Freshmen, Display Your Abilities Now
More words of welcome to the members of '44 would be ·uperfluous. Freshmen, the faculty and student body have accepted you as embryo engineers hoping that you will uphold the traditions for which W. P. I. has been recognized throughout the world. As yet , you are green a nd have accomplished little. This is your chance to get started on the right foot a nd it is our hope to give you an inkling of your future ventures here. Knowing the path you wish to travel is a much more cer tain way of reaching the destination then to flounder aimlessly along the way. That is obvious and trite you might say, but it is to make those things obvious which once looked staggering, which now appear dHf1cult to grasp , and which will become obvious that you have e nrolled at Tech. Many of you are uncertain as to your choice or course whether it be mechanical, chemical, civil, or electrical engineering or possibly one of the other majors. To aid you in better understanding the opportunities before you, the student branches or the national engineering !tocieties desire your presence at their regular gatherings. You should see and feel the problems which real engineers encounter to know whether you are really interested in the fi eld. Of course, it is expected that you endeavor to fight hard in your studies since here you are laying the found ation of the life before you. Further advice in that direction will not be offered since advice too freely granted is worthless. Nobody could even intimate, however, that being a perpetual grind was sufficient preparation for an engineering career. In your four years on the Hill, you must and wiU realize that a proper equilibrium among s tudies, activities, and social life is not only a good idea to fondle with but is actually a prime requisite. Go out for that team, join this or that organization ftotrl while your energetic classmates a re s till as green a s yourself. Don't procrastinate in thinking that next yea r will be soon enough. It will be too late then. Worcester l'fech is your college and you will realizr the truth of this more fully us you continue your stay a t the Institute. lt is difficult to find organizations outside of class rooms which depend upon faculty leadership. Students are encouraged to practice the qualities of initiative, leadership, and tt>amwork which are so essential to an engineer who must deal with people throughout his postgraduate years. Why, you ask, does everyone on this campus strive lo induct the poor Freshmen into so many nctivities? The a nswer, which you should remember C\'en if you have nlready forgotten everything else in this editorial, i" ( I ) that by diversity a nd contms t you may apply yourself with greater \'igor to your cho~cn field , (2) that life a t college may he a joy rather than a drudge, (3) that industn •. which always seeks well -rounded men , will lind them in you at th~ end of t his four year period. · Good Luc k lo you! __ _
