M
y love affair with jazz started years ago! I have fallen madly in love with the art form, the artists, the musicians, and those who support this genre of music. Jazz fits perfectly into my creative and artistic disposition, which is in close proximity to fashion and the arts. These three facets of beauty have always played an integral role in my life. So falling head over heels for the true American art form of jazz was totally understandable. Yet, what surprises me is that I had no idea I would find my purpose in the process. We all have a divine purpose in life and some people know their purpose, while others struggle to find direction. I do believe that we have inner guides that help us navigate life’s obstacles, but we have to listen very closely to that inner voice. Everything that has transpired since I started my jazz exploration feels right; the process, the people I have connected with, the feedback, the cause to advocate for, the growth of the company and the decisions I make every day. I have an overflowing plate in life and people always ask how I do it all? My mom chimes in to say, “It’s because you love it and if you did not love it you would never do so much.” This journey has been completely amazing to me and I get very emotional thinking about it. We are always asking the question, “What’s my purpose, why am I here, what is my calling, what am I suppose to do?” Many people make a living and never live their passion, fulfill their dreams, or realize their purpose. I feel tremendously blessed to have found my place on this path of life, to realize it and be fulfilling my dreams. The purpose that I have longed to find is now laid out, vividly, in front of M.E.E.to embrace.
And Then There Was M.E.E.
I should step back a bit and explain how this was all created. THE MELODY IN M.E.E.. and THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. are products of Multifaceted Exquisite Events Incorporated, which is the events planning company I created in 2010.
I’ve always enjoyed planning and designing events and I established this company during a rejuvenation break from corporate America. The name Multifaceted reflects the many dimensions and perspectives that I have to offer; passion, commitment, style, and organization, coupled with a love for fashion, the arts and music. I wanted to melt all of these loves into one, I wanted my events to be works of art; thus, Multifaceted Exquisite Events Inc. was born. I started out like most event organizers planning weddings, corporate functions and parties. The tides changed during the planning phase for my milestone birthday party. I wanted a saxophone serenade and was introduced to Dean James. I had no idea who he was at the time, but after being introduced to his music, I not only liked it, I loved it. It was the most beautiful instrumental music that I had ever heard. I could not stop playing his CDs. My favorite tracks to date are still “Love Takes Time,” “Skylight” and “Brighter Days.” Dean started talking to me about various types of jazz: bebop, smooth, latin, mainstream, straight ahead, traditional, jazz royalty and legends: Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltran, Ramsey Lewis, Cannonball Adderley, Grover Washington Jr., etc. and over the next weeks he sent me songs and played songs by different artists for me to listen to. I was smitten with Cannonball Adderley. Cannonball Adderley was a prominent jazz saxaphonist that played in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Even though I kept referring to Cannonball’s amazing tune “Mercy Mercy Mercy” as the Pink Panther song before I was familiar with it, Dean rolled with it and continued to expose me to more music, but politely reminded me of the name each time I forgot it. Dean did perform at my birthday party and was a major hit. From that point on my love affair with jazz grew and I wanted to know more. I started incorporating jazz musicians or artists into my events and quickly became a host, promoter, media outlet and advocate for jazz. I had found my niche.

2012 Recapped 2012 was outstanding and the summer was explosive. We partnered with Martha’s Vineyard Jazz Festival to bring jazz enthusiasts to the official vacation destination of jazz. “When Jazz Goes on Vacation, It goes to Martha’s Vineyard.” We hosted a San Antonio and an Atlanta meet and greet for our friends, partners and supporters. We landed in the Alamo City to cover the San Antonio Summer Art & Jazz Festival and the blazing heat could not keep us away. We held our 2nd Annual Chocolate Summer Night event and delivered an exciting poetic and musical experience that had everyone captivated. We also interviewed and covered some of the most incredible jazz artists in the scene: Gail Jhonson & JaZz in P!nk, Jeff Lorber, Mike Burton, Elan Trotman, Warren Hill, Stephen Richard, Everette Harp, Michael Lington, Marcus Adams, Eric Darius, Dwan Bosman, Tom Braxton, Reggie Hines, Jackiem Joyner and Keiko Matsui. We implemented Jazz Steps With M.E.E., a program that builds musical bridges and relationships with our jazz counterparts across the USA.

What to Expect from M.E.E. in 2013 We are very ecstatic for the arrival of 2013. We have several important projects in the planning stages and many to implement. We are rolling out our magazine and it has been a laborious but rewarding task to design and develop. THE JAZZ IN M.E.E.. partnered with Martha’s Vineyard Jazz Festival to bring jazz enthusiasts to the official vacation destination of jazz.
W
e set out for our breathtaking summer adventure August 3, 2012 to enjoy seven days of jazzy bliss on the “V”... It took us two planes, two shuttles, a taxi and a ferry ride to get to the “V” but the experience was all well worth it. We all know when jazz goes on vacation, it goes to Martha’s Vineyard. If you were looking to enjoy a real vacation this island was the place to be…add jazz and it was unforgettable. The Martha’s Vineyard Jazz Festival “All things Jazz” presented the diversity of jazz in a variety of formal and informal venues, to include live musical performances, art exhibits, book readings and signings, film presentations, and master classes, all while you vacationed on the beautiful island of Martha’s Vineyard. The festival was a fun and engaging experience that presented jazz in a variety of assorted and unique formats. On Saturday, August 4th the festival kicked off with a parade from the Oak Bluffs Steamship dock to the campground, led by Made in the Shade, a New Orleans-style brass band, and dancing in the street never looked so good. An all-day jazz extravaganza in the Tabernacle followed the parade. The atmosphere was electric and excitement filled the air as people gathered to bask in the music. Some sat inside while others lounged on the grass and listened from outside, and groups gathered on porches as far away as the edge of the Arts District to get an ear full of jazz.

