in more than two decades, Ocoee has a new mayor. Voters selected longtime City Commissioner Rusty Johnson to lead the city — at least until March 15, 2016, when the regular election takes place. New Ocoee Mayor Rusty Johnson hopes to lead the city into a new era of growth. He will run for the seat again in the March election.

Dean Mongold’s retirement celebration last week included many faces from his past. The Oakland postmaster has decided it’s time to retire from the U.S. Postal Service, and the town of Oakland held a party for him last week at the Oakland Meeting Hall adjacent to the post office. Current and former postmasters from Groveland, Winter Garden, Windermere and Oakland were there for Mongold’s sendoff. He was presented a gold clock, among other congratulatory items. “I’m not sure what we’re going to do without you,” Mayor Kathy Stark said. “If we ever needed to know what was going on in the town, all we had to do was ask Dean. This is the essence of a small town.” Town Manager Dennis Foltz said of Mongold: “You are a real icon in this town. … It will never be the same without you.”

Avalon Road preps for developments Developers are in early stages at key intersections, but road construction began Monday, Nov. 30. BY ZAK KERR STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN Not quite four

Jennifer Nesslar

Tiffany Ridgley, Danielle Pascucci, Diahann Messeguer, Winnie Harrell and Melinda Thompson are working together to create the boxes for children who are hospital-bound this Christmas.

LOOK OUT SANTA:

Moms make their own list A Winter Garden moms group is assembling gifts for children who must spend the holidays in the hospital. STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN

The Christmas before her father-in-law died, Winnie Harrell and her family spent the holiday with him in the hospital. It was her son’s first Christmas, and Harrell found it a disappointing way to spend the holiday. “Even though we had a Christmas tree, even though we had our family there, it was still — you’re not home,” she said. Two years later, the memory of the experience of Christmas in the hospital still sticks with Harrell. But this year, she’s a part of a group that is helping her do something about it. The Winter Garden Mommies Facebook group is bringing Harrell’s idea to fruition. The group is organizing a Build a Box project where they are making 200 Christmas boxes for children at Florida Hospital South in Orlando. The shoeboxes are filled with age-appropriate gifts for children ages 3 and up. The moms plan to fill the boxes with gifts that will entertain children but not require the kids to be active while they are in the hospital. Stuffed animals, stickers, small cars, books, cray-

ons, puzzles and sketch pads are some of the items. On Dec. 23, the group will deliver the boxes to the hospital, and the hospital will work to make the experience even more meaningful for the children. The nurses will bring the gifts overnight and lay them at the end of the children’s beds. When the patients wake up on Christmas morning, they will find their present. The hospital expects to have 120 children in the hospital on Christmas morning, but the moms want to make sure they make enough boxes so every child in the hospital can have one. The extras will be handed out later. The hospital has a capacity for 200 children, so the group is making 200 boxes. They hope to have all donations in by Dec. 20, but the group is eager to receive donations whenever it is possible. “Honestly, if someone calls me on the 23rd in the morning, I would still take it,” said Melinda Thompson, a group administrator. The group hopes that Build a Box is a success so it can continue to do it for years to come. The Winter Garden Mommies was started by Tiffany Ridgley at the beginning of 2015. She had recently moved to the area and wanted to meet other local moms. In less than a year, the group has grown to more than 650 members on Facebook. They are a resource for one another and often get together for play dates with their children. Contact Jennifer Nesslar at jnesslar@orangeobserver.com.

GET INVOLVED n Make a box. If you would like to be involved in the whole process of making a box, fill a shoebox with items appropriate for kids age 3 and up. Leave edible items and perfumes out of box. Wrap the box, but do not wrap it shut. Wrap the lid and the bottom of the box separately. n Donate items for a box. Toys don’t need to be new, but they must be in good shape. The group is accepting gifts to put inside the box, as well as shoe boxes and wrapping paper. To donate items or boxes, drop off at Ginza Japanese Steak House, 8933 W. Colonial Drive, Ocoee, or Melinda Thompson will pick up your items. Contact Thompson at melinda.thompson86@ yahoo.com. n Give money. If you don’t have time to put together a box, the moms are happily accepting donations. They estimate the average cost of a box is $10. Donate via Melinda Thompson’s PayPal — dougt333@gmail.com.

A pair of projects on Avalon Road began Nov. 30. n Over the creek flowing between Black Lake and Johns Lake is a small road bridge on Avalon Road maintained by Orange County. It is a frequented fishing spot next to the Johns Lake Conservation Area, about oneand-one-half miles south of State Road 50. Prime Construction will be working nine months on a $1.5 million box culvert replacement project. “The project consists of a temporary road, removal of existing storm pipes from Black Lake to John Lake, installation of a double 9-feet-by-5-feet box culvert and then installation of a new road,” Orange County Project Manager Mike Wehrfritz said. n A city of Winter Garden project involves work at Avalon and Marsh roads, not long after work at the next intersection south with Tilden Road finished.

retention pond stretched along its northern border, just behind 16,200 square feet of medical office abutting a 5,310-squarefoot expansion. An access from Marsh Road would lead into this outlot, where Sperry Van Ness officials say a major medical tenant has signed. The final structure would be in Outlot 2, the middle 1.103 acres, and rely on the other access points. That building would be a 4,000-square-foot quick-service restaurant. Banking and other retail services are under consideration at this site. Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.

