Mother seeks donations for WOHS grad’s funeral ZAK KERR STAFF WRITER CLERMONT Aaron
Zacharias’s mother, Neena, said he was an avid fan of “The Fast & the Furious” movie franchise, “Forza Motorsport” video games and cars in general. In a tragic turn of events reported by Florida Highway Patrol officials, it was a car that struck and killed Aaron, a 26-year-old West Orange High alumnus, at about 11:30 p.m. Dec. 6 on Lakeshore Drive at

Preston Cove Road in Clermont, where he was crossing the street outside the crosswalk. FHP personnel are still searching for that driver, who did not stop after the crash. Small black pieces of a putty used in car work were at the scene, so the
car might have undergone recent body work. Aaron had been training to become a mixed-martial-arts fighter while living with Neena in Clermont, she said. “He was really trying to work on that and basically into his own little fitness thing,” she said. The Zachariases had lived in Winter Garden since 1999 or 2000 before more recently moving to Clermont, Neena said. While in high school, Aaron enjoyed being in a car club with his friends. After he graduated in 2007, he had sought a business degree at Everest but did not complete the program, Neena said.

planned to hold hundreds of tenants. Evans said neighborhood shops with regular pedestrian and bicycle access have become a trend to serve small communities. Boyd also noted development should trigger an expansion of Seidel Road to four lanes soon, perhaps in six months. Residents said they would like that area to remain less trafficked and as rural as possible, citing a desire to live out in the country. They asked to be shown the need for development to progress that far south and said they would have a better idea of their opinions on the project once drawings emerge. WHAT’S NEXT After the Dec. 9 Community Meeting, the Island Reef proposal now will move forward with a series of hearings at the Orange County Commission. Orange County staff hosted a preliminary community meeting Dec. 9 at Bridgwater Middle School for a project District 1 Orange County Commissioner S. Scott Boyd called “beyond Horizon West.” With development moving in Village I — the finish line for Horizon West — Evans Engineering President David Evans is looking even farther south to develop 23.94 gross acres of commercial and residential property, specifically at the southeast corner of Hartzog and Avalon roads. In a project called Island Reef, Evans is starting with a request to amend the Future Land Use from commercial to a mix of commercial and low-medium-density residential. Evans said he would plan for up to 220 single-family units in the style of town homes and up to 20,000 square feet of retail space. One resident who lives across the street from the proposal site, near Lake Gifford, said he was pleased with the lower height of this proposal — a maximum of 35 feet — as opposed to a taller property nearby, which he said could have a direct view into his home. That resident wondered where the entrances to the property would be, to which Evans replied they would be as far from the intersection as possible. Multiple residents questioned the need for commercial space at that intersection given so few residents, but county staff alluded to nearby parcels with developments
His other favorite video game series was “Call of Duty,” and he particularly enjoyed martial arts movies, she said. “He liked all the karate movies, ‘The Matrix,’ he was into all the ‘Fast & Furious,’ all the Batman and Superman movies,” Neena said. Beyond all else, Aaron was a spiritual soul who loved God, she said. “He knew that Bible inside and out, and he really had a love for God and a love for life and a love for everybody,” Neena said. “He loved everybody.”
his head, giving thanks to God, following the Oakland Town Commission’s vote Dec. 8 to allow his church, Iglesia Pentecostal de Winter Garden, to operate in the town. He has represented the church in its request for a special exception for a site at 421 E. Oakland Ave., which previously was used as a commercial site. West Orange Window and Pounds Mower & Supply were the two most recent tenants. The site is surrounded by residential zoning to the north and east, commercial to the west and a charter school to the south. It is situated in Oakland’s Gateway Corridor Overlay district, which is subject to stricter regulations. The church has been in Winter Garden for 14 years and was seeking a larger space. The vacant building Rodriguez and Pastor Ronaldo Perez were seeking is 6,782 square feet on 1.22 acres. The church has 84 members. “The pastor’s vision is one service for members, and then they go have dinner and spend time with their families,” Rodriguez said. “There will be no big signage or bells or huge cross. … We want people to support us here as the first Spanish church in Oakland.” Sunday services are from 2 to 4 p.m., and Bible study is held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Rodriguez said, so there will not be a great deal of traffic throughout the week. He said the church does not intend to hold multiple activities throughout the week or large events that would interrupt the neighborhood, and there are no plans for a daycare or preschool
that would bring added traffic and noise. “Your intent is so impressive; we think you will be an asset to the community,” Vice Mayor Mike Satterfield told Rodriguez. With the approval came 11 conditions, including bringing several accessory structures on the lot up to code and repairing the on-site drainage facilities. Rodriguez thanked town staff for its guidance during this process. He and the church had gone before the commission last month attempting to get approval for another piece of property on Tubb Street, but together the elected officials and church representatives decided that space wasn’t large enough to accommodate the congregation and had too many other issues. Oakland resident Tom Shuman said he was happy to see the church move into town. “Churches have a way of letting the love of Jesus show through,” he said, adding that he thought the location was perfect for a church. “This was an old lumber yard; Jesus was a carpenter.” PLAYGROUND COVER
Rainy days and the scorching sun have made physical education classes difficult for years at Oakland Avenue Charter School, but those weather conditions won’t be an issue now that the commission has agreed to spend $55,845 from the school’s reserves to purchase a fabric shade structure from Park Forms. Officials are considering buying a dark-blue shade, which has a 93% coverage from the sun’s UV rays. The structure, measuring 60 feet by 90 feet with a height of 12 feet, is also rated for 90-mph winds but can be dismantled in the event of a hurricane. A full-sized, lobby print of an Australian variant “The Empire Strikes Back” poster. When and where are you seeing it for the first time? I’ll be seeing it on the Friday of opening weekend at the AMC Dolby Atmos theater in Disney Springs.

