Welcome to yet another bumper issue; the Yetminster Wriggle Valley has certainly been busy with lots of interesting and varied events. Please bear in mind that December/January is another Out and About double issue when you are sending in your Diary - October onwards news and views. Thanks for the super cover photo of the superb country pursuit of sheep Regular Meeting & Activities racing which took place in Hermitage over the summer. A good time was had by one and all. General News We have included a survey about the Yetminster Fair and what you feel about it; it St Andrew’s Primary School would be great if you could fill it in; we need your feedback. Chetnole is also pursuing the News from our Churches thought of having a community shop; if you feel you would like to support this project read Benefice Church Services the article on p13. Similarily the St Andrew’s swimming Pool is in need of refurbishment in Leigh Weather Watch order to become a pool for the community, Planning Applications see p 57. We are hoping to upload our archive ...gone gardening… magazines, in their entirety, onto the newly created Wriggle Valley Magazine website Club News which would then be available for all to view. We would like to launch this as soon as possible but as always would welcome your thoughts by the end of October so that our website can go “live” in November. The season of mellow fruitfulness is upon us and the cool summer seems to suit our area judging by the good crop of fruit on the trees and hedges. Congratulations to Jonny & Julie Gibbs on the birth of their grandson William to proud parents Tom & Emma. The next big event is the Auction of Promises in aid of Batcombe Church to be held in Leigh Village Hall on Saturday 12 November (more info in next issue) The first Solar Panels in Batcombe have just been installed at the Friary; they are hoping for great savings on their electricity bill. First and foremost for this issue, Gerald Potts has asked me to pass on his huge gratitude for all the friendships established both to himself and to Jasper in his 18 years in the village and for the more than occasional help with the not infrequently errant Jasper. He has sadly,but necessarily, had to leave Chetnole, but hopes to be back often and to see many of you in Sherborne. Beware the gallant buggy! spot for him (including myself) - I have a vivid memory of him whizzing by our house each day on his bicycle yelling, “Morning Grandpas!” at my father and father-in-law as they built one of our numerous extensions twelve years ago. Good luck Gerald, take care and see you soon. Well done to Stan Darley and Team Darley (comprising of son Adam, his wife Clare and her parents, Pete and Sandie) for covering 15.3 miles by bicycle whilst taking part in the Churches Ride and Stride day on 10 September. During their arduous journey they managed to visit eight churches and two weddings no less. Stan is particularly proud of himself as he tells me his bike came out of skip! 5

The new school term has got off to a rocky start for some of our Chetnole sixth formers attending The Gryphon School in Sherborne. Sadly, and not without some degree of frustration for students and parents alike, their places on the school bus supplied by Dorset County Council have been withdrawn as part of a costcutting exercise. Had Bella Neate-Clegg and Steve Crumpler not responded without delay to liaise with the Gryphon and secure a minibus for the eight stranded children who knows how they would have got to school this term? I would personally like to extend my gratitude to them for doing such a great job under such pressure and I am sure the other parents would join me in doing so. The cuts have even reached the children of sleepy little Chetnole.

On a brighter note, what a wonderful Flower Show we had; the sun shone (for most of it anyway) and the turn-out by villagers and visitors both young and old was a heart-warming sight. What topped it all for me though was my first prize in the boiled fruit cake competition – my first First prize ever! Never did success taste quite so good! Enjoy your month and don’t forget to eat your breakfast at the village hall on the 29 October and raise money for Save the Children at the same time. See you down there. We are very pleased that our very own pub, the Chetnole Inn has, for the second year in a row , won the coveted award of ‘Best Dining Pub 2011’ at this year’s Taste of Dorset Awards, beating 123 other pubs who were nominated. The award recognises Dorset’s top food pubs with an emphasis on fantastic quality and locally sourced ingredients. Mike, landlord, said, “We are so thrilled to win this Award as we strive to create not just an interesting, well thought out and delicious menu but to source the products for the menu as locally as we can as this keeps the food miles low. - Thank you. “ So, it’s official, there is no need to travel further than Chetnole! First Aid Training in Chetnole

