POEM OF THE WEEK The Astronomer’s Wife We were in this together my starry eyes and naming of stars eyes always the focus of his telescope I would lead him to Virgo he showed me the Pole Star (he doesn’t profess a star sign) on a clear night we could see Andromeda and beyond at first I would sit next to him his long telescope the motes from his eyes reaching out but the ache of it: I sat behind, eventually I came in, for the cold he is out there now, counting moons his white telescope in distant light he will come home, come in to me hard with the frost of Europa I imagine I am in Delphinus one day he will see me he will note me down name me —Dick Alderson
