Year in Pictures

Hey, 2020: Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!

Believe it or not, 2020 wasn’t all masks and social isolation! We revisit some of our favorite images of the year. 3-14.

YOUR TOWN STUDENTS COLLECT MONEY FOR FOOD BANK Second Harvest Food Bank has received more than $10,000 thanks to students at two schools: Summerlake Elementary, in Winter Garden, and Hunters Creek Middle. The goal at Summerlake was $1,000, but students and teachers exceeded that amount and then some. Instead of stopping at $1,000, the school collected $8,500 in one week. Some students even emptied their piggy banks for the cause.

Paws for a cause Thanks to the generosity of her friends and family, along with Driftwood Market in Winter Garden, 3-year-old Lorelai Wilber is another step closer to the service dog she needs. STORY ON PAGE 4.

Walker was Winter Garden mayor from 1933 to 1939. In that time, he brought $250,000 and many jobs to the city. AMY QUESINBERRY COMMUNITY EDITOR

In the 1930s, the city of Winter Garden was so broke that at one point, the remaining money in the treasury would either cover pay-

roll or keep the streetlights turned on — but not both. One man made it his mission to lead the city out of the financial slump by bringing in much-needed dollars and jobs to the small West Orange County municipality. George Walker, a World War I veteran, hesitated when he was asked to run for mayor of Winter Garden during the Great Depression. He was content being a husband and father, managing SEE FOUNDATION PAGE 2

Foundation honors a Winter Garden legend his citrus groves and running his business, Walker Electric Co., in downtown Winter Garden. He agreed to run, and after being elected mayor, he applied for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. The New Deal was a series of programs, public-works projects, financial reforms and regulations designed to boost financially failing cities across the United States. The Works Progress Administration, in 1935, was “an ambitious employment and infrastructure program” that enhanced communities with civic projects and provided jobs to millions of Americans. Jim Crescitelli, operations and program director with the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation, sat down with Walker’s granddaughte rs, Ly n n Wright and

Amy Bekemeyer, for a Facebook Live session Nov. 23. They discussed old images from the WGHF archives and shared Walker’s legacy in Winter Garden. “You could apply and get hundreds of thousands of dollars to revamp your city,” Crescitelli said. “He got the program right away, and projects came to this town like you wouldn’t believe.” Walker obtained more than $250,000 in federal aid for his projects, many of which were along the shores of Lake Apopka. The lake’s shoreline was undesirable before the WPA projects made their debut. There was nowhere to dock or put in boats to take advantage of the large-mouth bass that filled the waters. Wright said her grandfather and several other businessmen got together to create drawings to be submitted via telegraph for approval. “I remember our grandmother telling both of us Franklin Cappleman … and Granddad sat there at the kitchen table and drew what the fire station

would look like, and they sent it off and got the money for it,” Wright said. When the projects were funded, residents began seeing changes in the city — and especially by the lake — and were eager to try out the new amenities in the Winter Garden Recreational Park. Through this program, Walker built a popular waterfront destination with a pier, swimming pool, yacht basins, boathouses, a seawall and a 12-acre tourist camp named Trailer City. All of these projects remain except for the boathouses, which were razed in 1980. The current pier is one of several that replaced the original, which burned down in 1961. The pool, later renamed Farnsworth Pool, was connected by two wells that provided 100,000 gallons of fresh water flowing through the pool every 24 hours. “That pool was the hottest spot to go to in the summer,” Wright said. “All the moms would drop us off, and there was a little store … they had all the little bubble gums and candies, and it was the best day ever.”

There also were tiki huts by the yacht basin for families and friends wanting to enjoy a picnic by the lake. To the east, Trailer City was established as “temporary housing for well-heeled travelers who came to Winter Garden to spend money on Plant Street in the shops and go to the restaurants,” Crescitelli said. “And now it’s permanent.” Public structures were built near the lake, too: a community center for small gatherings and a larger city auditorium, later renamed Little Hall and Tanner Auditorium (now Tanner Hall). Walker also built a fire station (now SoBo Art Gallery on South Boyd Street), a city hall building (on downtown Plant Street) and a sports complex (on Park Avenue) named Walker Field in his honor. “Granddad loved baseball,” Wright said. “We’ve always been told Granddad loved Mamma, he loved baseball and he loved his grandkids. … Even on his lunch break, he would be on the fields.” An avid sportsman, Walker was the director of the Lake-Orange

County semi-pro baseball league and served as the manager of the Winter Garden League in 1924. OUTSIDE POLITICS

Walker, a native of Savannah, came to Winter Garden with his wife, Mattie, in 1919. In the following year, he opened Walker Electric Company and Appliance Store on Plant Street in the space now occupied by Attic Door. He also was active in civic affairs as a member of the First Baptist Church of Winter Garden and the Lions and Rotary clubs. “She was his biggest cheerleader,” Wright said of her grandmother. After his death in 1955 at age 61, she remained in their home on South Boyd Street until her death in 1989. “Neither Amy nor I were alive when Granddad Walker passed, and we sit here as though we walked, talked, knew him, hugged him, ate with him — because she made sure that his grandchildren knew exactly who he was,” Wright said.

