ADVERSITY OVERCOME
The Class of 2023’s four years of high school coincided with all the trials and tribulations related to COVID-19. Its members endured virtual learning, masks and social distancing. While lesser classes might have faltered, this one rolled with it all, adapted and came out even stronger.

Unity through adversity “ NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
AMANDA MACHAMER
The class of 2023. On the surface, it seems we’re like any other graduating class — desperate to graduate and live it up in college. However, taking a closer look would reveal the uniqueness that we possess. We are unlike any that come before us; we have grown up in some of the most isolating conditions while also trying to figure out who we are and what we want to do with our lives. We’ve become more active members of our society, opening our eyes to realworld problems and making plans for change. Whether it’s a global pandemic or political unrest, the Class of 2023 has faced and will face an ever-changing atmosphere mere steps into adulthood.
Not only did the pandemic bring an abrupt end to the Class of 2023’s freshman year, but it withheld the next two years, too. Seniors did not experience a “typical” school year until this year.
Ashlee Plavnick, a senior at Dr. Phillips High School, was one of the many to experience this change. She gives insight into her struggles with adapting to the virtual environment of her education and the lingering effects it has left her with.
“It completely threw off what it was like to be in high school,” she
said. “I stayed home all my sophomore year and used a face mask for 90% of my junior year. I feel like my time in high school was a blur and that I earned my education from behind a computer.”
Plavnick continues by describing her efforts to make up for the lost time spent at home.
“I put my all into this year, academically, socially and emotionally, almost burning myself out,” she said. “I tried to make up for all the time I had lost in my previous years to make the most out of my high school experience.”
Despite the unorthodox educational situation that students had to learn in, Plavnick sees the unity it has brought among her peers.
“I was unable to do all the things I looked forward to as a freshman and didn’t truly get to experience high school,” sh said. “I think that’s what separates us from all the other classes while also bringing our class together.”
In recent years, politics has taken hold in students’ lives like never before. Protests, typically viewed from a distance, have made their way into our schools, specifically in schools stretching across the entirety of Florida. At Dr. Phillips High School, the Gender Sexuality Alliance has made steps to bring awareness to The Parental Rights in Education Bill. Vice President of GSA Katerina
Carlson, illustrates the importance of young people speaking out in politics.
“We’re the ones it’s impacting,” she said. “If a bill or law is passed, we’re the ones who will be affected in the long run. Older generations need to leave the world a better place for those to come, whether that includes expanding rights or stopping climate change.”
With most of the Class of 2023 entering the voting pool this year, being exposed to politics regarding their immediate learning environment has influenced the number of participants.
Carlson backs up this stronger support for politics by explaining that “this year’s seniors have done so much for the GSA. We had three separate protests against the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill. There must have been a couple of hundred kids out in the courtyard waving flags and signs chanting, ‘We say gay,’ over and over to make their voices heard.”
The Class of 2023. I hope your vision of us, however positive or negative at first, has become clearer. Our desire for change and perseverance in the face of seclusion has set us apart from any other graduating class; we are jumping into a world of unknowns. What is known to us is what we want out of that world.
“You have experienced many challenges and changes throughout your high school experience. You have worked hard and persevered successfully to get to this point. Take advantage of what the future holds for you. Use what you have learned and go forth into the world. Dr. Phillips High School opened your mind to a world of possibilities. Now open your mind to the impossible. I am honored and proud to have been your principal. Always remember: You are ‘Never Less than the Best.’”

VALEDICTORIAN’S SPEECH
LUCAS PARDINI GOMES
E aí galera. Buenas noches a todos. Hello everyone. Before I begin, I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who has had a profound impact on my life. My family and my friends are the most important things in my life, they are true treasures beyond value. Words cannot express how grateful I am for all of the support they’ve given me throughout these years in helping shape me into the person I am today. I would also like to thank my teachers and the administration for embracing the challenge and helping build this school from the ground up, giving it an identity, even in the midst of a pandemic. (So I think these wonderful people deserve a round of applause). Class of 2023: We’ve made it (whether you believe it or not). Throughout these past four years, we have been faced with so much adversity — whether it was the global pandemic, having to relocate to another school or watching Mr. Jackson stand on the roof for no apparent reason. Why don’t we take a moment to reflect on what we’ve learned along the way?

Let’s cherish the memories we’ve made and the friendships we’ve formed throughout these years. Let’s appreciate the love and support of our families, friends and teachers who have helped us get here today. This is not the end of the journey, rather the beginning of something extraordinary. Extraordinary only if we’re willing to pursue our dreams. Each one of us has a unique ability and passion, and it’s up to us to make the best of it through hard work and determination. Steve Jobs once said, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach the destination.”
I cannot express in words how honored and privileged I am to be standing here before you as the inaugural Horizon Class of 2023 valedictorian and to have the opportunity to represent not only the Brazilian but the Latino community, as well. Our community in Winter Garden grows with each passing day, and although many of you may be facing hardships regarding school or in your personal life, just know that there is time and we are here to support you.
There is a Pitbull quote, which I believe resonates with this moment. He said, “This for everybody going through tough times. Believe me — been there, done that. But every day above ground is a great day, remember that (Dali!).”
Only those who are close to me know of the effort I’ve put in through the years to be standing today. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little kid — to be able to attend my own graduation. But I would have never thought that I would be the one delivering the speech. To be a valedictorian is a special privilege that few are able to obtain. But just because I was honored with this achievement does not inherently mean that I’m better than anyone. There isn’t anything about me that makes me special or different. In fact, there are many people sitting in this room who are just as deserving of this award.
What truly matters at the end of the day, Class of 2023, is the person you decide to become. Years from now, no one will remember what occurred in high school. What will be remembered, though, is the person you turned out to be.
Although our chapter in high school has come to an end and we leave adolescence behind, I urge you all to go forth with confidence and courage. The world is waiting for us, and I have no doubt that we will make it a better place. Continue “Elevating the Pursuit,” Class of 2023, and I hope to see you all on the Horizon.

