K UN G FU PAN D A SC OR E WR IT I NG Film Scoring in GarageBand This session will be useful for anyone wanting to integrate film- scoring classes into their lessons or to instruct in the basics of foley sound effects & editing. It will start with some basic scoring features and extend into more advanced operations. There will also be materials for a whole unit on teaching Film Music in the Classroom.
1. WHY FILM SCORING? “Music for Film, Radio & Television” is a popular topic in both the junior and senior music syllabuses. It is incredibly popular for all students and you can teach so many musical concepts through experience, creativity and the novelty of GarageBand. Plan for this Session: 1. Introduce students to GarageBand with a smaller project (Blues Composition) 2. Beginning the Film Music Topic (with background information) - PBL 3. Starting the Scoring Project (with included PDF) 4. Foley Sound Effects 5. Composing in GarageBand 6. Your Turn
2. BEGINNING FILM MUSIC TOPIC • What is our role as an educator? ~ Design instructional units that encourage “effective use of stuff” not merely the use of stuff (Thomas Cooper, Networked Learning PPT 2009) • The purpose & aim is not just to use technology for technology’s sake • The purpose & aim is not to give students a ‘make a loop composition’ task so it is easy for me • The purpose & aim is to make a task where almost a year’s worth of drilling on the concepts of music can be imparted by inspiring students to create their own film score, utilizing technology, and aiding their exploration of how music is manipulated in film

• What is it? An independent learning task, on a focused unit, with guided instructions and collaborative learning opportunities for every student in the class ( Better Learning Through Structured Teaching by Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey)

4. FOLEY STAGE SFX • In referring to Jack Foley students are exposed to how sounds are created in film Video Clip to Watch • Students can start with Jack Sparrow or move directly to the first stage of their film compositions • First stage of Kung Fu Panda is to identify the SFX spots using hit points. This gives students a goal to aim for and keeps them on task • Introduce students to Sound Librarian for free sound effects and loops (limit 50 sounds per day)

5. COMPOSING IN GARAGEBAND • Students by this stage will have a series of SFX outlined on their scores and are beginning to explore making background music using loops (some will want to compose their own using MIDI Keyboards) a) Loop Based b) Motive Based c) MIDI d) MP3/WAV e) Voice-Overs
* Composition will become a personal project for many students. I ended up letting some groups come in during break times to work on their film scores. It engages them when they have the freedom to be creative and you can guide their learning
> EXPORTING THE SCORE • Exporting the score is the best way to mark the final product but the journey will reveal so much creativity and innate musical knowledge from your students that you will wonder how you are going to ‘step it up’ next term • Keep the videos on the local school server and if you can, upload them to YouTube so the kids can show their parents and friends their finished work
