BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!
In addition to all the hyperlocal gift ideas, our 2022 Holiday Gift Guide includes everything you need to prepare for and plan your holiday season.
ENG EDITOR & PUBLISHERPretty much the day after Hal loween, I looked out of our front door to discover the familiar soft glow of a Christmas tree twin kling in my neighbor’s living room window. Some may say — good grief! That’s too soon!
To that, I say: Hogwash!
In Florida, when our seasons are Hot and Hotter, it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to manually usher in the new season. And when it’s holiday season, it’s our duty to pull out that plastic reindeer, inflate that flattened Frosty and spread some cheer!
And so here I am — a day removed from our last hurricane (seriously, Nicole?! You witch!) — doing my part to welcome you to the most wonderful time of the year!
I am especially excited to bring to you our 2022 Holiday Gift Guide — consider it your handbook for the holiday season.
Inside, you’ll find West Orange’s official 2022 hyperlocal “wish book” — chock full of gift ideas for every person on your list. And the best thing? They’re all available right here, at one of our amazing businesses, owned by someone who lives in our community.
In addition to our physical wish book, we also have partnered with these merchants to create our first online O-Mazing Holiday Gift Guide! Check out this very special guide at bit.ly/omazing2022.
Fill out your December calendar by using our exclusive holiday cal endar (pages 16, 21 and 24), which includes events from Winter Gar den, Ocoee, Windermere, Horizon West, Dr. Phillips and beyond.
If you’re sending gifts to loved ones near and far, we have shipping deadline information (page 32). And whether you’re traveling or staying home for the holidays, be sure to check out some safety tips cour tesy of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (page 10).
We’ve also compiled an all-new list of popular holiday albums (page 25).
And last —but certainly not least — we invite you to learn about many of the local non-profit organiza tions that do such important work in our community (page 29). After all, it is the season of giving, so I encourage you to find an organiza tion that speaks to your heart and consider a donation this holiday season.
I know, I know: As you read this, we’re just one week removed from Nicole. But you know what? A little storm can’t put a damper on the holiday season in West Orange.
And starting with Light Up Windermere Friday, Nov. 18, our community will be full of holiday cheer every weekend for the rest of the year. You’ll be seeing us at many of these events, so please stop by and say hello!
From all of us from the Observer: We wish you a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
This year’s Holiday Gift Guide cover was one of the most fun covers to create to date. It started with a wild idea and ended with something that took a team to complete. In the beginning, we knew this was going to be a large undertaking but were excited to see it through. When the tunnel book concept was first presented for approval, there was a long discussion to make sure there was a realistic expectation of what this project would entail. Once the ball started rolling, it was an excit ing and creative adventure that was met with feelings of joy and a few tears.
The first step was to decide on a visual concept or scene. This not only had to capture the holiday feel we sought but also had to be structurally usable as a tun nel book. Once we settled on the winter wonderland concept, it was time to build the digital file. Each individual element of the design was painstakingly created, cut out and positioned to bring together the final scene.
Then came the process of choos ing which elements would be used on each panel of the tunnel book to create the layered effect. In the end, we had seven separate panels filled with snow covered mountains, trees, a cabin and the main focus which was the reindeer, presents and child.
With the digital design complete, it was time to create the physical
piece and prepare for the photo shoot. This required printing all seven panels, cutting them out with an X-acto knife and mounting them to foam core.
Now that we had the physical tunnel book created, we moved on to the photoshoot. This part of the process proved to be the most com plex. Our goal was to have a photo graph that captured all the details while properly representing all the handmade work that went into cre ating this cover. We played around with lighting, cameras, lenses, light boxes and positioning until we achieved our desired result.
We are thrilled with the outcome and hope that our readers enjoy it as much as we do!
Tunnel books consist of a set of pages bound with two folded concertina strips on each side and viewed through a hole in the cover. Openings in each page allow the viewer to see through the entire book to the back, and images on each page work together to create a dimensional scene inside. This type of book dates from the mid-18th century and was inspired by theatrical stage sets. Traditionally, these books were often created to commemorate special events or sold as souvenirs of tourist attractions.

Holiday decorations — while beautiful — can pose increased risk of fire in your home. Here are some tips to minimize that risk.
n When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness; a fresh tree is less of a fire hazard. The tree should be green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt should be sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles.
n Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to expose the fresh wood. This allows for better water absorption and will help to keep your tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.
n When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces, radiators or portable heaters. Place the tree out of the way of traffic, and don’t allow it to block doorways.
For those who may be traveling this holiday season, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office offers tips to reduce the possibility of your home being burglarized or vandalized while you are away.
A vacant home — or one that ap pears vacant — is an appealing target to a burglar.
Although these steps will not make your home “burglar proof,” they can make it more “burglar resistant.” Use it as a checklist prior to leaving.
A WEEK BEFORE YOU LEAVE
n Ask a neighbor to watch your home and provide them with emergency contact information.
n Arrange to have your mail held at the post office or have a trusted neighbor pick it up daily.
n Arrange to have your newspaper stopped or picked up by a neighbor.
n Make arrangements to have the lawn mowed while you’re away.
n Do not hide cash or jewelry in the home. Consider putting valuables in a safe deposit box.
n Make sure you have secured out side things such as bicycles and lawn items. Unsecured items are easy targets.
JUST BEFORE LEAVING
n Don’t advertise your trip on social media. That means waiting until you return to post photos or updates.
n Consider smart plugs to turn some of your lights on and off during the evening.
n Unplug all electrical appliances, such as the TVs, stereos, computers, toasters and microwaves to prevent damage during electrical storms.
n Have a friend park a vehicle in your driveway.
n Lock your garage door with a bar or padlock on the inside track to prevent anyone from forcing open the overhead door.
n Close all windows and sliding doors. Make sure locks are secure.
n Make sure the last person out of the house locks the door.
n Keep the stand filled with water; heated rooms can dry live trees out rapidly.
n Stay in the same room with burn ing candles; never leave them burning unattended.
n Keep candles away from things that can burn.
n Place candles out of reach of chil dren and pets.
n Keep wicks trimmed to one quarter inch.
n Remember to make sure you have working smoke alarms.
n Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certi fied for outdoor use.
n To hold lights in place, string them through hooks or insulated staples, not nails or tacks. Never pull or tug lights to remove them.
n Check all tree lights — even if you’ve just purchased them — before hang ing them on your tree. Make sure all the bulbs work and that there are no frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections.
n Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid potential shocks.
n Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.
n Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens.
n In homes with small children, take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable; keep trim mings with small removable parts out of the reach of children to avoid the child swallowing or inhaling small pieces. Avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food that may tempt a child to eat them.
n Remove all wrapping papers, bags, paper, ribbons and bows from tree and fireplace areas after gifts are opened. These items can pose suffocation and choking hazards to a small child, or can cause a fire if near flame.
n Stay alert and be aware of what’s going on around you.
n Park in a well lighted space, and be sure to lock the car, close the windows and hide shop ping bags and gifts in the trunk.
n Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay with card whenever possible.
n Don’t overburden yourself with packages. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket.
n Shopping with kids? Teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if you get sepa rated.
