Zaxby’s opens in Ocoee The Georgia-based chicken chain opened its Ocoee location Nov. 21. DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER
Before Zaxby’s made its way to Ocoee — and before Zaxby’s even existed — it was a concept that two men from Statesboro, Georgia, dreamed up on a basketball court. The chicken joint originated in 1990, when friends Zach McLeroy and Tony Townley decided to create a fun, personable restaurant that served savory and fresh chicken. Now, almost 27 years later, Zaxby’s has more than 800 locations nationwide, and Ocoee’s is one of the newest. Located in the front of the Publix-anchored Good Homes Plaza, Zaxby’s opened on Monday, Nov. 21. The Ocoee restaurant is owned and operated by Orlando residents Boris Ochsenius Jr. and Shaun Morris, who have been with the company for 14 years. “We started as cooks and have been assistant, area and general managers,” Ochsenius said. “We worked our way up the ladder with the corporation and decided it was time to do it (open a store) on our own. Shaun’s opened 12 or 13 locations in the past two years, and I’ve opened about 25 to 30 locations in the past 14 years.” The Ocoee Zaxby’s currently has a staff of about 55. Ochsenius and Morris are still hiring for a few more part-time positions. Local Zaxby’s fans have come

About 20 children will participate in the play “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” at Mimi’s Community Theater this weekend.
A dream debut After months of planning, Mimi’s Community Theater will stage its first production, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” this weekend. BRITTANY GAINES STAFF WRITER
For several years, Lorraine Patria talked about starting up a community theater in Winter Garden. After retiring last year, she decided to turn her words into actions. “I said to my husband, ‘I think the time is right,’” Patria said. After months of planning, Patria’s new community theater will put on its first show, called “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” this weekend. The concept for the theater began to take shape during the weekend of July 4, when Patria was approached by leaders of the Winter Garden Masonic Lodge No. 165 F.&A.M. They had learned of her project through her husband, who has been a member of the lodge for 16 years, and offered the use their building for all the community theater’s needs. Patria immediately accepted and named the new theater

Mimi’s Community Theater. “My grandkids call me Mimi,” Patria said. “So everybody will think their grandmother owns this theater, and it sounded very wholesome.” Patria said she was surprised how quickly things came together once a plan was put into motion. “It came together almost like nothing,” she said. Over the last several weeks and months, Patria has gone through hours of auditions and rehearsals for this weekend’s show. “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” tells the story of a church that is putting on a Christmas pageant and all the frustrations and drama that it endures for the show to go on. “I’m hoping we will get it so perfect that people will have a little tear,” Patria said. “What I want people to know is the story of baby Jesus.” Having never worked with children before, Patria said this first play — featuring a cast of nearly 20 children — is proving to

be a challenge, albeit a good one. “It’s all about the kids,” Patria said. “That’s what I want.” And with opening night on Friday, the kids are excited to get their first taste of the spotlight. “It sounded like fun, like something I would like,” 10-year-old Hannah Brewer said of the production. “And my mom always says that I’m really dramatic.” One of the most interesting things about “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” is that it’s a play about a play, said Jackson Crawley, 14. Following the Christmas production, Patria plans to have a play at Mimi’s Community Theater every few months, with the next play scheduled for midFebruary. And the genre of each play will almost always vary, Patria said, from children’s plays to musicals. Her goal for the theater is to make it self-sufficient. “Ten years from now, I want the community theater to still be going,” she said. Contact Brittany Gaines at bgaines@orangeobserver.com.

