Elizabeth Otz is working on socializing a rescued Paso Fino named Glory.

Home Sweet Home A Winter Garden woman is starting a rescue to give animals a second chance and offer children an opportunity to work with horses. STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN From foster chil-

dren to abused animals, Elizabeth Otz is the kind of person who can’t stand the thought of someone being without a loving home. “I rescue everything,” Otz said. “My heart’s just open for it.” But now, she’s official. She recently started leasing a property on Beard Road with pastures and a historic barn, which she has named Elizabeth’s Sweet Home Rescue. Current residents include horses and a rabbit, but she’s open to goats, chickens, cats and just about anything else with paws, hooves or wings. About a month ago, Otz took in a Paso Fino horse and renamed him Glory. “He might look a little scrappy now, but if you saw what he looked like before …” Otz said. Glory had been stalled with no contact, no paddock

access and little food for more than four months. Within a few weeks at Elizabeth’s Sweet Home Rescue, he had put on 200 pounds and begun to take small steps toward trusting Otz. “He’ll let me touch around his face, but when I touch his body, he still trembles,” Otz said. “Once I can get him socialized, he’s going to make somebody a really nice horse.” Otz’s goal is for the animals to get adopted into permanent homes. But she also wants the barn and pastures to be a place where children can learn to ride horses without the expenses that many for-profit barns require. She has experience in therapeutic riding and would like to offer such a service. Otz said her husband is not a “horse person,” and although she has a couple of volunteers who help with feeding, she still needs lots of help. High-school students can earn communityservice hours by helping her clean up the property and make it safe for young children. Members of the Winter Garden Rotary Club have donated equipment — even a horse trailer — but there are still other needs to be met and vet bills to be paid. “I have to make this work; I just have to,” Otz said. “I’ve come this far. If I have to do every stitch of work myself, I will.” Contact Catherine Kerr at ckerr@orangeobserver.com.

The rescue will take in nearly any animal, including rabbits.

HOW TO HELP To contact Elizabeth Otz about donating funds, equipment, feed or volunteer hours, contact her at (407) 4062291 or sweethomerescue14@yahoo.com. Otz can provide letters for community service requirements and tax-deductible donations.

WATER METER UPGRADES

The commission unanimously voted to accept a matching costshare grant from the St. Johns River Water Management District. The agreement includes funding support from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to upgrade more than 500 water meters to Advanced Metering Infrastructure with AquaHawk Alerting functionality. The grant amount is not to exceed $55,735. Designated neighborhoods for these water meter replacements include Coventry, Hidden Glen, Lakewood Manor, Richfield and Silver Bend. SCOREBOARD FUNDING

Former Ocoee Commissioner Gary Hood asked the commission to approve funding of almost $18,000 to improve scoreboards for Ocoee Little League and Ocoee youth football. Grogan said the city has a

responsibility as owner of the scoreboards and the fields of these organizations to maintain them. Other commissioners agreed and checked with City Manager Robert Frank to see whether contingency funding was left in the budget. The commission ultimately voted 4-0 in favor of funding improvements to the scoreboards. NEW CULTURAL CELEBRATION

Resident and Human Relations Diversity Board member Bill Maxwell presented on behalf of a large subcommittee aiming to organize Ocoee World Fest, an event celebrating the multicultural history and present of the city through cuisine, dance, art, music, pageantry and more. Maxwell, the subcommittee chairman, said plans would be to hold the event May 13 and 14, 2016, with a parade on the latter day. Expenses for this proposed replacement of Fiesta de Colores would be around $118,000, per subcommittee estimates, he said. He set $68,000 as a fundraising goal and said $57,000 in revenue could be generated, including $15,000 from the city. The commission encouraged Maxwell and the subcommittee to pursue funding for the event. Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.

City Commission will have five members for its first 2016 meeting for the first time since the retirement of Mayor S. Scott Vandergrift to end July. Since then, District 1 Commissioner John Grogan has served time as interim mayor and former District 3 Commissioner Rusty Johnson has been elected mayor. Both of their seats will be up for election in March 2016, as well as the District 3 seat, which the commission filled by unanimous appointment at its Dec. 15 meeting. The appointee is Angel de la Portilla, who has been a resident of Ocoee for a decade and started serving on the Planning & Zoning Commission in 2010. De la Portilla said he would not seek reelection in March because of commitments to his family and his career. The whole commission agreed appointing someone not seeking election in March would be fairest, so it chose de la Portilla as the person to swear in at its Jan. 5 meeting. De la Portilla emphasized continuing collaboration with Winter Garden and Apopka, as well as further pursuit of the economic development of Ocoee, as his focuses for his time on the commission, which could be less than three months.

