Welcome to another bumper issue covering the months of August and Out and About September. As you can see the Diary - August onwards Wriggle Valley has been humming with a myriad of events enjoyed by all in Regular Meeting & Activities spite of our errant weather. General News Thank you for all your news and views; we would like you to send in St Andrew’s Primary School your favourite recipes for the October News from our Churches issue – perhaps a tried and tested scrumptious Christmas Cake recipe or Benefice Church Services perhaps a truffle recipe for children to Leigh Weather Watch make – yummy. We would still like more photos of Planning Applications our beautiful Wriggle Valley; I love this ...gone gardening… month’s cover of Nunney Castle, the Weymouth Seaside Special from Bristol Spotlight on our Community to Weymouth chugging through Club News Melbury Bubb. What about something autumnal for October or snowy for later editions; there must be loads of the latter after last winter’s whiteout. Have a fantastic summer and enjoy our lovely county. COFFEE MORNING

So much happened in Batcombe in June with the famous Cream Teas, this time being hosted by the brothers at the Friary; the sun shone and we raised £600 for church funds at this beautiful venue. Many thanks to all who helped. The church was full for the baptism of Iris Maria Blake Sellick and her sister Robin Zinna Joan Sellick, a very joyous occasion. Congratulations to Andrew Alford and Sara Lindley on their forthcoming The next Batcombe monthly coffee morning will be at Marian Jeffries on marriage on Saturday 16 July; it is great to have young people settling in Wednesday 3 August and at Julie Gibbs on 7 September. the village. Some time ago the collection box More news of the Auction of was broken into and considerable Promises, which will be held in the damage was done. I am pleased to Autumn, in the next issue report that the damage was swiftly repaired by three kind gentlemen from Alan Bastone the village; our thanks to them for their kindness.

Whatever you decide to do in the village (and beyond) this summer, have a good one! Liz Tebbatt

Dog Fouling

Chetnole Book

Over the past few months there has been big piles of dogs mess around the verges of Deep Ford Lane/Yetminster Road and since there are small children often visiting the houses concerned a gentle reminder for dog owners to clear up after their pet might be a good idea. The same could be found at the other end of the village but I haven't been walking down there.

The Supplement to the Chetnole Book has now been distributed to all those whose names and addresses we have. As mentioned before, there were some hundred copies sold at the local shops. For these we do not have details. If the other 99 will kindly give us their names and addresses, we shall be able to complete the task. If any newcomers to Chetnole are interested in this, please likewise contact Shirley Madgwick us. Hallett 01935 872721 email paul@midwessexcricket.org 9

HERMITAGE.... Local representative: Ray Dickerson (01963) 210292

Family Fun Event This did exactly what it said on the tin – it was a really fun afternoon for all the family, the sun shone and a good time was had by all. The introduction of the three legged races, welly throwing, hoop-la and apple bobbing proved popular, as were the traditional Bouncy Castle, skittles and coconut shy. In addition St. Mary’s Church ran a fantastic tombola. The afternoon’s events concluded with a game of Rounders and a fiercely competitive Tug-of-War (see the photo below of potential 2028 Olympians!), then people relaxed in the sunshine to enjoy the delicious Cream Teas.

David Chutter has lived all his life in the village, whilst Oliver Woodroffe is a relative newcomer, having been here for only 20 years. Friends and family were delighted to join the celebrations and to wish the ‘boys’ a very happy birthday. Our photograph shows (l to r) Sally and Oliver and David and Joyce at the ceremonial cutting of the cake, which was made by Joyce and beautifully decorated by Nicole Stanford. Ray Dickerson

There are too many people to thank for making this event a success; suffice to say that it was a real team effort. 160 not out! Two of Hermitage’s octogenarians recently held a joint party to mark their significant birthday.

Thank You Many, many sincere thanks to all those wonderful and kind friends and neighbours who sent me cards, flowers, chocolates, home made cakes and the many lovely phone calls of good wishes following my stay in Southampton hospital for a major op. I am now recovering well and am so grateful for everyone’s kindness. Thank you. Cindy Durham

I do not like having to say this, but as this edition of the WVM is a ‘double’ one, the next edition (October) will be autumnal with a capital ‘A’. Let us hope we will be looking back on a great summer? To the moment in hand, there is much to look forward to in August and September, having enjoyed the Food Fair, the annual Leigh Hog Roast and an inaugural visit by the Bishop of Sherborne. But before we do, let us bathe in a certain amount of justifiable pride at the ‘Oliver Letwin’ article in a recent edition of the Western Gazette. 14

Have you seen the framed copy of it in the Hall? The Dorset ‘Hysterical’ Cycle Ride is mentioned elsewhere but the Leigh Flower Show on 13 August, the Three Day Leigh Art Exhibition (26-28 August) and Inter Village Sporting Events (dates various in September!) are all ‘MUSTS’! If I am honest I am as guilty as anybody of not ‘logging on’ to the Leigh Village website (wwwleighvillage.co.uk). Karen Our dragon boat who team manages the website Bugler (872147) is keen for clubs, societies etc. etc. to contact her with news and other items for publication. So please help her. David Reason

