BATCOMBE.....

would like to thank all those folks who helped to tidy the churchyard and decorate the church for our Easter Service, it looked absolutely fabulous and a credit to all involved. There was a good turnout with quite a few children with their bonnets. Easter bunnies were enjoyed with the coffee and the children took part in the egg hunt with gusto. You all know the story of the Elves and the Shoemaker,, well we are having lovely food left in the church, which is obviously attracting vermin, so could we please request that this stops happening, many thanks. This is the last time, this year, for me to advertise the Cream Teas at the Friary on June 22nd from 3pm. Please come and enjoy the special surroundings and wander around the gardens. If you would like to join in the next round of lotto please contact me. Bridget Gordge

ow exciting; we are now entering the summer solstice and Chetnole is looking absolutely magnificent. Lots and lots to look forward to in the village this month starting with our annual duck race on the 8 June so don’t forget to buy your duck before they are all hurled into the hopefully fast-flowing river at the bridge in Mill Lane. A great family event.

Why not treat him to an evening of fun too, at the Chetnole ceilidh on the 20 June? And if he is in need of a leisurely walk the next day on the 21 & 22 June, the village hosts open gardens from 2-5pm. effort that is put into creating such amazing gardens - truly well worth a look and lovely cakes afterwards! Get well wishes go to Sally Slaughter and Rosemary Burden. Anthea Thompson. Many of you will be very sad to hear of the sudden death at home in Sherborne on 14 May. Anthea was, for many years, our church warden and friend of the village. . Sincere condolences to her daughter Penny and son Christopher. Message from Nigel Bray. As you are aware, we have the Chetnole Duck Race on Sunday 8 June. Can I ask if anyone is willing to make a cake for the afternoon refreshments? If so, could they let Jill know on 872233 and to deliver the cake to the Village hall by 1.30pm? Also, the tree felling has started in the Playing Field. The cut up wood will be available to anyone who could use it, for a donation to the Playing Field. If anyone is interested then please let Nigel know on 872233. It's not long until the 67th Annual Chetnole Fete and Flower Show, this year on Saturday 2 August, so you might want to start preparing now if you'd like a chance of winning a prize. Will you have the longest runner bean or a strangely shaped vegetable? Have you planted those prize winning sweet peas? And you'll need time to make a handicraft, such as something new from something old, or paint a picture or take an intriguing photograph. So don't forget to put the date in your diary, and invite your family and friends to come and witness your triumph!Have a great June! We are very sad to see Mike and Jude Lewin and their three children Liam, Jack and Emily are moving on this month to pastures new in Falmouth having sold the 6 6

Chetnole Inn and we wish them all the very best for the future. We would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the new owners to the village and look forward to meeting them soon.

PLEASE BE VIGILANT There has been a recent burglary in the village and in addition to this hawkers have been knocking on doors selling items / offering tree cutting etc. Please be extra careful not to leave cars/doors/windows unlocked when you are not at home and if you are concerned about opening the door ,to quote from the Neighbourhood Watch website, "Not sure? Don't open the door! Most callers are genuine, but watch out for alleged utility workers, council workers, police or repair workers who haven’t made an appointment. If you’re alone and unsure, ask them to come back later when someone else will be there. Have a great June

SOS Wednesday Coffee morning. Your village needs you! Ladies and gentlemen Could you spare three hours on a Wednesday morning very occasionally to help at the busy coffee morning? Our pool of helpers is shrinking which is meaning the faithful few are having to volunteer too often. Newcomers to the village especially welcome and it's a good way to meet everyone! Also - a rota of men is needed to help set up the tables on a Tuesday evening(often followed by a bevvy in the pub afterwards!) Please give it some thought. Sue Morgan

Gordon Foy

Gordon Foy was born 1 Jan 1928 in Wimborne. The family then moved to a farm at Halcombe near Buckland Newton. School at Buckland Newton was where his interest in football started. Gordon played regularly for Dorchester football club but his football career was ended early by him breaking a leg. He left school at 14 and worked on local farms and started doing building work. He married at age 21, the mother of his 6 children, Janet, Alan, Les, Steve, Kevin and Pete. He 8 8

secured a council tenancy farm at Oborne in the early 50's where he ran a Fresian dairy herd and also carried out sub contracting building work. In the mid to late 60's he sold the dairy herd and bought a building plot in Boys Hill, Holnest. There he built a bungalow and kennels there as they were breeding old English sheep dogs at that time. He then took up a government retraining scheme in Gloucester to retrain as a stainless steel welder fabricator and then worked at Wincanton Engineering until retirement. His keen football interest developed into a regular trips with his brother Fred and his two best friends, Paul Horsey and John Gray. They regularly travelled to Southampton to loyally support the football club , Gordon met Doreen Guppy and married her in 1990. They had 23 years of happy marriage. They started married life in Sherborne. Gordon and Doreen were active

members of the caravan club, touring round different parts of the uk and regularly organising caravan rallies. In 1992 they moved to 12 Lambs plot in Chetnole where they were actively involved in village life. They had regular visits from step family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren Gordon loved driving and taking people on tours of the local countryside, pointing out the many buildings he repaired and local beauty spots. He was very proud of the reinstatement of the stain glass window in Alton Pancras church where he fitted all the stained glass himself. After illness, his last six months were spent at the Old Vicarage, Leigh allowing him and Doreen to spend quality time together and having many family visits. The family would like to thank all the Old Vicarage for all the help and kindness they showed Gordon and the family. Eileen Foy

