Diary - August onwards

34

What a damp month although there Regular Meeting & Activities seem to be still great enthusiasm for all the General News events held in July, read all about the Yestminster Fair (p 26). …there's nowt so… I loved the story of the wedding held in St Peter’s Church on the wettest day for St Andrew’s Primary School the last decade (p 10) - I am so glad that News from our Churches all went well in the end. All I can say is if the heron hadn’t already eaten our gold Church Services - August fish, then they would be well on their way in the River Wriggle by now. Church Services - September We are glad you all enjoyed the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Souvenir Leigh Weather Watch Edition, it was lovely to get so many Planning Applications glowing compliments especially about all the super celebratory photos you sent in. …gone gardening.. Now we are all girding ourselves up for the Olympics which, as our County is Club News hosting the sailing, we should be very proud. Could we have your news and views by the 12 September? Have a great summer and we look forward to hearing from you all in the Autumn. Bella Neate-Clegg

he new school term has got off to a rocky start for some of our Chetnole sixth formers attending The Gryphon School in Sherborne. Sadly, and not without some degree of frustratio

News from the Villages BATCOMBE.....

Brrrrrr, so much for Flaming June, the wettest and coldest since records began, lets hope we have a Indian summer to make up for it! Batcombe’s Harvest Festival will be held on 30 September at 11am followed by a bring and share lunch. Look out for posters around the village. There will be a wine and cheese evening party at Church Farm House on Monday 24 September, again, look out for posters around the village.

The sun shone and people enjoyed the Batcombe Cream Teas hosted by the Brothers at the Friary, a real sell out and £900 was raised for church funds. Our grateful thanks to all the people who helped make it such success. The Batcombe village coffee morning held on the first Wednesday of the month will be: August at Marion Jeffries and September at Julie Gibbs at Church Farm. Both start at 11am so why not pop along for a coffee and a chat Alan Bastone

CHETNOLE..... with Melbury Bubb & Stockwood

We welcome two new families to the village this summer. Jude and Phil Dyson-Coope and their son Harry (11) have moved into Kingswood; the family have moved back to the UK after six years in the States but previously lived in Yetminster so are very familiar with the area. We also welcome Richard and Mary Anne Charrington to Charing Cross Cottage; they have lived in Dorset amongst other places during Richard's military career and are very happy to be back in the county. The couple were keen to be moved in by the Flower Show and have made it despite the floods holding up proceedings! We hope our new residents will be very contented here in Chetnole and at the same time we send our

Chetnole Flower Show and Fete Saturday 4 August 2:00 to 4:30 best wishes to Douglas Rice and wish him well in his new home. We also congratulate local couple Simon and Sarah Warr from School Lane who were married at St Peter’s Church on 7 July. Theirs was no ordinary wedding day - read Simon’s brilliant account of his big day and find out why! Whilst I write I am praying that the rain will go away and give us all a break; the floods of July have been frightening and destructive - at one point the water levels reached the 6ft depth wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 5

wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk

Here’s hoping the Flower Show on the marker on Deep Ford Lane (see photos on p11) and there are unconfirmed reports 4 August will be unaffected - fingers crossed that this was the highest level since 1967. everybody and see you in October. Either way, I have never experienced Liz Tebbatt anything like it in the twenty years I have lived in the village.

"They Think it's All Over... it is now!" The final stage in the village fingerpost refurbishment project was completed at the end of June. Ned Kozowyk and Nils Wikstrom did a "makeover" on the Hell's Corner fingerposts, setting a very high standard, as befits The Alien Division of Chetnole Old Geezers [as they prefer to be known]. Many thanks to all the chaps who took part in the project, also to their long suffering wives for their patience. Gordon Ratcliffe

Many thanks from all of us at Hell Corner, we love our new signpost.

The Dorset Historic Churches Trust Sponsored Annual Ride and Stride The Dorset Historic Churches Trust Sponsored Annual Ride and Stride is on Saturday 8 September. Anyone can take part (sponsorship forms available from me, David Gough) and mode of transport can range from bicycle, walking, horse riding or wheelchair. All monies raised in the village are split 50 - 50 between the Trust and St Peter's Church, Chetnole I will be approaching the usual band of lovely ladies to man the church porch and who have undertaken this task for many years on the day, between the hours of 10am and 6pm Posters advertising the event will be displayed nearer the day. David Gough, Tamarisk, Chetnole, (872670)

The Ladies on the Wall (plus Gordon) Jan Witt sends in this delightful picture of the ladies (and Gordon) sitting on the church wall of St Peter's, Chetnole poised to watch her daughter Sarah's wedding in May this year. It is becoming something of a tradition that the ladies (and the odd bloke!) gather together just before the action commences and take in every detail of the 6 6

latest village wedding. See how many faces you can spot. Liz Tebbatt

The Chetnole Jazz Cafe The Chetnole Jazz Café will return to the Village Hall this Autumn. We start with Emily Saunders on 27 October. We are very proud to have been chosen as one of her venues to promote her new CD. On 1 December we host Mike Denham from the Sunset Café Stompers and Steve Graham, playing Boogie Woogie Rag Time Jazz. The format will be as before, with drinks and nibbles available, but numbers will be strictly limited to 66 so, if you want to be part of this social scene you will need to book early. Artsreach events will also feature again and don’t forget the Chetnole Village Poetry and Prose Evening – all local entertainment and free entry. Contact myself on 873233 or John Head 873555 for more information. Nigel Bray