Ochsenius said there were 130 people lined up on grand-opening day, waiting to collect fanatic packs — a promotion that rewards the first 100 fans in line with one free meal every week for a year. Ochsensius said the next step is to respond by getting involved in and giving back to the community that has been so welcoming. “I’m working with corporate to not just go into an area but to become part of what that area is,” he said. “I’m hoping we get to a point where we can settle and do things out of these four walls. expire, and their package price rises to the regular monthly price of those services,” Durkin said. Durkin also added the only situation in which a customer might have to pay an installation fee is if they sign up for additional services when choosing a new Spectrum package, emphasizing that a package that retains similar services shouldn’t have any installation fees. Furthermore, existing Bright House customers have the option to continue with their current subscription or promotional package, he said. However Heather Eldridge Jones, a previous Bright House customer who switched to Spectrum, felt forced to change her plan after learning her promotional deal was no longer offered and had increased by $60. “I’m just disappointed they have a monopoly,” Pine said. “Things would be better for everyone if (people) were given a choice.”

but common frustration are about the hourslong waits to speak to a customer service representative on the phone. Spectrum company spokesman Joe Durkin explained the company currently is experiencing a high call volume. “There has been incredible response to the launch of Spectrum packages in Florida that has resulted in higher call volume from potential and existing customers looking for information,” Durkin said. “We’re working on adding capacity to handle this spike in call volume.” Other complaints include sudden bill increases, different quoted prices dependent on residence, additional installation and connection fees for previous Bright House customers and letters detailing introductory offer rates that are only available for new Spectrum customers. The end result has been a slew of irritated residents who have either canceled their services or are waiting for their contract to expire to subscribe to another cable or Internet service provider. Christopher Pine, a resident who recently finished building a new house off Avalon Road, is a new Spectrum customer. He chose Spectrum because he felt he had no other options. Inadvertently, he learned via a miscommunication with a customer representative that residents in Winter Haven and Winter Garden — according to the representative — are charged different prices for the same internet speed.
“So I asked how much 60 mbps would cost, and she said, ‘Same, $42 and whatever the change was,’” Pine said. “I questioned why they would charge one customer in Winter Haven the same price in Winter Garden for two very different speeds. She said that those are the prices, and she couldn’t change that.” However, Durkin stated Spectrum features nationally uniform pricing with no contracts. But the confusion does not stop there. Several residents, such as Winter Garden resident Venetia Spencer, who received introductory offer letters were dismayed when informed they were not eligible for the lower offers because they are existing Bright House customers. “I understand the concept of running specials for new customers,” said Spencer, who has been a Bright House customer for 20 years, “However, when a longtime existing customer is paying four times the new customer rate, it is unacceptable.” Multiple customers since the merger also cited unexpected increases for their monthly rates, ranging from $10 to $25. The sudden increase upset Carol Spaldi and Diane Mattar, who both noticed their monthly bills increase by $10. Durkin said anyone experiencing a situation involving a bill increase should not blame it on the merger, because those are not related. “Literally every day of the week, many customers’ promotions

ing what it hopes to turn into an annual event, and Tom Hyatt, Armstrong’s director of sales and marketing, hopes the drive will help Matthew’s Hope in its mission. “We’re pretty excited,” Hyatt said. “We’ve had a pretty good turnout with our own employees. One of the first donations was through a companywide push of all our employees and partners — we have about 110 employees in the Winter Garden area ... so we have a good opportunity to collect with the drive for Matthew’s Hope to go out and bless people.” There are three drop-off locations for anyone wishing to donate: Armstrong Air and Heating, Matthew’s Hope and the Ocoee Taco Company. It’s been a slow start in terms of donations from local residents, but Hyatt is optimistic donations will pick up when the cooler weather comes to the area this weekend. “We’re just trying to get people to think about those in need and how we can give back to our neighbors,” Hyatt said. The idea for the drive was developed by Hyatt and Paul Richards, the company president. Hyatt suggested those who cannot donate clothing help support Matthew’s Hope by volunteering a few hours of their time or donating food to the pantry.

“We execute ideas that can tie us to the community and help us fill the needs of the community,” Hyatt said. “And every year, when it starts to get very cold, you can drive down the streets of Orlando and see that people need clothing, you know, people need protective wear. And with that being said, we wanted to make sure that this year we would do our part to make sure that everybody stays warm.” Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com.