What makes you the biggest fan in West Orange County? Besides being a fervent admirer of the original films, their merits directly inspired me to cultivate a business idea around movies with a friend — a social network for movie-lovers called flick-
1. Padmé Amidala was a young Senator and former queen of which small planet?
“I’d take Luke, Lando, R2-D2 and C-3PO — but I’d switch Threepio off if he got too chatty.”
What makes Star Wars so popular? It’s the combination of a vast
world of characters, locales and George Lucas’s adaptation of Joseph Campbell’s monomyth with Lucas’s business savvy and merchandising foresight that popularized the films across generations and permeated pop culture. Did Han Solo shoot first? Of course he did. Even if Lucas claims otherwise, at that point in the story, Solo is a smuggler for gangsters. He’s going to protect himself. It’s also essential to the arc of his character to start as the ultimate rogue to then end up as the reluctant hero. On which planet would you most like to live? Pre-war Naboo seems quite nice.

In “The Empire Strikes Back,” Captain Solo evades Imperial capture by flying into an asteroid field. According to C-3PO, what were the odds of Solo’s success in this daring maneuver? 4. George Lucas directed only three of the Star Wars films. TRUE or FALSE? 5. In “Revenge of the Sith,” what were Anakin Skywalker’s final words to his former friend and Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi? 6. Tim and Evan Bernardi, Ocoee For Ocoee residents Tim and Evan Bernardi, Star Wars is a legacy to be passed down through the generations. Tim had just finished eighth grade when the first film was released in 1977. Evan was born in 1993, during the production hiatus, but his dad showed him the early movies at a young age, and he was mesmerized. “To be able to share it with my son and to see him get so enthusiastic about it, that was really something,” Tim said. “We’re living proof of the fact that this is a cross-generational cultural phenomenon.” Who are your favorite and least-favorite characters? Evan: I’d say Qui-Gon was a good character because it was kind of his own mindset. He
basically follows his own path. My least favorite character of all time — it is Jar Jar. Tim: I like Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of Obi-Wan. My least favorite, I’m sorry but I’m gonna have to say it —Hayden Christensen’s portrayal of Anakin Skywalker. He was whiny. Which of the six feature films is your favorite? Evan: “Empire Strikes Back.” It opens with this amazing battle and leads you right into the action. Have you met any of the actors? Evan: I did see Peter Mayhew at MegaCon a few years ago, but I didn’t speak to him. Did Han shoot first? Tim: George Lucas said the
Bill Carter / bcarter@OrangeObserver.com
answer was “no,” because he framed Han Solo as being a John Wayne-like character, and John Wayne never shot first. On which planet would you most like to live? Evan: Coruscant would be my favorite one. I love how the whole planet is just one big city. Tim: Naboo. And if I had to pick one for (Evan) to live on, it would be Alderaan. Assemble your dream “Star Wars” squad. Evan: The clone trooper squad from “Episode III” that carried out Order 66 because hey, they took out every Jedi in no time flat. Tim: Han, Chewie, Obi-Wan, R2. I win.
Did Han shoot first? “No. I played it frame by frame. Greedo shot first.” — Evan Bernardi, Ocoee
Don Bedwell, Ocoee Don Bedwell has been counting the days until the newest “Star Wars” film is out on the big screen. Now 48, he has introduced his two sons to his beloved “friends” Luke, Han, Leia, Chewbacca and Yoda. What makes you the biggest fan in West Orange County? The first time I saw “Star Wars” was the summer of 1977; I was 10. Immediately, I was hooked. The movie just spoke to me as a young man. I played with the toys. I read the books. I played like I was Han Solo. As a grown-up, I still have the toys, but they are shared with my sons. Who is your least favorite character? Whiny Anakin Skywalker from “Attack of the Clones.” I mean, here’s the guy who will one day be Darth Vader, whining about sand and “how it gets everywhere.” I guess Luke gets his whining from Anakin. Which of the six feature films is your favorite? “Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.” While everyone else was asking, “Who shot J.R.?” I was asking, “Is Darth Vader really Luke’s father?” Have you met any of the actors? I’ve met a lot of the stars: Kenny
Baker, Orli Shoshan, Ray Park, Peter Mayhew, Andy Secombe (the voice of Watto) and many others. I met David Prowse (Darth Vader body actor) while I was working at Universal Studios. Partied with Daniel Logan. My favorite would have to be Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian). When did you buy your tickets for “The Force Awakens”? My wife gave them to me as our wedding anniversary gift the day they went on sale. What makes “Star Wars” so popular? There are so many things to choose from that make “Star Wars” popular. The simple adventure of traveling through space to different worlds with strange giant creatures. The mythos of The Force and the struggle between the Dark Side and the Light Side. The endless stories in the (nowbanned) Expanded Universe. The archetype characters we all know and identify. The subtle humor of the characters, even when they are in great peril.
“I was on my way to Star Wars Celebration in Orlando a couple years ago, dressed in my Jedi costume, when I was pulled over for speeding. I’m not sure what the officer thought of me, but I don’t think he appreciated the ‘Jedi mind trick’ I tried on him so that he wouldn’t give me a ticket.” — Don Bedwell, Ocoee