miles of Avalon Road currently qualify as part of Winter Garden, but from end to end, several projects are in the works near the neighborhoods collectively referred to as Tildenville and Stoneybrook West. To start, at Avalon Road’s northern tip is its intersection with State Road 50, where J Wallace & Associates own the southwestern parcel, dubbing it Shoppes at Avalon. Stuart Henderson, who oversees the company’s day-to-day operations, said there are no plans to begin buildout yet. “We’re kind of still in the works with some stuff right now,” he said. “We’re definitely not a go-ahead for any type of construction. … I know that there has been plans approved by the city of Winter Garden a while back, as well as the St. Johns (River) Water Management District, to build a building on that site. It’s just a matter of when we’re ready to do it, we’ll do it.” But preliminary plans do exist for another location almost three miles south with the name Shoppes at Avalon, at the northwest corner of the intersection of Avalon and Marsh roads with Stoneybrook West Parkway. This 5.48-acre Sperry Van Ness parcel is just east of Zion New Life Lutheran Church and just south of Avalon Reserve. Although developers are not ready to announce further details at this time, a concept plan of the site shows five structures and 228 parking spaces. In the southeast corner — closest to the intersection — are accesses from Marsh and Avalon roads to Outlot 1, which would house a 6,119-square-foot convenience store and gas station on the easternmost 1.904 acres of the plat. The westernmost 2.465 acres — Outlot 3 — would hold a

ing to unofficial results on the Orange County Supervisor of Elections website, Johnson received 1,270 votes (50.34%), while Sills took 1,253 votes (49.66%). Johnson received four early votes and 602 absentee votes. Sills got three early votes and 554 absentee. “It was 17 votes, but I won,” Johnson said Tuesday night. “I’m just happy. It’s been a lot of work the last few months. My family and my friends have worked hard to get me here, and we’ll work on running the city for the next four months. And then after four months, I’ll run again.” The runoff election followed a special election Oct. 27 that included Johnson, Sills and a third challenger, Ronney Oliveira. The runoff was required because none of the three garnered at least 50% of the votes at that time. Johnson, 69, is a longtime Ocoee city commissioner and an Ocoee resident since 1955. His community involvement also includes serving as a charter member and president of the Ocoee Jaycees; member of the Ocoee Little League executive board; executive board member of the Ocoee Bulldogs Pop Warner Program; president of the Ocoee Junior High Athletic Program; president of the West Orange High School Diamond Club; and vice chairman of the National League of Cities Small Cities Council. During his campaign, Johnson said he wants to help the city grow but also maintain its heritage. “I have long been a proponent M a s c o t t ethe t o Warea inter G en of revitalizing ofa r dour historic downtown,” he said. “I have already pushed for the necessary studies for beginning this revitalization in years past, and we now have several key things positioned for a major downtown redevelopment effort to occur. We are in great position to move the project forward. “My family has been in Ocoee for a long time,” Johnson said. “While I am all for the growth we need (for) a balanced economy, the context and character under LAKE which itCOUNTY occurs is very important. We have a rich agricultural heritage, and I feel we can preserve some of that through strategic economic development.” Now as mayor, Johnson said Look for this sign the route for he is excited to workdesignated foralonghis conbus stops. stituents. “The city commissioners are ready to move this city forward in the right direction, and that’s what we’re going to do,” he said. “This is the town I love. “Ocoee is one of the few places left that is (more than) 40,000 in population where people are still very friendly and where you still see a lot of families doing things together,” Johnson said. “In Ocoee, we have excellent schools, an excellent housing base, excellent parks and a rich agricultural heritage.” District 1 Commissioner John Grogan has been serving as interim mayor since S. Scott Vandergrift stepped down. He now will return to his commission seat. Johnson was sworn in at the Dec. 1 meeting.

Ocoee Junior Civitan Club celebrates induction STAFF WRITER OCOEE A passion

for community service is alive and well at Ocoee High School in the form of its Junior Civitan Club, which celebrated an induction ceremony and its 10th anniversary Nov. 19. Club officials estimate 30 to 35 members are in their group, which stays active through many projects in the community. “We’ve done various service projects, such as: volunteering at Westbrooke Elementary School for their Fall Carnival, volunteering for the Love Grows organization by packing seeds to send to disaster victims in the Dominican Republic, showing our support by walking in the Walk Against Breast Cancer at Lake Eola and volunteering at Health Central

Park for Halloween Bingo,” member Jasmine Cornileus said. “Next will be even more community projects; the most recent (was) packing food with the Food for Families organization on Thanksgiving Eve.” The 28th Annual Light Up Winter Garden is among the next events where members will lend a hand, member Serena Persaud said. Other projects Cornileus listed were volunteering at the Woman’s Club of Ocoee, organizing candy messages for Valentine’s Day, participating in the SeaWorld Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics, writing letters and making goody bags for veterans on Veterans Day. “We’ve done a lot,” she said. “My favorite was volunteering at the Woman’s Club, sending treats and thanks to the veterans and

packing seeds.” Persaud’s favorite is helping with the Westbrooke Elementary School Fall Carnival, she said. “Something that goes through my mind while I volunteer is the happiness I feel when I see the kids smile,” Persaud said. Cornileus said giving back to her community in a meaningful way has been fun to the point she wants to continue her service after high school. She and Persaud said they jumped at the opportunity to serve and have been pleasantly surprised how many peers have felt the same way and kept the club growing. “I was in my freshman year and really wanted to join a club that I’d have a passion for,” Cornileus said. “I knew I enjoyed helping people, so Junior Civitan seemed like a great fit. I wanted a chance to give back to my community,

while also forming friendships and bonds with other people. I wanted a chance to actually do something for my community and school.” And that is part of their pitch to encourage more peers to make a difference not just for their community, but for themselves. “Others can get involved by just simply helping us and joining us while we help the community,” Persaud said. “And to show support for our club, people can have their families contact us about joining the organization or also simply helping out and coming with us to our volunteering activities.” For more information, contact club adviser Michael Soapes at Michael.Soapes@ocps.net.

