men’s and women’s locker rooms, six new Har-Tru tennis courts, a new resort-style pool complex that overlooks the 18th fairway and Lake Siena, stateof-the-art fitness center and multiple dining venues and meeting spaces. As for the Tuscan-inspired setting itself, let’s just say Bella Collina is an “out-of-this world experience.” At least that’s one way to describe the picturesque cobblestone driveway that leads you to the award-winning $100-million clubhouse, lavishly appointed with dramatic barrel ceilings, intricate stonework custom crafted from imported Italian experts, and a labyrinth of eye-pleasing plazas, fountains, terraces and woodwork truly reminiscent of Old World architecture found in the heart of Tuscany. And to think we hadn’t even made it to the first tee yet! As it turned out, the par-72, 7,594-yard golf course is equally as spectacular. Set amidst live oaks and more cypress trees in the peaceful pristine setting of Montverde, the rare Faldo-designed golf course befits the clubhouse with its elevated tees, wide fairways, rolling hills and variety of shots.
By Scott Kauffman Orlando is known for being the tourism mecca of the world. Theme-park magic notwithstanding, many tourists have been flocking to Central Florida for more than just Mickey Mouse and his popular theme-park neighbors. The other major yearround attraction: golf. Indeed, with more than 150 courses within the greater Orlando area and home to hundreds of the game’s top instructors, academies and amateur and professional players, Orlando can arguably lay claim to the title, “Golf Capital of the World.” For local residents, not only do we get to enjoy the best of both entertainment worlds, but we have the good fortune to live it on a daily basis. And when it comes to playing golf, the plethora of choices are truly limitless – featuring everything from world-class golf resorts to upscale dailyfee courses to acclaimed municipal layouts and exclusive private clubs. For avid golfers seeking the ultimate in private
club amenities – without the five-figure initiation deposit usually associated with these types of communities – a growing newcomer on the scene is the Club at Bella Collina. Situated on the outskirts of Orlando in the peaceful rolling hills of south Lake County, this private golf and lakefront community is one of the country’s most luxurious destinations. That’s quickly evident at Bella Collina’s gated entrance where one is treated to ancient oak trees and tall slender Italian cypress trees that frame a stunning view of Lake Siena, a private 350-acre spring-fed lake in the center of the community. Then, there’s the timeless architecture tastefully laid out across 1,900 acres, highlighted by Bella Collina’s 75,000-square-foot Italianate clubhouse that sits atop one of Florida’s highest points. This extraordinary Tuscan-like landscape is why so many feel as though they’ve truly escaped to the most scenic hillside region in Italy. But this is actually a prestigious new community taking shape
in Orlando, combining the best of private resortstyle amenities and lakefront living. While this nascent luxury community is growing its residential base, Bella Collina is offering an extremely enticing opportunity to be a member of an ultra-luxe golf club at a fraction of the cost. For instance, the club currently offers invitational family sports memberships that start at $400 per month and family golf memberships at $600 per month, including complimentary golf with no cart fees, unlimited use of the practice facility and driving range, climate-controlled bag storage, reduced guest rates and free handicap service. To further incentive prospective members, Bella Collina is waiving the $40,000 and $80,000 initiation fees normally tied to real-estate purchases for these same sports and golf memberships, and only requiring 1-year minimum contracts. In exchange, invitational members are treated to a place that features a critically acclaimed golf course designed by Sir Nick Faldo, well-appointed
The layout actually sprawls across the western edge of the development, rising to heights of more than 180 feet above sea level, incorporating lush forested valleys, dramatic dunes and sweeping vistas of Orlando’s downtown skyline in the horizon and Florida’s third-largest lake, 30,000-acre Lake Apopka that seems to flow for miles beyond the horizon. As one recent golfer put it, the stunning views alone are worth the price of admission (nonmember green fees start at $100 in the peak winter months). On a recent late afternoon, nearby resident and invitational membership Jim Thomaselli came out to play a quick round with the youngest of his four kids. “(Bella Collina’s) the best deal you can get in this area from a golf course perspective,” Thomaselli said. “Obviously everybody knows it’s a great layout. And it’s a great clubhouse. That goes without saying. You can be an individual golf member and pay a monthly fee of $400 and go hit unlimited balls if you want. You can waste that on buckets at some other places. From a value perspective, there’s nothing like it.” Scott Kauffman is a former Staff Writer for USA Today, The Orlando Sentinel and Golfweek. Three keys to a soaring drive By Andrew Noble Certified Personal Trainer Owner of Smart Fitness andrew@gosmartfitness.com
You’re at the driving range. The day is perfect. A few clouds, but clear as can be. You pull your favorite club out of your favorite bag, ready to unleash a monster shot that everyone can see. You line it up just right, cock back the mighty club and swing only to see your ball go straight through the grass. You feel a tweak in your back. Uh oh! It’s time to go back to the drawing board.
221860
At Smart Fitness in Ocoee, we pride ourselves on knowing how to help you get your swing back by building a customized program that starts by assessing your needs through various functional movement screens. This high-end evaluation allows us to build a strength training program to help you take your game to the next level. By analyzing the way your body moves, we can quickly identify reactions and imbalances to help optimize your golf game! There are three areas to look at when analyzing your golf game that you might not think about: 1. Stability. Establishing a powerful core, rectus abdominus, para spinal muscles and
deep transverse abdominus are essential for a powerful swing. As you know, the power from your golf swing does not come from your arms, but rather a solid, stable base that you can use to propel your torso forward with accuracy and precision. Essentially this starts with your feet and works all the way up through your shoulders and BAM out through the head of your driver. 2. Resistance Training. Working on a highlevel, resistance training program as part of your overall training program is very important. By pushing and moving heavy weights you improve strength and generate faster clubhead speeds. What does this mean for your game? Hitting further more consistently without injury. 3. Play Injury Free. Now that you have improved your body for the game, its time to maintain. Using techniques such as self myofascial release (foam rolling), AIS (active isolated stretching) and trigger point release you will be armed with an arsenal of tools to keep hitting the long ball for years to come. Now you line up at the driving range, bring your mighty club back and send it soaring past the 300 yard mark. Congratulations! You just got smarter with your fitness! Four!