LEIGH.....

A

t the time of writing Sue Fudge and Jane Jeans are resting after their heroic London Moonwalk. I hope to persuade one of them to write a piece about the experience for next months magazine. As usual we are heading for an action packed summer in Leigh - children’s

crafts on 8 June and the Midsummer Nights Dream on the 29 June. In July there is the Candle Auction, Food Fair and inter village games. Please remember that next months magazine is for July and August so do get all the rest of your Leigh summer activities to me in plenty of time so there is no excuse for anyone missing anything!! Philippa Toulson

Leigh’s 2014 Candle Auction Update Things have become clearer since I wrote last month’s article, and our plans for this year’s auction are taking shape. As you can see from the photograph your candle auction trustees are now sufficiently wellequipped with candles to ensure that the auction should be able to continue for at least the next two hundred years. Our first objective, however, is to ensure that this year’s auction will be both a success, and a social occasion. If all goes according to plan, the auction will be held on Wednesday, 9 July in the village hall (details will be confirmed in the July/August edition of the WVM).

In accordance with a long-held tradition of these ancient events, a free glass of wine will be offered on arrival. There will also be a cash bar, and tea and coffee, and, of course, it being a Wednesday, fish and chips can be bought! Before the bidding wars start for the two parcels of land there will be a short talk about candle auctions. Once common, they are now rare. Leigh’s is one of the least known, probably one of the oldest, and possibly the most complicated in terms of the rights attached to it. Therefore, if you want to know more, would like

to share a glass, and, if the fancy takes you, join in the bidding for these ancient rights, please keep your eyes open for next month’s magazine, or contact a trustee for more details (see photograph). Gordon Morris, Chairman, Leigh Candle Auction 873051

St Andrew's Church, Leigh Sadly there has been a delay to the start of our building programme because of problems the builder has experienced in his present project. Hopefully we will see some activity by the end of May/beginning of June. The Bishop of Salisbury has agreed to come on Sunday 5 October to bless our new extension, so it had better be built by then!! There will be a PCC meeting on Thursday 12 June and if you have any questions/comments re:church life, please contact one of the churchwardens before then. Please note the exciting enactment of the last Act of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Sunday 29 June will be in Philip and Sylvia Bryan's garden at 3pm - this is a fund raiser and let's pray for fine weather. If not, Annie Sinnott has kindly offered for it to be held at The Old Vicarage.

When nice Mr Fothergills sends me his plant catalogue I placed it carefully on the shelf and forget about it until the increasingly sunny days once more stir those gardening hormones whereupon, with a glass of red wine, I tick numerous boxes and send a cheque to await the arrival of my new plantings. During this time the weather continues to improve and the plants in the garden (that I haven’t previously killed off) struggle forth with great promise and expectation throwing off their winter slumbers. The day finally arrives and poor Sarah struggles across the tarmac carrying various “open immediately” packages and my new plants arrive - they are duly unpacked and sit on the sink and kitchen worktops in a multitude of containers blinking in the light and looking slightly unsure as to what to expect next. And then it rains. In actual fact every time I plan to plant out the newcomers it rains and we now all just stand there in the kitchen looking forlornly out of the window wondering where the good weather went. So there you are, it’s my fault that it’s raining and I apologise. Hopefully it will be (or was depending when you get the WVM!) a good day for the Yetminster Open Gardens Day on Sunday 1 June and as many as possible of you will be able to see the gardens that are open. Tickets (proceeds go to charity) are available on the doors and in St Andrews Hall and I believe there are more gardens than ever this year so do try to be there. This is hotly followed by the PTFA Community Summer Fair at St Andrew’s CE Primary School, Yetminster on Saturday 7 June which will host numerous stalls and displays and promises to be a super fun event and not to be missed.