Covering a wide range of jazz styles, the lineup featured some of the most entertaining artists in jazz, including saxophonist Elan Trotman, three-time winner of the New England Urban Music Award for Best Jazz Male; drummer Teri Lyne Carrington, whose latest album won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album; Drew Davidsen, Best New Artist by the Oasis Contemporary Jazz Awards in 2011; dynamic saxophonist Tia Fuller; and the impressive, boldly stylish, enchantingly cool and absorbingly brilliant urban jazz harmonicist, Frédéric Yonnet.

On August 5th, Sunday afternoon, an elegant and fashionable crowd arrived at Hooks in Oak Bluffs to enjoy an incredible buffet and the smooth jazz performance of the charming and alluring vocalist Vivian Male. Vivian packed the house! This was her first performance on the island and people came out to support her. She gave a very passionate and entertaining show. Hooks was filled to capacity. You could feel the love for this Bostonian native and she gave the crowd much to cheer about with her soulful interpretations of classic songs such as "Stormy Weather." Singer, saxophonist, flutist, and actor Stan Strickland performed an exquisite evening of jazz on the beautiful campus of the Featherstone Center for the Arts on August 6th. Stan Strickland has performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Scandinavia, New Zealand and the former Soviet Union.

On August 7th, Brian King Nelson Quintet , the Vineyard’s premier jazz combo, jazzed up the Island House; their sound and approach rooted in tradition but stretching towards the outer edges of the jazz spectrum. The front line hard bop sonorities of C-Melody sax (not heard since the ’30s) and trombone ride over the modern push of the group’s piano, bass, and drums creating a new and compelling blend of inside and outside. The band’s sound is informed by the extensive individual experience of the members garnered from touring across the US, Caribbean and Europe, as well as appearing on numerous jazz recordings. The film screening for Chico & Rita was divine on August 8th. Dreamland was the perfect location to view this amazing film and the ideal artistic flair for the festival. Chico & Rita was nominated for a 2012 Academy Award for “Best Animated Feature Film.” Set in Cuba in 1948, the film chronicles Chico, a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unite them, but their journey— in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero — brings heartache and torment. From Havana to New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas, two passionate individuals battle impossible odds to unite in music and love. On the beautiful breezy morning of August 9th, at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven, author Quincy Troupe signed copies of his book. Born July 22, 1939 in St. Louis, Missouri, Quincy Troupe is an awarding-winning author of eight volumes of poetry, three children’s books, and six non-fiction works. In 2010 he received the American

Book Award for Lifetime Literary Achievement. Among his best-selling works are Miles: The Autobiography of Miles Davis and his memoir, Miles & Me. He was able to share his experiences and stories of Miles Davis, jazz royalty. Mr. Troupe also co-authored the autobiographical The Pursuit of Happyness, which was made into a major motion picture starring Will Smith. Larry Brown Quintet was a hot addition to the festival on the evening of August 9th at the Island Bar & Grille on Circuit Avenue. They entertained us with straight-ahead jazz at its best, with a forthright approach to well chosen material, supported by first rate soloists and a rocksolid rhythm section. The Larry Brown Quintet featured Larry Brown on piano, Kent Miller on bass, Greg Holloway on drums, Thad Wilson on trumpet, and Peter Fraize on tenor sax.
Since his formidable emergence on the music scene in the late 90’s, jazz pianist Jason Moran has proven more than his brilliance as a performer. Stunning is what comes to mind after hearing Christian Sands Trio rock the Island House with their bluesy tunes on August 10th. Christian was refreshing, entertaining and super talented. Best known for his tutelage under the late Dr. Billy Taylor, Christian Sands is a “rising star” in the world of jazz. He possesses pianistic technique in abundance, but it perfectly matches his conception. The band was phenomenal, featuring Ulysses Owens Jr. on drums and Matthew Rybicki on bass.
Jason Moran, our fellow Houstonian, was the festival's headliner. He performed on Monday night, August 6th at Dreamland. Mr. Moran and the Bandwagon - Tarus Mateen bass and Nasheet Waits drums - delivered an absolutely supreme performance of original tunes. The crowd exploded with excitement during the stellar musical display. Jason's purely original style incorporates elements of stride piano, avant-garde jazz, classical music, and hip hop — he is virtuoso player.

Isaac Green of Durham, N.C., was attending the festival for the first time this year, encouraged by his wife who was on hand last summer. "I've heard a lot of jazz in my life, but this was right up there with the very best I've heard," he said of Mr. Moran's performance. Among other festivals, Mr. Green has attended the legendary Jazz Festival in Switzerland.

Over the course of his 25 year career, he has garnered a number of honors: recently named artistic director for the Kennedy Center Jazz program, has received a MacArthur Genius award, Playboy magazine's first Jazz Artist of the Year, and has received commissions from a number of organizations including Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Mr. Moran was the recipient of the second annual Vinegard (pronounced like "Vineyard") Award. Mr. Lee established the award last year. This, according to Mr. Lee is, "An award we give to one of our performing artists who we think represents the authenticity of the music." Of this year's honoree, Mr. Lee says, "Jason is one of the most serious cats in music today, and not just in jazz. He's really a leader in terms of moving the music forward." The wire sculpture award was designed specifically for Mr. Moran by local artist Steve Lohman, who said that he watched hours of the pianist performing on Youtube.com before executing the piece. It features Mr. Moran, complete with his signature hat and a piano, crafted from a single piece of heavy duty wire. After the presentation of the award, Mr. Moran ended the evening with an encore and was honored with a rousing standing ovation.

Ana Grace Mรกrquez-Greene, 6,
of Sandy Hook, beloved daughter of James S. Greene, Jr. and Nelba (Amaro-Mรกrquez) Greene, passed away senselessly on Friday, December 14, 2012 during the horrific massacre enacted upon Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.

na was born in Hartford on April 4, 2006, and lived in Bloomfield before moving to Canada and recently settling with her family in the Sandy Hook section of Newtown.

Ana's love for singing was evident before she was even able to talk. In a musical family, her gift for melody, pitch, and rhythm stood out remarkably.