Many thanks to Sue Morgan for organising a morning of first aid training with St John Ambulance at the Village Hall on 12 September. A group of twelve people listened and watched professionallyqualified first aid trainer Mark Stanley as he instructed us on various vital resuscitation techniques and how to spot signs of heart attack and stroke. Mark, who has been with St John Ambulance’s for twelve years and is based in Poole, also showed us how to deal with other medical emergencies such as choking, bleeding, burns and broken bones. The three hours raced by thanks to his interesting and informative delivery and we can be forgiven a few moments of mirth when we all took turns to roll each other into the recovery position – it wasn’t the getting down on the floor so much as the trying to get back up again! However, merriment aside, we were all left feeling that although we live in a beautiful and tranquil part of Dorset, we are also slightly vulnerable in that Chetnole is at least fifteen minutes away for an

ambulance to get here quickly and it would be reassuring if some members of our community could be called upon in an emergency situation to assess the casualty, call an ambulance and give first aid if needed. Sue informed us that Evershot already has a number of village residents who are trained First Responders having undertaken a training course qualifying them to do just this. Evershot also has a village defibrillator machine which, Mark told us, could increase the chance of survival of a heart attack victim to 50%. Sue suggested it would be a good idea for Evershot’s First Responders to talk to Chetnole residents who are interested in the scheme and will liaise and get back to us. St John’s Ambulance can provide further training courses specific to this in conjunction with Great Western Ambulance Service. Sue Morgan would like anyone who is interested in learning first aid techniques to contact her as, if enough interest is shown, she would like to repeat this invaluable course in the new year. Is there some life still in the Horse? I suppose the only purpose in flogging a dead horse is to see if there’s still some life in it. Is the idea of a community shop in Chetnole dead, or is there still a bit of life left? Have we really run out of options, proved conclusively that a community owned, community run local shop wouldn’t be “sustainable” in this particular village? Other villages, helped by the Plunkett Foundation, some 250, have opened community shops successfully. Why not Chetnole? It’s the one option that hasn’t been tried. Must it make a profit, break even, or make a small loss? Clearly making a profit would be good, but just breaking even or making a small loss could still, in the bigger picture, be a success. But you would have to see the bigger picture. That, I would suggest, involves a lot more than simple finance, there’s the social gain for the village. A place you’ll see your neighbours regularly, a chance for a chat. It gives you a reason for a walk, maybe afterwards drop in the pub or the village hall. There’s convenience. With fuel going up and up, the idea of popping in to get your newspaper, a bottle of milk, and some great chocolates to take round to a friend’s party without needing the car is really attractive. Of course, it would also serve some locals bereft of transport - here there is a real need. There’s involvement. To be successful, the shop would need lots of volunteers, to get it off the ground, to serve in it, to ‘amuse’ each other and the customers, and to enjoy serving in it for years to come. There’s of course, the finance. We’d need to raise money to get it off the ground, but be aware, Savills the property

company, have calculated that residential property in a village with a local shop gain around 5% on property values, so it could turn out to be an excellent investment. So how could we take this forward, if anybody was interested? My suggestion is that instead of looking backwards at Chetnole’s history, we should get out and have a serious look at some of the successful community shops in Dorset area. I’m thinking at the moment of a “day out” in a minibus, visiting and talking to some of the people who run these shops to discover the secrets of their success, stopping at a pub for lunch and generally comparing notes. If, after getting a lot more of a feel for the challenges involved, there’s general disinterest I do think we could finally declare the horse dead – an ex-horse if you will and I promise never to bring the subject up again. However if you’re interested in at least exploring the idea, please give us a ring to register your interest. We can then start trying to organise an informative day trip. 64th Chetnole Annual Flower Show Our much-loved past chairman, Margaret Murray, used to instil into all committee members that the Chetnole Flower Show and Fête should be “fun, fun, fun”! I think we got it right this year. The show was ‘fun, fun, fun’ from start to finish! From 8 o’clock onwards keen entrants of the show were busy displaying their Mary Prodger being presented with a new exhibits casting a careful eye at rival trophy this year, which is in memory of Joanna entries. The Wedding of Sarah Head to Rob On Friday 22 July, the bells of St. Peter's Church in Chetnole rang out to celebrate the wedding of Sarah - daughter of Chetnole residents John & Mary Head - and Rob Bingham, doctor of physics, from Bentley. The celebrations had started the previous evening with a party for some Chetnole villagers in the garden of The Chetnole Inn. The wedding service was conducted by the Rev. Simon Brignall and a blessing was given by Father Richard Meyer. And the sun shone!