St Andrew’s Church Leigh There is to be our annual inside cleaning morning in the church on Saturday August 20 at 10am – if there is anyone who is not normally involved in cleaning our church and would like to help us, please do get in contact with me, we are always looking for more helpers. The annual Dorset Historic Churches Bike Ride/Walk takes place on Saturday 10 September – this is a great opportunity to not only support our local church (half the money raised comes back to St Andrew’s Leigh) but to have some exercise! Anyone interested, please contact David Reason. Date for your diary – the Harvest Festival Service will be on Sunday 16 October @ 11am followed by a hot lunch in Leigh Village Hall of cottage pie and apple pies/crumbles etc. Tickets will be sold nearer the time for £5. Do come and celebrate Harvest with us. Anne Reason 873726 Christian Aid Thank you to all those who helped to collect or donate towards Christian Aid week which took place in May. The total raised by Leigh was £448 and the grand total for the Benefice was £1905. Our donation total for Leigh was

well up on last year which considering the economic times is a great result. Bell Ringing Competition The West Dorset Branch of the Salisbury Guild of Bell Ringers held their striking competition at St Andrew’s Church, Leigh on Saturday 18th June and it was a great success. Of the seven teams which took part, Leigh under the watchful eye of Jan Keohane came fifth, which we all thought was very good as we do not have practices any more. On behalf of the Branch Committee I would like to thank the ladies of the PCC for organising and serving the teas and David Reason, the churchwarden, for the part he played in the event. Also thanks to Karen Taylor for allowing the judge to park in her driveway. Bell ringing is a great hobby and a valuable service to the Church. Many thanks. Dennis Fudge, Bell Tower Captain PS The PCC received a thank you letter from Delia Perry, Branch Secretary saying how much they had enjoyed ringing our bells, eating the tea and how they admired our beautiful hall set in its wildflower meadow. Anne Reason

News from the Old Vicarage Becky Johnson won Carer of the year at the Great British Care awards in London recently and Natalie Adams was runner up for the Care Home Manager award. Many congratulations to them both! Annie raised a staggering £1110 for Breast Cancer Research by taking part in the Moon Walk and would like to thank everyone for being so generous. Over 30 Brownies and Girl Guides joined us around a rather smoky campfire for a lovely evening’s entertainment of singing and sausage eating. The Brownies presented each resident with a fuchsia that they had grown themselves, what a lovely touch! Our blooming Great Tea Party for Marie Curie Cancer Care raised £105. The WI produced some very yummy cakes for this and we are very grateful of their support. We had great fun making Edith’s mock cream on our war time memory day, but the chocolate spread made from mashed potato was not so popular! We also made butter in a jar, with expert guidance from Bet and Edith. Our sweet shop tasting brought back some fond memories of the decisions to be made with a penny burning a hole in your pocket and our food from the hedgerows was greatly enhanced with expert advice from Pippa Toulson of Folk South West. Four students from the Gryphon School joined us for their business and enterprise day and we had great fun making chocolate Tiffin and cornflake cakes. Doris Forsey helped us create some beautiful flower arrangements and three residents enjoyed cream teas at the Friary. 18

Wildlife Conservation in Leigh – your chance to get involved In Leigh we are fortunate to have a few Sites of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI), one of which is Beer Mill Mead, on the Yetminster road. Each year it comes up for bid in the Candle Auction, probably the only such auction left in the country. When, as in most years the Conservation Group wins the auction, the site requires a few small work parties of effort in the winter to help preserve the variety of habitats. You may feel that you want to be involved in some way, perhaps just a little coppicing and path clearance in the winter The work programme was coordinated for many years by my father Stanley Waterfall and I assisted him in this. He had the vision to maintain this land in a species rich and environmentally sound manner for the enjoyment of local people. It

has a footpath alongside it and is a lovely peaceful spot, just off the road where you can watch tawny owl, or spotted flycatchers, study the wild flowers or just sit on the bench in the grass clearing amongst the oak trees. I became involved about 5 years ago as Dad’s health began to fail, but now with the death of both my parents and with me living in Sherborne I feel that I can no longer continue to give the effort to it that I used to. Therefore if there is a reader or a person known to you, who is interested in wildlife and conservation, and who feels that they can take on the coordination of activities associated with Beer Mill Mead, will they please contact me. Even if you don’t want to do the coordination work but would like to be involved, then please do contact me. Kevin Waterfall 07825 15251 Kevin.waterfall@btinternet.com.