She never walked anywhere! Her mode of transportation was dance. She danced from room to room and place to place. She danced to all the music she heard, whether in the air or in her head. Ana loved her God, loved to read The Bible, and loved to sing and dance as acts of worship. We ask that you pray for the legions of people who are left behind to cherish memories of her. Ana is survived by her father, Jimmy Greene, a jazz saxophonist and an assistant professor of music at Western Connecticut State University; her mother, Nelba MรกrquezGreene, program coordinator for the Family Therapy Institute at Klingberg Family Centers and Central Connecticut State University adjunct faculty; and her brother, Isaiah, a happy, intelligent and musical boy who loves hockey and very much misses his sister.
Dad's Wishes
I wish I could have had the pleasure of seeing my daughter’s smiling face, running across our front lawn from the school bus two Fridays ago, safe and sound. I wish I never had to feel my son’s body slump in my arms as I told him his sister, his best friend and playmate, was murdered at their school. I wish his ears never heard and his little mind never was forced to process the gruesome sounds and sights at school that morning. I wish I could have protected them from such horror – I wish I could have been there at Sandy Hook School that morning. I wish I could enter a room in my house without being overcome by grief, remembering Ana’s presence in the little things: the smell of her shampoo, the sound of her singing or snoring or saying “Hi Daddy!” It is because these wishes won’t come true for me that I’m writing. My reality, the anger, loneliness and heaviness I feel is only made bearable by the faith, hope and love we embrace as a family. There are 25 other dads, whether of a brave

Thank you to all who have contributed through prayer, supportive words or donations and to those who have committed to making peace and love win over fear, hatred or anger. Thank you for thinking of all of the families that were victims, our first responders and our entire community.
In the coming weeks and months, my hope is that laws and hearts will be changed but in the meantime, what do we do? I’m a musician - so was Ana. After a period of recovery, I trust that a new song will eventually be sung. Regardless of vocation, though, if each one of us, in our own sphere of influence, do all we can to invest in the eternal, show love in the natural, practice mercy and provide for another’s well-being, then our reality will look so much brighter. Thank you for your overwhelming support, love and prayers. To quote my Glory Chapel pastor, Bishop Raul Gonzalez, “Together We Will!” Love, Jimmy Greene
Thank you to all who have committed to making a call to action. The layers of this are complex and while we may not agree on all pieces - perhaps we can agree that no parent, grandparent or caregiver should ever again put their child on a school bus only to have their backpack and uneaten lunch returned to them by an FBI agent and police officer because their child was executed at school. When you experience grief/loss in this way, it takes up every little corner of the heart. Walking through grief is a long journey. Essential to recovery is the heart's ability to grow around and through the grief - so that the grief is still there but your heart just gets bigger. This is what the therapist told us. It makes a lot of sense to me. . . . Three things will last forever--faith, hope, and love--and the greatest of these is love. I Cor 13:13 Love wins, NMG

Dear Ana, It's been two weeks and two days since you've left us and I'm hanging on for dear life. Special blanket has lost your smell... and the sky looks a lot more gray. I hear you in every note of music. I see you in every falling snowflake. I miss combing your hair and painting your nails. I miss my tag sale buddy. Remember when we bought that kite at the neighborhood tag sale? You were determined to fly it even though it wasn't windy enough. I must have told you 100 times it wasn't windy enough. Somehow you talked your brother into tying the kite to your bicycle and the next thing I knew, that kite was up in the air. You were so determined! I was so proud of both of you. We ended every night and started every day with an "I love you". I'm thankful we took the time for the little things that don't seem so little now that you're in heaven.

Nelba Mรกrquez-Greene said she hopes the tragedy of the school shooting will bring a greater awareness to mental health issues and to reduce the stigma attached to those with mental illness, perhaps preventing tragedies like the one that took Ana's life. The Couch Conversation and Cappuccino event with Roland Martin, Janice Mathis, and Tyronne Stoudemire from AON Hewitt was extremely impactful. Roland Martin and the panel really provided important and beneficial information regarding politics. The audience engaged the panel which provided excellent political and business takeaways and eye opening moments. Rev. Joseph Lowery, leader in the American civil rights movement and third president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was honored; he shared wisdom and humor with the crowd. Hank's Muse Concert featuring Michael El Dalcoe was a unique blend of talent and the crowd loved it. Five Men on a Stool (Hank Stewart, LaMorris Sellers, Ken Ford, Antonio Allen and Melvin Miller), always the crowd favorite, had everyone rocking and up out of their seats. The Bramer Leon Couture Fashion Show was phenomenal; he took us back in time to experience "Lady Sings the Blues" in fashion. Talk about feeling special… I reached out to the Eric Darius camp to set up the interview and of course I was expecting his management team to call, but one evening about 6pm I received a call from an unrecognized number. “May I speak to Melody Warren?” “This is she.” “This is Eric Darius.” You could hear crickets for a minute, but I quickly answered, “Heyyyyy!!!!!” And the rest is history! A jazz bond was formed with M.E.E. With my gear in hand and sporting my fan club t-shirt, I was out the door! No, it was not Santa Claus coming to town, it was

