YOUR TOWN St. Luke’s women raise $37,000 The United Methodist Women of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church raised more than $37,000 at the 34th annual Holiday Bazaar. More than 14 specialty shops with handmade fall and holiday crafts were set up to resemble a Christmas market. Homemade pickles and baked goods, along with antique and decorator items, were offered to shoppers. The funds raised will be used to support local, state and international missions. If you would like to become involved with this fundraising group/bazaar, would like more information about the mission donations or have holiday donations, send an email to UMW@ st.lukes.org or call (407) 876-4991 and leave a message for UMW.

Earlier this fall, the foundation donated a WeatherBug Lightning Alert System to the school, and it was officially activated during a short ceremony Dec. 12 at the school’s South Campus. “We’ve had the WeatherBug (application on our phones) but
never had the lighting detection,” said Luanne Lumpkins, director of advancement at Foundation Academy. “The app on your phone sends alerts, but the warning system is far better, because you could lay your phone down or you walk away (from your phone) or have it on silent. So it’s helped a lot.” The Jesse Watlington Memorial Foundation was created by SEE FOUNDATION PAGE 4

And sometimes Moore, herself, finds it strange to be in front of a camera posing in her Mrs. Windermere tiara or doing oncamera interviews. But the biggest advantage of her crown is the publicity and attention it gives to her charity — The Gift of Life. Moore officially founded The Gift of Life — a nonprofit organization that supports premature babies and their families — in 2013. The decision to follow this path came after giving birth in 2009 to her son, Kaleb, who was born 13 weeks early weighing 1 pound, 10 ounces. He was discharged five months later weighing 10 pounds, 1 ounce. IT BEGAN WITH COOKIES
“I was afraid to get attached because I didn’t know if he was going to make it or not,” Moore said. “But the nurses here at Florida Hospital were great; they encouraged me. They said, ‘You just have to have faith.’ And that’s what I did: I had faith that he was going to make it. Of course, I didn’t know the long journey afterward when we got home, but we managed to survive, and we’re here.” The experience shaped the following years significantly and led her to become actively involved in the preemie community. Moore already has her hands full — as she currently works as a legal nurse and a wedding planner, and
“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”
is pursuing a doctoral degree in nursing. But between it all, she dedicates her time to providing emotional support for parents with babies in the neonatal intensive-care unit. It began with a few cookies, which soon evolved into care packages for when a premature baby is admitted into the neonatal intensive care unit and subsequently discharged. “We started by delivering cookies to the neonatal intensive care unit and to the nurses,” Moore said. “And then we saw a need in the families. They were here during the holidays, and it’s a really hard time to be here during the holidays, because you don’t get to go home, and you might have other children. It’s just really a lonely time, because you want to be home, but you can’t. So we started delivering things to the families the following year.”

LITTLE PASSIONS
Moore always has had a passion for helping others and volunteering — a trait likely received from her mom who knits hats for newborns in the NICU, but she never considered launching her own charity organization before Kaleb. To unwind, Moore likes to write books. So far, she has published four children books and one adult book, with two more soon to be published. She donates a portion of the proceeds from book royalties to her charity.
com
“That’s the thing that I love to do: write,” Moore said. “But it seems like my whole focus in life has changed. I still am a nurse, but my goals have changed into making a difference in my internship for my doctorate in nursing. My goal is to create a transition program for people when they go home from the neonatal unit.” The published author also loves to dance, a hobby she began when she was just 3 years old. She stopped dancing for a while after
turning 6, but picked it back up again in high school, and again in 1995. She dances tap, jazz, ballet and salsa. “I love to dance because any frustrations I have leave,” she said. “And it helps me bring joy to someone else because they’re watching something. And it’s great exercise. Tap is my ultimate favorite.” Contact Gabby Baquero at gbaquero@orangeobserver.com