Notes from Chetnole Parish Council A Parish Council Meeting was held on 12 July. A few parishioners braved the poor weather to hear our deliberations. The following topics were covered ●Further to the repair of signs in Chetnole, we were reminded that two of our volunteers, Ned Kosowyck and Nils Wikstrom, repaired the post at Hell Corner, which is of course outside our Parish. This also gives me a chance to say I do know how to spell Stan Darley’s name. Sorry Stan. ●We are progressing with Dick Clark’s kind offer of a bench. It won’t be on the triangle, but nearby. ●We are now clear that should it be a bad winter farmers who join in the DCC snow plough scheme won’t have a problem over using red diesel. ●We discussed a number of Playing Field matters and in particular are progressing

with tidying up of the trees. We will be discussing with the tree officer and the neighbouring residents of Mill Lane before we do anything. ●We considered the West Dorset draft Local Plan, which makes no specific reference to the Wriggle Valley villages, and agreed we should consult with other local councils on the possibility of a Neighbourhood Plan to ensure we have locally acceptable planning guidelines. ●We are progressing with a new Parish Council Code of Conduct required by the Localism Act for adoption in September, the earliest we can achieve. ●Lastly we discussed several matters regarding the previous weekend’s atrocious weather, and how we ought to follow them up. ●Don’t forget you can contact us on chetnole-pc@btconnect.com Bob Owen

Wet Wedding Day! “A wet knot is the hardest to untie.” Well Sarah and I certainly hope this is the case. When Sarah left me after the wedding rehearsal, on the evening before our big day, she did say to me “I’ll probably be late!.” Little did I know she would turn out to be three hours late. When we woke up on Saturday 7 July, we were faced with the heaviest rain this area has seen in probably 30 years. The prolonged torrential rain made my return to Chetnole, after final early morning preparation in The Sherborne Hotel (the reception venue) challenging to say the least. After trying to return to the village via Leigh and Yetminster, my best man and his wife (Tommy and Abbie Allatt), one of my ushers (Adam Bowditch) and I, found ourselves stranded in Batcombe. The rising flood water now far too deep to be negotiated by car. Meanwhile, the bride was in Sherborne receiving a phone call from her brother Marc, informing her of the current events. I arrived back in Chetnole after being brought back by 4 x 4 at around 12.15, just 15 minutes before the service was due to start! A new revised time of 1.30pm was organised between my best man and Sarah’s Maid of Honour

10 10

and, as the rain continued to pour, I kept my fingers crossed and got myself suited and booted. The wedding party left Nether Compton at 1.00pm comprising of a Limousine carrying the bridesmaids and Sarah’s mum and Nan, and a Chrysler carrying Sarah and her father. Heading towards Chetnole via the A37 and Stockwood as this was the reputed best route in, the convoy was thwarted by gridlock at the Barwick turning. A combination of flood water and traffic accidents had meant that the road was closed off! A lot of discussion between the Best Man/Maid of Honour ensued with all different kinds of ideas being presented as at this point, a service at St Peter's was looking impossible. Revised plans included a venue change for the ceremony to the Eastbury Hotel, Sherborne. Sarah and I had our hearts set on the service being held in Chetnole, so cue the fantastic residents of Chetnole! Forced with no alternative, the wedding party turned around and headed to Sherborne to be met by a bunch of Chetnolions, who had volunteered their off-road vehicles to transport the wedding party to church! From

Sherborne the 4x4 convoy just about managed to slowly drive through deep flood water and roads that were strewn with flood debris. Sarah eventually met me at church, after being greeted by a rousing cheer, at around 3.00pm. All most 3 hours late! After a very emotional service, everyone made their way back to Sherborne for the reception, chauffeured by Chetnole residents’ 4x4's again! Sarah and I owe so many thank you's to various people. To Reverend Simon Brignall and all associated with St Peters’ church. To all the residents who offered brollies and wellies to guests. To residents who provided support to myself during my extended wait. And lastly to the residents who transported the wedding party from and to Sherborne. Sarah and I are eternally grateful. Truly what a remarkable day, summed up brilliantly by Reverend Simon Brignall “That was one of the most dramatic services I’ve ever conducted, possibly only out done by a service I held in Africa, where the bride got kidnapped!” Priceless!

this year’s Hermitage Christmas Fair so that you can put it in your diary. It will be held on Saturday December 1 in the Village Hall and more details will follow in future editions of this magazine.