Heaven on a roll

DANIEL’S CHEESESTEAK HOUSE

978 E. Plant St., Winter Garden

With an increasing number of choices for West and Southwest Orange residents to get their cheesesteak fix, we decided to take a deeper look at a few of the local places serving the classic Philly sandwich.

STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR

The drive from Philadelphia to West and Southwest Orange is a little more than 1,000 miles, but for local residents who are transplants from the City of Brotherly Love — or anyone with a hankering for the sandwich with which it is widely associated — Philadelphia probably doesn’t feel quite as far away, lately. Around the area, there are an increasing number of locally-

owned restaurants that serve the cheesesteak sandwich as their signature dish. In Winter Garden, alone, there are two establishments with “cheesesteak” in their names. And it doesn’t stop there: Ocoee and MetroWest also have options for foodies in need of a little grease. We caught up with owners of four local establishments to chat about their cheesesteak philosophy and what makes their sandwich the one for you.

Steven Ryzewski

THE OWNERS: Family-owned by Frankie Liz, Harold “Mr. Harold” Masih-Das and Brian Masih-Das THE HISTORY: Daniel’s opened 21 years ago, in September 1993. After selling the business in 1996, the family returned in 2006 and picked up where

PHILLY’S BEST CHEESESTEAK

THE HISTORY: The Wolcotts began their food truck in 2012 and opened their restaurant in MetroWest earlier this year. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Jeff Wolcott is a die-hard Eagles fan who simply wanted to recreate the experience he loved. “We live and breathe it,” Wolcott said. “Beside the climate, it’s the best city in the country. People from Philly that come here — they’re floored.”

THE PHILLY-OSOPHY: “The bread — you’ve got to get your bread in the city,” Wolcott said. “Nobody makes bread like they do in Philadelphia for cheesesteaks. What sets us apart is we’re the only ones out here using ribeye. … The way we cook our vegetables is a lot different.” Philly’s Best also takes pride in making sure its customers have plenty of options. “A lot of places tell you what you’re getting on your cheesesteak — we give you choices,” Wolcott said.

It’s Easy, Fun, and Convenient to Shop

TRY THIS: “It depends on what you like — everything on the menu is good,” Wolcott said. “What you like to eat, you can make into a cheesesteak. … We just put a lot of different twists on the cheesesteak.” “The Florida” is the most popular sandwich with customers — featuring steak, peppers, fried onions and American cheese.

it left off. The family, which is from New York, happened upon cheesesteaks by accident, when a customer asked if they could do one one day back in 1993. Always happy to oblige a customer, Harold Masih-Das started doing his own version of a cheesesteak, and it was an immediate hit.

THE PHILLY-OSOPHY: Daniel’s took about six months after its first impromptu cheesesteak to settle in on a flavor. Since then, though, the local business on East Plant Street has embraced the sandwich as its signature dish and, rather than associating with the Philly cheesesteak, wants its flavorful variation to be known as the “Winter Garden Cheesesteak.” “Our flavor, I think, is unmatched — it’s a lot different kind of a flavor than you’re going to find in your traditional cheesesteak,” Frankie Liz said. Daniel’s also believes in serving its sandwiches with extra meat and extra cheese as standard practice.

THE OWNERS: Bill Sauerwine (owner) and daughter Debbie Robinson (manager) THE HISTORY: The Ocoee/ Windermere location opened 14 months ago, in 2014, and the food truck began serving nine months ago. The Philly Connection franchise is 31 years old. Sauerwine lived in Philadelphia for four decades before moving to Florida to retire in 2000. The problem? He and his family couldn’t find a cheesesteak that reminded them of home. “He started researching franchises, and he fell in love with the Philly Connection franchise,” Robinson said. “We tasted the food and we thought it was as close as we could get to the real thing — because we’re very familiar with the real thing.”

THE PHILLY-OSOPHY: “It has to start with the bread — that’s the vessel to get that sandwich into your mouth,” Robinson said. “We like the bread we serve so much because it’s still made in a bakery in New Jersey. … We use skirt steak, which is a very good quality of meat, and it helps us get that nice, thin, non-chewy consistency. You’ll also see that it’s 92% lean — so you’re not tasting all that fat.” TRY THIS: “Our recommendation is to start with ‘The Original’ — which is steak, onions and American cheese. Here, we kind of just have them start with the original and then we’ll help (a customer) go from there based on their likes. … ‘The Mushroom’ is the next most-popular.”

All four of the businesses listed have Facebook pages and are active on social media, with services such as Yelp! also having become massively important to growing a restaurant’s reputation. With Daniel’s Cheesesteak House, though, the effects of social media may be most pronounced. The longtime business seemingly went from hidden gem with a small, but loyal, following to a sensation in the Winter Garden area after it began to get rave reviews on the popular Facebook page, “Winter Garden: Rants, Raves and Reviews.” “Our local community has known us forever; they know it’s like a best-kept secret,” Frankie Liz, co-owner of Daniel’s Cheesesteak House, said. “Since social media came around, it started with one or two people and I start noticing (online) one day people were putting photos up (of our cheesesteaks),; people wanted to come in and experience it.”

