erhaps it’s just my chronologically superior age, but it seems impossible that we’ve already begun the 2023 holiday season. I do not know where the rest of 2023 went, but I suppose that means we were having fun if it flew by so quickly. Seriously, it seems like we just did this! Please, don’t take that as a complaint. Indeed, this is the most wonderful time of the year. It’s a time of faith, of family, of fun. A time for gratitude, love and laughter. It’s the time when my wife and I make our two older kids (teenagers) uncomfortable as we take them to see Santa. (Mark my words: We’ll do this until they no longer live under our roof. It’s a house rule.) And for the Observer, it’s time for our annual Holiday Gift Guide — our handbook for the holiday season! Truly, this is one of my favorite publications we do every year, because we get to celebrate and show off all our fellow hyperlocal businesses and their incredible offerings in West Orange’s official “wish book.” This guide is chock full of gift ideas for every person on your list. And the best thing? They’re all available right here, at one of our amazing businesses, owned by someone who lives in our community. And no, the Amazon guy can’t deliver any of these.
In addition to all the hyperlocal gift ideas, our 2023 Holiday Gift Guide includes everything you need to prepare for and plan your holiday season. Fill out your December calendar by using our exclusive holiday calendar (pages 16, 21 and 24), which includes events from Winter Garden, Ocoee, Windermere, Horizon West, Dr. Phillips and beyond. If you’re sending gifts to loved ones near and far, we have shipping deadline information (page 25). And whether you’re traveling or staying home for the holidays, be sure to check out some safety tips courtesy of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (page 32). We also asked Four Seasons Resort Orlando Executive Chef Fabrizio Schenardi, a Winter Garden resident, to share a special holiday recipe (page 5). Make sure you let us know if you make it! And last —but certainly not least — we invite you to learn about many of the local non-profit organizations that do such important work in our community (page 29). After all, it is the season of giving. So, we can’t think of a better way to do just that than to support one of these wonderful operations. And starting with Light Up Independence Thursday, Nov. 16, our community will be full of holiday cheer every weekend for the rest of the year. You’ll be seeing us at many of these events, so please stop by and say hello! From all of us from the Observer: We wish you a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Four Season executive chef shares holiday dish The holidays are the perfect time to try something special in the kitchen. This year, we teamed up with Four Seasons Resort Orlando Executive Chef Fabrizio Schenardi, a Winter Garden resident, who chose a special dish that originates from his mother’s hometown. “This is a nice dish that is very simple to execute,” he says. “It comes from the Cuneo Provence in Piemonte, Italy, where my mother is from. This is a common dish prepared in wintertime— especially during the Christmas holiday — as an appetizer or in place of a pasta course.”
CREPES WITH LEEKS, PANCETTA AND FONTINA CHEESE
METHOD Q To prepare the crepes with leeks, pancetta and fontina cheese, start by peeling and washing the leeks and cut them into thin slices. Cut the bacon into cubes, as well.

Q Stew the leeks gently in a pan with 4 tablespoons of oil until soft. Add the pancetta, add a pinch of salt and ground pepper and continue cooking for another 5-6 minutes. Q Remove from the heat, let cool and add the cream and diced fontina, leaving 10 g aside for the gratin. Stir until the mixture is soft and homogeneous. Q Take the crepes, which you have prepared in advance, and spread a generous tablespoon of filling on each one.
thoroughly and add it to the egg and milk mixture a little at a time, stirring with a whisk to prevent lumps from forming. Q Mix until the batter is smooth and fluid. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. After resting time, heat a non-stick pan, grease it thoroughly with a knob of butter and remove excess fat with a piece of
Q Fold them in half and place them in a baking dish brushed with oil, overlapping with one another. Spread flakes of butter on the surface and sprinkle with a handful of grated fontina. Q Transfer to a preheated oven at 180 C (356 F) for 1012 minutes. The crepes with leeks, bacon and sweet fontina cheese will be ready when well au gratin on the surface. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.
paper towels. Pour in a ladle of batter. Q Tilt and rotate the pan so that it is evenly distributed. Let it cook for a few minutes over medium-low heat. With a spatula, turn the crepe over and continue cooking on the other side. It should be slightly golden. Continue until all the dough is used up, remembering to grease the pan with butter from time to time.

