This community hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the year including the Wellesley Apple Butter & Cheese Festival. With a combined population of just over 10,500 it includes Bamberg, Crosshill, Hawkesville, Linwood, Heidelberg, St. Clements, Wallenstein and Wellesley settlement areas. Wellesley, St. Clements and Linwood are the township’s largest towns. The towns are mostly agricultural where locals still converse in Deitsch (a German dialect) and are delighted to sell their homemade sausages, maple syrup, shoo-fly pies, apple butter, cooked cheese, butter, bacon, local Mennonite furniture and even quilts right out of their shops, farms or homes. “Cycling is the new golf,” Waterloo Cycling Club president Alain Francq enthuses, noting that Waterloo Region is the perfect place to ride. What makes Waterloo Region a great place to cycle? RIDING IN THE COUNTRYSIDE Waterloo Region is one of the few places to see recreational and competitive cyclists riding alongside Old Order Mennonites and Amish cyclists. Riding for transportation more than pleasure, Mennonites and Amish have been cycling the roads of Waterloo Region for generations. Riding in Waterloo Region will take you through quaint villages, gentle river flats, through a historic covered bridge, and past Mennonite meeting houses or horse-drawn buggies. In 2014, a first-time event hit Kitchener that got the community all shook up, and set in motion musical reverberations that are going to recur on an annual basis. The community wasn’t sure what was coming when the Big Music Fest was announced for 2014. What arrived was a hugely popular festival of hard-driving rock ‘n’ www.explorewaterlooregion.ca

The city of Waterloo has become known as a hotbed of live jazz. If you are serious about jazz you will not miss the Sun Life Financial UpTown Waterloo Jazz Festival July 17-19, 2015. 49 The historic riverfront along the Grand River in Cambridge is the setting for the remarkable Mill Race Festival of Traditional Folk Music, this year running from July 31 to August 2. Roots music lovers come from all around to enjoy this feast of traditional folk music, now in its 23rd season. Founders created the unique event to celebrate traditional forms of music and dance, especially those reflecting the cultures that make up the community of Cambridge and surrounding area. The multi-stage event also features arts, crafts, food and refreshments.
Each fall sees KOI Music Festival, a three-day celebration of kick-ass independent indie, metal and punk music that reverberates through downtown Kitchener September 25-27. More than 150 bands – local stars, national and international performers – are showcased on multiple stages. Some of the performances are free of charge.

The TD Kitchener Blues Festival attracts over 150,000 visits to this four-day event, now celebrating its 15th year. The 2015 Festival, which runs August 6-9, will feature multiple stages (with both free admission and paid concerts). The finest blues performers from around the world show up to perform for wildly enthusiastic audiences; local rising stars also get their chance to shine. The music rarely stops during the four-day event, with opening acts on stage by 12 noon, and blues stars sitting in at

INNOCENTE BREWING COMPANY Molecular Biology and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship studying yeast with a brew-making obsession for hopped up beer? You get Steve Innocente, the madabout-hops scientist who turns beer making into an art form. In 2004, Innocente moved with his family to Scotland where he did his post-doc at the University of Edinburgh, studying Saccharomyces cerevisiae (brewing yeast) as a model system.

GRAND RIVER BREWING Grand River Brewing is located in an old historic building in Galt, Cambridge close to the river and Dunfield Theatre Cambridge. The brewery makes award winning seasonal beers – Highballer Pumpkin Ale, Mill Race Mild and Curmudgeon IPA. Plowman's Ale, the brewery’s signature brew is a big, bold beer loaded with five types of hops and backed up with a hearty grain that establishes balance and body. This deep coppercoloured beer is spicy with a slight citrus hops note right from the start and a rounded malt finish to accompany the hop bitterness.

RIDING IN THE CITY Not up for a long rural ride or rock-jumping, but you’re ready to ride in Waterloo Region? Local municipalities have made cycling within the cities of Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge easier, with new multi-use trails and way finding signs to point cyclists in the right direction – literally! The Iron Horse trail (5.5 km) is a great way to explore the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo at a relaxed pace. Begin your trip with a warm-up coffee at one of the shops at the historic Bauer building at the Waterloo trailhead. Fifteen minutes of relaxed cycling will bring you to City Café Bakery (more coffee, anyone?); a short ride later you arrive at Victoria Park, where you can visit the super splash pad and new playground (whether or not you are travelling with kids!), enjoy a picnic lunch, visit the Victoria Park Gallery (open weekend and holiday afternoons from 1- 4:30, midMay to late October) and soak up the sun. Visit Joseph Schneider Haus Museum & Gallery for a dynamic community museum in downtown Kitchener built by one of the area's first pioneers, Joseph Schneider, a Pennsylvania-German Mennonite. The heart-shaped latch at the kitchen door extends the first gesture of welcome. Then the warmth of the stove draws you in, friendly staff in period dress complete the the seasonal task or just pull up a chair for some tea talk. Stop for lunch at one of the many great restaurants downtown Kitchener including Imbibe or The Boathouse, both serving locally sourced food. Finish the trip with a visit to Waterloo Region Museum and Doon Heritage Village. The main gallery tells the story of Waterloo Region following through to the 'Ocean Bound!" exhibit on until May 10th replaced by 'Beer The Exhibit' in June. The entrance to Doon Heritage Village is a picturesque 60 acre living history village that shows visitors what life was like in Waterloo Region in 1914. The village is open seasonally from May to December.