The following weekend, Saturday 14 June (it’s a busy month isn’t it!) is the YFA Quiz Night starting at 7.00pm in St Andrews Hall. Bring your own suppers and I’m told that there is a prize for the best dressed table so do let your imaginations run wild. Whilst, unfortunately, I don’t normally intellectually contribute much to the table I’m on, but it’s an entertaining evening and the ever resourceful duo of Harvey & Simon and their gang are excellent quizmasters. Book your table early to avoid disappointment. Proceeds go to local organisations and projects so your support for this is important. Lastly, but not least, make a note in your diary for the 12 July next month as it’s the White Hart’s afternoon “mini bazaar” with traders/craft stalls and a BBQ on the Hart Patio. This will be followed by a Hog Roast in the evening with live music by STORM - a popular local band. Have a good June. David Torrance

Yetminster Fair 50 CLUB The 50 Club was started around 1990 as a means of encouraging support for village activities. Funds raised by the Club are either returned in prize money or distributed as grants to local organisations through the YFA. The fund is registered with WDDC for an annual Licence Fee (currently £15). The Club complies with the requirements of the Gambling Act 2005 and submits an annual financial account to WDDC. The ‘50’ in the Club name relates to the original idea of selling 50 tickets on a monthly basis, although actually there is no limit to the number of tickets that may be sold. They are sold on an annual basis for a total £52 per year (equivalent to £1 per week) per member paid by standing order in £13 quarterly instalments. The Club aims to distribute a minimum of 50% of its income as prize money (therefore the greater the number of tickets sold, the greater the prize money!). Currently a total of £1580 is paid out annually in prizes through: - 8 monthly draws each with £50, £30 and £20 prizes - 4 quarterly draws each with £100, £50, £25 and £20 prizes

Winning tickets are drawn by someone independent of the YFA (currently the Chairman of the Hundred of Yetminster History Society). If you would like to support the 50 Club forms are available from Derek Mott 01935-872123 or contact us at yetminsterfair@aol.com. The YFA is non-profit making and run entirely by voluntary support. Yetminster Jubilee Hall Committee First, we would like to apologise for having to cancel the Victoria Cross presentation. Lt. Col. Mike Martin was admitted to hospital the day before the talk was due to be given. He is now back home and we wish him a speedy recovery. We look forward to rescheduling the event. Later this month on Sunday 29 June we shall be showing the hit film “Grease” in a singalong format. This follows the success last year when we showed “Mamma Mia”. The film starts at 7.30pm and we hope that this will be a popular time. Refreshments will be available. Do come if you can, it will be a lot of fun. Simon Eadon

Team Dobby from Georgie’s, Yetminster have raised the princely sum of £660 for the Yeovil branch of the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society by completing the Weymouth Bay 10K. Well done one and all. 24 24 Copy for DOUBLE ISSUE by 12 JUNE

The Harty Bunch, Yetminster’s Own Skittle Team invites you to a fun Skittles evening to have a go at trying to hit those pesky pins at the Skittle Alley, The White Hart, Yetminster (behind the pub) on Saturday 21 June starting at 8pm. There will be a light buffet and you can meet the current players and throw a few balls, knock down a few pins and show them how it’s done! – all in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere Young or not so young, male or female you are welcome to have a go! We belong to a local friendly league within the Sherborne Area and normally meet and play on a Monday evening and whilst we pride ourselves on being a fun group we do feel that we need some “new blood” So if you are interested in joining, or just want to have a go please drop in on the 21 June, we would love to see you there. Once again the weather decided to do its worst on the night our of Charity Ball on the 26 April, but that didn't stop the evening dresses being dusted off and the shoes being polished. The evening was enjoyed by all and we even had heating!!! The food was fantastic, many thanks to Hannah Wilson and Andrew Hillier for preparing all the food and cooking it to an amazing standard. The auction was hosted by Simon Clothier with his lovely assistant Jess which raised more than we could have ever imagined. Many thanks to everyone who donated their time, services and products that made the auction what it was. Music was provided by the brilliant band Storm, who had everyone up on their feet from the minute they started right up until they finished!!! Overall we have raised just under ÂŁ4000 which is truly amazing and we couldn't have done it without the support from everyone. 50% of this will be donated to Julia's House Children's Hospice in Corfe Mullen and the other 50% will be going towards the revamp of our 'new' outside area at school. The work has

started on this by the Yetminster Scouts, under the watchful eye of their leaders Dawn Perry, Andy Jenkins and Hannah Reeves. The scouts have been doing a fantastic job and already with what they have done has improved the area dramatically! The next event we have is the Community Summer Fair on Saturday 7 June. The event starts with a procession from some of the community groups including the Yetminster Scout Groups, Leigh Guides and the Yetminster Irish dancers at 12noon. At 1.30pm the 'It's a Knockout' competition with a commonwealth games theme, will start. Entry forms for 'It's a Knockout' are available from the school office. Teams of no more than six please. Entry forms need to be returned to the school office by no later than Friday 6 June please. We have a licensed bar, horse and cart rides around the village, face painting, outside stalls and much more. There will be lots to do no matter how young or old. Entry is free. Many thanks to everyone who has supported our events this term an all who continue to support us. Maryann Parkinson, Chair PTFA