The ones who started it all “ NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
SHAY SOTTO, ANANYA MISRA, TANNER KRAMER, MARINA MASSILON AND JOSIAH THOMAS
The Horizon High Class of 2023 is often characterized by the word “first.” We are the first to win a district championship, the first to showcase a musical and the first to walk the stage at graduation.
Being the first for Horizon High School is a privilege, but it didn’t come easy. Through sacrifice, hard work and resilience, the foundation of Horizon was constructed.
The inaugural Class of 2023 is distinct because of its upbringing in new beginnings through countless opportunities. We truly have expressed what it means to “Elevate the Pursuit.”
Starting off, whether it was clubs, athletics or performing arts, the opportunities to get involved seemed limitless. Shay Sotto, the founder of Environmental Club at Horizon, said “I never would have imagined creating a club at my previous school, Windermere, but it felt right at Horizon.”
Our school has surpassed all expectations for our extracurricular programs.
The Science Olympiad team received two first-place awards at the Florida Regional Competition, rare for a new school. Additionally, HHS’ Student Government Association has been awarded with the National Gold Council of Excellence Award from the National Student Council and won a Gold Medallion Medal at the annual FASC conference. With the program being only two years old, it is an honor to receive these titles.
Ananya Misra, the senior SGA VP of
Academics officer at Horizon, is proud of Horizon High School’s SGA program which “has done tremendous work connecting the community while learning to be an effective hub for student change.”
The Class of 2023 tries to embody what it means to truly be the first by setting the bar high by taking risks to achieve excellence. There are more than 45 clubs at HHS, making it extremely accessible to join various outlets of interest.
The Class of 2023 is well known for establishing traditions. When opening a new school, there were not established cliques or ties to friend groups. Sure, some of us knew others from previous schools, but Horizon forced students to start fresh when creating friendships. It was a melting pot of new people. This provided us with a unique opportunity to establish the culture and community of Horizon High School.
“Being a culture-setter was a unique and special opportunity,” Tanner Kramer, a senior at Horizon, said. “ As the first class, (we had to) frame what it means to be a Horizon Hawk.”
The Class of 2023 strives to “Elevate the Pursuit” and set the bar high, so everyone is “looking to the Horizon.” Through the myriad achievements the Class of 2023 has been awarded, traditions such as striving for excellence are born.
“Being a two-year starter for Horizon’s football program, we were proud to receive the state champions award for the highest GPA,” Josiah Thomas said. “Also, being a part of the HHS band called the Sound of Horizon, we exceeded expectations with two straight superior performances for
concert and marching band MPA, which is an amazing accomplishment for a new school.”
Moreover, the opportunity of being able to work alongside Horizon High School’s staff and faculty helped establish the fundamental values of our school also makes the Class of 2023 unique. With the unconditional support from our teachers, counselors and administration, we developed effective relationships to help spread our wings. The Class of 2023 emphasized what it means to be a Horizon Hawk by cultivating positive energy around our school. These traits help expand upon what it means to “shine.” We believe each student and staffulty member plays a crucial part in making HHS such an inclusive entity.
“Being able to work with our school staffulty help our school to effectively grow and set up an admirable legacy has been a memorable gift,” Marina Massilon said. “I believe that we, the Class of 2023, successfully executed this task throughout all of the trials and tribulations thrown our way.”
The inaugural class of 2023 is special in so many ways but most distinctly through the fabrication of the standards: “Elevating the Pursuit.”
The colors, purple and orange, represent the alluring hue of a sunset full of hope. That in which Horizon High can be an emblem for striving to be excellent. Whether it is the various accomplishments, lively climate or integrated relationships, the inaugural Class of 2023 exemplifies new beginnings for Horizon High School. There are so many great things yet to come, but it is important to remember the people who started it all.
“The Class of 2023 is an incredibly resilient group of students; you have had an unprecedented high school experience. A normal ninth-grade year was interrupted by the pandemic. Due to COVID-19, your 10th-grade year was a hybrid year. Some students returned to school, while others stayed home for virtual learning; nothing was normal. With half of your high school experience completed, you were charged with opening a new school, and you were going to be Horizon Hawks. As 11th-graders, you had no seniors to guide you, no traditions to follow, and you had to create every experience that would establish our identity as a school. Now, as the first senior class of Horizon High School, am proud to say that this class has more than persevered, you chose to #ElevateThePursuit through the constant drum beat of change to be our first graduating class. And because of that, I am confident that each of you will have incredible opportunities on the Horizon.”

