The eclipse over the Wriggle Valley, what an exciting time by Rob Hardy
Editor’s musings… Haven’t we been lucky with the weather over Easter and the last few weeks; we are now surrounded by spring flowers: primroses followed by celandine, bluebells and even early purple orchids. What an excitement was the eclipse! Having been somewhat ambivalent about all the hype surrounding it, I was actually stunned by the glimpses of “bitten” sun between the eerie cloud and some of our got some super photos - see Rob’s above. There are a plethora of garden shows and events for you to get your flowers and produce ready for later in the summer; hopefully your green fingers are functioning successfully. This month there is the YETMINSTER FUN RUN amongst other sporting activities in which to participate or if not then to sponsor - I am always impressed how generous the Wriggle Valley in its support of local charitable events. In addition the TREACLE EATER CLOG DANCERS are visiting both pubs (see diary) and there is an ANIMALS, GREAT & SMALL POETRY & PROSE EVENING on 22 May as well as other exciting events. Enjoy the launch into summer and keep taking photos of all your events to send in to us to include in future magazines. V W M The Wriggle Magazine is FREE to you but readers are invited to make voluntary donations towards the cost of production. These should be forwarded to the Treasurer at Mallows House, Church Street, Yetminster, DT9 6LG. Cheques can be made payable to Wriggle Valley Magazine. Thank you for your continued support

big thank you to everyone who helped to make the Easter Sunday service so special, Iris and Robin for their lovely Easter garden, the floral arrangers and the working party for giving the church its annual clean. The children really enjoyed the Easter egg hunt organised by Andrew in his garden after the service with adults having cake and coffee, thank you to the Grahams for their hospitality. The Jumble sale held in April was a great social get together with grateful thanks to Carol and her family for all their efforts. It was repaid with a profit of approx. £450 which is gone to help upkeep the church. 10 May is the date for our JOINT ROGATION SERVICE, walk and lunch with our friends at Hilfield. Please join us at 11am at Paul and Carol Attwell's New Court Farm (on the Friary road). We will be walking around the village finally ending up at the Algar’s barn where lunch will be provided. The children are invited to bring anything that makes a noise to accompany our hymns on our journey. Our Cream Teas will take place on Sunday 21 June at the Friary.

hetnole says “ ” to two of the nicest people you could wish to meet as David and Sheila Gough move to Sherborne after a long time as village residents at Tamarisk. They really are special people and we wish them all the very best in their new home and look forward to bumping into them in town. You can read their note to the village in this issue. We of course welcome the Shauna Reeves and her mother who have become our latest residents and hope to meet you very soon and Alan and Jane Chilton who have spent some months renovating the Manor House, Melbury Bubb. Edith Yeatman’s daughter Tess and son Rodney have provided us with their late mother’s story and a great picture of her in her later years. We are always very grateful to those who are still grieving but manage to send in such lovely and interesting pieces about their loved ones and this is no exception - thank you. Good luck to the crazy Fudge gang who are once again doing a mad cycle for charity - you are all brilliant and must be extremely fit too! SOMETIMES A MARATHON JUST ISN’T FAR ENOUGH! To start, I wanted to thank, the team at Hartlepool Hospice and the team at Leukaemia Research for the fantastic work they have done and continue to do On 4 October 2014, my mum lost her 27 month fight against cancer and the great team at Hartlepool hospice helped to cushion the blow, they made her last few days comfortable and they were there for the whole family. This blow came just three and a half years after my wife, Sarah lost her brother Tom Broadway from Bubbdown Farm, Melbury Bubb after he fought bravely for just seven months before losing his fight against Leukaemia. Lofty, as he was Tom “Lofty” Broadway known by his friends, was just 27 years old. For me the only way to truly say thank you is by doing something in
return. So on the 30 and 31 May I will be raising money by taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival. I start on Saturday morning with a 10Km run and then roughly two hours later, with the support of my wife, we will run the 5km. On Sunday I will then set off for the marathon. In total completing 35 miles across the two days. My mum and Tom showed such bravery in the face of challenge, sadly they are not here, I am and I hope to give something back, by the end my pain may be great but I will recover, if only they had been so fortunate. Doing it for Mum & Tom. Follow my progress and training on https://www.justgiving.com/TeamGeldard/ or you can text with your donation TGMT82£1 to 70070. If we can get everyone who reads this to text just £1 we will be very happy, you are welcome to text more if you feel able.
CHURCH COTTAGE, CHETNOLE HAS A NEW RESIDENT- FROM CYPRUS!
I thought I would introduce you to little Bella, I am in serious risk of becoming a puppy bore. She is a delight and we will no doubt meet some of you as the summer unfolds. She has come from Cyprus Saving Pound Dogs Cyprus [SPDC] which is made up of a group of volunteers trying to save dogs that have ended up in various local dog pounds. In Cyprus, the attitude towards animals, particularly canines, can be very hostile. Dogs are subject to neglectful acts such as poisoning, being shot at, abandoned, starved and beaten. Her back story: one of a litter of five pups dumped outside the pound -of which three died. Linda Carroll wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk

EDITH MARY YEATMAN: A LADY OF DORSET Edith, (Ede), was born in Dorset, lived all her life in Dorset and passed away in her beloved county. A real country woman, who loved the land. Born at Elm Tree Farm Holwell to Ethel and Jim Hole, the twin sister of George and sister to younger brother Norman, Edith aged seven moved to Ashcombe farm, Alweston. Edith left school at 14 to work on the farm. Farm life was varied and often hard work but she soon was involved with country life, becoming a trend setter with the wearing of trousers and shorts when working. She always said that life was enjoyable with what today, seem simple pleasures. In 1945 she married Jack Yeatman, moved to Hazel Farm on the Ilchester estates at Melbury Sampford and worked in the family business alongside Jack’s brother Tom and sisters May and Cis. Rodney and Tess were born here. Despite the hard work (no electrical appliances until 1957) the days at Hazel Farm were filled with fun and laughter. Edith was always welcoming.
Jack and Ede moved to Chetnole in 1978, converting a cowshed into their retirement home Stonegarth. Sadly Jack passed away in 1982. Edith enjoyed being actively involved in her local community. Firstly with Jack, through The Discussion Club, Melstock Barbeque Club and farming activities and after his death becoming a parish Councillor and continuing in the WI, (always a big part in her life, first at Evershot and later in Chetnole and Leigh). All this she did with interest and enthusiasm. A creative lady, she loved to paint, take photos, tend her garden, play her Hammond organ and travel. With Jack she caravanned, visiting the Lake District, Wales and even Sweden in 1971, very adventurous at that time! Visits to the continent followed with family and friends. After a stroke in 1999 Ede had to take life more slowly and lived quietly supported by the family until she moved into The Old Vicarage Residential Home in 2013 where she was lovingly cared for until she passed away very peacefully just after her 93rd birthday. Edith will be fondly remembered by her family and friends.
FAREWELL TO CHETNOLE After nearly thirty five years in the lovely village of Chetnole we have with much regret to leave having to downsize etc. We are now firmly ensconced in the upper reaches of Sherborne; near to those essential establishments so dear to many i.e. Indian and Chinese Take Aways, hairdresser and tattoo parlour. To our many friends in Chetnole and the surrounding area we are only saying au revoir not goodbye and to remind all that we have the coffee pot ready for those who call at Jasmine House, Wootton Grove! Finally, our grateful thanks to all our friends and neighbours who have offered and given help in the move and in the past. Be seeing you! THEMED EVENING Saturday 24 October A date for your diary - the next ‘themed evening’ will be held in the Village Hall on 24 October. There will be more information in future editions of the magazine. NEW NEIGHBOUR We welcome a new face to the village. John Damon has recently moved to Hermitage, from Colehill near Wimborne, and brings with him Holly a black labrador. John grew up in Bradford Abbas and Thornford, and seven years ago bought some woodland near Middlemarsh, so he is already familiar with this area. He is now retired, having worked as an electrical engineer and project manager for SSE. His main hobby is Family History, and he is on the executive committee of the Somerset and Dorset Family History society. His other main interest is Land Rovers. We hope that John will enjoy life in Hermitage, and we look forward to seeing him at some of the village activities.

ST ANDREW’S CHURCH, LEIGH We must thank Revd Tony Durkin for the wonderful services he presided over at Easter and didn't the church look beautiful - thank you to Jackie Jolliffe and her team for all their hard work. Our April coffee morning went well and we were able to give a contribution towards the Magna Carta trip for St Andrew's CE Primary School, Yetminster. Our next coffee morning is on Tuesday 5 May from 10.30am - 12.00. We are hoping to be able to give a contribution towards the cost of the Leigh tapestry and hopefully it will be on display in the church that morning, so do come along and join us for some coffee and cakes! The Lent lunch in March, together with the previous coffee morning, raised just over £250 for Save The Children - so thank you so much for all those who supported us and also made all the delicious soups. There seem to have been so many world disasters recently that I am sure our money will be put to good use. Please do come to the church on Friday 22 May at 7.30pm (further details in the magazine) for an evening of POETRY, PROSE AND SONG entitled "All Creatures Great and Small". There will be a buffet supper provided. Anne Reason and Eddie Upton Churchwardens BIBLE STUDY A group of us are meeting to study a York course called "Songs of Praise in the New Testament" - we listen to several speakers on a CD including the Archbishop of Canterbury, David Suchet and several others and then try and answer a few questions! first one is on Monday 4 May at 7.45pm. For further information please phone Anne Reason on 873726.
COUNCIL MATTERS We are looking for residents of Leigh to help the village by becoming a Parish Councillor. If you are interested and wish to discuss this further, please contact Sandra Scutt on 01935 873189. THE OLD VICARAGE CARE HOME Another busy month has passed at the Old Vicarage. We had a lovely morning of Celtic music played on the harp in celebration of both St. David’s and St. Patrick’s day. Jasmine the donkey did individual room visits recently and luckily no mop or bucket was needed! Melanie, who owns 22 donkeys, had nine churches to visit on Palm Sunday! Our Push pong sessions are going from strength to strength and we are very grateful of the support provided by Graham and his team from Leigh table tennis club. Ed and Philippa of Folk South West entertained us with some wonderful tales and songs recently. We wish them all the very best for their wedding in May. Easter bonnets, flowers, egg hunts and an Easter garden all provided for a fun Easter holiday, with the highlight being a visit from some chicks hatched in an incubator on my kitchen table! Easter Monday also saw a visit by an Easter lamb which again provided a great morning especially to those who told me they had never been that close to a lamb before! Thank you all for supporting our recent Coffee Morning in aid of cancer research, amount raised to follow. Don’t forget to join us for our . We are planning many displays of old farm equipment, including a 1940’s milking bale, sheep farming display, plus kitchenalia and washing day equipment. LEIGH CANDLE AUCTION 2015 Those of you who attended last year’s combined auction and fish and chip “do” will know that Leigh’s candle auction is one of only a very few left in the country. Once commonly used to ensure a measure of fairness and chance in matters of trade, Leigh’s has always been associated with the rather complicated arrangements associated with the village’s parish lands (see Eddie Upton’s article on page 50. It still is. This year, as last, not only will the auction be held, but the opportunity will also be taken to celebrate the auction’s longevity and increasingly historic significance – ie a bit of a party! So, please, do come along, enjoy yourselves, and, if you wish, put in a bid. Gordon Morris, Chairman, Leigh Parish Lands Trust, Tel. 873051