WHEN IN PHILLY While cheesesteak enthusiasts may agree or disagree on certain elements of what really makes the sandwich, it seems they can all agree on one thing — when in Philadelphia, don’t refer to it as a Philly cheesesteak when ordering. After all, odds are good that the guy or gal behind the counter knows what city he or she is in.

THE PHILLY-OSOPHY: The bread and meat come to Lee’s through Philadelphia-based companies. “It makes a difference,” Lee

TRY THIS: “The first thing I do, I ask them if they like vegetables. If so, I say go for it, go for ‘The All’ — sautéed mushrooms, sautéed onions, sautéed peppers, the red crush, our secret seasoning and whatever cheese that you would like.”

THE HISTORY: The newest location of Lee’s Famous Cheesesteaks opened two weeks ago inside the Chevron gas station at the intersection of West Colonial Drive and Beulah Drive, near its former location across the street. Dee Lee was a standup comedian and radio personality in Philadelphia, and his family couldn’t find a cheesesteak in Florida that was up to par with what they had grown up on. “We couldn’t find it,” Lee said. “One day, my oldest daughter made the suggestion. She was like, ‘Dad, why don’t you open up your own place?’ We had a connection back in Philly, and we took advantage of it.”

said. “I don’t know what it is, but I know definitely that it tastes different when I go home.” Lee is quick to point out that he didn’t just wake up one day and figure that being from Philly made him qualified to have a cheesesteak restaurant. He recalls making several trips home to do research before putting some of his own twists on his recipe. “What sets us apart, definitely, is we know what it should taste like,” Lee said. “The roll, the meat, the way we season our meat. … All in all, it’s the ingredients. You’ve got to have the whiz.”

Future writers for your community newspaper could be blossoming right before your eyes as two local students achieved first place in a countywide writing competition. In celebration of families, Orange County officials recently hosted their Week of the Family Essay Contest. The contest included four divisions: high school, middle school, grades 3 to 5 and kindergarten through second grade. Gotha Middle School seventhgrader Farrah Diogene and Thornebrooke Elementary first-grader Joshua Scherer penned winning essays within the theme, “My Family Is Strong Because.” Joshua wrote about the love displayed in help he has received with school work and playing the piano. “It is important that my family helps me with homework/school because then I can get it right,” Joshua wrote. “If I get (my) homework right, then my brain will get smarter. If I get smarter, then I can do my homework by myself. If

Several other students in our area received recognition in this contest, as well. n In the division for grades 3 to 5, Thornebrooke Elementary’s Isabella Scherer placed third for her essay on how togetherness in work, time, prayer and respect strengthens her family. n Sixth-grader Madeline Rahter, from Lakeview Middle School, was an honorable mention in the middle-school division for describing how her changed view of a family bicycle ride on the West Orange Trail taught her how unity made her family strong. n Ocoee High senior Gabrielle Massersmith received an honorable mention for her high-schoollevel entry, in which she wrote about reflecting together on tragedy holding up her family.

I do all of these things, then I can have a good job when I am older.” Joshua wrote how learning piano notes could lead to playing a nice song in his home and how being loved could lead to him wanting to love others in return. Farrah admitted from the start no family ever has been perfect. “I cannot really say that my family should be awarded family of the year award,” she wrote. “But what I can say is that we care about each other and that we’ve been through a lot.” Her grandmother’s death has taught Farrah how one member can hold a family together, as well as how sticking together amid it all builds strength. “My family was like a bunch of unorganized papers sitting around,” she wrote. “My grandmother was the paper clip that held us all together. Once she died in 2011, that paper clip disappeared and we were all … different. Once my parents got separated, a lot of things changed.” Farrah and her three siblings express feelings in writing and similar practices, which has helped them and their mother to emerge fine. “So I guess my family is strong,” she wrote. “We went through a lot but we’re still here.”

More than 150 runners attended the second annual Patsy and Patti 5K Care Run/Walk. This year, the event benefited Ken Norat, the husband of teacher Dawn Norat, who has cancer. Proceeds will help the family with medical expenses. “It’s awesome,” Ken said. “I’m very humbled.” The event was put together by the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society.

“We’re so proud of them,” said Mary Ellen Murray, an event organizer. The event began last year to support Patsy Ford and Patti Cogburn, two Foundation Academy teachers who were diagnosed with breast cancer last year. They both were able to come to this year’s event. “It’s just thrilling to see so many people gather around to help others in our school family in their time of need,” said Lorne Wenzel, the headmaster of Foundation Academy.

Area business leaders head back to class for teach-in JENNIFER NESSLAR STAFF WRITER

Staff members from the West Orange Times & Observer and the Windermere Observer joined dozens of other business professionals to share about their profession Nov. 18 during the 2015 Great American Teach-In. Executive Editor Michael Eng, Senior Sports Editor Steven Ryzewski and Staff Writer Jennifer Nesslar spent the afternoon in two classrooms at Independence Elementary to teach fourth- and fifth-graders about the newspaper industry. Nesslar also demonstrated how to conduct an interview, with fourth-grader Brady Schultz and fifth-grader Rachel Marshall as interviewees.

Brady Schultz, a fourth-grade student at Independence Elementary, hopes to become a running back someday. But he doesn’t shy away from school work. He enjoys studying science and long division in school. “I like to learn about nature and how people have invented,” he said.