Family.
That’s the one word that can be used to describe the first graduating class of Lake Buena Vista High School.
“It’s a great community,” senior Andres Romero said. “It’s all about taking care of each other and communication. They listen to you, and you listen to them, and you are never going to feel left out. LBV brings in people from other countries, it brings all those cultures and (merges) them all together.”
After two years in the making, Viper Nation will see its first seniors graduate and will send them off into the world for them to pursue their dreams.
“It’s always a challenge when you open a brand-new high school and those students have to start something brand new,” English teacher Michael Kellen said. “Sometimes, you get resistance, and sometimes (the students) welcome it with open arms. … I would say with this graduating class … they really wanted to be here and try to build a new culture and a new set of traditions. … This group really stood out to me because they were really wanting to be here and excited to create something new.”
One thing is true about LBV, this senior class did struggle along the way these four years of high school experience were not what could be called traditional.
“There’s no doubt this group is unique when you really think about the chal-
lenges from COVID-19,” Kellen said. “When they were freshmen in high school is when everything shut down, and then the sophomore year … was the year they could stay home if they wanted to or they could come to school with masks. It was really pretty difficult for them when you think about how split that experience was because a lot of them had to stay home and they were virtual classes through a webcam.
“I think one thing that really sets this group apart in a lot of ways is that they came into high school under normal circumstances, and then the pandemic hit and that kind of changed the rest of their high-school experience,” Kellen said.
“Because this year would have been the most ‘normal’ high school year for them because of the pandemic, so when you really consider everything that they faced in terms of a traditional high-school experience, they’ve really overcome a lot to graduate and establish a new school and on top of that, deal with COVID-19.”
By being part of a brand-new student body that was a combination — during its first days, weeks and months — of students from Freedom and Dr. Phillips, this inaugural graduating class not only filled the hallways and classrooms of LBV for the first time in history but also was given a truly critical task: to create — from scratch — the culture that will forever define Lake Buena Vista.
“The first thing that would come to mind when you think (about) Lake Buena Vista High is potential,” head football coach Joseph Rienzi said. “This area is
still growing so rapidly, and there is so much untapped potential not just in athletics, but the administration has put together a great group of teachers with rigorous classes for these kids to take that are going to prepare them for college and really let them accomplish any dreams they have whether it academically or athletically.”
However, for these seniors, the past two years have been filled with laughs, tears, fears, uncertainty and beautiful memories that will forever live in the hearts of the senior Vipers.
“It’s a huge pleasure being a part of the first Lake Buena Vista graduating class, and I feel it’s a special moment for us because they made it feel special,” Romero said. “Right now, I miss school. But, I feel like it’s just truly special, because we are never going to forget about LBV. The moments (we lived), even the rough moments. Everything is going to (stay with us), and we are bring it with us to our (future) lives and never forget that we were the first graduating class at LBV.” And to send them off, Rienzi wishes them the best of luck in pursuing their dreams but hopes they never forget that Lake Buena Vista High will always be there if they ever need help.
“I would always want to thank them for their energy and efforts and everything they did to help our program, and I want to wish them the best of luck in whatever they chose to do,” he said. “They are a great group of kids, and we love them to death here, and they know if they need anything, I’m just a phone call away.”

NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
“
A different way of thinking
The Olympia Class of 2023 is like no other in multiple ways. Our high school origins coincided with the pandemic, and this untraditional path has shaped us to be different. We think differently, view society differently, and we know we can change the world.
Since freshman year, a path of normalcy was anything but conventional for us. Our first year of high school was interrupted by a pandemic that threw our education into unconventional paths.
Whether we learned in person or virtually, we found ways to remain a close-knit group. We have overcome challenges with resilience and newfound strength.
In fact, this approach has become a pivotal theme for the Class of 2023. Just planning a successful Homecoming after Hurricane Ian demonstrates how our class has been shaped to bend with circumstances beyond our control and make the best of any situation.
With a schedule at the mercy of nature, we did not have our traditional First Friday game or our Homecoming as planned. We altered our celebrations and created a
replacement for the First Friday with a win over Dr. Phillips for the first time in 18 years.
The Class of 2023 demonstrated the compassion and caring we’ve grown to have throughout the pandemic by holding food drives to donate food for the homeless during Thanksgiving. We understand that it is a privilege to have enough to eat and a roof over our heads. We understand that society holds a responsibility to care for its members.
Our experiences shape our future leaders. This class holds a variety of leaders set to bring about needed change. Our nation’s future political activists and leaders walk with us at graduation. Our class holds journalists who will tell our true story and environmentalists who will heal our planet. This class has successfully led clubs within the Olympia community involving environmental action, female empowerment and much more to better understand what needs to be accomplished during our time on earth.
We understand the importance of educating ourselves.
Generation Z’s impact on using education as a tool of mobilization to assist communities marginalized via volunteer work is part of our fabric. We understand that knowledge is truly key, and we understand how to utilize social platforms as a method of outreach, education, and together. Our ability to lead a global movement is unmatched.
We shape the future of business, both as workers and consumers. We’ve redefined what work-life balance is and what we are willing to accept. This class understands both our worth and our boundaries as we set out into the world. Marketing changed to fit us, as we demand better from corporations and their messages.
Each dimension of Olympia’s Class of 2023 is an understood facet of humanity, including all humans. Shaped by the events we have seen unfold and endured, this class is an example of what it means to be a champion in empathy for all communities. From mentoring future seniors to fighting the status demonstrates our abilities to persevere and bring our peers to the summit.
“ NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
“I am so proud to celebrate the Olympia High School Class of 2023! This graduating class has proven how resilient they are, and I know they each have a bright future ahead. It has truly been an honor and privilege to watch them grow and share in their successes throughout their high school years. Congratulations,

I would like to first thank God for allowing me to fulfill the promise I made to my father in the eighth grade of becoming valedictorian and for all I have achieved thus far. Thank you to my father, who has always been a motivator and a prime example of what an educated African American male looks like by being my ideal role model. I am forever grateful to my mother, who instilled the importance of nothing but the best grades, especially her daily reminders of how the only “C” that should be on my report card is for “Campbell.” To my brother, Tyler: Thank you for pulling me away from academics to have our recurring discussions about Fortnite or the new Drake music that was released.