YETMINSTER.....
was fortunate, a couple of weekends ago, to be invited to Sunday Lunch and must admit it was a rather splendid affair with real food (living on your own you tend to forget what this tastes like!) and ever full glasses of wine. Anyway the chat around the table was all about the village and it was heartening to see that the village spirit is indeed alive and well - interestingly it appears that your Yetrep should attend the Church services to learn what is really going on in the area! Talking about village spirit, I have had a plea for people to remove their flyers from lampposts and boards once the event being advertised is over - I believe it's called fly posting but we won't go there! hopefully my "Project Yetminster" scheme to provide two Community notice boards will get off the ground soon and these will help with the dissemination of information. There is the BLUES BAND CONCERT in the Jubilee Hall at 7.30pm on Friday 1 May and the Gardening Club is off to Hestercombe on Tuesday 12 May. The History Club is visiting Sherborne Steam and Water Wheel Centre on the 13 May I was involved in the early days when they were getting approval for this and it's good to see that the project has come to fruition - if you like steam and "industrial" things then this is the place for you! The PTFA have their FUN RUN on Sunday 10 May although, unfortunately, I shall be away! The WVM's Graham Plaice is running and is seeking sponsorship towards Church Funds and would welcome your shiny and folding stuff. There is also the official launch of the PARISH PLAN at 7.30pm on Monday 18 May in the Yetminster Jubilee Hall. I popped into the Gallery for a coffee and was told the sad news about Rob (Reg) Boyce. He was always ready to help people and was a great supporter of the

MARK AT THE ARK VILLAGE We have had a change (nothing drastic!) and we are now closed on Mondays instead of Wednesdays but our opening hours of 9am to 5pm remain the same for Tuesday to Saturday. This means that the Vintage Buffet Tea room is now open on Wednesday and Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday 10am to 1.30pm - we are looking forward to the spring so we can use our own rhubarb for the lovely homemade rhubarb & custard cake which is much sought-after in these parts! Our new market stalls are now up and running with great results with lots more treasures to peruse and buy including old pine chests of drawers, bookcases and storage boxes. Also some new shop owners moved into one of our spare units selling some nice painted furniture and handmade craft items, including cards, all of which are worth having a look at. We are always looking for furniture so
HAPPENINGS AT THE HART The quiz on Saturday 28 March was a big success with all our tables taken and we raised ÂŁ 91.00 for the " Moon Walk " in aid of Breast Cancer. It is nice to see such fantastic support for these events and thank you for making this one another night to remember. The previous Sunday we had a "precelebration " with our regulars - those who have put up with us for nearly 20 years (the actual date is 12 April). To mark the occasion we had vintage champagne, prosecco, malt Whiskys and a selection of fine French cheeses and salami. Our special thanks to Peter, Tony and Nikki for all the

food they provided - it was such an enjoyable lunchtime we propose to repeat the idea on the last Sunday of each month - with the next one being "Tapas" themed so do please make a note in your diaries. The Treacle Eater Clog are back by popular demand on the evening of Monday 18 May and will be dancing outside the Hart at 8.00pm. They are great fun so do drop by and be entertained. We are hoping to arrange an "American" day on either the 11 or 18 July. We will firm up arrangement nearer the time so keep your eyes open for details but we hope to have a Country Western Band in the afternoon, Bar B Q, American " Muscle cars" and a few more things to keep you entertained. Well there have been some changes at the Association and Barbara Driver has taken on the role of Secretary with Karen Case becoming our Treasurer. Unable to keep my arm down I have volunteered to be the Chairman so hopefully an old dog can learn new tricks! My first "official" duty is to welcome Elaine Pennington to the Committee which brings our total membership to ten people. Ideally we still need two more people so do please let us know if you are interested in joining or pop along to our regular 7.30pm meeting at the White Hart on the last Thursday of the month Barbara has already outlined, in her article in February, some of the issues that we need to address (date of the event, capacity, type of entertainment etc.) and we will, hopefully, be resolving these over the next months. A suggestion is that the Association nominate the various organisations and activities it wants to support before the Fair so that people can see what they are being asked to contribute to. A further idea is for the Association to operate a hot food stall itself although we realise that we will be relying heavily on the good will of one of our Committee members to do this. As you know we have investigated the potential of using the sports field as a venue. However, unfortunately, it is evident that there are difficulties with this and

realistically we feel that the Fair will have to evolve in some other way. Whilst we are concerned that it will mean a gap of two years (and I know it's not a good start to my Chairmanship!) we feel that it is unrealistic now to try to organise a Fair for this year. However we are confident that with our new found enthusiasm that we will be able to hold a revitalised Fair in 2016 so do look out for updates in the WVM. Notwithstanding the above we have asked the Yetminster Community Project to organise our traditional YFA Quiz and this will take place in July so again "watch this space". Obviously you may have your own views and ideas as to how the Fair should evolve and we would welcome them. David Torrance Chairman, Yetminster Fair Association If you have ideas for the Fair or how we can raise money for local groups and projects, or if you would like to volunteer to help the Association please contact us through the WVM/ Community mailbox in the entrance to Georgies and the Old School Gallery or email us at: yetminsterfair@aol.com Just a short note this month. The sunlight streaming is the through gallery windows but our hearts are sadden with the loss of our dear friend Rob (Reg) Boyce. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends - his chair in the corner of the Gallery will always be special and we will miss our breakfast chats and to just having him around.