Wawa, Culver’s pass first hurdle PETER M. GORDON CONTRIBUTING WRITER WINTER GARDEN City commis-
sioners approved unanimously the first reading of an ordinance to rezone the northwest corner of West Colonial Drive and Dillard Street to Planned Commercial Development. The developer razed the gas station and blighted motel that had been on the property and plans to build a Wawa, a Wendy’s and a Culver’s restaurant. Despite approval, Mayor John Rees said he wasn’t thrilled with the plan as presented by Community Development Manager Steve Pash. “We were hoping for something a little more upscale,” he said. “I’m less than impressed.” Commissioner Kent Makin echoed Rees’ sentiment and said he hoped a new hotel would be a part of the plan for the lot. “We’ve been working hard for a hotel since day one,” City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said. The three stores announced will not fill the entire property, and discussions are continuing with the developer to see if an 80- to 100-room hotel could be added in the future. ROAD IMPROVEMENTS
Bollhoefer outlined the construction schedule for planned improvements to three of the
city’s most heavily traveled intersections: Avalon and Marsh roads, Avalon and Tilden roads, and State Road 429/State Road 535/Stoneybrook West Parkway. Utility relocation, curbing and temporary signal installation are underway this month at Avalon and Marsh roads. That part of the work should be completed by mid-January. Mast-arm installation, sidewalk construction, sod, pavement and striping work will start in May 2016 with completion scheduled for late July 2016. Preliminary construction at Avalon and Tilden roads will start in early February 2016, with full construction commencing in early March 2016. The project should be completed in December 2016. Winter Garden will pay for additional improvements to the 429/535/Stoneybrook West Parkway intersection, including additional turn lanes, and expressway on and off ramps, to improve traffic through at this busy intersection. The city plans to start construction in March 2016 and finish by October 2016. The currently city is conducting a traffic study of the intersection and its feeder roads. BILLBOARD ORDINANCE
Commissioners also approved the second reading of an ordinance to create a more restrictive special exception process to review bill-
boards on city property. After the unanimous vote, commissioners approved an agreement with Clear Channel Outdoor to remove two billboards at 35 S. Dillard St. in exchange for permission to build a new digital billboard at 13394 E. Colonial Drive. The new billboard will comply with Winter Garden’s billboard restrictions and should be no brighter than the digital billboards erected along the State Road 408. LIGHT SHOW
The City Hall Light Show proved so popular that the city has added shows on the following nights: Friday, Dec. 18; Saturday Dec. 19; Sunday, Dec. 20; and Wednesday, Dec. 23. All shows will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at City Hall, 300 W. Plant St. WATER LINES
After eight-and-one-half years of negotiation with the city of Orlando and Orange County, City Attorney Kurt Ardaman said Winter Garden reached an agreement to buy the reclaimed water main that serves the southwest part of the city. The line is owned by Conserv II, an organization owned 50% by Orange County and 50% by Orlando. Winter Garden took control of the line to relocate it to accommodate the improvements to the Avalon/Tilden intersection and the development needs of the growing southwest area.
“We were hoping for something a little more upscale. I’m less than impressed.” Mayor John Rees

Police stop package pirates Several alert residents, including Enclave at Berkshire Park resident Jason Parker, helped catch the suspects. ZAK KERR STAFF WRITER HORIZON WEST
A porch-piracy crime spree ended in the arrest of four suspects charged with driving around and swiping packages from stoops in several neighborhoods in Windermere and Horizon West. According to Orange County Sheriff’s Office reports, deputies responded shortly after 2 p.m. Dec. 10 to the area of Winter Garden-Vineland and Overstreet roads. A resident in Enclave at Berkshire Park reported suspects driving around and swiping boxes. The Sheriff’s Office then deployed deputies and its Chase helicopter to track and capture the thieves. “Our Sector 3 Dayshift A-Platoon deputies arrested four suspects for taking packages off the doorsteps of citizens in the Windermere/(Horizon West) area,” OCSO Public Information Officer Jane Watrel said. “Chase helicopter (personnel) spotted the suspects and were able to coordinate with the deputies.” The helicopter unit saw the suspects and vehicle matching the description while a suspect pilfered a package from a porch. The car then traveled to the Keene’s Pointe community, where deputies from several vehicles apprehended the suspects. The suspects — driver Brent Schwenneker, 19, of Winter Garden; Alexander Losada, 18; Antone Fernandez, 18; and Han-

nah Decker, 17, who owned the vehicle — now face charges of felony burglary. Enclave at Berkshire Park resident Jason Parker said he had witnessed the suspects taking boxes from people’s doors and decided to follow them to try to get a license plate number. “My wife and I were walking our dogs with our daughter,” he said. “We noticed that five or six houses down, there was a gentleman that had a rather large box, and he was running from a porch to a car.” A neighbor who happened to

