Editor’s musings… A golden time of year when the evenings start to draw in and all in the garden is golden. Perhaps it’s time to join one of our many clubs p 72- we are a very sociable bunch in the Wriggle Valley or watch one of the local movies in Leigh or Yetminster, pp 17 & 21, or needle felt a puffin, p 22, or learn how to use an iPad. ..or even go phishing!! I am sure, like many of you, I keep on getting dodgy emails purporting to be from people in the WVM email address book. Our new resident IT guru Anne King has written an article helping us to keep our details safe on line which is well worth a read, p 39. We would like to welcome Beer Hackett to our Wriggle Valley family, to share our news, views and events. We are also looking for a new Leigh rep - it is not too an onerous task but one that is greatly appreciated as the reps have their fingers on the pulse of local news. Let me know if you are interested. Have a lovely golden month and enjoy Your pumkins.

V W M The Wriggle Magazine is FREE to you but readers are invited to make voluntary donations towards the cost of production. These should be forwarded to the Treasurer at Mallows House, Church Street, Yetminster, DT9 6LG. Cheques can be made payable to Wriggle Valley Magazine. Thank you for your continued support

LEIGH.....

s always there have been lovely events in the past month and more to come in October. As soon as you get this magazine then rush off to the Village Stores and buy your ticket for the Fabulous Race night on 3rd October! It is certain to be huge fun and will help raise funds for Leigh’s very own forest school – Pogles Wood. What could be better! In order to avoid missing out on a single event did you know that you can receive a weekly email summary of What's on in Leigh? To do this just sign up on the village website at www.leighvillage.org.uk Looking back through my records I see it is over four years since I took on the role of news coordinator for Leigh. It is a proper treat to be first to read all the news and the wonderful editor makes sure that it is never a chore! I am having a few problems with my eyes and would really like to pass the baton to someone new now so if anyone would be willing to take it on then do please contact me. I shall be on summer holiday/ honeymoon!!!! by 12th October so could you please send in your items of news as early as possible next month. Finally, welcome to Ron and Joan Carter who are moving into The Old Post Lodge and Camilla and Mark Hankinson and their twin daughters who are moving into Frampton Farm. We bid a sad farewell to Karen and Graham who have been such a valuable part of the village community. We have foiled their attempts to leave several times but it looks like they have finally got away this time so we wish them the very best of luck in their new life.

ST ANDREW’S CHURCH, LEIGH We are awaiting two outcomes – firstly, permission to erect a shed in the churchyard and secondly for a Faculty from Salisbury Diocese to move the Font to in front of the Rabboni window and to create of a child friendly space there. Maybe by the next edition in November, we will have some answers! Thank you to all who helped in so many ways to make the Fete such a success. It raised the magnificent sum of £1,647 which is being shared between St Andrew's Church and the Village Hall. We hope you all agree that it was good for it to be a joint venture, thus making it a real village event. We are especially grateful to Duncan Moore and the team for all their hard work. We could have done with the weather being a few degrees warmer but it did not rain! Watching Charles Buckler’s shire horse, Susie, was a real treat. Our next Family Service is on SUNDAY 18th OCTOBER at 10.15am when we will be celebrating Bible Sunday and hope to have lots of books

there for us all to look at – especially a selection of children's books. Don't forget the monthly coffee morning and Bring & Buy on Tuesday 6th October at 10.30am - thank you to all those who support these. They are fast becoming a key part of the village calendar. And finally … Advance notice of a couple of musical highlights for your diary: STANCHESTER QUIRE IN CONCERT Saturday 7th November at 7.30pm – in the church. A programme of songs to warm the cockles of your heart on an autumn evening with refreshments. Tickets from Leigh Village Shop A GRAND CHRISTMAS SINGALONG Sunday 20th December, 5.00 - 8.30 pm – in the Village Hall – a veritable feast of singable songs for all ages, some seasonal, some not, with refreshments. THE OLD VICARAGE CARE HOME We are also proud to announce that we have won the best whole home approach section of the annual national NAPA (National Association of Activity Providers) awards. We have also won the best arts project for our adaptation of the game of Ping Pong. It is now called Push Pong and all levels of ability can and do take part. We are very grateful for the support offered to us from members of the Leigh table tennis club. As well as all of this we are shortlisted for the chef’s masterpiece! This section involved us planning a special themed meal (we chose Thomas Hardy’s Wessex) and using locally sourced ingredients to provide a very special occasion for our residents. This involved months of preparation, including trips out to some of the pubs featured in Hardy’s novels to carry out vital research tasting their food! A group of us, including two residents travelled up to London on 23 September ‘In October 2009 The Old Vicarage became a part of The Gold Standard Framework. After three years of working towards accreditation for providing excellent end of life care we were accredited ‘Beacon’ status in June 2012. Over the last three years we have continued to develop the GSF and in July 2015 we had our re-accreditation inspection; we are proud to announce that we have been awarded ‘Beacon’ status again. The GSF has enabled the home to demonstrate that we work as part of a multi-professional team and has promoted considerable amount of understanding between other homes, community staff and GPs. All our residents deserve the best care