He rarely comes to the south, but when he does he sells out the show. His last visit to Houston was October 2011, where he teased us with only a few songs. I was more than ready to experience his dynamic and exhilarating live show. I have always been a fan of Eric Darius; he showcases a full circle approach of success in the jazz industry without skipping a beat. Playfulness and laughter were heard from rehearsal as I entered the Red Cat Jazz Cafe. I thought it was quite gracious of him to meet with M.E.E. even though he had only 3 hours of sleep the night before. He joked with the band, showing his lighthearted side, but there was no doubt about him being completely serious about his musical expectations for his show. He rehearses just like he was playing a concert, with the same energy level and power. He is dynamic; I was in awe!!!
I was a bit nervous for the band as I sat there, even though they were the utmost professionals and thoroughly prepared. You could feel the unspoken pressure and supreme level of the bar being raised. As I set up for the interview I could not get Eric’s sax sound out of my head. Eric definitely talks through that sax! The Grammy nominated Jeff Lorber played two packed shows at Red Cat Jazz Cafe with some incredible musicians backing him up: Musical Director Vernon Barbary on bass, Patrick
I have a love of discovery in the moment, so I tend not to over research an artist before interviewing them to actually be surprised by the stories they tell and the questions they answer. I was truly surprised to find out many interesting things about Jeff’s musical journey, but to learn that hip hop stars Notorious BIG and Lil’ Kim sampled Jeff ’s song “Rain Dance“ from his Grammy nominated CD Now Is The Time, which became a huge hit for Notorious BIG known as “Crush on You” was a revelation. During his show he played the song and people gasped because they thought, “Jeff Lorber knows Notorious BIG,” but in actuality it was vice-versa! Notorious BIG had the pleasure of knowing Jeff Lorber! If you would like to experience a similar hip hop vibe from Jeff Lorber the track “Big Brother“ on his Galaxy CD moves into hip hop territory, similar to Jeff ’s grooving “Rain Dance”. Jeff and I had a conversation about musical influences and Thelonious Monk was one that he mentioned to be instrumental. I knew that Jeff danced to the beat of his own drum and created music that he wanted, but it was not until after the fact that I ran into this quote by Thelonious Monk, “I say, play your own way. Don’t play what the public wants. You play what you want and let the public pick up on what you’re doing. Even if it does take them fifteen, twenty years.” This holds true because it has taken me 15 years to discover Jeff ’s ties to the hip hop arena! On May 19, 2012, I had the opportunity to spend the morning interviewing and the evening being thoroughly entertained by the spectacular Grammy nominated jazz legend, keyboardist, composer, and producer Jeff Lorber. He is well recognized for the cutting edge movement known as jazz fusion – a marriage of traditional jazz with elements of rock, R&B, funk and other electrified sounds. I was truly impressed with him and his musical gift, which he discovered at the early age of four. He had not played in Houston since 1982, so this was a real treat for me and the many fans that have awaited his return to the Lone Star state.

I sat mesmerized at the musical flamboyancy that came from the stage, by the man that seemed very low key and conservative during our interview earlier that day. He took the audience on a musical tour of his new CD Galaxy that was released January 31, 2012 on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group. On this CD, he revisits a sound he helped pioneer. Galaxy features Lorber on keyboards, Jimmy Haslip on bass, and Eric Marienthal on saxophones, along with guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. and Larry Koonse, drummers Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl, percussionist Lenny Castro and trumpeter Randy Brecker.

Kirk Whalum & Jonathan butler Powerhouse Duo! THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. had the opportunity to witness the impressive show of Kirk Whalum and Jonathan Butler on April 29, 2012 at the Arena Theater. It was love at first note!!! Jonathan took the stage like a storm in Houston and was amazing. His performance was buoyant and inspiring. He was equally pleasing in person with his incredible personality. Wow!!! We have found our South African jewel! Jonathan performed with a broken foot and offered to take off his boot so that he could get down on his knees to give us the full performance. What a gentleman and champion! Kirk Whalum, the sax phenom, is an amazing talent. He had the Houston crowd buzzing the entire night. He has a special connection with Houston and put on a down home delightful show. Warren Hill All Encompassing! Warren Hill swooped down on Houston Saturday, April 21, 2012 and had me at hello! My experience with him and his music was nothing less than magnificent! All encompassing,
comes to mind when describing him. He delivered an exceptional performance on sax and had the crowd on their feet! The master on the drums that night was none other than Houston’s own Patrick Williams! He took the show to another level! Warren was incredible and Patrick was a special addition and he killed it! Warren could not acknowledge Patrick enough for his show stopping drum performance! Patrick represented Houston well! Way to go Patrick!!! I love artists that share the spotlight! Warren is talented, funny and generous. Wow!!! He treated the Houston audience like family with his warm personality and complete musical package. I met him briefly before and after the show and was impressed that he remembered my name (first and last). I guess Warrens are just special! His show at the Red Cat Jazz Cafe told a story in song. He revealed some of his most precious musical memories and introduced us so graciously to his world. We learned that he had written countless hits dedicated to the true loves of his life… his wife of 16 years, Tamara, and their 13 year old daughter, Olivia, including “The Passion Theme,” “Our First Dance,” “Tamara,” “U R the 1”, “Olivia” and “Still in Love”. Olivia is now getting ready to take over the role of “star” in the family, as her career is beginning to take off. She has a feature film, Olivia Rox, being released as one the world’s first family oriented webisode series. Olivia is an incredible singer/songwriter with over 200 songs composed since the age of four. A natural performer, Olivia starred in the role of Annie for 75 shows during the summer of 2009, receiving an Ovation Award nomination from the critics. Talent runs in the family. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Warren Hill began his musical journey on the guitar and vocals at the age of seven. In his first lesson, his guitar teacher simply asked him, “Tell me your favorite songs and I’ll teach you how to play them.” It was this simple question that set the stage for Warren’s entire musical future, playing the music that he loved. Currently, Warren is touring with the “Soul of Summer,” a package tour featuring Jonathan Butler and Maysa. He is working on several projects including: a new CD, his daughter’s CD and next film, his online Sax Club – with student members around the globe, concert promotion, and an innovative new internet music series. When he is not working, he enjoys the outdoors for long family walks with the dogs, jogging, cycling and swimming. Although if you ask him, his response would be, “Technically I don’t feel like I ever stop working. Even when I go for a jog, I’m

Robert Glasper Robert Glasper Experiment On March 3, 2012, Robert Glasper came home and the line was wrapped around the building of the Red Cat Jazz Cafe as hundreds waited to see our Houston-born jazz pianist. He released Black Radio in late February and the critical praise has piled on thick and heavy since. It debuted at No. 15 on Billboard's Hot 200 chart. He was featured in the New York Times, on NPR's "All Things Considered" and appeared on CBS' The Late Show with David Letterman and NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He introduced us to his new project and it was nothing less than amazing. The home town crowd embraced him and erupted with thunderous applause after each song. I was thrilled to see him and his band perform: Robert Glasper, piano; Casey Benjamin, saxophone; Derrick Hodge, bass; and Chris Dave, drums. I was able to meet him after the show and he was down to earth and humble. His star is shining bright and we are very proud of him.

