OOTA wishes to announce our Spilt Ink Competition for 2014. This year we have decided to include two categories, poetry and the short story. The competition is for members only and entries are now called for with our closing date as 31st August, 2014 (postmarked as that date accepted). Plenty of time to work on your lines and narrative. The competition will have a separate judge for each category and members are advised to adhere to the guidelines, otherwise your entry might not be accepted. We have experienced in the past that strict adherence to literary competition rules and guidelines has either been overlooked or completely ignored by certain writers. It is also a misnomer to think that competition committees are too busy, not astute enough, or not fully qualified to notice that certain works have previously won competition prizes, or have been previously published. We here at OOTA, are very aware of this problem, and keep a diligent outlook for this form of practice. Also, In the light of recent plagiarism, we advise that if you are working on cento or collage poetry, you are strongly advised to include your sources/references at the bottom of the page (see poetry at Cordite for instruction). Likewise, for short story writers using a direct quote, it is best to reference this at the bottom of the work. Paraphrasing someone else’s work can be italicised, if you so wish, but not necessary. These forms of practice are the duties of the writer! Helen Hageman, Ed.

Beyond his sight a swamp harrier quarters the fringes, scoping the undulations of sedge and reeds. Coots dive and emerge again at the opposite end of measure. A line drawn on water cannot be transcribed into chains, perches, miles; its equations are dismantled by the punting scull of webbed feet. ≈ (from Swamp: with permission from the author) Nandi’s book will be launched by John Mateer. Poetry lovers and guests will be in for a major treat – as per the Perth Writers Festival – not to be missed !
