Skyward takes flight in OCPS HANNAH SWAYZE NEWS EDITOR
Beginning this school year, parents and students will have a new way to view student information. This fall, Orange County Public Schools will shift from the old online student information system, Progress Book, to a new system called Skyward. Not only will parents and students still have access to the student’s attendance and grades, but also the system will give a new look to things such as class schedules, progress reports, reports cards and letters. “The biggest difference is that Skyward is a more comprehensive, one-stop shop for parents,” OCPS officials said. The greatest benefit of Skyward, according to OCPS officials, is that it provides parents with a more comprehensive picture of the students’ progress in class. Skyward shows details of test scores and the progress of
students’ grades on each assignment. Parents also will have access to graduation requirements, academic history, disciplinary records, weighted and unweighted GPAs and other student information. OCPS officials said Skyward also is more secure and is used in more than 30 school districts in Florida— and more than 1,000 around the world. The new system will feature automated integration with Canvas, which will connect the two, automatically updating grades from Canvas assignments. West Orange High School Principal William Floyd has been using Progress Book for many years and has been able to get into Skyward and explore a little bit. He said the new system seemed intuitive and believes it will make student information access more unified. “I’m an old dog, so learning new tricks is a little more difficult for me, but I’m thankful for our

community, because it’s going to make things easier for them,” Floyd said. The district will continue to use Canvas, School Messenger and School Pay. Parents will be able to access
Skyward through LaunchPad to set up a username and password. To stay up-to-date with the latest information regarding Skyward, or to access further instructions on how to use the system, visit ocps.net/skyward.

his fall, the Castleview Dragons and Water Spring Otters are joining the Horizon West community. The two new elementary schools also are a welcome sight for the existing schools they are relieving. Castleview Elementary offers relief to Bay Lake and Sand Lake elementary schools, while Water Spring Elementary is helping to offload crowding at Independence and Keene’s Crossing elementary schools. Parents, district staff and members of the community have now watched the new schools going from groundbreaking to grand opening — and with the 2019-20 school year kicking off in just a couple of weeks, it’s all about finishing touches and introducing the community to the staff and facilities. CASTLEVIEW ELEMENTARY Aptly named because of its proximity to Walt Disney World Resort, Castleview Elementary is located at 9131 Taborfield Ave., Orlando. The Dragons will be led this year by Principal Dr. Julie Helton. Helton has worked for OCPS for 21 years, working her way up from elementary-school teacher to the district level. She served as an assistant principal at the high-school level before taking the helm as principal of Winegard Elementary and then Eccleston Elementary. Castleview will be the third elementary school at which she has served as principal. “I’ve always wanted to be able to open a new school and put my mark on the culture from the beginning,” Helton said. “I think it’s a great challenge and a great

honor to be able to hire the entire staff and to work with them to make something jell and make things great for the community that you’re in. I think this area is very interesting because of where it is — next to the theme parks — and very few people in the world can say that they go to, or work at, a school that’s right near Disney or one of the major theme parks.” Castleview staff got to move into the building in mid-July, and teachers are in the process of moving into their classrooms and setting up for planning days. “We want to make the opening as smooth as possible and make the kids coming from different places feel like this is a new home for them,” she said. Also unique about Castleview is the house system that staff is implementing. Much like in the Harry Potter books, each staff member and student will be sorted into one of four houses — Loyalty, Chivalry, Valor or Wisdom. Students will learn about the character traits that go with their houses, and they’ll work together throughout the year to earn the “House Cup” by earning points for things like attendance or showing good character.
“Everyone is excited, because it’s new and we get to form the culture and the way that we will be Castleview together as a family,” Helton said. “We’ll get to form that from Day 1.” WATER SPRING ELEMENTARY The Otters are off to a good start, with Principal Amy Klaber and Assistant Principal Matthew Hendricks at the helm, and there are many fun events and experiences planned for students and families already. Klaber has been with OCPS for 20 years. She started as a music teacher and worked her way up to administration. Most of her experience is with elementary schools — although she does have experience with the middle- and high-school levels — and came from Union Park Elementary to lead the Otters. Hendricks has been in education since 2005 and began his career teaching middle school in Osceola County. After a few years, he moved to Horizon West and taught at Keene’s Crossing Elementary before switching to the administrative level. He served the last two years as assistant principal at Orange Center Elementary.
Both are eager to get the school year started and work with the parents, families, teachers and students to create a community culture at Water Spring. “This is not Amy Klaber’s school,” Klaber said. “I’m the facilitator for a community and the vision they see for their school. This will truly be a place where we’re all coming together to support our future — our children.” Now that it’s time to move in and gear up for Water Spring’s inaugural school year, it’s also time to begin fostering the school’s culture. “The most exciting piece is how you’re bringing the actual brick and mortar to life,” Klaber said. “Yes, (with) every building you build you’ll have some the same hurdles and new, exciting pieces, but it’s (about) how the building breathes. When you get to start meeting those key players — parents in the community who (have been) excited about having this come online for so long — we get to hear what kids and parents and teachers say about their current situations, what they love and what they wish, and we get to take those ideas sand bring them to life.”