OCOEE 700 block of South Bluford Avenue. At 5 a.m., an officer responded to a white SUV that had crossed an intersection and stopped on a median. The car still had the engine running, and the lights were on. The officer banged on the driver’s window for about 30 seconds to awaken the driver, who was slumped over the steering wheel, asleep. The male driver was unable to stand without leaning and spoke with a slur. A search produced two cellphones, several pieces of aluminum foil, a short piece of straw, four small bags of a cream-colored powder, a glass bottle with Xanax and a piece of a plastic pen.

The Oakland Police Department is currently investigating a series of recent thefts dating from the end of October to the last week of November. The thefts were from the mailbox and the water department drop box located at the town center circle on Tubb Street by Oakland Town Hall. Anyone who has used these two receptacles to mail bills, and have been notified their bills were not received, may be a victim of this scheme. The department urges residents who may be a victim of check or money-order fraud that relates to these drop boxes to contact Detective Brandon McDonnell, (407) 656-9797. Oakland officials believe the thefts from these two receptacles have ceased and have stated they have identified the culprits. The department is now collaborating with the Winter Garden Police Department and U.S. Postal Inspection Service in this case.

12980 block of West Colonial Drive. At about 6 p.m., a store employee at the Chevron gas station had witnessed a male in a black hoodie steal two Budweiser beer cans, valued at $2.79 each, and run out the store. The employee ran after the thief, and a second store employee, located at the back of the store taking a smoke break, was notified of the situation. The employee on break then began to give chase and started wrestling with the beer thief. At this point, the first store employee called Winter Garden police for help. During the scuffle, the beer thief, who was under 21, bit the store employee twice: once on his nipple and a second time on his mid-bicep. The beer thief was eventually secured and arrested, before purposefully hitting his head against a police car partition repeatedly.

The Independence community is hosting a Light the Night 5K to help beloved Bridgewater Middle teacher Jan Leisher beat cancer. DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER
Ask any student who has had Jan Leisher as a teacher what they think of her, and they’ll likely respond with “inspiring” or “impactful.” Leisher, a Winter Garden resident and both a U.S. history and gifted-program teacher, has taught at various schools in the West Orange County area for 20 years — from Gotha Middle to Bridgewater Middle, where she is currently — and has been impacting the lives of students in the Gotha, Windermere and West Orange areas for as long. But now, it’s her students’ turn to rally around her. Leishers has dealt with cancer throughout most of her adult life. It began with breast cancer in 1989, which she beat. However, it came back in 2001, and she went through multiple surgeries, including a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. Most recently, Leisher told her students in October she is battling stage 4 breast cancer, which

has metastasized to her bones. She first realized something was wrong with her hip while on a trip to Virginia in October with her eighth-grade students. A later MRI revealed the bone cancer. “In the past month, I have had intensive radiation to kill the cancer in my hip and pelvis,” Leisher said. “I am also recovering from multiple fractures that are a byproduct of the cancer. I have started systemic chemotherapy which will probably last six months or so. My oncologist says I have a ‘good’ kind of cancer, and he is a former gifted student, just like my students, so I’m going to believe him.” When she got the news that the cancer had metastasized, she first told her family but then gathered her students together to tell them all at once. Cancer conversations were nothing new to them: Leisher is open and candid about her treatments. “I wanted them to know that facing challenges is part of living, and I wanted them to know that they are part of other people’s challenges,” Leisher said. “Our classroom is a family, too.” When word of her diagnosis spread, the staff and students — both current and former — felt they had to do something to help. It was fellow Bridgewater teacher Brian Boylan, a sixthgrade science teacher and the track coach, who came up with the idea of putting together a 5K to benefit Leisher and help ease her medical bills. Along with parents and community members, the Dec. 14 Light the Night 5K came to fruition. “We’re trying to involve as many people from the community as possible, because she has so many current and former students who were wanting to participate,” Boylan said. “It’ll be a bunch of people who are in support of Mrs. Leisher, to show our appreciation for everything she’s done and to support the cause (cancer). of people who have fought cancer or are battling it now.” The community event costs $20 to participate, and the first 150 who register will receive a glow-in-the-dark T-shirt. Starting at the Independence clock tower and winding through the community’s fitness trail, participants will don the shirts and glow necklaces as they run in support of Leisher. Members of the school’s brass band and choral group will perform, and the race ends with food trucks. In a Relay for Life style, the course will be lit with 400 luminary bags. All the while, participants can bid at the silent auction for items such as a two-night hotel stay, Disney World tickets and SeaWorld tickets. Every bit of the proceeds goes directly to Leisher to help with her medical bills. And while her students run to cheer her on, she’ll be waiting at the finish line to cheer for them. “I have always been humbled and blessed by the personal and professional support of my parents and past students,” she said. “A week of my life has never gone by without hearing from old students.” Contact Danielle Hendrix at dhendrix@orangeobserver.com.

