I begin with some very sad news this month. On 19 October Tony Woodford of Charing Cross Farm passed away having been poorly in the Willows at the Yeatman Hospital, Sherborne for just over four weeks. Tony and Jean and their family have farmed in Chetnole since 1982 and we send our condolences to them all. I also have to sadly
report the death of Mr Doyle of Neals Lane to whose family we also send our wishes. Doug Frampton of The Nook has also been poorly in November and we send him best wishes for a speedy recovery along with Rosemary Burden who has been in hospital recently. Get well soon. We also bid goodbye to Richard and Marigold Holy-Hasted who have lived here for many years – good luck to you both in your new home. wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 5

I am also saddened to report the death of Paul Horsey on Sunday 13 November at the Old Vicarage. Paul was 85 years old and he lived in the village all of his life. He was a hugely-respected and active member of the community; having been a church warden, member of the parish council and chairman of the cricket club amongst other things. I can remember his gentle manner and kindness towards his fellow villagers and he will be greatly missed in Chetnole. We will be featuring a full tribute to Paul in our next issue but in the meantime we send our condolences to Paul’s wife Kathleen and their family, many of whom still live here in the village. New Chetnolians Exciting news! Chetnole has no less than three new families! We welcome Tim Wells, Natasha Kittleson-Clifford and their children Georgia, Alice and Arthur who have moved into 4 Grove Cottages. The Berry family are living elsewhere in the village until their new home has been constructed in a village not too far away from here. We also welcome Claire Murphy and her partner Kevin Foy plus their baby boy Louis who have also moved into “Lanes End”. Claire grew up here and has returned after many years to be closer to family. Claire runs the Acupressure Centre in Bath and in January will be working from home offering acupressure and massage. She trained in California and Thailand and offers a wide range of treatments including: oil massage with acupressure, Jin Shin, Zen Shiatsu & Face lift massage. Please see her advert on p7 for more details. Last but not least we send a warm welcome to Stephanie and Nils Wikstrom at 1 Foy’s Cottages. Stephanie (who is from California) and Nils (who is Swedish) are staying in the village whilst they search for a home in the UK. We wish them luck in

You may have noticed that the boundary wall of St. Peters C hurch adjacent to the road has deteriorated over the last few years. A recent inspection by our church architect confirmed the need for urgent repairs. The work has to be carried out by a stonemason approved by the appropriate authorities, and having approached several suitable contractors we will shortly appoint one and hope that the work can start next spring.
Due to the extent and skilled nature of the work, we need to find over £25,000 to repair/ refurbish around three quarters of the wall. We have approached several charities and grantawarding bodies, and together with our existing church fabric fund, we have already raised about half the amount needed. Since the amount required is well beyond our normal running expenses we will shortly be mounting a fund-raising campaign