The empty hot-boxes from the previous day would need to be taken back to Thornford and the fresh food collected in one trip. Mileage would be paid. We would be very grateful for this support as one of our main priorities at the school is to provide the pupils with freshly cooked food at lunchtime from a reputable source. Thank you from the staff and governing body of St Andrew's CE Primary School. Dawn Perry, School Finance Officer

GENERAL NEWS

On Sunday 8 June Frankham Farm, Ryme Intrinseca will be opening as part of the NGS Festival Weekend. The Festival Weekend was launched last year to encourage people to visit gardens and also to raise awareness of what the NGS is about. Many garden visitors still believe that the garden owners keep all the money raised from opening their gardens for themselves! Here at Frankham admission money goes to the NGS, tea money is donated to Ryme church, and the money raised from private group visits, plant sales, jam and postcard sales is donated to various charities, our main charity each year is the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, to whom we are proud to say over the last three years we have donated over ÂŁ1200. Last year we also donated money to Dorset Wildlife Trust, Yetminster village hall appeal and we are sponsoring two puppies for the Dogs for the Disabled scheme. The NGS itself donates to nursing and caring charities, such as Macmillan Cancer and Marie Curie, last year they donated over two million pounds and over the last ten years 22 million has been donated to their charities of choice. Everyone gives their time, and cakes, free of charge. We have plenty here to look at, three and a half acres of garden, metal structures and quirky sculptures. We are open from 2pm to 5pm, so please come along and support this well worth charity. Andrew Templeman

I thought it time to give our community an update as to what the Yetminster Scout Group have been up to over the past 12 months. We currently have 43 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. As you know, we celebrated last year with our newly refurbished hut, we have enjoyed a much warmer winter for our weekly meetings. Our Beavers Section have been busy, they went to the Panto in Weymouth for their Christmas outing and enjoyed a Fish and Chip Supper on the Promenade, they have also been to Ready to Climb and are looking forward to a District Day Trip to Crealy. Our Cubs had an enjoyable evening at Bowlplex just before Christmas and made use of the new Ready to Climb centre in Yeovil, Stargazing through a powerful telescope, conveying eggs safely down a Zip-Wire together with a two-night Camp PGL in Weymouth over Easter Weekend. Last summer camp the Scouts learnt to surf, cycled down the Tarka trail, completed a night hike, rock pool dipping, did bouldering

and crate stacking, BBQs and camping. Since the summer our Scouts have attended a survival camp making their own shelters, cooking on wood fires and learning survival skills. They have made bird boxes for Beer Mill woods, helped at the Old Vicarage and Hilfield Friary, and working on a major DIY project at St. Andrews for their Partnership Community Award. This term the scouts are kayaking, caving, shooting and archery and for their summer camp they are looking forward to coasteering (walking or swimming along a rocky coast line between high and low tides without using boats, surfboards etc.) sea kayaking, rock climbing, snorkeling for sea horses, hiking and lots more along the Dorset coast. All the Sections are looking forward to being outdoors over the Summer Term after a very wet winter. Without our Sections Volunteers we wouldn’t have our local Scout Group and for this we are always grateful for the time our volunteer leaders give to our group, however, we

are URGENTLY in need of more volunteers. If you would like to help more young people enjoy scouting by becoming an Assistant Leader or Leader of a section while learning new skills and having fun and can give a little time (or a lot) to help improve young lives in your community we would love to hear from you. Alongside the Section Leaders we also have a hard working Committee that supports the Groups. We are in need of new Committee members with effect from September, without a committee we cannot operate Yetminster Scout Group, thus leaving our Community without a Scout Group If you are interested in joining our group in any of the above roles, please email me eastlands12@gmail.com or call me 01935 873379 We are looking forward to another full year of activities and look forward to meeting you at any fundraising events we plan over the coming year. Yetminster Scouts have been busy working for their DIY badge and a part of that was to build nest boxes, which they then put up in Beer Mill Mead. Several of the nest boxes in the SNCI had been damaged and destroyed by Grey Squirrels so replacements were needed. The scouts constructed seven new boxes and under the guiding eye of Dawn Perry, scout leader, and her assistants Andy and Hannah, fifteen scouts set to. As you know some parts of Beer Mill Mead are very wet, which is part of its unique value to have Alder Trees in a wet wood. As might be expected some of the scouts found that their wellies were not as tall as

the water was deep, so more than one pair of boots needed tipping out before they walked back to Yetminster. The summer social day and fund raiser will probably happen on 16 or 17 August. Confirmation will be in the July/August edition of WVM. The event will include a walk, information and explanations about the environment and wildlife on the site, with a barbeque, and Bat detection or a moth trap. We hope to raise funds from this event to pay for bidding at the Candle Auction. If you would like to discuss ideas or know about opportunities to use the site then please contact Kevin Waterfall.