‘Sorry I’m slow’ Songs of Praise – 5 August This notice, in the back of my batteryThis is a final reminder that there will be a Songs of Praise service, to raise money electric car, annoys or amuses many for St. Mary’s Hermitage, on Sunday 5 drivers. August starting at 6p.m. This will be followed by Pimms and eats on the lawn at Church Farm. For those who cannot attend the church service, the Pimms and eats will be available from 7pm. Sheep Racing - 27 August It’s nearly here! The highlight of the summer - Sheep Racing on Hermitage Village Green – is on August Bank Holiday Monday. As well as the races, there will be Gun Dog demonstrations , Dog Agility and Dog Show, Skittles , plus a Barbeque and Bar. Entrance to the races is free and car parking on the Green is £1 per vehicle. It all begins at 2.30pm. Village Hall Committee & AGM 11 September The Annual General Meeting of the committee will be held on Tuesday 11 September starting at 7.30pm in the Village Hall and all are welcome. Harvest Festival – 7 October The Harvest Festival service will be held in St. Mary’s on 7 October, starting at 6.30pm., and this will be followed by Harvest supper in the Village Hall at 7.45pm. If you would like to come to the Supper it would be very much appreciated if you could call me on 210360 so that we know how many to cater for.

I stuck this in my current (and 3rd) car – a tiny little Ligier. Our old Fiesta battery car served us well for 40,000 miles but finally rusted away. Its 6-year old battery and motor were still good. The Ligier was cheap because it was in bad condition with the engine irreparably broken. With help from Steve Addison, Edwin Parrott, John Tite, and many friends, I got the Ligier road-worthy and transferred the ‘electrics’ into it. So I now have a useable car, with a 64 volt battery which I charge from solar panels and from the ‘Economy 7’ mains electricity at night. Road tax is zero, and insurance is cheap because it is slow. Yes, it is slow; maximum up Dancing Hill is 34 mph. But it suits me well, and has a range of at least 80 miles, ample to visit my wife in the dementia nursing home at Martock. It is a 2-pedal car, easy to drive, with no gear change; instead it has a simple ‘variomatic’ belt drive. But its short wheel base and small wheels don’t like our uneven country roads and pot-holes!

St Andrew's Church, Leigh On Saturday September 8th the annual Dorset Historic Churches' Ride and Stride is being held. David and I hope to cycle and would be very pleased if others would join us and if you do not feel so inclined, perhaps you would sponsor us?! As we hope the charity may give St Andrew's Church some money towards our extension project, we feel we must make an effort to raise some money for them this year. Also we would be grateful for offers of help in manning the church that day. For entry forms, please contact us. Many thanks Anne Reason 873726 14 14

Many congratulations to Rachel Millward on getting a 1st Class Degree in Environmental Science from Southampton University. She also has a job, starting at the end of July in Ewhurst, Surrey teaching at a field centre. Double congratulations – well done. Please make a note in your diaries that the Harvest Festival Service will be on Friday 5 October at 6.30pm, followed by Harvest Supper at Church Farm. Ryme will be running a stall, in aid of the church roof, at the Charity Netball Tournament on August 19, at the Old Vicarage in Leigh. Tombola and raffle prizes are needed and bric-a-brac, cakes and plants are also all welcome - if everyone could provide one thing that would be a

huge help. Please ring 872982 / 872345 to arrange delivery or collection by Friday 17 August. Some of you will have noticed the return of Bishop Henderson’s bench looking just like new on the corner at the top of the village thank you Andy Templeman for such

fantastic repairs. A man bicycling through the village had stopped and asked where the bench was “I always

stop when coming this way and eat a banana on it!” Frankham Farm Garden Final opening for this year will be on Sunday 14 October between 2.00pm and 5.00pm with tea and cakes and a plant stall. Hopefully

there will be plenty of autumn colours by then but who can tell with the weather! Gilly Wilson wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 21

YETMINSTER..... Local representative: David Torrance (01935) 873979 wvnyetrep@aol.com

I must get Graham to define “volunteer” – the press gangs of Nelson’s time pale into insignificance! – a moment of admin – could you please use wvnyetrep@aol.com as my email address – your articles and info will not then get mixed up with all the adverts for Viagra that I get on my usual address! Well have you ever seen so much rain! I believe the narrow lane connecting Ryme with the A37 remained fordable but it really is quite frightening to see the roads so flooded. I understand that the Fire Brigade had to use a boat to rescue two people at the bridge over the Wriggle near Trill House. I hope as many people as possible toured the various gardens in the village that were open in the better weather – a great sharing idea to help support a number of worthy charities.