A Hallelujah chorus

Observer “If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

Editor’s note: Vina Mogg is the mother of a former West Orange High School choir student. She wrote this piece about West Orange choral director Dr. Jeff Redding, who has been a guest conductor for the Candlelight Processional at EPCOT this season.

he conductor stately walks down the corridor toward us. The tails of his tuxedo are perfectly pressed, the pleats of his starched white shirt under the lapels perfectly parallel, and his endless toothy smile reaches from cheek to cheek when he sees my mama and me. Once, he was the kind of unruly boy my mom used to teach. Decades later, he has harnessed his boundless energy into bringing out the power of music into young people as the West Orange High School choral director. He bends over to kiss mom on the head. “Hello, Mama,” he says as she looks up to him from her wheelchair. A smile of recognition lights up her face even though it has been eight years since she has last seen him, when he was her conductor in a Christmas choir. “Hello,” she smiles endlessly back, squeezing his hand. After a hug he turns and marches toward the stage entrance. I have watched Dr. Jeffery Redding conduct award-winning high-school choirs beneath the lights of Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, in the ancient colosseum of Verona and in the courtyard of San Marco Plaza in Venice. But tonight, I watch his elegant tails march toward the stage of the American Gardens Theatre at EPCOT in Walt Disney World to lead the time-honored tradition of the Candlelight Processional, a Christmas tradition that Walt Disney himself began more than 50 years ago. Redding takes the honored position behind the podium to conduct the 50-piece orchestra and 300 voices of the Disney Voices of Liberty, Cast Member Choir and auditioned highschool choirs. The tradition of story and song together this holiday season seems to bring comfort and joy to a world full of randomness. Many are drawn to the comfort of this familiar message, this familiar music, these familiar words we have heard over and over in our heads for years. These words spoken and sung tonight bring tears to my eyes as I watch my 91-year-old mama, sitting next to me in her wheelchair, her Alzheimer’s disease-riddled mind brought clear this night through the power of music, song and story. I see her face radiate with joy. I watch her hands moving gracefully to the music, mimicking the elegant movements of Redding’s on stage. She turns to me and smiles. “He is such a good conductor,” she says. This mama of mine, who one month ago was in ICU, suffered a mild stroke, an infection and rounds of tests and antibiotics, is a completely different person next to me, her whole body

swaying and clapping and singing to the familiar songs of “Joy to the World,” “Silent Night” and her favorite: Fall on your knees, oh hear the angel voices. Oh night divine, Oh night, when Christ was born. Oh night, O Holy Night, Oh night divine. Tonight is a divine night, as I see my mama transform through the power of music, transform as she watches my friend bring to life and draw out from these voices and instruments the power and glory of the words and the notes so often heard but not truly experienced. I am one of the first to stand as I hear the strings start up the familiar introduction to Handel’s Messiah. Mama also tries to stand, but her legs are too weak. I grab her hand, and together, we wave our clasped fingers to the powerful chorus and the strings and brass and percussion of the orchestra. Mama’s words are very few lately. But tonight, her words are crisp and clear: “King of Kings and Lord of Lords. And he shall reign forever and ever. Forever and ever. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!” Timeless words and melody that my mama revels in, body and soul. In this present moment, when all for her is

crystallized in time, in place, in right now, this beauty is all that matters. I may not have many moments with her like this. But this one Hallelujah chorus will be eternal in my heart. The performance is over. I don’t want this time to end, but I turn up the walkway to push Mama’s wheelchair up the aisle. I hear his familiar voice near the stage bellow out. “Don’t leave!” Mama and I wheel back toward the stage. In the midst of all those around him, clamoring for his attention, the conductor hustles over for a quick moment. “You were my inspiration tonight,” he leans over and whispers to Mama. “I was nervous when I first saw your earlier, but seeing you reminded me why I do this.” Her eyes twinkle, and a smile stretches across her entire face as he turns under the lights and walks away, clasping hands, touching others, touching lives, even after the baton is laid down.

Tonight is a divine night, as I see my mama transform through the power of music, transform as she watches my friend bring to life and draw out from these voices and instruments the power and glory of the words and the notes so often heard but not truly experienced.