…there’s nowt so

fascinating as Folk …

One day a year – Helping yourself A few years ago I was on holiday in the far north of Scotland, very near to Cape Wrath. It was 23 June, two days after the longest day, and my bed and breakfast landlady told me, in all seriousness, that if I was going out to eat I should make sure that I wrapped up properly as the nights were beginning to draw in! This was in a part of Scotland where there is much more daylight than darkness at that time of year. That part of Scotland was very badly affected by the Highland Clearances of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when wealthy landowners evicted all families living in a particular area, enclosed it and then replaced the people with hundreds of sheep. The affect on the poorer people was, understandably, both dramatic and catastrophic. The enclosures in Dorset at about the same time also had a drastic effect on the common people. They lost their rights to graze the family’s cow or pig on common land and at the same time food became both scarce and expensive. In 1795, in the corn-growing chalk land of North Dorset, there was a ‘housewives revolt’. Women led the way in seizing expensive food and selling it to the poor at prices they considered fair. They passed the money on to the landowners but at nothing like the original asking price. At the time families were expected to live on as little as six or seven shillings a week and the only way they could pay their rent was through Poor Relief. In last May’s Wriggle Valley Magazine I wrote about the Friendly Societies that sprang up in the second half of the eighteenth and the first part of the nineteenth centuries. These Friendly Societies were a vital part of the fabric of society for the rural poor. These were some of the earliest examples of self-help schemes. While you were working you paid money to your local society – very often it was so local as to cater just for your village – and when you were in particular need, through sickness or a death in the family, the Society would help you out. If you look in some of our old churches you will

50 50

often see evidence of bequests in which some of the wealthier members of the local community left money to be held in trust and distributed to the poor, either in the form of money, food or some other item. Maundy Thursday, for example, is the day the monarch distributes Maundy Money to a few handpicked and deserving citizens. At other times and in other places you might receive a loaf or a ‘twopenny starver’ (a bun). In Leigh church you can see an old plaque referring to a charity which presented a red and a blue coat annually to the girl and boy who were chosen by their fellows as the most popular at the village school. In Yetminster, the Boyle’s Educational Charity still functions by distributing income from its property and investments ‘for the social and educational benefit of young people of the three parishes: Yetminster, Leigh and Chetnole’. The charity was set up following a bequest in the will of the English natural philosopher and chemist Sir Robert Boyle, born Jan. 25, 1627, died Dec. 30, 1691, so it has been operating for more than 380 years. Nowadays we benefit from the existence of the welfare state, but we also want to help those around us who are in particular need. There are food banks operating in Sherborne and Yeovil and some local supermarkets are acting as collecting points for tins of food. As little as ten years ago, how many of us would have dreamt that such acts of generosity would have been necessary on our own doorstep? In our church in Leigh we have an Emergency Box. It is there for those who suddenly find themselves in particular need. Their emergency might be an economic one or it might be to do with ill health or lack of transport. You can help yourself to emergency supplies, and, if and when you feel able to do so, you can replace what you have used, and it’s entirely anonymous. So the tradition of community generosity continues, but not just for one day a year, but, potentially, every day. Eddie Upton, Folk South West

NEWS FROM ST ANDREW’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL

Technology teaching improved by grant from Boyle’s Trust When Alan Hill, a representative of the Boyle’s Trust, approached St Andrew’s CE Primary School a year ago proposing we bid for a grant to supply computing and technology hardware, little did we imagine the extent to which this offer would improve our computing and technology provision at school. Boyle’s Trust is a local charitable organisation which is primarily devoted to providing funding to improve the education for Yetminster children with a focus on science. St Andrew’s was given a grant of £5000. With this, we were able to purchase six ipads, six visualisers, two PCs and four laptops. The main purpose of all this this equipment was to impact directly on our pupils’ learning. This has been achieved and Boyle’s Trust have helped enormously, in this era of squeezed budgets.

Indeed, in our recent Ofsted inspection the inspection team said that the equipment is ‘used well’. We were very pleased with this recognition and the

inspectors also recognised the strong links with our local community which made this possible. The ipads have allowed us to improve the

assessment of our children’s work – they can record (in writing and pictures/film) what the children have and help teachers effectively plan the next steps. The visualisers are similar to video cameras – we use these to magnify resources (such as seeds or rocks) and improve children’s visual access. They can also be used to instantly share children’s good work with the whole class on the interactive whiteboards and give rapid feedback. The PCs and laptops have updated older, now obsolete equipment improving our all round technology provision. This could not have been done without the vision and financial support of the Boyle’s Trust. All the children, staff, governors and parents thank you. Paul Miller, Headteacher