for a Gala tea party and award ceremony. Who says that life in Care homes is dull! Our Christmas Fair is on Saturday 14 November. Star of the Fair this year is Hissing Sid, a real life turkey. Sid is a pet and is most definitely not heading for the table on Christmas day! Jan Milward we can provide ‘Gold Standard of Care, this includes support that is of a high quality, reliable and consistent, helping them to live well and spend their last days in the place of their choice.’ Emily Spearing

our scribe was invited to join the Striders and Riders setting out to travel around Dorset to raise funds for the repair of the County’s Churches. Whilst I couldn't accept (the demands of the WVM Editor called) it did make me think that there are numerous people doing things for the village and for local organisations effectively in isolation. How nice if we all talked to each other and shared ideas and resources! - what about a Village Association then to represent us or is this a step too far ? Just an idea but let me know what you think. I was also unable to contribute to the inter-village Boules Battle and I understand that, unfortunately, the Yetminster team were defeated but I am assured that our day will come and we will be triumphant! Our very own John Ferreter of Yetminster History Society fame was interviewed by Abbey Radio (Abbey 104) about the Society's Magna Carta exhibition which was on display in Sherborne Museum. their fields so it promises to be an inspiring evening so do try to be there to support the church's fund raising efforts. If like me you are completely flummoxed by plant names then the Gardening Club might be able to help as at their meeting on Tuesday 9th October in the Jubilee Hall at 7.30pm Janette Milton will be giving a talk explaining the meaning behind plant names - I might finally be able to impress my Mother-in Law whose knowledge of all things gardening is simply awesome!. Some interesting news in that the South West Trains Network Alliance has announced plans to run regular trains on the rarely used connection between Yeovil Pen Mill and Yeovil Junction meaning that we will be able to access the main line to London from the village. Also relevant is that rail passenger numbers using the Heart of Wessex line have grown by more than 140,000 and there is a call for an hourly service on our line which can only be good news so fingers crossed. Finally a farewell to Rev’d Simon Brignall and his wife Claire who leave us to take up an appointment in Chile. Many thanks for all your hard work and we wish you well for the future.

The flashbacks to her escape from Austria are understandably the tensest moments of the film, and are balanced by some very witty writing in the modern sequences. Well there is a chill in the air and we have been stacking our logs ready for the colder weather although the Gallery continues to be bathed in wonderful sunlight at the moment. The classical guitar recital by Samantha Muir at the end of September was a great success with extracts from Bach, Sor, Torroba and Villa-Lobos, as well as some delightful ukelele arrangements of some Scottish folk songs and, of course, tea and cakes. The ever resourceful Fleurtatious Florestry are returning with their Autumn workshop on Friday 9 October - they really are enthusiastic about flower arranging and it's amazing how their simple little tricks can improve a display so much!

We are also fortunate to have Carla Taylor doing another of her wonderful needle felting workshops at the end of October when the group will be making needle felted puffins - I defy you not to fall in love with them ! - and our friend Laurence Belbin is continuing with his drawing and sketching classes on Mondays - these are for beginners and improvers so everyone is welcome. It was delightful to meet Mark Newton when he called in as part of his "round Britain on a mobility scooter ‘mission’". He is photographing military and lifeboat graves in aid of charities connected with these and is an example to us all. His web site is www.aroundbritain.org.uk where you can follow his journey. Details of the Gallery's events are on our website at yetminstergallery.co.uk otherwise just pop in for a chat - it would be good to see you. Sarah Hedin, Gallery Owner

VILLAGE NEWS

A FITTING MEMORIAL OR A LONG REIGN The gold leaf Roman skeleton clock with the initials EIIR and LX emblazoned on its face, set now above the entrance to the Jubilee Hall in Yetminster, is a timehonoured memorial to the Queen's Jubilee year in 2012 and, suitably, it has been installed in time to celebrate the reign of our longest

serving monarch of over sixty three years. It would not be appropriate to honour our Queen without, at the same time, honouring the Duke of Edinburgh who has given her unstinting support over their married life together during the course of her reign. Therefore the framed portrait of Queen and Consort, husband and wife, which hangs inside the entrance to the Hall is a reminder to the residents of Yetminster of the huge contribution both have made to the standing and welfare of our country. The original proposal for the clock to be placed on the East face of the Church tower, to be linked into the seventeenth century clock