Destined to connect with M.E.E. First I must tell you that the hands of fate were truly at work. I missed Keiko Matsui’s Houston performance in February, but this time I believe we were destined to meet. My schedule was completely booked until a few days before Keiko’s arrival. Then miraculously my schedule was cleared and I was led to her performance announcement. I’ve never felt anything like I experienced listening to Keiko’s music. Her music is like a spiritual light beckoning for you to come in and find solace from the world. It was a call of rejuvenation, a musical prayer that made my inner spirit swell. I felt compelled to reach out to her team. I thought that it might be a long shot to confirm an interview on such short notice, but her team quickly responded to M.E.E. and the stars were aligned for our notable introduction. On October 6, 2012, Keiko landed in the Lone Star State to promote her new project – The Road…, released in January 2011 by Shanachie Entertainment. The Road…, is Keiko’s long awaited, self produced, 22nd album released in the US. It is also Keiko Matsui’s first new recording in four years and a follow-up to her acclaimed 2007 South African inspired release entitled Moyo, which featured Hugh Masakela among other amazing artists. The Road…, is a riveting collection of timeless, passionate, cathartic, emotional and exotic melodies with lush harmonies and global rhythms. The sense of peace and harmony that I experienced from her music translated into our meeting. Keiko was absolutely divine! I felt an overwhelming sense of calmness while spending time getting to know her. She has a very open and welcoming demeanor and it felt as if we had met before. I was so comfortable with her that I forgot it was an interview; we talked as though we were long time friends. In The Jazzy Limelight. I went to meet Keiko for an interview, but left with enlightenment. Keiko’s star is pretty bright in the industry, and yet she extended her hand to M.E.E. in support of our endeavors and I was moved by this beautiful gesture.
We touched on many topics: her beautiful daughters, work and life balance, how music saved her life, her musical influences, the transition into music from Japan and what her fans mean to her. Keiko has a bubbly sense of humor and was ecstatic about experiencing a Texas BBQ with Joe Sample, who told her to give him a call whenever she was in Houston. Keiko took him up on his offer and Joe Sample invited her over to his house for a Texas style BBQ, and she had a blast!
The staff and management team at Dosey Doe rolled out the red carpet for M.E.E. and were gracious hosts to all their guests. I applaud them for their hospitality and professionalism.

She took control of that stage and delivered a 90 minute non-stop, entertaining and truly unique experience. Jackiem Joyner - Church Boy Renowned chart-topping contemporary jazz artist and producer Jackiem Joyner has traveled all over the world with his signature saxophone sound, yet he returns home—figuratively—on his fourth release, Church Boy. Reaching back to his roots and reigniting his faith, Joyner brings together his beloved jazz and his foundational gospel music. Joyner made his debut in 2007 as a standout saxophonist who plays a range of other instruments.

7. Michael Lington -Pure Michael Lington had a few friends drop by to help with Pure. Lee Ritenour, Jeff Golub, Rickey Minor, Jonathan Butler, Brian Culbertson, Paul Jackson Jr., Michael Bolton, Ray Parker Jr. and then toss in Paul Brown. The stars were all in perfect alignment when it came time to roll tape on Pure, the rest were in the studio performing! From mixing board to microphone, Pure is a five star winner and as entertaining a release as you will find across any genre of music.

ihanna may be the most famous Barbadian making worldwide headlines, but saxophonist/flautist Elan Trotman is another gifted islander who is bringing the Caribbean island’s culture to the masses via music. Tropicality, which will be released February 19th on Woodward Avenue Records, chronicles Trotman’s journey from Barbados

to Boston and celebrates the multihued beauty of the tropical paradise. Trotman and guitar star Peter White produced the 12-track set that was recorded in Barbados, Boston and Los Angeles and includes performances by a stellar array of musicians from around the world. The inherent difficulty for instrumentalists is to “speak” without words, hence Trotman’s challenge to speak volumes through melodic riffs, rhythms and grooves that tell his personal story and share his ardor for his homeland. He
wrote or co-wrote seven of the collection’s nine originals and selected a few fitting covers, including the first single prefacing the album at radio, a rollicking rendition of Stevie Wonder’s reggae-inflected “Master Blaster.” Recording in three widely diverse cities afforded Trotman the opportunity to draw upon an international talent pool that boasts compatriot Barbados-born bassist/producer Nicholas Brancker, British guitarist White, French guitarist U-Nam, Brazilian guitar marvel Fabiano Da Silva, Aruban guitarist Serghio Jansen, Cuban percussionist Luis Conte, and an accomplished American 29

As a child, I spent countless hours at the beach swimming and exploring the beautiful landscapes of the western and southern coasts of Barbados. On a recent visit back home, I began to compose these songs as I walked on those same beaches. My musical journey really began when I left my homeland to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. Tropicality is the story of that journey from ‘Bridgetown to Beantown,’ and I’m very fortunate to have some close friends from across the globe join me on this project. THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. blends the extraordinary talent of Houston artists with incredible artists from around the world. We constantly search for unique and dynamic jazz artists. It was in the process of an intensive social networking talent search campaign that I clicked upon a smile, a sax, a hat and a star quality that radiated from my screen. The photograph included three saxophonists, but this particular saxophonist was paramount! I had not heard one note from this artist but his presence demanded my attention and intrigued me enough to find out more. This shimmer of light was none other than Barbados born, world renowned, Berklee College of Music educated, Billboard Smooth Jazz chart topping saxophonist Elan Trotman! I’m aware it’s a mouthful, but he was just that astonishing.

