After Turn Off Designer En-Chuan, Tsui Shao-Lun, Chao Hung-Jung, Lin December 2010

-2-

2011 Red dot design concept [ winner ]

People used to everything in life for granted. When we were children, we marveled at the rainbow and excited about touching animals. As we aged, the delights of discovery gradually vanished in real life. We redefine the panel as a passage to lead us to a fantasy world that is already forgotten. After turning off, an imaginary world escapes from the crack, reminding us that life could be better and eco-friendly with a simple change.

Design Feature

User could choose various projecting images according to their preference. Via basic lights and shadow principle, by changing the simple component, people could rediscover the little happiness from daily life. Change the lighting direction of the panel's original LED, with cutting pattern, the image will jump out of the gap when turning off the light.

-4-

Domestic Life

Scenario

What is the first scene to see when you coming back home? How about a cute animal pattern on the wall guiding you where the light panel is ? Replace the original LED light with an animal pattern on the wall.

-5-

Film Making We made a film to present an imaginary world after turning off the light. When the light shutting down, there was a deer pop up on the wall. Then, the deer jumped out the panel to explore the room. After a period of time, when the deer hearing that somebody is coming to the room, the deer run back to the panel again.

-6-

Domestic Life

Prototype Trying to make the concept into reality, we try many times to make the projection pattern in the correct size and proportion. A slightly change of the LED place would affect the shape of the animal. In addition, the shape of the cutting pattern are also important for the result.

-9-

Feature The surface of the lampshade applies the ink of scratch cards. Users could scratch off the paint with their own strokes by fingers, coins and pen.

-10-

Domestic Life

Scenario When lighting up, the lights would light up along the scratching strokes. We would like to invite the users release their imagination behind the lights and shadows. Furthermore, the product brings new value to each user.

-11-

Facet Chair Designer En-Chuan, Tsui May 2009

-12-

Sitting, lying, and standing are the three main gestures in our daily life. Among them, sitting shares a great proportion in work, commute, and relax. Chairs stand as the chair in life. The major research of human sitting posture at this project is the four fulcrum which contains the “point sustain” and “surface sustain”. The former supports the neck and waist; the later supports the back and bottom. In addition, the 135° angle of body and thigh lends the least share of burden to the spine. Base on the conditions above, I would like to build the sense of body surround and support on my project.

Domestic Life

2009 YODEX Young Desginer’s Exhibition

-13-

Development From idea sketching to rough model making, the main image of the chair had changed for several times. However, the main goal of the chair was always the same, which is to make a comfortable and adjustable chair. The chair should provide each user customized experience.

-14-

Domestic Life

Prototype After concept development stage, I went to the furniture factory to discuss the details with the professional craftsman. From revising the size, mechanism working, spray painting, polishing to cushion making, it take almost 3 months to complete the project.

-15-

Image Facet is the key design element of the chair.I want to make a chair with diamondlike feature. In addition, the angle of each facet is based on the former research.

-16-

Domestic Life

Research The major research of human sitting posture at this project is the four fulcrum which contains the “point sustain” and “surface sustain”. 1. Two point sustain and surface sustain: Observing the chairs on the market, there are two points which sustain the neck and waist that could be regulated; the other two which are shoulder and leg are responsible for large surface sustain. 2. 125 - 135 Research said that when body and the leg are in the angle of 125 to 135 degree, the weight of the body would distribute to each part of body most even. Furthermore, the waist would suffer the less pressure from the body.

Two point sustain / Two surface sustain

-17-

Function

For various usages, there 5 angles for user to adjust. In addtion, there are two component which could gather together.

Sit straight

Sit backward

Service Design

Background 01

WHO (2005) declares that Obesity is one of the greatest public health challenges of the 21st century. In addition to causing various physical disabilities and psychological problems, excess weight also drastically increases social burdens.