Plant St., Winter Garden DETAILS: The Ballards, Lessy Boy and Curleen, welcome family and friends into their Appalachian mountain home to celebrate Christmas Day. TOY DRIVE
The Christmas Carnival Dec. 16 !"10am-1pm
Gifts needed for infants to teenagers. Be part of something BIGGER!
Collecting brand new toys in original packaging Mon. - Fri. from 9am-4pm and Sat. from 8am -1pm at 611 Business Park Blvd.
At our Community Christmas Carnival kids experience an old time carnival atmosphere, playing games and winning prizes while snacking on carnival themed foods. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive on their “sleigh,” courtesy of the Winter Garden Fire Department. Children are escorted by an elf through a maze of donated toys and the elf notes what items the child is wishing for as they speak with Santa. To keep the spirit and tradition of Christmas alive, parents return after and select toys for their child using the list prepared by the elves. A community fellowship is established, and dignity is maintained. It is an amazing experience.

Holiday decorations — while beautiful — can pose increased risk of fire in your home. Here are some tips to minimize that risk. LIVE TREES Q When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness; a fresh tree is less of a fire hazard. The tree should be green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt should be sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles. Q Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to expose the fresh wood. This allows for better water absorption and will help to keep your tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard. Q When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces, radiators or portable heaters. Place the tree out of the way of traffic, and don’t allow it to block doorways. Q Keep the stand filled with water; heated rooms can dry live trees out rapidly.

CANDLES Q Stay in the same room with burning candles; never leave them burning unattended. Q Keep candles away from things that can burn. Q Place candles out of reach of children and pets. Q Keep wicks trimmed to one quarter inch. Q Remember to make sure you have working smoke alarms. LIGHTS Q Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use. Q To hold lights in place, string them through hooks or insulated staples, not nails or tacks. Never pull or tug lights to remove them. Q Check all tree lights — even if you’ve just purchased them — before hanging them on your tree. Make sure all the bulbs work and that there are no frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections. Q Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid potential shocks. Q Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.

DECORATIONS Q Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens. Q In homes with small children, take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable; keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children to avoid the child swallowing or inhaling small pieces. Avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food that may tempt a child to eat them. Q Remove all wrapping papers, bags, paper, ribbons and bows from tree and fireplace areas after gifts are opened. These items can pose suffocation and choking hazards to a small child, or can cause a fire if near flame.
TRAVEL TIPS
For those who may be traveling this holiday season, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office offers tips to reduce the possibility of your home being burglarized or vandalized while you are away. A vacant home — or one that appears vacant — is an appealing target to a burglar. Although these steps will not make your home “burglar proof,” they can make it more “burglar resistant.” Use it as a checklist prior to leaving. A WEEK BEFORE YOU LEAVE Q Ask a neighbor to watch your home and provide them with emergency contact information. Q Arrange to have your mail held at the post office or have a trusted neighbor pick it up daily. Q Arrange to have your newspaper stopped or picked up by a neighbor. Q Make arrangements to have the lawn mowed while you’re away. Q Do not hide cash or jewelry in the home. Consider putting valuables in a safe deposit box. Q Make sure you have secured outside things such as bicycles and lawn items. Unsecured items are easy targets. JUST BEFORE LEAVING Q Don’t advertise your trip on social media. That means waiting until you return to post photos or updates. Q Consider smart plugs to turn some of your lights on and off during the evening. Q Unplug all electrical appliances, such as the TVs, stereos, computers, toasters and microwaves to prevent damage during electrical storms. Q Have a friend park a vehicle in your driveway. Q Lock your garage door with a bar or padlock on the inside track to prevent anyone from forcing open the overhead door. Q Close all windows and sliding doors. Make sure locks are secure. Q Make sure the last person out of the house locks the door.
SHOPPING
Q Stay alert and be aware of what’s going on around you. Q Park in a well lighted space, and be sure to lock the car, close the windows and hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk. Q Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay with card whenever possible. Q Don’t overburden yourself with packages. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket. Q Shopping with kids? Teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if you get separated.