The Musical Legacy of the Monday Nite Texas Jazz Jam
O
riginally set in motion by Vi and Johnny Williams, jazz legend and bassist, at the J & V Lounge in the heart of old 3rd Ward, the original Monday Nite Jazz Jam has a sixty (60) year tradition on the Houston music scene. Jazz artists like vibraphonist Lionel Hampton, Texas tenor Arnett Cobb, pianist Sammy Price, sax men David "Fathead" Newman, Don Wilkerson, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, vocalist Lil' Esther Phillips, drummer Ben "Scatman" Turner and many others have joined in these weekly musical affairs. Monday night was the night that barbers, beauticians, waiters and musicians were off from work and they would all meet up to experience this phenomenal jazz happening. Groups of musicians would gather to do jam sessions that later became know as “Cutting Sessions”!!! Of course the exciting performances drew crowds from all around.

In later years saxophonist Sylvester “Stank” LeBlanc and the group “5th Ward Express” continued the tradition at a small nite spot on the north side called Pecko's. Pecko's was owned and managed by record producer and music mogul, Don Roby of the famous Duke/Peacock Records. This band included legendary guitarist Clarence Holliman, trumpeter Pat Williams and trombonist Al Jones. Monday became the nite that musicians came out to polish their chops and just be a part of some of the best live music in Houston.

Many times musicians would compete in solos to see who could blow the other musician off the stage!!! Competitions became so great and the music so good that audiences and musicians began to flock to the club to experience these dynamic affairs. The Monday Nite Jazz Jam quickly became the place to be! The 5 th Ward Express’ fame, soon outgrew the club and the Monday Nite Jam session moved to Mingo's. It was then taken over three years later by cornetist and vocalist Leo “The Voice” Polk, who enlisted bassist Adrian Clark, drummer Tracey Shivers, pianist John Torres and one of the early Monday Nite Band members, trombonist Al Jones, who can still be seen at the Jam sessions today.
This beautiful collaboration continued for thirteen (13) years with Leo at the helm. Over the years the band included bass players Jelando Johnson, David Craig, pianists Liz Mendez “The Salsa Queen”, the great Charles Rhineheart and Phil Blackman, drummers Carl Lott Jr. and father Dr. Carl Lott, Sr. along with Sam Dinkins, a New York transplant who was a big part of the growth in the 90’s. Many of those musicians have gone on with major acts and/or created their own ensembles. The Monday Nite Jazz Jam has drawn musicians from around the city and many legendary giants of the industry from around the world. Artists like jazz vocalist Betty Carter, Terence Blanchard, Joe Sample, Ronnie Laws, Randy Weston, Johnny O'Neal, and Steve Turre' have all made the trek to Houston to participate in these Jam sessions. Even the Houston Ballet’s principal dancer, Lauren Anderson, has displayed her talents on Monday Nite.
You can experience this sensational musical affair every Monday Nite, at Phil & Derek's Restaurant with guest artists and audiences literally from around the world. Where even today the fantastic music competitions will continue to bring the hottest musicians from everywhere to shine in the light of... Monday Nite!!! Phil & Derek’s Jazz Cafe has a great music room that creates the perfect atmosphere for this dynamic music and film showcase that is a Houston Music Tradition!!!
Along with other Houston greats, vocalist Anita Moore of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, trumpeter Jay Berg (who replaced Miles Davis in the Charlie Parker band in 1946), “Texas Tenor” Arnett Cobb, saxophonist Jimmy Ford, Down Beat Magazine’s “Musician of the Year” drummer G.T. Hogan, vibraphonist Harry Sheppard (of Billie Holiday fame), music professor Conrad Johnson, guitarist Clayton Dyess, drummer Rick Porter and many other legendary musicians have all been a part of this famous “Houston Music Tradition”. One very positive aspect of these Jam sessions brings music students and young horn players out to test their skills. Being in such a strong musical environment has encouraged many of them to continue their careers in the music industry. The Monday Nite Jazz Jam is not only an event to enjoy, but also a place to learn. These Jam sessions had been held at the Ebony, Sonoma, Cezannes, the Red Cat but have showcased at other venues with great reviews and are now being played weekly at Phil and Derek's Restaurant & Wine Bar, in the River Oaks area.

Carol’s phenomenal “Straight No Chaser” jazz ensemble features the incredible Robert Sanders on piano and bloch flute, Houston Symphony’s upright string bassist Dr. Lex Valk, Dr. Carl Lott on drums and special guest artists each week from around the world.

Meet & Greet THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. spent some time meeting, greeting and supporting jazz in Atlanta, Georgia in July. What a wonderful weekend of musical bliss! We had an opportunity to experience jazz influences and music in Atlanta that contributes to the pulse of the jazz in the city. The explosive and entertaining saxophonist Dwan Bosman welcomed M.E.E. with open arms! We surprised him by showing up for his performance at the SkyBoxx Lounge, but you would have never known it because he never skipped a beat... introducing us to the crowd and welcoming us. Dwan Bosman is known as one of Atlanta's most talented jazz and gospel saxophonists.

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E. connected with Michael Lington in December 2010 and we have followed him through over 300 shows in 45 countries. He gave a stellar performance at our Jazzy Valentine event February 2011. He is one of the most popular and charismatic saxophonists on the contemporary jazz scene; Lington has performed for royalty and sold-out crowds around the world. This saxophonist has always been first-call for musical superstars. He's opened arena shows for Barry Manilow and recently spent 18 months on tour with Bolton as his special guest. The tour exposed Lington to a new audience and he has played in front of about 1 million people. One of the tour's many highlights for Lington was performing in London's famed Royal Albert Hall and also performing and meeting former President Bill Clinton at a special show at the Kuwait Embassy. Lington has been touring the world this year in promotion of Pure, and when not recording music or performing, he manages his own cigar company, Michael Lington Cigars. He also writes a column about cigars for Wine and Jazz magazine.

THE JAZZ IN M.E.E.. landed in the Alamo City to cover the San Antonio Summer Art & Jazz Festival and the blazing heat could not keep us away!