Thank you to my grandparents and godparents, who gave unconditional love to me and ensured I was constantly prepared for school and difficult personal obstacles and continuously fed (if you know me, I love to eat).
To my teachers, guidance counselor Mrs. Walker and fantastic college and career advisers Mrs. Maroth and Ms. McLeean: I am so thankful for your effort to uplift and support me throughout my time at West Orange.
Throughout high school, If there were one sentence to describe me, it would be, “Do tomorrow means due tomorrow” — my catalyst for my procrastination. I find it interesting how procrastination is ubiquitous, as many of us here today experience it — whether it’s saving an assignment for the last minute, pulling an all-nighter to cram for an exam, or waiting till the last minute to do taxes. I mean, I even procrastinated on this speech!
To the Class of 2023, if I could give you one word of advice, it would be to procrastinate. Before you let that idea solidify, let me expand my advice. I see the true beauty behind the addictive nature of procrastination, as I like to see procrastination not as laziness but rather as a deviation in our journey. Many of us are not 100% sure what the future holds for us and our life’s purpose.
Still, procrastination can lift beyond the boundaries of academics and be used as a time of personal introspection, allowing us to explore ourselves as a whole; in essence, procrastination is essential for our self-growth and future success.
The deviation of journey I mentioned previously acts as an extended path that is drawn unconventionally by procrastination that we all need to take, as we as young adults should delay and postpone our want to tackle adulthood and find out what makes us an individual by actively and engagingly spending time with ourselves away from our
The deviation of journeys promoted by procrastination highlights our innovative and creative side, even if many of us can’t draw or have artistic talent. Looking at all of my classmates, I see the definition of genetic and cultural diversity and occupational diversity, as many future doctors, teachers, lawyers, musicians, dancers and engineers are listening to this speech. I urge all of you to procrastinate on choosing your occupation — not because of your beliefs of selecting a career because it makes the most money but to stop and have more time to think, helping you all in various ways, such as gathering information before we make that next big decision. Embrace your qualities and talents and the new ones we will find on our deviation of journeys.
And lastly, The deviation of the journey has no determined duration, as we all will experience a different timeline of events in our lives and post-secondary plans. Our procrastination will underscore this statement. Therefore, I encourage you all to take your time on your nonlinear path and learn skills such as patience, understanding, humility, and self-directed dedication, all of which are important in the workforce and relate to building relationships with others you will meet in your lifetime.
I would like to share a quote from actress and activist Yara Shahidi:
“We don’t integrate; we recreate.” Class of 2023: We must reimagine the meaning of procrastination, pull it away from its negative connotation, and embrace it along with our newfound identities.
Celebrate who you are, and most importantly, celebrate this next chapter in your life that will transform society. Do not be afraid to not know what you want to do in the future. Do not be afraid to experience new things. Feel free to take off your rose-colored glasses and analyze new perspectives.
Thank you to each of you for four fantastic years at West Orange, and if there is one thing I want you to remember, it is to procrastinate and embark on your personalized journey starting now. I wish each of you the best of luck and am so proud of you.