Moonwalk Dear Friends, As you know I completed the Moonwalk in London last month. I was very impressed with the organisation of the walk and the amazing atmosphere that was created by approx. 15000 women and loads of men. There were many teams that had gone to considerable effort to dress in fantastic outfits ranging from the very pink to the incredibly elaborate with most of the men in rather ill fitting bras! I set off at mid night with the Pink group and did the circuit of Hyde Park then arriving at Buckingham Palace went up the Mall right up past Piccadilly the Strand and was looking forward to the loo stop at Tower bridge, chaos, the loos were not working and hundreds of us were by this time desperate! A slipway down to the Thames was my salvation and for many others when they noticed what I was doing. 22

We walked all along the Embankment seeing the Globe Theatre and several other well known landmarks of whose location I was unaware prior to this walk. I crossed Westminster Bridge with Big Ben striking 4.30 am by which time it was light again. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and would happily do it again. Many, many thanks to all of you for you generosity which means I have raised quite a sum (£1100 so far) for Breast Cancer Research. I would not have received an amount of this size without the help of my wonderful husband, who sent you all the email. We have both had friends and colleagues this year who have been through the trauma of cancer treatment and realised any one of us may be affected at any time so a very big thank you to all . MOVIOLA AT LEIGH VILLAGE HALL @ 7.30PM. DOORS OPEN 7PM BAR AVAILABLE AND CHOC ICES

MONDAY 12 SEPTEMBER

HANNA Reputed to be the best film of 2011. Director Joe Wright who made ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and ‘Atonement’. Cast includes Cate Blanchett, Tom Hollander and Olivia Williams. Hanna is a teenage girl who has the strength and stamina and the smarts of a soldier, having been raised by an ex CIA man in the wilds of Finland. Her upbringing has made her into the perfect assassin. As she reaches her ultimate target she faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity. Fast moving and genuinely gripping.

Monday 14 November

MAO’S LAST DANCER This is a terrific film by Australian director Bruce Beresford with a great story, but unlike ‘ The Black Swan’, without the gothic horrors. This is about a child prodigy dancer who defects to the USA at the height of the Cold War and becomes world famous. This is an outstanding film thought by many to be better than ‘The King’s Speech’. Certainly a film not to be missed. TICKETS £5 AVAILABLE FROM : Leigh Stores and Fiona Parks 01935-873603 Or email fionaparks@talktalk.net

Thank you to everybody who supported the Fair Quiz night, which raised approximately ÂŁ430. I am beginning to get a reputation for my outfits as quiz master; I have appeared as a fat gnome, joker and now headmaster with a moustache like Adolf Hitler. It was great fun and all for a worthy cause. I am very aware of how geographically

disparate the village is, so this is a plea for you all to direct all useful information to me regarding village news/events, my contact details are at the top of this introduction. Well done to Garth and his committee for all their efforts with the Fair.

Helping Hands

Help with correspondence Gardening Companionship Provide information on other agencies Dog Walking The committee is currently creating its business plan, vision and mission statements, arranging health and safety training for volunteers and setting up a procedure for conducting Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) checks. The scheme has a target date for commencing operation on the 1 December 2011. We currently have a small pool of volunteers(10) and are actively seeking others to take part. If this scheme interests you and you would like to volunteer or gain more information, please contact Graham Plaice on 01935 872044, 1 Cloverhay Yetminster or gplaice@gmail.com. I would be grateful if you could indicate your interest by Friday 30 Sept 2011 as this would assist in the planning phase. Graham Plaice

Helping Hands is an organisation being created in an attempt to provide specific support for local people. This initiative is attempting to assist people through shortterm crises such as illness or injury and would take direct feeds from the Yetminster Health Centre and target support using a network of volunteers to people in need. The organisation is currently embryonic and is using the Weymouth Community Angels as the template for development. The scheme is not intended to impinge upon the excellent work of other support networks such as the Women’s Institute or neighbourhood schemes who have an emphasis on neighbourly kindness. The organisation will be delivering a service to people in the Wriggle Valley area. Volunteers will provide specific help and support in the following areas: Shopping and running small errands Transport Accompanied Walks

Coffee beans The coffee bean banner can be seen flying, on the first Wednesday of each month, outside St Andrew’s Hall, Yetminster. It welcomes all to our fun coffee morning where we hope to live up to our motto: “Bring a friend Meet a friend Make a friend” We thank the Yetminster Fair Committee for their generosity for giving us the money and support, which enabled us to purchase such a bright and cheerful advertisement for our monthly event.

Thanks to our Sponsors Just to let everyone know that Rachel Bayfield completed the London Marathon in a very respectable time of 6 hrs 12 mins and in doing so raised over £2,700 for Cancer Research UK. We would like to thank all our sponsors for their valuable contributions in helping Rachel raise this impressive amount. Jim Bayfield - Landlord of the White Hart - has been accepted for the 2012 Marathon and will be raising money for The British Heart Foundation. The White Hart will be organising a number of fun fundraising events, so watch out for future announcements. We hope for your continued support Jim Bayfield 26

FILM NIGHTS Thursday 15 September The Eagle”12A – Historical Epic Based on Rosemary Sutcliffe’s classic novel The Eagle of the Ninth. The story is set in Britain in 140AD and a Roman’s Legionary’s search for his father and the lost standard of the Ninth Legion lost in the wilds of Scotland 20 years before. Directed by Kevin MacDonald (Touching the Void/Last King of Scotland) and starring Channing Tatum as the Legionary. The revelation is Jamie Bell as the British slave Esca. The relationship between the two men combines with high adventure and spectacular Highland scenery to make this splendid entertainment.

