NATURES GEM IN FLORIDA

Bok Tower Gardens

When Bok Tower Gardens founder Edward W. Bokimmigrated to America from Den Helder, Netherlands at age six, he did not understand the language, customs or culture. Through determination and hard work, he became a highly successful publisher, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, respected humanitarian and an advocate of world peace and the environment. Bok’s grandmother told him to “make you the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it,” which he did throughout his lifetime – and it still guides our mission to this day.

THEJ GROUNDS OF BOK TOWERS

In 1921, Edward W. Bok was spending the winter months in the residential Mountain Lake community located adjacent to one of the highest hills on Florida’s Lake Wales Ridge, at 298 feet above sea level. He enjoyed taking evening walks to the top of “Iron Mountain,” among the virgin pines and sandhill scrub, to enjoy Florida’s dramatic sunsets and bird life. The idea came to him to preserve this hilltop and create a bird sanctuary – a place of beauty, serenity and peace.

Integral to Bok’s idea was the availability of a famous landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. Having made arrangements to buy land on the hilltop, Bok commissioned Olmsted to change this arid sandhill into “a spot of beauty second to none in the country.” The first year was spent digging trenches and laying water pipes for irrigation, after which rich black soil was brought by the thousands of loads.

With the proper conditions for a subtropical garden in place, the planting of bushes and trees began to provide food for migrating birds. Today, these plantings provide shade to visitors as well as refuge for squirrels and 126 bird species.

Created to entice wildlife to take residence, the Reflection Pool gives visitors one of the most memorable experiences in the Gardens. Its location captures the reflection of the Singing Tower and offers the first image visitors have when entering the gardens.

I believe nature is here to inspire us to live, dream and create, and to remind us who we really are – creators. I see nature as our inspiration for everyday living. And, for that we must be grateful.

After a divorce and a challenging relationship, I spent a lot of solo time in nature rebuilding myself. The beach was my go-to spot, and I could often be found reading in a hammock hung between two elegant driftwood trees or just looking out over the beautiful aqua gulf waters. Being there gave me comfort, security

and inspiration to live life more fully than I ever had before.

There was something magical about this beach, with its beautiful, white, fine sand and abundance of weathered driftwood. It faced west and was both hidden and easily visible at the same time. Above all, it exuded a powerful energy that attracted visitors – couples, families, little girls skipping like sea fairies, fishermen, teens, models and lovers - from all around the world. I noticed that people were drawn to touch and feel the energy of the trees, and one in particular, which I affectionately dubbed The Beauty Tree.

What, I wondered, was it about these trees that drew people in and energized them?

THE FUTURE OF

LUXURY DESIGN WRITTEN BY GORDON HUDELSON For years, Luxury Residential Design has been centered around enlarged spaces, more rooms, tons of wasted space, and very high-end finishes. Â However, in recent years, there has been a shift away from this approach of designing the home from the outside in, and we are, instead, seeing a trend towards homes

that are designed from the inside out.

Function is beginning to take a precedent over form, without form being sacrificed. This approach allows the designer the ability to find the true needs of the client in the planning phases, and design spaces that flow together seamlessly, thus eliminating the majority of the wasted space within the home. By looking at Tiny Home construction, you really begin to see this. In a Tiny Home, with space at a premium, every square inch is utilized. This approach is becoming more and more common throughout the Residential Design community, no matter the size of the home. HUNTER'S POINT PEARL HOMES & MARINA

Jessica: Hey everyone, Jessica Peterson here over from the luxury team, brokered by EXP Realty where we say, “Come, discover pleasure, comfort and joy enter in and around your home.” Today, I am so honored to have a private showing here. Unfortunately, the main filming was not able to take place so I am going to use my phone; raw and real video footage here and going ahead and asking questions. Thank you so much Monique for being here. I know you are the Director of Marketing here over here at Hunter’s Point, so thank you for being here. I had a great time chatting with you off video a little bit too so I am really really impressed with you and what everyone at Hunters Point has actually done. I have to say even my teenage daughter is here today who is on her way to a beach party. She said, “I never want to move. I love our community. We live right by the water as well. I love school. I would actually move because I am so much in love with this home so I can’t wait to go ahead and show it with people.” That’s really impressive. Monique: Nice, that’s great! Jessica: So anyhow, I know that you guys don’t really call this tiny houses, and I agree. It’s not really tiny houses. I look at it as luxury, simple, small houses, simple living. I know you guys are bringing luxury to a whole new concept. Can you expand on that a little bit more? Monique: Right, so mainly what we have done with this concept for a home is we have reduced the footprint of the house which automatically also reduced the carbon footprint of the house, because our core value of these houses are that energy efficiency and sustainability should be accessible to everybody not just on a very high price market. We want it to be on a luxury level still accessible for everybody.

So this smaller house which has 600 sq. ft. floor plan under air still comes with all the bells and whistles and has like a complete Google Nest smart system with every single Google Nest product that you can find on the market right now. It is an energy smart home, thanks to the Sonnen battery and storage system and power system. It’s really reducing the size of the house to make it more sustainable to create a more thoughtful way of living to reduce the carbon footprint and to generate our own energy without compromising anywhere when it comes to luxury. Jessica: Is this the first community that is, not really off the grid, but completely independent?

NOTE: Hunter's Point sells exclusively to a current list and is closed to the public at the time this article has been written.

"Be strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you need help, and brave enough to ask for it."

professional and volunteer for ambulance, fire, and law enforcement. They were sickened to see the rate of depression and suicide increase from ones who take care of us in our own communities.

First responders experience extraordinary stress within their profession due to exposure to traumatic events, which takes a toll on their physical and mental health and often leads to PTSD. A 2017 survey revealed that 85% of first responders experienced symptoms related to mental health issues, and 34% had received a formal mental health disorder diagnosis. They are often perceived as invincible public servants rather than human beings with complex emotional and family needs. They meet us on our worst days with expertise and bravery; but our culture expects them to be unaffected by the trauma they deal with on a daily basis.

According to the Colorado Department of Vital Statistics,

from 2004-2014, 196 first responders across the state took their own lives. A first responder is more likely to die by suicide than to die in the line of duty. A 2015 article in the Journal of the Emergency Medical Services revealed that 6.6% of first responders had attempted suicide—more than 10 times the rate in the general population.

911 For 911 exists to address—and ultimately prevent—this systemic crisis. They believe that confidentiality, extreme discretion, and cultural competency are critical to the work we do and our successful outcomes.

911 For 911 is expecting the need to grow significantly over the next three years, and data indicates clinicians and peer support members are on track to serve 10,000 first responders per year by 2020.

911 for 911 seeks: Community awareness, involvement and support for the first responders who face an increasingly difficult set of response circumstances and resulting emotional traumas. Funding to develop and sustain 911 For 911 programs and operations which serve the first responder community.

SIMPLE WAYS TO INCORPORATE EXERCISE IN YOUR LIFE

When visitors come to town, I like to put my tourist hat on and see some local sights. It’s an easy way of clocking your 10,000 steps for the day as you meander through unexplored museums, galleries and parks. Experience something new for a change of pace like hiking, kayaking or other outdoor sports.

I sat in the parking lot, terrified. My palms were sweaty, my heart was racing, my brain was going crazy. After ten minutes, I finally mustered up my 20 seconds of courage. It took a lot of courage to attend my first Zumba class. An hour later, I left a sweaty mess…a sweaty mess with a giant smile on my face.
