More than 200 riders hit the pavement for Winter Garden Wheel Works’ fifth annual Think Pink breast cancer awareness ride. Entry fees, as well as donations and sponsorships from local businesses, helped Wheel Works donate nearly $5,000 to Moffitt Cancer Center. The Bond Foundation came forward to match the Wheel Works donation to be given to UF Health Cancer Center — Orlando. Before, during and after the event, many heartwarming stories came in from all over the country in support of the rider. The shop owner, Dennis Jones, started the ride in honor of his mother, Jeanette Jones, who died from breast cancer five years ago.

Salvador Ramos takes Welch’s seat AMY QUESINBERRY RHODE COMMUNITY EDITOR

Amy Quesinberry Rhode

Pastor Scott Billue symbolically hands the keys to Next Community Church to the new pastor, Sean LaGasse.

NEXT MAN UP Pastor Scott Billue is stepping down from leadership at Next Community Church to concentrate on Matthew’s Hope. His successor is Sean LaGasse. AMY QUESINBERRY RHODE COMMUNITY EDITOR

Scott Billue is stepping down as pastor of the church he built nine years ago so he can focus on growing Matthew’s Hope, West Orange’s homeless program. He likens this decision to a parent having two children and selecting which one lives. Following months of prayer and plenty of guilty tears, Billue will deliver his last sermon as pastor of Next Community Church Sunday, Nov. 29. He is moving forward with plans to expand and strengthen the programs at Matthew’s Hope. “These past 18 months have really taken a toll on me in trying to be a decent pastor to the people of Next while also being a solid leader at the ever-growing ministry of Matthew’s Hope,” Billue wrote on Facebook. “I was overcome with anguish of the idea of letting people down.” But it was getting harder to shepherd the flock, he said. After he chose to concentrate his efforts on Matthew’s Hope, he said, “God made me comfortable and gave me peace with my decision.” Still worried about who would lead his congregation once he left, though, Billue reached out to his Christian friend Sean LaGasse, who had preached six sermons at Next when Billue was on sabbatical this summer. He remembers LaGasse telling him he fell in love with the congregation during his short time there. LaGasse was actually at a church-planting session in Jacksonville when Billue called WINTER GARDEN

“When I started Matthew’s Hope, it was going to be half a day once a week. Little did I know that five-and-ahalf years later, I’d go from socks and underwear to a greenhouse and hydroponics.” Scott Billue

him recently and said, “What if someone handed you the keys to a church?” Next has a reputation of being an outreach-driven church, and Billue didn’t want it to lose this important identity. Recently, Billue has been challenging his congregation of about 100 members to get outside the walls of the church and be of service in the community. “I realized someone needed to tell them in more action and less words,” he said. “If I’m going to ask you to do it, then I’m going to do it.” So, he has accepted his own challenge and is concentrating on that service beyond the church. MATTHEW’S HOPE

The homeless organization started nearly six years ago, when Billue and a few others began taking undergarments into the known homeless camps in Winter Garden and Ocoee. This small gesture had great impact. When the weather dropped to freezing temperatures that winter, Billue approached those living outside and offered them a warm meal and a warm place to sleep. Thus, the beginnings of what would later be called Matthew’s Hope. “When I started Matthew’s Hope, it was going to be half a day once a week,” Billue said. “Little did I know that five-and-a-half years later, I’d go from socks and underwear to a greenhouse and hydroponics.” His goal is to make the new greenhouse a learning center, a place where the homeless can be trained in hydroponics so they can seek higher-paying jobs. The structure also will quadruple the amount of produce harvested and sold to area restaurants. His plans for Matthew’s Hope include expanding the Hope Chest, located on West Plant Street, and increasing the amount of wood furniture that is refinished and sold. He would like to get more of the homeless honing their craft skills there. He wants to set up a car wash and detailing business at its own location. “We’re not trying to get people just jobs,” Billue said. “Jobs are