By the time you read this we will have had the Annual Street Fair so either it was a beautifully sunny day or it poured with rain! I was wondering where the Yetminster Map had gone? – this used to be adjacent to the Shop and Post Office and was useful to explain the layout of the village but there is now only a bare space. Don’t forget that the West Dorset District Council is continuing to develop a Development Plan for Travellers Sites based on the responses from the earlier consultation that was carried out – this will be available for further consultation soon so please keep an eye on the WDDC website and look out for info in the local press re this. Finally, and I am advised that it’s good to end on a positive note, I am sure we all send congratulations and best wishes to Rachel & Jason on their marriage which was, by all accounts, a splendid affair at The Eastbury in Sherborne with partying until late at the White Hart. Thank You

YETMINSTER

A big thank you to all who helped and supported St.Andrew's Church at the street fair. The flower arrangers beautifying our lovely church, the stewards keeping a watchful eye on events in the church, our produce stall busy bees who made sure everything ran smoothly, selling out as usual and making a profit of £274. A special thank you to Penny Roblin for the use of her kitchen and garage, and not forgetting the hard working gentlemen who erected the stall, dismantling and packing everything away afterwards. Thank you. Valerie Rowsell coffee beans

Strawberry Tea Everyone gave generously, so the gift for the Lord’s Larder was £200. Thank you. We had help from Bill Duggan, Margaret Odlum, Richard Newcomb, Margaret Partridge, and the Barfoots. We couldn’t have done it without you!

TORTOISE IN LOVE Tickets will be £5 to include a choc ice and will be on sale at Oak House Stores two weeks before each showing. Although tickets will be available on the door, it is most appreciated if they are bought in advance so that seating is fairly accurate and enough wine and choc ices be brought to the Hall. Doors will open at 7pm (not before as Moviola need time to set up) and films begin at 7.30pm.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Is it so difficult to clean up after your dog? The fines are expensive and it's the law; as well as a common courtesy. Please may we all work together to make our streets cleaner and safer? We don't currently have any pets, but if in the future I'm out walking the dog one day, I will be there with my gloves and bags immediately as and when we do. I count them as essential as the lead and collar. Is cleaning up after your dog not just part of responsible ownership? Why does it have to be a particular issue? We embrace rural living and want to be part of the community, but dog poo on the doorstep is not a necessity, surely? Here’s hoping for a cleaner future. The Brown family

Georgies hair & beauty studio After spending 26 years at unit 3 Sunnyside, Georgies hair and beauty salon will relocate to The Old School Room at Boyles House in September 2012 and will assume the new name of Georgies hair and beauty studio. Penny Flint who is a qualified stylist took over ownership from Gwen Rutland in 2006; she is clearly looking forward to the move and is delighted to be staying in Yetminster. Penny says “I am really thrilled at the prospect of welcoming new and existing clients to our state of the art studio at The Old School Room where we will be offering a full range of professional salon services, beauty treatments and pamper experiences. I am a little sad to be vacating Sunnyside as I have many fond memories, but Boyles house is a lovely building and I really wanted to stay in Yetminster as it is a beautiful village and I have made many friends here”. Penny will be joined by her daughter Melissa who is a fully qualified beautician. Work has already commenced on converting the Old School Room and will shortly be followed by fitting out the studio with up to the minute salon and beauty equipment and stocked with the

latest product ranges. Penny added “we are a professional and friendly studio and as well as our normal services, will be offering many high quality treatments and beauty services from waxing to ear piercing from fingers to toes along with tailored treatment and hair packages for weddings and Proms”. Melissa added “I am also delighted that we are staying in Yetminster and we will be working very hard to ensure that our clients experience is an enjoyable one plus there is the opportunity for our clients to visit the excellent coffee shop next door”. Penny also stated that to ensure continuity and ensure a smooth transition to please note the existing salon at Sunnyside will continue to operate as usual until October and to look out for Georgies special offers and promotions including the launch of their www site. For further information and appointments please telephone 01935 873163. Penny Flint

Simplicity HomeKey Hello,my name is Andrew Millward. I am a resident of Ryme Intrinseca and a student studying computing at Portsmouth University. I have recently been involved at the old Vicarage Care Home in Leigh, organising simple computer based activities for residents. We have been using a system developed by Simplicity Computers (called the “Envelope”) and have been seeing incredible results. It is a simple, safe and secure way to use computers. After just a few sessions, we now have residents confidently sending emails, surfing the web, and using Skype to talk to and see relatives on the other side of the world. The Simplicity 'Envelope' has been designed specifically for people with very little or no experience with computers. The simple layout allows individuals to quickly gain confidence,

46 46

and it includes informative tutorials by Valerie Singleton to get people started, as well as mouse exercises and simple games. The Simplicity Envelope is available on a range of new PCs, but if you already own a computer, it is easy to convert to the Envelope system through a 'Simplicity Homekey'. This can be used on most computers up to 8 years old. It comes with an A4 colour instruction manual, and is a fraction of the cost of buying a new computer. If you would like more information about the Envelope system, would like a demonstration, or have an old PC you would like to convert to Simplicity, you can contact me by:- phone: 07561543464 or e-mail: Andy@Simplicityclub.com Andrew Millward