mechan ism which was adapted at the beginning of the twentieth century to chime out the national anthem in celebration of Queen Victoria's long reign, was turned down on the grounds of possible mechanical failure. With the renaming of St. Andrew's Hall as the The Yeminster Jubilee Hall the opportunity arose to installing an electrically driven clock, placed in such an appropriate position that it seems to have resided there always, as a memorial for generations to come of our longest serving monarch whose whole life has been devoted to serving our nation. We are very pleased to announce that we have appointed Bella Neate-Clegg as the new governor for the Boyle’s Education Foundation. She is heavily involved in education as a teacher in St Andrew’s CE VC Primary School as well as being immersed in the local community as editor and designer of the Wriggle Valley Magazine. She has taken the place of Rev Simon Brignall who is imminently leaving to take up his new role as Chaplain in Viña del Mar in Chile. We wish him well in his new exciting venture and thank him for all the hard work he has put in over the last few years. The Foundation is a charity originating from a school set up over 300 years ago using

funds from the will of the renowned scientist, Robert Boyle. Boyle’s Educational Foundation uses its income from the properties comprising the Old School buildings in Yetminster for the educational benefit of the children of Yetminster, Chetnole and Leigh Parishes, primarily by making grants towards post-school education, whether at university, college or apprenticeship.

INTER VILLAGE COMPETITION REPORTS 2015 INTER-VILLAGE SKITTLES In the first of this year’s inter-village sports competitions held on Friday 21 August at the Yetminster Sports & Social Club a rampant Yetminster team beat the combined forces of Leigh & Chetnole by 26 pins. Stars of the winning team were Stuart Barnett, Dave Jesney & Andy Roles. Three of the opposition Bill Joliffe, Steve Porter & Steve Broadway each scored ‘spares’ but it was not enough to overcome a strong Yetminster team. INTER-VILLAGE SHORT MAT BOWLS The Yetminster team prevailed convincingly against Leigh winning 58 to 48 in Monday's Intervillage Short Mat Bowls Competition An enjoyable match, keenly fought and a well done to the winners with commiserations to the runners up. Well done everyone. Pat Sims (your roving sports reporter) INTER-VILLAGE JUNIOR FOOTBALL We were lucky - Sunday 6 September turned out to be a beautiful September afternoon, perfect for the inter-village junior football on the picturesque Chetnole Playing Field. With the football pitch cunningly reduced in size to suit the size of the boys and girls playing, the 9-a-side teams battled it out end-to-end for 15 minutes each way. It was a well fought game; the first half very evenly matched with the halftime scores level. However, despite some valiant goal keeping from both

goalkeepers, the ‘Other Villages’ edged ahead in the last five minutes. The final score was Yetminster 3 : Other Wriggle Valley Villages 5. It was lovely to welcome back some of last year’s players who are now too old to play. Alex Elwick did a super job refereeing the second half and Henty Read took on coaching and organising the ‘Other Villages’ team. Huge thanks go to Adam Elwick for setting up the pitch and refereeing the first half, and to all the fantastic good-natured supporters from both teams who made it a lovely afternoon.

INTER-VILLAGE JUNIOR ROUNDERS This match followed on from the above. We were very pleased to welcome some reinforcements to both teams, however the football players were a little weary by this point. There was some great batting and some equally great fielding and catches. In the end Yetminster took the title with a score of Yetminster 9 : Other Wriggle Valley Villages 6. Thanks go to Carol Attwell for scoring and to all the assistant referees (spectators JJ). Angela Orton

I was lucky enough to attend the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan this summer and had an amazing time. Dorset sent 36 children over to experience the Jamboree. We arrived in Tokyo after a 14 hour journey feeling tired. The next day we continued on the Bullet Train for four hours to Hiroshima and onward by coach for two hours before we arrived at Yamaguchi at night to pitch tents. Jobs were assigned the next morning to build the site. Unfortunately we had a typhoon hit that night flooding the site and slowing down the progress. After three days the participants came in their thousands. In total we were 36,000 in an area 1km by 3 km representing 162 countries for a ten day experience never to be forgotten. The scouts mixed with other nationalities from around the world, experiencing new beliefs, cultures and activities. They visited Hiroshima, the primary school and stayed with local families for a couple of days. Over that period of time Japan had a heat wave so temperatures reached 51oC in the shade and 90% humidity making sleeping in a tent hot. We all came back with new ideas and horizons. I have shared my wonderful experiences with other leaders along with a District Scout camp. I would like thank the Parish Council, Yetminster Fair Committee and Boyles Trust for supporting my trip to Japan and look forward to sharing some photos of the Jamboree with you.