CHETNOLE VILLAGE HALL Don’t Forget - Artsreach, Thursday Chetnole Village Hall entertains in style What a great October week in Chetnole Village Hall for entertainment! The Artsreach performance on the 20th by Matt Harvey was full of quick thinking, brilliant wit and humour. It was surely one of the best Artsreach nights we've had. On the 21st, the inter-village quiz [won by a Chetnole team incidentally] was also described by many as thoroughly entertaining and well organised by the Yetminster Quizmaster, Harvey Rowbottom. The hall was filled again on 22 for the first "Chetnole Jazz Cafe" - hopefully the first of many to come. Another enjoyable evening, especially for the local jazz aficionados. The Village Hall team deserve a big thank you for all three evenings as such events do not happen without a lot of effort behind the scenes. Well done everyone! Gordon Ratcliffe 10
1 Dec The Mellstock Band - they have enteretained audiences all over the world, so we are fortunate to have them playing for us in Chetnole. Nearly all the music is from Dorset tradition, linked by poems and stories from the works of Thomas Hardy and the Dorset poet William Barnes. As always, they sing, tell tales and play fiddle, concertina, oboe, clarinet and serpent! Not to be missed! Chetnole Village Hall For Hire Chetnole Village Hall is a well maintained Traditional Village Hall, with some modern features of New Village Halls. There is plenty of crockery and cutlery and the new electric cooker and microwaves are useful if you wish to arrange providing your own food. A large pull-down screen hangs above the stage should you wish to have your own film show. Tony Woodford 8 August 1923 – 19 October 2011
Tony was born on a farm in the village of Stone in Buckinghamshire. He was at Aylesbury Grammar School when war broke out and left early to work full-time on the farm with his father and older brother. I came to work on the farm on 16 February 1944 when he was twenty and I was seventeen. It was six years before we married in London on 28 March 1950 and we moved into Willow Cottage on the grounds of the farm. Both Jimmy and Carolyn were born while we lived there. Just before Carolyn was a year old we moved across the road to Manor Farm where we lived when the children were growing up, until the streetlights came and Stone became a suburb of Aylesbury. The decision was made to move to the West Country and Tony bought West
Batsworthy near South Molton, Devon. They were very happy years during which Carolyn married Michael but the farm was in a very remote situation and rather reluctantly, after much searching in 1982 we came to Chetnole. In 1985 Jimmy married Sue and after nearly thirty years the family has grown – six grandchildren and one great-grandson. The herd had to be sold and sheep took their place. By this time Jimmy was the farmer and Tony the consultant. Even during his last few days Tony was asking which field the sheep were in, did they have enough grass and had he remembered to repair the water-trough? He became frustrated and took an interest in watching cookery programmes which led to his experimenting with new culinary ideas and caused friction in the kitchen! It was not until this year that he really started to go on a downward path, gradually getting more frail and frustrated as his body but not his mind was wearing out. He spent just over four weeks in Yeovil District Hospital and The Willows at the Yeatman Hospital in Sherborne where he was very well looked after. He died in a single room in The Willows with his family around him. So having started married life in Willow Cottage, sixty one years later he ended his journey in The Willows. He leaves a tremendous void in the lives of all his family which can never be filled and he will never be forgotten. We like to believe he is resting in peace. Maybe there are cows and sheep where he is and he will be giving instructions about their welfare.

“Is Chetnole now a village with no heart?” Sue Dona certainly thinks so which is why she and her fellow Chetnolians are making moves to bring a Community Shop to the village. Plans are very much in their early stages and much research is being undertaken on the subject but we believe that the “shop” would become the heart of Chetnole; providing our community with a muchneeded centre where both village-residents and those passing through will be able to meet socially as well as buying those last minute or forgotten items we all need throughout the week. Somewhere to take a stroll down the road to each day to chat and catch up with other people. This can be invaluable to people living on their own, especially in the winter months during which they may not see or speak to anyone all week. Chetnole is already a lively village but a shop enhances a village’s sociability factor by providing its residents with the opportunity to meet and get to know each
other where perhaps before their paths would not have crossed. In addition, estate agents say that a shop increases the value of the area’s properties by 5% (work out what 5% of your house’s value is!) and so is an attractive village amenity. There is a lot of help available for a Community Shop with grants, shares, volunteer support etc. Sue is convinced that with our help we can mend the “broken heart of the village” and would like to contact us directly for our opinion in the near future. Having been to the very inspiring Plunkett Foundation seminar and met likeminded people who realise the importance of a “heart” for rural villages in the shape of a community-run shop and heard about the help, support and funding that is out there, Sue feels even more so that it can be done. What a great day we all had; all full of excitment and raring to go, we took to the streets of Portsmouth and completed The Great South Run. We all had good times and were happy; it was lovely to have Rob and Claire Banford who came along to cheer us on the way and also my parents who cheered us on at 8 and half miles. A big thankyou to everyone who sponsored us, we were hoping to raise £1,000 for St Margarets hospice but to date it is a fantastic £2,300.00 .