opportunity YETMINSTER AND RYME SUMMER SHOW to
Preparations for the Yetminster and Ryme Summer Show are now well under way. The Show, which will take place on Saturday 15 August in the Yetminster Jubilee Hall, is organised by the Yetminster & Ryme Garden, Arts & Crafts Society on behalf of the whole community and this is reflected in the entries, and winners, many of whom are not members of the society. Last year the show was a huge success, with record numbers of both entries and visitors. We are hoping to top this performance this year and have put together a revised schedule which we think will tempt some newcomers to try their hands. 8In particular we are launching a Group Exhibit in the Craft Section. This should be an item, or collection of small items - any theme is possible - and the group must consist of four or more people. We think there are lots of groups within our villages who may be prepared to take up this exciting challenge. 8'Something New from Something Old' will give our creative craft specialists the
PARISH PLAN UPDATE I am pleased to confirm that the Yetminster & Ryme Intrinseca Parish Council approved the Parish Plan and accompanying Statements of Commitment at their meeting on Wednesday 18 March. This is a major initiative for the village and provides a framework to enable the Council to meet the expectations of the community. It is proposed to have a "formal" launch at the Jubilee Hall at 7.30pm on the evening on Monday 18 May to which you are all invited so do please look out for flyers etc. about this and do check the Parish Website (and in particular the Parish Plan pages) for information. If you haven't already looked at
do some blue skies thinking. 8In the bakery section, which was particularly popular last year, we have some new categories with cheese straws and sausage rolls making any entry on the savoury side and a treacle tart and a vegetable cake, for instance carrot or courgette, on the sweet side. 8For floral artists there are some challenging but interesting themes including 'a Bit of Bling' and Reflections' and the under '8s' will find plenty of inspiration in a 'Box or Book of Treasures'. 8We do want as many people to be involved as possible. An early peep at the full schedule, which contains all rules and conditions, can be found at the Old School Gallery and we are intending to deliver a schedule to every home in May. Please make sure you have read the schedule thoroughly before you start work. It costs nothing to take part and it is lots of fun! Pearl Gatehouse, Show Secretary
the website or used the Forum you can do so at http://yetminsterparishes.gov.uk so do please give it a try. The Parish Plan will be made available to the community and it is proposed to provide a copy of the Statements of Commitment to every householder. The working group have recommended that the Council review its implementation of the plan at regular intervals and report on progress. As Chairman of the working group I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the team for their effort and commitment, and all those who have contributed to its work over the last year. GENERAL EVENTS GENERAL NEWS
It is that time of year when planning starts for the Wriggle Valley Players annual pantomime and it is I whom has been entrusted with the responsibility to produce next year’s show. After last year’s successful production of Wizard of Oz, the Wriggle Valley Players will attempt Simon Rayner Davis’ new version of the wellknown classic tale DICK WHITTINGTON, or is that “Whattington” as Dick is commonly referred to throughout. Before I spill anymore beans about next year’s production I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Wriggle Valley Players to invite you to our FAMILY MURDER MYSTERY TRAIL & AFTERNOON TEA to be hosted at the Old School Gallery, Yetminster on Saturday 6 June between 10am – 4pm. Collect The Family Murder Mystery Trail for £2 from the Old School Gallery
between 10am – 2pm and let it guide you around the lovely village of Yetminster. By solving the fiendish clues we have set on the Trail will you be able to work out “who dunn it” and be in with a chance of winning a prize? It is estimated the trail will take approximately two hours. Throughout the duration of the day the Wriggle Valley Players and the Old School Gallery will be serving Tea or Coffee with a slice of homemade cake and scones for £6 a couple. So even if you cannot join us for
the trail, why not pop down for delicious Afternoon Tea, a browse around the stalls and enjoy the light entertainment on offer. Now that I have taken up the allotted space, please look in next month’s Wriggle Valley Magazine to find out about next year’s show and more importantly those key dates for your diary. So, on behalf of the Wriggle Valley Players I hope to see you on Saturday 6 June for our Family Murder Mystery Trail and Afternoon Tea.

GENERAL EVENTS GENERAL NEWS
Messy Church got off to an enthusiastic vibrant start under the new leadership of Gemma Perrin and Amy Goodfellow. The Messy Church Team all provided a wonderful variation of creative activities allowing young people and their families to explore the true meaning of Easter and Palm Sunday. The activities ranged from decorating yummy biscuits, making fun hand palm leaves, woolly crosses, fluffy donkey ears, elaborate banners and one of the favourites, transforming a cardboard box with colourful paint, stickers and material to be used as part of an archway into Jerusalem. There was also a games table which proved very popular with games such as Pin the Tail on the Donkey, UNO Stacko, Jumping Frogs, puzzles and many more. There was also a ‘cosy’ corner full of toys and books where children could take a little time to sit and enjoy their surroundings, read or play. The school hall of St Andrew’s came alive with the excitement of Easter and busy little creative hands at work. After an active hour we all gathered together for a short Easter presentation from the perspective of Dave the Donkey and his Grandpa. This was concluded by inviting the children to contribute their thoughts and link the items they had made to help them understand their symbolism. We continued to celebrate by singing two lively, joyful songs which all were able to join in using percussion instruments and the banners made earlier in the afternoon. It was great to see so many happy faces,
not only the children, but all family members, friends and volunteers. There was an opportunity to write a prayer and place it in an anonymous prayer box. These were read out at the end of our celebration time. It was a beautiful way to finish. We were then fortunate enough to enjoy a delicious meal kindly prepared by Messy Church volunteers. The day was a huge success not only due to the work of the Messy Church Volunteers, but all the families who joined us for this occasion. It was a privilege to be part of this day and we hope to continue to make the future of Messy Church an exciting and welcoming experience. We sincerely hope to see some familiar and new faces joining us at the next Messy Church on Sunday 31 May. All are very welcome.

The children enjoyed another fantastic disco on the 27 March. There was an Easter bonnet competition for Acorn and KS1 and KS2; well done to Amber H in Holly class and Niamh in Ash Class. Glow sticks were in abundance, many thanks to Mrs Halford for manning this stall, tattoos which were run by parents and carers of Acorn Class, biscuit decorating manned by Becky Elford and Nicky Jenkins, the most popular sweet stall run by Anna M, Carol A and Jenny E and thanks to Jade L and Kim G for manning the refreshments and ice lollies. Also a big thank you to Daryn Elford and Tony Suctliffe for DJing, Angela Hole for being on the door and Ali and Jo for running the lucky dip. I hope I haven't missed anyone out!! If I have I am sorry and thank you!! Well done to Lucy J and Alice J for winning the name the school chickens competition which were Sandra and Olivia and many thanks to Alex Halsey for her help with this stall. Currently it looks as though the disco raised over ÂŁ300 which is an incredible amount!! Our first monthly cake raffle saw Jess, Oscar and Reuben inning an Easter cake, which was lovingly made by Vanessa Smith, many thanks to everyone who brought a ticket! There will be no raffle in April, but please buy a ticket for the May draw! Tickets are 50p each and these are available from either the school office or directly from me! The PTFA have also donated ÂŁ200 towards the Paul Miller Memorial Fund. Work started