The Jesse Watlington Memorial Foundation donated a WeatherBug Lightning Alert System to Foundation Academy on Dec. 12. The system will alert students and staff if lightning is within 10 miles of the school.
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Chuck and Alda Watlington after their son, Jesse, was struck by lightning during a football practice in 2012 at a private school in Fort Myers. When Jesse was struck, the school’s portable lightning-detection system had not been turned on, and Jesse was left on the field for several minutes before CPR was performed. After four days on life support in a coma, Jesse died. To prevent any other children from getting struck by lightning in Florida, Chuck and Alda have contacted private schools from all across Florida to provide
them with appropriate lightning-detections systems. They focus strictly on private schools because public schools receive funding from the government. “They don’t want anybody else to go through what they went through,” Lumpkins said. “If certain procedures had been in place, their son would be alive today.” Foundation Academy is one of 28 schools that has received a donated WeatherBug Lightning Alert System from the foundation. Each system is installed on the roof of the school and can detect lightning within a 10-mile radius. When lightning is detected, an
alarm sounds that can be heard all across the school. It sounds similar to an alarm at a fire station, Lumpkins said. Foundation Academy was approached by the foundation several months ago and was thrilled to receive the donation. “They’re very expensive (detection systems), so it’s amazing they did this out of the goodness of their hearts,” Lumpkins said. Although the official donation ceremony wasn’t until Dec. 12, the system had been activated a few weeks beforehand and has already seen some action. Storms in November triggered the alarm and sent the students
and staff scurrying for cover. “It’s a warning for our kids,” Lumpkins said. “They do not leave; they do not go outside; they do not change classes. If they’re on the P.E. fields, they come in immediately.” And if the alarm sounds at the end of the school day, parents have to park their cars and come inside to pick up their children. At the end of the day, it’s all about staying safe. “It’s already helped us a lot,” Lumpkins said. Contact Brittany Gaines at bgaines@orangeobserver.com.

THE GROVE ORLANDO BOOGIES AT BIRTHDAY BASH
What you’re holding in your hands is the product of more than a year of planning. It’s the product of our wildest dreams — a bold step for a company that last month celebrated our 110th anniversary. Welcome, readers, to the first edition of the Windermere Observer, a sister paper of the West Orange Times & Observer, which has roots that date back to the Winter Garden Ricochet in 1905. For more than a century, our newspaper — through all its previous owners and iterations — covered the entire West Orange region with just one edition. Today, that changes. Put simply: West Orange has grown too large for one hyperlocal community newspaper. For longtime readers: this new Windermere Observer will cover Windermere, Horizon West, Dr. Phillips, Bay Hill, Gotha and MetroWest, while the West Orange Times & Observer will renew its focus on Winter Garden, Ocoee and Oakland. As the 10th newspaper owned by the Sarasota-based Observer Media Group, the Windermere Observer will strive to deliver on OMG’s slogan: “You. Your Neighbors. Your Neighborhood.”

GAME WE WON’T FORGET:
WINDERMERE PREP BOYS BASKETBALL FHSAA Class 3A State Champions Record: 27-5
The Windermere Prep boys basketball team made history for its school by winning the FHSAA Class 3A State Championship. The Lakers navigated a season full of high expectations and met them, as the team lost just five times and closed the campaign on a seven-game winning streak. Parker Davis (16.8 points per game), now at Rollins, and current seniors David Nickelberry (16.4 ppg) and Xion Golding (13 ppg) led the 2015-16 team in scoring. The Lakers were also a perfect 10-0 in district competition.
WALKIN’ IN MEMPHIS Memphis as his collegiate destination. “Going into (the visit), I felt like (Memphis) was home to me,” Nickelberry said. “(Head coach Tubby Smith) has that experience, his staff is wonderful and the players I can easily bond with — it was just an easy decision for me.”
On Sept. 20, now-senior forward David Nickelberry became more than just an integral part of Windermere Prep’s first state championship team — he became the basketball program’s highest-profile college recruit. After being courted by some of the best programs in the country, Nickelberry chose
“It was just so intense the whole way through. (When time expired) I kind of wanted to cry and I wanted to be happy — (it was) a lot of mixed emotions and it was awesome.” — Senior guard Parker Davis after winning the FHSAA Class 3A State Championship Game
Feb. 25 (FHSAA Class 3A State Championship): Windermere Prep vs. Westminster Academy The Windermere Prep Lakers trailed by as many as six points in the second half of the state-championship game, and for a moment, things looked bleak. That, though, is when the team’s “big three” of Parker Davis, David Nickelberry and Xion Golding stepped up — as they had all season. Suiting up as a varsity player for the final time, Davis scored seven of the Lakers’ final 12 points — including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:51 remaining to give Windermere Prep the lead for good — leading his team to a 62-58 victory. The other five points came by way of Golding and Nickelberry — including late free throws to seal the deal. “It was just kind of like, ‘You guys are our big-time players — make big-time plays,’” Windermere Prep coach Ben Wilson said. “And sure enough, they did.”