Chetnole & Stockwood Parish Council Superfast Broadband 2 The Issue You may not have heard, but the Government plans to develop a plan to make superfast broadband available across most of the country. It has set up Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) to oversee the project and contract for the infrastructure. Please see article on p42. It plans to fund half of the cost, with local authorities meeting the other half. This sum would be sufficient to meet the needs of 95% of the properties (business and residential) in the County. It will supply the infrastructure; the cabling to local exchanges and necessary modification to these exchanges, and the local exchange cabinets required. The Proposal Dorset County Council needs to make a detailed submission to BDUK for the funding. To make a good submission, DCC is going to need good inputs from its communities. Any we might make would be through West Dorset District Council, who are getting organized to co-ordinate the inputs. Leigh has already set up a steering group to support WDDC and DCC. Chetnole’s Part In Chetnole, after discussion with Leigh, we have decided to submit data to WDDC to support their part of the bid. So we will be seeking three lots of information from residents of Chetnole. 1 We would like to know who already has a proven ongoing need for good broadband. Chetnole 4x4 Winter Rota Joe Meier of Stockwood Mill is once again co-ordinating a rota of four-wheeldrive owners in the Chetnole area who are happy to be called upon if this winter brings a few weather-related problems again. He sees their role being one that is happy to assist those who are unable to travel due to lack of mobility/age or lack of vehicle to manage the task eg driving people to the doctors or hospital for normal appointments or delivering essential shopping/coal. There are currently six vehicle-owners on the rota and details are yet to be finalised such as what should be carried in each car to ensure it is prepared for all eventualities; who is the first point of contact; insurance and other questions. Spooky goings on in Bills Wood On arrival in the car park you followed the footpath into the woods, you were at once greeted by many pumpkins of all shapes and sizes, different faces cut into each one and some even decorated with sweets. Orange and black balloons decorated the trees to help you find you way through. The light was just fading and the woods came to life when all the pumpkins were lit. On the way through we met a witch, a ghost and several wizards, what fun! As you made your way further the noise from excited children and adults could be heard. 20
On entering a clearing there were well over 150 people enjoying a bonfire, drinks, and food being served from the barbecue under a canopy to keep any unexpected wet weather off. Adults and children were in fancy dress. The children were enjoying fun and games and it was a time for people to catch up with friends and family. A fancy dress competition was held along with the best pumpkin. What a lovely way to spend a few hours. The weather held, just, and a fantastic time was had by all who attended. Richard climbed aboard his digger and within minutes it was well away again. We are only a small community but when we all get together its a fantastic event. Well here we are – the ‘first’ and the ‘last’ (but not in that order!). The ‘last’ being December and the ‘first’ being January. I write this on Remembrance Sunday after sharing a memorable meaningful service with our friends from Chetnole, followed by the 90th Birthday Celebrations of the 22

News from the Old Vicarage Harvest was celebrated this year with a sing song with Val Rowsell, followed by communion in the afternoon. Four residents also went to the Leigh harvest festival service and lunch in the village hall. Pots and containers have been planted with daffodils, crocuses and hyacinths ready for a grand display in spring. A trip to Wells was very successful, with lunch in the Bishop’s Palace and a tour of the cathedral. We were also entertained by Mark and his Spanish guitar, Florence with her wonderful harp recitals and folk stories and music from Folk South West.