PARNHAM VOICES A CAPELLA CONCERT AT ST ANDREW’S CHURCH, YETMINSTER A fundraising concert was hosted in St Andrews Church on Saturday 28 March. The concert was called “Palestrina to Porter”, which was a musical journey of sacred and secular music under the direction of Nigel Edwards. The evening was an unqualified success, helped by the ambience of such a beautiful church, the mood lighting and the performance of an outstanding choir. The evening included readings of poetry and prose by narrator James Wilson, a man with a voice to die for and worthy of coming to the concert on its own. It was particularly fitting that the choir dedicated the beautiful piece “The Hills” by John Ireland to the memory of Paul Miller, the late headmaster of St Andrew’s CE Primary School, Yetminster. It was fantastic to see people attending our church for the concert from such a wide catchment area and I lost count of how many times the comment was made on how lucky we were to have such a beautiful church. The choir did not charge for their performance and we raised £510.00 on the night, of which £50.00 will be donated to the Paul Miller Memorial Fund. We look forward to hosting future concerts within the church and a link to our website is provided below: http://www.wrigglevalle ybenefice.org/index.php /yetminster Graham Plaice

The Junior Wriggle Valley Players
We are the only local drama group for children in the Wriggle Valley, which takes children from aged 516. We perform twice a year on stage with other functions such as fairs in between. We also sing at Sherborne Abbey at Christmas. Currently we have 12 members, which is our lowest number ever and if we are not supported by the local community then we will have to consider the viability of the group, which would be a shame as we have been going for 14 years.
The children have fun while learning the skills of presenting, performing dance, prop making and scenery building. We meet weekly during term time at Leigh Village Hall 5.30-7pm. Our last production was Scrooge- a ghost of a chance. It was amazing to see how confident the younger members have become and the cast performed beautifully over the two nights. As always it is a shame that the children did not have a full house to perform to but they did a fantastic job both on the stage and backstage. What is next I hear you cry…well we will carry on with our Victorian theme throughout the summer for various fairs and events.
We plan to perform “Grease The Musical” in October but only if we have enough members to make a cast and this where you, The Wriggle Valley Magazine
readers come in, I need a cast of 20 for this show… so do you know any children including teenagers who would like to join us? If you can help or have budding young artists in your home please ring me on 01935 872471 for more information.

YETMINSTER SCOUTS Yetminster scouts reached the final South West regional cooking competition and were one of two teams to represent Dorset. The competition took place at Cheltenham with the finalists from Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Avon, Wiltshire and Gloucester.
The standard of cooking was high with each team preparing, cooking and serving a three course meal for four people in two hours. The team of four boys had limited utensils and only two gas rings to achieve the meal. Hygiene, timing, theme, menu, team work and taste were all factors to contribute to the final score. All the teams should be very proud of their results. The food was good enough to be served in a restaurant. Yetminster managed to come fourth overall and were one point off winning the best dessert. Well done boys for your hard work. I like to give a big thank you to Waitrose for supporting Yetminster
Scouts with the ingredients for the cooking competition. We took part in the District Bike Trail Challenge at Symondsbury and Sam Williams won first place for Yetminster Scouts speeding round the course so fast the marshals were unprepared for a winner to cross the finishing line so quickly. Great cycling Sam. Over Easter the scouts helped serve refreshments at the Old Vicarage Coffee Morning and run a stall. This Spring they have been busy planting potatoes and sowing seeds for their smallholding badge. Time to air the canvas and go camping. Dawn Perry, Scout Leader

I thought that you might like to hear some good news! During a recent burglary an owner’s car keys were also taken and his car stolen although it was subsequently found abandoned after having unfortunately been involved in a collision. Local Police working alongside CID were able to identify the offender and a 22 year old local man was arrested at an address in Weymouth. He has subsequently been charged with Burglary and Aggravated Vehicle Taking and will be appearing at Weymouth Magistrates Court.

ONE DAY A YEAR – You Could Hear a Pin Drop On 24 June, Leigh’s very own and very ancient custom will take place. It won’t be accompanied by fanfares or crashing cymbals. Houses won’t be decorated with bunting or garlands of flowers. Crowds won’t throng the streets. You might see the odd poster and you’ll probably see a board at the Cross saying “Candle Auction Tonight”. Candle auctions are as old as history. Ships’ cargoes of exotic goods such as spices and silks from the East Indies were sold in this way. Samuel Pepys referred in his diary to an event in September 1661 at which three hulks moored in the River Thames were sold as a candle burnt out. At Tatworth, near Chard, seven and a half acres of watermeadow are still auctioned every year in Ye Olde Poppe Inn. The auction takes place in private and the flame is hidden behind a small screen so the bidders can only see the reflection of the flickering light against the wall. Leigh’s auction is for two pieces of land, Beer Mill Mead and Alton Mead, and the burning candle is in full view of the
Copy for March issue by 12 February please
assembled company. If anything it seems to make the auction even more exciting. While you watch it all happen you might like to reflect on the longevity of this ancient rite. It’s seen two world wars, the entire reign of Queen Victoria, the Napoleonic wars, and much, much more. Who knows. It may have been happening while Pepys was writing about the sale of those hulks. And why might you hear a pin drop? In his Dorset-based novel , John Meade Falkner describes how the lease of the Why Not Inn was sold for the next five years by means of a candle auction. As with some other auctions, a pin was stuck in a candle and the sale continued until the candle had burnt down to the pin and the pin fell to the floor – the origin of the phrase “you could hear a pin drop”. Leigh’s auction doesn’t rely on a pin but the excitement is no less great as you watch the flame flicker and splutter as its end gets ever closer and you and the bidders speculate on just when the final bid will be made.