Thursday 20 October Mao’s Last Dancer 12A – Drama Australian director Bruce Beresford’s film about a child prodigy dancer who defects to the USA at the height of the Cold War. The dancing is superb and the political story around it makes for a most watchable film. Comments from first Moviola show, May 2011: “One man said it was the best film we had ever shown whilst a lady said it was the best film she had ever seen. One man thought it was better than The King’s Speech.”

Thursday 17 November Oranges and Sunshine 12A – Drama True story of the scandal of exporting orphaned British children to Australia which went on till the 1960s. Emily Watson stars as Nottingham Social Worker Margaret Humphrys who exposed the matter and tried to remedy its effects. Tickets will again be £5 to include a choc ice and will be on sale at Oak House Stores two weeks before each showing. Although tickets will be available on the door, it is most appreciated if they can be bought in advance so that seating can be sorted out reasonably accurately and enough wine and choc ices be brought to the Hall. Doors will open at 7pm (not before as Moviola need the time to set up) and films begin at 7.30pm.

Jolin Gallery Yetminster 10 - 31 August In perpertuum Photography the “Eclectic” a collection of photographs covering a variety of subjects by the new local photographer Laura Pearce LRPS. Exhibiting also during the above time will be two up and coming lady artists to the Art Scene from Sherborne.

14 - 30 September Glass Exhibition An exhibition of current work by Andy Denham and Luc Gerstein.

“Imagined Landscapes” An exhibition of paintings by Linda Carroll. Linda’s iconic imagery is combined in a decorative and rhythmic style, her more abstract works explore the world of man, myth and emotion. Jolin Gallery, Boyles Old School, Yetminster 01935 873044 Opening hours 10.30am to 5.30pm Mon to Fri 10.30am – 4.30pm Saturday

Yetminster Fair Weekend – Friday 8 - Sunday 10 July 2011 Firstly a big THANK YOU to everyone who supported the fair this year in one way or another - we could not have done it without you! The weekend started with the traditional Quiz Night under the watchful eye of “Professor Graham” who, complete with mortar board, gown and cane, ensured that there was fair play and that everyone enjoyed themselves. On the Saturday, the weather was very kind to us and we had over 100 stalls and displays along the High Street and in St Andrews Hall with all manner of goodies, food and drinks. As usual The White Hart was at the centre of things, and, the Dorset Cream Teas provided by the Yetminster Scout Group in their marquee in the grounds of the St Andrews Hall were a treat not to be missed. The Opening Procession along the High Street got things underway

28

and the Durnovaria Silver Band and the Wessex Highlanders Pipe Band were in good form. There was traditional dancing from the Yetminster Irish Dancers and "No Mean Feet" and Party Tyme Entertainments did stalwart service undertaking announcements and acting as compere throughout the afternoon. A highlight this year was the Dog Show and Display event which was very popular and well attended by both humans and animals! Yetminster’s loveable sons, the Yetties, had their usual stall and seemed to be enjoying their retirement

although Pete was seen playing his accordion with one of the bands! On Sunday, the traditional service of Blessing the Animals was held in the Church Hall and Reverend Simon was again relieved that the threatened visit by a Tarrantula and its owner did not happen. All in all a great weekend - we are already beginning to plan for next year’s Fair which we hope will include evening entertainment so watch this space! The fair Committee is looking for new members to help it plan for the future. If you have ideas, or would like to help please contact Garth Hentley -01935 873239 or email us at yetminsterfair@aol.com

Ride + Stride for Dorset Historic Churches Trust Once again Dorset did very well in last year's Ride + Stride in aid of Dorset Historic Churches Trust (and Yetminster was in the top ten in the County), which aims to make grants of ÂŁ100,000 each year for the repair of our lovely churches.

44

This year's sponsored event will be on Saturday 10 September ride or walk to as many churches as you can, have a great day out in our beautiful countryside, usually on a lovely day, and, what's more, split the sponsorship money between the Trust and your own church. Ride + Stride is our main fund-raiser so please make another big and thoroughly enjoyable effort. Watch the national press for

news of the day countrywide and collect your sponsorship form from your parish organiser any time from the beginning of August. In Leigh it's David Reason on 873726 and in Yetminster it's Patrick Moule on 872447. For the other villages ring Patrick and he will give you particulars of your parish organiser. Patrick Moule

THE WORLD’S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING!!

Swimming Pool

PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT CANCER MACMILLAN ON FRIDAY 23 SEPTEMBER AT THE OLD HOUSE, QUEEN STREET YETMINSTER 10.30 – 12.00 The World's Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan Cancer Support's biggest fundraising event.