Three Valleys Team off to a Flying Start

The Reverend Tony Gilbert and the Right Reverend Nicholas Holtam, Bishop of Salisbury

Eddie Upton introduced the service with a rousing anthem of praise written by a local man in the 19 Century and we were rung into and out of the church on Yetminster's fine peal of six bells. The organ was played by Simon Eadon, who accompanied the lusty singing with great verve and inventiveness. The whole service was a great occasion though not so formal that laughter and enjoyment did not find their place. After the service there was a very convivial party in St Andrew's Hall, with food and drink contributed and shared by all the parishes. Tony Gilbert, who with his wife Nicola and their family is living at Thornford Rectory, will lead the ministry in the new team with the assistance of the Revd Simon Brignall as Team Vicar and a further Team Vicar yet to be appointed; and of the very hard working and gifted retired clergy and the ever helpful and inspiring Brothers of the Friary at Hilfield. Tony was a Chaplain in the RAF, retiring recently in the rank of Wing-Commander. He has considerable experience of working with and directing teams of clergy and we all greatly look forward to having the benefit of his leadership. Frances Moule wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 55

CHURCH NEWS

St Andrew's Church, Yetminster was filled almost to capacity on Thursday evening 8 May for the licensing of the Revd Tony Gilbert as Team Rector (see cover photo) and his institution and induction, good legal terms, in that office. The Three Valleys Team, consisting of the three former Benefices of Gifle Valley, Wriggle Valley and Vale of the White Hart, consists of 16 rural parishes, of which Yetminster is the largest with about 1000, with a total population of about 6000 and covering an astonishing 65 square miles of some of the loveliest countryside in England. The Bishop of Salisbury, the Rt Revd Nicholas Holtam, in his first official visit to Yetminster (until a couple of years ago he was Vicar of St Martin in the Fields) performed the formal act of licensing and preached on the major step which was being taken by Tony Gilbert, his supporting clergy and all the people in these far flung parishes – a major and potentially inspiring step which could bring together in faith all their people. Tony was welcomed by representatives of the three former benefices, other churches and leaders of the community; and then the Archdeacon of Sherborne, the Ven Paul Taylor, went through the traditional acts of induction assisted at each stage by representatives of the 16 parishes – the giving of the vessels for Holy Communion, the Bible for preaching the word, the filling of the font for baptism, the formal handing over of the church keys (all 16 of them!) and the tolling of the bell; and then installed him in his stall. We are an interdenominational club where we study Bible stories, sing and generally have some fun! We accept children from the beginning of the term they are six years old. Our Open Afternoon this term is on Wednesday 2 July when we will be saying goodbye to those of our children who are leaving and The Revd Roy Catchpole has kindly agreed to come and give a short address - all are very welcome to join us that afternoon from 3pm. I would also be grateful if there is anyone who feels that would like to come and help teach one of the classes. Sadly over the past few years some of our teachers have had to retire and it would be great to have some new young blood! Leigh Weather Watch April 2014 Wanton with long delay the gay spring leaping cometh, The blackthorn starreth now her bough upon the eve of May Robert Bridges (Poet Laureate 1913)

And our Blackthorn hedge certainly promises a vintage year for Sloe Gin! Rainfall A long dry spell early in the month helped us to forget earlier flooding, but April still had only 13 rain-free days (instead of 16) and the total amount was well above normal. The first 4 months of 2014 have already been wetter than the first 8 months of a ‘normal’ year. Temperatures April temperatures averaged 10.3C/51F - much higher than the usual 6.8C/44F). The warmest day of the month (and the year so far) was the 11th, with 20.1C/68F. There was only one night with frost (instead of seven) and the lowest temperature April 2014

was -1.8C/29F on the 18th. This was far less chilling less than April’s usual lowest temperature (-5.3.C/23F). Sunshine April was much duller than usual. There were five sun-free days (instead of three). The month has 416 daylight hours, but sunshine was 21% below average, with only 104 instead of 131. Pressure As in March, pressure was higher than usual, averaging 1021mb instead of 1018. It fell to to 1008mb on the 25th, then to 1004mb next day, bringing a combined total of 21mm (almost 1 inch) of rain - so two days gave one third of the total for the whole month. Winds The windiest day was the 25th, with gusts of 31mph, but this was below April’s usual peak speed of 34mph. Philip Bryan