Simba (ID #A334258) is a handsome, 2-year-old orange tabby who would love to be the king of your pride. He’s athletic and a bit larger than the average feline. He’s outgoing, talkative and glued to the sides of his human friends. He’s currently in foster care recovering from a minor cold and will soon be ready for adoption. His foster family says he quickly acclimated to the new household and gets along well with dogs and other cats. All cat and dog adoption fees are reduced to just $12 in December as Orange County Animal Services aims to match the homeless shelter pets with loving, forever homes in time for the holidays. Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

For more information, call (407) 836-3111 or visit ocnetpets.com.

Christine Van Lue’s class at Independence Elementary is full of great minds and big dreamers.

RAVE OF THE WEEK Elle Probst on Beijing Tokyo: I have heard some good reviews about Beijing Tokyo, so I wanted to experience it myself. I took my Mini Me with me. The place is nice and clean. The staff was friendly and polite. The food was very fresh. We ordered the filet mignon and prawn hibachi lunch that included soup, rice and veggies. I added noodles. It was fantastic. The prices are very reasonable. We definitely will be back to try the sushi! Keohane remembers having the ability to see performances at five puppet theaters as a child growing up in New York, but the opportunity to witness this genre is rare in Florida. He used to manage Pinocchio’s Marionette Theater at Altamonte Mall, but since Pinocchio’s closed, he has developed a vision for a permanent, nonprofit puppet theater in Winter Garden. Keohane wants the new theater to be folksy and fun, evoking themes of the history of puppetry but also the history of Florida. He just needs to find a place for it. Until then, Keohane will be organizing performances at other venues in the community, including a Christmas show that was born from his relationship with the Henson family, who created the muppets. About 15 years ago, Jane Henson wanted to create a Nativity show, and she asked Keohane to write it. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop in New York built the puppets and a professor from the University of Central Florida built the set. “It’s the story of the birth of baby Jesus, biblically based, gospel-based,” Keohane said. “It’s basically the Bible turned into old English drama, and they were very good dramatists.” Jane funded the show’s tour to schools and churches for a few years, but then she died. In 2013, CBS broadcasted a special of an abridged version of the show, filmed at a New York cathedral. But the show hasn’t been seen since. Keohane wanted to revive the

show this year, but without continued funding from the Hensons, he has to raise money to make it happen. The first stop on the tour is in Michigan, but the show will be coming Jan. 9, 2016, to Episcopal Church of the Messiah in Winter Garden, where Suzanna Leigh is a parishioner. Leigh, now 70, is known for her roles as an actress in British movies in the 1960s and 1970s, including a starring role with Elvis Presley in the film “Paradise, Hawaiian Style.” Leigh will be playing the puppet of Elizabeth in the Nativity show. She said puppetry is a great type of performance for children because they can interact with the characters, unlike watching TV. “When you shout out to the baddie or the goodie, they actually respond to you,” Leigh said. “The child’s face is absolutely riveted.” Proceeds from the performance at Episcopal Church of the Messiah will be donated to the church’s sponsorship of a Christian family from the Middle East that was displaced by ISIS. “Culturally, (the Nativity) is a good story with a great message, and it relates today because the holy family becoming refugees at the end of the show, they have to flee for their lives,” Keohane said. Other churches that are interested in hosting a performance this season or for Christmas 2016 can contact Keohane at nativity story2015@gmail.com.

Toolbox for Composition C

omposition in photography tends to be talked about as a set of “rules” — how to place, arrange and depict the elements within the image. But it’s more helpful to think of a collection of techniques or tools to choose from when determining how best to photograph something. And don’t restrict yourself to just one of these techniques - part of the fun is mixing and matching to make the most of an image — adding impact and interest!

Rule of Thirds. Imagine dividing the image like a tic-tac-toe grid — the strongest areas of interest are then placed on the lines or where the lines cross. But here, we’ve also used a shallow depth of field to throw the background out of focus — and color contrast. Her face is lit by a lightbulb behind an umbrella — setting the camera white balance to “tungsten” is correct for her and makes the background daylight look very blue. The eye is drawn to warmer colors. Fill the frame. For more impact — make your subject fill the image — either by zooming your lens or getting closer. This composition also uses symmetry.

DAVID HAYNES

David Haynes is a photographer and cinematographer who has traveled the world capturing iconic images for organizations such as National Geographic and the BBC. His work can be seen in magazines, newspapers, and book covers. His column appears monthly.

Frame within a frame. Try using doors and windows to frame your subject within the frame of the photo. Here, the steel safety line running through the door helps to connect the foreground frame to the subject and beyond while the vertical ladder adds lines leading the eye up to the hatch in the roof. Leading Lines. Lines can add real impact to an image — the eye can’t help but be drawn along them. Using a super-wide angle lens adds perspective, drawing the eye along the length of the airplane to the horizon. Using symmetry works well for this subject — but chances are your eye is drawn initially to the open hatch in the top of the image — where the symmetry is broken.

All fourth-graders did a great job being creative while also showcasing their understanding of Florida geography. Right: Independence Elementary School congratulates its Patrol of the Month for November, Anabella Moncello from Christine Van Lue’s fifth-grade class.

Orange County Public Schools has been named a Silver Level District by the Florida Green School Network in recognition of systemic changes that promote environmental sustainability. The award was one of six presented at the seventh annual Learn Green: Florida’s Green Schools Conference, held Nov. 16 in Boynton Beach. The award recognizes environmentally friendly measures undertaken districtwide, including by schools and by the facilities, operations and transportation departments. Those efforts include switching to biodiesel fuels, building schools to green standards and schools that have reduced their carbon footprint through increased recycling and reduced energy use. Marc Clinch, facilities program director, oversees green initiatives for the Facilities Depart-

ment within the 197,000-student district, the 10th-largest in the nation. OCPS was the recipient of the 2013-14 Florida Schools District Level Award and the Florida nominee for the 2014-2015 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Award.