be outside told Parker she would call the police, and Parker hustled to the one way the car could go to exit the area, he said. He missed the license plate number, but the car drove by again. “The way they went, I could tell they were going to the back of our neighborhood, which there’s only one way to get out of, so I figured maybe I would be able to jump in my truck, get down there and get a license plate number,” he said. “At that point, I went down to the town house complex here at Berkshire Park, and I called the cops.” He saw the suspect car parked again, and that same man had run to two houses before getting back in the car, Parker said. “It looked like they were following the FedEx Express truck, because it had just left that area,” he said. “They turned down the road and just really floored it, and I didn’t want to do 50 or 60 (mph) in a neighborhood area.” Parker, still on the phone with law-enforcement officials, went to meet an officer at the original location. “It just so happened that the people in the car had circled back around in the town house area,” he said. “They had again blasted through the neighborhood. I saw a cop at the entrance, and I told him the car had just turned onto the main street.” Parker gave the officer a description, at which point officers took off after the suspects.

400 block of Torgiano Way. Burglary. An officer responded at 4:50 a.m. to Westyn Bay Boulevard regarding a shoeless, shirtless man sneaking into a neighborhood and failing to open a vehicle door. The officer found the suspect, who seemed intoxicated, with a camera on Torgiano Way. The suspect said he had been walking all night and did not live there. When asked why he had the camera, he asked, “What camera?” and responded, “That’s not mine,” when shown the camera he had just been carrying. Officers noticed items scattered on the ground near a truck and alerted the owner, who said his camera was missing. It was the camera the suspect had, worth about $450. There was also about $40 of damage to the victim’s daughter’s reading glasses. Officers arrested the suspect on charges of burglary, grand theft, loitering and criminal mischief.

Libraries launch pilot program The Orange County Library System will be offering accredited, private high-school diplomas and career certificates as part of a new pilot program. Orange County is one of 11 public library systems across the state to offer Career Online High School, which already has seen success at libraries across the country. Currently, more than 1.2 million working residents of Florida ages 25 to 44 — or 12.1% of the state’s working-age population — lack high-school diplomas. The Career Online High School project is administered by Smart
Horizons Career Online Education through a partnership with Gale, a part of Cengage Learning. Eleven libraries throughout the state applied to be a part of this initiative and will award scholarships for Career Online High School to qualified learners looking to earn private high school diplomas and advance their careers. Each student enrolled in Career Online High School is paired with an academic coach who offers ongoing guidance and encouragement, evaluates performance and connects the learner with the resources needed to demonstrate mastery of the course material. Classes are supported by state board-certified instructors, and students have 24/7 access to the online learning platform. Coursework begins in one of eight high-growth, high-demand career fields before progressing to the core academic subjects. Interested Florida residents can visit careeronlinehs.gale. com/fl to learn more about the program and which libraries will be offering it.

Winter Blooms TIPS n Rotate the piece as you work to make sure it looks balanced and beautiful from all sides. n Use a flat floral knife to trim the stems and leaves of large focal flowers. Scissors often pinch the stems and prevent the flowers from taking in enough water. n Mix one tablespoon of peroxide into the water to help flowers last longer. n Salal holds floral paint quite well. You can paint your leaves gold or silver for some extra sparkle.

eribeth Jackson and Imelda Jimenez, from Betty J’s Florist in Ocoee, gave a demonstration for the Windermere Garden Club last month about holiday floral arrangements. Jimenez is the shop’s main designer for event orders and showed the women of the club how to create beautiful pieces for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Jimenez came to the United States from Mexico when she was a teenager. After high school, she got a job at a flower shop in California, where she started learning the basic principles of design. Within a year, the shop had put her in charge of orders for funerals and weddings. “I always liked art,” Jimenez said. “I like playing with color.” Jimenez and her husband later moved to Ocoee, and she has worked at Betty J’s for nine years. “We say she designs from the heart. In every way, she does,” Jackson said about Jimenez. “Everything comes out beautiful.” Betty J’s is located at 6 S. Bluford Ave., Ocoee, and serves all of West Orange County. n Mount your camera on a tripod and manually focus on the lights — use liveview if possible to ensure focus is sharp. n Use manual mode, aperture f5.6, ISO 600-800, lens as wide as possible to capture the whole scene. Shutter speeds will vary as the daylight falls but start around 1/15sec. Adjust shutter speed as needed as the light falls — don’t adjust aperture! n I prefer lower ISO and longer exposure times — ISO200 and speeds from 1/4 to 2seconds long — but you’ll need a good tripod to ensure a blur-free image. Lower ISO gives less noise in the image. To avoid blur caused by camera shake use the self timer for each shot. n Set white balance to either daylight (sun symbol) or tungsten (lightbulb). Daylight will look natural and tungsten will make the skies a stronger blue for color contrast. n Switch on some house lights to add some shape and warmth to the image. n Once the sky is completely dark, zoom in for detail shots.

ree lights look great when out of focus in the background. The key once again, is to balance the ambient light with the Christmas lights. For best results you’ll want the widest f stop possible (smallest f number).
n Put your camera on manual to stay in control, start at ISO800 and shutter speed around 1/60sec. Adjust ISO or shutter speed if the image is too dark or bright. n If you have a speedlight (flash), point it at the ceiling and bounce the light. If you only have on-camera flash, then run a few tests to ensure it isn’t overpowering the scene — adjust. Flash will enliven the light on the subject’s face and create a catchlight in the eyes. n Take photos in bursts of three or more — you are working at slow shutter speeds and subject movement will result in blur — shooting in bursts gives a better chance of capturing a sharp image.

