Ever given the task to your students to make a PowerPoint presentation or Keynote on the “Instruments of the Orchestra?” Or to write a report, collate some links or just research “World Music?” W here is the “music” in this? How are your students involved in the world of music or interacting with orchestra timbres? With Wix.com students can create windows into their own learning with real music and performances!

1. FIRST IMPRESSIONS As a music educator I found it difficult to collate all the many resources in books or online into one unit of work. Then there was the issue of, “what is achievable?” or “what exactly is out there?” when it comes to create project based tasks. The ‘why’ is obvious as it diminishes classroom management issues, enhances ‘on task’ time and produces content rich and authentic learning experiences. But what could I, a non-code speaking teacher do? • Orchestra Wix.com Video Comments: …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

2. APPROACH One of the key aspects to this project is to approach it as an educator wanting to be creative and allowing students to be creative – within a certain framework. There are two tasks to complete: a) To research and create a website based upon your studies of The Instruments of The Orchestra b) To research and create a website based upon your studies of the Music of Another Culture • Both projects align with the NSW Board of Studies Syllabus Outcomes & Topics (4/5.7, 4/5.8, 4/5.10 & P/H 8, P/H 9) for Junior and Senior Music classes. • Students love these tasks and given the scope to be creative online (their domain) they share ideas, resources, inspire you and allow you to be a teacher: Someone who can motivate and show them music from around the world. • This can be a group ‘in-class’ only task or a set research assignment (I have done both) • I have attached an assignment sheet in PAGES and WORD format under Session 1 here: 1. Pages Version 2. WORD Version

4. BE CREATIVE

* Make sure your browser has the ‘disable pop up windows’ option unchecked otherwise the editing window will not open * You can create up to 3 main websites on your account. department links for resources

These can be full websites, widgets or

• The limits on the free account are 200mb of storage and 500mb monthly bandwidth (just slows down)

5. ON TASK By now students will have become accustomed to the interface and will either search YouTube for how-to videos or start fiddling with the editing controls. Your task at this point is to remind them of the task and to get the following completed: a)

Content – written, images, sounds, links, blogs, notes from classroom texts etc.

b)

Email and Login password written in their diaries (important if a group task)

c)

Nominate a site foreman who can settle differences of taste if in groups

d)

Remind them to copy into a text file all the web links to their found content

* A PDF of online images, sounds, and links can be found here on my Spaaze Resource Page.