GAME WE WON’T FORGET:
DR. PHILLIPS FOOTBALL
FHSAA Class 8A State Runner-up Record: 12-3
For a program with such great expectations each fall, the 2016 Dr. Phillips football team finally delivered. Although the Panthers came up four points short of their ultimate goal — Dr. Phillips fell in a heartbreaker to Miami Southridge in the Class 8A State Championship, 14-10 — it would not take away from the program getting over the regional playoff barrier it had been mired in since the team last made a state semifinals in 2012. Along the way, the Panthers outscored their opponents 503179 — or 33.5 points per game to just 11.9 points per game. Dr. Phillips won nine consecutive games following a pair of regular-season losses in Weeks Four and Five to Apopka and Mainland, respectively. The Panthers’ postseason success came in spite of having not been ranked in the top-10 in Florida’s Class 8A in the final Associated Press poll.
THE CLASS OF 2017
The Dr. Phillips football team’s Class of 2017 was much hyped from the moment it arrived on campus — and justifiably so. The Panthers seniors finished with a career won-loss record of 45-9, won four consecutive district championships, went 9-4 in playoff games and took the program to its best finish since 2010. At least seven members of the graduating class figure to sign National Letters of Intent to play Division I football next fall.
RECORD-SETTERS A number of records were set by this year’s Panthers team, but perhaps the two most enduring will be the career marks set by senior defensive Robert Porcher and senior linebacker Dylan Meeks. Porcher surpassed coach Rodney Wells’ own record of career sacks, setting the new record at 33. Meeks, despite missing most of the season due to an injury, still managed to secure the career tackles record with 443.

Dec. 2 (FHSAA Class 8A State Semifinal: Dr. Phillips at Seminole) Regulation wasn’t enough. Neither was one overtime. In the end, it took two overtimes, but a field goal by Sterling Stockwell and a missed one by the kicker for host Seminole High was the difference as the Panthers secured the 37-34 win to advance back to the state championship game for the first time since 2010. Dr. Phillips had trailed by 11 at halftime before mounting its comeback, though Seminole would still force overtime after the Panthers had taken a second-half lead.

by Cypress Bay. Perhaps most impressive, though, is that the girls lacrosse team — despite being on its third head coach in as many years — found a way to make a third consecutive state semifinal appearance. “I think it speaks to the talent on the team, most importantly,” said Chip Carbiener, a longtime
assistant with the program who took over as head coach prior to the 2016 campaign. “Maybe people will start to realize we’re doing something right here. Not a lot of teams have gone to three final fours in a row. I’m really proud of the girls.” The collective excellence of the three teams, paired with Olympia’s other sports, earned

the school’s athletics programs fourth place overall in the state in Class 8A in the final standings for this school year’s FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards. Olympia was awarded 108.5 points for a combination of how its boys and girls sports teams placed in FHSAA State Series competition.
April 23 (FHSAA Girls Lacrosse Third-Round Play-In: Olympia vs. Lake Highland Prep): As one of the most important sequences of her career unfolded, Ashley Matthews knew what was about to happen. With under 25 seconds to play in the FHSAA Third Round Play-In Game April 23 and the Titans knotted up with the Highlanders at 1212, Ashley Matthews’ sister, Brittney Matthews, broke free and sprinted up the field. “I knew the defender was going to go (toward Brittney), and I knew she was going to pass it,” Matthews said. Ashley Matthews’ shot sailed into the back of the net. After the final 16 seconds of game time had ticked away, the bench for the Titans cleared to celebrate a 13-12 win and a third consecutive trip to the FHSAA Final Four.

It was a really good spring to be a female athlete at Olympia High in 2016. Although a state championship eluded the Titans, two teams — girls water polo and girls tennis — brought home state runner-up hardware and the girls lacrosse team represented the school at the FHSAA Final Four. For the water polo team, the state final appearance was a first — and especially impressive for a public school in Orlando in a sport dominated by private schools in South Florida. Led by then-senior Arianna Beltrame, the tennis team made it all the way to the state championship match, where it was defeated