After the service, the bride and groom proceeded very sedately in a 1932 Cadillac to the wedding reception at Minterne House. A ceilidh in the evening rounded off a wonderful day. A luncheon party was held in the garden of "Wrigglebank" the following day for friends and family, some of whom had come from as far afield as the John and Mary Head are Canary Islands and Moscow. now relaxing. Sarah & Rob went to John Head Milan and the Italian Lakes for their honeymoon and will live in Bentley, Hants.

Chetnole Junior Boules 16 enthusiastic youngsters aged from 5 to 14 years, took part in the annual Junior Boules tournament on Chetnole Playing Field piste, on a sunny morning on 3 August. Members of Chetnole Chuckers were on hand to supervise, coach, referee [and feed] the competitors in three age groups. Many thanks are due to all the parents and grandparents who brought them along and stayed to watch and lend support. The attentiveness, focus and "will to win" was a joy to behold. In fact the only problem for 16

the organisers, was to convince the children that the arrival of lunchtime was a signal to stop playing, notwithstanding that all tournament games were already finished! The "gold" medal winners were Tom, 7, George, 9 and Megan, 14, seen in the photo with club Chairman Gordon. It is hoped to hold the event again next year, probably at the beginning of August. Chetnole Parish Plan The Chetnole & Stockwood Parish Plan Steering group held an information session on Sunday 11 Sept as part of the Photo Treasure Hunt in Chetnole village hall. We discussed the parish plan topics and aimed to recruit volunteers for the main actions resulting from last year’s published Plan. The topics discussed covered Transport issues, Community concerns, Environmental initiatives, Housing requirements and Leisure improvements. Pimms with Hymns We had a very successful Songs of Praise service on 7 August. It was taken by Michael Anderson for the second year running. Members of the congregation read the prayers and chose the hymns and the Church was full. The weather however was not so good and the heavens opened as the Service began and so the Pimms was drunk in Church Farm rather than outside it.

Sheep Racing Hermitage’s by now traditional sheep racing (see cover photo) on August Bank Holiday Monday attracted a record number of visitors, young, old and in-between, all of whom seem to have enjoyed the entertainment available in addition to the racing. The weather held fair, the sheep (and dogs – collies, agility dogs and gun dogs) ran and £1300 was raised. Hermitage is extremely grateful to all who helped and took part. Roger Hervey

The Leigh Fete OH YEA, OH YEA, were the opening cries from Alastair Chisolm, the Dorchester Town Crier who opened the Fete on the August Bank Holiday Sunday. To nobody’s surprise it rained from time to time but did not dampen the happy atmosphere. The Shoe String Band and the Appalachian Dancers had our feet tapping whilst Jean and Ted Gillingham played a wonderful cocktail of music throughout the afternoon.

Wildlife Conservation in Leigh – your chance to get involved In Leigh we are fortunate to have a few Sites of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI), one of which is Beer Mill Mead, on the Yetminster road. Each year it comes up for bid in the Candle Auction, probably the only such auction left in the country. When, as in most years the Conservation Group wins the auction, the site requires a few small work parties of effort in the winter to help preserve the variety of habitats. You may feel that you want to be involved in some way, perhaps just a little coppicing and path clearance in the winter The work programme was coordinated for many years by my father Stanley Waterfall and I assisted him in this. He had the vision to maintain this land in a species rich and environmentally sound manner for the enjoyment of local people.