NEWS FROM ST ANDREW’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL
SPORT FUNDING
Tennis
We have been lucky this year to have received the Sports Premium Funding and this has enabled us to have an excellent year, full of sporting opportunities for all the children of St Andrew’s. One of the best ways we have spent the funding this year, has been to pay for, or subsidise, extracurricular clubs and activities during the school holidays. It has been wonderful to see so many children taking part and engaging in sport with finances not being a barrier. We had an exciting 'disability' sports week, where we had a taste of different adapted sports. It was great to give the children new challenges and use completely new sets of skills and of course to see how talented these sports men and women are!
Our PE storage Kick boxing system has been completely refreshed and we have lots of resources available to our class teachers to teach exciting lessons. Our playtime equipment has been rejuvenated with lots for the children to choose from. S k i l l e d specialists have taught classes at St. Andrews: cs gymnastics, multi-skills Gymnasti and swimming throughout the year, in a sequence of lessons that both staff and children found really valuable (and lots of fun). We have just had tennis sessions and a Curling new cricket club has also just started. Our children are so lucky to be able to take advantage of this Sport Funding which really enhances their health, fitness and, notwithstanding, gives them great enjoyment. A Boccia healthy body helps secure a healthy mind ready for learning. We are still in search of a football coach to support our team in a club and at matches in the autumn term, so do come and see us if you think you Paralympic basketbal l could offer this. www.standrewsyetminster.org.uk/

PAUL MILLER MEMORIAL FUND On Saturday 11 April the final construction of the raised memorial garden situated on the roundabout took place. A huge thank you to all the people BEFORE that gave up their time during the day to assist with the construction, it was great to see so many people and this really did help to complete the garden in such a short time. Thank you to Darren Oxland of Hastoe Homes Ltd for the extra hardcore we needed at short notice. A special thank you to Barry Rivers who gave his time and expertise to ensure that the garden was completed to such a high standard. During the coming weeks, once the newly laid grass has taken root the garden area will be planted out with bulbs and later in May bedding plants will be added. Together we have created a lasting memorial for a very special person that will provide colour, brightness and enjoyment for years to come..

efore ordination I worked for about nine years as a research chemist. My background and training is in the logical and meticulous way that science approaches a problem. I mention this because I was struck the other day by an article I read extolling the scientific approach of a Secular Atheist view on life. This meant, the article continued, that Secular Atheism could hold a neutral position on the problems of life and stand above religious ones which must be, by their nature, flawed. It seemed to me that some Secularists and Atheists are trying to claim an intellectual position to which they are not entitled. Now I don’t particularly want to decry Atheism or Secularism although neither are philosophies that I could subscribe to. Science can do many things but what it cannot do is speak to a faith in God and
certainly it does not necessarily hold a neutral position. In my view Atheism and Secularism are every bit as much an act of faith as is religion. In fact in some ways they require more of an act of faith than religious belief does because many religious people would claim personal religious experience as evidence of the divine. Such people might of course be deluded – we cannot really say, but in the world of scientific research no evidence should be disregarded or ignored. Don’t be fooled – Atheism and Secularism do not hold morally superior or neutral positions standing above religions and religious belief. They are, to all practical intents and purposes, religious belief systems in their own right and as such have their philosophies, doctrines and evangelists. What they do not have is a monopoly of the truth – whatever that may be!

MARCH 2015 “Each leaf, each blade of grass Vies for attention. Even weeds carry tiny blossoms To astonish us.” Marianne Poloskey - Sunday in Spring Leigh’s keenest gardeners still have several months to reach perfection for June’s Open Gardens Days but many must already be getting ready to ‘astonish us’. We cannot guarantee that the weather will be on their side - but we hope for the best. RAINFALL After a series of years with abnormally heavy rainfall 2015 is maintaining its pattern of being much drier than usual. January and February totals were 20% down and March was drier still with 22mm/0.9” - only 40% of the 2000-2014 average. Most of this fell in 2 days, with 7.5mm/0.3” on the 1st and 12th. TEMPERATURES March temperatures matched the long term average. Although the coldest night saw only -3.3C/26F instead of -
5.3C/22F, the warmest day (14.5C/58F on the 20th) was well below the usual 17.8C/64F. SUNSHINE There were very few days without measurable sunshine, but total ‘sun hours’ were below average with 91 instead of 105. The sunniest day was the 18th, with 7 hours of sunshine. PRESSURE Pressure in March was much higher than usual and it averaged 1027 mm/30.3” instead of 1015mm/30”. It was highest on the 4th, with 1041mb/30.7” and lowest on the 25th, when we had one of the only five days with measurable rain and pressure fell to 1008mb/29.8”. WINDS The windiest day was the last of the month, with a ‘moderate gale’ peaking at 36mph (Force 7). This was normal for the month, and nothing like 2008’s March record of 55mph (Storm Force 10). The average peak wind speed for the month averaged only 18mph instead of 20mph. Philip Bryan

