11.21.24 Holiday Gift Guide

Page 1

Holiday cheer starts early, and that’s just fine with us

n my admittedly non-scientific polling of West Orange (i.e. I asked a few friends), it seems our community was ready to get the holiday season underway. Indeed, for the first time I can remember, we saw a few twinkling reindeer in our neighborhood greeting trick-ortreaters on Halloween night.

In our excitement for the Christmas season, my wife and I decided our decorations would go up early this year. And so, on Sunday, Nov. 2, I pulled the tree out of hibernation in the garage and set it up in our living room — much to the delight of our kiddos. Now, mind you, no ornaments have not been placed on its branches, and no lights are affixed to the outside of our home. But hey: It’s a start!

Some may say that’s ridiculous, even ludicrous. To them, I say, “Get over it!”

Every year, the holiday season comes and goes in a blur, so why not rev it up just a few weeks earlier?

In that spirit, the Observer is ushering in the season with our 2024 Holiday Gift Guide — our handbook for the holiday season!

This year, we’re decking the halls by showing off many of our awesome hyperlocal businesses and their incredible offerings in West Orange’s official “wish book.”

This guide is chock full of gift ideas for every person on your list. And the best thing? They’re all available right here, at a shop in our

community owned by someone who might even be your neighbor. In addition to our physical wish book, we have again partnered with these merchants to create our online O-Mazing Holiday Gift Guide! Make sure you check it out at OrangeObserver.com!

HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS

Of course, our guide also includes a plethora of information you need to make your 2024 holiday season one to remember.

Check out our exclusive calendar of holiday events (pages 24-27) and make your plans for some Christmas fun with friends and family. There are so many events right here in our communities — Winter Garden, Ocoee, Windermere, Horizon West, Dr. Phillips, Oakland and Gotha. And if that weren’t enough, we’ve even included some favorites from throughout Central Florida.

If you’re sending gifts to loved ones across the state, the country or the world, we have shipping deadline information (page 5). And whether you’re traveling or staying home for the holidays, be sure to check out some safety tips courtesy of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (page 10).

Finally, we invite you to learn about many of the local non-profit organizations that do such important work in our community (page 16). We can’t think of a better way to celebrate the season of giving than supporting one of these worthy operations.

In the coming weeks, our community will be full of holiday cheer every weekend. Our team will be present at many of these events, so if you see us, please make sure you stop by and say hello!

From all of us at the Observer: We wish you a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

HOLIDAY TIPS TO STAY SAFE

In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is easy to get caught up in the magic of the season — and perhaps forget some of the safety precautions you usually take.

Thankfully, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office offers a variety of tips to keep you and your loved ones safe this holidsay season. Furthermore, the agency also provides free, confidential Residential Security Surveys. To schedule one, call the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, (407) 254-7380.

FIRE SAFETY TIPS

Holiday decorations — while beautiful — can pose increased risk of fire in your home. Here are some tips to minimize that risk.

LIVE TREES

n When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness; a fresh tree is less of a fire hazard. The tree should be green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt should be sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles.

n Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to expose the fresh wood. This allows for better water absorption and will help to keep your tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.

n When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces, radiators or portable heaters. Place the tree out of the way of traffic, and don’t allow it to block doorways.

n Keep the stand filled with water; heated rooms can dry live trees out rapidly.

CANDLES

n Stay in the same room with burning candles; never leave them burning unattended.

n Keep candles away from things that can burn.

n Place candles out of reach of children and pets.

n Keep wicks trimmed to one quarter inch.

n Remember to make sure you have working smoke alarms.

LIGHTS

n Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use.

n To hold lights in place, string them through hooks or insulated staples, not nails or tacks. Never pull or tug lights to remove them.

n Check all tree lights — even if you’ve just purchased them — before hanging them on your tree. Make sure all the bulbs work and that there are no frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections.

n Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid potential shocks.

n Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.

DECORATIONS

n Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens.

n In homes with small children, take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable; keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children to avoid the child swallowing or inhaling small pieces. Avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food that may tempt a child to eat them.

n Remove all wrapping papers, bags, paper, ribbons and bows from tree and fireplace areas after gifts are

TRAVEL TIPS

For those who may be traveling this holiday season, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office offers tips to reduce the possibility of your home being burglarized or vandalized while you are away.