tions.” To prepare for the role, the girls have attended numerous rehearsals to make sure they know each and every step of the famous ballet. “There are lots of foot movements,” Cassady said. Are they nervous? “Definitely!” both girls said at the same time, laughing. When the nerves start to kick in, they both said they take a minute to zone out and take their mind off the pressure and hundreds of pairs of eyes watching in the audience. “I go through Clara’s different faces of acting (in my head),” Cassady said. Despite their nerves, neither girl is a stranger to the dance studio. Peralta began dancing when she was 8 and Cassady when she was 3. Both have been dancing with the Orlando Ballet for several years. Both girls will be dancing as Clara on Sunday. Cassady will perform during the 1 p.m. show, and Peralta will perform during the 6:30 p.m. show. The girls said they are most looking forward to the battle scene between the soldiers and mice. “It’s so intense,” Cassady said. “It’s the coolest part.” And their favorite costume? Clara’s nightgown. It’s so pretty and flow-y, they both said. Now that they’ve both danced as Clara, they have their sights set on new goals: Dancing as the Sugar Plum Fairy or the Snow Queen.

Although Peralta was given the role immediately, Cassady initially was assigned to be an understudy for the role of Clara. But that didn’t last long. “I was so excited,” Cassady said about finding out she would be dancing as Clara in the show. Although dancing as Clara is a new experience for both girls, they have danced in “The Nutcracker” for many years. “It’s a tradition,” Cassady said about dancing in the Christmas classic. “You never want to skip it.” In previous shows, they performed as mice, soldiers, Chinese dancers, Arabian dancers and friends at the Christmas party. But none of these roles compares to the challenge of being Clara. “In the whole show, you have to do everything on pointe,” Peralta said, referring to the ballet technique of dancing on your toes. And instead of being on stage for only a few minutes in a smaller role, the girls will spend nearly the entire show in the spotlight — and some of the scenes completely on their own. “There so much acting going on onstage,” Cassady said. “You’re doing different stages of emo-

EVELYN LOUISE DYER DIED NOV. 25, 2016
On Friday night, Nov. 25, 2016, our mother, Evelyn Louise Dyer, made her final flight to her heavenly home. As her great-grandson, JD, observed when told about her passing, “That means she is through the pearly gates and in a mansion!” Our mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, lived a long and fruitful life. She was 86 years old at the time of her passing. She was born in Black, Alabama (Geneva County), Feb. 26, 1930, the ninth child of Jimmy and Della Adams. She was born at home with a mid-wife attending, about two months premature. Her first crib was a shoebox. From the moment of her birth, it was obvious that she would be a stubborn survivor. Her earliest years were the experience of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl that left many in south Alabama hungry and unemployed. When we (her children) would ask her about Alabama her reply was always, “All I remember about Alabama is being hungry.” At the age of 6, her family moved to Winter Garden, Florida. There she grew up attending Tildenville Elementary and Lakeview High School, finishing the eighth grade. At the age of 15, she met and married our dad, JD Dyer. At the age of 17 she gave birth to her first child, Glenda. Married to a farm laborer,