17000 block of West Colonial Drive. Drunken driving. A complainant reported a fellow motorist as driving recklessly around 11:42 p.m., including a U-turn right in front of his car and repeated swerving. An officer stopped the vehicle and then smelled alcohol from its direction. The suspect said she had gotten lost en route to Kissimmee. The officer noticed a mixed drink, of which the driver denied knowledge. She admitted to having four drinks — starting at 5 p.m. — and then exited the car. She stumbled out sans shoes and then said she should not be driving. During her walk-andturn, she took 11 steps one direction and then 18 steps back despite instructions of nine steps each way. For her oneleg stand, she dropped her foot eight times and did not count, refusing to continue. A breath sample after her arrest registered at a blood-alcohol content of .217. OCOEE

Clarke and Clarcona Ocoee roads. Drunken driving. An officer saw a car make a U-turn through a red light at 11:26 p.m. The vehicle swerved out of its lane thrice while going 59 mph before hitting the curb on a turn and stopping. The driver tried to open his locked door five times because he said he needed to get out to remove his wallet from his back pocket. The officer

helped him do so and noticed he had wet his pants. The suspect was shoeless but performed the walk-and-turn, for which the officer asked whether he had injuries preventing him from the exercise. He listed diabetes and high blood pressure. He could not stay on the line and failed to count two steps. The officer arrested the subject on a drunken driving charge.

DEC. 10

Clarke Road and West Colonial Drive. Drug possession. At 10:52 p.m., an officer stopped a vehicle with seemingly illegal window tint. A faint cannabis odor emanated from the car, which the driver said had no drugs in it. When asked whether a car search would be a problem, the driver said, “Yes, we’re kind of in a hurry.” A tint meter measured the tint at 5%, which led to a traffic citation. A K-9 search was positive, so an officer search began, unnerving the passenger, who did not keep his arms still during a search. Officers found a marijuana baggie and a rum bottle near the passenger’s seat, only the latter of which the passenger admitted to owning. Both denied knowledge of the marijuana, so officers arrested the passenger on drug possession charges and had the car towed.

Retail and office space anticipated on Daniels Road ZAK KERR STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN

Dan Roberts, Great Southern Realty certified property manager, has been considering a business park project on Daniels Road for more than a decade. “There’s been a couple different iterations on the property since 2002,” he said of a plat between Burger King and West Orange Church of Christ. “We submitted a plan back then, and then obviously when the market kind of crashed, we pulled back our application and did not pursue it.” But now is a much better time in a recovering market to resume the pursuit of this project, which the Winter Garden City Commission had approved in one of its iterations in summer 2007. “Right now, we’re moving forward with the plan, and we hope to get it approved sometime in March by the city,” Roberts said. “If that happens, we’d probably be under construction sometime in late summer, early fall.” The current plans call for the construction of approximately 26,000 square feet of retail space in the front and about 32,000 square feet of professional office space in the rear, he said. “They’ll probably average between 3,000 and 4,000 square feet per tenant,” Roberts said.

Zak Kerr

This wooded area on Daniels Road is slated for development.

Medical professionals in particular have shown interest in this area because Florida Hospital Winter Garden is scheduled to open in February 2016, just two miles south off Daniels Road on Sembler Way. “The drivers now are that the market is stronger, there’s more … houses, and there’s a greater interest in retail, and then the hospital has been a big driver for our medical professional,” Roberts said. “That’s been a primary driver for us.” If all proceeds affirmatively, a tentative opening date would be in the late spring or early summer of 2017, he said. That would include a permit to clear the land. “We have a preliminary

approval to clear a portion of it, but we’re not going to move forward until we get the rest of the site approved,” Roberts said. “Our application is in to the St. Johns River Water Management District for a mass grading permit, so as we get that, then we’ll probably move forward there.” Some of those interested potential tenants have contacted Roberts about the space, but it is too soon to announce anything, he said. “It’s kind of premature for us,” Roberts said. “We think those schedules are pretty realistic right now, but I can’t say for sure.” Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.

DREAM fulfilled Fifteen years after it opening, Hope Charter School and Legacy Charter High School are being recognized for educational success. JENNIFER NESSLAR STAFF WRITER OCOEE Some mornings,

Crystal Yoakum arrives at Hope Charter School before anyone else. As she looks across the campus that she started 15 years ago, she is amazed at how far the school has come. “It is overwhelming to me that it has really been able to happen,” Yoakum, the CEO of Hope Charter School, said.

BEGINNINGS

The need for the school was personal. The Yoakums wanted to find the right school for their son, Josiah, who has autism. “We were just having a difficult time finding a setting in which he wasn’t afraid, he wasn’t just crying all day, where he was learning,” she said. “And we were just coming into: ‘What is autism? What does this mean for us? What do we do for him?’” Josiah attended a school for

children with autism. The Yoakums began doing some therapy. They changed his diet. They began to see his language skills and academics improve. “We really wanted to have an option for him that would include typical learners — regular kids he could learn to socialize and model after,” Yoakum said. The idea for Hope Charter School was born — a place where students on the autism spectrum could be included in the regular classroom, at least for part of the day. The school district unanimously approved the charter school, and in October 2000, the school opened for kindergartners through eighth-graders. The campus opened with 80 students and 10 employees, including Yoakum as principal. “It was a risk in the beginning,” Yoakum said. “We had an idea; we thought it would work.”

