Nurturing thriving, prosperous communities By any measure, Western Reserve Land Conservancy is now deemed to be one of our nation’s great conservation organizations. We are especially excited to share our results with all of you because you make all of our good work possible. And yet we do not wish to tell our story through metrics that are focused on our results, as important as they are to our region (we will share some of our milestones with you, of course). Instead, our team has pulled together eight compelling stories that collectively paint the full picture of our service to our cherished region. When our work is done our region will be filled with thriving,
prosperous communities nourished by vibrant natural areas, working farms and healthy cities. And we will accomplish this by providing the people of our region with essential natural assets through land conservation and restoration. In 2006, we merged eight little land conservancies to form the current Western Reserve Land Conservancy. Since then we have grown to become a visionary leader and a catalyst for measurable, tangible progress in land conservation and restoration. In the pages that follow, you will read about this progress, which has made us the largest conservation organization in Ohio. And yet, beyond the acres and the deals, the hallmark of our work is deep collaboration in which we respect the diversity of our partners… from creating preserves with Lorain Metro Parks to working with the distressed neighborhoods that surround the old Saint Luke’s hospital near Shaker Square in Cleveland. We think
you will be surprised by the diversity of work, of places, and of people that is revealed in the stories within this report. Please take some time to read through our entire annual report because it is a designed as a narrative about our region; curl up with a cup of tea and lose yourself in the majesty of the Crowell Hilaka Recreation Area, in the transcendent power of our Reforest our City program, in the wilderness of north Trumbull County, in the agricultural legacy of Lonesome Pine Farm, in the expansive collaboration to restore the Grand River’s habitat, and in the multigenerational conservation joy of the Holland family in Medina. Our work is both strategic and holistic; uniquely, we address the causes of urban sprawl in our cities, and we attend to the effects by identifying, conserving and restoring essential natural assets that are threatened by poorly planned development. In the end, our work – from the denuded streets of downtown Cleveland to the verdant hills of the Chagrin Valley – boils down to this: we nourish and support healthy communities. We make the world a better place. All of our work is made possible by your support. Thank you for being our partner and for nurturing us so that we can nurture our region. With our gratitude,
Rich Cochran and Betsy Juliano

Perseverance and partnership: protecting Camp Crowell Hilaka The creation and permanent protection of the Crowell Hilaka Recreation Area is a story of perseverance, passion, strategy and community conservation. Originally purchased and farmed by the Oviatt family in 1831, inventor James B. Kirby bought the property in 1919. He built his estate on the 336-acre parcel which included a mill and waterwheel that generated electric power for his lab and workshop; a house that was originally airconditioned by diverting spring water to flow over its roof; and a hall that was built on enormous trolley springs which bounced as people danced. Kirby sold the land to the Cleveland Girl Scouts in 1937. For more than 70 years, thousands of girls camped at Crowell Hilaka and enjoyed the property’s two lakes, several headwater streams, mature forest, wetlands and miles of hiking trails. When the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GSNEO) announced the closing of Camp Crowell Hilaka in 2011, serious concerns arose about its impending sale. Scouts, neighbors, and community leaders feared the land would be sold to a developer, timbered or both. Given the significant conservation value of the property, the Land Conservancy entered into a purchase and sale agreement with GSNEO to acquire the property in mid-2012. For the next year, the Land Conservancy searched for an owner aligned with its preservation mission with little success. No legitimate partner emerged, forcing the Land Conservancy to request an extension of the purchase agreement and to reevaluate its conservation strategy. In the spring of 2014, a working group was formed that included members of representatives from the Land Conservancy, Richfield Township, the Village of Richfield, the Buckeye Trail Association, Friends of Crowell Hilaka, the Richfield Historical Society and Summit County 66
Council. After much deliberation, it was determined that forming a new joint recreation district and putting a bond and tax levy on the November ballot would provide the best chance for success. Work began immediately. The Village of Richfield and Richfield Township passed resolutions to form the Richfield Joint Recreation District (RJRD) in mid-July. Just a few short weeks later, the RJRD was able to submit the necessary documents in order to get a bond and levy on the ballot. During September and October, the Land Conservancy worked with a newly formed campaign committee to promote the ballot issues and hold open houses which were attended by hundreds of people each weekend. In November 2014, voters in the Village of Richfield and Richfield Township overwhelmingly approved the ballot measures. After the resounding vote of support from the community, the Land Conservancy leveraged its extensive public funding experience to help the RJRD explore financing options. The Land Conservancy applied for an approximately $1.1 million Clean Ohio grant on behalf of the RJRD which was ultimately approved by the local NRAC District 8 committee and the Ohio Public Works Commission. With the final funding secured, Western Reserve Land Conservancy turned over management of the newly established Crowell Hilaka Recreation Area to the RJRD in July 2015. At the ceremony, RJRD Board Chair Floyd Ostrowski shared, “I am so proud to be part of this community and a member of this board, which has accomplished so much in such a short amount of time. Our mission to preserve, conserve and recreate will not just be for this generation but for future generations.” Crowell Hilaka Recreation Area opened to the public in August 2015. The Land Conservancy now holds a conservation easement on the property, permanently protecting its rich ecological and historic heritage. “Even when the conservation of Crowell Hilaka seemed like the longest of longshots, we strategized with our partners to protect this extraordinary property,” said Joe Leslie, Director of Acquisitions for the Land Conservancy. “It’s a truly remarkable story for all involved and the people of Richfield should be congratulated for making it happen.”