…there’s nowt so fascinating as Folk …

Rough Music In Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge there is a graphic description of an event in which an effigy of Michael Henchard is paraded through the town to the derision of the townsfolk and to the accompaniment of rough music. If you travel just a few miles out of the county to Montacute, you will see, as part of the frieze in the Great Hall of Montacute House, a depiction of a similar event. A skimmity ride, or skimmington, was a barbaric practice in which people poured scorn on someone who they felt was a social pariah – perhaps someone guilty of infidelity or a husband who they felt was henpecked by his wife. An effigy of the object of their derision was paraded on the back of a donkey and the ‘revelers played loud rough music as they accompanied the figure on its journey. The Montacute House figure has the added ignominy of being made to ride backwards on its donkey. The rough music would not have been musical at all. People carried and hit anything they could lay their hands on – pots, pans, frying pans, saucepans – anything that would make a noise when hit by a big wooden spoon, or they blew anything that would make a resonant noise. Nowadays people seem to be vilified through the pages of the so-called ‘popular press’ and it might be tempting to think that a skimmity ride might have been a figment of Hardy’s imagination, but there is an account in Udal’s Dorsetshire Folklore of one being recorded in the pages of the Bridport News as recently as 1884 – in other words well within the memory of a 70 year old’s grandparents. Three characters were featured, one male and two female, one of whom had ‘…an extraordinarily long

48 48

tongue, which was tied back to the neck, whilst in one hand she held some notepaper, and in the other pen and holder’. A similarly anarchic piece of music can be heard every year at midnight as the day of Sherborne’s Pack Monday Fair dawns. A motley crew of revelers parade the streets in the guise of Teddy Roe’s Band. They serenade the sleeping populace with a loud, raucous and largely tuneless noise. Who knows the age or origins of the custom, but it is a living example of a genuinely old community celebration Rough music can best be described as an example of communal anarchy, but recently Philippa and I have been the recipients of a great deal of community help and support. Our move from Church Farm into 2 Church Farm Cottages has come during the very worst of the weather and we have moved both ourselves and our business, Folk South West, from one of the village’s largest houses to one of the smallest. Friends and neighbours have been overwhelmingly kind and helpful in so many ways, from lifting heavy filing cabinets and boxes and boxes of books, to cooking us food, to helping us with our new office, to lending us things, to giving us the kindest of good wishes and not criticising us for forgetting to do things. We are enormously grateful for all that help, and enormously grateful that we live in such a friendly and supportive village. The music here is anything but rough! Eddie Upton, Folk South West

NEWS FROM ST ANDREWS’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL

Reflections St Andrews CE Primary School is a very happy school and that’s official. As our academic year draws to a close and our year 6 children reflect on their time spent here they realise what a splendid and privileged time they have had. Molly describes our school as being “a big adventure leading up to going to “Big School”, an adventure not to be forgotten. When you find a friend at this school you have a friend for life through ups and downs. Our school has made me what I am today and I will never forget all the teachers who have helped my progress along the way.” Isabell also feels that “this school has taught me and leaving will be truly the hardest part. Thank you to all my teachers who have helped me along an unforgettable journey!” Ethan reminisces “ever since I braved climbing out from my mum’s arms I have had the best seven years of my life. We have an awesome headmaster, Mr Miller, who is amazing at cricket. I have loved all the school trips from walking in tiny wellington boots through the mud in a farm in Reception, culminating in the best ever trip to PGL in year 6 which was absolutely amazing”. School trips are fond memories for all of the children leaving this summer and indeed they give all the children a chance to grow and discover things they didn’t know about themselves. “Gearing up and looking upwards to the tower didn’t seem a very daunting prospect; I’d been on a zip wire before. There was a lot to remember. I had my go last of all, not out of choice (I would have loved to go first) and I climbed

the tower; the view was quite breathtaking. I could see the whole site of Osmington and my class mates talking to each other. Finally the rope came back to us and I was strapped in to the zip wire and suddenly I was pushed off the tower. I came zooming towards the opposite tower then accidentally lent back and fell upside down. I straight away righted myself seeing the opposite tower very close. Luckily I didn’t crash and got down safely. That day I had thoroughly enjoyed!”Harry VB We are glad you take with you special memories of our school, the teachers and support staff, school the trips and of course your friends. We wish you all the best in your next exciting adventure – the move to senior school. We are also losing Mellina Wall one of our Chestnut teachers who is moving onto St Gilda’s in Yeovil and teaching Assistant Becki Bath who is going on to train as a teacher. We will miss you all. Have a brilliant and sun filled summer (we can but hope) Bella NeateClegg www.standrewsyetminster.org.uk/

News from our Churches Love and marriage go together...?