where you work toward a career.” WHAT’S NEXT

Billue has complete faith in LaGasse to carry out Next Community Church’s original mission of impacting the community in a positive way and feels that he will bring much-needed new energy to the church. “I see Next having a rebirth of meeting people where they’re at,” Billue said. “The gist of the church has never changed. (Sean) is the guy who will lead this new energy. He won’t just tell people to go and paint; he will be there with a brush, as well.” LaGasse is prepared for this giant leap. “Trying to step into Scott’s flip-flop prints is a big undertaking, and I think anyone would be intimidated by that role,” said LaGasse, who previously served as executive pastor of The Crossings Community Church. “I feel very confident that I will be able to step in behind him. And from a congregational perspective, it will be relatively seamless. We align very well.” Dec. 6 will be LaGasse’s first day at the pulpit. “My heart wants to speak to the hundreds of unchurched,” LaGasse said. “To find them and bring them into the community of Next and impact their lives. The things we are speaking on now really reinforce what Next is.” LaGasse and his wife of 24 years, Maria, have lived in Winter Garden for five years, and they have four children ranging in age from 14 to 20. He started HomeRun Pest Control two years ago as a way to bring in residual income that would free him up to volunteer and serve the community. The new pastor hopes to duplicate a similar financial revenue model within the church in a Monday-through-Friday forprofit format so more of the Sunday-morning tithes can be used in the community. He wants to build a drug and alcohol center and a Christian-based assistedliving center. “People will be aware of God’s presence at Next,” he said. OAKLAND Salvador Ramos, a 14-year resident of Oakland, has been appointed to replace Commissioner Willie Welch on the Oakland Town Commission. The new commissioner will finish the remainder of the term for Seat 3, which was left empty when Welch died Oct. 24. This seat — along with those of the mayor, held by Kathy Stark, and Seat 2, held by Vice Mayor Mike Satterfield — will appear on the March 8, 2016, municipal ballot. Ramos said he plans to run for reelection. He was sworn into office at the Nov. 10 commission meeting and then took his seat at the table. He said it is an honor to be chosen to serve the town. “I’ve always wanted to be part of protecting the unique charm and shaping the future of the town of Oakland, and I thought this to be an amazing opportunity God gave me to partake in,” Ramos said. He said one important challenge will be to accommodate the impending growth while keeping the town’s quaint look and feel. Ramos previously served for two-and-one-half years on the town’s Charter Review Committee. He and his wife, Marivel, moved to Oakland in 2001 and have four children: Sal Jr., 13; Camila, 11; Gustavo, 8; and Sara, 3. He has attended Mosaic Church since 2007 and is a deacon there. An upcoming project for him is to launch Mosaic Latino Church. “I am passionate about Jesus Christ, the town of Oakland and serving others,” Ramos said.

OAKLAND TRAILS

When the Oakland Trails community comes to the town of Oakland, the 108-acre development will offer two unique aspects to buyers: the option of houses or smaller bungalows and the inclusion of wastewater. All of Oakland currently is on septic tanks, and the town is working on a major sewer project.

IN OTHER NEWS n Commissioners approved a land purchase totaling $146,480 so the town can to build a relief road between Oakland Avenue and State Road 50, parallel roads running east and west. Motomassek Road has been identified as an important connecting road. The money would come from transportation impact fees. Public Works Director Mike Parker wrote in a memo to the commission: “Recent traffic studies have also shown that as the Oakland Park development continues to grow and the vacant lands along State Road 50 begin to develop, this relief road will become even more necessary.” Tubb Street is the only road in the town limits that runs north and south from Oakland Avenue to S.R. 50. On the west end of town, Oakland Avenue curves south and eventually leads to S.R. 50. To the east, Tildenville School Road is another important connector in the Winter Garden city limits.

“I’ve always wanted to be part of protecting the unique charm and shaping the future of the town of Oakland, and I thought this to be an amazing opportunity God gave me to partake in.” Commissioner Sal Ramos

The neighborhood is a step closer to development after the Oakland Town Commission approved a Planned Urban Development zoning, conceptual site plan and preliminary subdivision plat. It will be constructed north and west of the intersection of State Road 50 and Deer Island Road and south of Florida’s Turnpike off J.W. Jones Road. Meritage Homes, the developer for Oakland Trails, plans to build up to 305 dwellings on 108 acres. The layout is designed where the density of the homes on the east side and around the perimeter of the west side are more in line with the common density of the town: larger single-family home lots. The inner dwellings will be bungalow-style units on smaller lots to encourage affordability. Proposed lots will vary in size from 2,880 to 5,750 square feet. Contact Amy Quesinberry Rhode at aqrhode@wotimes.com. n An interlocal agreement with the town of Montverde was approved, and it allows the town of Oakland to provide emergency water to the Lake County municipality. Montverde had initially requested that Oakland provide all water and/or sewer service to a new development called Lake Apopka Sound, but Oakland declined. Local officials did, however, agree to provide fire flow and emergency water. Montverde will pay all costs of the interconnection project. n Town Manager Dennis Foltz asked for a consensus to investigate the possibility of buying the property at 301 N. Tubb St., adjacent to the Town Hall buildings. It would give town employees additional office and parking space. Foltz said he wants to look at the condition of the building and the purchase price. n The commission appointed resident Paul Zakhary to the Planning & Zoning Board. He is currently an alternate on the Appearance Review Board.

Principal Angela Osborne said the scorpion was worse than the crickets she ate at Palmetto Elementary.

PTO co-president Monica Kozak decided to join Dr. Osborne in the challenge.

CATHERINE SINCLAIR KERR STAFF WRITER HORIZON WEST Students at Inde-

pendence Elementary participated in a Fun Run this fall as a fundraiser for the school. They gathered Fun Run pledges for donations from their friends and family members. To encourage the students, Principal Angela Osborne vowed to eat a bug if the school community could get pledges from donors in all 50 states. The students would be allowed to choose a grasshopper, cricket or scorpion. The children took Osborne up on the challenge and found donors in all 50 states. Their delicacy of choice was the scorpion, which PTO leaders ordered from Thailand. “I tried to find a domestic scorpion because the shipping from Thailand is crazy, but they didn’t have it,” PTO co-president Christi Johanneman said. “You can order anything from the Internet,” PTO grade-level

the school’s TV broadcast channel, and students watched from their classrooms as she crunched on the arachnid. Osborne named the scorpion Johnny Jumpup to make the experience a little more personal. “It does not smell good,” Osborne said as she examined the scorpion. “It feels a little odd. Its legs are wiggly. It’s got a hole in the end of its tail.” Chants of “Eat it! Eat it! Eat it!” broke out from students and PTO members in the media center, and there was no way for her to back out. After swallowing her first bite, Osborne’s reaction could be described only as disgust. PTO co-presidents Monica Kozak and Christi Johanneman and Assistant Principal Eileen Oats helped Osborne finish her plate. The student body then went outside for an ice-pop party in celebration of reaching 95% of its fundraising goal.