VALEDICTORIAN’S SPEECH
Patience. Persistence. Perseverance.
KAYLA BENTON, ISABELLA WARD, KELSI-ANN BAILEY
The Class of 2023 has truly embodied these characteristics, distinguishing itself from the rest of our high school’s alumni. With these attributes, the Class of 2023 has been able to harmoniously balance between the responsibilities of home and school-life, all while being bombarded with the ripple effects of events in recent years.
Our ninth-grade year, one that would have been used for acclimation and defining our paths ahead, was interrupted. COVID-19 would cause our Spring Break to never end. The era of lockdowns and remote learning would emerge, and for many, the once clear and progressive path toward manifesting our dreams would become scrambled. What was to become of us?
What would be our next step? Is this our future?
But while we sat behind computer screens and reminisced about the good ol’ days, we learned something. It wasn’t chemistry or algebra. It was patience. With our teachers, our parents, and ourselves. Even as we progressed into our 10th-grade year, still adjusting to our new mode of learning, we were beginning to learn an important lesson: Not everything comes as expected and that in some cases, not at all. But with patience, we are able to endure through difficult times. Without learning the art
of patience, the Class of 2023 would have succumbed to hardship without realizing the confidence and creativity that follows.
At the start of sophomore year, students were still dealing with the repercussions of the pandemic with everyone starting the 2020-2021 school year with nine days of online learning.
After the first nine days, students had the option to continue the school year online or show up in-person — but wearing a mask. With COVID-19 restrictions in place, many school events — such as Homecoming, football games and Prom — were not allowed to happen or had to be modified to meet restrictions. Another year had passed without having a “normal” year of high school.
Junior year for the Class of 2023 was mostly back to normal, but it came with a few social-distancing restrictions, and some students chose to continue wearing masks. We also had Homecoming outside at SeaWorld. But not everything that has made the Class of 2023 unique involved COVID-19. School organizations took a big role in setting us apart from previous years. This year’s National Honor Society officers took it upon themselves to make the organization stand out from years before. The Vertical Raise fundraiser that was put on by NHS treasurer Sophia Maritz raised more than $50,000, making it the biggest Vertical Raise fundraiser in the state.
Additionally, NHS Vice President
Caroline Gordon was able to put on the first ever NHS Olympics. The NHS Olympics has been talked about years before, but Gordon was the first vice president to make it a reality. Each house competed in various competitions against each other, with Leadership House winning the event.
Also, this year’s graduating class of theater students have had the opportunity to do two brand new shows this year. Their fall musical, “The Prom,” was the world high school premiere of the show, and they were specifically asked to do the show by the creators of the musical. This show also was one of seven that got the honor of being a “Mainstage” show, and the students got to perform it at Morsani Hall in Tampa.
But the members of the Class of 2023 don’t only excel in the arts; they are also great athletes. West Orange brought home various wins throughout the season, but even more important are the championships won. Five teams won district championships this year — football, boys soccer, girls water polo, boys water polo and boys volleyball. Girls swimming and diving also were regional runners-up.
Yet what truly sets the West Orange Class of 2023 apart are the students. Three graduating seniors have been accepted into ivy league schools: Trenton Campbell, Taylor Graham and Zetao Wu.
This year’s valedictorian, Trenton
Campbell, and salutatorian, Emma Koehler, are both involved in the school community. Campbell is the National Beta Club president, while Koehler has played on the varsity softball and varsity bowling teams. Even through their involvement, they are both successful students, with Campbell becoming a Super Scholar — earning acceptance to both Columbia and UPenn, and Koehler receiving the West Orange Athletics Female Scholar of the year.
Another feat completed by the Class of 2023 is that three students, Chelsea Vital, Lily Douglas and Zetao Wu, received the QuestBridge scholarship. West Orange has never had three students win this scholarship in the same year. The QuestBridge scholarship allows students to attend top-ranked universities, with all tuition covered. Each student received the scholarship for a different university — with Vital going to Northwestern University, Douglas going to Washington University, and Wu going to Brown University.
As the Class of 2023 concludes its high school journey and prepares to embark on new adventures, we hope students continue to carry and cherish these qualities. Patience that has made them stronger. Persistence that has enabled them to thrive. Perseverance that has helped us to overcome obstacles. Qualities that will make the Class of 2023 a force to be reckoned with, despite our individual distances, our differences and our development.
“ NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
“The members of the West Orange Class of 2023 began their high school careers stuck at home and ended their Warrior tenure as one of the best classes to ever step foot in Warrior Country! The slow assimilation into a normal high school experience escalated with the Class of 2023 maximizing every opportunity to enjoy the traditional high school experiences such as Homecoming, prom, and athletic and arts events. Our senior Class of 2023 not only excelled in the classroom, thrived in the arts and sports, but also showcased personalities that won’t soon be forgotten. Best of luck, Class of 2023, and Warrior Country won’t be the same without you!”

NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
“As another school year draws to a close, it is important to take time to reflect on all the accomplishments we’ve achieved as a school and community. At Windermere, the phrase ‘Achieving Greatness with Honor’ is more than just a tagline; it is a core belief in all that we do. From academics and athletics to fine arts and extracurricular activities, I am proud of all you’ve accomplished both in and out of the classroom this year. As we returned to a sense of normalcy following the pandemic, was proud to see how this student body continued to build upon our great tradition of excellence while making Windermere one of the premier schools in the region.
“One of the greatest privileges as a principal is the opportunity to join you in your educational journey and watch the thousands of students each year grow as productive members of this community. Countless opportunities for success and greatness lie ahead. So challenge you now to take the knowledge you’ve acquired at Windermere and go forth. You didn’t come this far to only come this far. Take chances, push the envelope, and don’t be afraid to fail. Pele once said, ‘Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and, most of all, love of what you are doing.’ You’ve all shown you’re capable of hard work. Now go out and find the thing you love doing.
“To all my students, thank you for an amazing year. To all my seniors, may the road rise to meet you, and may the wind always be at your back, and remember, once a Wolverine, always a Wolverine. Whoop, Whoop!”