Lorain County Metro Parks focuses on connectivity Connectivity is a major theme for Lorain County Metro Parks’ director James Ziemnik. “We have incredible natural resources throughout Lorain County and our job is to help folks embrace what we have,” explained the park district director. “We have beautiful land and we have beautiful water resources – from the Black and Vermilion rivers to the Great Lake in our front yard. We are trying to connect people to our parks, within the parks, and find other ways to make our parks accessible for folks to get out and enjoy nature.” Ziemnik pointed out that building these physical connections for residents also requires building connections with organizations like Western Reserve Land Conservancy. “Jim is one of those directors quick to call the Land Conservancy and share land protection opportunities,” shared Keith McClintock, vice president of conservation for Western Reserve Land Conservancy. “He finds ways in which our organization can complement the work of his staff and maximize state and federal grant money for projects.” The park district partnered with the Land Conservancy to purchase the former Royal Oaks Golf Club in the village of Grafton. The project connected two separate parcels of the Metro Park’s Indian Hollow Reservation and expanded the reservation’s overall size to 726 acres. The property, located in the Black River watershed, provides important natural habitat for plants, animals, and a number of bird species including juvenile bald eagles, a fledgling great horned owl as well as native and migratory birds. The park also provides recreation opportunities to the community. Before the park’s official opening in September 2015, over 12,000 visitors made use of the two and a half miles of hiking trails, three fishing ponds, and half-mile dedicated fitness loop within Indian Hollow Reservation. Lorain County Metro Parks first partnered with the Land Conservancy in 2007 to preserve the Firelands’ Scout Camp. In
88
July 2014, the organizations worked together to permanently protect a 62-acre property adjacent to the Cassell Reservation and in October 2015, a 13-acre property adjacent to the district’s Hollstein Reservation. These projects have expanded public parks and preserves, while protecting diverse wildlife habitat. “It’s all right here,” Ziemnik said using a Wizard of Oz analogy to describe the park system which now covers nearly 10,000 acres. “You need not look any farther than your own back yard to pursue your heart’s desire.”
“We all need nature as much as we need fresh air to breathe. What if there were no places like the parks where children and families could go free of charge, to play, discover, and explore their natural world? We are honored and privileged to work with Lorain County Metro Parks and Western Reserve Land Conservancy to find ways to enrich the community and future generations.” – Linda Styer, senior program officer at Lorain County Community Foundation.