Chloe Guy, Camri Barnett and Liam Lamprecht are students at Legacy Charter High School and Hope Charter School.

“I like that isn’t just one type of student. We have In 15 years, the school has grown every type of student. I feel like it’s helped us to relate to 90 employees between Hope to (students with disabilities) and relate to the world and Legacy, the school’s highschool portion. Hope Charter outside of just in school. GROWTH PATTERN

currently has 465 students, while Legacy has 175. Being innovative has worked in the school’s favor.

In September, Legacy was named a Blue Ribbon School, one of 335 schools. Because of its 100% graduation rate, the school also was chosen for excellent performance. Classrooms are filled with all types of students. Some are gifted, while others have a more difficult time in their work. “I like that it isn’t just one type of student; we have every type of student,” said Chloe Guy, a senior at Legacy. “I feel like it’s helped us to relate to (students with disabilities) and relate to the world outside of just in school.” Elementary classes have both a teacher and an assistant to support students who might need extra help. Teachers work with students who would like extra tutoring or help after school. Exceptional education teachers are also on staff to make sure students are getting the help they need. “I like all the teachers; they’re all positive,” said Camri Barnett, a fourth-grade student. “They’re always wanting to help us.” Legacy could expand to another 50 students before it reaches capacity. But Hope has a waiting list of almost 600 students — a sign of the school’s success. “It’s extremely discouraging for people who have been on that waiting list and they have to redo it every year,” she said. “But to have been on the waiting list four and five years — they begin to really get discouraged. We are exploring the idea of replicating our K-8, and finding another location for us to do what we we’re doing here.” SUCCESS STORY

Josiah, the inspiration for the school, thrived there.

“He was such a success story,” Yoakum said. His classmates embraced his presence at the school. In 2013, he graduated from Legacy with a 3.85 GPA. He now helps out at the high school, where Yoakum doesn’t have oversight over him. He reads to students, delivers mail to the buildings and works with two rescue horses that the school received. The property north of the school will ultimately be used as a petting zoo for therapy purposes. The property will also allow the students to understand where milk and eggs come from. “I most likely would like to work with animals at a zoo,” Josiah said. Contact Jennifer Nesslar at jnesslar@wotimes.com.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT The school maintains nutritional guidelines intended to help the students stay focused throughout the day. Students receive no more than four grams of sugar per serving. They are served plenty of water to keep them hydrated. They also keep dyes, artificial colors and MSG out of the food they serve. But how do the students feel about that? “I like how the school has the no-sugar thing, which is a good thing,” said Liam Lamprecht, a fourth-grade student at Hope Charter School. “Even though most kids like sugar, it’s smart, in my opinion.”

land, where they have planned to begin their retirement. “This is pretty preliminary,” Keith said. “It could possibly be a while before it develops.” He said zoning likely would not be for another year, but the idea would be to have two upland areas connected by roads through wetlands. This drew the residents’ concern of wetlands not being preserved, but Environmental Protection Division official John Geiger said the wetlands would all be in an easement. “It’s not like they’re taking out a lot of wetlands,” Geiger said. “They might have a little road. … If they’re not bulldozing legally, we follow up, and this is one of those sites where there was illegal clearing done. In 2009, there was a violation reported, and … it took until 2012, when we sent an official letter saying it’s done. They had to do restoration, and they had to pay a fine.” A fine of $10,000 and a mandate to replant were among the consequences, Geiger said. CONNECTING HORIZON WEST

This area has been part of a study to figure out what Reams Road development would become, District 1 Orange County Commissioner S. Scott Boyd said. Construction to make all of Reams Road four lanes is fully funded, he said. Moreover, the Reams Road intersection with Center Drive — frequented most by Walt Disney World workers — ultimately

would shift west, Boyd said. Hydrology in the project area could shift, as well, based on a study that has shown water-use reduction of up to 50% with a new technology, Boyd said. St. Johns River Water Management District is encouraging replacements with the best available technology whenever there are breaks, Boyd said. Hookups are required to Orange County sewer and water for this project, Keith said. Trails in this area will hook up to other Horizon West roads, too, with a hope for Tiny Road trail to eventually connect to the West Orange Trail, Boyd said. Boyd expanded the discussion to the proposed Horizon West Sportsplex on Tiny Road and