‘N

ot Hell or high water’, as the saying goes kept Simon and Sarah apart! We drove through the floods, rolled up our trousers and waited for the bride who was stranded in Sherborne. A rescue party was sent and three hours later to great rejoicing they were married! This year has been a bumper year for marriages in the Wriggle Valley, each one a joyful celebration of love and commitment bringing together not just two people in love but also families, friends and whole communities. However marriage as we know it as ‘The voluntary union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others.’ is under threat not just by floods but by the proposed legislation to legally redefine marriage. The concern of many is expressed by the enormous number of people who have signed the Coalition for Marriage petition, over 185,000 and rising. Why should we be concerned to confine marriage to the union of a man and a woman when ‘Love and marriage go together...’ can’t we just share the benefits around to anyone who wants to express their love in this way. It is a very real privilege for Clergy to be part of this celebration not least because it speaks so clearly about the values we believe lie at the

52 52

heart of a healthy society. Bringing together a man and a woman in marriage, as we learn in the Preface to the marriage service, is the place where we which society, I believe learn to ‘grow together in love rightly, has created. Civil and trust’, it is the place partnerships are essentially a where husband and wife come private arrangement, giving together ‘in the delight and rights and protection to same tenderness of sexual union sex couples. This brings and joyful commitment to the stability and commitment but end of their lives’. It provides it is not marriage. Under the the ‘foundation for family life proposed legislation civil in which children are born partnerships would remain and nurtured.’ When we have valid but marriage as the said all that we may think we union of a man and a woman have said all there is to say would no longer be about marriage, but the recognised as separate and Preface goes on to talk about distinct partnership. Marriage the role of marriage in society. as we understand it would ‘It enriches society and disappear. strengthens community.’ The case for marriage When a man and a woman between same sex couples is come together in marriage often made on the basis of they do so not just for equality; the benefits of themselves but for the good of marriage should be available the rest of us! to all. The result of confusing Marriage then is like marriage, however, which jigsaw, it brings together the exists not just for the benefit two parts of the human family, of the couple but for all of us, the male and female providing would diminish marriage and the glue which unites damage society. It is not sexuality, children, education, enough to say ‘love and welfare, families, generations, marriage go together...’ As communities and wider public we proclaim loudly in the life. We cannot separate out marriage service ‘What God these elements of married life has joined together let no one in a ‘pick and mix’ fashion put asunder’ and call it marriage, only marriage, as defined by our Rev. Simon Brignall present laws brings them all together. Of course there are www.wrigglevalleybenefice.org other forms of partnership

A

s you probably read in last months’ magazine, our Minister, Rev Choi and his wife Sarah are leaving us in August. We wish them well in their new ministry at New Harlow. During the 5 years that Choi has been our minister, there have been some challenging times, and we are extremely grateful for his leadership and care. We shall be giving them our thanks and our final farewells at a special joint service at the Cheap Street Church in Sherborne on Sunday, 29 July at 6.30 pm. You are welcome to come to that service and share the celebration of their time with us. From September, we look forward to welcoming Rev Roy Catchpole from Milborne Port who will be looking after us for a while. We shall also be benefiting from the appointment to our Circuit of Mr Gary Hoare - a Methodist Deacon. Mr Hoare will be leading our worship at Yetminster on 9 September and you are invited to come and meet him. Some of you may have heard of an event called “The Big Welcome”. Many churches throughout England, Scotland and Wales are taking part in this initiative on Sunday 23 September. It is designed to get Christians to invite someone they know to something they love - which could be a meal, an outing or coming to church. It so happens that on that day we are celebrating our Harvest Festival - so this is our “Big Welcome” extended to every reader to join us and help us celebrate. Our service at 10.45 am will be conducted by Rev Christina Le Moignan from Sherborne and at 6pm we shall be singing some of the well known harvest hymns followed by our usual Harvest Supper. This edition of the magazine is for August and September and we trust you all have a good summer break - with some real Summer weather !! (At the time of writing, we are surrounded by floods). Some of you may be visiting, or even taking part in some of the Olympic events or, like me, watching it on T.V. If we have the opportunity, let’s make sure we give a genuine warm welcome to those visiting our country during this momentous year Cliff Harris wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 53

Leigh Weather Watch June 2012 “Summer has set in with its usual severity.” Samuel Taylor Coleridge 1772-1834

The poet may have been used to poor summers 200 years ago but even he would have been stirred to write an even more mournful ode to dull skies and flooded fields this year. Rainfall Up to now, 2007 had held the rainfall record for June, with an exceptional 112mm (4.4”). This ‘summer’ month drenched us with 148mm (5.8”), beating the old record by 32%. This was four times the usual amount but, despite this, the number of dry days (13) was close to the usual average of 12. The difference was due to massive downpours on the days when it did rain, for example 100mm (4”) between June 20 & 22. Despite the earlier panics about drought, 2012 has now seen 445mm (18”) of rain. This is 16% more than usual, but still 14% less than our 2000-2012 record Jan-June total of 531mm (21”) which was also set in 2007.

Temperatures There were few really pleasant days in June but mild, damp air meant that temperatures did not fall too sharply at night. The hottest day reached 26C (79F) instead of 28C (82F) but the average maximum was only 18.7C (66F), 12% cooler than usual. Sunshine Although June had only 4 completely sun-free days (instead of the usual 2) it was a disaster for farmers, sunlovers and holiday makers. There were a mere 60 hours of sunshine instead of the usual 149 far short of 2010’s record 209 hours. Winds Not surprisingly, as they brought so much rain, windspeeds peaked at 34mph instead of 30 and the usual wind direction was southerly instead of SSW. Pressure We were deluged by low pressure weather systems, thoughout June so the average was only 1015mb instead of the 1020mb or more that we usually have in ‘decent’ summers.