lived near her and was moved by Blodgett’s kindness to the point she suggested the vigil to her community through social media. “It just seemed she made everyone smile, and there’s so much negative going on out there … and I thought this was someone we should recognize as a positive,” Maddalena-Palmer said. Maddalena-Palmer was pleasantly surprised with the large response to her idea and how the vigil came together in about two days. Those who worked with Blodgett said she was the type of person who would remember everyone’s birthday with cards and give presents to many for Christmas. “She acknowledged everyone she came in contact with, and everyone had some kind of relationship with her,” Clodie Avescat said. “You had to know her if you were here.” The cart Blodgett was pushing while she crossed the road was like a backpack but less difficult for her to transport items with, Avescat said. “She was committed to getting her job done,” co-worker Alicia Pollard said. “She loved Publix. She would even come in on her off days. We were like family to her.” Although her official title was a custodian and clerk, Shalonda Maxey said she did some of everything around the store. “If it was somebody else that passed, she would have been here,” Pollard said. Many attested to her involvement in the community, with a passion for charity and church, which she attended weekly. Suggestions have arisen for further memorialization, such as a plaque at Publix and a demarcation by the sidewalk on which she last walked. “This is a very tragic time after the loss of a Publix family member,” said Dwaine Stevens, Publix media and community relations manager. “Mena is well-loved by her fellow associates, her customers and the community, and she will be missed.” A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at New Life Worship Center, 2342 Hempel Ave., Gotha.

Ocoee Fire Rescue personnel who were at the scene told Windermere Police Chief Dave Ogden the man would have died if not for the timely help of his neighbors, led by Julia Strube, 17. “When she noticed that the subject didn’t have a pulse, was in medical distress, she called 911 and began resuscitative efforts to save his life,” Ogden said. Strube said she had learned CPR from a class in her sophomore year of high school. Paramedics took over for Strube when

they arrived and then delivered the patient to the hospital. “While the outcome is still critical, the amazing work of Julia has not gone unnoticed by our agency,” Ogden said. “Her actions by performing resuscitative efforts during a difficult, tense and uncertain situation are to be commended. Due to her selfless and quick response, the family can take comfort that every effort was made to save a life with the utmost care and compassion for their loved one. SEPT. 17

15000 block of Colonial Drive. Possession of methamphetamine. On Sept. 12, two officers were doing a foot patrol at a local motel. One officer ran a check on someone at the hotel, finding the man had an active warrant for child support. When officers began to speak with the man, he complained he wanted to change his clothes. When the man continued to request to change his clothes, the officer asked him what he had in his shorts. “Aww, come on, I don’t want to go to jail,” the man said. When the officer asked where it was, the man told the officer it was in his right front pocket. The officer removed a black leather case filled with two clear bags of methamphetamine. One of the bags also contained a glass pipe, aluminum foil, Q-tips and a lighter. OCOEE

SEPT. 27

500 block of Ocoee Apopka Road. DUI and no valid driver’s license. At 12:09 a.m. Sept. 27, a pickup drifted into a lane, nearly hitting an officer’s car and another car. An officer stopped the car and directed the driver to pull off into the grass. When asked for his identification, the driver showed officers a Guatemalan ID. When asked to cross to the other side of the street for safety reasons, the man stumbled across the street with a wide stance. Officers found nine empty Corona beer bottles in the bed of the truck, as well as a Red Bull energy drink. The driver told officers he had six beers that night. He left his job at 6 p.m., then went out drinking with his friends. He thought it was 2 a.m. rather than 12:22 a.m.

West Orange residents feeling pain at the pump Skimmers, small devices used to steal personal information, make credit-card fraud hard to track. JENNIFER NESSLAR STAFF WRITER

Four months ago, Dennis Marsico stopped to fill his gas tank at the 7-Eleven at Lakeside Village. He paid at the pump with his debit card. As he was pumping his gas, he noticed a large white van in front of him. The back windows on the van were covered by old T-shirts. “I just thought it was kind of odd,” Marsico said. The van continued to sit at the station after he left. He didn’t think more of it until a few days later, when his bank called him. His card had been charged $300 at a liquor store —