Also known as SAS Fest (San Antonio Summer Festival) and Jazz Fest S. A. (Jazz Festival of San Antonio), this 3-day event is held on the first full weekend of June. SAS Fest features 17 great jazz concerts, an arts and crafts Fair and delicious Texas cuisine. The San Antonio Summer Art & Jazz Festival celebrated its 10th year of presenting great fun and entertainment for the whole family. The event was held at Crockett Park, 1300 North Main Ave in San Antonio, and admission was FREE! The lineup was packed with talent and the crowd embraced every musical note. Artist Olivia Villanueva's painting was selected to grace this year’s SAS Fest poster. Proceeds from this festival help to support children from homeless shelters in the San Antonio area. All types of jazz were showcased: straight ahead, contemporary, smooth and Latin. We were able to meet up with some new and old jazzy friends. Ken Slavin gave us a traditional jazz jolt
during his lively brunch performance and was also honored with the Life Time Achievement Award for his musical contributions in San Antonio. Stephen Richard's powerful performance had the crowd hyped and ready to dance. Dean James is not a stranger to this festival and the crowd is always excited about his high energy and dynamic show. Tom Braxton had the crowd eating out of his sax with his eloquent and sexy display of musical grace. Michael Lington was the headliner on day two and in typical Lington fashion, he brought Hollywood to San Antonio with his Beverly Hills glitz. You have to witness him to believe it, but his sound takes you to a place of happiness. He gave us a breathtaking rendition of the National Anthem that gave us chills! e reached out to JaZz in P!nk because of the wonderful accomplishments and strives they have made in jazz individually and collectively. JaZz in P!nk is an all-star female ensemble of musical women in jazz that projects talent, beauty, power and femininity as they embrace the stage! Their mission is to promote women in jazz, by providing live performance opportunities and showcasing each other’s music. We had an opportunity for a private meeting to get to know more about this talented group of ladies before their concert in Austin, Texas on April 14, 2012.
Today, Gail is one of the most phenomenal jazz pianists this world has to offer. She is known by her musical friends and family as the talented beautiful woman with the million-dollar smile, warm personality and heart of gold. As she rode down the glass elevators to meet me in the hotel lobby, I could only smile because she was just that...beautiful! She wore an amazing pink outfit that flowed behind her as she walked and grabbed the attention of many. Then there was the million-dollar smile; it greeted and welcomed me into her story. She was gracious, friendly, engaging and upbeat. You would have never known that she had lost her beloved son Aaron just two days before this interview. We offered to cancel our meeting, but she would not entertain it. It was more important to her that we were able to get all of the necessary information and pictures that we needed to support our magazine.

The vivacious group encompasses a wealth of musical talent from all over the U.S., but the creation of this super woman group is none other than Philly’s 1st Lady of Smooth Jazz, Gail Jhonson. Born and raised in the city of Philadelphia, Gail Denise Jhonson began piano lessons in elementary school at age 10. Proving to be a gifted student she advanced quickly and at age 14, played her first gigs on the organ with numerous local funk and R&B bands. By the time she was 18, her musical pursuit led her to enroll into Berklee College of Music where she received a B.A. in Composition. Returning home as a jazz
pianist, Gail performed with several jazz bands and other popular Philadelphia artists. She left Germantown in 1985, with her keyboard strapped on and landed an audition with Morris Day of the Time. She eventually moved to Los Angeles to make her dream career come true and the rest is history.

I was extremely impressed with her amazing strength and resilience during this difficult time. She wanted the show to go on and she did not want her fans to be disappointed on stage or in print. With a heavy heart and teary inner demeanor I proceeded with the interview. To get us back in our interview frame of mind, we spent time chatting about our jazz connections and how we could work together to support this art form. The passion of this topic brought us directly to our first question. What was your first experience with music? Growing up in Philadelphia everybody was into music. When you walk down the street, you passed someone’s house and they were practicing or rehearsing for something. Our family had a very rich musical background… during high school all of us played music, so we would pass each other on the weekend in our redesigned busses. All of the groups around town had their own little detailed busses and we would make posters and put them on the side of the bus. We would include where we were going and the name our band. Natural Experience was the name of our band.
How do you want to be remembered? I would like to be remembered as an artist that could keep it together musically and spiritually. I like to have a lot of fun and a lot of laughs. People will remember me for my jokes and good music. I hope they will pick one of my songs as their favorite.
Did you fall in love with Jazz? Yes I did! I fell hard, but...not until I got to Berklee and was exposed to Duke Ellington, Ramsey Lewis, Coltrane and my mentor, the late James Williams. I was then head over heels! What is your opinion on jazz today? Jazz is wide open. There are so many young people getting involved now. I’m really glad about that. My daughter is on her way to Berklee College of Music. She received a four-year scholarship and she is so talented. I contribute to the jazz of tomorrow by teaching. I teach high school, 10th grade and 11th grade. In fact, we had a workshop today. I feel good giving back to students because you don’t want all your hard work to just stop with you. Your music will live on if you teach it and share it with our youth. Is there anything else you would like us to know? Yes. I want you to know that I had an amazing son. He was a great person and had so much promise. He was a fine producer and artist, penned VEIN! He had an ear for music and he would let me hear tracks that he did and they were really good. He would always wow me. I think he just had enough. He had a troubled life. Not that he was in trouble, but emotionally and spiritually. I think something was missing here for him. He lost a lot of his friends at a young age. He asked, “Mom why are all my friends dying?” We love him dearly and he will be missed. REST IN PEACE AARON. In past years Gail has performed with Morris Day, Bobby Womack, Pink, Norman Brown, Vanessa Williams, Bobby Lyle/featuring Mindi Abair, Dave Koz, Jermaine Jackson and Sheila E. With early influences of Duke Ellington and Herbie Hancock and later Stevie Wonder and Joe Sample, Gail has shared the stage with Ray Parker Jr. Vesta, Howard Hewitt, Brian Culbertson, OC Smith, Paul Jackson Jr., Pamela Williams, Phil Perry and yes, Milli Vanilli. Her various television performances include: BET on Jazz, MTV, Lou Rawls/Parade of Stars, Soul Train, The Tonight Show and numerous video performances.