It has a footpath alongside it and is a lovely peaceful spot, just off the road where you can watch tawny owl, or spotted flycatchers, study the wild flowers or just sit on the bench in the grass clearing amongst the oak trees. I became involved about 5 years ago as Dad’s health began to fail, but now with the death of both my parents and with me living in Sherborne I feel that I can no longer continue to give the effort to it that I used to. Therefore if there is a reader or a person known to you, who is interested in wildlife and conservation, and who feels that they can take on the coordination of activities associated with Beer Mill Mead, will they please contact me. Hog Roast The Leigh Hog Roast yet again proved a roaring success. This event the 5th - is fast becoming a legend! A balmy and warm July evening allowed around 200 local revelers to enjoy themselves fully. The hog was lusciously large, the salads piquant, the desserts quickly demolished and the beer, cider and wine copious. Any excess calories were soon burned off by dancing to Dog Ruff's performance of a series of nostalgically energetic classics from the 50's, 60's and 70's. All in all, it was a memorable evening.

Screenbites - Friday 4 November This is the third time Screenbites have come to Leigh Village Hall. The doors will open at 7pm, and there will be food tastings from a large range of producers before the film, which is called Tortilla. Rachel Welsh is making an appearance!!! A net profit of £1920 was made. This was shared between The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, St Margaret's Hospice, The Wriggle Valley Magazine and Leigh Village Hall. The Leigh Hog Roast Committee wishes to thank all those who worked so hard to prepare and run this excellent function. The general consensus was that the 2011 event was the best Hog Roast so far. News from the Old Vicarage The Old Vicarage has had a very busy time since our last report. We had a very successful lunch, Songs of Praise and cream teas with the Bishop of Sherborne. A quick pass round of the hat raised £120 for the Sudan appeal! The highlight of August was our netball tournament. Five teams took part, raising £735 for Leukaemia research! Thank you so much for everyone who helped make this event such an entertaining and successful afternoon. Kate’s cowgirls were overall winners with Emily’s pink ladies runners up; however Melissa’s team of hairdressers, a pack of fairies and some rather competitive Old ‘Uns lead by Annie Sinnott all added to the fun. During August we were entertained by the St. Andrew’s Singers and Gilly Wilson visited us on horseback. Our trip to West Bay was rather soggy, but an impromptu lunch at Washingpool farm shop and a visit to Broadwindsor craft centre turned the day around. A letter had been received from Leigh PCC regarding the future provision of graveyard space although it is understood that the PCC is in negotiation with a landowner regarding acquiring additional land and it was decided to await the outcome of this. Mr. Kevin Waterfall had informed the Parish Council that he does not feel able to carry on with coordinating activities at Beer 27

Mill Mead and asked that the Parish Council take on the responsibility. In view of the expense involved in obtaining Planning Permission for the siting of the recycling bin it was decided not to proceed. The Parish Council has been informed that as from 2012 the County Council will not be providing grit/salt for grit bins free of charge. Councillor Orchard had attended a meeting and was informed that Bridport Council have adopted a Lengthsman Scheme whereby Dorset County Council employ a man or men available to Bridport and surrounding villages for minor repairs and grass cutting in public spaces and they were looking at putting a similar scheme

together with Dorchester to serve all surrounding villages. Mr. Trevor Evans informed the meeting that the footpath to be a memorial to Stanley Waterfall will be footpaths 3, 4 and 8 although it is not yet open. Councillor Withycombe informed the meeting that the village hall grounds have been awarded outstanding status by Dorset Wildlife Trust and will be receiving a certificate shortly. District Councillor Junguis introduced himself as the new District Councillor. The date of the next meeting will be Tuesday 20 September at 7.30 p.m. in Leigh Village Hall. Margaret Read

Yetminster Fair - Applications for Funding The Fair Association was set up to promote the Yetminster Fair weekend and its associated activities. Funds raised during the year are used to support projects and activities within the local community and individual grants are given which range between £200 and £500. If you are an organisation that is seeking funding for a local project, or if you are an individual wanting help to undertake an activity of benefit to the community you are invited to write to the Association’s Chairman, via the WVM post box, with a short outline of your proposal and how this will benefit the community, together with an indication as to the amount of the funding you are seeking. Applications should be made before the 10 October for consideration by the Association at the AGM in October.