Since Marsico experienced credit-card fraud, his neighborhood’s Next Door social-media website has been filled with posts discussing credit-card fraud at local gas pumps, primarily gas pumps at local 7-Elevens. He has talked to friends who also say they experienced a similar situation at the gas station Marsico visited. Marsico retraced his steps and did some research. Although he is not certain, he thinks it is possible the people in the van stole his information without even getting out of the car using a new technology called skimmers. A skimmer is a device that can steal credit-card information. Some skimmers are placed on top of the credit-card reader. But now many are small enough to fit inside the reader itself. “As technology has increased and gotten smaller, so have devices used to steal,” said Aaron Keller, press secretary for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Criminals can insert a skimmer in a card reader and leave it there for a period of time. When they return, they don’t even need to retrieve the skimmer. They simply can drive through the parking lot and, using Bluetooth technology, download the information

of all the cards that have gone through the reader. Earlier this year, the Florida Department of Agriculture conducted a statewide sweep looking for skimmers, Keller said. In three months, the department inspected more than 7,000 gas stations around the state and found more than 100 skimmers. These skimmers are difficult for both gas station owners and law enforcement to monitor. “Skimmers are a complex challenge in Florida,” Keller said. Although Marsico’s bank returned the money to his account within a few weeks, Marsico pays close attention when he pumps gas. He pays for his purchases inside the store. “You never know,” he said. “Just go inside. It’s not that much harder to do.” Scott Allen, a lieutenant over support services at the Winter Garden Police Department, said anytime you slide a card, you should be aware. “People are truly just not paying attention to what they’re doing,” he said. Allen said people should exercise caution when using other machines such as ATMs or even sliding a card inside of a store.

TIPS n Pay inside. This is the safer route but not the most convenient, especially if you have children with you. n Pay with cash. No one can steal your information this way. n Use credit card rather than a debit card. It is easier to retrieve stolen money from a credit card. n Use pumps closest to the entrance where the cashier can see. Criminals are more likely to place skimmers out of eyesight of the cashier. n Be mindful of your surroundings. If you notice something odd about the pump or the tape on the front is broken, report the situation and don’t use the pump.

Winter Garden commissioners voted unanimously to request proposals to develop a city-owned parcel of about one-half acre at 109 Boyd St., opposite the location for the downtown parking garage. The property currently contains surface parking, which the city will not need after the garage is built. Economic Development Director Tanja Gerhartz said the city’s goal is to solicit a private developer to build a “quality infill development.” The Request for Proposal document said all plans must fit the established architectural character of the Downtown Historic District. The RFP limits the building’s height to three stories. City Manager Mike Bollhoefer told commissioners some developers proposed building a six-story structure in downtown either at 109 Boyd St. or on another city-owned lot. Six stories is about twice as high as the Edgewater Hotel, the tallest downtown building. Bollhoefer said he tells developers that six stories would be out of proportion with the rest of downtown but wanted to make sure commissioners agreed. After some discussion, no one spoke in favor of developing six story buildings in downtown. “I prefer three stories, maybe four, depending upon (the) design,” Commissioner Kent Makin said.

WINTER GARDEN

CAR SHOW

Bollhoefer said the city reached an agreement to bring the Cruzn-Car show back to downtown once each quarter, starting on Saturday, Nov. 21. He said downtown merchants were evenly split on whether or not they wanted the show back; city staff will continue to work with merchants to address those concerns and minimize objections to the show.

Winter Garden Police Chief George Brennan swore in two new officers: Steven Edmonds and Gean Torres. Edmonds was born in Virginia and grew up in the Kissimmee area, where he graduated from Poinciana high school. He earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering in 2011 from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State College. After returning to Kissimmee, he decided to pursue his lifelong ambition to become a police officer and put himself through the police academy in Osceola County. Torres was born in Puerto Rico and also grew up in the Kissimmee area. He graduated from Gateway High School and enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves. His unit was activated in 2007, and he served in Iraq in 2008. His reserve commitment ended with an honorable discharge in 2011. He earned an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Valencia, and a bachelor’s degree in that subject in 2014 from the American Military Academy. He graduated from the police academy in Osceola County in December, 2014, and he received the Top Gun award. Bollhoefer announced the retirement of Deputy Police Chief Bill Sullivan. Sullivan served nine years with Winter Garden after 30 years with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

n The commission unanimously approved a contract to Southland Construction for the Stoneybrook West Parkway turn-lane extension for an amount not to exceed $330,797.30. Southland made a competitive bid and already is working on site for the Expressway Authority. n Commissioners unanimously passed the first reading of an ordinance to provide a more restrictive special exception process for electronic billboards. The ordinance specifically grants authority to the commission to perform any special exception reviews. The second reading of the ordinance will take place Dec. 10. n The commission unanimously voted to cancel commission meetings on the fourth Thursday in November and December to avoid conflicts with the holidays. n During the comments from the public section, Joseph Richardson apologized to Commissioner Colin Sharman for remarks he made about the commissioner’s knowledge of a letter from the Central Florida Free Thought Community. Richardson said, “I made those comments publicly and thought I should apologize publicly.” n Mayor John Rees asked about the fence on the corner of the surface parking garage at the corner of Tremaine and Boyd streets. Bollhoefer said the fence was a necessary safety measure because underground power lines were being moved to prepare for building the downtown parking garage. They plan to take down the fence or decorate it by Dec. 18. He has kept the downtown merchants informed.