A vacant home — or one that appears vacant — is an appealing target to a burglar.

Although these steps will not make your home “burglar proof,” they can make it more “burglar resistant.” Use it as a checklist prior to leaving.

A WEEK BEFORE YOU LEAVE

n Ask a neighbor to watch your home and provide them with emergency contact information.

n Arrange to have your mail held at the post office or have a trusted neighbor pick it up daily.

n Arrange to have your newspaper stopped or picked up by a neighbor.

n Make arrangements to have the lawn mowed while you’re away.

n Do not hide cash or jewelry in the home. Consider putting valuables in a safe deposit box.

n Make sure you have secured outside things such as bicycles and lawn items. Unsecured items are easy targets.

JUST BEFORE LEAVING

n Don’t advertise your trip on social media. That means waiting until you return to post photos or updates.

n Consider smart plugs to turn some of your lights on and off during the evening.

n Unplug all electrical appliances, such as the TVs, stereos, computers, toasters and microwaves to prevent damage during electrical storms.

n Have a friend park a vehicle in your driveway.

n Lock your garage door with a bar or padlock on the inside track to prevent anyone from forcing open the overhead door.

n Close all windows and sliding doors. Make sure locks are secure.

n Make sure the last person out of the house locks the door.

SHOPPING

n Stay alert and be aware of what’s going on around you.

n Park in a well lighted space, and be sure to lock the car, close the windows and hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk.

n Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay with card whenever possible.

n Don’t overburden yourself with packages. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front

Facts About Homelessness

Most homeless individuals are not panhandlers, addicts, or persons with criminal histories. Many faced trauma contributing to their situation (loss of a child or spouse, foster care upbringing, childhood abuse, career loss due to injury, downsizing, etc.)

The fastest-growing homeless groups are seniors with inadequate or no pensions. Followed by those with disabilities outliving their caregivers, and young families who fail housing qualifications. In central Florida, a one-bedroom apartment costs $2000/month. Many require triple that income as proofmeaning an annual income of $72,000!

EVERY DOLLAR DONATED WILL BE MATCHED DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR UP TO $1,000,000.00!

Matthew’s Hope has a fantastic chance to raise $2 million by midnight on December 31st! Every dollar donated will be matched up to $1,000,000. This includes monthly donations. For example, a $100 monthly commitment means $1,200 for Matthew’s Hope.

$1 becomes $2... $1,000,000 becomes $2,000,000!

This support will greatly help us recover from pandemic debt, hurricanes, and rapid growth. Our budget for both locations is $15M, with about 1,000 visits weekly.

The Holidays are going to be upon us quickly and Matthew’s Hope always tries to provide a few new items for Christmas to each of our homeless men, women and children.

The children are comparably easier to provide for as the holidays approach so we are looking to you for help with the adults we serve by providing the following new items as gifts:

Clothing Needs (Prefer Darker Colors): Hoodies, Sweatshirts, Light Winter Jackets, Beanie Hats. Light Winter Gloves, Running/Mesh Shoes, Winter Socks, Jeans, Long sleeved T-Shirts, Ladies Undergarments, Men's Boxer Briefs

FROM THE FOUR SEASONS TO YOUR DINNER TABLE

No holiday season would be complete without the food, so they are a perfect time to add a new dish or two to your holiday traditions.

This year, we asked Fabrizio Schenardi, executive chef of Four Seasons Resort Orlando, to share one of his favorites with our readers. Schenardi chose Capa’s Datiles — bacon-wrapped dates.

This little tapas dish — made out of Medjool dates stuffed with Marcona almonds and wrapped in Nueske’s Bacon topped with Tamarind crème fraiche — offers the perfect balance between the sweetness of the dates, the freshness of the cream with the acidity of the tamarind and the nutty flavor of the almonds. All of that is fried to give it a crispy texture and finished with some fresh mint. This dish is a go-to tapas item when starting a meal.

“These are a wonderful tapas dish that make a delicious appetizer or a perfect dish for a holiday party,” Schenardi says. “The Datiles has become a favorite on the menu in Capa.”