Yetminster & Ryme Intrinseca Parish Council Summary of Council Meeting 17 July 2011 The meeting was attended by eight councillors, Cllr Bevan, DCllr Lawrence, eight members of the public and the Clerk Allotments Mr Tuck and others highlighted that inequality of the allotment rents vis a vis that of the Sports Club. The Council has already agreed to reassess the Sports Club rent next year. Some discussion was held as to who owned the land under the terms of the bequest which is thought to have left the land to the Village not to the Parish Council. The Clerk would attempt to clarify what the will said and to take advice from DAPTC on the legality of the rental system. Theft from the allotments was also raised; it was pointed out that the Council could do nothing except inform the Police of the reports of theft. Providing the alleged thief had not breached his allotment agreement, of which there is no evidence, he cannot be ejected by the Council. Parking on Railway Bridge Mr Simon Jones suggested that there should be double yellow lines on the railway bridge. It was pointed out that it is highway policy not to have any yellow lines in villages; if vehicles are thought to be parked dangerously photos should be taken and passed to Cllr Knight. Council Website It was agreed that Banshee Technologies should be given the contract and that they would provide an

initial demonstration at the September council meeting. Grants The following grants were agreed: St Hippolytus Church £300 St Andrew’s Church £700 Sherborne C.A.B £100 AirAmbulance £100 Planning There were no contentious planning applications Diamond Jubilee 2012 Cllr Gould said he thought it was important that the village celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June 2012. He was happy to convene an initial meeting of interested parties in the later half of October; and would write to all the village organisations inviting them to attend. Helping Hands Helping Hands is an organisation being created in an attempt to provide specific support for local people. This initiative is attempting to assist people through short-term crises such as illness or injury and would take direct feeds from the Yetminster Health Centre and target support using a network of volunteers to people in need. The organisation, currently embryonic is not intended to impinge upon the excellent work of other support networks such as the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Institute or neighbourhood schemes who have an emphasis on neighbourly kindness. The organisation will be delivering a service to people in the Wriggle Valley area. Volunteers will provide specific help and support in the following areas:

Vietnam to Cambodia for the British Heart Foundation In early November, Yetminster resident Simon Cridland will be taking part in a 300 mile cycle ride in support of the British Heart Foundation. He needs to raise at least £3,250 to take part, of which £1,600 will cover a proportion of the travel and accommodation costs. On this challenging long distance bike ride, the cyclists will cover between 50 and 70 miles a day for five days. As November approaches, you will increasingly see Simon out and about along the local lanes in a desperate attempt to get into shape!

The fundraising is equally challenging and you may already have seen Simon and his wife, Valerie, at various fundraising events such as the St Andrew's School Summer Fair and the Yetminster Fair, either selling or raffling items kindly donated by local residents and businesses. They have also held three car boot sales and a cake sale at Dorchester Hospital. Welcome back… A big welcome back to all who belong to the St Andrew’s Church of England Primary School family. Firstly, I would like to welcome all of our children back. A special welcome to all in Reception, the new starters at St Andrew’s Wriggle Valley Pre-School and the new children who are in classes throughout main school. I hope your start has been happy. There have also been some changes over the summer, to our staff and our building. We welcome Mellina Wall in Chestnut class, Melissa Lane in Holly class and Sam Willis in Ash Class. ible Sunday falls on 23 October this year, a perfect day to remember with thanks and gratitude the creation of the King James or authorized version of the bible in 1611, 400 years ago. Alan G Thomas in his ‘Great Books and Book Collectors’, remarked that ‘No book has had a greater influence on the English Language’. Many famous people appear to agree with this remark. Winston Churchill called it a ‘masterpiece’. Samuel Coleridge Taylor claimed its study would ‘keep any writer from being vulgar, in point of style’. Charlton Heston, the renowned and somewhat grisly American film actor thought it was ‘an enormous force in shaping the development of the English language’. Why Heston, out of many hundreds of film stars? He was reading it while preparing to play Moses in the Hollywood epic ‘The Ten Commandments’. William Shakespeare was certainly influenced by much of its phraseology. What fascinates me at the present time, is how so many of its expressions