Outdoor enthusiasts give back to the land As president of the Ashtabula County Wildlife Conservation League and Sheffield Beagle Club, lifelong conservationist, Dale Sunderlin, Jr., was instrumental in initiating and working with the Land Conservancy to permanently protect the club owned properties, totaling 236 acres, in 2014. Dale, and his wife, Janie, did not stop there. This year, the avid outdoor enthusiasts worked with the Land Conservancy to place a conservation easement on their own family’s 52-acre property in Mesopotamia Township, located in northern Trumbull County. This property is almost entirely forested and contains nearly 50 acres of wetlands and approximately 1,200 linear feet along the state designated Scenic and Wild Grand River. The Sunderlin’s property is located within a growing corridor of permanently preserved properties supporting high quality natural habitats. Thousands of acres in an area known as the Grand River Lowlands have been protected by conservation partners including the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Trumbull MetroParks, The Nature Conservancy and the Land Conservancy. “It’s amazing to see the conservation mosaic coming together in the Grand River Lowlands.” said Brett Rodstrom, the Land
10
Conservancy’s vice president of eastern field operations. “It’s a testament to the dedication and passion of dozens of organizations and landowners focusing on both public and private conservation projects.” Walking along the trails laid with his father, Dale Sunderlin, Jr. shared, “I thank my dad every day for instilling in me a passion for the great outdoors.” Dale’s family, as he put it, “was one of the driving forces to put a conservation easement on our property and protect it even after I’m gone.” The Land Conservancy and its partners secured federal funding for the purchase of the conservation easement through a grant from the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA), distributed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and administered by Ducks Unlimited. NAWCA was passed, in part, to support activities under the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, an international agreement that provides a strategy for the long-term protection of wetlands and associated habitats needed by waterfowl and other migratory birds in North America. The Sunderlin’s property provides the family with more than hunting and fishing opportunities. According to Dale, spending time on the property brought him closer to his wife, Janie, and his father, Dale Sunderlin, Sr. “This land gave us so much over the last twenty years,” Janie explained. “Placing a conservation easement is our way of giving back to the land.”
Talking trees: Reforest Our City launches in Cleveland Trees save energy, reduce stormwater runoff, enhance property values, improve water quality and make our neighborhoods more attractive. But in many urban and suburban communities, tree canopies are dwindling – the city of Cleveland loses approximately 97 acres of canopy each year. Western Reserve Land Conservancy launched Reforest Our City to reverse the trend. During its inaugural year, the Land Conservancy planted over 1,800 trees in Cleveland neighborhoods. Trees were planted by a host of individual volunteers, ages 8 to 80, and community partners including schools, block clubs and community development corporations. In addition to engaging and training individual volunteers, the Land Conservancy has plugged corporate volunteer groups into its reforestation efforts. Employees from ArborWear planted a grove of trees alongside students and community members at Saint Luke’s Manor in honor of late Land Conservancy Board Chair Mary Arter Weber. Eaton Corporation employees spent time planting at a community orchard in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood and Alcoa employees planted more than 300 trees as part of a stream restoration along Mill Creek. The Reforest Our City grant program, administered by the Land Conservancy, provides funding to community groups and block 12
clubs to plant trees in their neighborhood. These grants have transformed community spaces, like EcoVillage Gateway Park outside of the West 65th RTA Rapid Station in Cleveland’s Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. But planting is not the only facet of the Reforest Our City program. The Land Conservancy partnered with Holden Arboretum/Cleveland Botanical Gardens to develop the Sherwick Tree Steward Training program, which educates community members on the benefits of trees and trains them to maintain existing and newly planted trees. Workshops address topics including tree biology and identification, pruning, planting, root and soil care, urban tree stress, and community planting projects. Over 200 individuals attended training sessions, generously supported by the Sherwick Fund, conducted by the Land Conservancy’s Colby Sattler and Holden Arboretum’s Chad Clink, both certified arborists, in the program’s inaugural year. Reforest Our City activities are an important part of the larger community-wide collaboration to rebuild the urban forest through partnership. The Land Conservancy and Holden Arboretum/Cleveland Botanical Gardens partnered with the City of Cleveland Office of Sustainability, LAND studio, Cleveland Neighborhood Progress and Davey Resource Group to release the guiding document for this collaboration, the Cleveland Tree Plan, in October 2015. “We’re on the map regionally, and to a degree nationally, for our reforestation efforts,” shared Sattler. “The fact that folks are now regularly talking about Cleveland’s tree canopy speaks to the fact that there is a lot of interest in rebuilding Cleveland as the Forest City.”
Oberlin Great South Woods protected
The Land Conservancy acquired a 63-acre portion of what is known as Oberlin Great South Woods with the intent of creating a nature preserve on the property. The parcel, which has forests, wetlands and a sedge meadow, as well as several rare species of birds, reptiles and amphibians, was targeted for conservation for more than a decade.
Central Huron County farmland preserved for generations to come
Following conversations with several landowners who have donated conservation easements to the Land Conservancy, Rich Smith decided to first preserve a 332-acre tract of land that has been farmed by his family for three generations. The property produces various rotations of corn, soybeans and wheat as part of a larger grain farm operation by Rich and his two sons spanning hundreds of acres. The property also contains three woodlots, nearly a half-mile of tributaries to the Huron River and prime farmland soils.