OCPS to host job fair Orange County Public Schools will host its next Teacher Job Fair from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Edgewater High School, 3100 Edgewater Drive, Orlando. The district is hiring for the 2015-16 school year. School administrators will be on-site to conduct interviews and extend offers for employment. Those attending the fair must register and complete a job fair profile on ocps.net; bring a teaching certificate or statement of eligibility; and bring multiple copies of his or her résumé.

Lake Whitney Elementary Lake Whitney Elementary presented 3,887 non-perishable food items to One Heart for Women and Children, a non-profit organization that connects families in need with available resources within the community. The food was collected during the school’s Annual Fall Food Drive, with fifth-graders collecting the most.

THESE OLD TIMES

THROWBACK THURSDAY DEC. 19, 1983 Three nights of damaging cold broke records in Central Florida, according to the Dec. 29, 1983, issue of The Times. Temperatures dipped below 20 degrees for a sustained period of time, and it was estimated that damages were more severe than those in the 1981 freeze. Citrus growers throughout West Orange County were cutting hard ice and assessing the damage to their crops. Area residents had a rare glimpse of northern weather, and many braved the cold temperatures to photograph frozen fountains and foliage.

Mr. J.E. Fairchild, cashier of First National Bank, is chairman of the Sixth War Loan Drive in Winter Garden. The goal for Ocoee-Winter Garden is $280,000. Davis Pharmacy is again opening The Candle Shop in the Edgewater hotel for the Christmas holidays.

We hope that the West Orange Warriors will be able to play their 1976 home baseball schedule at the city of Ocoee’s fine new ball field. By the time the 1977 season rolls around, the athletic facilities at the new high school will probably be ready, but this first year is one of transition, one that calls for cooperation and understanding by all the communities whose young people attend the new high school.

SENIOR OF THE MONTH: DEE WENNER

The Senior of the Month in the West Orange Seniors program is Dee Wenner. On Nov. 22, 1932, Dee was born to Hattie and James Felmlee in Oil City, Pennsylvania. James was a drycleaner, and Hattie was a housewife. Dee had two older brothers, James Jr. and Edward. She attended middle and high school in Oil City and then got married April 23, 1949, to Richard Wenner who was a truck driver for the Armour Meatpacking Company. Their family grew with the addition of three boys, David, Dale and Dan. They lived in Erie, Pennsylvania, and Dee worked for American Meter Company. In 1985, the family moved to Florida. She worked for Orange County’s transportation department for 10 years plus three years as a crossing guard. Later she worked as a proctor for the state of Florida and Barry University. Dee also was a volunteer at Walt Disney World for three years. Dee was traveling with her truck-driver husband when he had a heart attack; so she drove the semi back home. He died in 1993. SPORTS WOHS MAKES A DIFFERENCE Before they joined their families for turkey and other treats, the West Orange High girls soccer team was busy at work Thanksgiving morning — but not on the playing field. Members of the team volunteered their time with the Bread of Life Fellowship program, filling food boxes for those in need.

LEGACY STARTS STRONG

After winning just four games in its first two seasons, the Legacy soccer program — a boys team that also encourages girls to play in the absence of a girls program — nearly matched that win total before December began this year. The Eagles are 3-1-2 and have either won or played to a draw in their past four games. That record does not include a match on Dec. 1, after press time. Legacy will return to action at 4 p.m. Dec. 4, at Cornerstone Charter Academy.

And then there were

he faces that the West Orange Warriors see on Friday when they line up for the FHSAA Class 8A State Semifinal will be familiar. The location will be, too — at least it should be. After all, it was just around three-and-one-half months ago, on Aug. 21, when the Warriors lined up against the Osceola Kowboys in Kissimmee for a preseason contest. There will be one notable difference when the two teams take the field at Osceola High School at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 with a trip to the Orlando Citrus Bowl for the state championship on the line. This time around, someone will win and someone will lose — the preseason contest ended in a 28-28 tie.

FORSYTHE ENROLLS EARLY West Orange football’s Stone Forsythe will be trading in his high-school campus for that of the University of Florida — soon. Forsythe, a star offensive lineman for the Warriors, is on track to graduate early from West Orange in December. After committing to the Gators last spring to end his recruitment, Forsythe signed a written offer of admission to start school in Gainesville in the spring. Forsythe signed the document Nov. 25, and later that day, Gators head coach Jim McElwain tweeted out a photo of Forsythe, reading “Excited to OFFICIALLY welcome Stone Forsythe @stone_forsythe to the @GatorsFB family as a midyear enrollee. #16ATORS”

The West Orange Warriors took the field in Jacksonville with great energy ahead of their regional championship against Mandarin High. The Warriors will be on the road again in the state semifinals, this time at Osceola High.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

SPONSORED BY MARK’S FLOORS

Taylor Roukey Taylor Roukey is a striker on Foundation Academy’s girls soccer team. The sophomore has Type 1 diabetes, but she doesn’t let that hold her back. Last year, she scored eight goals and already has matched that total this year.

What position do you play and what do you like about it? I’m a striker. My favorite thing is having to run and shoot the ball in the net and be aggressive. What is a highlight from last season? We won our first home game. What are you looking forward to this season? We have a bunch of new girls, and so far, our record is better than last year. Hopefully, we’ll win more games. Any games or opponents you’re excited about this year? I was excited to play Geneva. We play them twice. We lost to them a lot, but we tied them this year. We already played them twice.