Festival of lights shines on West Orange County Gloria Green of The Jewish Pavilion has been visiting dozens of local senior facilities to share a celebration of Hanukkah, which began Dec. 6 and ended Monday evening. These services bring Jewish Hanukkah traditions and music into these facilities where residents enjoy the traditional latkes (potato pancakes) and other holiday treats. The latkes are in remembrance of the lamp oil that miraculously remained lit for eight days at the rededication of the sacred Temple in Jerusalem following its destruction in 168 BCE. Green, the program director at The Jewish Pavilion and a Winter Garden resident, has 12 such celebrations at facilities from Winter Garden to Dr. Phillips and downtown Orlando, including Lake Bennett Health & Rehabilitation in Ocoee; Brookdale Ocoee Senior Living; Quality Health and Health Central Park, both in Winter Garden; and Brookdale Dr. Phillips. The Jewish Pavilion can be described as a “mobile” community center and has the assistance of 350 volunteers and a small staff. For more information, to contribute, or volunteer for The Jewish Pavilion, visit jewishpavilion.org or call (407) 678-9363.
Risa and Jeff Sikora, along with their sons, Chad and Grant, helped grandfather Sheldon Silberstein celebrate Hanukkah along with a dozen other residents at Brookdale Ocoee Assisted Living. Gloria Green, program director for The Jewish Pavilion, arranged the event with Brookdale Activity Director Christine Gerard. Frequent guest and much-loved performer Kenny Wayne played Broadway and holiday favorites.

FROM THE WINTER GARDEN HERITAGE FOUNDATION THROWBACK THURSDAY DEC. 5, 1941 Florida citrus was always a special treat, especially for family and friends living in colder climes. An advertisement in the Dec. 5, 1941, issue of West Orange News suggested folks buy local fruit to give as a holiday gift. That year, there were about 45,000 acres of citrus in all of Orange County and dozens of growers in West Orange County.

years ago, Jules Joseph and George Schanck were training together as a part of a football workout at Ocoee High School. At the time, the two athletes didn’t know one another, but Joseph encouraged Schanck to come out for the wrestling team. Now in their third season wrestling together, that invitation has paid dividends. Joseph and Schanck have already left a strong mark on the Ocoee wres-

Only one other wrestler in the Ocoee wrestling program’s five-year history had gone before. “It was pretty exciting,” Joseph said. “A lot of hard work I put in the season making it to the state tournament. When did you start playing basketball? I started playing basketball when I was 5, and I would say I got into it on my own — no one played basketball in my family. Do you have a favorite player or team? Lebron (James). He’s my favorite player, and I don’t have a team, so wherever he goes I go — best player. Do you play any other sports? No, but if I had a choice — if basketball didn’t work out — I’d say tennis. I like to watch tennis. Tennis is hard.

Do you have a favorite memory playing basketball here? I do. I have to say our first game here against West Orange. We came out with a bang. I felt like we played well, and that’s something we have to be consistent on, bring that to the other games. What about basketball do you like the most? I just like being part of a team, and doing something not on your own but as a team makes it more fun. Being able to bond with each other means something. What are your plans after high school? I definitely want to go to college. I want to study health and sciences. I would like to be a pediatric nurse. That’s what I want to do after my career in basketball. Are there any colleges you’re looking at yet? No, I’m undecided right now. Do you have a favorite class in school? My favorite class would have to be physics, just because of my teacher. Out of all my teachers, she keeps us entertained and she teaches at the same time, so it’s pretty fun. What do you like to do in your free time? I don’t like to go out much. I like to spend time with my family, go to my godmother’s house or just catch a movie with my dad. Is there a movie you’ve seen or looked forward to recently? My kids are very smart with good football IQs. They get to the ball and they play fast.” The Bulldogs were dominant over their six days at this fall’s national tournament, winning their second and third games — against the Calumet City (Illinois) Thunderbolts and the Miners, respectively — by a combined 61 points. the second half before mounting a comeback. “The Palm Bay game, actually, made my team dial in even more,” Middleton said. “We were down by 12 with eight minutes left in the game and found a way to come back.” Afterward, parents, family and friends celebrated with their undefeated champions, and newly elected Ocoee Mayor Rusty Johnson congratulated the team and invited them to the next City Commission meeting to be recognized for their achievement. It is the first national championship for the Bulldogs organization and the first in more than a decade for the Mid-Florida Pop Warner Conference. “I’m ecstatic,” Middleton said. “I’m happy for these kids, because a lot of these kids have been playing Pop Warner Football since they were 5 years old. We love it.”