Former landfill to become part of green corridor
The Land Conservancy acquired a 28-acre former landfill in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood and plans to make it part of a growing green corridor that includes the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Brookside Reservation and the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.

Fifth anniversary of Haley’s Run Stream Restoration
The Serves family donated four vacant residential lots totaling 0.25 acres to the Land Conservancy, expanding the South Akron Greenway project which includes Haley’s Run, Adam’s Run, and a hoped-for future connector to the Little Cuyahoga River. The addition of this land is significant as the Land Conservancy worked closely with Lockheed Martin Corp. on the acquisition of parcels for the Haley’s Run Stream Restoration and Trail. The two organizations celebrated the fifth anniversary of the completion of this project with a bioblitz in July 2015.
Conservancies, landowners team up to preserve 92 acres in Gates Mills
A partnership between Gates Mills Land Conservancy and Western Reserve Land Conservancy, plus donations from landowners Evelyn Newell and Hickory Nut Farm, LLC, permanently protected the 92-acre Sherman Road Preserve. The property has grasslands, hardwood forest and a primary headwater stream that flows directly into the State Scenic Chagrin River. The land conservancies began work on this project in 2008.
Trumbull County grain farm protects additional land
This year, the W.I. Miller and Sons grain farm permanently preserved another 476 acres of farmland, raising the total acreage protected by the family business to 3,179 acres. The economy of northern Trumbull County depends on agriculture; the landprotection efforts by the Miller family will keep the land in agricultural use, thus supporting the local economy.
Protected Tinker’s Creek corridor continues to grow
The Land Conservancy worked with several partners on separate projects to protect land along Tinker’s Creek, the largest tributary of the Cuyahoga River. · The Land Conservancy partnered with the City of Bedford Heights to create a new 23-acre passive park abutting the southern boundary of the city’s Lucille Reed Park. The Solon Road Preserve has two ravines running from north to south; the eastern ravine contains 885 linear feet of a direct tributary to Tinker’s Creek. · The Village of Glenwillow and the Land Conservancy partnered to create a new 17.5-acre park and protect a half-mile of Tinker’s Creek, adjacent to Cleveland Metroparks Bedford Reservation. · A 25-acre nature preserve was created and an additional 27 acres was protected in Twinsburg Township through a partnership between Summit Metro Parks and the Land Conservancy. The tracts include 2,556 linear feet of Tinker’s Creek, 1,079 linear feet of unnamed tributary streams, and many acres of wetland and floodplain that holds and filters rainwater, helping improve water quality.
First property permanently protected in Jefferson County
Beverly Christen granted a conservation easement permanently protecting her 134-acre farm in the Yellow Creek valley, 20 miles northwest of Steubenville. The Christen farm is locally known as the location of Standing Rock, the site of a huge boulder that fell thousands of years ago into the Yellow Creek channel. Standing Rock has a long history dating back to precolonial Native Americans; several Midwest tribes used it as a meeting place. The stream is also designated as an Exceptional Warmwater Habitat and contains one of the last few populations of the Eastern Hellbender – a large salamander – in southeastern Ohio. 1515
Mother and daughter protect largest remaining farm in Copley Sally Gamauf’s father used to sit in his chair and look out over the family farm in the evening. Gamauf recounts, “In one place, there is a single pine in the middle of the field, all by itself. My dad would say, ‘That’s a lonesome pine.’ The name stuck.” Lonesome Pine Farm, a 119-acre tract in western Summit County, was been permanently preserved with a conservation easement granted to Western Reserve Land Conservancy by owners Sally Gamauf and her daughter, Darcy Brandel. The farm, which has been in the family for 92 years, is on Cleveland-Massillon Road, about a half-mile south of Copley Circle. “Darcy and I wanted to see it remain farmland forever,” said Gamauf, a retired University of Akron psychologist and former member of the Land Conservancy’s Medina Summit Chapter. “We also wanted to preserve the farm in honor of my father and my grandparents.” Gamauf’s grandparents purchased the land in 1923 and farmed it their entire lives. For the past 25 years, Lonesome Pine has been an organic farm and its prime agricultural soils produce hay, corn, soybeans and sunflowers. The farm also has two separate woodlots on the southern portion of the property.