rolls, that the solution to their problem was ‘be fruitful and multiply’, (Genesis 1.22), whereupon a lady in the front row retorted that she had had four children , and therefore how many more did I expect her to produce. There are literally hundreds of expressions used in our everyday conversation which can be traced back to the King James Bible. Whilst it was not the first bible to be translated into English, once it was available and read in churches each Sunday , followed by the Book of Common prayer produced in 1662, the ordinary people who sat in the pews or on the rush strewn floor of the nave of the parish church could understand the word of God and programme when the worship him in their own author was trying to impress his readers with the language. It led of course to the fact that the championship demand that every child in is not necessarily won by the land should be taught the swift but by those who can endure the long season. the Four R’s, Reading, (w)Riting, (a)Rithmetic and I once told a packed Religion, hence the creation village hall where the of the Church of England’s inhabitants of the village National Society whose sole had assembled to protest aim was to bring education against the proposal to within reach of every child close their church village in the land. The author was right. As so often happens, an unusually fine spring was followed by a damp and dull summer. Rainfall Unlike earlier months, rainfall in July and August was close to normal. July was 1% up, at 45mm (1.8”) but, while August was much wetter, with 74mm (2.9”), this was still only 2% more than we usually enjoy (or suffer) in ‘high summer’. The wettest days were July 6, with 16mm, (0.6in.) and the same again on August 18. Temperatures Average temperatures were 6% below normal in July, and 10% down in August. Without entering the debate about global warming, Leigh can complain that maximum temperatures in July have not reached 30C (86F) since 2009, and

Sunshine July and August were both dull months, with measurable sunshine for only 23% of the daylight hours. Total ‘sun hours’ were 19% below average in July and 26% down in August. The sunniest day in July was the 3rd, with 12.5 hours of sunshine; the best August could do was 8.6 hours on the 10th. Daily averages were only 3.7 hours in July and 3.2 hours in August. Pressure and wind speeds The barometric pressures in July and August were close to normal and lacked the ‘abnormal events’ that can excite the weather men. July was very calm, with wind speeds 23% lower than usual, but August was 36% calmer, with a peak wind speed of only 18mph. Philip Bryan

â&#x20AC;Śgone gardeningâ&#x20AC;Ś Autumnal tidy up ctober â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Summer has given way to autumn and the flowering borders are starting to look tired. The trees are sporting some very fine autumnal colour, reds, gold and orange and in between cutting and splitting logs for the wood store to warm the hearth, this is the time of year that we can still be extremely busy in the garden tidying up. The lawn needs its last cut and your turf needs aerating. In the borders the last of the woody herbaceous needs cutting back and any rose leaves with black spot need rounding up and burning. It is also time to choose some flowering bulbs for the borders in springtime. If you are short of space then you might have winter pots and baskets to plant up instead. There is a whole host of plants with wonderful evergreen colour that you can use down at the local garden centres as well as a fantastic array of flowering spring bulbs, daffodils, aconites, crocus, anenomes, and tulips to name a few. Now is the time of year to plant your bulbs to ensure that you have bright cheerful borders in the spring when there is very little in flower. Wall flower plants can be planted now for spring colour. As well as colour in the garden you should think about structure. Did the garden serve your needs this year? Perhaps it needs some re-thinking. Maybe it needs to be re-designed or re-organised. This is a good time to think and perhaps get the grunt of it done, so that in the springtime you can start with a fresh new look.