GOLF TIP:
Dial in your speed on the greens by Ian Mellor, Lead Coach at MMG Performance imellor@mmgperformance.com
We often hear golf is about doing the simple things correctly over and over again. To me having control over your speed on the greens is one of these so called ‘simple’ things. Here is a short process to be used in practice or preparing to play that if used on a regular basis should help you not only control your speed but your green reading at the same time. 1) Develop a ‘toe to toe’ stroke - when you arrive to the putting green roughly swinging the putter from big toe to big on your feet and roll 3 putts on a relatively flat spot. Each swing should ‘feel’ consistent with the last, continue until you can group the balls tightly. You will over time begin to assess green speed against benchmarks of how far this ‘toe to toe’ stroke goes for you on the flat part of the green. Not using a hole will free up your movement and it is important to watch the ball all the way until it stops. Watching the ball allows the brain to digest what just happened and you are adding to the memory bank allowing your brain to recognize patterns for future experiences on the green. 2) Once you are comfortable grouping the balls tightly with a ‘toe to toe’ stroke progress to longer strokes and different slopes. Uphill, downhill, left to right, right to left. Make it as fun and challenging as possible attempting to keep the balls grouped tightly. Still all the while having not hit a single putt to a hole remembering to watch the entire roll of the ball. Have fun with it and enjoy!

Athletics scholarships now available for Division I college athletes While the NCAA defined a full scholarship in the past as covering tuition and fees, room, board and course-related books, Division I college athletes now can receive athletics scholarships that provide funds to help pay the full costs of attending college, such as travel and other expenses. The 65 schools in the Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern conferences approved the rule in January 2015, and since then it has been adopted by other Division I schools and conferences. Most student-athletes who receive athletics scholarships receive an amount covering a portion of these costs. According to the NCAA, only about two percent of high school athletes are awarded athletics scholarships to compete in college. For more information contact:
Brendan Ryan
brendan@golfplacementservices.com www. golfplacementservices.com 8159 Enchantment Drive Windermere, Fl 34786 407-724-7333
The following, by rule, are the amount of golf scholarships allowed per each recruiting class: • Men’s Golf (8.1 percent of United States high school golfers play college golf; 12.2 percent of male college golfers are foreign students) • NCAA DI: 4.5 (2.0 percent of high school golfers play at this level) NCAA DII: 3.6 NAIA: 5 NJCAA: 8 • Women’s Golf (9.2 percent of United States high school golfers play college golf; 15.8 percent of female college golfers are foreign students) • NCAA DI: 6 (3.1 percent of high school golfers play at this level) NCAA DII: 5.4 NAIA: 5 NJCAA: 8
*Source: http://www.scholarshipstats.com/golf.htm
Golf is an equivalency sport for NCAA scholarship purposes, so partial scholarships
can be awarded to meet the limit per school. For example, an NCAA Division I school can award 9 male golfers each a 1/2 scholarship and still meet the limit of 4.5 per school. Consequently, some athletes receive full scholarships, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Fully funded is technically defined as having the ability to offer the full amount of scholarship under NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA rules. To illustrate the Santa Clara women’s golf team is Division 1; however, its athletic budget only allows it to offer one full scholarship — despite NCAA Division I rules allowing it to offer up to six scholarships per recruiting class. According to Forbes, the national average cost of attending a four-year public college is over $28,000 per year, and the average cost of attending a four-year private college is now over $59,000. Conversely, according to http://www. scholarshipstats.com/golf.htm, the following are the average scholarships, per player, for
men’s and women’s golf: • Men’s Division I: $15,060 (with a high of $24,018) • Men’s Division II: $6,079 • Men’s NAIA: $6,850 • Men’s NJCAA: $1,892 • Women’s Division I: $16,062 (with a high of $39,100) • Women’s Division II: $7,496 • Women’s NAIA: $7,219 • Women’s NJCAA: $2,275 So with the average cost of a four-year public college being close to $30,000, a Division I male or female golfer who can get at least a 50 percent athletic scholarship is doing well. As the data shows, not a lot of full scholarships are given out in college golf — especially in men’s golf. To illustrate UNLV recently signed a top 315 WAGR to a 75 percent scholarship — with the opportunity to get a full ride based on academics — because the coach would rather have more money left to sign another recruit, as opposed to giving out a full athletic scholarship.
Golfino USA opens their 2nd location FL in 2014, and the newest addition is the first Outlet here in Orlando. As a golfer, style is part of the game and there are so many options available out there and fashions change annually. However from a construction quality standpoint, sometimes things can be questioned and the durability or the athletic fit could be an issue especially for better players that need to move and while maintaining a comfortable core temperature. The Golfino line clearly meets and exceeds those common issues by using amazingly breathable materials and extremely strong stitching. The quality is apparent to the look and feel immediately and the styles are modern yet timeless in the simplicity suitable for any time on or away from the course.
Lisa and John Hurley were in town on Nov 7th, 2016 at Golfino USA where they hosted a grand opening party at their Orlando Premium International Outlet location.