Fight for Lorelai

“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.” Friedrich Hayek

n many ways, Lorelai Wilber is a typical 3-year-old girl. She is a happy child who is always smiling and laughing. She loves playing with her baby dolls and especially enjoys swimming and climbing. She also is incredibly unique: She was diagnosed with autism and is one of more than 2,500 people worldwide diagnosed with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome.

FINDING A DIAGNOSIS

Phelan-McDermid Syndrome is a rare genetic condition caused by a deletion or variation of the terminal end of chromosome 22 in the 22q13 region, or a disease-causing variant of the SHANK3 gene. Lorelai also is diagnosed with autism. According to the PhelanMcDermid Syndrome Foundation, it is estimated that 1% of people with autism have PMS. “Lorelai was born absolutely perfect,” said her mother, Devin Wilber. “The doctor kept saying she was perfect, she gained weight well, she nursed well. At about 14 months, she had a verbal regression and then just kind of kept going backward from there — stopped speaking, stopped interacting — and everybody kept telling me, ‘Oh, she’s fine, she’s fine.’ So we reached out to a couple different programs to see if they could have her tested for autism at about 15 months.” The Orlando family went through Florida State University’s First Words Project, which gave them a red-flag report. They took that to Early Steps for another report, which they brought to Lorelai’s pediatrician. Finally, they were referred to a developmental pediatrician, from whom Lorelai officially received a diagnosis of autism in February 2019. “Then we realized that she kept having gains and losses,” Wilber said. “We ended up going to a neurologist to see if she was having seizures. We did a 24-hour EEG, we did an MRI, and then we went to a geneticist.” In September, Lorelai received the PMS diagnosis. Each person is different, but people with PMS may experience things like low muscle tone, gastrointestinal issues, seizures, intellectual dis-

abilities and the inability to communicate verbally. “It was shocking, because a lot of people for a long time had told us that they didn’t think it was genetic, so we kind of got blindsided,” Wilber said. “It was a little shocking and actually kind of scary, because you don’t know what the future holds for your child. You just want your child to be safe and happy.” A lot of children with autism like to run off, Wilber said, so her family is always focused on Lorelai’s safety and knowing where she is at all times. “She will climb a fence, she will run out a door, and if she does get away then we won’t be able to call her back,” Wilber said. “Given the chance, she would run and run and run and never come back. We were getting really nervous.” That was when Wilber and her husband began looking into getting a service dog for Lorelai — but not just any service dog. 4 PAWS FOR ABILITY

The Wilbers found 4 Paws for Ability, an Ohio-based nonprofit that places service dogs with children with disabilities and veterans who have lost use of limbs or hearing. 4 Paws offers a three-unit system — the child, dog and handler — in which the dog can do things such as track the child or be tethered to them to ensure their safety. Because Lorelai is nonverbal, Wilber said, the dog could serve as a social bridge to help her make friends. And when she gets anxious, the dog would be able to give her deep-pressure sensory input. However, it costs between $40,000 and $60,000 to raise and fully train one of these dogs.

4 PAWS FOR LORELAI The average cost to breed, train and raise a 4 Paws for Ability service dog is between $40,000 and $60,000, and the Wilber family has been responsible for raising $17,000 of it. Although they’ve hit their fundraising goal for the dog itself, they will continue to fundraise to cover expenses associated with traveling to Ohio to receive and learn to work with the dog when it is ready. To donate to Lorelai’s MightyCause page, visit bit.ly/38aZoAU. To learn more about 4 Paws for Ability, visit 4pawsforability.com. For more on PhelanMcDermid Syndrome, visit pmsf.org.

Recipients must raise a portion of that before breeding and training — which can take two-and-onehalf-years — can begin. Wilber began fundraising with T-shirts for the cause, which raised the first $7,000 needed. Then, on Giving Tuesday this year, she decided to share Lorelai’s story and her need for this dog again. “I was like, ‘You know what, I’m just going to put it out there. I know it’s so close to the holidays, but I’m just going to do it for Giving Tuesday,’” she said. “I think we raised about $8,000 that day with people just sharing her story and donating. … It just happened so quickly. I really, truly expected it to take forever.” Lorelai’s grandmother, Jodi Acevedo, played a special part in