GENERAL EVENTS GENERAL NEWS

If you listen to all the news about fraud, scams, ‘phishing’ and ‘hacking’, you might never want to go on the internet at all. There are some steps you can take to help stay safe. It’s helpful to firstly look at some of the reasons behind internet fraud. Financial gain - people want to get your bank account details so they can steal your money. Identity theft people want to get your personal information so they pretend to be you and do things in your name that benefit them. Another problem is internet viruses. This article is just looking at email fraud, otherwise known as ‘phishing’. Phishing is the process of designing and sending fraudulent emails, often in the guise of emails from banks. They can look exactly like the real thing down to the bank’s logo, name and the wording they usually use. It can be very hard to tell that they are not from your bank. The single biggest and most important clue is that they contain a link inviting you to ‘click here to verify your details’ or ‘if you did not order Zombie Wars III at £29.99, click here to report a problem’. Another common theme is ‘fraudulent activity has been detected on your account, contact us now’. They are trying to rile you or worry you or both. Links often appear in an email either as a ‘button’ to click on or in blue writing. Here’s the golden rule: NEVER CLICK ON A LINK in an email, however bothered you are, even if it looks like an organisation you have an account with, UNLESS: you are expecting it and it’s

from an organisation you are currently dealing with and it has your real name on it rather than ‘dear account holder’ or ‘dear gullible@btinernet.com’. Instead telephone your bank or email them separately or ask a more experienced friend to look at the email for you. Even apple.com is targeted by villains. The same rules apply and you can forward suspicious emails to reportphishing@apple.com. It’s also important to have secure passwords that cannot be guessed - email me for the iPad Club handout on password strategies. Anne King Anne-the-iPad ipadery@icloud.com

ON THE BEAT A MESSAGE FROM MARTYN UNDERHILL, DORSET POLICE & CRIME COMMISSIONER Dear resident I am writing to ask that you take part in a government consultation to highlight the imbalance in funding for rural police forces. Alongside the National Rural Crime Network, we are urging the government to reconsider how police forces are funded, and specifically to take account of the higher costs of policing rural areas. Dorset has been hit with central government budget cuts of £14.8m since 2010, which is over 20% of the total money handed down from government. When taking inflation into account the 20% cut becomes a

30% cuts in real terms. This has impacted the number of officers and staff with 16% fewer officers policing Dorset since 2010 and 9% fewer staff supporting operational teams. Officers in Dorset patrol 1,024 square miles with only 6.3% of the county being classified as ‘urban’. Rural crime is very different to criminal activities that take place in our major towns and it is vital this is recognised nationally. I would ask all resident to take part in the consultation and I will continue to lobby government to ensure fair funding for Dorset. To download a pre written letter to the policing minister or to sign the petition, please visit www.dorset.pcc.police.uk/RPM Thanks for your support. Martyn Underhill

COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE?...... We are a small voluntary group from the Wriggle Valley who provide short term support, transport, befriending and shopping for people of all ages. Our group urgently needs more volunteers for the villages covered by Yetminster Surgery. This is not an onerous commitment-much of the support is on a one-off basis. You would be given training and if the task is for transport you would be reimbursed for your expenses. Helping Hands has been operating for several years and there is a proven need for this service, especially taking people for medical appointments. . THANK YOU AND GOODBYE It has been a privilege and pleasure to work in the Wriggle Valley. I could never have imagined when I came here what an active community the Wriggle V alley is. One look at the Wriggle Valley magazine gives you an idea of the wonderful variety and talent that makes this a special place to live. Thank you to all who have enriched our lives with your hard work, skill and vision for these villages. It is humbling to have received your cards and gifts. Thank you to the Old Vic, the Lower Covey Toddler group, St. Andrew's Primary school, St. Andrew's, Leigh, for your special gifts, and to all who contributed to a very generous cheque to see us on our way! We are several pounds heavier than we were when we first arrived thanks to your generous hospitality; food is surely one to Dorset's great gifts to the world and we have enjoyed it very much! And finally to all the faithful Church members who keep our buildings open and warm, and to the hard working Church Wardens and PCC members, thank you for keeping the heart of our villages beating with the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.

News from Dorset County Council Trading Standards Service ROGUE TRADERS TARGET DORSET’S ELDERLY COMMUNITY Dorset Police and Trading Standards Officers are warning householders in Dorset, particularly pensioners, to be extra vigilant after receiving increased calls from across the County relating to suspected rogue traders going door to door. The offenders offer services including power washing driveways, cutting down trees, tending gardens and selling chainsaws and generators. They also carry out general building work for cash including tarmacing Householders need to be vigilant and not be forced or coerced into commissioning work, even if they are told it’s urgent. The work is often costly and unnecessary. Trading Standards also advise against giving personal details to cold callers on the telephone – a scam where fraudsters pretend to be from a reputable company and then defraud victims.