Do everything in love
ENZO SIOSON
The First Academy Class of 2023 has everything that makes a class special. As I look back at the past few years, I can see and appreciate how much this group of seniors has grown together. From going through COVID our freshman year to quite a few instances of — as so many adults have put it — “high school drama,” there have definitely been times when we doubted if we could truly enjoy our senior year together as a class.
However, at some point, every seed blossoms into a flower.
Through the investment of parents, teachers, coaches and fellow students, we have been able to see how the consistent dedication to this group of students has paid off. We have made friendships that are unshakeable and made countless memories that will last a lifetime.
To those who have never had an experience with Christianity, this may be a little hard to explain.
However, the thing that makes our class special is our faith. It’s something that binds us together in a way that nothing else can. There are so many instances where one can see this, but here are a couple.
At our senior retreat at the beginning of the year, we had an optional worship service on our
last night. We did not expect that many people to show up, but we were dead wrong. Nearly the entire class came during their free time for a time of worship that, according to some of the teachers, was unlike anything they had ever seen at our school. A class divided by cliques and friend groups saw those barriers fall in one night, and we were able to return to school as a changed group, having encountered something that meant so much more than petty differences.
Before we began our final quarter of high school, we organized a senior worship night at a classmate’s house. We had an open mic, and people just kept coming up to share what God had laid on their hearts. Whether they were at their first worship night or they had been to every one since ninth grade, we saw our classmates come to the front one by one to pour their hearts out, offering encouragement, testimony and gratitude. I can definitely say that I have never seen something like that in my life — especially from a group of highschoolers.
Fast-forward to our second-tolast day of school, when we had our senior-led chapel. I would say that this is when everything came full circle for our class. More than 20 seniors volunteered to help give a
message, sharing the impact that God has had on their lives with the rest of the school. However, probably the most special moment of that time was when some of our teachers came up to speak and shared how they have seen us come together and God work in our lives — and also how we, as a class, have impacted their lives.
There is no doubt in my mind that God is working in this class. A final example I will share is not an experience but rather about the people. Everywhere you look, you will find a student who is dedicated to their faith and genuinely cares about others. Whether it be in our student government, our academic leaders, our sports teams, our fine arts department, or simply a senior classroom you randomly walk into — our class has an incredible number of Christian leaders who have used their influence to help our class in so many ways. Our class verse for this year was 1 Corinthians 16:14: “Do everything in love.” We as a class have made our best effort to live by this, to be a class that loves, and to take that into college and beyond.
TFA seniors: You have all inspired me in so many ways. I hope as you all embark on this next adventure, you never forget everything that made this class so special.
“Class of 2023: It seems like only yesterday you entered the doors of TFA for your senior year. As you head off to college, let me challenge you to stay committed to the values that you were taught at home, your church and TFA. Remember God is your refuge, and He has a plan and purpose for each one of you. It has been a privilege to be your principal, and wait in anticipation to see what God is going to do in you and through you. Congratulations!”

Passion binds FA Class of 2023
RUBY BERTHOLE
Foundation Academy’s Class of 2023 has come quite a long way. Every student has a story, and this past school year has truly revealed the progress we’ve made as individuals and as a unit.
Being one of the seniors, I’ve noticed a certain characteristic about our class that I think sets us apart from the rest. Regardless of the variety in interests, personalities or experiences, we’ve upheld a certain energy that is eager to enhance each circumstance. Seeing how invested we’ve become in terms of specialty, school environment and one another, I’ve come to recognize just how special this senior class is.
One thing I’ve long admired about our class is the energy we’ve put into our passions. Our senior class has such a wide array of interests. On an extracurricular level, we’ve excelled in seizing both our athletic and artistic opportunities. From going the extra mile on the field to congratulating someone for a win the next day, it has been uplifting getting to witness our seniors push themselves and encourage others. As for the fine arts activities, many students in our class have challenged their skills — whether it meant spending hours mastering a painting method or going over a musical number. With all our class’ talents came impactful results, such as beating a school weightlifting record and starting a chess club. Most important,
in all of these passion-based challenges and achievements, we’ve been able to cheer each other on the whole way through.
Having to navigate through our final classes, testing and college applications together has given us the opportunity to find enthusiasm in our school. The students and teachers have grown closer than ever, and I’ve watched many students (including myself) come out of their shells and eagerly engage in classroom activities. There’s a similar atmosphere between students and administrators. Throughout the complicated process of transitioning from high school to college, we’ve gone through ups and downs together. Developing the trust to ask questions and having the comfort of knowing that our administration cares about our journey has made this experience much easier and more memorable. Leading the student body, we’ve grown closer to our lowerclassmen as mentors and friends. As we look back at where we’ve come and where we’re going, younger students have been able to learn from us and have hope for their own bright futures. Even though we’re getting ready to leave, the times that we’ve spent with our school community have brought us closer than ever.
During this final year of high school, what I think we’ve grown in the most is the spirit we have among each other. Going through two semesters of events with about 70 unique personalities was
not an easy task. With the wide range of opinions and experiences, there were bound to be interesting encounters and thought-provoking conversations. Although this was a concern for much of our class at the beginning of the year, it has become a dynamic to be embraced by the end. In the trips and exercises we’ve done, I’ve watched people I never thought would get along engage in lighthearted conversations and learn more about one another. Some groups who we joked were “sworn enemies” months ago are now hanging out outside of school together. Now that we’ve reached the end of the year, we look back at the time we’ve spent with each other with smiles and gratefulness. Out of all the aspects of life we as a class have put effort into, one of the most meaningful would be a sense of unity and understanding.
It has been quite an experience being a part of this year’s senior class. Spending the past nine months with these distinct individuals has helped me to realize just how much God is working in their lives. Observing our achievements and influence on the world around us has revealed how powerful we are together. Our willingness to challenge and motivate ourselves in various fields has shaped us into a gritty and spirited generation of seniors. As we move from Foundation Academy into the next chapter of our lives, we look forward to using this energy to explore, understand and enhance the world around us.
“Dear Seniors: What a joy it has been this year to watch you grow through your senior year! We have had such a great year — from the senior sunrise to the senior sunset. As a class, you have such unique personalities that blend together into a dynamic group of young people who are ready to take on the world. You are ambitious, wildly talented, outspoken and enthusiastic. I charge you to go out and make a difference in the world. Lean on God’s truths that you have learned here in these FA halls. You all have big plans for the future, but remember that your Father’s plans for you are always the best plans. Your Foundation Academy family will always be here cheering you on. You will forever have a place in my heart, and I will continue to pray God’s richest blessings for each one of you.”