Horizon West Hornets take flight Horizon West Middle School opens this school year. The start of a school year often means new beginnings for students, and in some cases, brandnew schools. Horizon West Middle School will be welcoming students for the first time when it opens Aug. 12, at 8200 Tattant Blvd., Windermere. The mascot is the hornet, and the school colors are black, yellow gold and royal blue. At the helm is Michelle Thomas, a 19-year veteran of Orange County Public Schools who most recently served as principal at Dillard Street Elementary for two-and-one-half years.
“I’m truly excited,” Thomas said. “It’s just a beautiful, gorgeous school. I’m super excited for the students to see it (and) to really build our own culture here and establish some great traditions … that we’ve been working on. I’ve gotten a lot of input from our student government body.” The school capacity is 1,200 and already has a projected enrollment of 1,280. The campus comprises four primary buildings — a three-story classroom building, an administration building, a multi-purpose cafeteria and gymnasium — that have a gross floor area of 181,896 square feet. The campus sits on 25.4 acres. Additionally,
10 portables will be installed at the school. However, not all of them are anticipated to be needed immediately, said Lauren Roth, senior manager of facilities communications with Orange County Public Schools. Other campus facilities and amenities include a media center, hard courts, joint-learning classrooms, a softball field, a soccer field and track, as well as art and music labs. Classrooms also come equipped with enhanced technology such as computers and interactive touchscreen panels. “All of our middle schools have joint-learning areas that are flexible in that multiple groups can come together and
do projects,” Roth said. “All of our middle schools are one to one, so each student will get their own, personal (digital) device.” In terms of classes, Thomas said Horizon West Mniddle will offer Career Technical Education — classes that give students the opportunity to earn college-level certification in television production, digital informational technology

and STEM. The school also will offer a wide selection of electives such as guitar, orchestra and even dance. “Another program we have is dance (as an elective),” Thomas said. “A lot of the schools don’t offer dance, but we do offer dance in lieu of P.E. (Physical Education), so I have several students who are taking dance. We’re going to try and make a
dance studio.” Roth added that security measures for new schools are taken into consideration as early as the start of construction. “Security is (built) into these schools from the ground up,” Roth said. “They incorporate cameras, fencing, a single secured entrance, as well as the presence of school resource officers. Those are kind of the
main four elements that we make sure every school has, and that’s absolutely part of this school.” Horizon West Middle originally was scheduled to open in 2022, but the opening date moved to 2020 and then to 2019. Roth said the district shortened the timeline because of the intense need; Horizon West Middle relieves the overcrowded Bridgewater Middle School. “What happened in this case
was that the opening date for the school was shifted as part of the annual evaluation of the 10-year Capital Improvement Plan, which is a fluid document that is updated once a year,” Roth said. “Horizon West Middle was moved up as part of that process because data showed a need for the school to open sooner than the original timeline.”
