Couple launches watch brand CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Time flies when you’re having fun. His company, Climer Watches, is on track to give prestige watch brands such as Rolex and Citizen a run for their money. It’s run by Climer and his girlfriend, Stephanie Griffith, both Winter Garden natives. As a high-schooler, Climer often bought cheap watches on Amazon and was disappointed with the quality. But higherquality watches never were affordable. “I’ve always had an entrepreneur mindset and always wanted to start a watch business, so this is really my first go at it,” he said. “One time, I saw my uncle’s watch, and it was a really nice expensive Rolex, and I was blown away by how beautiful it was. But most people can’t afford that type of watch. We wanted to find a creative, high-quality watch we could sell at a medial cost.” Griffith also dreamed of one day owning a small business but never had a solid idea as to what she wanted to sell. When the two started dating and combined their ideas, strengths and weaknesses, Climer Watches was born. It officially launched Nov. 4. Climer has a background in web and graphic design. He designs the watches, edits photos, creates graphics and manages the website. Griffith, an accountant, takes care of the finances. Climer set out to create watches that would appeal to all demographics. He and Griffith designed one watch case and three different bands. The goldaccented case design is minimalistic and classic, and patrons have a choice of either a black or brown leather band or a gold mesh band. Each watch is engraved with “Winter Garden” on the back — a nod to the company’s and the couple’s hometown. Climer sends the watch designs to a manufacturer, which produces and assembles them. Prices currently range from $55 to $60. But running a business takes a lot of time, which presents a
leased pulpit at Next Community Church, is ready for his church’s next chapter — a new year in a new location. Emmaus Church is moving its operation to the Garden Theatre in downtown Winter Garden, and the first church service there will be at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 8. “The first sermon will be on Passover, and Jesus is the Passover lamb,” Netzorg said. “I think the first sermon will go well with our name.” Netzorg chose the name Emmaus for his church because it parallels the story of Jesus’s walk to Emmaus following his rise from the dead. Jesus walked with two followers from Jerusalem but didn’t reveal who he was until they broke bread together in Emmaus. “He walks with us in our lives and then reveals himself to us and

challenge for both. Climer works and goes to school full time, and Griffith also works full time. They then have to put time into filling orders, maintaining the website and social media and more. But even though they’re business partners, they’re a couple first. “We have to make sure we’re a couple as well and not just business partners,” Griffith said. “Some people bike together, some people paint together. We make watches together. It’s good quality time for us.” It all becomes worth it when the orders filter in. Already, the pair has sold out of and restocked the gold mesh watch, their bestseller. Their family and friends have been faithful supporters thus far, but seeing orders from unfamiliar names come in is thrilling. “When we get orders come in from random customers or friends of friends, we write a customized thank you to each person,” Climer said. “Often, small businesses can struggle online when they’re not personal enough. People love that charm of service. We both used to work in the service industry, so we like to add a little note that says thank you for your business.”
Before sending the watches out, they inspect each one to be sure they’re sending out a product that is up to their standards, free of defects. Each watch is set to Winter Garden time, another way to be sure the inner parts are moving and working correctly. Now that they’re building a customer base, the plan is to continue to add more cases, band designs and colors, and increase production. Climer wants to add products that cater to those in the market for sports and luxury watches, as well as keep prices affordable for all markets. Eventually the inventory might expand to include wrist jewelry. Climer and Griffith also have considered selling their products in one of the local shops. And even though much of the thrill comes from seeing their hard work pay off as the orders are received, the best part of the business is being in it together. “We work well together. I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else,” Griffith said.

Emmaus Church has about 80 members, and Netzorg wants to see that number grow. He felt this was the opportunity for that after Alauna Friskics, from the Garden Theatre, approached him about holding church services there. The idea of offering morning services intrigued Netzorg; while at the Next campus, Emmaus had to meet in the evening because of a conflict with Next’s services. “We are a small church, and the

So we ended up telling them yes.” In June, the church started a fundraising campaign called Answer the Call — a play on the theater term “curtain call” — to be able to purchase items like sound equipment and children’s furniture. More than $18,000 was raised in less than six months. “We’re thrilled to be downtown,” Netzorg said. “We feel like it’s a big responsibility, as well, to be (a) visible church in the theater right in the middle of Plant Street. We love that theater.” Once the church gets settled in its new location, it will concentrate on growing its congregation and outreach. Members already attend youth camps and mission trips and participate in community service, and those will continue. Netzorg said he has all this new sound equipment and would like to increase the size of his church band, which currently has just a handful of musicians. Originally from South Florida, Netzorg worked in the surf business before moving to Central Florida in 1992 to enter the seminary. Contact Amy Quesinberry Rhode at aqrhode@orangeobserver.com.