We are America’s future
NATALIE NESMITH
The Montverde Academy Class of 2023 is unique — not only because we are a graduating class composed of students from more than 90 countries all over the world, but also because we have experienced some of the most impactful and life-altering world issues during our short four years.
In 2019, we were overjoyed to begin high school. It meant meeting new people, experiencing new environments, getting to know new bodies and going through new phases (some of which we now regret). Our excitement was swiftly deflated when COVID-19 haphazardly halted the third quarter. However, I am not writing to share a story about COVID; rather, I am here to convey why I believe the Montverde Academy Class of 2023 will change the world and how the lessons from the pandemic will aid us in doing so.
We were optimistic throughout freshman year. Whether it was new clubs to join or the opportunity to hang out with upperclassmen friends, we anticipated good things to come. On the final day of spring break, we were oblivious as we sat by the bell tower and chatted with our friends about how “nice it will be to have a lon-
ger spring break” and how “this COVID thing is only going to last two weeks maximum.” We were unaware we would not see our classmates for the remainder of the year or, in some circumstances, the following year. We did not know that the impending future was guaranteed to impact the rest of our lives, without a single year of high school being the “typical high school experience.”
As humans, we are so dependent on patterns. We want a graduation ceremony, a prom king and queen, Homecoming dances, and everything else that comes with high school. The pandemic disrupted the comfort of our routines, but we did not let it extinguish our fire. When we finally returned to school junior year, it was as if we had never been separated — yet we were very aware of the time we had lost. My classmates are the most ambitious, competitive and goal-oriented people I’ve ever met. When we arrived on campus, the need to reunite was discernible. Despite our lack of time, we achieved our own success stories through campaigns for leadership positions, club sponsorships, sports triumphs and significant contributions to the arts.
The Class of 2023 has been forced to mature far faster than previous classes. We were the first
generation to use social media in middle school and eventually learn how to deal with all forms of pressure. “We are the face of this generation,” we’ve all heard.
“We are America’s future.” We have lived through significant historical events that forced us to make judgments, form individual viewpoints and learn about issues beyond our years. We witnessed massive protests, social movements and political divides, which caught our attention, as teens drawn to social media. It is apparent today that the division in ideas that arose in 2020 generated a polarized, corrosive environment.
The difference for the Montverde Class of 2023, however, is that we did not let these issues divide us. Montverde Academy is a vastly diverse school. As a boarding school with students representing a multitude of countries, we are constantly exposed to alternative perspectives, openmindedness and backgrounds.
As we experienced these years of “choosing sides,” the Montverde Class of 2023 became closer. We did not hesitate to have honest, challenging conversations, nor were we afraid to consider different points of view.
When the other classes refer to our grade, they claim it’s full of “try-hards,” a term that is
meant as an insult. But I believe it means we will truly change the world. We have a class that has something in common: we’ve all walked through some of the same monumental experiences. We have been the only class that has been “too young to understand what is transpiring politically” yet has been thrust into the spotlight to bridge the divide in our pivotal age of learning. I feel we are the class of inspiration. We’ve witnessed how political leaders handle crises and how Montverde Academy administrators handle change, teaching all of us how to respond when things don’t go as planned. As a result, we have matured and gained a greater understanding of one another.
The uniqueness of the Montverde Academy Class of 2023 is defined by our tenacity forged from difficult life lessons learned during the pandemic, our realization that we hold the entire world in the palms of our hands and our certainty that we can change it for the better.
Senior Natalie Nesmith is president of the MVA Chapter of the National Honor Society, representative for Student Leadership Council in Head of School Leadership Institute, track representative for Arts & Athletics Leadership Committee, and team captain for cross country.
“ NOTE FROM A LEADER
routinely recognized as ‘superior’ have moved audiences and viewers through expression that not only extends boundaries but moves into new areas of creativity and innovation.
“Athletically, the class is made up of numerous national champions in basketball and track and field; state champions in soccer; and state and nationally ranked softball, volleyball and baseball teams.
“This year’s seniors were ninthgraders when they were presented with the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, many questions have surfaced about the results of the pandemic on student development and academic performance. While it will take years to identify and quantify the results associated with the pandemic, this year’s graduating class is notorious for its grit, determination and perseverance. The results have been amazing!
“The Class of 2023 at Montverde Academy is a class that has an array of exceptional students, artists and athletes. They have excelled in co-curricular programs, such as robotics, Model United Nations, EA Sports, and subject area concentrations pursuing in-depth studies and research in environmental sustainability, biomedical science, engineering, computer science, business and global perspectives. Artistically, these students who have been
“When listening to the senior speeches delivered by the Class of 2023, the common theme that defined each of these students was the resilience they needed to overcome obstacles. While the hurdles were high and the barriers obvious and prevalent in their daily lives, the response was inspiring, the courage has been uplifting, and the leadership is encouraging.
“The Montverde Academy Class of 2023 is an exceptionally talented group of students who will impact society in an awe-inspiring manner due to the fortitude portrayed in the perils associated with challenges and rigors that they have been exposed to throughout their high school experiences. They will shape the world in the most positive way! I’m sure MVA’s first graduating class from 1913 would be awed by the intelligence, poise and ambition present in this, our 110th graduating class.”