West Orange County towns that receive police dispatching services from Winter Garden. Department dispatchers will now serve Ocoee, Oakland and Windermere in addition to Winter Garden. This arrangement will help the four police departments coordinate with one another as needed in emergencies. Bollhoefer said the additional dispatchers already in the budget can handle the additional calls from Windermere. The annual cost to Windermere will be $38,192 based on an Oct. 1 start date. Ocoee veteran author shares war tale

BY ZAK KERR STAFF WRITER

Retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Robert Hartley shared a special story while making his keynote speech at Ocoee’s Veterans Day event. Hartley, whose book from his experiences in uniform during the Vietnam War published Feb. 24 — “Gunship Pilot: An Attack Helicopter Warrior Remembers Vietnam” — shared what he calls “Benny’s Story.” “It was April 1968, and I had been in Vietnam for less than a month,” Hartley said. The team in his gunship helicopter consisted of a pilot, Hartley as co-pilot and a crew chief, Ben Stevens, who acted as a door gunner, he said. Weapons on the craft consisted of 48 rockets and a machine gun, which Hartley said were used in part to prevent North Vietnamese troops from relaying supplies and troops along the trail. “Our unit’s primary mission was to provide direct-fire artillery support for infantry units in contact with the enemy,” Hartley said of his team’s flight into A Shau Valley. “This valley was right up against the Laotian border and was part of the Ho Chi

OCOEE

Minh Trail.” Hartley’s helicopter and other U.S. helicopters in the area were looking for Charlie. “As we flew … I was absolutely mesmerized by the contrast between the area south of Vietnam we were flying over and the country of Laos that lay just over the ridge line to my right,” Hartley said. “Laos was a vast expanse of lush, green, undisturbed jungle, while this area in South Vietnam was a grayish brown moonscape covered with thousands of bomb craters and shattered trees.” Hartley noticed a truck driving along the hillside, and the U.S. had no trucks in the area. The driver stopped beneath the only tree left in that vicinity, so Hartley’s team blew it up before pulling out of a dive, he said. “It was at this point that all hell broke loose,” Hartley said. “They … unloaded their AK-47s at us. Bullets were flying everywhere, and things began moving slowly, at least for me.” Bullets felt like someone whacking his seat with a sledgehammer, and shattered Plexiglas fell from above. The bullets that

did not pass through were lodged in their gauges, almost all of which turned off, he said. Once the firing stopped, Hartley and the pilot were fine, but they did not see Stevens. He then noticed one of the few gauges still working was for fuel, which was leaking. They approached a U.S. landing spot not far away, when a captain of a fellow aircraft on the mission told them something was hanging from their gunship. “He’d caught up with us and (said) hanging from our aircraft was our crew chief, Benny,” Hartley said. “Benny was hit in

Stevens had two huge bruises on his back and was out of action just a few weeks. Hartley counted 29 bullet holes in the gunship. “I should have been dead,” he said. “When we pulled out of our dive, I had looked down to disarm the weapons system.” Doing that duty as co-pilot saved his life and helped him and his pilot save Stevens — three American lives among many Hartley is proud to say he helped to save in Vietnam.

Luckily, he had on … a 20-foot tether that connects him to the aircraft.” Just before landing, Stevens regained consciousness and ascended his tether, throwing himself on the floor in the nick of time. “At that moment, the engine failed due to fuel starvation,” he said. “We fell in from about 10 feet … and came to rest on the aircraft’s belly. Upon impact, Benny was tossed back out of the aircraft and came to rest beside it.”

f you’ve been to Twistee Treat in Ocoee on a Friday night, you have probably seen — or at least heard — a live musical performance somewhere near that swirly-roofed stand. It was November 1990 when Jack Lewis and his wife, Judie, now in their 70s, started a weekly bluegrass jam in the parking lot at West Colonial Drive and Maguire Road.

This month, the Lewises and the other musicians who play there are celebrating 25 solid years of this tradition centered on music and friendship. Decades ago, Jack was on an Army mission to make a delivery to the office building where Judie worked. He saw her there and waited until she had finished working for the day to introduce himself. A few days later, they were married. Jack has been involved with the Florida bluegrass scene for almost 40 years. Judie was at first a passive listener, until she was inspired by a young woman who played the lead on the upright bass at one Friday night jam. After that, Jack taught Judie to play, and she became a key picker at the jams. Before the jam started in Ocoee, Jack Lewis and some friends had

and no cussing. “It’s just good, clean fun,” Creed said. Lewis remembers musicians who have come from all over to join the jam. People from across the United States have found out about it and stopped by during their vacations to Central Florida. There was an airplane pilot who would join whenever he was in the area. And even bluegrass enthusiasts from Switzerland, Russia, England and other countries have participated. “A lot of people have come and gone,” Lewis said. “Good friends that have passed away, some that would come to pick and others that would just come to listen.” Those listeners are also an important part of the jam. At times, there have been more than 100 people watching. There are always at least several people who set up lawn chairs or sit in the back of their trucks and vans to enjoy the music. Many of the listeners tend to be older couples who appreciate an opportunity to watch the guitarists, bassists, mandolinists, violinists, banjo players and singers for free, but all ages are welcome and embraced. Anyone is invited to pack up their instruments and head over to pick along at the jam. The music tends to start up around 7 p.m. “We all love the music — that’s the main thing,” Lewis said. “And you meet a lot of people there. I’ve met some wonderful people.”