“When Autumn Leaves Start too Fall" On Saturday 15 October in St.Andrew's Church we welcomed David Bednall, Emily Topham and Thomas Williams in a concert entitled "When Autumn Leaves Start too Fall" - Music from all ages. David, well known to many of us in Yetminster was the accompanist, Emily a mezzo-soprano and Thomas a bass delighted the many who attended with their excellent variety of songs and music. They have offered to return in the Spring - something to look forward to. £200 was raised to help with the upkeep of the Church, for which we are very grateful. Thank you Emily, Thomas and David. Yetminster & Ryme Intrinseca Parish Council Summary of Council Meeting 19 October 2011 The meeting was attended by eight councillors, CCllr Bevan, DCllr Lawrence, 14 members of the public and the Clerk Traveller Site Cllr Gould pointed out that the document from which the media had gained their information on this matter was still in draft form. It is due to be sent out for consultation in November, at which point the Council and indeed individual residents could have their say. He pointed out that any comments must be ‘Objective’ as any ‘Subjective’ ones are likely to be thrown out. The Post Office Cllr Gould said that the Post Office would remain closed for the time being whilst the Post Office authorities negotiated the lease with Mrs Merrit. He
has been assured that Yetminster will retain a Post Office for the foreseeable future. In the meanwhile he and other councillors will run a shuttle to Thornford PO at 10am each Thursday. Speed Cameras We still await authority from Dorset Police to start this. PlanningThere were no contentious planning issues. Development Grants All major developments are now required to provide grants to the local authority for use to the betterment of the community. As a result some £2000 and £10000 are available from the Boyles School and Cross Farm developments respectively. Street Lighting Following a petition from residents the street lighting in St sound’s Close and Stoneyacres will be replaced on a one for one basis. Mr Drewett has agreed to assist the residents of Shearstones in drawing up a similar petition. Problems within the Parish Residents who experience problems with footpaths or other highway matters are quite at liberty to go direct to the County Council. If such an approach is unsuccessful then the Parish Council can help out. DG Gould, Chairman
Helping Hands Preparations are in full swing to set up the new Helping Hands organisation. We have recruited 20 volunteers and have conducted our first health and safety training event. Sarah and Judi have held initial informal discussions with the volunteers and Criminal Bureau Checks(CRB) are underway. Funding is always going to be an issue and I am currently seeking donations from many businesses, organizations and a sponsored run, however, individual donations would be greatly received. I anticipate initial in year set up costs at about 500 pounds and would envisage us being self sustaining after the first year. This is an organisation where a little contribution by a volunteer can make a huge impact on someone’s life. This is the main motivation for all our volunteers who want to make a difference and give something back to the local community. CRB checks take a while to complete and we will therefore not be in a position to stand up as an organisation until early in the new year. Graham Plaice

Yetminster Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Following the village meeting on 25 October; a jubilee committee was set up with members David Gould(Chairman) Jane Trower, Pandy Brown, Jackie Parks, John Strover and Garth Hently. The Committee has since met and is proposing the following: A Permanent Memorial Two ideas were discussed and will be made public when we know whether either or both of them are feasible and at what cost. Village Celebrations The Committee are very keen that as many residents as possible have the opportunity to take part in at least some of the celebrations. Poppy Appeal 2011 The Royal British Legion celebrated its 90th anniversary this year. Their target, to surpass last year’s record collection of £36 million, is 40 million pounds. The proceeds will go towards funding their new rehabilitation centres and continued support of those in their care. I am delighted to report that the Poppy Appeal in in our area of Leigh, Batcombe and Hilfield raised £784. This is such a worthy charity and I am overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity. The Legion will be very grateful. General Sir Robert Fry’s lecture on the 1st World War was outstanding. He eloquently set out the historical and political background to the war, its ill starred Generals and Commanders, and examined the myths and horrific statistical numbers. Quite a tour de force. The evening raised £436 and with the house to house collection we made £1220. A big thank you to all the Poppy Collectors. Julian Turnbull