Ocoee wrestling on the rise CONTINUED FROM 19A
At the state competition, Joseph, now a senior, and Schanck, a junior, were able to wrestle against higher-level competitors and gain more experience. They continued gaining experience this summer at the AAU National Duels and the USA Wrestling Freestyle and Greco Nationals. In the AAU National Duels, the team they competed with, Westside Wrestling, came in fifth. Joseph won seven of 10 duels and Schanck won six of 10. The competition made the teammates want to be more well-rounded wrestlers. “It makes you want to work
ONLINE
harder,” Schanck said. “You see that everyone is good, and you can be good in your area, but in other areas you can be bad.” Both Schanck and Joseph learned they want to improve their shots. “In those competitions we learned that shots help us win matches,” Joseph said. Now, the duo leads a team of Ocoee wrestlers who have more experience than years past. Mike Shultz, who takes over the program this year after spending the last three seasons as an assistant, has watched the team develop into a contender. “This is a really good group,” Shultz said. “This is one of the better young groups I’ve worked with. They’re good, hard-work-
ing kids — very together.” Now with a history of three players competing at state, the team has a foundation to build upon. But Shultz isn’t out to weigh his athletes down with pressure and lofty goals. Instead, he is encouraging the team to focus on every match and meet as they come and to continue to a build a culture for a strong wrestling program at Ocoee High School. “Never look past the first match; always just focus on the next match, the next opponent you have,” Joseph said. “Just take it one match at a time,” Schanck added. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR KISSIMMEE The Ocoee
Cardinals 14U team concluded play at American Youth Football Nationals the morning of Dec. 10 by dominating a team from East Valley, Arizona, 32-0. The victory locked up third place in the 14U A Bracket for the Cardinals and came just two days after Ocoee defeated a team from Salem, Massachusetts, by the same score. In the tournament’s opening round, on Dec. 6, the Cardinals struggled in part due to the long layoff between Southeast Regionals and Nationals. The break was nearly a month, as AYF Southeast Regionals concluded Nov. 13. Ocoee, which also was down to 17 players because of injury, fell to the Osceola Panthers in that opening contest, 28-0. “I’m proud that they worked through their adversity,” head coach Julian Pittman said. “We have a lot of injuries and a couple guys who didn’t make it to the second and third game. So, for these guys to come together and play through adversity, I’m just very proud of them — hats go off to them.” The Ocoee Cardinals organization competes during the regular season in the Central Florida

This is the second time Pittman has had a team place in the top three at nationals, having had a prior team place second in the nation in 2013. “I’d just like to thank my assistant coaches and the parents; I’ve got a good staff,” Pittman said. “We teach fundamentals, we teach the basics and we teach having fun.” And, although the kids may not
all be teammates going forward at the high-school level, Pittman and his staff are optimistic that wherever the play their varsity ball, they will represent the Cardinals well. “When they go to high school, I want the high school coach to say, ‘At least you learned something (in youth football),’” Pittman said. “They can bring what we taught them and transition to that next level.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

New girls hoops coaches lead area programs West Orange’s Mark Oates and Foundation Academy’s Dejon Everson hope to build contenders out of young programs beginning this winter. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR WINTER GARDEN There
are two new head coaches for girls basketball programs in Winter Garden, with Mark Oates taking over this fall at West Orange High and Dejon Everson the new coach at Foundation Academy. Both coaches hope they can
take young teams and build them into contenders. Oates comes to the Warriors (4-4) after a successful run at Leesburg High in Lake County. During his time coaching the Jackets, Leesburg made the playoffs seven times and won three regional championships. Beyond that, Oates said he felt good
“I’m just looking to take the program further than it’s ever been before; I want them to have a passion for the game and love it just like I (do).”
about having a program where athletes grew as individuals. “Family — that’s what we did at Leesburg and that’s what I’m trying to bring here,” Oates said. “We try to teach life skills through basketball. … The thing I’m most proud about with my time at Leesburg is every girl that came through our program went to college.” After a 2014-15 season for West Orange that was cancelled because of problems within the team, Oates now is heading a program that has just one holdover from last year’s roster: Ciara Thompson. Thompson, a UCF signee and the Warriors’ best player, is averaging 13.8 points per game to pair with 9.4 rebounds. “She’s very important because the other girls look up to her,” Oates said. “(Thompson is a) wonderful kid, she’s very coachable. I wish she was a freshman.” Fortunately, Oates does have plenty of freshmen on the team — seven, to be exact. One of those is the team’s second-leading scorer, Christina Kline (13.4 points per game), who Oates says is fearless. The Warriors have won two consecutive contests after falling to Wekiva Dec. 1, and Oates is optimistic he can instill a greater sense of passion and toughness upon his young team. Where Oates has a long résumé in the girls game, Everson is new to it. After serving as an assistant at Foundation for three years on the boys side, the young coach has earned his first head coaching role with the girls varsity team. The Lions are 4-7 so far, and Everson is looking to lay a foundation for

the rest of the season — and seasons to come. “I’m just looking to take the program further than it’s ever been before; I want them to have a passion for the game and love it just like I (do),” Everson said. “I’m trying to do something more uptempo. I only have two plays — I’m just trying to keep it simple.” Coming from the boys side, Everson has had to adapt his coaching style and his game plan to meet the needs of a young roster for Foundation. He has been
encouraged by the girls’ gameby-game improvements. “We’re a lot better than where we first started,” Everson said. “I’m happy. Every little thing I take as a plus.” The Lions are next in action at 6 p.m. Dec. 17 at International Community School, and the Warriors will travel to take on Oak Ridge, also Dec. 17, with that contest set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