stopped to pick up the dog, she saw the dog was a nursing mother. A neighbor told her she could find the owner by following all the animals running on the street. As she walked closer to the house, she saw the animals running around, skinny and covered in sores. One animal even had an eye hanging out of the socket. When Mohr knocked on the owner’s door and told her about the dead dog, the owner told her to throw the dead dog in the Dumpster. When she inquired about the dog’s puppies, the owner told Mohr that they were all dead except for one. Mohr asked to see the one living. She brought the dog out by the scruff of its neck. “He was so skinny, and he was just a mess,” Mohr said. “There (were) bugs crawling all over him.” The owner let Mohr keep Buddy, and she then nursed him back to health. TD Collectibles is helping a dog who needs some love this holiday season. Christina Mohr’s dog, Buddy, is the mascot of the Central Florida Disney Pin Chasers group, which meets at Holiday Inn on State Road 192. Through the Pin Chasers, Mohr met Tom and Diana Phillips, the owners of the Disney collectibles store, TD Collectibles. Because of extreme malnutrition early in his life, Buddy suffers from arthritis in his knees and now is in so much pain that he can no longer walk. Buddy’s veterinarian has recommended a procedure to file down the arthritis in his knees and tighten up his ligaments, so his knees no longer pop out of place. The operation, called patella luxation repair, costs $1,902 for each knee, and the vet can only operate on one knee at a time. Mohr hopes she can raise enough money to have Buddy’s first operation in January. Buddy is Mohr’s medical service alert dog. Mohr has reflex sympathetic dystrophy, which causes her to pass out if she stands too quickly. Buddy is able to detect if her blood pressure is too low and alert her. “I just want him to get better,” Mohr said. “He is just in so much pain, and he does so much for me and he makes other people happy just by seeing him because he’s so calm.”

Resident conquers ‘Horrible Hundred’ Kathleen Richardson has pulmonary hypertension, but she has taken up biking to stay in shape and raise awareness.

Daniel Layish, Central Florida Pulmonary. (407) 841-1100

SUPPORT GROUP A support group meets at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Orlando Heart Health Institute, 1222 S. Orange Ave. RSVP at Orlando_PH_ Support_Group@ live.com.

ABOUT PH Pulmonary hypertension is increased blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. It is often misdiagnosed as asthma or obesity. Here are some common symptoms: Shortness of breath Chest pain Dizziness Fainting Fatigue Blue lips Dry cough Chalky white or blue finger tips and toes

STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN

Most people assume regular exercise is essential to a healthy lifestyle. Get out there. Get that heart rate up. Get that blood flowing. But, for someone with a pulmonary hypertension diagnosis, that advice must taken with caution. PH is a debilitating disease in which someone experiences increased blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. This causes the arteries to constrict and capillaries to die off. The heart must work harder to pump blood. The right ventricle weakens, and congestive heart failure is at the end of the progression. That’s what makes Kathleen Richardson’s recent accomplishment all the more impressive. In November, the Winter Garden resident and PH patient completed the infamous “Horrible Hundred” this year — a 100-mile bike ride through the hills of Clermont. “I’ve known about the Horrible Hundred for quite a few years,” she said. “I’ve kind of wanted to do it, but I’ve been a little afraid because of the hills. With my pulmonary hypertension, I wasn’t sure if pushing up the hills would be a good thing for me or not.” And in doing so, Richardson continued her mission of raising money — and awareness — to support PH research. DIAGNOSIS

“I’m not a typical PH patient,” Richardson said. Most PH patients are not able to exercise to Richardson’s extent, and sometimes, even getting up and walking across a room is difficult. But Richardson is familiar with some of those feelings. She was diagnosed with PH when she was 38, after she noticed herself getting winded after doing everyday activities. She knew something was wrong when she climbed to the top of a

stadium at SeaWorld and was gasping for air. Friends she was with were her age and not winded. Her doctor performed several tests, and finally, a heart cath revealed she had elevated pressure in a pulmonary artery. Her doctor, who didn’t think much of it at first, consulted with another doctor who suggested it was PH. She took one of the first oral medications available for PH — Bosentan. There are currently 12 different treatments available for PH. LEARNING TO RIDE

A stress test led Richardson to biking. “The first time I did that, my legs were killing me,” Richardson said. “I didn’t want to have that be the reason why I stopped. I thought the reason why I stopped should be because of my breathing. Plus, I really didn’t like feeling that way.” She began riding her bike, but she had to be careful. PH patients

can cause more damage to the heart if they exercise too much. Exercise physiologists who administered the test told her she could exercise if she wanted to, but her heart rate couldn’t go above 115 beats per minute. That didn’t enable her to ride very fast, but she was able to do it biking on flat ground. As time went on, she was able to increase her heart rate, because the Bosentan was working. As her pulmonary pressure went down