GARDENING
...gone gardening CREATING A WHITE GARDEN A white garden has an elegant and magical appeal. Ideally choose a site in a part of the garden that does not get the full sun. A white garden in hot midday sun can look tired and lack lustre. Dappled or light shade will give you the best effect. However if you have a hot aspect you can still have a white garden but it will probably be better appreciated in the early evening at dusk. White gardens are not really pure white there are many shades of white. White is the colour which shines however and against a backdrop of evergreen shrubs white plants positively glow. You can use many shades of evergreen and deciduous shrubs and trees as these create the density and volume which is necessary to give the overall scheme depth and interest. Variegated green and silver shrubs act as footlights in a shady border. Use silver foliage plants like Artemesia Powys Castle and Cynara for architectural form and stature. You might split the garden into formal sections using dwarf box hedging, or break an otherwise purely herbaceous border by introducing an upright conifer. The odd blossoming tree will work and also attract birds into the garden. Ornamental crab apple or cherry trees can be used to abbreviate corners of the garden creating height and interest. In spring white flowering bulbs look good in clumps. You might use snowdrops, crocus, narcissus and tulips. White periwinkle and
pulmonaria illuminates the shadiest patches under trees
and shrubs glistening like stars and gives good ground cover. In early summer the beds and borders shimmer with white lupins, Allium Mount Everest, Delphinium Snow Goose, Thymus Silver Posie, Anenome Honerine Jobert, Dicentra spectablis Alba, white agapanthus, Veronicastrum virginicum Alba gives vertical structure and looks stunning behind Hydrangea Annabelle. Penstemon Snowstorm and Delphinium Galahad rub shoulders with white Phlox and Digitalis alba. Use white shrub roses like Rosa Little White Pet, Iceberg and Lichfield Angel. A rambling rose like Rambling Rector looks good trained up into an apple tree or over a wall. Climbers such as Jasmine off Affinis, Trachelospermum and Solanum alba, also Clematis armandii, and Clematis Henryi can be used. Nicotiana sylvestris is essential for fragrance near a seating area. There is a huge variety of plant material available at this time of the year. Having put your border together if gaps appear then look for a few annuals down at your local nursery. I offer a border design service free of charge if you buy your plants from Bailey Ridge. Happy Gardening! Sue Dodge

The formal name of the history society is “The Hundred of Yetminster History Society”. It’s a bit of mouthful, and a chore when it comes to writing a cheque (although we do have a stamp!). So where did the name come from and what is a “hundred”? The term “hundred” refers to an administrative division of a shire for military and judicial purposes. It was current until the Local Government Act of 1894 replaced it with district councils. It represents an area of land equivalent to 100 “hides”, or 60-120 acres. When introduced by the Saxons, a hundred was space to sustain approximately 100 households. It was headed by a or . He was responsible for justice, supplying military troops, and leading its forces. Typically each hide supplied one fighting man. During Norman times the hundred would pay taxes based on the number of hides. To assess how much everyone had to pay, a clerk and a knight were sent by the king to each shire. They sat with the shire-reeve (or sheriff) of the county and a select group of local knights. There would be two knights from each hundred who would be responsible for getting the money to the sheriff and the Exchequer. Groupings of hundreds were used to define parliamentary constituencies from 1832 to 1885. On the redistribution of seats in 1885 a different county subdivision, the petty sessional division, was used. Hundreds were also used to administer the
first four natio n a l cens uses from 1801 to 1841. T h e Hundred of Yetminster includes Yetminster, Ryme Intrinseca, Chetnole, Leigh, Melbury Osmund, Melbury Bubb and Melbury Sampford. The founding members of the society chose the title to demonstrate inclusiveness (although that term was not current then). Today we would like to think that we can be even more inclusive than that - at minimum the area embraced by the Three Valleys. And of course anyone beyond with an interest. Meetings are held in Yetminster, in the newly named Yetminster Jubilee Hall at 2.30pm second Wednesdays unless otherwise stated. New members are always welcome. For details contact John Ferretter, Treasurer and Membership, at john.ferretter@btopenworld.com or 01935 873812. There is also a programme of visits, see below.

LEIGH WI FEBRUARY As we sat waiting for our Visiting Speaker to start we were all sniffing the air in anticipation for there before us was a delectable selection of cheeses for us to sample along with a glass of wine - a winning combination! Mel Glynn of Windyridge Cheeses, with 30 years experience had come along to help us choose the right cheeses for our cheeseboard when we are faced with a bewildering array of national and international cheeses at the supermarket. There are 5 categories of cheese and each one was discussed in detail and most helpful of all, platefuls were passed round for us to taste and comment on. VERY HARD CHEESE such as parmesan, Gruyere and Emmental. HARD PRESSED CHEESE such as Cheddar, Double Gloucester and Red Leicester. BLUE CHEESES such as Stilton which are pierced with steel rods to allow the mould to develop.
MOULD RIPENED SOFT CHEESES such as Brie and Camembert. The outside of the cheese is sprayed with a coating of Penicillium camembert which is actually millions of minute mushrooms giving it a white, powdery appearance and adding to the flavour.
FRESH CHEESES such as mozzarella and some goats cheeses. These have less acidity than other cheeses and so are better eaten fresh. We were advised to ask to taste the cheese before buying it and even to smell it as this indicates how fresh or ripe it is. We tried one called Brie de Meaux made with raw or unpasteurised milk. Quite frankly it smelled like cabbage or even old socks
but it tasted delicious which was very surprising. Mel also advised serving fruit such as apples, pears or grapes with the cheese as this is a counter balance to the richness of the cheese. Mel was extremely generous with the cheeses he provided and gave us all a most entertaining and informative evening. Morag Orchard MARCH At our Birthday meeting in March we welcomed members from other WIs in the area, Bradford Abbas, Thornford , Glanvilles Wootton, Yetminster and Hermitage. We were celebrating our 88th Birthday and as the WI movement is 100 this year, it shows how long there has been a branch here in our village. Jill Evans reported that our Jumble Sale had been very successful and we are looking forward to our Family Fun day on 11 July when we hope to raise lots of money for the Julia House Children's Hospice.

