The Sl i de o f H i lls PROJECT YEAR | SPRING 2021 PROJECT TYPE | RETAIL LOCATION | THE NOGUCHI MUSEUM, NY SITE AREA | 2,000 ft ²
Inspired by the Noguchi’s “Black Hills” sculpture, this AKARI lamp display system features the design elements of asymmetrical curvature, height variation, layering, slope, and scale. The height variation used in the display system helps to display the different dimensions and types of AKARI lamps. Lamps can be not only hung from the ceiling or stood on the floor, but also hung on the top of the display system, and stood on the platforms with various level. The shape of each platform is oval which is related to the round-cornered rectangular shape of “Black Hills”.

FURNITURE SELECTION
SYSTEM OF ‘BLACK HILLS’
The contrast between smoothness and dapples creates the unique texture. The surface of Granite is rough and rugged, which expresses the imperfect and instability of nature.

The selection of bamboo as a fabrication material for the display system is inspired from the bamboo ribbon frame of AKARI lamps. It explores the material quality of being-light-weight, flexible, and durable - so that the system can be both robust but easily moved.
04
BACK
To achieve the core requirement of the client - flexiblity, the design focuses on the movable display system, and various floor plan modes which include the display mode and event mode.
05
MAIN DISPLAY AREA
MEZZANINE
When in the display mode, people can overlook the whole main display area from the mezzanine. If it is in the event mode, people can also look down at the screen.
06
The flooring of the up-stair cafe is Tatami. People can drink tea here and enjoy the hanging Akari at the same time. They can both sit on the chair, sit on the ground, or lay down. It is a semi-private space for guests.

‘Curvetory’ means a ‘curved observatory’. This curved building in a open wild field is topped with a folded roof and incorporates curved glass partition and four levels that allow people to play, meditate, and observe natural surroundings. The void of glass partition frames the view in different perspectives. As you move around, you discover the protruding curved glass makes the building feel like it’s dancing.