What are your goals for this season for your team? We want to make it through the first round of districts.

Warriors have something special brewing this fall

When did you start playing soccer? I started playing when I was 8. I love being outside and having other girls who I’m with every day. I love the coach and especially the girls. It’s just fun. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? I want to go to Bora Bora. I like the ocean. What’s your favorite subject and why? I like English. That’s just the easiest subject for me. I like the writing part. What are your hobbies other than soccer? I also play volleyball, and I’m also in the school praise band, so I sing in worship. How long have you been singing? For the school, this will be my second year with the band. I used to be in choir, so for a long time. What are your favorite sports to support at Foundation? Football. I love football. And then baseball, too. Everybody goes to the football games, and I’m really close with all the football players. I love the coach. The games bring everybody closer. What’s it like playing sports with Type 1 diabetes? It’s hard because I constantly have to make sure I’m doing OK. Other than that, I’m thankful that God gave me the ability to be able to play sports. — JENNIFER NESSLAR

STEVEN RYZEWSKI SIDELINE SCENE

It’s that thing you can’t quite put your finger on. So, when talking sports, most folks usually just refer to it as “it” or “that thing” or “something special.” Whatever “it” is, I’m sure this year’s West Orange Warriors have it. This team is special, and it’s beyond what the Warriors (12-1) put on the field from a pure talent standpoint. Sure, the Warriors are good talentwise — really, really good. But they were pretty darn good in 2014, and to be honest, there are many really good teams in Florida high-school football. So what separates them? There’s coaching, and then there’s luck; but there’s also just “it.” I think “it” is grit, poise, resilience … and probably a bunch of other words that basically amount to saying the ability to take a punch and get back up. That’s what the Warriors have this fall that perhaps they lacked in past years. Go all the way back to the third week of the season, Sept. 11, when West Orange beat Dr. Phillips in a thriller. That was a game that, at one point, the Panthers controlled. In a high-stakes shootout in front of a capacity crowd, though, the Warriors were led by senior quarterback Woody Barrett to a comeback victory, 41-34. In a change of pace from 2014, West Orange also lost this season — actually, the

Steven Ryzewski

Warriors quarterback Woody Barrett broke this tackle — and many others — against Mandarin Nov. 27.

Warriors got thumped by Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), 42-14, a week after beating Dr. Phillips. What they didn’t do, though, is let that loss turn into anything but a reality check that saw them win nine consecutive games since — including two victories over Apopka. In one of those victories over the Blue Darters, the monumental one that happened just two weeks ago on Nov. 20 in the state playoffs, Apopka took a lead in the fourth quarter. I started to have that “here we go again”feeling — somehow, the Blue Darters were going to find a way to steal a game on the road at West Orange. Shows you what I know. It didn’t take long for the Warriors to sprint down the field for a deciding touchdown before their defense, led by the likes of Ben Bollinger and Jeremy Samuels, held ground on a late stand to end it. Even in games West Orange has been expected to win, there is a noticeable difference in the way the Warriors sprint out to early leads and douse any hopes of an upset before the whistle has blown to end the first quarter.

ONLINE

I’m not alone in this line of thinking. After his Warriors defeated Mandarin 41-26 in the regional finals of the state tournament, head coach Bob Head told his team that there was something special about this year’s bunch — that, even when they don’t play their best football, they find ways to win and someone steps up. “They’ve got passion, and they’ve got a lot of heart,” Head told me afterward. “Their integrity refused to let (Mandarin) back in the game.” Head, of course, was right. It wasn’t the best showing for a West Orange defense that has, for the most part, been great this fall. The Warriors struggled against the Mandarin passing attack and had troubles covering kick returns. Still, every time it looked as if the Mustangs might make things interesting, the Warriors responded. There is something special about this year’s West Orange football team — and here’s hoping that something continues to be a factor for two more games.

Brand new hoops In the first year of having a program, Legacy Charter is introducing itself to the girls basketball scene in Central Florida. JENNIFER NESSLAR STAFF WRITER

For much of her high-school career at Legacy Charter, Cortnie Vees wanted a girls basketball program. As time went on, Vees, who plays other sports for the Eagles including softball and volleyball, came closer to graduation — without a basketball team. But, in her senior year, she got her wish. This winter, Legacy has rolled out its first girls basketball team. Vees is joined by several girls eager to play the game. Vees’ basketball experience is limited to playing on the street with her brothers. She, like many of the girls in the program, has never played organized basketball before. Starting from scratch with several of the girls, though, is a challenge coach Blessing Freeman is embracing. “It’s actually made me better as a coach because it’s taught me that you have to start from the

basics,” Freeman said. Before the season began, Freeman first had to recruit players. At the beginning of the school year, she started holding basketball interest meetings. She made announcements and put flyers up around the school. Sometimes, Freeman just asked girls she met if they wanted to play, even recruiting six volleyball players to join the team. Only one of the players, freshman Tya Freeman, has prior experience with organized basketball. She played for Upward Basketball, AAU and currently gets personal coaching. “I just want my team to get better; this is my first year coming to this school,” Tya Freeman said. “It’s like a family here, so I just want to see (my team) get better, since it’s their first time.” Blessing Freeman played basketball for Mississippi State. Later, she coached basketball at Southwest Baptist University, a Division II School in Missouri. In January, she moved to Florida to marry her husband. She became an assistant athletic director at Orangewood Christian School in Maitland. But she would soon return to basketball. “I heard about (Legacy) trying to start a girls program this year, and I missed coaching, so I got

with the (athletic director) here and talked it out and we went from there,” Blessing Freeman said. She now works full time at Legacy as assistant dean. “Coach is really good,” said Chloe Guy, a senior on the team. “She’s always positive, so that helps me want to go to practice.” Blessing Freeman is working to instill confidence in several players who show promise. “I’ve been teaching them hard work and 100% effort,” she said. “I think a lot of times they come out a little bit nonchalant, but I just want 100% effort and hard work from the girls.” Some players still are learning to be aggressive and get used to contact. With six volleyball players on the roster, some lack experience in contact sports.

