soccer in college? I’ve been verbally committed to Rollins since the end of my sophomore year, and I just fell in love with the campus and the coaches and all the players that are currently on the team. They finished second in the nation last year. What do you want to study in college? I’m between either psychology or biochem, because I want to go be a doctor. Do you have a favorite class in school? I think either IB Psychology with Miss (Beth) Isley or IB Math with Miss (Hillary) McCormick. What do you like to do if you ever get free time? I like to hang out with my family and friends — go to the movies, go to the beach — which is very rare.

crowd were silent, until Jaquarius Bargnare sparked a rally with an acrobatic leaping reception in the end zone for 32 yards in the final minute of the first half. “That was a smart play, big play,” Wells said. “We needed some life; we needed some energy. When we put up seven, we knew we (would) be there.” And with a deficit of 14-7 to start the second half, Dr. Phillips did get there via Alvin Bryant’s 50-yard dash to make it

two touchdowns apiece. But the Panthers missed the extra point. The defense bent but ultimately broke the Kowboys’ subsequent drive with a fumble recovery at the Dr. Phillips 24. Within seconds, Emare Hogan brushed off a tackle and sprinted for a touchdown of about 77 yards for a 19-14 Panthers lead. Dr. Phillips decided to go for two points but again failed, which mathematically was the difference. “If you have a great effort, a great attitude, do things in class, that’s what our program’s about,” Wells said among his final thoughts on the season. “We’’ll continue to work hard, and good things will always happen to people who do things the right way.”” Bryant, a senior, also offered advice after his final game. “Take advantage of every opportunity, because it can be gone in the blink of an eye,” he implored his younger teammates.” Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.

stretch, but if there is one silver-lining, glass-half-full outcome from the Dr. Phillips football team’s playoff loss Nov. 27 against Osceola, it is that the Panthers varsity basketball team now will be whole this week. Of course, being down five players — and three starters — didn’t stop Dr. Phillips from jumping out to a 2-0 start this winter with a pair of wins at the annual Metro vs. Florida Challenge at Apopka High last week. The Panthers entered their first game of the regular season Nov. 25, a week later than most programs, arriving at the three-day event to face a Poinciana team that already had two wins to its credit prior to tipoff. Despite those obstacles, a putback basket by Daniel Love with two seconds remaining elevated Dr. Phillips to a 59-58 win — leaving veteran coach Anthony Long feeling pretty good about the way his team started the 2015-2016 campaign. “(I’m) just really, really proud of our team — we really competed well,” Long said. Titans follow upset with letdown at Challenge
SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR APOPKA Two different days. Two
very different results. The Olympia boys basketball team scored an impressive upset victory No. 27 at the Metro vs. Florida Challenge at Apopka High, defeating heavily favored The First Academy, 56-54. A pair of free throws by Ronaldo Segu with 2.8 seconds remaining sealed the win for the Titans — their first of the season. What’s more, Olympia rallied from down 13 points earlier in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, playing the next day against another team with a blue-chip recruit, the Titans (1-4) did not fare as well.
were more ready to play at the beginning, and defensively, we communicated a little better.” Of the Titans’ many underclassmen, Ronaldo Segu’s success should be pivotal. Segu picked up an offer from Florida State, and with the increased attention from recruiters, so too has come increased attention from opposing teams for the sophomore. Against the Royals, Segu shined with 23 points and seven rebounds, but against the Patriots he amassed just seven points and five rebounds. Still, there is a lot to be excited about with the young Titans standout and his teammates. “From this year to last year, (Segu is) a lot more comfortable getting in the paint,” Wheeler said. “They’re putting a lot of pressure on him, and he’s just got to make sure he takes good shots.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

Olympia was soundly defeated by Lake Brantley, 64-31, with Notre Dame-signee John Mooney leading the way for the Patriots (5-0) with 20 points and 14 rebounds. For coach Matt Wheeler, the drastically different outcomes showcased his team’s potential — and also how far it has to go. “I know we’re young; I have a lot of young kids and they’re talented,” Wheeler said. “We’ve got to learn how to bring it each day, each possession. It’s a process.” Wheeler noted Olympia’s zone defense, normally a strength, looked slow against Lake Brantley. Although he knows his kids need to work on consistency, he also feels the win over The First Academy (2-1) is a boost ahead of a game Dec. 4 at West Orange. “(Beating The First Academy) brought some confidence, but we still can’t just show up and play — we have to do all the little things, each game,” Wheeler said. “We

Meritage Homes recently opened its multi-million dollar amenity center for homeowners at Watermark, one of the homebuilder’s largest single-family communities, located off Seidel Road in Winter Garden. Tatiana Souza, vice president of sales for Meritage Homes in the Orlando region, said the resort-style amenity center, which took a year to complete, is situated on a hill overlooking the entire Watermark community. Souza said one of the most significant features is a unique rooftop observation and party deck for residents to enjoy dramatic views of the community and the nearby nightly fireworks in the sky above Walt Disney World. Watermark’s amenity center also features a 6,000-square-foot clubhouse with two gathering rooms that can accommodate up to 200 people, two full catering kitchens, an outdoor kitchen, workout room, two tennis courts, a resort-style swimming pool with children’s splash zone and built-in playground on the deck. Meritage plans to build more than 800 new energyefficient homes at Watermark in four phases, with 54 homesites in the first phase alone. Three- to six-bedroom plans are priced from the mid $200,000s.

Area Realtor employs new 3D technology CONTINUED FROM 1B
A new software called Matterport, which has been praised by outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Forbes and Silicon Valley Business Journal, allows real-estate agents to create interactive 3D models of interior spaces. Anyone interested in a modeled home or business can see a 360-degree view and click their way through the space without ever setting foot on the property. Realtor Carol Faber is an agent for Keller Williams Classic Realty and serves Bay Hill, Dr. Phillips, Windermere, Winter Garden and other communities in the Orlando area. She started Matterport in April 2015 and said she was the first person to use it in Central Florida. “It’s the same as Google Earth, but for interior spaces,” she said. “It’s like you took the roof out and took a picture of it. … It amazes me every time I do it.” Faber sets up a special camera designed by Matterport in the center of each room and corridor of a space. The camera records 360-degree images and then sends them to Matterport, where algorithms are used to create a dollhouse-like model. At first, Faber used Matterport just for her Keller Williams listings. But other agents started asking her to scan their properties as well, so she created a secondary business just for her work with Matterport.
24/7 OPEN HOUSE To take an interactive tour of some of the properties Faber has scanned with Matterport, visit carolinafaber.com and click on “Tours.” In the dollhouse view, click in any room to set yourself there; then use the keyboard and mouse to navigate through the space.
“Selling a house when you are occupying it is quite unpleasant. Having to keep it in showing order all the time with kids is impossible,” Faber said. “So with Matterport, if a buyer sees the 3D dollhouse and floorplan … and then wants to see it in person, you have a greater chance of closing. “It creates a 24/7 open house — great for gated communities — and generates leads for both sellers and buyers.” Faber said Matterport is always looking for ways to enhance its product, and virtual reality glasses could soon allow users to be fully immersed in a remote interior space. To contact Faber about creating a 3D model of your home or business, call her at (407) 5383831 or email carol@carolinafaber.com. Contact Catherine Kerr at ckerr@orangeobserver.com.
