Dear Valued Stakeholders: The 2022-2023 school year is only a couple of short months away, and one of the core missions of Wayne RESA is to support our constituent districts, public school academies, and community-based organizations in their work to improve teaching and learning. In service to our vision of Leading…Learning for All, we have prepared this collection of over 300 professional development opportunities that we plan to offer Wayne County educators, administrators, staff, and community partners in the upcoming school year. This represents an initial listing of opportunities based on the needs that you have identified with your constituents. As your priorities evolve throughout the school year, Wayne RESA will continue developing new opportunities for growth. This initial collection contains 192 offerings that provide State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs), which can be used for renewal and progression of certificates and licenses issued by MDE. Thanks to a combination of grants and initiatives that support General Education and Special Education activities, 208 offerings are being provided at no cost. To meet the diverse schedule, safety, and comfort levels of constituents, we are offering nearly 180 opportunities fully online. Sustained professional development is the most impactful means of support for educators and administrators across Wayne County, and Wayne RESA provides research-based, best-practice professional development and growth opportunities across a wide range of topics. We provide leadership services to strengthen administrators’ knowledge and skills for more intentional and purposeful leadership practices that impact teacher performance and student achievement. We also provide sessions that outline multiple ways in which assessments can be utilized to help teachers and leaders make decisions. Our curriculum and instruction offerings cover a wide array of subjects and provide unique opportunities for educators to enhance their curricula and approaches to teaching. Additionally, we provide training and support for the most advanced technology that can be implemented to remove traditional barriers to student achievement. We offer support for constituent districts to foster free and appropriate special education services for the eligible students with disabilities in Wayne County. Our offerings also include techniques to ensure success for all students, including Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). We believe every child should have equitable access to high-quality education. That is why we offer guidance with ensuring safe and healthy schools, supporting special populations, empowering English learners, and maintaining inclusive school climate and culture. Education begins well before a child’s first day of Kindergarten, which is why we offer extensive support to our early childhood program teachers, providers, and community partners. These offerings are designed to support every crucial element of successfully administering and maintaining high quality learning environments for our youngest Wayne County residents. Your questions or points of interest regarding this catalog are invited and should be directed to Beth Gonzalez, Associate Superintendent at (734) 334-1583 or at gonzalb@resa.net . Of course, you are always encouraged to contact me directly if you have any additional questions or comments about any aspect of Wayne RESA. Sincerely,

Who are newcomers and long-term English Learners (ELs), and how can we best meet their needs? Research has demonstrated that it is vital to identify and establish programming for these two groups of multilingual learners in order to foster their language development and academic progress. We will explore first and second language acquisition theory and practice, the silent period for newcomers, differentiation and accommodations, and progress monitoring. The EL Team will provide you with strategies and tools to best serve these two groups of multilingual learners.

Readers at all levels require explicit instructional support to extract information from complex texts and to accelerate their reading skills. In addition, providing ample opportunities for adolescents to engage in social learning environments is foundational to the development of their literacy skills. This series is designed for secondary educators and involves unpacking strands of Scarborough’s Rope as they relate to close and critical reading, including language structures, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge. Math Recovery (AVMR1) Refresher & Networking

Equity in Mathematics

“Beginning in Kindergarten and continuing into college, mathematics is not just an academic subject: It’s a key mechanism in the distribution of opportunity. Even as math expectations can serve as a foundation for academic success by supporting quantitative literacy, they can also operate as a filter that literally stops many students in their educational tracks” (Just Equations, 2018). During this course we will explore and define the meaning of Equity in Mathematics Instruction and how our beliefs and practices influence student access to meaningful mathematics. Audience: Math Teachers, Teacher Leaders, and Administrators

For teachers who have previously been trained in the diagnostic assessment and associated interventions from Math Recovery related to addition and subtraction (AVMR1). We are offering a refresher course to support teachers in another reflection on the learning progression for multiplication and division, opportunities to identify student learning needs and choose appropriate interventions to support and extend student learning. A virtual meeting will be held to engage in a refresher of the learning, followed by asynchronous modules for teachers to engage in at a time that is convenient for their needs. MTSS in Addition and Subtraction (AVMR1)

Course Number: 4835 Cost: $180.00 Dates: 10/5/22.......................................Times: 9:00 AM–3:00 PM 11/2/22...................................................9:00 AM–3:00 PM 12/7/22...................................................9:00 AM–3:00 PM

This offering supports teachers’ assessment and interventions for Tier II and Tier III. MTSS in Mathematics supports teams of K-5 teachers to implement Tier II and III instruction for addition and subtraction in the elementary mathematics classroom. Teachers learn to utilize a diagnostic assessment from Math Recovery that targets students’ current understanding in mathematics for the focus mathematics topics. Participants are then supported to recognize students’ progress during Tier I mathematics instruction, and to implement Tier II and Tier Ill interventions based on progress monitoring.

MTSS in Mathematics for Fractions is designed to be a collaborative learning space for teachers as we learn in and from classrooms. As we implement best practices in Tier I related to the development of fractions, we will gather student work to engage in formative assessment and use that information in conjunction with a learning progression for fractions to determine next steps for instruction. The learning is designed to rely on artifacts that come from Wayne County classrooms. Throughout the course, expect to bring evidence of student understanding of fractions, engage in discussions based on learning progressions, and choose interventions targeted at student learning needs.

Adapting Science Units for Phenomenon-Based Instruction (Self-paced Online)

This asynchronous course is designed to help teachers create three-dimensional units of study aligned to their current curriculum and incorporate the tools and strategies necessary to meet the expectations set forth in the Michigan Science Standards (MSS). Teachers will engage in a process to map the MSS to their current curriculum to identify what the expectations are and where they align. Teachers will then re-engineer a current unit of instruction using processes from Ambitious Science Teaching (provided), which will guide them in their process of adapting instruction for equitable 3D learning.