Our speaker that evening was Tracey West on "The Secrets of Sustainable Living". She was very amusing and regaled us with books and poems she had written over the years and her motto seemed to be "Taking the freaky out of Eco"! She encouraged us to recycle and also to use charity shops - which I think most of us do already. She had written a book called the "Book of Rubbish ideas" and from that she showed us how to use all sorts of left overs to make a very easy flat bread recipe which she then let us taste. She
is involved in the Women's Action Network Dorset group and she has raised money for them by writing a book of poems, one of which she read for us called "On the Beach". She was keen to promote us all having a better work/life balance and said how she had found creative writing had helped her through some of the darker times in her life. She ended her talk with a poem she had specially written for the centenary of the WI. We then all tucked in to a very delicious supper - no left overs that evening!
Our meeting on 26 May is Belly Dancing with Clare Davis - new members always welcome. Anne Reason
RHYMEWelcome Rob & Sue GROUP Wydra who have a last managed to move into Fern CotWRIGGLE VALLEYtoWOMENS We welcomed a return visit by Sue Dona who gave us a most interesting and amusing talk on the west coast of Italy. Having lived there for over forty years we were given a backcloth to so much, including the artist who create marble mirrors, great cultures and wonderful paintings with particular mention to the beautiful Florence paper. Twice a year much fun was had; a race of ten barebacked horses and jockeys ride around Chianti. Sue had much to tell us and we do hope that time will allow another visit. The date for our next meeting is Tuesday 19 May at Gable Court at 7.30pm. Our speaker will be Jenny Gloster and the subject is "BECUS I CUD Not Spel". Ruth Sanford
WRIGGLE VALLEY MOTHERS' UNION We enjoyed a fun quiz and a scrumptious tea at Barbara Driver's home in April and we are looking forward to our meeting at Frances Moule's home on Tuesday 5 May at 7pm at Ryalls Ground, Yetminster when we will have a short Holy Communion service followed by a Bring and Share supper. Our group will be helping with another Marriage Preparation Day on 10 May and Messy Church "Who is God?" on Sunday 31 May - so we are keeping busy! YETMINSTER AND RYME GARDEN, ART AND CRAFT SOCIETY To help our members prepare for a long, happy summer in the garden, we got off to a cracking start in April. Firstly we had a rare opportunity visit to Avon Bulbs in South Petherton where we were able to explore their premises and purchase summer bulbs at discount prices. Secondly, Gardeners’ Question Time came to Yetminster. Our knowledgeable panel of Philippa Louden, Mary Simpson and Robin Debell dealt eloquently with wide ranging subjects from dealing with tomato blight, non fruiting apple trees and heavy clay soil to eliminating slugs and producing sparkling wine from grapes grown in Sherborne. Many of their answers were embellished with helpful, and sometimes unusual, input from the audience and most of us went home wiser in all sorts of directions. PLANT SALE: The Plant Sale will take place on Saturday 2 May and David Fogden has again kindly agreed to host this at Cross Farm in Church Street. The sale will run from 10.30 – 12 noon. We recommend arriving on time. Last year we had some stunning plants and the tables were cleared rather quickly. There will be tea and coffee and a raffle. PEACHEY FIELDS: Our local source of high quality summer bedding plants. We have arranged a shopping afternoon for Saturday 23 May at 2 pm. HESTERCOMBE GARDENS: The date for our outing to Hestercombe Gardens has
been changed to 2 June. This, we are told, is quite the best time to see the gardens, and particularly the roses, at their peak. DISCOUNT SHOPPING AT CASTLE GARDENS: Members have been offered a further chance to enjoy 25% discount off whatever they fancy on 11 June. Details to be confirmed. RHS WISLEY – Open to Non Members: On Tuesday 30 June, the society is renting a coach for a day’s outing to the RHS gardens at Wisley. In addition to our members, we are offering this outing to anyone who would like to join us. Tickets are £15 for RHS members and £28 for non-members. This covers the cost of the coach journey and entry into the gardens for non RHS members. Enquiries to outings.yetminstergardensoc@gmail. com
Next club meeting - Tuesday 9 June: Neil Ross is coming to help us put the X-Factor in our gardens and how to add impact and charm. Some useful advice perhaps before we let ourselves loose at Castle Gardens.

LEIGH DISCUSSION CLUB APRIL Tuesday 7 April saw a really excellent turnout of members, and it was also especially nice to welcome a couple of new members. This was to be the evening of our AGM but first our very own Mick Harris, with the help of his son Dan on laptop, presented us with an interesting talk on Fairground Rides. Back in the 1860's Mick's Great Grandfather John operated a timber merchant business from a yard in Sussex. In 1901 John died, but because timber had became less available his son Herbert turned to a new venture by purchasing the remains of an old steam powered galloper which they repaired and Harris Bros Fun Fair became a reality. The word galloper is the English name
had on display models of vehicles, showman vans and merry-go-rounds. A thoroughly enjoyable presentation which was most appreciated by all present. Well done Mick. AGM – Last year’s minutes were read and approved. Chairman Rachael Clark thanked everyone for their efforts and contribution throughout the past year. There were no changes of officers apart from two committee members standing down and being replaced.

for a roundabout or merry-go-round. Now, six generations later they are still operating this traditional fair. Herbert's original galloper along with swing boats, Noah’s Ark and other attractions are still drawing the crowds along the south coast. The Harris family now runs around 26 traditional events, the most notable are the Findon Sheep Fair, the 700 year old St Lawrence Fair at Hurstpierpoint and the one day Fair in Petworth's town centre where the family has held the charter to be keepers of the fair since 1897. Mick and Dan were able to show us many photographs depicting life throughout those six generations. Mick also

News from Dorset County Council Trading Standards Service Boiler room scams, would you recognise one?
You receive a telephone call out of the blue; the caller tries to convince you into buying shares that promise high returns. Sound too good to be true? In reality the caller is a bogus stockbroker, probably based overseas cold calling as many people as pos sible to persuade them to invest in either worthless or non existent shares. They may even be able to provide false share certificates and other documents to make it seem credible. Once the callers, the fraudsters, have got as much money as possible from their victim they disappear.
In one particular boiler room fraud between 2003 and 2007 one thousand UK investors were defrauded of £70 million. As these companies are usually based outside the UK victims may not be eligible for compensation. To make matters worse the fraudsters will share their contacts list with others and victims may find themselves receiving further telephone calls from other boiler room scams. ●Have you bought shares from someone you don’t know over the telephone? ●Were you promised high rates of return? ●Have you given them your bank account details? For further information and advice call either Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 040506 or visit www.adviceguide.org.uk.