Richard is shortly leaving the village and his place as Poppy Coordinator has been taken by Colonel Dick Clarke. I am very grateful to Dick for taking on this important role. Also, a big thank you to Major Hubert Baillie who used to be the Poppy Coordinator for the area, and despite a Royal Legion Poppy Collection for move to Netherton, continued to collect in Yetminster, Chetnole and Ryme Ryme. A big thank you goes out from St Andrew’s Primary School PTA and the Wriggle Valley Pre School for the wonderful and successful Race Night arranged by MaryAnn Parkinson & her posse, a great night was had by all. The event was sponsored by Maxi Cars, Chetnole with the eight races sponsored by:- Express Motor Parts, M, Cahill Services, J. P Fabrications, Maxi Cars, Toby & Jess Crocker, ARH Event Caterers, A Hiller, Building & Property Maintenance and M Harris Building Contractor. Charlie Reed & Steve Broadway did a fantastic job in hosting the races & keeping the race goers in control, while Liz Dowding and Sharon Murphy kept the tote running with their expertise. Community Christmas Fair Friday 25 November Santa arrived early at St Andrew’s School this year, and the queue was as long as always with excited child form the main school, pre-school and siblings . There was once again a wonderful, happy and cheerful; atmosphere as the parents, grandparents and members of the community enjoy themselves looking, buying, drinking and eating. Mrs Locke should be proud of the wonder performance from the choir and thank you to those who joined in showing their Christmas spirit. The stores from the school, Scouts and outside stall holders plus those parents who’s creative spirit kicked in, where busy and the Arts and Crafts made by the children under the close eye of Bella Neate Cleg where a great success. The PTA Committee would like to thank the support of Paul Miller, staff and pupils of St Andrew’s Primary school as well as the parents, grandparents, siblings and the surrounding villages for the support that they have given in helping this ‘Community Christmas Fair be such a success. The stallholders were very enthusiastic and sold a variety of goodies – soap, ceramics, stained glass and handicrafts etc. – there were also some fascinating Retro and Vintage stands – it took us back a year or two!! The Stour Lacemakers put on a wonderful exhibition of their skills. We had huge support from members of the village, for which we owe a big thank you. A Success for the Community When Boyle’s Educational Foundation applied for planning permission for the space on its land at Boyle’s School in Yetminster, it had to make a contribution to WDDC for open space and leisure facilities in the area. Boyle’s was careful to make sure the contribution would be spent in Yetminster. When Boyle’s heard of the appeal to refurbish the swimming pool at St Andrews School, they made sure everyone knew about this money. The Yetminster Pool Committee and Yetminster Parish Council duly applied for it and on 9 November word came through that WDDC will make the money available to help refurbish the pool. Thanks are due to all at St Andrews Primary School, in the Yetminster Pool Committee, in Yetminster Parish Council and at WDDC who made this happen. Bob Owen

addition, we must also thank the Yetminster Fair Committee for contributing a very generous £500 to our cause. So we are well on our way to raising the funds to complete the reburishment on our poor old swimming pool. A view from the other side of the reins We all live in this part of rural England by choice, enjoying the countryside around us, and all the benefits it holds. In order to get out and about and to sustain living in rural England our cars are vital, and on a personal note, with work I easily rack up thirty thousand miles a year, we all need our cars. When not working a fair number of us wish to unwind and enjoy the countryside from horse-back, whether this enjoyment is via: pony clubbing, pleasure riding, long distance riding, show jumping, dressage, point to pointing, eventing or hunting, there is one common denominator; we have to ride on roads. Our roads and lanes are sometimes narrow, bending and often muddy, but there is generally plenty of room for all to go about our travels, in whatever format, and doing so respectively to each others mode. Many more riders now where high-visibility clothing, which helps a great deal, especially with these gloomy winter days. What I would like to ask is that car drivers

do consider and think twice about the unnecessary sounding of the horn around bends. However well mannered and experienced a horse and rider are, it is very un-nerving to be entering a bend with an on coming, out-of-sight, vehicle blasting its horn. Over the years I have confronted several drivers after such a sounding, and opened with the simple question : Why do you do it? I have had a lot of drivers say that a horse should not be on the road if it is going to be startled – so if I sneaked up behind you and popped a balloon would you be startled! What does happen is that any driver unexpectedly sounding their horn could, can and will startle the best of horses, it could shy, slip and tip the rider on to the road, or bolt up a lane. The vehicle could then hit the rider or the horse / pony, could be an adult or child injured or dead in the road, how would the driver feel? Please, slow down don’t hoot, as it is a case of when someone gets hurt on our lanes, not if. Thank you, J Meier and Lottie, Jasper and Puzzle - our horses !