Why did you create JaZz in P!nk? I experienced growing up with Nina Simone, Carole King and Aretha Franklin. They played piano and sang, but they were not instrumentalists. I knew there had to be other women out there doing what I was doing. I have been on the road 20 years, and I could count on my hand how many women I would see out there playing music. So when I ran into Nichelle N’Degechello, I wanted to do more. Nichelle played bass and I had never seen a woman play bass before so I was really impressed. I started to seek out and learn about other female musicians like Sherry Mitchell with Pieces of a Dream, homegirl Rochelle Farrell, the genius Karen Briggs and eventually flautist Althea Rene that I met on the Smooth Jazz Cruise. I wanted to start and carry on the legendary JaZz in P!nk to let people know that women are still under-represented in jazz. I want to let the world know what we do. When guys are on their way to practice, we are too. When the guys are practicing, we are too. When the guys are hauling and carrying heavy equipment after a gig, we are doing the same thing.
What’s on your life’s bucket list? I’m also an author and I would like to do more writing. I have other musical literary projects that I would like to publish. Funk Keyboards, Dictionary of Keyboard Grooves and Jazzy Keyboard Vol.1 is already on the shelves, so I need to do Vol. II. I also aspire to write for film and TV. This year I scored a gospel play OverCome OverJoyed, produced by CharRo Productions, and also completed a score for Saving Grace the movie by Dennis Rowe Productions. I would love to take it from the stage to live theater... Broadway!!!!!

In addition, she did an appearance on the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) with Prophet Kim Clement. Her upcoming debut CD, This is my Life, is an instrumental autobiography that combines her musical experiences throughout her career while staying true to her first loves, jazz and neo-soul.

Mariea Antoinette ~ Harp Mariea Antoinette’s celebrated musical career of stunning performances as the principle harpist for the Los Angeles Southeast Symphony Orchestra, the jazz band JazZ in P!nk, and her solo performance and recording career have established her as one of the most exciting and gifted harpists today. Audiences are enchanted by Ms. Antoinette’s classy and elegant performances. Whether she is on stage performing at premier jazz festivals or strolling through the venue with her state-of-the-art portable electric harp, a special kind of magic is experienced by everyone as she shares her musical talents and love and appreciation of music.
Danielle “Pockett” Brown ~ Drums Pockett Brown was born to a family of professional gospel musicians. Her mother a pianist, singer and vocalist; father a bassist and songwriter; brother a organist, pianist, singer, virtuoso; and sister vocalist and songwriter, so it was only natural for Brown to have music in her blood as well. She started playing drums for church at the age of seven and began singing and directing choirs at the age of 12. Though gospel music is Brown’s foundation as a musician, her father’s love for fusion and smooth jazz was adopted as well. Today she plays many different styles of music. “Understanding the importance of staying ‘in the pocket’ as well as remaining versatile are definitely the keys to staying in demand…” Her resume includes everything from gospel to jazz to soul to rock to hip-hop and funk. She is endorsed by Vic Firth, the world’s most respected drumstick company.
Brown is currently working on her debut album, which promises to be as free and versatile as she is. Darlene Moreno ~ Guitar Darlene came onto the scene in 1995 with the Barry White He was touring internationally with his hot new CD The Icon Is Love, and celebrating his huge hit single “Practice What You Preach”, and his hit with El DeBarge “Secret Garden” by the great Quincy Jones. Darlene became a seasoned veteran with the double Grammy winning artist and his orchestra, touring with him for more than seven years and doing shows like Ally McBeal and Arby’s restaurant commercials. While continuing to work with Mr. White she had the opportunity to work with some of the hottest platinum, double platinum, and Grammy winning artists and producers in pop and urban music such as vocalists Mya and Tevin Campbell. She wrote and produced with vocalist Jon B on his CD entitled Jon B’s Greatest Hits-Are U Still Down. Althea René ~ Flute This unparalleled artist, born December 25th in Detroit, Michigan, began her musical career at age four as a classical flautist. She studied classical music while attending Howard University in Washington D.C. and later gained further musical inspiration from the accomplishments of Yusef Lateef, Ian Anderson, and Dave Valentine. She has since developed her own creative style. Althea René has worked more than 10 years as a Wayne County Deputy Sheriff (Detroit, Michigan). Today, Ms. René is a full-time performing/recording artist and is regarded among many as one of the nation’s most exciting solo improvisational flautists. hocolate Summer Night delivered an exciting poetic and musical experience that had everyone captivated. This classy upscale cast of artists offered many facets of entertainment and fulfillment on various levels. Their performances left everyone wanting more! “When is the next one?” Everyone wanted to know… Wayne Ashley, Tenor Flavor, warmed up the crowd with his tenor perfection during his opening performance. Jordan Donald, Saxy Flavor, rocked the house with his slamming and unique Roger and Zapp medley. Wendy Taylor, Idol Flavor, brought the house down with her powerful performance of “Proud Mary”. The crowd stood up in triumph after her riveting display. What a class act! Punkin from Pluto, Funky Flavor, kept the audience guessing with her multi-talented ability - singing, hosting and using her poetic gift of spoken word - to drive the pace of the show. She is the ultimate entertainer. They never saw Pluto coming! Andre Pitre, Grown and Sexy Flavor, had the ladies up in arms with his sexy performance. He connected with the crowd with his high energy and interactive performance. Emmy Award winning poet Hank Stewart had the entire room on their feet as they embraced him and his poetic essence during his 2nd Houston Chocolate Summer Night performance. Hank’s performance is always memorable...we can never get enough of IT or Chocolate!!

I was inspired to create this annual event after experiencing a Hank Stewart performance during a trip to Atlanta in 2009. Amazing was an understatement! All I could think about was sharing him with Houston.