been playing together regularly outdoors near Tanner Hall on the shore of Lake Apopka. But the mosquitoes were too vicious to continue there. Lewis knew some firefighters who let the group move to a firehouse in Winter Garden, but concerns about liabilities arose and Lewis had to come up with a new plan. The pickers moved again to the parking lot now anchored by Twistee Treat, Pizza Hut and a strip mall. At first, the Lewises worried the business owners might ask them to leave, but no one ever did. “I think what made it kind of a success was, we’d be out there in the middle of the parking lot … and people would get ice cream and they’d wander over to see what was happening,” Jack Lewis said. At first, the jam was a Thursday event, but it soon switched to Friday so the musicians could stay up late without worrying about getting up early for work the next day. “We have been out there 1:30, 2 o’clock in the morning, back when I was younger,” said Gerald Creed, a longtime jam participant and a member of Lewis’ band, The Moonlite Express. Gatita (ID #A334280) has one thing on her Christmas list this year: to find a loving new home. This sweet, 8-year-old cat was taken to the shelter after her owner died. She is declawed and purrs when receiving attention. She also tips the scale at a whopping 23 pounds. She is the “purrfect” family cat. Gatita already has been spayed, microchipped and vaccinated, so she is ready to go home with a new family immediately.

THESE OLD TIMES

FROM THE WINTER GARDEN HERITAGE FOUNDATION IN THE ARCHIVES Most of Winter Garden’s theaters were established and run by Collie M. Biggers, a former Sanford motorcycle police officer and early cinema buff. He moved to town in the early 1920s to establish the first Winter Garden Theatre, which stood just east of the present Garden Theatre. The first establishment burned in December 1934, and the current building rose a year later. Biggers is shown here with a canine friend.

Cathy and Robby Clay opened The Farmacy so that local produce would be available in downtown Winter Garden.

The Farmacy has grown from a booth at the farmers’ market to a permanent shop in the downtown neighborhood. CATHERINE SINCLAIR KERR STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN

It’s an unfortunate predicament: It’s the middle of the week, and you’re running out of the local, organic produce you bought at the farmers’ market on Saturday. But you don’t know where to restock until the next market day. Residents of Winter Garden don’t have to worry about this situation anymore. With The Farmacy now open downtown, the community has nearby access to health-mindful foods. “All of our produce is organically grown, and we pull everything locally as much as we possible can,” co-owner Cathy Clay said. “We wanted to create a local food system so that people who live here can actually eat food that’s grown here.” Clay and her husband, Robby, had a dream a few years ago to start their own farm. But they

wanted to try out the lifestyle before jumping in completely, so Cathy started volunteering at a local farm a few times a week. The farm had a large supply of kale that wasn’t selling, and the farm owners didn’t have time to harvest it and figure out what to do with it. Cathy didn’t want the kale to go to waste, so she decided to pick it and set up a booth at the Winter Garden Farmers’ Market. “That was our first day as The Farmacy, and that was about a year and eight months ago,” Cathy said. From there, the booth at the market grew to the point that it eventually sold meats, dairy products and produce from about 12 different local farms. Customers kept asking the Clays where their store was because they wanted somewhere to shop during the week. The Farmacy officially opened in early November. “It’s way fresher, way health-

ier,” Cathy Clay said. “Literally, some of the stuff in our store was picked yesterday morning. You’re not going to find that at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods.” Cathy said she and Robby have had plenty of community support from customers. “The West Orange area, we just have a heart for it, and we feel like we’re supposed to be here,” Cathy said.

In the Eagles’ win Nov. 13 against International Community School, sophomore Andrew Abdelmalak recorded the program’s first hat trick when he scored 3 goals in a 3-0 victory.

What’s it mean to you to have had the first hat trick in Legacy’s soccer program’s history? I didn’t know it was the first. I thought some other player had scored a hat trick. I was pretty excited (when I found out).

Is there an opponent you’re particularly looking forward to facing? We have a game on Friday against Orlando Christian Prep. We don’t know much about that team, but I (hope) we win that game.

The team is off to a 2-2 start, which has it on pace to greatly eclipse last season’s four wins. What has your impression been so far of how the team has done? I feel we’re getting way better and really fast. I think we’re way better than last year and a lot better than the first year.

You have three girls playing on the team. What’s that like? Actually, some of the girl are doing better work than some of the boys.

You got a few important players back from football and cross country, now that those seasons are over. How big has that been? It’s really helping us. I was the goalkeeper, and then one of the football guys took up

Are you an Orlando City Soccer Club fan? Oh yeah, I went to a few games this season. D.C. United was a pretty good game.

Who is your favorite soccer player? Lionel Messi, who plays for Barcelona.

What else do you like to do with your free time? I play FIFA a lot. I spend a lot of time playing it. I don’t count. What’s your favorite class at Legacy? Mrs. Wiggers’ language arts class. It’s a 75-minute class, but you don’t feel like it’s the whole 75 minutes. It’s fun. What’s the last good movie you saw and what did you like about it? It was called “The Eagle” — it’s like a Roman movie. I can’t remember much about it, but it was good. — STEVEN RYZEWSKI

Tyler Baum, a senior pitcher for West Orange, signed his National Letter of Intent to play baseball for the University of North Carolina.