“IS YOUR EMERGENCY BOX IN PLACE THIS WINTER?” Flood Warden and Environment and Conservation Officer, Judy Nash asks YOUR EMERGENCY BOX could ensure that you have a trouble free winter. What might you consider putting into your box, or in our case Emergency Cupboard? First of all get to know your house in the dark – an approximate knowledge of distances to stairs could be invaluable. You might like to consider putting up battery powered LED push lights at intervals – and then check the batteries every three months! A push light on the inside of the emergency cupboard door can illuminate those vital torches, candles and supplies. A plug in rechargeable LED emergency light that comes on automatically when we have a power cut is also useful. You might like to invest in head torches –useful when checking stock in a field after dark and also for lighting your way indoors, leaving both hands free to carry a hot drink and food safely! Useful to have in the emergency cupboard:- candles, night lights and safe holders to place them in, -wind up torches and/or a wind up lantern –don’t forget boxes of matches and spare packs of batteries!
- a small first aid kit - burn treatment cream - scissors and string - notebook, pens and pencils - a list of all emergency numbers, family contact numbers on a card close to the phone, written in bold permanent pen, legible in dim light - a small camping stove, camp kettle and saucepan suitable to use over a direct flame - soup, bottled water and an assortment of easily heated meals to suit personal tastes. The list is endless. Outside: snow shovels – a rake to clear blocked drain gratings - a bag of grit and road salt all stored not too far from the house. Artsreach Performance, 20 Oct Chetnole Village Hall Visitors passing through Chetnole during the evening of 20 October may have wondered about the sounds of hilarity emanating from Chetnole Village Hall. Had they paused and entered they would have discovered that Chetnole’s Artsreach season had commenced with a performance by Matt Harvey – wonder poet. And what a performance! He had the audience in fits of continuous laughter with his poems about subjects as diverse as slugs, tea bags, streakers, potatoes, kippers and works perks. A real wordsmith. His shortest poem?

Autumnal & Festive frolics What a lovely autumn we have had; we have been using our outdoor spaces as much as we can. Year 6 had a wonderful afternoon launching rockets with the most successful using pneumatics ( a bicycle pump to you and me) although the chemical concoction vinegar and bicarbonate of soda was a close second. Over fifty of our year 4/5 children have just returned from a week’s adventure at Pneumatic rocket power Leeson House in Worth Matravers: walking in Arne and Studland, orienteering and Wales. She is very excited about joining investigating Durlston and Swanage. You our school and thanks to everyone who lucky lot! made her feel welcome on the interview We are having a few staff changes at day. We are also sad to see Anne Hassel the end of term. Jackie Pitcher, who is leave us; she has been a teaching assistant currently on maternity leave, has decided for over twenty years and greatly to step down from being Deputy Head due instrumental in improving our children’s to her burgeoning family, but returns as learning. News from our Churches More Than Gold The new Bishop of Salisbury, Nicholas Holtam has welcomed the planned arrival of the Olympic Torch in Wiltshire and Dorset. He said “This is fantastic news for those in our parishes who will see and participate in the Torch relay first hand. This is our chance to give the Olympic Flame and the rest of the world a warm welcome” With the sailing events taking place in Weymouth, just down the road, there are many ways to join in and help. In Weymouth and Portland there will be a lot going on, to which we are all invited to join in. During the Olympics (27 July – 12 August) some of the churches will be open with holiday clubs open to parents to drop their children off for an hour or so. ‘Messy church’, fun activities for all the family, cafes, art exhibitions, drama, evening fringe events, concerts and plays. Then at the August Bank Holiday(24 – 27), just before the Paralympics there will be a big stage on the beach with entertainment, speakers, Kid’s fun show, bands, face painting and Bouncy castles and Sunday worship. Here in the Wriggle Valley we will be holding our an Olympic ‘Faith Focus’ service on 10 June led by Melbourne Hockey Olympian John Strover and the ‘Churches Together’ Olympic Co-ordinator, Rev. Anni Douglas. She is urging the Churches to join in with the planning. “Help us make this a very special event: I hope this will pull communities together and make it memorable for years to come. There are a lot of organisations who can give creative ideas that will work in our area.