St Andrew's School would like to introduce you to its new Swimming Pool Committee. Our swimming pool at St Andrew's Primary School in Yetminster is in desperate need of repair if it is to continue to be a valued resource for the school. With the Olympics on the way, what better time to find enthusiasm and support to raise the £10,000 that is needed to install heating and renovate the pool. As part of the initiative, we are keen to make the pool available to the community during out of school hours, for example some evenings during term time and timetabled slots during the holidays. If you are a local group, family or an individual and think you would make use of this facility we would love to hear from you. Work is due to start early next spring ready for summer term 2012. We will keep the community informed of our progress. Of course if you have a local business or know someone who could help us with our fundraising we’d love to hear from you too. Yetminster Fair Day Dog Show. Jess Crocker and Becki Cooke held a Dog Show at this year's 'Yetminster Fair to raise funds for St Andrew’s (Wriggle Valley) Preschool to enable them to replace their playground. We had no idea how this event would be received, but we should not have worried, as come 1.30pm, the field behind the White Hart was full of people and their canine friends in all shapes and sizes. It was a wonderful sight. We had 6 classes: Prettiest Bitch - won by Lucy Iredale with her “Cockerpoo”, Honey Lucy & Cockerpoo, Honey Handsome Dog - won by Jess Anderson with her “Jack Russell”, Leo All the winners from the classes were Scruffiest Dog - won by Grace Buckland then entered into the “Championship” Class with her “Patterdale”, Ollie Waggiest Tail- won by Lesley Anne with in the Main Arena outside the White Hart for the “Dog the Judges would most like to her “Border Terrier”, Teazle Child Handler aged 11-16 - won by Ellie take home”. Our Judges Paul Miller and Brinsford with her 3 legged “Whippet”, Karen Martin had one final & enormous job Brin Child Handler aged 10 & under - left to do, how to choose from these 6 won by Jake with his “Jack Russell”, dogs..... After much deliberation, they declared Digger. All entrants were all given a “doggy” Lucy Iredale and Honey the winners with treat, very kindly donated by Foxlair Feeds, reserve place going to S Anderson and Leo, with the top three of each class being given for which they received £10 & £5 vouchers rosettes, which were generously donated respectively donated by Foxlair Feeds and “championship” rosettes donated by by Wellpets. Wellpets. With 100 entrants in the 1st Yetminster Fair Dog Show, we raised £100. We would like to thank the Yetminster Fair Association for their support, Wellpets and Foxlair, without whose sponsorship in providing the Rosettes and Treats/Prizes, we would not have been able to pursue this idea. Thanks also to our tireless Judges Mr Paul Miller and Karen Martin. We hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did. Becki Cooke and Jess Crocker Jess with Jack Russell, Leo

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD –

SHOE BOX CHRISTMAS APPEAL NOVEMBER 2011 IT IS EARLY, BUT THIS IS A WORTHY CAUSE . WE ARE ASKING THAT SHOE BOXES ARE FILLED WITH APPROPRIATE GIFTS FOR NEEDY CHILDREN. LAST YEAR YOU GAVE OVER 60 BOXES LEAFLETS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THE PORCH OF YOUR CHURCH OR AT LEIGH & YETMINSTER VILLAGE STORES FROM SEPTEMBER ONWARDS AND A FURTHER ADVERT WILL APPEAR LATER IN THE YEAR SHOULD YOU WISH TO GET STARTED PLEASE SEE THE ARTICLE BELOW WHERE SUITABLE GIFTS ARE LISTED TELEPHONE FIONA OR CAROL FOR MORE INFORMATION 01935-873603/872329

Operation Christmas Child The power of a simple gift There is an awful lot of bad news these days. The good news is that as a result of the generosity of the congregations of all the churches in the Benefice last year, hundreds of needy children received a Christmas gift and enjoyed a brighter Christmas. Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, ships gift-filled shoe boxes all over Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and as far away as Africa. Each box will go into the hands of an orphan or child whose family lives in abject poverty, most to a child who has never before received a personal gift. The project will be promoted in all the Churches but now is the right time to join this year’s campaign. PLEASE MAKE A NEEDY CHILD’S CHRISTMAS by filling a shoe box of your own. Leaflets will be available in all the Churches and village stores or you can also visit the website www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk to find out how to fill a box, labels for your box and ways to donate the £2.50 requested to pay for transportation. These packages are ‘love in a box’ each one makes a tremendous difference to

48

Some ideas for items to include in your box:

TOYS – cuddly toy, small age appropriate toys, eg. yo-yo, toy car or doll, tennis ball EDUCATIONAL SUPPLIES – felt pens, colouring pencils, notepads or colouring books, pocket calculators and geometry sets for older children HYGIENE ITEMS – hairbrush, comb, toothpaste & toothbrush, soap & flannel, hair clips OTHER ITEMS – Sweets (NOT chocolate), hat, cap, gloves or scarf, simple jewellery If you include a Christmas card, postcard or photo of you and your family it makes your gift personal and they will know that you care for them

a needy child. Every box shows a child that they’ve not been forgotten and that someone cares. They are totally overjoyed and just want to say a big ‘thank-you’ to whoever has given it. Filling a shoe-box and bringing it into Church is a simple and practical way of sharing God’s love, and showing children living in very difficult situations that someone cares. Encourage friends and family to also get involved. Putting together a gift-filled shoe box is really fun. Please also pray for the child who will receive your box, your gift will encourage a child in ways you could never imagine Fiona & John Parks