she was a housewife and mother. And, being married to a farm laborer meant following the work, i.e. moving many times in the early years of her marriage until 1959. At that time, they were finally able to buy a small house in Ocoee, where she would raise her seven children and never have to move again. Having put her trust in Jesus Christ as her Savior in 1948, Mom had longed to be part of a Biblebelieving church but was never in one place long enough. So, when she settled in Ocoee she soon visited and joined the First Baptist Church of Ocoee on Ohio Street. There, she would faithfully serve her Lord and Savior for literally the rest of her life. For 56 years, she helped and served in many ways, giving herself to the service of her Savior through her local church. Her service most remembered will be her years as a Sunday School teacher and later as a singer of specials in the church services. In everything she did, she taught us faithfulness. If her life could be summed up in one, short threeword sentence, it would be: She was faithful. Mom was faithful to her husband and faithful to her family. Never once did her husband or any one of her children need to worry about where she was or what she was doing. Our meals were always there. Our clothes were always clean. Not once did we come home from school to find our Mom not there. Not once did we cry out in the night that she did not answer and come to our aid. Not once did she put her needs ahead of ours. No matter how difficult the circumstance, she was there for us. And, she was faithful to her God, her Savior and her church. Mom’s life was evidence of the truth of Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Her faith completely rested in her Lord Jesus Christ, and she firmly believed there is no other way to God or heaven, for Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” And, she loved what her Savior loved, His church: Ephesians 5:25, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” Not once in growing up did we ever need to ask our Mom if we were going to church. It was a given. If the doors were open she was there with all her brood. She was faithful. Now she is in heaven, through

While we will miss her sorely and mourn for ourselves, we do not mourn for her. We celebrate her life and all that she taught us through word and example. Two teams from the West Orange Bobcats youth football organization will be competing for national championships in their respective age groups Dec. 15-18 in Davenport. The Bobcats’ 14U and 8U teams lost one game, combined, in the regular season and will get a chance to show what they can do at the 2016 AAU Tackle Football League Based Nationals. The 8U team, coached by Danny Glover, went undefeated in the regular season (8-0) before eventually losing in the Florida Youth Football and Cheer League Playoffs, though they still qualified for Nationals. “We play for each other — there are a lot of kids that are new to (football), and they believe in each other and the next person that’s out on the field,” Glover said of his team. “They did a really good job of just being able to work together on the field.” The 14U team, coached by Steve Stutsman, went 7-1 during the regular season and lost in the second round of the playoffs to Apopka, making for a combined record of 8-2 so far this season. “We never quit — both our losses came down to the final second,” Stutsman said. “It’s

state championships in softball and its appearances in the Final Four for baseball. Then, there’s the school’s sole appearance in a state championship game for boys basketball in 1997. The Eagles lost that game, and the program made just two brief playoff appearances over the next 18 years. Fortunately, things have changed following the hiring of its latest coach, Jonathan McClintock, who joined the
Eagles in 2014. McClintock came to campus with the intention of reinvigorating the program, but even he could not have imagined how quickly it has happened. The Eagles have made the state playoffs in each of his first two seasons and are gearing up for a third run as the winter season begins. “I was blessed to meet (assistant) coach Andrew (Gustafson), and I was blessed to have an SEE EAGLES PAGE 14

Dan Elbert In addition to having completed several marathons (including the Boston Marathon, twice) and a 50-mile race, Dan Elbert of the Winter Garden Runners is well known in the running community for encouraging others and pushing his limits.
How long ago did you get into running as part of your fitness routine? I did my first marathon in 2000, and that was my first race. What was the reasoning to jump right in and run a marathon? I was a gym rat, and I just wanted to do something else. It was a bet that got me into running — a guy said I couldn’t run a marathon faster than he did, so I said, “Yes, I can.” Were you surprised by the level of training required to successfully run a marathon? Yes — the training is the hardest part. As someone with more of a strength-training background, were you surprised to enjoy running as much

