Using Laughter as Medicine There are thousands of medicines ranging from the modern medicines to those medicines that are not necessarily commonplace, hence the name alternative medicine. The question arises around the idea of what exactly "medicine" is. The Merriam–Webster dictionary defines medicine as "the science that deals with preventing, curing, and treating diseases". So with this vague definition what should be considered medicine? I say that laughter is definitely a medicine because of its ability to promote health in one 's body but, as any medicine, it has only certain applications that it can be used to prevent, cure, or treat an ailment. Laughter is the best medicine when used in the correct situation but, it is also great as a complementary medicine by being used alongside of other treatments. Before I begin backing up my point I would like explain how laughter has been entwined in my life and how important laughing is to our wellbeing. My grandfather, Larry Ahner, taught me from a very young age to find the humor where it was most needed. With three out of four adults claiming to laugh four or more times a day (Polaroid Corp, 2004) it is something that is obviously easy to do, and of which the answer to the time old question of whether or not it is the best medicine, might surprise many skeptics out there.
To laugh is defined as: "to express certain emotions, especially mirth or delight, by a series of spontaneous, usually unarticulated sounds often accompanied by corresponding facial and bodily movements" (Dictionary, 2013). In 2016, there will be an estimated 1,685,210 new cancer cases diagnosed according to the American Cancer Society. That is roughly 1 in every 190 Americans who do not have cancer already. In 2014 the American Cancer Society estimated that Americans spent $88.7 billion dollars on cancer treatments. If there are so many cancer patients and so much money spent then why are patients not getting the best treatment for their cancer? In 2014 I was very close with a family who contributed to that estimated $88.7 billion and for treatments that did not work. Not all patients are equal and so not all treatments should be. Alternative medicines are being found to be the most effective treatment for some patients. In 2014 I lost my closest friend and boyfriend to cancer. In his last months, he was using alternative treatments and herbal medicine. These treatments had the best possible results for him. He was able to eat normally and function without the stifling side effects of the old chemo treatments. By the time he had started the new treatment his cancer had unfortunately, progressed beyond recovery. However the new medicine gave him almost two more months than what doctors thought he would have. Having that time to make more memories, to just be with him and his family was amazing! The only work that was done to the toilets was a brush ran along the bowls once or twice apiece and some Clorox splashed around inside of them. After he finished, he said, "That's clean enough. Maybe not for some people, but myself I plan to piss in 'em, not eat lunch out of 'em" (138). Nurse Ratched went to inspect McMurphy's work and exclaimed, "Why, this is an outrage...an outrage..." (138) at every bowl she saw. McMurphy replied, "No; that's a toilet bowl...a toilet bowl" (138). Through this exclamation Mr. McMurphy makes fun of Mrs. Ratched's choice of words to get over the fact that he did, indeed, do a bad job on the toilets.