Vietnam to Cambodia for the British Heart Foundation In early November, Yetminster resident Simon Cridland will be taking part in a 300 mile cycle ride in support of the British Heart Foundation. He needs to raise at least £3,250 to take part, of which £1,600 will cover a proportion of the travel and accommodation costs. On this challenging long distance bike ride, the cyclists will cover between 50 and 70 miles a day for five days. As November approaches, you will increasingly see Simon out and about along the local lanes in a desperate attempt to get into shape! The fundraising is equally challenging and

you may already have seen Simon and his wife, Valerie, at various fundraising events such as the St Andrew's School Summer Fair and the Yetminster Fair, either selling or raffling items kindly donated by local residents and businesses. They have also held three car boot sales and a cake sale at Dorchester Hospital. To see more details of these events, or to sponsor Simon, you can visit his fundraising page at http://original.justgiving.c om/simoncridland. Alternatively, he does have a supply of old fashioned sponsorship forms for those

who have not yet taken the plunge into the internet age, or who just prefer the traditional method. Simon can be contacted on 873038. Simon Cridland

Yetminster Methodist Church

O

ne of the areas I still find difficult in living in England is ‘Holiday’. I do have holidays, and take a time of rest, away from home and work. But, I am not used to planning it in advance, some months before, or even some years before. I remember, when I started the Circuit ministry seven years ago, the first thing I was asked to do was submitting a holiday plan for the coming year. It was almost impossible to me, because I had never done it before in my life. It could be a personal matter, but on the other hand, it is a cultural matter, in which we, Koreans, usually do not make a holiday plan that far in advance. (You may know that Koreans are hard working people, although nowadays people spend more time and money on their leisure and holidays.) As Christians, you may want to know how Jesus would spend his ‘holiday’ (This may not be a right word. ‘Resting time’ may be more appropriate). But, it seems

not easy to get this idea from the gospel, apart from the story of meeting Samaritan woman at the well. Here, we see, Jesus came to the well to get some rest, having some food and drinking water. But, we know how the story goes, that he got involved in a talk with a woman, and eventually made her believe in God and Jesus himself. Actually, she was the first convert from Gentiles. Jesus never stopped working for God, whether he was at work, or on “holiday”. Later in this story (John 4:34), we see him saying, ‘my food (spiritual nourishment or rest) is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work’. What do you do on your holiday? I hope you do enjoy your holiday and do the will of God, wherever you go. With every blessing, Rev’d Sooncheol Choi P.S: During summer, there will be two services in a month at Yetminster Methodist Church. Details are on the next page.

Calling All Generations Calling all Families! This years Hilfield Family Weekend will be 2- 4 September. The weekend costs £30 per family and application forms are available from the Benefice Office. …gone gardening… The Green Oasis Ornamental grasses can be so pleasing to the eye. Grasses really do whisper just like the song said. On a dry summer day when the breeze blows through them the effect is tantalising, almost dreamlike. They are the type of hardy plant that you can grow anywhere, so if you have a very large garden and want to reduce the amount of work then a grass garden which is left to grow and cut once a year, might be a good solution. Grasses and reeds look stunning in the natural landscape and blend sympathetically with real materials like stone and timber. You can create mini-mazes for the children by cutting pathways through it and clearing small areas where they can hide. Grasses attract crickets and other insects. They do not require heavy maintenance but each year they need to be trimmed down in the spring so that new growth can begin. Birds and wildlife love them because they are a great place to hide and a fabulous material for nest making. I visited a friend’s garden in Portland in the spring and some of her grasses were being pinched by the seagulls. It was lovely to watch them from the convenience of a warm windowsill within the house. Grasses need to be planted en masse to look good. A large group will look much better than one or two randomly placed in the border. In a cultivated situation near the house along a border, larger grasses would be towards the back: things like Pampas or Miscanthus, Pennisetum Hamlyn and Calamagrostis Karl Foerster. Within the border you might use deschamphias or blue oat grass and at the front you might use the

dwarf Pennisetums, Stipa tenuissima or Festuca glauca. The colours are subdued and restful and the seed heads are soft and feathery. They almost create a cloud suspended above the plants. But running through the arrangement you can create excitement with colour by introducing herbaceous plants in groups of threes or fives. You might choose the very beautiful papery seed heads and sky blue flowers of Catanache caerula. Long lasting colour and flower spikes from Salvia May Night and Rose Queen. Knautia macedonia is a crimson scabious like flower that extends all through the season into late autumn. They seed everywhere and can be troublesome but the flower makes up for that! Gaura Whirling Butterflies flower themselves silly, blustering billows of white or pink blooms. Monarda Mahogany, Verbena bonariensis, Hemerocallis Frans Hals , all are outstanding varieties which you could introduce to add the colours you need to weave your tapestry of ornamental grasses and herbaceous planting. Happy Gardening! Sue Dodge The Company of Landscapers