Thank God e come again towards Christmas and New Year with a variety of thoughts and concerns going through our minds. It’s a time of looking back to the months that have passed in 2011, as usual it has been a mixed year of blessings and challenges. For the Methodist Church the death of John Nile has left a large gap in our congregation and tributes were paid to him at both his thanksgiving service and in this magazine. Since the early summer we have worshipped on the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of each month rather than each week. Rev Choi announced in the summer that he will be moving in August 2012 to another Circuit. A vacancy will then exist whilst a new URC Minister is appointed to Sherborne and 3 of our smaller Circuit Churches. A new vision for growth in our rural churches is being helped by the appointment of a Deacon serving the area from next September for a period of 3 years. Christmas brings a great deal of joy to many people, sharing a happy time with family and friends but we remember those for whom it is also a difficult time. This year we know many more people will be unemployed, young people will not have found work, loved ones will be missed but the essential story of Christmas is a reminder of love. Jesus was born in a humble stable to a mother who knew she had been chosen to bear him but with a father who was very uncertain about the whole thing. We also bring to this story our questions and uncertainties – why did God choose to send his only Son into a

Club NewsChetnole Cricket Club The Wriggle Valley Players It is nearly that time of year again – OH YES IT IS The Wriggle Valley Players are performing a traditional panto – RED RIDING HOOD – in Leigh Village in mid January 2012. The story tells how Belinda Merry (Red Riding Hood) (played by Amy Goodfellow) and her grandmother, Malaria Merry (Tyrone Trower) win what's rightfully theirs. Along the way Belinda meets and falls in love with Prince Edwin of Entertainia, (Hannah Red Riding Hood panto cast rehearsing in earnest Andrews) who is in disguise as a poor woodcutter and on a quest to find himself a bride, (that’s convenient!) west dance championships in Exeter. Leigh & District Discussion Club The second meeting of our Winter programme commenced at 7.30pm 1 November 2011. Chairman Charlie Osmond welcomed everyone, apologies were noted from Alan Bastone who after having the winter flu jab was not feeling his usual self. However the famous brief case did arrive and fortunately Valerie Buckland was on hand to stand in for Alan in his absence. Our talk this evening was given by Mr. Chris Goodfellow on his experiences on farming in the Ukraine where because of extremes of temperature -35 to +35 they can virtually grow anything. Chris showed a BBC documentary film plus some great photos depicting the vast differences in culture, on the one side a farmer, one horse
and a plough and on the other, state of the art farm machinery. It was also interesting to note, that whereas here we have seagulls following the plough, over there it is cranes. A thoroughly entertaining talk which was enjoyed by all present - Charlie Osmond asked for our usual show of appreciation. Mr. Goodfellow declined his fee, a gesture very much appreciated. The ladies served the tea and biscuits - It was noted that fifty two members and friends will be attending the Xmas Dinner on the 18 November at the Folke Golf Club Adrian Samways will be kindly donating the bottle of Whiskey for the annual hands on heads/bums. Leigh Our October meeting was well attended and we welcomed one new member to our ranks – it is always good to see a new face and we would be pleased to see any more who are interested. We had a fascinating talk by Mr. Paul Morgan of the British Red Cross. He started by telling us that the BRC provides help and relief to people in crisis at home and abroad. They will loan wheelchairs etc. and help with transport in bad weather. They also have a fully equipped mobile home for immediate relief to people made homeless by fire. They also help with food supplies. Earthquake relief equipment is always on hand. There are ongoing problems in Haiti and some local people have been paid to work for the British Red Cross and self help and co-ordination with other societies such as Save The Children and the United Nations try to get folk to help themselves. Apparently a lesson was
learnt in Somalia where they had too many helpers and it created a big muddle. Now the BRC is helping to rebuild a school and help the local people to get the area working again. The BRC is not a ‘fire brigade’ organization but they provide ongoing help and support. We have a Christmas meal in December and then on 31 January Dr John Tuke will be talking to us on The Yellowstone National Park – do join us. Rosalie Volkes