Never waste a tomorrow
Congratulations to the Class of 2023. You have achieved a major milestone in outstanding fashion. You have also reached this milestone during extraordinary times. Your first days in high school were filled with so much excitement and anticipation. Ninth grade must seem like a lifetime ago. So innocent, so full of potential and so naive as to how much your lives would change. You belong to a generation that has been marked and changed by a worldwide pandemic. Your days in high school quickly altered when you were introduced to Canvas Connect, Zoom, Work Day Wednesdays, masks and social distancing. No modern-day educational experience has been more impacted than yours. The pandemic robbed you of so much, yet you endured. You found a way to deal with all of it as if it was always part of the plan. You found a strength and creativity that allowed you to navigate the unthinkable. You pressed through and on as the world limped by.
As the world began to open, you found a way to flourish and succeed again. Your presence in the classrooms, the stages, the fields, the courts, and the courses was immediate. You returned a bit wary, but with a resolve to make every moment count. You were ready to regain everything you missed and so much more. There was a frantic nature,
PAUL VILLATICO SGA FACULTY ADVISER, ASSISTANT HIGH SCHOOL DIRECTOR, CURRENT EVENTS TEACHER
but with purpose. You had games to play, productions to perform, works of art to create, activities to plan for, and, yes, even class time to catch up on. You wanted it all. I can honestly say we have witnessed you do it all. As I type this, I sit the day after a state championship game, the haze of Lakerthon, the eve of Tanzania and Charley’s Aunt is about to go on the road to state competition. If you listed your accomplishments over the past four years, it would take pages.
I guess this is a testament to you as a class and all you have done as a Laker. This book will be a treasure throughout your life. It will anchor you back to a time and a place that will always be part of who you were and who you will be in the future. In a year, five years, twenty years, and
beyond this book will take you back to Windermere Prep! It will take you back to a cherished time in your lives. As you begin to look beyond being a Laker, there are so many more lessons and so many more moments of wisdom I wish I could pass along. As excited as I am for your graduation, I am also grasping for a bit more time. I know you are ready for what comes next, but I do wonder if I could have done more. I guess my final words of wisdom are based on tomorrow. You have so many tomorrows in front of you. So many tomorrows filled with opportunity and adventure. My final bit of wisdom is that each tomorrow also has something else within them. Every tomorrow will quickly become a yesterday. Live today, live this moment, live every moment so as to never waste a tomorrow. The regrets in life are the things you never did, and the words you never spoke. Thank you for being part of my life. Thank you for sharing your days at Windermere with me and all of your teachers. We are incredibly proud of all that you have accomplished, and we are proud of who you have become as a class and as people. We know you will have a profound impact on the world. Godspeed in all of your journeys and endeavors. Remember no matter where your paths may lead, you will always be a Laker. You will always have a home and people that care for and love you.
NOTE FROM THE HEADMASTER
“Along with the faculty and staff, I offer my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 2023. We are proud of what you have accomplished as Lakers, and we look forward to seeing all that you accomplish in the coming years. As you take on the path in front of you, we challenge you to hold true to the spirit of Virtus, Veritas, and Unitas in your endeavors. Best wishes, always.”

THE ELUSIVE CATCH
On still waters calm and deep I cast my line.
With bated breath and patient heart I wait
For that elusive catch to become mine, And I feel the tug that signals its fate. The thrill of the chase, the strike of the prey, The battle that ensues, rod bent with strain,
I finesse and guide my catch in my way,
A prize to be claimed, not wrestled in vain.
But as I feel it in with great delight, The fish slips free; it wriggles, and it flees.
My heart drops low, and all my joy takes flight
As I watch it swim away with such ease.
Alas! Such is life. Losses must be faced.
Perhaps next time my prize will be embraced.
— Kyle Dorsey
THE HOME RUN
I take the field with a bat in my hands, My eyes fixed on the pitcher’s steady glare.
The crowd’s rowdy roar echoes through the stands
As I ready myself with a quiet prayer.
The ball comes hurtling at me with great speed.
I swing with all my might; the crack resounds!
The leather sphere soars highhhh … Is it? … Indeed!
I take off running; excitement abounds!
The fielders chase the ball, but it’s too late.
It sails over the fence … a home-run hit!
My heart swells with pride; I can hardly wait
To touch each base, to celebrate a bit.
A moment of triumph, a vict’ry won, The thrill of a game-winning run is done.
— Noah Rittenberry
FOOTBALL
On fields of green, we clash with all our might
To drive the ball and conquer foe in game.
Eleven men united in one fight
To claim vict’ry and protect our team’s fame.
Clad in helmets and pads, we’re ready to go;
We charge ahead with passion and fury.
Our strategy precise, our tactics thorough, We execute each play without worry. The roar of the crowd ignites us aflame; We push and test our own limitations. As thresholds are crossed, we’re never the same.
Oh, the thrill to exceed expectations!
In this great sport, we find our brotherhood, Our strength, our courage, and … yes, our manhood.

Choice is the most powerful tool. At any point, we can change the direction of our lives by a simple choice. I challenge the Class of 2023 to make the choice to be good people and be the light that others need to help find their path!
We are so proud of all that you’ve done, and all that you will be doing. Happy graduation!
MICHAEL PEARL, OLYMPIA HIGH SCHOOL
Freshman year, you went home for Spring Break and never came back. Sophomore year, some of you never stepped foot on campus. Junior year, you wore masks. But this year, you finally got to enjoy a year of normalcy — a final year to spend with your friends and teachers here in the halls. This tumult has made you tenacious Titans. We are proud of you.
Madeleine,
We are proud of your many accomplishments and the young lady you’ve become. This is just the beginning of your success.
Love always, Mum and Dad

Not all of our days went as planned — though those are the ones we will all remember the most. We stressed, we laughed, we learned, we shared, I cried (though I am not alone) — and I loved every minute of it. I know you didn’t “choose” me, but I did choose you — and I would gladly do it again. You have been a blessing and an inspiration.