MISSION: SURVIVE THE HOLIDAYS
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to enjoy yourself this holiday season at family and work gatherings without packing on the pounds.
Five effective ways to keep weight off Protein is, by nature, very filling. And by filling up on lean protein, you’ll avoid other — potentially more destructive — food items at the buffet. 2. Add veggies. Find the vegetables that are prepared healthy, such as a veggie platter of raw vegetables, salad (but skip the croutons and bacon bits and use a little olive oil and vinegar for dressing), roasted/ baked vegetables, green beans and Brussels sprouts, and fill up the remainder of your plate with the veggies. The combination of protein and vegetables will leave you feeling satiated.
KAREN REPASSY WINTER GARDEN YOGA
I know how it feels to go into the new year feeling puffy, tired and depressed because the scale showed I gained five pounds — or more. However, with just a few adjustments to my holiday game plan, the last three years have been completely different. It is possible to go into the new year feeling healthy. These are tried-and-true tips that have been successfully implemented by me as well as many of my clients. 1. Start with protein. So you’re scoping out the buffet setup at a holiday party, and you’re contemplating what to eat. I’m betting there’s a turkey there. Or a ham. Or some shrimp cocktail. Start with the protein first.
3. Bring your own healthy dish. Many times, the parties you attend throughout the holidays are potluck style. This is a great opportunity for you to contribute something healthy to the table. Bring whatever your weakness is. If it is dessert, prepare a healthy dessert. If it is the side dish, prepare your favorite vegetable cooked in a healthy way. 4. Don’t go hungry. Instead of showing up with your stomach growling and mouth salivating, take action to ensure you arrive
in the exact opposite position. How? Easy. Have something healthy before you arrive. Have a protein shake before you go or snack such as almonds and apples. It is easier to say “no” when we keep hunger and cravings at bay. 5. Do not drink calories. Calories in beverages are wasted calories. They do nothing to increase satiety or fullness. If it has calories, don’t drink it — plain and simple. If you’d like some variety beyond plain water, add fruit to your water, have unsweet tea or seltzer water with a slice of lemon. As soon as you arrive, before you do anything else, pour yourself a big glass of water, drink it down and wait 15 minutes before eating anything. Let this be the year that’s different from all the others; the year where you actually begin healthier and fitter than all the previous years combined. IronDAD: Avoid the holiday gut It’s no secret that the holidays are the worst time of year for healthy eating. It is so hard to go to family functions and not eat at least one piece of Grandma’s special pie or your sister’s famous marshmallow surprise that she only makes one time a year. Just like the Real IronDAD blog, the holidays are about food, family, and fun. There is a way to have all three without getting completely off track with your health. There’s another reason not to go crazy at holiday parties. It’s no coincidence that the holidays are the sickest time of year. It’s not just the cold weather that gets us sneezing. It makes perfect sense — we gorge ourselves in the name of jolly feelings that abound throughout the last few months of the year, starting off with the biggest junk food day, Halloween. We eat a ton of candy and send our immune systems into a tailspin as we continue to go to parties, eat too many desserts and drink alcohol without being responsible for controlling our intake. Working out? Forget that! We are too busy with holiday functions and shopping. By the time we get to January, we are so out of control that we make a New Year’s resolution to be healthier, which on average lasts about two weeks.
CORY WARREN REAL IRONDAD
We always hear about how diets don’t work because they are temporary. Lifestyle changes are permanent. If you have made a lifestyle change for the better and want to stay healthy this holiday season, stay true to yourself. This holiday season, I want you to enjoy the cookie. I want you to have some of Grandma’s pie. Go ahead, eat that special dessert your sister makes, but don’t forget about your best friends: fruits and veggies. Continue to think about your plant-powered proteins, fruits, veggies and grains. If you know you have a holiday party at night with an amazing buffet, eat clean whole foods all day so you can have a treat at night. You’ve got this. When you are ready, get back on track. The holidays are only temporary, but the damage you do to your body by overindulging could be permanent if you keep these habits. Cory Warren is a husband, father of three, vegan triathlete and ironman. His blog, Real IronDAD, is available at realirondad.com.

What can you buy for $200,000 to $250,000?
The West Orange Solar Coop, which has accumulated more than 50 members since it was first organized, has selected an installer of solar panels for the homes of its members. SEM Power, based in Tampa, is the installer of choice, based on its price estimates and quality of service. “Because they buy in bulk, they have no shipping fees and are able to offer very low prices to their customers,” said Joan Cleary, one of the leaders of the co-op. “It was the combination of experience, excellence in workmanship and low prices that prompted us to choose SEM Power.” New members still can join. The next meeting will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at Windermere Library, 530 Main St.
After more than forty years of serving clients in the Winter Garden community, Larry Cappleman will retire effective Jan. 1, 2016. Cappleman has handled local insurance coverage through Hillcrest Insurance Agency and his family’s business before that for more than 42 years. He will continue to act as chief financial officer of Hillcrest and will continue to be involved with Hillcrest Financial and Business planning through 2018. Kevin McEwan, Larry Cappleman’s longtime business partner, will step up to help manage Hillcrest’s insurance clients, and Linda Harz will continue to assist with routine issues and questions. Heather Ogilvie, Andrea West and new personal insurance specialist Victor Ruser will keep providing assistance with Hillcrest’s insurance coverage. Cappleman plans to use his time in retirement to spend time traveling with his wife, Debbie.