SPOTLIGHT on our community Voices from the Old Vicarage - Dennis and Grace Fudge I spent a very pleasurable hour with this lovely, and loving, couple about their lives. Dennis was born in 1923, his father was a farmer and his mother a seamstress. He moved to Leigh in 1928, which was a year after the old village hall was built. His schooling was in Leigh and, later, in Sherborne and he cycled to his senior school whatever the weather. However, Dennis told me “more learning was not for me” and he left school at 14 and immediately began working in the family bakery at Stalbridge. He started learning his trade by doing “all sorts of everything”. I asked how they had met and was told that Dennis’ sister and Grace boarded at the same school and Grace was often invited to the family home. Amid many smiles Dennis asked Grace if she remembered how they held hands under the tea table! Grace told me she was about 13 or 14 at that time. Dennis also recalled how he mended Grace’s first bicycle puncture. They have now been wed for 63 years. Grace is now 85 years old told me her mother used to be a chambermaid. Her parents lived in Yeovil, but her mother “loathed” it there so her father moved them

to Leigh. Grace told me a very moving story of the times her father was very ill. She said her mother would hang out a white sheet from a window and Grace would know to go and help attend to him. Grace worked for LloydsDown, Bank Batcombe one ofDorchester our favourin and during the War was a fire watcher. She said that if the tellers were a penny out on their calculations at the end of the working day, they had to stay behind until it was found and the books tallied. Dennis said he had been a sub-mariner during the War working in the galley to supply bread to 50 crew members. Extraordinarily, he was in the last submarine to be depth-charged by the Japanese Navy. The vessel sank to the bottom of the sea but the crew managed to raise her and survived. Dennis and Grace have a large family of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and “1½” great great grandchildren (1 on the way). They told me that their recipe for a successful marriage was “we worked together, we played together and hardly ever had a row.” Grace said she could not have wished for anything better. Club NewsChetnole Cricket Club Tuesday Club News For our meeting on the 12 July we were happily able to see Pauline Harley, looking very fit, back in the chair though sorry to hear that one of our long term members, Marjorie Manning, had gone to live at the Old Vicarage. We are sure she will be happy under their excellent care. Our speaker this month, Iris Chapple, brought two friends with her who were made very welcome, Treacle and Rosie. Iris is a puppy walker for Guide Dogs for the Blind and Rosie is her 17th puppy whereas Treacle was trained several years ago. On his final medical check before being assigned to a blind person it was found that Treacle himself had a condition that could result in blindness so Iris decided to keep him as a pet herself. The term “puppy walking” gives very little idea of the extensive training that Guide dogs have to undergo. First they have to be trained to use only their own garden for calls of nature as a pooper scooper could not be used by a blind person. They have to become used to using all sorts of transport and get used to all sorts of different noises. They also have to be taught to ignore distractions such as other dogs, cats, farm animals and children and they have to learn good manners for example never jumping up at people or on furniture. They have a year to do all this before their training is completed with their carefully chosen blind owner. Iris told us how the hard work was all worthwhile when a blind person let you know what a change having a guide dog made to their lives - for example going shopping on their own for the first time. 68

We all learnt a lot about this very worthwhile service and much enjoyed the company of our visitors. September’s talk is entitled from “the Scalpel to the Sword” and we welcome all who would like to find out more. Sylvia Bryan

Garden Party They say the sun shines on the righteous and it seemed so to be on 14 June when we met at Sylvia and Philip Bryan’s lovely garden for a tea party. We managed to sit out in the garden itself in small groups enjoying each others company and lively conversation. It was great for me to be there after my prolonged absence and I was warmly welcomed back. Depending on hospital appointments etc, I hope, from now on, to be able to attend the monthly Tuesday meetings. We had a marvellous cream tea and thanks are due to Heather and Sylvia for making all the delicious scones. Pauline Hartley Chairwoman Tuesday Club

Coffee Morning On Saturday 25 June a coffee morning was held at Heather and Dorothy Baldock’s home at Leigh Cross Cottage. As we did not have our usual annual jumble sale this year owing to various circumstances, we decided on an open coffee morning with a cake stall, a nearly new goods stall and a raffle. Again the weather was kind and we had our refreshments outside accompanied by chatty groups and birdsong. A goodly number attended and

we raised the sum of approximately £218. Thanks are due to all who attended, nice to see some local folk, as well as our own members, and to all who provided goods and raffle prizes, also to Heather, Dorothy and Hebe for their hospitality.