02

Base on Bureau Of Health Promotion Taiwan’s research (BHPT, 2011), 22.7% work place employees in Taiwan are overweight (24≦BMI<27), and 11.8% have obesity problem (BMI≧27).

03

04

05

06

More than 40% employees are breakfast/ lunch fast-food junkies. In addition, almost 20% employees have hypertension, diabetes, or cardiovascular diseases.

In BHPT’s report, 34% male and 38% female employees said that they had not done any exercise in recently one month. Unhealthy lifestyle causes serious health problems. Researches argued that two-thirds people would gain weight again after 1year, and people almost regain all of their lost weight within 5 years (Butryn et al., 2004; Blissmer et al., 2005). According the reports of World Health Organization (WHO), Obesity Treatment should be considered as a long-term strategy. People who want to reduce overweight do not only need healthy diets and regular physical activity, but Supportive Environments as well.

Goal

Provide a service design that help building a supportive environment for urban dieted office workers from daily life. Supportive environment includes 4 aspects: 1. Emotional support. 2. Informational support. 3. Instrumental support. 4. Appraisal support. House (1981),Cohen, Underwood & Gottlieb (2000)

Interview & Anthropological Study x8

Journey map

Transtheoretical model states that the change of life style and behavior should take 6 months at less to form a new one.(Prochaska & Velicer, 1997) Therefore, the 8 interviewees were all undergoing diet experiences more than 6 months but failed.

Make a journey map of diet people by applying “Social support theory”and “Process of change theory” (Kurt Lewin1987),

Service Design

Empathy map

Point of view

Service design thinking

The work place employees who want to get rid of obesity in Taipei City needs a sustainable, encouraging, joyful healthy lifestyle. They are hardly perseverant and easily give up because of unhealthy living environment.

1.How might we help people change behavior through laugh with joy, encouragement, and selffulfillment? 2.How might we construct healthy lifestyle through the interaction of group behavior? 3.How might we provide people with comprehensive information of Supportive Environments? 4.How might we attract more service providers to be the stakeholders of healthy lifestyle value network? 5.How might we make the healthy lifestyle value network tainable?

-25-

-43-

Prototype Bounce Bounce are mainly composed of three parts: a rubber cover, an aluminum frame and an acrylic board. Each element plays an important role to the shoes. Rubber cover provides a soft and elastic feeling to the user. Aluminum frame and acrylic board are responsible to sustain the inward strength from the strings. For achieving the goal of bouncing feeling, when choosing the strings, I had surveyed many materials which need to be flexible enough but sustainable for the weight of the human. Finally, I found that the strings used for tennis racket is the best choice for my shoes.

-44-

Leisure Life

Concept

What is the most comfortable and refreshing shoes wearing experience that you have ever experienced? Weave colorful strings on the shoes, then, create a whole new style of the shoes. No matter who wears the shoes, he/ she would probably get a customized experience which would not be experienced by the other. Furthermore, sand and dirt would never gather in the shoes anymore.

“ Free Knife Handle” is a kitchen knife which can operate it with two hands. According to the observation, when cutting the meat with bones, the fruits, and freezing meat, there is a great deal of women who do not have enough strength to cut it by one hand. Therefore, they might press the knife with placing the other hand on the back of knife. However, the narrow space might cause another hurt on the hand.

Water player + Ubiquitous = Swimmate Everywhere

Definition

In this project, I define ubiquitous + swimming as a place with different people at the same time.

-64-

Workshop

Interactice/ Less-Interactive

Water activity could be roughly seperated into two styles which are interactive and less-interactive. People who boat in the river or play in the water playland would be more interactive, on the other hand, swimming pools or surfing in the sea would be less-interactive and personal. In this project, I would like to enhance people to interact, so that I choose swimming pools as my target place.

-65-

Expectation Swimming pools is where people learn and train their swimming skills. Both of the new learner and the professional swimmer have some expectation to achieve their goal. I devided them into emotional and physiological parts. In each part, there are some needs and characteristic which would be the elements for the designing part.