...gone gardening How to Achieve a White Garden A white garden is mesmerizing, sophisticated and elegant and more simply achieved than one would suspect. It is I suppose best suited to an area where there is a little partial shade where the blooms can be appreciated in the dappled light. In these conditions the flowers will smile back at you, take longer to come to fruition and take longer to go. In bright sun blooms develop fast and are over more quickly. Within the border a plants beauty stems not just from the flower but the leaves for their colour, texture and architectural value, the developing buds and even the seeds once the petals drop can be attractive. Silver looks ghostly, whites shine, greys harmonise and lime lights. As I write fragrant Lily of the Valley feature strongly in the front border along with strong unfurling alien-like stems of Mattuechia strutiopteris fern. A Philadelphus cor. Aurea is just budding up and white Zantedeschia lilies catch their breath waiting for a first flush of bloom. Variegated colour from ordinary Euonymus Emerald Gaiety reflects back as does white periwinkle whose adventurous stems creep at will producing small flowers that resemble stars in the gloom. Back of border use a big climber. Hydrangea petiolaris takes a while to grow and sends out tendrils which cling to walls and

structures. When established this is a striking plant with lacy mob cap panicles that are more interesting than the flowers themselves. Mid and front border use white Phlox pan Tiara, Lady’s mantle, Penstemon Snowstorm, Crambe Cordifolia, Papaver Perry’s white, Geranium sang. Alba, Anenome Honorine Jobert, Cosmos and Nicotiana. Grow plants in pots ready to take position when other plants fade, consider Agapanthus Arctic Star, Hosta Minute Man and Lilium Regale. Along part of a country fence a thornless blackberry produces whorls of flowers studded on strong leafy stems of green, more enjoyable than the fruit. If you are lucky enough to have a blooming white apple tree run a Rosa Rambling Rector through it. In pots around the terrace old fashioned non-stop begonias white or rose and white look heavenly along with a variegated cordyline and some trailing white lobelia or a few strands of variegated ivy. News from Dorset County Council Trading Standards Service Your Shopping Online Rights are Changing Are you aware that your rights are changing when shopping online, by telephone or mail order? Currently, as you may be aware, you have seven days to cancel an order which has been made for most goods or services by ‘distance’, such as when you ordering online, by telephone, or by mail order. You have the right to cancel for ANY reason, including simply changing your mind and returning the goods for a FULL refund, although you may have to pay for the return postage costs if that was specified in the terms of the contract when you placed your order. From the 13 June 2014, the law is changing. From this date you will have 14 days to change your mind and cancel the contract. Obviously, there are exceptions to this rule and your cancellation rights do not apply to the following: ● prescribed medicines ● taxis ● magazine subscriptions ● auctions

● CDs, DVDs or software if you've broken the seal on the wrapping ● perishable and other items that deteriorate rapidly such as food and flowers ● tailor-made or personalised goods ● underwear and earrings There are also some services contracts you can’t cancel simply because you change your mind, including: ● contracts for transport and some leisure services to be provided on a specific date eg hotel bookings, flights, car hire, concert and other event tickets ● a tradesman coming for emergency repairs A new addition to the legislation is that if you have devalued the goods by handling them more than you would be able to in a shop, then the seller will now be able to reduce the amount that they refund you by the difference in value. Of course, if you are returning the product because it is faulty then a reduction would not apply. If you are ever unsure of your rights regarding goods or services, then call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 040506. or look at www.adviceguide.org.uk

Yetminster & Ryme Garden Art and Craft Society Preparing for the Show bench For those of us who were hoping to hear some useful tips about what the judges look for when assessing the quality of the entries of home made preserves and baking at our Summer Show, the talk given by Josephine Osment on ‘Preparing for the Show bench’ was just the job. Josephine has been judging local village shows for over forty years (including coming to The Yetminster Summer Show in 1974) and is still regularly called upon for her keen eye and sharp palette as she sniffs and tastes her way through endless jars of jams, jellies and pickles - and to my mind the most enviable task of all: tasting slices of cake, bread, pies and tarts. In addition to her sound list of dos and don’ts, she strongly recommends steering clear of modern recipes and swears by her ancient and battered copy of the Good Housekeeping Cookery Book whose advice first reached our kitchens in 1948 – as far as she is concerned nothing beats the traditional recipes. So having listened to her talk, I can now confidently tell you that producing a winning entry is all about using the correct jars and tops and the best ingredients and planning how far in advance you do your cooking and how much you mix or stir or pat, and most important of all, getting the flavour and consistency just right. I wish you the best of luck in August.

Yetminster & Ryme Garden Art & Craft Society

SUMMER SHOW Saturday 16 August Plant Sale: A special thank you to David Fogden for providing the venue for our plant sale in May, to Penny Gould for organising it and to everyone who turned out to support it. We raised over £400, the sun shone and it turned into a very lively, sociable morning. Open Gardens: by the time you read this I hope you will have enjoyed the Yetminster and Ryme Open Gardens day. Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to make this happen. Looking ahead: In June we have our coach outing to the stunning Bennetts Water Garden in Weymouth, home to the international and national collection of water lilies. On 7 June we will be taking a stand at the PTFA’s school fete. Do come along and see us if you are there. Summer Show: From the beginning of July Schedules and Applications Forms will be available from the Oak House Stores and The Old School Gallery. Pandy Brown, Society Secretary

Chetnole and Leigh Garden Club Our speaker in May was Bob Hendley, who has 40 years experience in breeding, growing and showing dahlias. So as a grower myself I listened with keen attention to the ideas of a noted expert.