The Eagles (1-3) beat Lake Mary Preparatory School, but lost twice to Orlando Christian Prep and Central Florida Christian Academy. The players hope to continue improving so they will be ready to face some of the teams again later this season. “Basketball has always been something I wanted to learn, but we never had the opportunity,” Guy said. Overall, Blessing Freeman thinks the team will make gains by the end of the its first season. “I know we’re still learning the rules of the game and concepts of basketball,” she said. “But I think we’ll be better than expected once we learn the game.”

Teams ready for nationals Warriors in final four CONTINUED FROM 25

CONTINUED FROM 25

organizations are sending their oldest teams, which are basically 14-and-under squads (labeled “Unlimited” in Pop Warner and categorized as an eighth-grade team by the CFYFL). Both Cardinals coach Julian Pittman, a former FSU Seminole and New Orleans Saint, and Bulldogs coach Jerry Middleton, also an assistant at Ocoee High, have a similar philosophy going into the national event against unfamiliar teams: Be ready to adapt. “We adjust to what the other team is doing,” Pittman said. “We’re going to take what they give us (because) we teach it all.” Both coaches boast offenses they feel confident can spread it out and attack through the air, or, if need be, that can pound the ball on the ground. The Cardinals are capping what has been a banner year for the entire organization: its 8-andunder team went undefeated, its 10-and-under team placed fourth at regionals, its 12-andunder team lost just once and its seventh-grade team placed second at regionals. The Cardinals 10-and-under cheerleading team also has advanced to national competition. It’s also not the first time the Cardinals have sent a team to nationals. Just two years ago, in 2013, a team coached by Pittman finished second in the nation. With that experience to his credit as a coach, Pittman said his philosophy approaching the event is to remain focused inward, on his boys.

The Kowboys (12-1) are no strangers to playing in big-time playoff games. Just a season ago, competing at the Class 7A level, they finished as state runner-up. For the Warriors (12-1), though, everything following and including last week’s appearance in the regional championship is a first for the program. West Orange commemorated its first appearance in a regional championship game by going on the road in Jacksonville and taking care of business against the host Mandarin Mustangs, to the tune of a 41-26 victory. After a 21-14 win against Apopka Nov. 20 in which the defense shined, it was senior quarterback Woody Barrett who stole the show Nov. 27 by running for four touchdowns and throwing for two more — with Eddie McDoom on the receiving end of both. “I felt like the defense had our back the whole season, so the least we could do is have their back,” Barrett said. McDoom, who caught the two TD passes to cap the Warriors’ first drive of the game and first drive of the second half, said once his QB gets going, it is going to be trouble for their opponent. “When Woody is in his zone … there’s no one stopping him,” McDoom said. Even though the West Orange defense did not have its best night against the Mustangs and pro-style quarterback Tyler Greenlee, it got big plays when it needed to — including stops on

The Ocoee Bulldogs play in the Pop Warner Super Bowl.

“It’s going to sound cliche, but what we do is we stick to what we know — and what we know is fundamentals,” Pittman said, who also gave credit to his coaching staff. For the Bulldogs, the context is a little different. Although the Bulldogs organization always has been very competitive and plays in Mid-Florida Pop Warner’s Division I — the highest tier — teams advancing beyond their conference have historically run into trouble at the regional level. “In Florida, it’s to the point where you’ll have to beat two national championship-caliber teams before you get to Disney when you talk about playing teams from Jacksonville and Miami,” Middleton said. “A lot of these kids, including me as a coach, we didn’t really know if we’d be able to get there.” In addition to picking up a

talented quarterback in Timmy Sides, who can help facilitate getting the ball to the Bulldogs’ many playmakers, Middleton attributes his team’s success so far to work ethic. “We’ve got self-motivated kids, really,” Middleton said. “They want to be the best.” The 2015 American Youth Football National Championships will begin Dec. 6 at Austin-Tindall Park in Kissimmee. A schedule will be posted soon to americanyouthfootball.com. Schedules were posted for the 2015 Pop Warner Super Bowl Nov. 30. The Bulldogs will open play against the Palm Bay Rockets at 9 a.m. Dec. 6 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

several fourth-down conversion attempts by Mandarin. “The biggest thing is bend but don’t break,” said senior Jeremy Samuels, who had an interception and several important tackles for West Orange. “When you get this far in the playoffs, the only thing that matters is that you win. Whether it’s by one point or by 40 — all that matters is that you advance. Our whole philosophy was, ‘They’re going to make plays; we’ve just got to make more.’” Afterward, coach Bob Head praised his team’s passion and integrity for refusing to let a resilient Mandarin squad back in the game. He also gave a shoutout to the Warriors’ fans and band — who traveled more than 100 miles. “We had better fans than (Mandarin) — our band was better than theirs,” Head said. “Our fans are the best in Orange County — and Florida — period.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.