GAME(S) WE WONT FORGET:
WEST ORANGE HIGH SOFTBALL
FHSAA Class 9A State Champions Record: 30-1
The theme for the West Orange High softball team this spring was “#finish,” after the team endured a disappointing end to the season in 2015 — and did they ever. A stout defense and stellar pitching paired with an underrated and speedy offense guided the Warriors to a near-perfect record and the program’s first state title since 1994. During the season, West Orange allowed just 42 runs — or 1.4 runs per game — while scoring 277 — or 8.9 points per game. In the district tournament, regional playoffs and state final four, the Warriors combined to outscore their opponents 52-3. The season ended with a 6-0 victory over Tampa’s Alonso High May 7 at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach. Following the season, ace junior pitcher Lauren Mathis was named Florida’s Miss Softball by
the Florida Dairy Farmers and the same organization named head coach Todd LaNeave its coach of the year. MATHIS’ BIG SEASON
Lauren Mathis, a University of Georgia commit, was recognized as Florida’s Miss Softball for posting 25 wins and an astonishing 0.15 ERA. The West Orange pitcher struck out 272 batters this season over just 138 innings, allowing only 36 hits and three earned runs.
“You imagine (winning a state championship) and you think about it all the time. You come out here and fight for it and it just feels unreal — I still can’t believe it right now.” — Jade Caraway, after winning the FHSAA Class 9A State Championship Game
April 29 (Regional Finals): West Orange at Spruce Creek April 26 (Regional Semifinals): Lake Brantley at West Orange Considering how the Warriors breezed through the state tournament in Vero Beach, the state semifinals and state finals are memorable more for the end result than for the games, themselves. The two games West Orange played to get there, though — now those were games we won’t soon forget. Lauren Mathis pitched a complete-game shutout in the Class 9A, Region 1 Final April 29 — besting a nearperfect outing from Spruce Creek pitcher Ashley Appell — pairing with a two-run single by Lexie Blair in the sixth inning to give the Warriors (28-1) a 2-0 win over host Spruce Creek. One game earlier, in the regional semifinals, Maggie Wheless singled in Kalie Romig to give West Orange a walk-off 2-1 victory against Lake Brantley.
GAME WE WON’T FORGET:
2
WEST ORANGE BASEBALL
FHSAA Class 9A State Semifinalist Record: 27-3
A strong senior class of what coach Jesse Marlo liked to call “program guys” helped lead the West Orange baseball program to its first appearance in the state final four. Though the Warriors fell in a 3-2 thriller to Stoneman Douglas High in the state semifinals in Fort Myers, it did not offset a
defining season for the program. West Orange carried a big stick all spring, belting 28 home runs — a program record — and 75 doubles, averaging 7.8 runs per game. The Warriors’ victory over Orange City’s University High in the regional championship marked the first time in four tries the program had advanced past the regional final round. ENRIGHT’S RISE
A year before West Orange’s Kole Enright had been taken by the Texas Rangers in the third-
round of this summer’s MLB Draft, he had his standing scholarship offer from Coastal Carolina pulled, and he was not even a regular starter for the Warriors. Things sure did change quickly. Enright hit .427 in the spring season with a whopping 18 extrabase hits, including 13 doubles, one triple and four home runs. The power surge from the talented third baseman got the attention of scouts around baseball, and Enright is currently working his way through the Rangers’ minor league system.
April 20 (District Semifinals): West Orange vs. Olympia Before West Orange could make its historic run, it first had to get out of the district tournament. Standing in the Warriors’ way were the rival Olympia Titans — and did they ever give them a run for their money. Although the Warriors had beat up on the Titans in the regular season, Olympia had taken a 3-2 lead in the top half of the final inning on a two-run single by Jackson Campbell — putting West Orange’s dream season in jeopardy. Luckily, in the bottom of the final inning, Ethan Jones doubled in the tying run and then the team’s “Mr. Clutch” — Gerry Brown — singled in the game-winning run before being mobbed by his teammates.

GAME WE WON’T FORGET:
OCOEE FOOTBALL Class 7A, District 4 Champions Record: 7-4
Ben Bullock came to Ocoee High to turn the program around as its head coach, but even he probably didn’t expect it would happen as soon as it did. In just Bullock’s second season leading the program, the Knights went 5-0 in Class 7A, District 4 and won the program’s first district title. Along the way, Ocoee notched signature wins against heavilyfavored Hagerty and the rival West Orange Warriors — all after the Knights started the season 0-2. Ocoee was rewarded for its breakout season by being able to play its first playoff game on its home field Nov. 11 — an eventual loss to Bartram Trail, a seasoned playoff program. Along the way to their district championship, the Knights outscored opponents in 7A-4 20659.
“It just means everything to us — I can’t put it into words right now.”
FUN FACT
Ocoee’s win over Lake Minneola Oct. 27 gave the Knights their sixth win of the season at the time. With last year’s team finishing at 6-4, that means that — for the first time in the history of the modern Ocoee High — the football team has finished with a winning record for consecutive seasons.

Nov. 4 (West Orange at Ocoee): Given the respective records of West Orange — 2-7 — and Ocoee — 6-3 — entering the annual rivalry game for “The Shield” in the final week of the regular season, it was sort of expected the Knights would regain the trophy for the first time since 2009. What wasn’t expected is the game that delivered that result. Ocoee led 28-0 at halftime, but a 23-point swing in favor of the Warriors changed the momentum of the game. In fact, West Orange found itself with the opportunity to kick a field goal to win the game, down 31-29, with 30 seconds remaining. That kick would be just wide, giving the Knights another signature win in a season full of them.