If someone calls you unexpectedly asking for your bank details say ‘no thank you’, put the phone down, dial 1471 and write down the number. Call the police immediately on 101. NEWS FROM ST ANDREW’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL

SAYING GOODBYE TO OUR SCHOOL RECTOR SIMON BRIGNALL Simon has been with us for over five years sharing our worship here in our lovely school and also in our mother church, St Andrew’s Yetminster. He moved with his family, wife Claire, who was Head of Languages at the Gryphon and his four sons and one daughter, Annie who came to our school. He knew the area well as he spent many summers here as a boy with his great Aunt, Mrs Blaine who lived in the Manor House, in Melbury Bubb and died at the grand old age of 104. During his time with us he has shared our weekly worship and you can see from the acrostic poem the children wrote, how much he was loved and respected by us all. He was also a governor and supported most of the functions within the school.

CHURCH NEWS

One of the most spiritually inspiring things we, as Christians, can do is to take part in a religious Pilgrimage. Typically, it is a journey to a shrine or location of importance to one’s belief and faith, and pilgrims often band together and walk to their destinations enduring a degree of hardship in order to show humility and commitment. Chaucer famously wrote his Canterbury Tales as he walked with others from Southwark to the shrine of Thomas a’Beckett at Canterbury at the end of the 14 century. Over the centuries pilgrims have undertaken long pilgrimages from Spain, France and Germany to Rome, more often than not lodging in monasteries over night during their journeys. From the 6 century to this day pilgrims have

walked along the St James Way from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostella at the North West tip of Spain. The whole point of these journeys is not only to reach the destination, but to pray and meditate as one walks along to, as it

were, re-charge one’s spiritual batteries. However there is a pilgrimage with a difference; one of the most wonderful pilgrimage experiences is to be found by going to the Holy Land, where the pilgrim gets to visit all the sites of significance in the New Testament. To wade in the river Jordan at precisely

the point at which Jesus was baptised is a moving experience, just as standing on the very rock on which he made breakfast for his Disciples after his resurrection has a profound affect as one looks across the Sea of Galilee. Visits to Capernaum and Nazareth bring the whole Gospel story alive in one’s mind, and it is hard not to be spiritually lifted by being in those places, treading the very paths along which Jesus and his disciples walked. In June this year I had the privilege of taking a Eucharist service at the spot where Jesus fed the 5,000. My fellow pilgrims were deeply moved by this service and the many other acts of worship we shared on our spiritual journey. If you ever get the opportunity to go to the Holy Land, please seize it; it is the Christian experience of a lifetime.

August 2015 “Let’s all go on a summer holiday…” 1960’s Cliff Richard song and film

This was the classic month for copying Cliff Richard and his Shadows by heading as far away as possible to find the sun. RAINFALL 2015 provided the second wettest August since our records began in 1995. The month was only 6mm/0.2” short of 1997’s recordbreaking total of 173mm/6.8”. The wettest day was August 14, with 23mm/0.9”, and there were only 11 dry days instead of the usual 15. SUNSHINE Not surprisingly, sunshine was much rarer than usual. There was none at all on 4 days (instead of 2) and the total amount of 86 hours of sunshine was 31 fewer than usual. The sunniest day was August 8, when the temperature reached 27.8C/82F. Temperatures (deg. C)

August 2015

TEMPERATURES The hottest day was August 22, with 28.9C/84F. This was close to the usual peak of 29C/84.2F but a long way below 1995’s scorching 35C/95F. The Late Summer Holiday on the the last day of the month gave little cause for celebration - it was one of the coldest days, only reaching 16C /61F and with 3mm/0.1” of rain. PRESSURE August had an average pressure of 1020mb/30.1” - slightly higher than usual. August 11 saw 1029mb/30.4”, but there was no sunshine that day. Pressure plunged to a low of 1006mb/29.7F on 23rd, and this was accompanied by 19mm/0.7” of rain. WINDS August was a calm month, with wind speeds very much lower than usual - they averaged only 7mph instead of 14mph. The windiest day was the 22nd, with a gust of 17mph much lower than the usual August peak speed of 27mph. Philip Bryan

GENERAL EVENTS GENERAL NEWS GARDENING

...gone gardening OCTOBER PUMPKINS As the summer disappears cooler mornings and evenings prevail, some drab and grey, some misty and moist and some bright and chill. But on the pumpkin patch things are happening. As I write this after recent pumpkin inspections it would appear that the average size of our pumpkins is bigger this year than ever before! It might be because of the recent rainstorms as 90% of the fruit is composed of water. It could be because we have used large quantities of reindeer dung from Thunder, Flash & Lightning to cultivate the ground before we seeded. Pumpkins need a lot of food and a long growing season (75 to 100 frost-free days) so you need to plant them by late May once the last frosts are over. Pumpkins are easy to grow if you have the space. Pick somewhere in full sun to light shade. If space is a problem you could try them in a big 5 or 10 gallon bucket! Work in a good amount of organic manure before you sow and even heap up the patch into a hill, this will heat up the soil more quickly and as a result the seed will germinate faster. It will drain better too. You will only need four or five seeds per hill as the pumpkins grow at an astonishing rate. Pumpkins n e e d

