You can never have a thin ray of esperance it doesn’t wait and wish but leaps to meet you halfway a glimpse of beach after the endless walls of the bight a speck of gold that begins the mining of hazardous ports tenuous crops and here behind the wince of the bay so close they seem to drink the salt shallows towering rows of Norfolk Island pines determined bristling green out of dark interiors. Someone planted these who would never see limbs like spokes laddering the central masts or stand beside grey peeling trunks looking up into this other kind of mountain resilient to wind-light sun-light. Passing through this town that floats on sand walking the snowy beaches lapped by the cold clear bracelet that’s there then not there around our ankles this is what we give each other this is what we learn to arrive at the ends of the earth with everything falling away behind with everything falling away ahead and name it esperance.