Jennifer Nesslar

and her body got in better shape from riding, she got to the point where she didn’t have a heart-rate limit. Today, she averages about 15 miles per hour for 20 miles. Although she doesn’t consider that a competitive speed, she participated rides to raise awareness for causes such as ALS and diabetes. Team PHenomenal Hope is a team of people that race bicycles to raise awareness for PH. In June 2014, the team planned to compete in a Race Across America. Although Richardson was unable to participate, she still wanted do something with the team, so she decided to do a Unity Miles event with the team. From November 2013 to June 2014, she rode her bicycle 3,000 miles to raise awareness for PH. She raised a little more than $1,000 for PH research. Painting class CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11

Starting next month and continuing throughout the year, artists in West Orange will have an opportunity to harness the spirit of the sea at an oil-painting workshop taught by Kathie Camara. This Winter Garden Art Association class will last two days and is open to artists of any experience level, even first-time painters. On the first day of the workshop, students will gain the information they need to paint a seascape, such as the different parts of a wave and how it moves, and they will start the background of their pieces. The next day, they will fine-tune their work until it is complete. “That’s one of the things I learned — when you’re doing something like that, you don’t just slap it on and it’s fine,” Camara said. “You have to go over it and refine it until it looks beautiful.” Although Camara will help each student with his or her piece, she will not dictate identical instructions to everyone. MEET THE TEACHER

Camara lived most of her life in Massachusetts and started her art career there. She first became certified to teach painting in 2000 and has experience with watercolors, pastels, pen and ink and other media. Her media of choice

are usually acrylics and oils, but recently, she also has become immersed in glasswork. In 2004, after retiring, Camara and her husband followed their dream of living near Walt Disney World and moved to Central Florida. When the Winter Garden Art Association opened about two years ago and was looking for instructors, Camara signed on. She has led a pet portrait workshop numerous times at WGAA,

among other classes. Camara’s advice for first-time painters is simple. “Just come with an open mind,” Camara said. “Come to learn something. I’m a perpetual student; I take classes all the time. … I think it makes me a better artist and it makes me a better teacher to learn new things.” Contact Catherine Kerr at ckerr@orangeobserver.com.

FROM THE WINTER GARDEN HERITAGE FOUNDATION THROWBACK THURSDAY DEC. 20, 1984 George and Anne Bailey, former owners of The West Orange Times, liked to have fun with one of the pages in each Christmas issue. Staff members were depicted in various holiday scenes through the years, including this one in the Dec. 20, 1984, issue of The Times.

The West Orange News will abandon the tabloid size in 1936 and will be seven columns wide and 20 inches deep.

Shauna Dillon, of Sand Lake Hills, a student at Valencia Community College, has won the national “caring” award for volunteer work with kids. She has worked with terminally ill children through Give Kids The World for the past three years.

The West Orange Times asked area schools to submit their students’ thoughts on what the holidays mean to them. Here are some of the responses. n Zachary Bailey, second grade, Windermere Elementary: “Christmas means many things to me. First, I like Christmas because it is Jesus’ birthday. We celebrate his birthday on Christmas. Next, Christmas shows me that kids and families are having fun. We have fun because when we opened the presents we get surprised. Last, Christmas means Santa brings special presents to families. Some families get toys, clothes or computers. Christmas is one of my favorite days of the year.”

FROM THE ARCHIVES Depicted in the photograph is a Christmas diorama, titled “Christmas In Florida,” created by the late Mary Vea (Phillips) Tanner, a member of the First

United Methodist Church in Winter Garden and the wife of the late E. M. “Doc” Tanner (who had been the clerk for the city of Winter Garden).

She repurposed the cabinets of television sets into dioramas that were displayed in the Fellowship Hall of the church for several years during the Christmas season.

The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation, which seeks to preserve our heritage and architecture while creating new cultural experiences, is celebrating its third decade with the debut of its new History Research and Education Center.

n Briana Blankenship, fourth grade, Ocoee Elementary: “Christmas is special to me because … it’s Jesus’ birthday and it brings joy to your family and yourself. Christmas is

also special to me because you don’t have school, and it’s special to be out of work, and it’s also special to be out of both at the same time so that you can spend time with your

family. Spending time with your family is a special thing about Christmas because it’s the only time your whole family can get together.”

eachers and staff at West Orange High School enjoyed a festive afternoon Dec. 16 at the annual Teacher/ Staff Holiday Luncheon. Each year, the Parent-Teacher Student Organization organizes the event, which is intended to thank teachers and staff for their hard work throughout the year. Parents and alumni brought dishes to serve to the teachers. Other community members also participated: Olive Garden donated 200 breadsticks, and the West Orange lacrosse team gave gift cards to be raffled off at the lunch. The event also included an ugly sweater contest, with the winning teacher receiving a blanket as a prize.

Douglas Szcinski, principal of West Orange High School, was in the holiday spirit.

Rima Rabieh and Nadia Morel, guidance counselors, were two of a kind.

Bobcats take top spot… again

FHSAA’S CONCUSSIONS STATEMENT To coincide with the release of the film “Concussion,” the Florida High School Athletic Association issued a release Dec. 18 touting its efforts to reduce the risk of concussions during competition. Per the statement, “This is not a new issue for the FHSAA; for the past 10 years, the FHSAA and our partners at the National Federation of High School Associations have worked to minimize risk in all sports.” The association was among the first to implement a comprehensive concussion protocol and return-to-play policy in 2012. The complete statement can be found online at fhsaa.org.

OHS PARTNERS WITH NZONE Ocoee High School football coach Ben Bullock announced via Facebook that his program would be partnering with UCLA offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone and his NZONE System to implement a college-level spread offense. Per Bullock, the program will “allow our coaches, in all levels of the program, including youth, to teach the streamlined system.”

SURPRISE After two years of building, the Legacy soccer team is finding success and surprising its opponents. JENNIFER NESSLAR STAFF WRITER OCOEE When David

Hill, coach of the Legacy Charter High School soccer team, thought of the start of this season, his goal was to surprise people. The soccer program at Legacy is in its third season and experienced growing pains its first two years. In the first season, the team lost every game, and games ended in a mercy rule nearly three-fourths of the time. The second year was a bit better — the team played strong every time, though it won only five games, one of which was a forfeit. This year, the team has met Hill’s goal of being a surprise. The co-ed team has an 8-4-1 record and is poised to be third in its district. “It’s crazy how much we’ve improved from the very first year we’ve played,” said Cole Pruim, a junior striker who has played on the team for three years. “The program’s really taken off.” Emily Ripley, a junior who has been on the team all three years, has watched the team grow. She sees this year’s season as a product of hard work and teammates understanding one another. “We really work well together

consecutive year, the girls volleyball team at Bridgewater Middle School is the best in Orange County. The Bobcats completed a second undefeated season Dec. 16 with a 2-1 win (19-25, 25-17, 15-5) over Maitland Middle in the Orange County Public Schools Championship. After Maitland ended the first set on a 7-1 run to take a 1-0 lead, Bridgewater refocused in the second set with their season on the line. “I definitely think it turned around in the second game when we started strong with our serves,” head coach Layla West said. “It’s something that we’ve practiced and is kind of our signature.” In addition to the improved service effort, the Bobcats also benefited from the leadership of eighth-graders who, dating back to their sixth-grade season, only lost two games (36-2 combined middle school career record). Captains Emma McElveen and Taylor Head, in particular, were crucial to Bridgewater’s comeback effort. “These girls are seasoned,” coach Mark Bergner said. “(McElveen and Head) can calm the team down, and the team really listens to them.” The Bobcats also enjoyed playing in front of an energized crowd on their home floor. Steven Hogan Steven Hogan, a senior who played quarterback at Ocoee High School this season, went 6-for-6 at the Orange County Senior Bowl. Hogan is currently on the hunt for a college at which to play football.

Tell us about your experience at the Orange County Senior Bowl. It was a lot of fun. I played Pop Warner with a lot of the kids; we all grew up playing — we all went to different high schools — so it was fun playing with them. Tell us a little bit about your performance at the bowl. I played pretty (well) — the receivers played great, too. They didn’t drop any passes, and they ran great routes. The offensive line — I wasn’t on my back once the whole night. What’s your favorite thing about football? I like the hard work of it. (There’s) just something about the game, like the dedication you have to have to be good at it.

Tell us about your season at Ocoee and what you enjoyed about it. We had a turnaround season. We’ve won more games than we’ve won in the past two years this season, and we have a bunch of seniors that bought into the new program that Coach Bullock brought in. We had a great season. We went 6-4, we were one game out of the playoffs — you know that was kind of upsetting — but then going to the senior bowl and winning that game, it was kind of like playing a playoff game. How is the college hunt going, and are you interested in playing football in college? I’m looking to play at a fouryear college. I don’t know exactly where at, but any place that I can play football and get a great education would be great for me. Where are some places you’ve been looking around at? I’ve been looking at Valdosta State, Western State Colorado, Augustana and then a couple smaller schools. I’ve been on a visit to University of Princeton and schools like that. What would be your dream school? I grew up a Gator, so I’d have to go to University of Florida. What’s your favorite subject in school and why? I like science because I’m looking to major in some type of sports medicine. What’s one thing that people don’t know about you? I like to design cars online. I use a website, and you pick any car and you design the color and the style of car. — JENNIFER NESSLAR