lots of water to help them to grow big so make sure that your hill does not dry out if there is a drought. As the fruit develops, they should be turned (with great care so as not to hurt the vine or stem) this will encourage an even shape. Gardeners who are looking to grow a mammoth pumpkin should choose the right type of seed, Big Max is one Atlantic Giant is another, but once fruiting select two or three prime candidates on your plants and remove all other fruit and vines. Small decorative gourds can be trained easily up a trellis and will look tremendous. TO HARVEST the pumpkins, cut the fruit off the vine carefully with a sharp knife or pruners. Be sure not to cut too close to the pumpkin; a liberal amount of stem (3 to 4 inches) will increase the pumpkin's keeping time. Store in a cool place on a piece of old carpet or similar if it is really big, until you need it and don’t let the frost get at them or they will rot. Sue Dodge Bailey Ridge Plants

YETMINSTER & RYME GARDEN, ART & CRAFT SOCIETY SCULPTURE BY THE LAKES Sitting in the sun eating cake, after a garden visit, is one of the best ways to spend the afternoon - in my book anyway. And if it involves sitting beside tranquil lakes amidst lovely surroundings, dotted with spectacular bronze sculpture, that’s not bad either. A visit to Simon Gudgeon’s Sculpture Park at Pallington Lakes is a must for everyone, although I suspect most people find it a difficult decision as to which sculpture they would like to take home. Assuming of course, you are seriously rich. But if not, there is still an enormous amount of pleasure to be had from walking round and just stroking them! If you’ve been there you will know what I mean. Then there’s his wife’s fascinating contemporary garden with imaginative plantings of bamboo, tall grasses and some challenging topiary using Lonicera nitida. Visitors are encouraged to take a picnic and spend time absorbing all aspects of this glorious place. So we took thermoses of tea and cake, the sun behaved as though it was trying to compete with all that lay beneath

it, by shining in a way we had almost forgotten and we all just ‘chilled out’.

OCTOBER MEETING On 13th October we have Janette Merilion giving us a talk on “What’s in a Name? – the meaning behind plant names.” If you have ever wondered about the meaning behind plant names this is a fascinating subject and once grasped, you will understand where your plants originated from, what their growth habits are and whether you have made the right choice in trying to grow them in the first place. Janette is a garden designer and historian, running her own design business from her home in Lincolnshire. She has given radio and BBC TV broadcasts on horticulture and regularly travels across the UK giving lectures on just about every aspect of gardening. We look forward to seeing you then and non members are always welcome. Pandy Brown, Society Secretary

TUESDAY CLUB –SEPTEMBER There were several apologies for absence, including one from Heather and Dorothy Baldock who were attending Babs Wyman’s funeral. We were all very sorry to have lost yet another member. Once again we were fortunate to be welcoming two speakers, instead of the one listed Robert & Henry on the programme. Eddie Hammond Upton came to tell us about Dorset songs but he had sterling help as well from Philippa, his wife. We learnt that Dorset like many other places at the beginning of the 19 Century became very active in collecting the local songs. In 1904 a book of Somerset songs had been published and soon after that Robert and Henry Hammond started doing the same in Dorset. They rode all over the county on bicycles and collected 600 songs. Over 100 were provided by Marina Russell who lived in Upwey. The songs were collected from ordinary working people and varied greatly in their content. There were working songs, sea songs, songs of love and seduction, drinking songs and there were very many sad songs

dealing with the tragedies of life This of course provided the opportunity for Eddie to sing us many examples. One interesting snippet of information was that the Hammonds had collected some material from a relative of Bonnie Sartin. After a break for our usual tea, Eddie and Philippa finished off with two rather special songs The first was Wiliam Barnes “Linden Lea” in the Vaughan Williams setting which we were encouraged to join in with and the last was one that no-one knew as it had been written by Philippa herself called “Jurassic Waltz“ and recalled the walk that she and Eddie had done along the Jurassic Coast from Studland to Exmouth, listing all the places they had passed through. The afternoon proved to be one of our most enjoyable and there was even mention of a return visit which we would all look forward to.