The vegetable garden needs to be cleared of all debris and dying foliage so that the birds can feast on the bugs and snails left behind. Root vegetables like parsnips benefit from cold frosts, it improves their flavour so leave these in the ground and use them when you want them. Garlic and shallots can be planted out as well as broad beans for harvest next year. Transplant spring cabbages and leeks to their final positions. Empty out the tired tomato pots and hoist the pickling pot onto the stove. Whatever remnants you have left from the garden have a go at making some chutney. The sweet smell of apples, tomatoes, mustard and ginger bubbling on the stove will fill you with a sense of pride and achievement and a glorious accompaniment for hams and pork. Yetminster Irish Dancers. After the rigours of Yetminster Fair, the wet magnificence of Sherborne Castle Fair, the fundraising Community Concert in Yeovil, and the relaxing autumn break, the dancers are working hard for the new season. First, a brand new festival in Westbury, Wilts. We should be flattered that someone appreciates the charm, pleasure, efficiency, and reliability of the performance that our young dancers regularly produce. Ideal for launching a new venture! Next they practice hard for the in class competitions in November, the only time we look inwardly to enhance their dancing skills. Although challenged they support

and cheer their rivals successes in an old fashioned way that seems at odds with sporting life today. Then it’s hard rehearsal for the March concert in the Octagon…, but there will be news of that later…. Bob Common

Hermitage & Hilfield W.I. On 6 September, Brian Bates came to Hermitage and Hilfield W.I. to give an illustrated talk entitled ‘Just another name on the list’ – the stories behind the names on Dorchester’s Great War memorials. He had obviously researched in depth and is shortly to publish a book on the subject. 72

He began the talk with a history of Dorchester during this period and a slide show of the war memorials, including one in the Post Office, designed by Thomas Hardy. He then went on to pick out individual names, including only one woman, a nurse called Constance Hodges, and tell us a little about their background. We had a number of visitors from other W.Is

and from Hermitage, who all seemed to enjoy the evening, in spite of the sombre topic. The next meeting will be in the Village Hall on 4 October at 7.30pm, when there will be a demonstration of paint decoration on cakes. New members will be warmly welcomed. Christine Dickerson

Wriggle Valley Benefice Mothers’ Union In July we held a short Wave of Prayer service in Hermitage Church and then in August again at Hermitage we had a Worldwide Day of Prayer service led by Prebendary John Parfitt followed by a shared picnic lunch and a walk around Hermitage – a lovely get together. At the beginning of September Rosie Guy and Teresa Bramley came to speak to the group on the work of the Street Pastors in Yeovil. It was fascinating to hear about their extensive training and Rosie listed all the things they take out on the streets with them in a rucksack eg. torches, flipflops, notebooks, blankets, water, disposable gloves, dustpan and brush, mobile phone and lollies!! A group of 4-5 patrol every Friday and Saturday evenings in Yeovil starting at 10pm and finishing about 3am. There are

The Street Pastors work very closely with the local police and since they started in 2009 there has been a remarkable drop in incidents in the centre of Yeovil at weekends. They wear a distinctive uniform and cap which the CCTV cameras can pick out if an incident occurs. Amongst all the bad news we hear, it was so good to hear of something positive. In October we are holding our Jumble Sale on the 1st at Leigh Village Hall when we hope to raise money for our Overseas charity. Yetminster and Ryme Garden, Art and Craft Society highlight for me was acting as steward to the judging of the cakes and preserves. I have an incurable sweet tooth and I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t resist a tiny morsel of each. I would have happily given first prize to them all! This year we had a bumper show with classes for crafts, painting and photography, and visitor numbers were well up on last year. The cream teas were as popular as ever and, with extra space given over to the Oscar and Reuben who are six and three, tea area, the afternoon drifted into winning first and third prizes for their cup cakes rather a sociable occasion!