as a team,” she said. “We grew together as a team.” This year, the team has enjoyed plenty of records and firsts: highest win total, most goals, first year participating in district play and its first hat trick. But why the sudden turnaround? “Having three years and having players stick with it, their skill level has gotten better,” Hill said. The team has also benefited from new, but talented, players. Two basketball players switched to soccer and added to the team. Three other starters transferred to the school. Six seniors left the team, so the new players were able to fill the gaps. Several of the new players also had experience playing travel soccer, which also raised the skill level of the team. Hill thinks the improvement of the team is a combination of the new and the old. “If our players that had been here since the beginning had not improved, then these additions still would be struggling, because you have nobody to pass it to,” Hill said. Specifically, the team has benefited from the addition of Caleb Enright, who plays center mid-

field this year after playing basketball the previous season. He is a strong leader on the team. Playing Miles Moyer as goalkeeper also has been a good move for Legacy. After the first game, Hill asked Moyer, who had never played goalkeeper, to try out for the position. Moyer agreed. “It turns out Miles is a phenomenal keeper,” Hill said. “He’s learning the game and he’s learning it fast.” Hill puts a strong emphasis on defense because he often says: “If they don’t score, we don’t lose.” The team hopes to maintain its success and complete a winning season. At the beginning of the season, Hill hoped to win the team’s first playoff game. Now, Hill hopes to make it to the district finals. He also emphasizes sportsmanship among his athletes. “I don’t want any cards for attitude problems,” Hill said. “If it’s an interpretation from the ref, OK I can take that. But I don’t want any of my kids to have poor sportsmanship and therefore get a yellow card or red card or blue card. And so far we’ve had no cards.” Contact Jennifer Nesslar at jnesslar@orangeobserver.com.

Bobcats win title “(The home crowd) was awesome,” Head said. “It really motivated us.” Bridgewater’s girls team has now won 28 consecutive games, spanning two seasons. For an eighth-grader such as McElveen, who will be moving on to start her high-school career next fall, it was a fitting end. “I’m so proud of (the younger players), and I cannot wait to come back next year and visit them to watch them do this again,” McElveen said. gone from the prior season, any coach would face some challenges with roster turnover. But for head coach Stan Banks, his Warriors girls soccer team has faced the challenge of its top two offensive threats of the last four years graduating in 2015: Hannah Zoeltsch and Maddison Skretteberg, who was the third-highest goal-scorer in program history. “That has been a big hole to fill in our offensive game, because she averaged 19 goals a season for her career,” Banks said. “I’ve just lost a lot of offense, and now I’m playing with freshmen up top.” Junior midfielder Emma Honis has led West Orange High’s attack this season, scoring a record seven goals in one game against Evans and averaging about a goal per game, Banks said. And though Honis and her teammates scored enough goals to win all six of their district games — with only two goals against, both in a 3-2 win at Dr. Phillips — they have not won a game this season outside the district, going 0-6-1. “Our youth has just a lack of experience that has hurt us,” Banks said. “Also, we have twice as many road games as home games, and that’s definitely hurt us. Although we beat Apopka at Apopka and we beat Dr. Phillips at Dr. Phillips, sometimes those games are easier to get up for, and honestly, I’ve experimented with our formation in our non-(district) games, and so I’ve definitely coached us out of a

few games, but in preparation for trying to figure out the best team we can take to districts.” Despite the Warriors getting outplayed in most of those games, the results were slightly skewed based on this tinkering, he said. Regardless, he believes his team is not where it must be, as it was outscored 10-3 on a three-game losing streak going into the winter break. “We definitely have a lot of work to do in a short amount of time before the break,” Banks said. “And I’m not sure sitting out that first (playoff) round is going to be beneficial.” But Banks is grateful to enter the break with no major injuries to his team, healthier than it has ever been during his tenure. This way, the team can spend it refocusing and harnessing the

energy and determination it had early this season, he said. “It has to start with taking care of business in the district tournament so that we get as favorable a matchup in that first round of regionals,” Banks said. “We want to go in against the lower seed — the second seed — in the first round of regionals, not taking on the (Class 5A District 3) champion.” That would be Oviedo, a perennial power ranked fourth in the nation. But even before districts and a possible rematch with Dr. Phillips in that final, Banks has two games in the first week of January to get his Warriors back on track.