the process, too. Acevedo owns her own watercolor business, Whimsical Watercolor, and is one of the artisans at Driftwood Market in Winter Garden. On Dec. 12, Acevedo was at the market selling her work to help raise money for Lorelai’s dog. Additionally, Driftwood Market donated a percentage of its sales that day to Lorelai’s cause and also took donations, and the Winter Garden community answered the call. Between Giving Tuesday and the Driftwood Market fundraiser, the Wilbers were able to reach their fundraising goal for Lorelai’s new service dog. Although it will be another couple of years before the dog is ready, they are ecstatic to be able to help their daughter in this way. “I was so panicked for so long,” Wilber said. “I was like, ‘Oh no, this is going to take forever ... the fact that it’s happened so quickly — and the community has been so amazing about it and has really rallied behind us and been excited to help Lorelai — is just more than we’ve ever expected. … It’s the beginning of some normalcy. We’ve done so much to change our world to keep Lorelai safe.” When it comes down to the long journey, Wilber says it is worth it to ensure safety and security for her daughter. She added that Lorelai has taught her so much about life and being a stronger person. “Honestly, I never knew being broken down could make me feel so strong,” Wilber said. “It’s feeling like you don’t know where to go and you don’t know how to make your baby better, but she’s made me a stronger person. If I don’t fight for her, who’s going to?”

2020 YEAR IN SPORTS TROY HERRING SPORTS EDITOR

W

ell, this has been a wildly weird year, hasn’t it? I remember starting my 2020 by knocking something off of my bucket list — covering Alabama’s shellacking of Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. The next thing I know, I’m standing in the midst of a sports desert with nothing to quench my thirst for athletics. As I was combing through the thousands of sports photos I took this year, the reality of just how truly bizarre this sports year set in. In those early months, things were great. I covered incredible district basketball tourneys in February — which produced one of my favorite shots of Zoe Sedo holding up the district trophy after the Foundation Academy girls team won districts — and then I shot the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March. The joys of those moment still stick out — it was the calm before the COVID-19 storm. We had all heard about it, but let’s be honest: Most of us — including myself — figured it would come and go. We were wrong. A day after I covered Foundation’s baseball game against Legacy Charter, I took a minute to chat with my friend and former Eagles

baseball coach Jack Chambless about how things were going, and I remember him talking about the uncertainty of the times. His words rang true, because the following day — Friday, March 13 — Orange County Public Schools announced it would be closing one week beyond spring break. What followed was chaos, and the end of the spring sports season. I remember speaking with high school seniors after the news broke and how devastating it was for them to lose their last year of high school sports. For some, they already had played their last game and didn’t even know it. I also spoke with juniors who were losing out on one of the most important years of their athletic careers; that third high school season is when college recruiting really begins. With high school sports done and no Little League to be played, my journey into the sports desert commenced. To add to the pain, a month later, tragedy struck in West Orange. Ocoee football standout Dexter Rentz — who had just signed to play at the University of Louisville — was shot and killed Saturday, April 25. If there was a low point, it was this. But despite having to watch my sports world implode, there were SEE PAGE 16

many moments of brilliant silver linings of a community rallying around one another. On numerous occasions I documented runners such as Liliana Umpierre, Birhanu Van Der Riet and Mary Surprenant who, despite being stuck at home, made the most out of their time by doing the thing they loved: running. For Umpierre, it was running a marathon out and around Winter Garden after the Tokyo Marathon was canceled, while Surprenant ran her own Kessel Run Challenge half-marathon. Then there were others like Van Der Riet, who decided to run a full-blown marathon in — get this — his own backyard. These and the others stories I wrote about athletes finding a way to still enjoy their sports were among the highlights of my year. Even during a time of complete uncertainty, these folks kept going. And there were other moments of accomplishments, too, including Dr. Phillips’ football standout, Ledger Hatch, getting an offer from Cornell University — handing him offers at all eight Ivy League schools — and the birth of a new travel softball organization, Divergent, founded by a couple of locals looking to help girls develop their game. bought some golf clubs and somehow managed to get my friend Thomas Lightbody to teach me how to play golf for a column series. For those who didn’t check that out, it was the equivalent of teaching Forrest Gump to read. The clouds began to part a smidgen in August when discussion about high school athletics coming back. Soon, I was diving into a fall season that kept up the 2020 tradition of being extremely weird. Seasons were shortened, masks were worn, and restrictions were put into place. But I didn’t mind at all — at least it was something. I watched first-year head coach Mike Granato lead his West Orange football team to a playoff win after years of anguish, and I saw Foundation have its best football season ever. Right now, we are in the throes of the winter sports season, which means I’m frantically running around trying to cover multiple sports at the 10 schools in our coverage area. With that said, please, for the love of the Ghost of Bear Bryant — or whatever sports gods you hold dear — do your part in helping to get rid of COVID-19, because the world needs you and, on a much more insignificant note, because I’m tired of writing stories about these “unprecedented times.”