as you did? I was. The weightlifting got to be monotonous after a while. You can run anywhere — it’s something different, and it’s a stress reliever. How long have you been involved with the Winter Garden Runners? It’s probably been four or five years that I’ve been part of the Runners. The club has been great — all of them are great people and it’s fun meeting up with them. What’s the best bit of advice that you’ve gotten pertaining to run? Have fun with it. You can take it seriously, but don’t take it too seriously where you ruin it. What are your favorite foodie-spots in West Orange? influx of several kids who really helped,” McClintock said. “That was super important to have some guys who can play.” Of course, as more players begin to transfer in and choose CFCA, sometimes spurning more traditional powerhouses in the area, there’s another theory about the Eagles’ recent success. And it may have something to do with the guy walking the sideline. “I’ve seen a lot of basketball, and I’ve seen a lot of good high school coaches and teams,” said CFCA Athletic Director Kyle Wills. “The guy that we have heading up our team right now, Jonathan, is incredible.” The Eagles took in five new players this school year, headlined by Troy University signee De’Lazarus Keys, a transfer from perennial powerhouse Orlando Christian Prep. Also included among the newcomers are Danny Rivera, Sebastian Brown, Kendrick Brown and Zen Goodridge. McClintock attributes the growing interest in the program
“I’ve seen a lot of basketball, and I’ve seen a lot of good high school coaches and teams. The guy that we have heading up our team right now, Jonathan, is incredible.” — CFCA Athletic Director Kyle Wills
to its guiding philosophy. “I would hope one of the overriding themes of our program is our guys don’t really care about who gets what shot or how many — it’s all about the results on the scoreboard,” McClintock said. “We try to invest in our kids, from the moment we meet them throughout the process.” It’s an easy thing to say, but by all accounts, it is something that is carried through by McClintock and his staff — Gustafson and Jerred Treacy. All are dedicated to following through with their players on the court, academically and spiritually. “By the time when we get to basketball time, when we have to critique them and point out areas of their game that aren’t good, they know our heart toward them by then,” McClintock says. “They know that behind every critique — or even behind discipline — is a heart that cares for their greatest good.” The newcomers, combined with standout junior guard Dante Treacy and a few other talented returners, have CFCA considered a legitimate statetitle contender in Class 2A. Over Thanksgiving break, the Eagles (3-2) were invited to participate in their first Metro vs. Florida Challenge, where they lost an exciting, hard-fought game to Wekiva High Nov. 25 — a Class 9A program — 59-57. Although disappointed with the result, even though it came against an elite opponent, just being invited suggests the program is on the right track. “Absolutely it’s valuable,” Wills said. “For such a small school to get invited to these things and being placed in the mix with bigger schools, it’s been excellent for us and excellent for the kids to see even
being at a small school like ours, you can still get notoriety.” The loss to the Mustangs, who are 3-1 at the time of publication, was significant for another reason: The Eagles were down one of their top players. Keys injured his hand in a game earlier that week, and the entire team stepped up in his absence, with Treacy pouring in a gamehigh 34 points. “That was some surprise adversity that we had to deal with, and the kids really focused up and took every detail of the game plan with the highest seriousness,” McClintock said. “The kids passed those tests really, really well, and it gives you a glimpse of what our group can be like.” If the group can reach its potential, and if that potential involves a possible trip to Lakeland for the FHSAA Final Four, it could mean a lot for the small campus in east Ocoee. “It goes beyond winning a championship — it’s building family and camaraderie within the student body,” said Dr. Robert Gilliland, the school’s headmaster. “We have a different family-feeling around our school than other schools do.” McClintock, who brings a detailed and disciplined approach to the game that is reflected in the way his team plays, isn’t thinking that far ahead yet. What he will say, though, is that this team has plenty of potential. “If this group plays extremely hard and humbly, and they approach the game the right way, they’re really hard to beat,” McClintock said. But, he added, “We are far, far from a finished product.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

kind of been the whole theme for the season: teamwork and never quit.” Both teams will face stiff challenges against some of the best teams from around the country. Glover said it will be important for his boys to focus on what they can control.
“We’re going to have to come out the same — just being able to play our game and not worry about who we are facing,” Glover said. Stutsman said his team will have to continue to avoid mistakes — as it did during the reg-
ular season — at the national competition, which features five-minute quarters. “We do a multitude of things and give a lot of different looks on offense, and on defense, we fly to the ball,” Stutsman said. “You can’t have mistakes.”