Hundred of Yetminster History Society
On 12 October Jerry Bird talked to us, with slides, about standing stones and folklore in England. Who better than someone who has written, and still writes, about such things and moreover is prepared to dismiss folklore, of which he knows much, as largely myth. He has a wonderful collection of old postcards, largely from the Edwardian era and early 20th century and knows many stories to go with them. He spoke of connections with Druids(largely mythical), tourism, brides, kings, heroes ( such as King Arthur and Robin Hood), early gods, ghosts fairies, of rocking, healing and wishing stones, circles, tombs and Waylands smithy, of petrifaction, nutcrackers, caves and much else besides. We recognised some stones and were intrigued by others from further afield. We

were invited to look at his books and postcards and to buy the former or recent magazines and we generally had an interesting afternoon. We much enjoyed listening to Dr. Alan Chedzoy talking about William Barnes, the 19th century Dorset Dialect Poet, whose statue is close by the Dorset Museum in Dorchester. Alan Chedzoy knows a great deal about him and has wriiten a number of biographies of him, the last being published in 2010. Barnes was born at Bagber, near Sturminster Newton, into a poor family, and always remembered the fields were he and his cousin roamed He only went to a dame school but his handwriting was so neat that a local lawyer and later a lawyer in Dorchester chose to employ him. He was a man of great knowledge and artistic skills; at one tme he wanted to becime an engraver. It was in Dorchester that he first caugtht sight of his future wife, Julia MIles, as a girl, but her father refused them to marry. It was only after some years later whe he had become a school master in Mere that that aim was achieved. Julia was a good organiser and helped recruit boys for that sclool,
and then in Dorchester, and see that fees were paid. When she sadly died, in 1852 William Barnes aged considerably and could no longer cope with running a

school.. He took Holy Ordersand later a degree at Cambridge, he was guven a parish amd continued visiting his parishioners until his eighties. He also gave lectures, at Blandford for example .But he was rather untody and old fashioned and had no time for modern ideas. WriggleValley Women’s Group Our speaker at our October meeting was Sarah Bailey. Sarah is an ecclesiastical textiles and embroidery expert. She is from a family of fine art designers and weavers and trained at Glasgow Art School where she was greatly inspired during her time there. Colours are important and have a symbolic meaning. Purple meaning Royalty and Majesty and is also symbolic of Lent with red for Christmas. As an ecclesiastical embroiderer Sarah is commissioned to do restoration work of all sorts including elaborate gold work. She uses traditional materials of gold thread, beautiful silks and fabrics with skills from medieval times, although she did admit to using a machine on occasion. We marvelled at the intricate and minute detail of her work. How satisfying to know that your talent will be seen and admired for generations to come. We felt very privileged to be able to see such exquisite work close up. Please look out for our January speaker Mike Burks with a talk entitled AGOG in Dorset(Assorted Gems Oddities and Gardens), were we look at what Mike finds endearing about this glorious County. Tuesday Club Our November talk was entitled “Music in every home – how it all began” and was given by Mr Gordon Bartlett. This month our meeting was held at the Old Vicarage as the village hall was in use and on entering the room we were greeted with the sight of a marvellous display of boxes of all shapes and sizes, some of them beautifully decorated with marquetry. They dated from the late 18th century up till the early years of the last century and all of them played music. The earliest one was French but as you may imagine the Swiss and then the German manufacturers soon took the lead. They nearly all worked on clockwork and the music was played by the means of cylinders and metal discs. We were entertained with a lovely variety of tunes from Operetta to popular music of the times. At the start of the 20th century manufacture transferred mainly to America and the music players became much cheaper. We even heard one of the type played in pubs with a penny in the slot playing “Daisy, Daisy “. And one that sounded like an organ and is still used by the Amish people. The most recent tune we heard was of Sophie Tucker and as you may imagine we all joined in. Mr Bartlett’s collection ended at the point at which electricity was introduced since one of his main interests is buying old machines and getting them working again. If you read these reports, I think you will see what a
fascinating and varied programme we enjoy, so please come along and join us. Our December meeting on Tuesday 13 Dec is our Carol Service and Christmas tea – everybody welcome! Our Club’s Programme for 2012, as always, has been given much thought by the programme organisers. We would be delighted if more folk would join us on the second Tuesday of each month, at 2.30 pm in Leigh Village Hall. If you decide to become a member, the annual subscription is only £5. But, if you only wish to attend when a special subject appeals to you, then you would be very welcome as a visitor for £1. In the last year we have lost some very dedicated and loyal members so we hope to have some newcomers to our friendly Club. Please give this some thought. You would be assured of a warm welcome and an even warmer cup of tea! Our programme for the first part of 2012