Annual Outing The forecast was for rain, but it held off for most of the day and members of the Tuesday Club enjoyed a fabulous trip to Weymouth on Wednesday 6 July. Once again Barbara had pulled out the stops and made all the superb travel arrangements. We arrived in glorious sunshine with a slight sea breeze and wandered around the town or just sat watching beach activities and, of course, the lovely sand castle model for which Weymouth is so famous. This year’s theme was “The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party”. We reminisced while watching one of the last Punch and Judy shows still in existence and the children shouted and screamed in all the right places, just as we had done all those years ago! A very brief shower of rain did nothing to dampen our spirits and we all met up once again to drive to the Abbotsbury sub tropical gardens for a good look around and tea. The gardens are aptly named – after an hour there the skies opened and torrential rain poured down! However, it didn’t put the members off and we finished walking around before meeting up again for the trip home. A thoroughly enjoyed day spent amongst good friends with, mainly, excellent weather. SUMMER SHOW Saturday 20 August Crafts Painting and Drawing Photography

Competitions St Andrew’s Hall

Yetminster & Ryme Garden, Art and Craft Society Members met on 12 July at “The Old Vicarage” in Yetminster for a very pleasant hour drinking Pimms and admiring the way Anthony and Pandy Brown are transforming their garden. Afterwards we had an indoor picnic in the church hall across the road followed by a gardening quiz. Some of the questions were baffling for many of us but it was good fun and an enjoyable time was had by all. Next month is the Summer Show on Saturday 20 August when there will not only be the usual classes for fruit, vegetables, flowers, floral art, cookery, jams and preserves, but also classes for crafts, painting and drawing, and photography. Schedules and entry forms are available at Oak House Stores and the Jolin Gallery. We look forward to a bumper crop of entries this year and to a record attendance on the day. John Greenwood 69

The Wednesday Club As another school year comes to a close I would like publicly to thank the Headmaster, Paul Miller, and all his staff for their support to us. We had a good Open Afternoon at the end of June when we said goodbye to five of our boys who are leaving for secondary school. They were Callum Henry, Andrew Frost, James Cridland, Alex Carter and Lewis Perry and we were very sad to see them leave. The Rev Diane Tregale, the Chaplain at The Gryphon School, spoke to us and it was lovely to see many parents and friends there that afternoon. For those of you unaware of who we are, we are interdenominational and meet on a Wednesday afternoon from 3.10pm – 4pm to learn about the Bible and have fun! If you feel you would like to help in any way, do please contact me, as we are always looking for more teachers and helpers. We ended the term with a thank you party for the children, much deserved as we were very proud of them all at our Open Afternoon. Anne Reason (01935 873726)

The Wriggle Valley Women’s Group

On 28 June a small group were given a guided walk around Milborne Port by Richard Duckworth. Most of us felt that we had driven through the village many times but knew very little. We saw what had been the market, walked through to the church which is shared by the Anglicans and the Catholics, heard that at one time there had been as many as five working mills. We ended the tour by being allowed into the Guildhall, climbing the narrow stairs to a room filled by a huge table which had been built in situ. A fascinating evening. And now to the beginning of our new programme for 2011/12. We begin by meeting at Gable Court, Yetminster at 7.30pm on Tuesday 20 September when Leigh WI In June Mrs. Jennie Rake our speaker is David Peet talking about gave us a talk on Fair Trade some amusing and interesting situations crafts in various countries an Official Receiver can find himself in, in and how she had visited “Feeding lions and other animals-work and some of the countries who life of an Official Receiver” New Programmes will be in local shops make these crafts including Thailand, where she had seen ladies sewing shirts and notice boards from mid September. Chetnole Chuckers Boules Club The Chetnole Chuckers challenged a combined team from the Sherborne and Sturminster Newton Pétanque Clubs to a friendly match at home on the morning of 28 June. It was good to meet up with the away team players again - most were already known to the Chuckers from playing in the Dorset League last season. The weather stayed dry and mild and a good-natured contest was

enjoyed by all. There was an excellent turnout from the home players and a dozen Chuckers participated. Six games of triples were played, ending in a final score of 5-1 to the home team. (We expect a return match later in the season on the newly-resurfaced piste at the Sherborne Hotel.) Following the match, the teams adjourned to the Chetnole Inn for midday refreshments - a most pleasant end to the morning’s games. Ian Wood

Red Riding Hood He’s behind you…. no he isn’t, well not until the last weekend in January 2012 - put the dates into your diary.. About 25 local folk turned up for the reading and auditions of Red Riding Hood, directed by Kirsty Andrews, and we had a couple of entertaining evening putting on silly voices and strutting about to get ourselves into character. We are now waiting with baited, or even wolfie breath, to know whether we have been cast as the beautiful wood land fairy, soppy Prince Edwin, sickly sweet Bo Peep, the original Red Riding Hood’s

granddaughter, thick henchman, the dastardly baddie Sir Jasper de Vyle or the very evil, Lupus Rex. What a choice. We still need more chorus/ villagers/fairies and help behind the scenes on the production side so come along at the start of rehearsals at 7.30pm on Wednesday 7 September at Leigh Village. Look forward to seeing you then and you can release the inner wolf! Bella Neate-Clegg