OCTOBER MEETING we have From Guns to Roses by Edward Ramsbottom and in November Dorothy Baldock returns to tell us about Working Animals and we finish off the year in December with Carols and a special tea. Come and join our friendly group! Sylvia Bryan

CHETNOLE AND LEIGH GARDEN CLUB REPORT Monday 7 September

The club welcomed Charles Dowding the renowned organic market gardener, advocate of the ‘no-dig’ method. After a brief introduction outlining his experience in the growing of vegetables he explained the ‘No-Dig’ method of vegetable growing: the ‘no-dig’ method feeds the soil, encourages worm activity and fungal interaction, which is most beneficial. In 2012 he moved to new a third of an acre plot, to concentrate on vegetables and developing a healthy market garden business, in particular ready prepared salad leaves. Through a series of photographs Mr Dowding showed the development of his garden from a completely unprepared field to a thriving vegetable garden with a greenhouse, poly tunnels and a range of beds. The photographs illustrated the ‘nodig’ method well. Firstly he laid out manageable size beds; putting on a deep layer of compost to exclude light to the weeds and then covered with a mulch such as old carpet/cardboard this weakens the roots and after the third or fourth time

of hand weeding they die, thereafter just skim the surface to disturb the roots of annual weeds and these disappear! In following years apply about an inch of compost to the beds in the Autumn, including those to be planted with carrots and other similar crops, plant the seeds in the compost – the plants will send down good roots into the soil below. In selecting compost care should be taken – cow manure is good but some composts can have residues of chemicals in which can damage crops. To maximise yield double and inter cropping were explained. Mr Dowding was thanked for his interesting and thought provoking talk. Thanks to Ian Lingwood for technical assistance.

The next meeting is the AGM on 5 October for members only. There will be a plant auction, members are asked to donate plants, potted and clearly labelled. Michele Aldhouse

OUR IPAD CLUB sessions got off to a flying start in September with both classes being fully booked. Reassuringly there was no heckling and nobody had to stay behind after class or go and stand outside - I think my school background is seeping out! My trusty new 32” TV, an Apple TV box and Wifi, provided a way of showing the display from my iPad on the larger screen. For the Thursday Club in the Trim Room, there are a further six sessions, combining iPad Basics with a walk through of various apps and I always aim to end with something funny - this time it was ‘My Blackberry is not working’ via Youtube, a sketch rather like the Two Ronnies ‘Four Candles/Fork handles’ one, but with a technological slant. If you’ve missed out on booking the course this time, there will be another opportunity with a a new Thursday afternoon club in January, again over seven sessions. On Tuesdays the people who came to the Club I started last (school) year in the snug of the Chetnole Inn (big thank you to Simon and Maria), wanted to continue. With better broadband at home, we are now meeting in my dining room on Tuesday mornings twice a month. I hope they stay the course and are not deterred by being set homework! A nifty shelf over the kitchen hatch turned it into a hatch cum conference display - if you think this is amusing, Mark I, was a TV balanced on an ironing board. Since we were practising downloading brochures onto our iPads and had the practical example of the Dillington House course brochure to work with, we hit on the idea of club outings. Decima and I are embarking on the Looking Good, Feeling Good, course on Saturday 21 November. Lots of customers ask me about iPad Art so I'm going on a refresher, also at Dillington House on Wednesday 28 October ‘More ideas for iPad Art’ lead by the multi-talented

David Chandler. If you have not heard of courses at Dillington House, you’ve missed a treat. It is a hamstone manor house run by Somerset County Council as an Adult Education Centre. A one day course is great value at around £50, including morning coffee, 3 course lunch and afternoon tea. It would be good to have some more local people come along too. You would need to make your own arrangements for booking, but do let me know if you’re tempted. For those who are already happy grappling with most aspects of their iPads, who do not wish to come to iPad Club, I will be offering iPad Club eXtra - with sessions on Photography, buying and/or selling on eBay (suitable for computer/tablet users) and social media. For businesses I will be offering a range of practical half-day courses to make the most of digital technology for business. The ‘commercial break’ this time around was to promote Somerset Art Weeks from 3 to 18 October. I have a couple of copies of the full brochure if you are keen to do the rounds and stashes for the Horethorne Group, based in Charlton Horethorne and representing 15 artists and craft workers, so something for everyone (daily 11am-6pm). End of an era? The show goes on ributes and thanks to David Fogden. 11 years on the committee as treasurer and chairman, several years performing both duties. New chair, Antony Brown, presented David with a painting of one of the many splendid houses of Yetminster – David’s own! David has more than ably been the public face of the society and represented our interests at county and parish level. He has built up team of complementary skills and talents on the committee for Antony to take into the future. He now “retires to the back benches” to enjoy the many events, meetings and outings without the stress of feeling responsible for them. Thank you David. Your guiding hand and wisdom will be missed by all.