…gone gardening Does Your Garden Have the Sniff Factor? Appearances in a border are paramount, there is no denying it. Colour and texture of planting, sequentially flowering plant arrangements, matching colours to create harmony, creating the odd surprise with a hot spot. Visually all of these things are very important but there is nothing quite like fragrance in a garden. It is another dimension entirely that some gardeners forget about, but which insects love and appreciate. ‘Sniff Factor Top Ten’ 1. LAVENDER is easily top of the list, not only is it fragrant but it is functional and can be used for many applications, not least flavouring ice-cream and meringues. Hidcote has the colour to die for but Little Lady has the perfume to intoxicate your senses. Lavender oil is used as a base for most perfume manufacture. 2. JASMINE, the common climber or the evergreen Trachelospermum, the smell is divine. 3. Old fashioned woodbine or HONEYSUCKLE which is found in the wild growing up the trunks of trees, easily the most fragrant of all the honeysuckles. We have some in the far reaches of the garden where footfall is infrequent. 4. ROSES. Notably those among the ones I have potted up from bare root this year, the most fragrant are Black Baccara, Chinatown which is

yellow and Zepherine Drouhin which is a thorn-less pink climber. 5. Among day LILIES the older varieties carry the fragrance. Hemerocallis Diploid Hyperion with its elegant lemon coloured flowers and tidy foliage. Oriental types with a heavy perfume. 6. DIANTHUS or pinks. There are many varieties to choose from and most are fragrant, easy to manage and never fail to please, returning year after year. 7. PHILADELPHUS is an unsung hero, despite being deciduous, this is such a good hardy shrub and there are many varieties to suit any space or aspect. 8. MYRRUS ODORATA, possibly not a plant that everyone is familiar with but better known as Sweet Cecily with an aniseed fragrance. Traditionally fostered by the back door of the cottage. Parts of its stem and flower were used to take the tart out of fruity concoctions like jams and conserves etc., 9. DAPHNE ODORA, Grannies old favourite. An evergreen shrub which flowers early in the spring months, is a valuable asset in any border. 10. NICOTIANA SYLVESTRIS which opens its flower in the shade and exudes a wonderful fragrance. Just fantastic! There are many more, seek them out, plant them in your garden and enjoy your own ‘SNIFF FACTOR’ Sue Dodge, Bailey Ridge Plants

Club NewsChetnole Cricket Club As you read this, the WVPs Panto, “Sleeping Beauty” will have been cast and after a short “summer” break, weekly rehearsals will begin the first Wednesday in September. Then those with parts will have a busy time learning lines and lyrics, as well as stage moves. There is always a lot to do behind the scenes before any performance can go ahead and as Director I have an overview of the panto from the music, scenery, costumes, props and sound effects. I can look forward to a few sleepless nights, trying to cover every aspect of the production! There are so many jobs that need to be done, that there is still plenty of opportunity to get involved with the small team of “unsung heroes” who support each production back stage. So if you would like to be involved in the production, but have no particular ambition to be on the stage, why not come along and help with props and scene changing during the performances? Or maybe you could help paint scenery on the three weekends before the performance in early January,

(you don’t need to be a great artist to help!)? Last year I worked backstage helping with the props for the “Red Riding Hood” production and had great fun making a rat from a couple of socks and pipe cleaners! It’s amazing what you can make for stage effect, it’s a fact that pink tights can look like a string of raw sausages when stuffed with cotton wool! If you are interested in helping in any way, just pop in to Leigh Village Hall any Wednesday evening after 5 September or contact our chairman, John House on 07970819681. You will be very welcome! Yetminster & Ryme Garden, Art and Craft Society Yetminster Open Gardens They say you make your own luck, but how we managed to choose the one decent day for our Open Gardens during this dreadful summer, goodness only knows. Sunday 1 July proved to be a very special day in Yetminster when eleven gardens opened to the public to raise funds for St Margaret’s Hospice and Dorset Air Ambulance. It was a first for many of us and I think we all felt a little nervous. Weeding, mowing, trimming and worrying about the weather became a full time occupation for weeks in advance. Were our gardens up to the expectations of a paying public and supposing nobody came? We needn’t have worried. As the Church clock chimed 2 o’clock, visitors started to arrive – en masse! A modest amount of advertising (and of course the sunshine) attracted local residents as well as people from as far afield as Poole, Blandford and Wincanton. It seems that our interesting mix of gardens, some large and full of adventure, others smaller but simply stunning with their imaginative layout and glorious planting, proved a winning combination. Then of course there was tea in the Church Hall with delicious home made scones and cakes, and tables laid out with cheerful table cloths and decorated with fresh flowers. Everyone who came was friendly, interested and complimentary, so for all of us, the afternoon turned out to be both fun and worthwhile A huge amount of hard work went into preparing for the day, so very special thanks to all the others who opened their gardens: Elizabeth Clothier, Patrick & Frances Moule, George & Marie Sutton, Geoffrey & Mary Simpson, Iain & Emma Fiddler, John & Judy Ferretter, Boney & Judy Pyke, David Gould,

68 68

John & Sue Price and Arminal Dare-Bryan. Jean Bridges and her team did a magnificent job in serving the quintessential English Tea. Two days after the event I received the following email from a Mr Peterson: ‘We just wanted to pass on our thanks - we came to your open gardens and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Very interesting gardens, friendly people, lots to see. It was also nice to have tea and cake included in the price. We go to lots of village open gardens each year and sometimes we feel it's more about making money than viewing gardens sometimes the message gets lost in the fundraising. Well done on an excellent event. Please pass on to all who took part in organising and opening.’ I think that says it all. Well done and thank you so much to all those who participated. And thank you to everyone who supported us. We raised £850 for our two charities. I think we might do it again. July outing On the 10 July we had a glorious day visiting The Garden House Gardens, Buckland Monachor um and Buckland Abbey in Devon. Two heavenly gardens, still looking good in spite of the recent torrential rain. A lovely, peaceful and stress-free day out. Summer Show Our focus for August is the Summer Show on Saturday 18 August. Just a reminder that the closing date for entries is Tuesday 14 August. Pandy Brown

Tuesday Club In June we all looked forward to hearing Bonnie Sartin’s talk on The Lot of the Dorset Labourer. Many of us may have imagined that it was an idyllic life surrounded by the beautiful countryside and prolific crops of Dorset, but a very different state of affairs was revealed. Dorset had a reputation as being the worst county in England for rural poverty. William Cobbet in his Rural Rides tells of three Dorset labourers found dead of starvation in a hedge. At the time of the Tolpuddle Martyrs rural wages of 7 shillings a week were further cut. To maintain life workmen resorted to poaching and the theft of food, with disastrous results if they were caught and convicted. The punishment for poaching was transportation and for stealing bread or potatoes one year’s hard labour.

Branding of a convict transportation to Australia

during

The hard labour for men included a treadmill for grinding corn and for women a treadmill to raise water from the Frome for use in Dorchester gaol. The Times newspaper reported that the conditions of 70 70

farm labourers were the worst in the country, resulting in deformity and disablement from lack of food. Despite this grim tale Bonnie could not refrain from breaking into poetry and song and inviting us to join in some of the choruses, which helped to lighten the atmosphere. Needless to say many people sought to escape or alter these conditions resulting in the Captain Swing riots, most severe in the Blackmore Vale, which took to breaking up threshing machines. Seven men were executed and fifty five transported. Many labourers escaped to cities or emigrated including some from Bonnie’s family. One who delighted Bonnie went to New Zealand where he continued the family tradition of collecting and writing songs. Sylvia Bryan July Outing Tuesday 25 July dawned with damp but warm weather so we all kept our fingers crossed for the rain to keep away, if only for a few hours, so that we wouldn’t have to cut short our annual outing. Our Trips Organiser, Barbara Driver, had arranged a visit to Weymouth Fire Station and then to the local water gardens. We had been introduced to the Education Officer, Dave Allen, from Weymouth Fire Service in January when he and a colleague had given a talk on fire safety in the home but this time he took things a lot further. We were shown slides and videos of various aspects of fire safety and fire damage, particularly the results of leaving cigarettes burning, clothing draped over electric fires, the dangers posed by everyday kitchen items if they are not used correctly, and the many causes of fires within the home. We were also shown what happens if water is poured onto a flaming chip pan or air introduced to

an already burning room; dramatic but very informative. Dave told us about the formation of the Fire Service as we now know it, showing old films of both horse-drawn steam pumps racing along streets and then the work of the Auxillary Fire Service during the Blitz. The Fire Station itself is very modern, opening a year ago, and provides facilities for the local community including rooms where dance classes, martial arts and even discos take place. This is all part of what is called “Fire Wise” which tries to involve the local and wider community in the operation of the Fire Service. There are plans to turn disused land to the side of the Fire Station into a training area for road safety, fire safety and training facilities. We had a very enjoyable lunch at the Station’s “Oh Crumbs” restaurant which offers employment to young disabled adults and is open to everyone – another aspect of the community work which is the ethos of this Fire Station. Then, with the weather improving by the minute we boarded our coach and made the short journey to the water gardens. The lakes were full of water lilies and plants; there were coots with chicks and two “Monet” bridges, one of which had been opened by Paul Daniels. Then, with the sun beginning to hide behind some clouds, we made the journey home. Once again our Trips Organiser had done us proud and we all enjoyed a wonderful and fairly dry day. Ginny Goodall The next Tuesday Club event is a Treasure Hunt and Teas on 25 August at 2.30pm at Blackberry Cottage, South Street and in September John Burgess returns to give us a talk on BBC Wildlife programmes. As always we shall make visitors and new members very welcome.