Seniors sign and shine STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR WEST ORANGE Last week was an important time in the lives of many area high-school senior athletes, as they each took pen to paper to a National Letter of Intent during the NCAA’s Early Signing Period. Although Feb. 3 is recognized more widely as “National Signing Day,” thanks to its ties to the beginning of football’s regular signing period, the early period for basketball and other sports is another opportunity for local schools to celebrate their best and brightest.

This year’s early period ran from Nov. 11 to 18, with students West Orange High and Foundation Academy signing NLIs. The Warriors had a total of 17 non-football athletes recognized in several ceremonies throughout the week, with senior pitcher Tyler Baum’s signing with North Carolina baseball among the more highprofile recruitments coming to an end. In total, all seven seniors on the West Orange baseball team for this coming spring signed an NLI. The Lions held a ceremony to recognized senior volleyball standout Elyssa Stimmell.

Don’t count Ocoee out Orange. “We’ve got a big target on our back because we’ve got a couple transfers, but we plan on showing Orlando that we’re a force to be reckoned with.” The team’s coach, Gina Solano, does not shy away from the expectations, either. Solano said her program expects to first win Class 7A, District 5 and then contend for a state title in 7A. “The offense takes time, not only for the players getting use to each other on the court but also for them learning new plays,” Solano said. “I have mainly focused on our defense. We have great offensive players, but our defense is the key — creating easy fast break offense.”

Part of the challenge has been getting a team with transfers and a freshman to gel. Beyond Carter, the other two transfer additions include Madison Perez and Shaia Blair, along with freshman Zamaiya Robinson. Still, Carter touts the family feeling she has experienced at Ocoee, and Solano said she has observed a good vibe among the girls. Furthermore, the juniors have emerged as leaders. “These girls are always together at school and after school — we definitely have a lot of fun together,” Solano said. “All my juniors have stepped up this year starting in the preseason.” Despite an influx of new

faces, there is some base familiarity. A few of the players, including Di’Mon Steele and Dynasty Carter, were teammates for a championship team at Ocoee Middle School. And what would it mean to the Knights to leave last year’s 7-15 mark in the dust? It is a thought that excites the team’s veterans. “It would mean a lot,” Steele said. “A lot of people look down on this school, on the program, so we’re showing them that we can actually do this. Don’t count Ocoee out.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@wotimes.com.

Why not them? Foundation hopes to keep making history After winning the program’s first ever playoff game Nov. 13, the Lions can bring home a regional championship with a win Friday. JENNIFER NESSLAR STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN Brad Lord’s voice wavered for a moment as he talked to his team. “Seven years ago, I was told we could not compete in district play — we were too small of a school,” Lord said. “(I was told) that we didn’t have enough good football players here, and we had to play in the little Sunshine (State Athletic) Conference.” Lord insisted on his Foundation Academy Lions playing in district competition seven years ago, though, and it paid off Nov. 13. In Friday’s 38-18 victory over Warner Christian in the regional semifinals of the Class 2A State Tournament, the Lions (7-4) got their first playoff victory in school history. “We have a very good team,” Lord said. “I expected it.” The victory means Foundation will play Victory Christian (6-5), last year’s Class 2A state champion, this week at home. Foundation faced Victory earlier this season and beat Victory 34-28, but went into overtime to do so. Lord knows his team will have to be focused to beat a good team twice in one season, but knows how to prepare the team. “We’ll do what we’ve done all year,” he said. “We’ll go to work hard Monday, Tuesday, Wednes-

day, ease off on Thursday. Our boys work hard. They’ve bought into it.” But he’s not underestimating Victory Christian. “Tommy Lewis from Victory Christian is a fantastic coach,” Lord said. “It’s a pretty heated rivalry, so it should be a real crazy here (Nov. 20).” In last week’s game, Foundation Academy had a strong rushing game, moving a total of 545 yards on the ground, alone. Konrie Brown rushed for 215 yards, Jaquan Patterson compiled 138 yards, and Gabe Walker added 135. “I was hungry for success tonight,” said Patterson, who scored two touchdowns.

Warner opened the night with a touchdown but did not score again in the first half, as Foundation scored 31 points in the first half alone. In the second half, many players for the Lions came off the bench to get playing time. Warner scored two more touchdowns, while Foundation scored one. “We got sloppy in the second half,” Lord said. “I’m not putting that on players. I’m putting it on our coaching staff. “We’re going to have to get a lot more precise and have everything perfect for Victory Christian next week.” Contact Jennifer Nesslar at jnesslar@wotimes.com.