Each member of the family seems to have a favorite place on the farm. Gamauf’s father was drawn to the lonesome pine, Gamauf to a small tributary and rock quarry in one of the wooded lots, and Brandel to an area in between. Gamauf attributes her connection to the land to her father. “My dad was an amazing person – kind and thoughtful and caring. He instilled an appreciation to be kind and to try to save the damn world.” With the recent sale and residential development of a farm off state Route 18, Lonesome Pine is now the largest remaining farm in Copley Township. The property is less than two miles from two other Land Conservancy conservation easements totaling 73 acres. “We are extremely grateful to Sally and Darcy for preserving this beautiful farm, particularly in a community that has seen so much growth and development,” said Andy McDowell, vice president of western field operations for the Land Conservancy. Sally Gamauf said it was very much a decision she and her daughter made together to permanently preserve the property. She said even though her daughter is now an English professor at Marygrove College in Detroit, “Darcy is really a farm girl gone to the city. She knows how to work the ground, she knows farming.”
Andy McDowell (right) presents Sally Gamuaf (center) and Darcy Brandel (left) with the 2015 Grimm Family Conservation Medal, one of the Land Conservancy’s highest honors. The medal recognizes a conservationminded landowner with “a deep and abiding passion for our mission, who has preserved land in a charitable manner, who views land as a precious resource and not as a commodity, and who has forgone significant financial value to preserve land.”

Conservation partners restore critical Grand River habitat The emergence of spring wildflowers is a welcome sight to many after a long winter, but the white trillium blooming along the banks of the Grand River was a welcomed sight for The Nature Conservancy’s Karen Adair – one that illustrates the power of partnerships in advancing conservation. The trillium, Ohio’s state wildflower, was blooming on floodplain that just one year earlier was choked by Japanese knotweed, an aggressive invasive plant known to grow in dense thickets reaching up to ten feet in height. By rapidly reproducing and spreading, invasive plants can harm native plant species, degrade wildlife habitat, increase the risk of soil erosion and flooding and impair the recreational use of wetlands and shoreline. These aggressive nonnative plant species cause major changes to the areas where they become established, harming our region’s natural heritage. For that reason, combating invasive species was listed as one of the five focus areas of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI),
a federal investment program launched in 2010 to accelerate protection and restoration efforts across the Great Lakes. Under Adair’s leadership, The Nature Conservancy partnered with Western Reserve Land Conservancy, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Geauga Park District, Lake Metroparks and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources - Division of Wildlife to apply for the first round of GLRI funds in 2010. Funding was awarded and work began to combat invasive plants on partneridentified properties in the Grand River watershed. The Nature Conservancy’s seasonal staff members navigated and treated 800 acres reducing invasive plant species like Phragmites (common reed), purple loosestrife, reed canary grass and garlic mustard. “GLRI was an absolute game changer,” Adair explained. “It gave The Nature Conservancy and our partners the support to do the work we’ve dreamed of from the headwaters of the Grand River to its lower stretches. We were empowered to work at a much larger scale and continue those efforts today.”
In 2014, The Nature Conservancy was awarded a second phase GLRI grant to work with private landowners to control invasive plants on 500 acres of land adjacent to the Grand River and its tributaries, including wetlands, with no prior invasive species management. Western Reserve Land Conservancy’s relationships with landowners in the Grand River watershed provided critical connections with landowners throughout the watershed, which will help ensure success of the project upon its completion in 2016.
A trillium blooms on floodplain in the Grand River lowlands that just one year earlier was choked by Japanese knotweed.

“I feel very fortunate to work in such a strong conservation community.” emphasized Adair. “It’s not just about protecting, managing and restoring land, but also about cooperating and working together across the watershed. Our collective efforts help prevent the need for serious, resource-intensive fixes in the future and will keep the Grand River beautiful and healthy for generations to come.”