InstaNatural, a line of natural skincare and beauty products that was launched in 2013 by founder AJ Patel, has selected Winter Garden resident Dan Brenner as its new CEO, chosen for his experience in product development and medical marketing. “As the business has continued to evolve and expand along with our customer base, it only felt right to bring in more support to take InstaNatural to the next level,” Patel said. “Dan has the vision and background to take us there, and I’m thrilled to have him as our new CEO.” Brenner graduated with an MBA from the University of Florida and then worked for Charles Schwab before moving to SPRIM, a multidisciplinary team of professionals with expertise in turning scientific data into strategic added-value for businesses. At SPRIM, Brenner helped companies across the whole product development cycle, from ideation to clinical research and all the way through marketing. “We would basically scour the world and find these technologies and give them a development plan
for making this a reality,” Brenner said. He worked on a variety of products at SPRIM, but his largest client was Unilever and his largest brand was Dove. Primarily, his work was in the Americas, but he also worked with the brand in Europe and Asia. After more than three years at SPRIM, Brenner decided to join his friend Patel at InstaNatural, offering his network, marketing angles, development experience and ambition to the team. “As InstaNatural was becoming a really well developed e-commerce machine, it didn’t really have a vision for, what would a billion-dollar plan look like?” The vision behind InstaNatural is to develop beauty products that are effective without some of the harsh chemicals that similar products often contain. In the next two years, the company expects to launch a men’s line, baby line, sun-protection products and clinical products for conditions such as acne and eczema. InstaNatural’s leadership team comprises mostly men, but because the target market of the line is women, Heather Wilson was invited to join as director of

Catherine Cavins, left, and Piper Hood are the owners of HUB 925 — a new co-working space in Dr. Phillips.
Partners Piper Hood and Cathy Cavins introduced HUB 925 in late October as the newest addition to a growing shared-workspace scene. STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR DR. PHILLIPS Like many ideas, the
genesis of HUB 925 was rooted in a need that wasn’t being met. When business meetings would bring together MetroWest resident Piper Hood, who owns a sales performance improvement company called Shop Source LLC, and Dr. Phillips’ Catherine Cavins, who owns Focal Point
Construction Services, they often found themselves struggling to find adequate space at places such as Starbucks and Panera Bread. Both women work from home, and their options for meetings could be inconvenient for business — especially when reviewing construction plans, which tend to be larger than some of the tables available. Even being sure that a table would be available could be problematic. Cavins began to consider renting office space, but she was also familiar with the idea of co-working spaces and felt she would prefer that setting. Of course, when she discovered such a space had yet to open in

southwest Orange County and — more specifically — in Dr. Phillips, an idea was born. “I sent (Piper) an email that (was titled), ‘Crazy idea,’” Cavins said of the lightbulb moment. As of Oct. 23, though, that “crazy idea” is a reality, and the two local residents are partners. HUB 925 opened in the Venezia Plaza shopping center on Sand Lake Road. The new co-working space bills itself as “an ideal respite from a distracting home office, overcrowded coffee shop or stale office environment.” The concept itself is something Hood and Cavins are excited to introduce to the market. “The easiest way to explain (a co-working space) is just to say it’s a place to go and get work done,” Hood said. From personal experience, Hood said working from home sometimes is not all it is cracked up to be. The home environment can be distracting and isolating, and a co-working space can provide the camaraderie and energy of an office — without the actual office, she said. HUB 925 offers a variety of work area options within its 2,000-square-foot location. There are individual desks, tables, high-top tables, lounge areas for informal meetings and discussions, and conference rooms. The location includes business-class WiFi, two private phone booths for important phone calls, the ability to print, scan, fax or copy,
and a full-service coffee bar and power snacks in the afternoons. And, as is the case with other co-working spaces — as the model becomes increasingly popular nationally — HUB 925 can be a place where entrepreneurs and professionals can network with other members, too. One of the big selling points so far for the new space is its unique, trendy décor that is designed to impress and to fuel creativity. “We kind of zeroed in on this whole industrial look,” Hood said. “We knew we didn’t want a traditional office or call center look. Since we’ve opened, every person that walks in the door says, ‘Wow, this is cool.’ I think (the decor is) the No. 1 thing that draws people in.” Hood and Cavins also are excited about their specific location — along Restaurant Row, in the same plaza as popular restaurants such as Rocco’s Tacos and having a close proximity to Interstate 4, International Drive and the Orange County Convention Center. HUB 925 offers different options for members, based on how many days a week they would like to use the space. Although this model was part of the equation from the beginning, another arose — once again — to meet a need. When a freelance photographer sought the ability to just rent one of the two conference rooms for her meetings, that opened the partners’ eyes to a new possibility. Now, conference rooms are available to rent by the hour, and the venue itself is available to rent after business hours. “It could have an alter-ego,” Cavins said of the space. “It’s got the daytime, serious, nineto-five atmosphere for working. But, then it can also expand into a social networking and business networking after-hours (venue).”