74 74

Bob has dedicated his life to these magnificent plants. At one time he was growing a 100,000 plants a year largely from cuttings. There are now around 60,000 varieties registered with the RHS with new

discoveries every week. With every colour except blue and with blooms ranging in size from a 10p piece to 14inches, fortunately dahlias are happy with most soils and positions. Dahlias can be grown from tubers often trimmed to look like a chicken leg, cuttings, the preferred way, and even seeds, all of which are capable of flowering the first year. He explained that flowers grown from tubers get smaller over the years, whilst those grown from cuttings will revert to the original size and type. Earwigs and slugs find young dahlias very tasty and even we humans can enjoy the petals particularly of the paler varieties. Bob told us how to get rid of the pests and the finer points of cultivation. They flower from mid July until the first frost, but then they should be left in the ground for three weeks to allow the water content to diminish. He then showed us a film describing the yearly

cycle of these beautiful plants, a moving example of his devotion to his life’s work. On the table behind his projector were several boxes of plants brought from his garden in Child Okeford and at the end most people made a beeline to obtain a few for their garden. I was fortunate enough to buy four, which I hope will be growing well by the time of the Club Garden Party in July. Michael Morrell

Following an earlier postponement because of the bad weather, the Chuckers start of season BBQ was held on 4 May, a warm bright day with plenty of sun. It was good turnout, with 24 members attending. The burgers and hotdogs, grilled to perfection by the Club Chairman and Treasurer, were as succulent as ever and the trifles and tiramisus prepared by some of the lady members were superb! It was also an opportunity to try the new surface of the boules terrain. The previous surface had become very worn and needed repair and with the help of a number of Club members a layer of Cotswold path gravel had been added during the previous couple of weeks. (Many thanks to Simon James for assisting the Club by using his tractor to move gravel from the playing field entrance to the boules area.) Playing techniques will have to be adapted

Wriggle Valley Women’s Group On Tuesday 18 April Bob Eccleshall, chair of the Friends of the Rendezvous, gave us an informative and interesting talk about the support and guidance offered to local young people at the youth resource centre in the crypt of Cheap Street Church, Sherborne. The Rendezvous, a charity run by Trustees, started from small beginnings around 1998. Initially held in the front room of a local house, where a concerned local resident offered informal assistance to young people in some kind of need, the centre has developed substantially in its present location. The crypt provides space for meetings and groups, a refreshment bar, kitchens, music studio, computer area and other facilities. We heard about the variety of services and opportunities on offer to young people from Sherborne and the surrounding areas, including the Wriggle Valley. Professional inhouse and visiting staff, plus volunteers, offer basic skills and vocational training, music lessons, cookery classes, counselling sessions with drug and alcohol workers, a young parents’ group, and individual advice on problems including housing and benefits issues. The centre currently houses a Job Club, run by qualified and experienced volunteers, available to people of all ages who would like support in seeking work, preparing CVs, interview coaching etc. In addition to their

work at Cheap Street Church, The Rendezvous took over the management of Oborne House, Magna Housing’s accommodation in Sherborne for homeless single young people in January 2014 Bob told us of the need to continually seek new funding from various local and national grant making bodies, to cover increasing financial outgoings including the salaries of a centre manager/youth workers. Annual costs run at about £90,000 of which only about 6% comes from statutory bodies. The Rendezvous holds coffee mornings every week for the general public on Tuesdays and Fridays, 10.00 to 12.00 noon when the centre is open to visitors. More information about funding-raising or becoming a Friend is available from Bob via: reccleshall@therendezvous.or.uk Our next meeting will be on 17 June at 7.00pm when we will be going for a “Walk around Bradford Abbas” led by Tony White. We meet at Bradford Abbas church, and for those who prefer not to walk, an exhibition is being provided inside by the History Society which the walkers can also visit on their return. Refreshments will be available. The cost of the exhibition/refreshments will be £3.00. Guests are welcome to join us. If you want to know more contact Ann Flew 873660 or Jenny Shepperd 873469. Yetminster Short Mat Bowls Club Saturday 7 June at Yetminster CE Primary school is the PTFA Community Fair Day. The Short Mat Bowls club will be there, showing what Bowling is all about and inviting you to come and try out this sport. BUT you are welcome any Wednesday evening or Thursday afternoon to come along to St. Andrews Hall Yetminster and join us for a cup of tea and a chat. The club is now entering its summer season when a few of us will be playing competitions around the Yeovil area.