Cleaning and greening to revitalize Cleveland neighborhoods “The real heroes of the foreclosure crisis,” explained Jay Westbrook, special project manager for Western Reserve Land Conservancy’s urban program, Thriving Communities, “are the residents with an empty side lot next to their property, a vacant boarded up house on the other side, and a house that’s abandoned and open across the street. These residents get up in the morning, go to work, send their kids to school and confront these almost indescribable conditions every day. And yet they persist. They pay their taxes; they mow their yards; they fix the broken gutters and paint their homes. If they had done what the banks did, they would have packed everything into the trunk of their car and driven away. And fortunately for our city, they didn’t. They’re our first partner in the fight on blight.” With generous support from the Saint Luke’s Foundation, the Land Conservancy’s Thriving Communities staff members have worked for nearly two years on a comprehensive strategy to address blight in the neighborhoods served by the former Saint Luke’s Medical Center, including Mount Pleasant, Buckeye and Woodland Hills. This project effectively blends the Land Conservancy’s strengths with the revitalization strategies of the Foundation to begin the process of creating safer, healthier neighborhoods in which residents regain a sense of pride. The project began in 2014 with a comprehensive property survey to identify the vacant and abandoned structures that attract crime and lower property values. More than 1,072 structures – nearly 10% of the properties – in Cleveland’s Mount Pleasant, Buckeye and Woodland Hills neighborhoods, were identified as highly distressed – those houses ransacked and filled with trash, missing bricks or siding with broken and missing windows, or in danger of collapse. Demolition of blighted properties is known to help stabilize neighborhoods by restoring value to surrounding homes. While the Land Conservancy does not demolish houses, it does advocate for the removal of vacant and abandoned homes. This advocacy has proved significant in the Saint Luke’s neighborhood. At the conclusion of the neighborhood survey, project partners discovered more than half of the highly distressed 20
homes had not recently been inspected by the City of Cleveland. Neither citations nor condemnation orders – the first steps needed for demolition – had been issued. This prompted Thriving Communities to raise the issue with the City of Cleveland and the Cuyahoga Land Bank. Since providing the survey results, the city has inspected over 500 properties in the neighborhood. The Land Conservancy’s work with the Cuyahoga Land Bank led to more than 100 demolitions in the Saint Luke’s Neighborhood between March 2014 and May 2015. “Thriving Communities’ advocacy brought a sense of urgency to the work,” explained Nelson Beckford, Saint Luke’s Foundation senior program officer. The increase in demolition activity will result in opportunities for greening in the community, which Beckford adds, “are motivating community members to get involved and carry the work forward.” Greening strategies include an increased number of side yard lots and opportunities to work with city officials on the creation of parks and public green space. Connecting residents, community development corporations, block clubs and churches to this greening piece most excites Jacquie Gillon, community engagement specialist for the Land Conservancy’s Thriving Communities Institute. “I hope to empower these groups with the knowledge and resources they need to clean, green and improve their neighborhoods so that we can eventually step aside and watch the community thrive.”
“Likening the project to dental work: demolition is the root canal and greening is the smile. The face of the community starts to come back with property repurposing and the encouragement of long-term homeowners and stakeholders.” – Jay Westbrook
White Oak legacy society
Our own white oak is a symbol of both our cultural and natural heritage in the Western Reserve. The White Oak is a large tree, growing up to 100 feet tall, with a trunk up to four feet across. This tree provides cover, and food in the form of acorns, for many birds and small mammals, even in winter, since its leaves often stay on. White oaks sometime live for hundreds of years, which is why the name was chosen for the White Oak Legacy Society. By including the Land Conservancy in your estate plan, you become a member of our White Oak Legacy Society.

A lifelong conservation legacy Though J. Jeffery Holland and his wife, Marjorie Muirden, grew up in different parts of the country, they similarly experienced the hasty development of natural lands and working farms in their local communities. The “gobbling up” of land by developers in her Connecticut hometown, as Muiden described it, motivated her conservation ethic. Holland agreed. “There was a time in Medina history when forty acres of land were developed each day,” he emphasized, “Forty acres every day.” This prompted Holland to found the Medina County Land Conservancy in 1991. The organization later merged to become the Medina-Summit Land Conservancy, and finally merged with the Land Conservancy in 2006. Holland continues to serve on the Land Conservancy’s Board of Trustees and volunteers with the Medina-Summit chapter. Not surprisingly, Holland and Muirden placed a conservation easement on their approximately 100 acre property, Frog Hollow. The Wadsworth property features mature beechmaple and mixed hardwood forest, old pasture, wet meadow, streams and ponds. Portions of the streams flow between 15feet rock outcroppings where numerous small waterfalls can be found. The couple has fond memories of raising their four sons on the property, as well as providing homes to a number of rescue cats, dogs and horses. Holland and Muirden have further shown their support for land conservation by becoming members of the Land Conservancy’s White Oak Legacy Society. One of the first donations Holland ever made was to a land trust, and one of his last gifts will be as well. “You can donate to solve world issues like ending hunger and homelessness, but the problem never really goes away,” explained Holland, “When you preserve land, on the other hand, it’s permanent. That land is protected forever and what an amazing gift that is for future generations.”
