Wout van Steensel Industrial Designer
Me Hi, I´m a 23 year old dutch student at the Hogeschool rotterdam, Majoring in Industrial product design. With a love for technolgy and great design I inspire to make product that will help our world for the better and put a smile on your face.

AIR TAP Case Due to the increasing growth of our industry, the ground is getting more contaminated with heavy metals and fertilizers, making it harder for our water treatment plants to create enough clean drinking water to support all our citizens. Aiming at autonomous living, we focused on creating a device that can be installed in your own home, generating the clean drinking water for by pulling water out of the air.
AIR TAP During the development of airtap we were continualy trying to imporve our concept increase the amount of water we could generate and become more energy effecient. One of the main differences we made with regular water generators is that we used thermoelectric cooling, this decreases the energy lost during the cooling of the air. Another way we boosted our efficienty was by using self learning AI that would control airflow and cooling.
The stacking Chocolate mask
Mask
The first design for the mask, where people could build their own masks
further development of the mask and art combination
The proces of creating a mask made out of chocolate is a complicated proces. Trying to keep the the esscene of picassos work while working with something. so fragile as chocolate was as challenging as it was fun.
Combining the mask principle with famous art work
The mask is created out of diffrent layers of chocolate when combined form the mask.
The process
Mask
While creating a product, inspiration comes from alot of . diffrent places. While working on the piece we continued to look at picassos art to see how we could make the mask as indentical to his work as possible.

Posie object/beleving
Participating in lightchallenge, we were asked to create a lighting design for "the waterschans" an old fortress laying in bergen op zoom that was beeing renovated at the time. Our biggest challenge was to create a real experience that improves and connects to the story of "The waterschans" it self.
LightChallenge
The theme for the Lightchallenge was "Feel the Night". One of the first things we noticed when we visted Bergen op Zoom at night was large amount of light polution, that even with a clear sky you could barely see any stars. In our design we wanted to bring back the stars that the sailors used to navigate way back in the time when the fortress was in its full glory.
De nachtspiegel. Our vision is to use the water as our mirror back in time, when you look into the water you would see a reflection of the Nightsky that should be above our viewers right now, But when they look up they can see the night that has been lost by the night polution.

Dragonhead barbeque
Sheetmetal
A barbeque in the shape of a dragon's head made out of sheet . metal. That is what I wanted to make when we got asked to make a barbeque. And so I did, learning alot about the strenghts of a product and working with limitations.

Lightwell asked us te design an housing on top of their Springeye lamppost. the housing needed to able to contain a 4g smartcell and protect what was inside from any weather condition. while also making sure the housing fits with the slim design of the springeye it self

one of the problems with the current controller is looking at your speed while driving. I have been looking at better ways too display your speed and power while riding.

The injection tray
Injection molding
In order to learn more about the rules of injection molding we created an entire mold ourself for our little self developed tray. This gives me a better insight on what the possiblities are while designing a product.

Self playing Piano
Player Piano The scanner is a light sensor that detects the light value passing through the paper, using different colors i could use one sensor to read different notes.
The music sheet i use to read notes, black is a full note and gray make a sharp
The piano consist out of three main parts: The hammers, The scanner and The strings. They work together to make the entire thing work. Final piano version of the piano, that combines all the parts. The piano was made to move the keys accordingly to the notes that are beeing played.
Teching up, I build a self playing piano using arduino and lasercut parts. The biggest challenge taking something physical as the notes on paper and turning it into something digital.
With Burst’s pressure based handle, your throttle and braking was never so natural.

Sketching is in my eyes one of the more important skills to have as an designer, it is the way to communicate your ideas to others. Because of this i'm allways trying to improve my sketch skills. and besides that dont we just all like to make a small piece of art?