T

AND AFTER David’s farewell, what next? Napoleon. Back to the history business: Dr Diana Trenchard told us about Dorset’s detailed preparations for French

invasion in the 1790s and 1800s. In 1793 the French revolutionaries declared war on England. Between 1796 and 1798 there were plans to invade Ireland (then part of the UK), Newcastle and Bristol, and actual landings in Wales and Ireland. By 1803 there was, in today’s terminology, a “real and present threat”. Across the Channel could be seen 130,000 troops with 2000 ships around Boulogne ready to ferry them across. The southeast was heavily defended so Dorset was a very likely landing area. Dorset’s planning was immaculate. The population was counted and analysed. (A first, leading to the first nationwide census in 1801.) Every butcher, carter, miller, blacksmith, whatever trade, was known. Every ablebodied man was assigned a task e.g. to remove crops and food supplies in the path of the invader. Detailed plans were ready to evacuate ¾ of the population – and this when serviceable roads were few and far between. So good were the plans that they were adopted by the government, and repeated in other coastal counties around the country. And yes, in the organisation there was a forerunner of “Dad’s Army” called the Sea Fencibles responsible for watching the coast for invasion. No doubt there was a local “Napoleon” on the lookout for the real one.

NEXT MEETING: 2.30pm Wednesday 14th October, at the Yetminster Jubilee Hall, Yetminster. DAVID DUFF: “WATERLOO – AN INSIGHT INTO THE BATTLE” New members always very welcome. Just come along.

LEIGH WI August SHARANDY’S BIRDS OF PREY We all enjoyed a wonderful evening in the company of Sharon and her beautiful birds of prey in Leigh Village Hall. Sharon has been fascinated by birds since she rescued a budgie from being mauled by crows, when she was only seven. It developed into a lifelong passion and she has been keeping and training birds of prey ever since. She introduced us to Bracken, a five year old tawny owl which sat on her gloved arm gazing adoringly at her until Heather, similarly gloved and holding out a piece of chicken, called her from the other end of the room. On silent wings Bracken soared across the room over the heads of us all and landed safely on Heather’s

arm to eat her piece of chicken. The barn owl, Speckles, was next. The barn owl is famous for its silent flight and ghost like appearance at night. This is the result of adaptions to their feathers but unfortunately this means that their feathers are not waterproof. Sadly this means that two days of solid rain, when the chicks are hatched, stops her from hunting and the babies will die of starvation. When barn owls nested in barns she could hunt for mice and rats in the barn itself but with so few barns available this is no longer an option for many of them. Barney the European owl was the largest of the birds on display. He has crepuscular eyes which means that he can hunt in almost any light. They have no n a t u r a l predators but they are persecuted with poison

and shot and their numbers are dwindling. The last owl was also a barn owl but a male and therefore much smaller than the female and surprisingly, instead of being white he was black or melanistic and would not have survived in the wild but we all thought he was delightful! A number of us took turns to call and feed the birds and the whole evening was fun and very interesting. Sharon’s love of her birds is returned in full by the birds themselves who look upon her as a mother as she has reared them from tiny chicks and seem to delight in showing off in front of the audience. WRIGGLE VALLEY MOTHERS'S UNION On Tuesday 1 September we held our Music and Poetry Event at the old School Gallery in Yetminster as advertised in last month's magazine. I don't know what the ghosts of Boyle’s School would have made of the two excerpts from Lewis Carrol's 'Alice in Wonderland', but the very lively audience present appeared to be very much entertained by it. Certainly, the music content supplied by Eddie Upton and accompanied by Tony Durkin at the start would have been approved. Sue Footner's beautiful soprano voice soared to the Gallery's rafters and Ray Drewett's clever guitar playing and singing gave us all much amusement. The members of the local Mothers’ Union interlaced the evening

The

with their favourite poetry and prose and Sarah kept the drinks 'On the Boyle' with the light bites on offer. As the event was to help raise money for the charities we support, we were pleased to be able to announce at the end of the evening that the amount of £380 had been collected. Very many thanks to all the help and support given by our special guests, our M.U. members, Sarah of the Gallery and our lovely audience without which it would not have been such a successful evening. If you would like to join us in our activities and learn more about the worldwide Mothers’ Union, please contact me on 01935 872440 or Anne on 01935 873726. Margaret Shipman

FEBRUARY

WRIGGLE VALLEY WOMEN’S GROUP The new season began when Sheena and Veronica visited us in Yetminster to recall their day out on “Bargain Hunt”. It started when Sheena filled in a form and sent it off to the Bargain Hunt office, not knowing how much it was to alter their social lives. Recalling the interviews, the camera men, and the hospitality, you could hear how they enjoyed their day and it was so surprising to hear the amount of pressure there was to record so many shows in one day. For persons who professed not to know much about

antiques, and who thought they should do a crash course at Denman College before going on the show (and then going on the show before the crash course!), they went home having beaten the other contestants, AND made money which not many can say.

NEXT MEETING is on Tuesday 20 October 7.30.pm. at Gable Court when Jennie Marfleet will be talking about the Leprosy Mission. This is still an important health problem. Everyone is welcome at this OPEN Evening. Pat Smith wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk
