BATCOMBE.....

am writing this contribution after an afternoon in the garden with the sun shining down, what a change after the recent months of rain, hopefully this is the start of spring and a good omen for all our fundraising events everywhere. There will not be a service on 13 April as we will have an Easter Sunday Service on 20 April instead and afterwards we will be having a Easter Egg hunt for the children and an Easter Bonnet Parade, perhaps the adults would like to join in the parade with their efforts. The reason for writing is that Max now being an Adult has the great support of the charity Headway in Bournemouth. We held a small coffee morning in Dorchester on Making Headway Valentines day and raised As many of you know just under ÂŁ100.00 . Lastly I would also like to add that like many charities Headway rely on donations , so if any of you are at a loss as to what charity to raise money for , please would you keep Headway in mind? CHETNOLE.....

e begin this month in sombre mood as the village bids a final farewell to three of its residents. Jean Woodford of Kyford, David Walker of Spring Cottage and Dick Clarke of Bowhayes all sadly passed away very recently and we would like to take this opportunity to convey our most sincere condolences to those closest to them. Good luck to Rod and Anna who have moved from Heneford Mill to Braggs Farm, Stockwood. We are so glad you are not leaving us and hope you will be very happy in your new home. A warm welcome to the new family at Heneford Mill; I am sure we will meet you soon. As winter hopefully turns into spring Chetnole starts to look prettier and prettier with the daffodils and blossom on the trees but the sun can be deceptive and the cold winds still bite. Dashing around on such a morning today, I popped to the village hall to use the Wednesday Post Office and immediately stepped

We and our family would most sincerely like thank all those who sent messages of sympathy following the death of Mary's father at The Old Vicarage Care Home on 16 February. He was 98. Our special thanks go to the staff at The Old Vicarage who surrounded him with compassion and comfort in his final days. A Requiem Mass was held at the Catholic church in Sherborne on 10th March attended by a congregation of about 90 - including 20 from Chetnole. We thank you all for giving Dad such a warm and friendly farewell.

As you know, Chetnole has been flooded many times in recent years. Part of the problem is the road drains: I recently counted five between Stockwood road and Hamlet that were fully or partially blocked. I am writing to encourage as many people as possible to report these to Dorset Highways, either via the website ww.dorsetforyou.com/traveldorset/roads-and-driving/report-a-roadproblem and by using the interactive form to report a new problem as I have, or by ringing 01305 221020. David Walker 1934 – 2014 It is with sadness that we record the passing of David Walker who died peacefully at Yeovil Hospital on 19 February at the age of 79. David was born in Australia in 1934 and read geology at Sydney University before coming to the UK in the late 1950s. David’s work carried him to numerous countries round the globe and it was on one of his many overseas trips that he was to meet his future wife, Leonora. They married in London in 1961. David and Leonora spent most of the 1970s in the USA. After their return to this country they set about house hunting and eventually found The Old Coach House at Foys into which they settled in 1978 with their two young sons. David was closely involved professionally with the oil industry and for the last few years before his retirement was CEO of Britoil. In 1992 David and Leonora decided to move house once more, this time but a short distance, from The Old Coach House to Spring Cottage in Neals Lane. Both David and Leonora developed a great attachment to

Chetnole and David in particular became deeply interested in its history, this being much stimulated by the historic nature of Spring Cottage itself. He greatly assisted Paul & Annette Hallett with their book on the history of Chetnole, the front cover of which is graced with an illustration by Leonora, and he also produced an excellent booklet himself on the history of St. Peter’s Church. David gained great enjoyment from many local activities, not least from Chetnole Cricket Club of which he was a great supporter, playing as a team member when he could and serving on its committee. Over the last few years David suffered increasingly from serious issues with his back which greatly restricted his physical involvement with so many activities. His deteriorating health made him ever more dependent on Leonora’s devoted care, and latterly that of professional carers as well. Our sincerest condolences go to Leonora and also to their sons, Ian and Andrew and their respective families.

Local Government Boundary Commission You will have received a document from Chetnole and Stockwood Parish Council through your letterbox in March explaining West Dorset District Council’s proposals to redraw local ward boundaries and for Chetnole to become part of a new Frome Valley Ward with Sydling, Cattistock and Frome St Quintin - we would no longer be part of Yetminster ward as a result. These proposals can be viewed at www.lgbce.org.uk/allreviews/south-west/dorset and the consultation period ends on 28 April if you would like to submit your views.

HILFIELD....

Michael was born at the Yeatman Hospital on the 25th February 1966. At the time of his birth the family lived in Leigh, and it was about a year later that they moved to Hermitage, firstly living in a mobile home, until father Brian built the family bungalow. Michael was about three years old when he started his collection of transport vehicles, a passion he retained all his life. He attended Sunday School in St. Mary’s conducted by the Brothers from Hilfield Friary and in January 1971 he started primary school at St Andrews in Leigh, and in 1977 moved to St Aldhelm's Secondary Modern (now the Gryphon) in Sherborne. At 16 Michael left school and attended day release at Kingston Maurward Agricultural College whilst working for Norman Buckland at Evershot. Sometime later he joined Trevor Cuff contractors where, along with normal contracting duties, he learnt the art of hedge trimming. Using these skills he joined John Perry on the Hilfield estate working on all tractor driver duties. Around 1991 Mike married his first wife and to his delight his daughter Jessica was born in 1995 and his son Scott in 1998. very wet and windy service was had at St Nicholas. The weather, however, was in great contrast to the very warm and friendly service we had thanks to Simon. Welcome to the Faulkner family who have just moved into 2, Church View Cottage.

Upon leaving Perrys he moved to Peter Yeatman, and during this time he was able to gain his HGV licence which opened the doors to his first lorry driving job with Norman Young. Michael and Amanda started seeing each other in 2003 and after a whirlwind romance, they were married 2005. They soon bought their home in Sherborne, which was chosen not for its location or homely feel but for the workshop and garage in the back garden. This is where Michael spent many happy hours continuing his obsession with agricultural transport, classic transport and reclamation. In 2006 Michael joined BOCM Paulls as a bulk lorry driver, later helping to run the transport operation as an office based transport manager until late 2013. In 2008 he was diagnosed with Sarcoma soft tissue cancer, which shaped the way in which he was to live his life to the full over the next 7 years. Michael, who always lived in Dorset, attended Hermitage events whenever it was possible He did achieve a big goal and, with the help of friends, was able to restore his Field Marshall tractor (which he had stored for the last 12 years) back to full working and show- room condition and finally get to a vintage rally show last autumn. Michael was loved by friends and family and thought a lot of by his workmates, and he will be sadly missed.

Little Mack, along with all the children, was very brave to last the service. Welcome too, to the Jackson family, who have just moved into 1, Church View Cottage - we look forward to meeting soon. All in all a busy time for Hilfield! Next service Sunday 20 April 4pm Easter Day. Justine Algar wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 13

LEIGH.....

y the time you read this we will have had Mothering Sunday and the clocks will have sprung forward! We will be hurtling towards Easter and anxious to see which out of the Oak and the Ash comes into leaf first; Oak before the Ash, we shall have a splash. Ash before the Oak, we shall have a soak. Either way, we are all hoping that this will mean that we shall not need our heating on, but just in case John Sanford would like to remind everyone that heating oil is due in Leigh on 10 April and 23 May. On 12 April (NOT 20 April as I put in the magazine last month!) The Old Vicarage will be having their Spring Coffee morning from 10.30-

Leigh Fuel Group 2014 Dates for future oil deliveries: { 10 April { 23 May { 28 August { 6 November You may order any quantity above the legal minimum of 500 litres. You will pay the best group price I can negotiate with the supplier on the day. Please advise if a phone call is required to gain access. Contact John Sanford five working days prior to the listed dates above.

12 noon. Do go along and have a cup of something and search for a bargain. Don’t wait until the 20 as you cannot be certain of getting a cup of anything then! Many of us have had friends and family who have been affected by cancer. On 10 May Sue Fudge and Jane Jeans will be taking part in the London Moonwalk to raise funds for breast cancer charities. The event is 26.5 mile walk around London at night – wonderful but exhausting! They will be holding a coffee morning and jumble / cake sale from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday 3 May in Leigh Village Hall and would like to invite everyone to come along and support them. I am sure many of us will be more than happy to eat cake in such a good cause! Meanwhile - Fingers crossed for the Oak! Philippa Toulson

Four hardy residents ventured out on a cold and blustery February afternoon and were rewarded with a beautiful display of snowdrops in the tiny village of Compton Valence. Tea and cake were gratefully consumed in the village hall afterwards. The cold and wet days have been punctuated by a wide array of events, including the village pantomime, and a fascinating talk on Japan (thank you Sandra!). Sue Dona continued with her series of talks on Italy, this time we visited Rome and also enjoyed some sweet Italian treats. Larry Skeats entertained us with his ” with a version of “ fascinating array of mystery items. Larry has not only written a book on his life as a shepherd, but has raised over £20,000 for the Weldmar Hospice. We look forward to welcoming him back soon. We celebrated St. David’s day with a “host of golden daffodils” and Florence played classic Welsh tunes on the harp. here have been several changes in the village since the new year. Farewell to Gordon and Janet Wells in the Granary, who have moved into sheltered housing at Wyndham Hill in Yeovil. Reports from their family are that they are enjoying joining lots of new activities. Welcome to Richard and Leslie Hanson who are moving into Eve’s home at 2 Manor Farm Cottages. Welcome also to

Gene Finn and Matthew Thorndale who have moved into 2a New Buildings with their two spaniels; Gene was originally from Illinois and more recently form Weymouth. Matthew is in Hotel Management in Weymouth and Gene in retail Management. Hope they will all be very happy in Ryme. FRANKHAM FARM NGS Garden Open Sunday 27 April 27th 2-5pm. plants tea & cakes. number of ideas for commemorating the First World War have been proposed. On 29 April there will be a lecture entitled "History of the Victoria Cross" in aid of the Yetminster Village Hall project. I have volunteered, with the encouragement of the Parish Council, to plan an exhibition in the Yetminster Village Hall in the autumn to commemorate, in particular, the participation of local residents in the First World War. With the help of others I intend to research the men of Yetminster and Ryme Intrinseca who lost their lives in the Great War. I would be most grateful if anyone who has knowledge of these men, for example where they fought, where they fell and where they were buried and any information about their time in their respective villages, could get in touch with me. I have listed those men below. I will also be looking for interesting exhibits which local residents might have, relevant to the First World War. These 20 20

YETMINSTER.....

he Jubilee Hall Committee have recently removed the old projector screen from the end of the hall and have replaced it by painting the wall white. On the face of it not an earth shattering change but I must admit that the viewing improvement at the Moviola showing that I went to was certainly noticeable with the film taking on the wide screen look - there was also the benefit that I did not have to peer around a rather familiar taller gentleman from the village who is a regular cinema patron! The Meaden’s Open Space saga continues and outline drawings were shown at the last meeting of the Parish Council. The person putting forward the proposal has been asked to consult local residents and it has been suggested that she and her supporters hold a public meeting so, if you feel you will be affected by the development in one way or another, or if you have ideas or indeed concerns about what is being proposed do watch out for the details of where and when. I have again had several people contact me with regard to dog fouling and this is one of the arguments with regard to the Meaden’s space. I am sure most of you animal lovers do try but I have had particular complaints that the High Street has been particularly unpleasant recently so perhaps a phone call to the Dog Warden service (01305 251010) may help to deter those errant owners when you spot an offending activity - having checked with the Warden they would appreciate a photograph (the camera on your mobile phone will do) of the offending animal and owner as well if possible. Hopefully you will recall the exhibition on schooling in the village by the History Society in the Gallery and

Yetminster & Ryme Intrinseca Parish Council Summary of COUNCIL MEETING 19 February 2014 The meetings were attended by 11 councillors, DCllr Lawrence, four members of the public and the Clerk. Meadens Open Space Marie Wills was asked to carry out a full residential survey and convene a resident’s meeting. The Council will consider the matter when these are completed. Planning There were no contentious planning issues. One contentious issue in Ryme had already been approved by WDDC Boyles Footpath As 19 February the Parish Council is responsible for the upkeep of this footpath. The County Council has repaired the fence. Speed Cameras These are now in use but more volunteers are required so that coverage can be improved. If you are interested please contact Councillor Brian Knight or the Clerk Parish Plan An application for a grant to progress this important plan has been made; in addition it is hoped to produce a neighbourhood plan which if approved would give the Council some power to control development. A full consultation with residents will be carried out in due course. 20mph Limit This matter was raised but in the absence of the County Councillor could not be progressed David Gould 24 24

Yetminster Jubilee Hall The good news is that Yetminster Jubilee Hall is now an officially recognised Charity. The final lease negotiations will not be completed until after the installation of our new Three Valleys Team Rector in May. So the hall is still St Andrew's Hall until May at the earliest. We are finalising our fund-raising events for the year and would draw your attention to the fascinating talk on the History of the Victoria Cross by Lt Colonel Mike Martin which takes place at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 29 April. in St Andrew's Hall. Refreshments will be available from 7 pm. In other news, we have secured the purchase of 256

square feet of staging which will be of great benefit to anyone wanting to put on a play or entertainment where a platform for the performers is beneficial. It comes in 4'x4' storable units giving us good flexibility. Once again we would like to thank all those who continue to support the Hall and its activities. We will be having a Quiz Evening and Autumn Food Fair. All these details will be announced in full shortly. Simon Eadon

The Yetminster Footpath Saved! Residents of Yetminster were dismayed when they discovered that their use of a long-standing footpath (often know as the Donkey Path) used by many pupils at St Andrews CE Primary School and other residents was at risk. A number of local bodies worked together to save it. Dorset County Council had for many years paid a licence fee to local educational charity

Boyle’s Educational Foundation for use of part of its land for the footpath. But DCC decided that, in these times of austerity, it could no longer afford to do so. That would have meant the path, which is not a public footpath, would possibly be lost. However Yetminster and Ryme Intrinseca Parish Council has stepped in to save the path. Boyle’s have agreed to waive all but a nominal licence fee for the its

continued use. The Parish Council on its part will maintain the path and keep it in good order. DCC did its bit by fixing the fence, which had deteriorated over the years, before its licence expired, so that the Parish Council starts with a fully maintained footpath which can go on providing an amenity for the residents of Yetminster in the coming years. GENERAL NEWS

What a month and what weather we have seen. The children at St Andrew's unfortunately had their Valentines Disco postponed on Friday 14 February as it was just too wet and too much flooding! Luckily we rescheduled and all the children had a fantastic evening on Thursday 27 February. They dressed to impress and danced the night away, well from 6.30-8pm. Photographs from the evening can be seen via www.annataylorphotography.co.uk The PTFA would like to thank Daryn Elford and Tony Sucliffe for being the DJ's and also everyone who helped set up, man stalls and clear away at the end of the evening. Just under £300 was raised for the PTFA which will go towards our revamp of the outside classroom. On Friday 4 April we have our 2nd Family Bingo evening. Doors open at 6pm and eyes down at 6.30pm. Children are very welcome. This is being held at St Andrew's School Hall. The fish and chip bus will be at the school on that evening so you can get your fish and chip supper either before the bingo or after. On Saturday 26 April we have our charity ball at Stockbridge Farm Barn,

Thank you Wriggle Valley readers One year after its launch, Green Man Tree & Garden Services has branched out in many ways! Having retired in March 2013 from a 27 year career in the Royal Marines, Ed Ramsbottom has had a very busy year and is overwhelmed by the response he’s had from Wriggle Valley readers – the Yetminster area has yielded more work than any other; both for hard landscaping, tree work and garden work. “I can’t believe I was so apprehensive about leaving the Marines,” said Ed. “I was so worried about how I’d feel after so long in that career, and how I would manage doing such a different job and working alone; but I have not missed it at all. I miss the camaraderie and the company of other Marines but I have loved my work this past year and met some wonderful

people; many of whom have employed me more than once during the year and who I am always happy to see. I am lucky to be now enjoying another career that I love.” Alongside garden design and build work, this year has also seen Ed designing and constructing ponds, including a large formal pond at East Chelborough and a complex informal pond, patio with water rill, bridge and knot garden at East Coker. He also built small show gardens at the RHS Malvern and Hampton Court shows and next year will be working on the famous Japanese water garden at the National Trust property Cliveden in Berkshire. “I really like working with ponds. There are some beautiful aquatic plants that one never gets to see or know about unless one has a pond;

POGLES’ WOOD Activity Days Spring is Sprung

…there’s nowt so

fascinating as Folk …

One day a year – Inventing Tradition The cuckoo comes in April, it sings its song in May, It changes it in June, in July it flies away. Philippa and I went to a lovely event the other day in St Andrews School, Yetminster as part of World Book Day. I think pretty well every child (and all the teachers) had dressed up as a character from a book. There were several Harry Potters, a few Horrid Henrys and one or two Where’s Wallys as well as some more surprising characters including an impressive Gabriel Oak (from Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd). Later that day, when Philippa looked at Facebook on the Internet, she discovered photographs of children dressed as literary characters right across the country. World Book Day was ‘invented’ in 1995 and it seems that it has become a modern tradition in a very short time. Last Friday the church in Yetminster hosted a special service for another invented annual tradition. Women’s World Day of Prayer can be traced back to an event in 1887, which became a worldwide event in 1927. I find it an inspiring thought that women from more than 170 countries are united in focusing their thoughts on a common theme on the same day every year. You would think (well, I would, anyway) that St George’s Day, 23 April, would be full of traditional events. It is remembered as Shakespeare’s birthday, and also as the day of his death, and we nowadays use the day as an opportunity to fly the flag of St George on our public buildings, especially our churches, but we do little else to celebrate our patron saint. Perhaps it is because there may be some doubt about his very existence, or, perhaps because he is claimed by so many different places – as well as England, his day is celebrated in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Macedonia,

Portugal, Romania, and Serbia as well as Aragon, Catalonia, Majorca, and Valencia. We all know about St George and the dragon, but perhaps even that isn’t based on fact. As early as the 1680’s, John Aubrey was including this rhyme in his diary: To save a maid, St George the dragon slew. A pretty tale, if all is told be true. Most say there are no dragons; and ‘tis said There was no George. Pray God there was a maid! I doubt if the gardeners amongst us will need much reminding that this year April 18th is the day for planting potatoes and garlic, for that is Good Friday. The Devil’s powers are said to be greatly diminished on this solemn holy day, so pretty well whatever we plant is in with a good chance of doing OK. I live in a house with two vegetarians. I’m happy to eat meat, but equally at home with a vegetarian meal, but I was brought up to observe Good Friday as a day of fasting. This didn’t mean not eating but it did mean not eating meat. Here I am in my 70th year and it still doesn’t seem right to even think about having a bit of bacon with my breakfast or a ham sandwich at lunchtime on that day. The forces of tradition are strong indeed. If you pop into your local church during the 40 days of Lent you will see that there are no floral decorations, and on Good Friday itself all forms of decoration are taken down, with the altar itself being stripped bare. Then on Easter Day everything bursts back into life with an abundance of beautiful flowers and white and gold cloths on the altar and pulpit. It is as though the church has suddenly leapt into the joys of spring after the solemnity and sobriety of Lent. … and of course I haven’t mentioned that ‘the cuckoo comes in April’! Eddie Upton

NEWS FROM ST ANDREW’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL

St Andrew’s celebrates success Katrina Halford is presented with the Primary Science Teacher Award We are delighted to announce that Katrina Halford, an Advanced Skills Teacher in Ash Class (Years 4 & 5), has been awarded a coveted Primary Science Teacher Award which recognises excellence in Primary Science Teaching. She was presented with one of twenty-five awards given in the country in any one year, at our whole school assembly on Thursday 13 March by Professor Dudley Shallcross, Director of the Primary Science Teacher Trust and Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry, Bristol University. He gave a delightful presentation and between him and the children they established that there must be over 200,000 primary school teachers in the UK and thus this award was even more amazing! Well done Mrs Halford. The Primary Science Teaching Trust was set up in 1997 by a well-known pharmaceutical company to support science teaching in UK primary schools. Other industries have contributed to

promoting science education but most have concentrated on secondary and university programmes. Research has shown that many young people do not have positive attitudes to science in their secondary education, perhaps partly due to variable experiences of science in their primary schools and as such the trust has now funded the establishment of the Primary Science Teacher College which is committed to improving the teaching of science to primary school children in the UK. Katrina now automatically becomes one of around 80 members of the College of which allows these excellent teachers to develop new projects, undertake professional development and disseminate best practice from their own teaching and that from the Trust funded work. As a new college member Katrina is to be part of the panel looking at the new End of Key Stage Two tests in

order to maintain their power and exert their right of exclusive possession of Jerusalem. Yet Jesus’ life, work and most significantly, death were not to be determined by either religious or military power. His life was planned and directed by God Himself, and his mission would unfold in God’s time and according to God’s will. We might ask why Jesus was focusing on Jerusalem. The answer lies in the fact that Jerusalem, the City of God, symbolised the entire nation as it does today. It was, and is still, Israel’s largest city and the nation’s spiritual and political capital, but Jerusalem had a history of rejecting God’s prophets. Now it would reject his Messiah just as it had rejected his forerunners. Little wonder that Jesus wept as he said: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill prophets and stone those sent to you, how often have I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! Look your house is left to you desolate. ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’.”

A plague on all our houses if we fail to react to what is so clearly wrong with Jerusalem to this very day; for yes, we have good cause to weep. But the time for weeping is now over; it is time to start mobilising God’s love to counter such a self-destructing environment, be it here, Jerusalem or anywhere else. Only then will we be blessed, because we come in the name of the Lord. That is the chalice that Christ hands to each of us. Rev. Michael Anderson.

As I sit down to write this article I have just put the phone down after confirming our move with the Removal Company. It has somehow made the whole thing both much closer and more real. I am looking forward to coming and working with you. In many ways this is a coming home because Nicola’s family comes from Dorset and we have both had a long relationship with Hilfield Friary. When we visited for the interview both Nicola (my wife) and I felt that God was calling us to this position but at the same time looking at the scope of the work I can’t help feeling a little daunted by it. Michael Anderson very kindly spent a whole day in late February taking us around the various churches and I have to say my head was spinning afterwards but my impression was of well loved and cared for places of worship. As many of you will know I have spent the last 26 years as an RAF chaplain and have served in many parts of the world. Sometimes I have been on my own as the chaplain and sometimes I have led a large team spread over a big geographical area similar to the new Three Valleys Benefice. If there is one thing that I have learned over this period it is that it is the people on the ground who do all the work and that without your good will and support it doesn’t matter what exalted ranks or titles I am given I will be able to achieve very little. That being the case it will be my intention over my first few weeks and months in post to go into overdrive getting around to meet as many people as possible with the intention of learning in what way I can serve you best. Nicola and I will be moving into the Thornford Rectory just after Easter. We like to think we are sociable people and we look forward to welcoming you to our new home once we are sorted out.

...gone gardening Gardening is the Best Medicine The effects of cabin fever have been of major concern at the doctor’s surgery this year. Brits have become grumpy and anti-social shuffling around in warm woolly coats, flat caps and furry boots for most of the winter and that’s only indoors! They have rushed around to do chores so that they can get home before dark to huddle by their woodstoves. Neighbours have become long lost acquaintances over the last three months. The guy next door has grown a wild man beard! The lady across the road is in the family way and Aunt Mavis has suddenly taken a shine to the sherry bottle. The sun is out! Emerge human from your dimly lit cave, rub your eyes and drink in the clean fresh air. Gardening as you will remember is a very sociable satisfying pastime that has a therapeutic effect on its participants. It need not be expensive but it does require an investment of personal time. Before you know it unwittingly you will have a jolly red face, laugh heartily with your neighbour and find yourself grinning from ear to ear! Whether you are a vegetable grower or a flower border junkie there is a lot to do to get ready for the new gardening year. A spring tidy is long overdue. Branches that fell in the high winds need to be cut up and cleared away. Pull on a pair of shorts, drag a comfy

chair into a sunny corner and drink a cup of tea alfresco!! In the herbaceous border dead flower heads need to be cut back to allow new growth to emerge from the base of plants. Start the weeding. All the rain we have had will have leached out the goodness from the soil and so now find your spade and dig in some good well rotted farmyard manure. It will recondition the soil and feed your plants. Have a good lunch, perhaps a sandwich alfresco! Pull the mower out from the back of the shed, it is time for a first cut on the lawn. When you have cut it stand back and admire your work. Put the grass cuttings onto the compost heap. Using a hammer break down all the broken pots you lost in the high winds and use them for draining your new patio pots. Put bedding plants and good compost on the top of your shopping list and then light the BBQ. Invite the neighbours around for a cool sherbet, a hamburger and a friendly chat, you guessed it ‘ALFRESCO!’ and hope that we can all enjoy more than one day of summer! Happy Gardening!

The Junior Wriggle Valley Players have been performing as a group for the past 14 years and in that time many children have passed through our doors including some you may have seen during the performance of The Wriggle Valley Players pantomime Aladdin – Amy Goodfellow who played Aladdin and Sian Doble who played the Princess Jasmine. We hope that The Junior Wriggle Valley players will be around for many years to come and we plan to perform our version of Aladdin later in the year. To do this we need your help, as although we can achieve a lot with 17 children, it would be lovely to build our numbers up to 25 – so if you have any inspiring actors hidden away at home please call Caroline Hart on 01935 872471. Thanks must also be given to Jane and Megan Fisher and Colin Hart for their help with the group and back stage. Thanks also to Steve Fisher and Will Geeson for the lighting and sound. Also thanks to the members of the Wriggle Valley Players who helped set the hall ready for us after their performance of Aladdin; these include Gary Sturgess, Nick Clegg, and John House. Their help enabled us to be ready to do a technical rehearsal on time, without which we would have been struggling.