WOHS ready for Apopka CONTINUED FROM 19A

Bob Head challenged his players to watch four hours of game film on the Blue Darters over the weekend to begin preparation for the two rivals’ fourth meeting in two seasons Nov. 20. It was an assignment the Warriors gladly accepted. “I’m ready to (watch some film) and see what they’ve been up to,” senior wide receiver Eddie McDoom said. “I want to see what they have for us. I’m probably going to watch a lot more than (the required four hours).” In one sense, things have gone well lately for the boys in blue and orange of late in this series. West Orange (10-1) has defeated the Blue Darters (10-1) two of the past three times the teams have met — an unusual turn in the rivalry that was one-sided in favor of Apopka for the better part of two decades. The outlier, though, is Apopka’s 42-0 trouncing of the Warriors in this same game a year ago. It is a result that has fueled West Orange dating back to that disappointing November 2014 night. The Warriors got their first shot at revenge earlier this fall in a 28-3 victory on the road in Apopka Oct. 2. In that contest, it was West Orange’s defense — which has been on fire of late — that shined brightest. It is a performance Head hopes his unit can recreate. “Are you kidding? When you play Apopka, (your defense) has to be huge,” Head said. One thing that has been going well for the Warriors in recent weeks is the way the two units — offense and defense — have fed off

one another. Their collective success in the first and second quarters over the past two games has led to blowout wins over Ocoee and Boone, respectively. “The offense — they’ve been a big help,” said senior Decary Croaker, who had an interception in the first quarter against the Braves. “With them scoring like that, it gets us more pumped to play better defense.” The Warriors have done well this season in scoring on either their first drive or second drive — as they’ve done in each of the past three weeks. That emphasis on setting the tone early could go a long way toward avoiding a repeat of last year, where things started slowly and only got worse as the evening progressed. “We want to start strong,” McDoom said. “Our mentality coming into the game is just to dominate early.” Defeating Apopka would be a huge step for the program. West Orange has never waded deeper into playoff waters than the regional semifinals and, although the Warriors have had success against the Blue Darters in recent meetings, the mental hurdle of beating them in the playoffs remains. What is in encouraging, though, is the focus West Orange has shown in the past two weeks. “We try to be all-business, all the time,” Head said. “The main thing we try to do is start fast. We feed each other — if our defense gets a stop, it’s an extra possession for our offense.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@wotimes.com.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Meritage unveils model

With infrastructure construction underway, developer Park Development Corporation expects to begin Ocoee’s City Center West Orange in just three months.

Meritage Homes recently opened a new model home at its community of Johns Lake Pointe, located off Avalon Road in Winter Garden. Brian Kittle, division president of Meritage Homes, said the 3,098-square-foot home features four bedrooms, three-and-one-half baths, formal living room, casual dining room and family room, upstairs game room and owner’s suite. The Astoria is priced from $313,990. Kittle said the community has only 20 home sites remaining for new energyefficient homes. Sizes range from 2,000 to 3,467 square feet of living area, with prices from $275,990 to $347,990.

Andro Corp. leases locally NAI Realvest recently completed three lease agreements for industrial space totaling 7,500 square feet in Carter Commerce Center at 890 and 902 Carter Road in Winter Garden. Michael Heidrich, a principal at NAI Realvest, and associate Patty Nolff represented local landlord Carter Commerce Center LLC, in a new lease to Andro Corp. Industries for Suite 180 with 1,875 square feet. Heidrich also negotiated two lease renewals at Carter Commerce Center — one suite with 3,750 square feet occupied by Fastenal and one 1,875 square foot suite, where Turf Athletics LLC is the tenant.

THE HOMES City Center West Orange’s residential component, called 29 Palms at City Center, will feature four different floor plans that range in size from 696 to nearly 1,300 square feet and be priced from $170,000 to the mid-$200,000s.

The 696-square-foot Sable is a one-bedroom, one-bath home The Queen, 1,076 square feet, features two bedrooms, two baths and a den.

The Royal features two bedrooms, two baths and a den in its 1,167 square feet.

The Majesty, a three-bedroom, two-bath unit, is the largest at 1,237 square feet.

Center of the city And with infrastructure construction already taking place at the site, PDC CEO David Townsend said construction should begin in February 2016. “The site is across from a major hospital in the growing community of Ocoee,” he said. “City Center is 15 minutes from Disney, Downtown Orlando and the Orange County Convention Center.” The project’s phase one will include 500 multifamily units, 150,000 square feet of retail/ restaurant, 50,000 square feet of office and a new Hilton Garden Inn. Grand openings should begin in late 2017, Townsend said. At buildout, the project will feature 2,000 apartments/condominiums (under the name 29 Palms at City Center) and 500,000 square feet of retail, which includes a theater, restaurants a grocery store and shops. Four residence options, ranging in size from 696 to nearly 1,300 square feet, will be priced from $170,000 to the mid-$200,000s. Townsend said he expects the project to attract buyers who seek that live-work-play lifestyle. Furthermore, he believes City Center

West Orange complements the building boom West Orange is experiencing in Horizon West. “Millenials and empty nesters,” he said of his anticipated clientele. “Unlike downtown, City Center West Orange offers shopping, entertainment, grocery, medical offices, etc. — all within a short walk from your front door.” Earlier this year, City Center West Orange also received approval from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services as an EB-5 regional center project. Under this designation, qualified foreign nationals who invest $500,000 in City Center West Orange can receive green cards for themselves and their immediate families to work and live anywhere in the United States. Investors must prove the money comes from legal sources, and the money must create 10 American jobs for 24 months. The conditional green card is valid for two years. After that time, a petition is submitted to the USCIS confirming the investment has been made and that 10 jobs have been created as a result. Once USCIS approves that peti-
