KWV Holistic Medicine & Spa
Yonge St.
@ 1008 Yonge St. Toronto, CA Thesis
Thesis Statement Promoting healthier life style with aid of holistic medicines and spas to maximize natural self-healing ability of human body
Concept
Design concept of KWV is keystone. The idea of holistic medicine is that human body has the ability to self-restore, thus it focus on well-being. Holistic medicine is for people in gray zone (condition where people are neither diseased nor healthy), aiding to cure themselves and keeping them in healthy status. Keystone, by definition in Oxford English Dictionary, is “a central stone at the summit of an arch, locking the whole together. KWV aims to be just like a keystone in the Rosedale neighborhood, holding people in fine fettle and, by extension, community as a healthy whole. 6
Downtown Toronto
Location KWV takes place where Toronto Solid Waste Management Plant is, the opposite side to TTC Rosedale station, juxtaposed with Ramsden Park which is a green hub in Rosedale neighbourhood. Rosedale is one of the wealthy neighbourhoods in Toronto where seniors and retired people take the majority of population. Thus a strong tendancy towards healthy life is easily expected. KWV, however, aims to be a destination not only for seniors in this neighbourhood but also for anyone who wants wellness getaway from daily stressful city life. Due to its close proximity from both mid &downtown, the location of KWV is expected to fully serve its very purpose.

T h e s i s Case Study The project starts with the initial idea of putting a collective holistic medicines into one place in a similer way of a general hospital does. However, unlike a general hospital which is often perceived as distant, cold, and uneasy, KWV aims to create more intimate space by re-enacting a heimish atmosphere that could be often perceived in village-like residential area. Hence, the name a Wholeness Village.

This project is about TRANSFORMATION of an existing buildings and reconfiguration of their purpose of use with minimum modification of existing structures and massing of the buildings. Space in the long narrow area has been re-arranged while a high-ceiling bulged area is divided into two storeys. Internal circulation paths has been placed across the bulged area, connected to Building C by the bridge. Lower right corner of the bulged area has been carved out to create main lobby area.

spine
A spine of human body is in line with a keystone in a vault or arch
in a sense that of clutching to retain the whole.
Exterior Design For the sake of better INTERACTION with communities around, it is very important that KWV is easy to be found and noticed by passerbys. So a front facade and main entrance are designed to be placed at an angle facing Ramsden Park and Yonge St. at once. A canopy add-on is a design decision to break a sense of linearity & horizontality inherent in the existing buildings without destroying an original structures. A dynamic shape of canopy acts like a large scaled signage, helping to expose KWV visually far while spreading a vibrant energy to the local communities.

C u l t u r e & A r c h i t e c t u r e S e m i n a r Persian Culture Historically Persian culture has achieved an individuality distinct from that of other Muslim countries despite the repeated trauma of invasions and cultural shocks. Those distinctive characteristics such as introversion, symmetry, bold geometric forms, homogeneous proportions, intricate & lavish patterns, can easily be found in traditional Persian architectures such as tomb, garden, and tea house. Tea has been a major significance in Persian culture since alcohol is absolutely prohibited in Islam.
Persian Garden Sunlight & its effects are important elements of Persian garden design.

Project Overview This group project explores a Persian culture and its myth & belief systems through research and requires to utilize a collective understanding within a design. A designated site for this project is in Queen Steet West, a commercial district where many unique themed fashion boutiques and art stores are clustered togather. The project requires to utilize a mixed use program within a design.
Design Concept A modern interpretation of Persian Garden & tea cuture

Various textures & shapes, shade, pavilion, trellise are all clever devices to harness the light. Due to hot weather conditions of the region, water is an critical element in design and maintenance of the garden. A Persian garden is an intermediate place where attemps to integrate indoors with outdoors by connecting it with an inner courtyard.

Material Choice The shadows that brais-soleil casts upon walls and floors already add up complex patterns to interor space. For this, mildly patterned materials have been used under the necessity. The only place where strong patterned tiles have been used is bench steps to emphasis a micro garden. The elevator core and water screen have been used to enhance a sense of virticality of interior micro garden to make this area more spacious.

H a b i t a t S t u d i o Design Concept This project requires a particular attention to the site and its spirits with respect to designing habitat. Vernacular architecures are good examples of displaying genius loci reflecting characteristics of local cultures & environmental conditions. It is found that a birdhouse shows certain aspects of what vernacular architecture needs to be in High Park environment. It is
elevated off the ground either hung on a tree
or mounted on post to keep a distance from water, commonly made of wood which is readily accessible, easy to
AVISTAT @ High Park, Toronto, CA Exploration Studio: Personal Space
manipulate, and able to blend well w/ natures arround. It has a archetypal form of simple geometry which has much
potentials to be explored with respect to sculptural aspect and its efficient space use.
Project Overview
Sustainable Design
Habitat is a proejct of designing a “cocoon” house for a design student in a semi-wilderness inside the city. The shelter which should to be idiosyncratic, intimate, and essentially hermitic place will last only for one year. Therefore the design must fit into the idea of “doing more with less.” Also, it particularly needs to consider of genius loci - spirit of site - from the beginning of design process.
Since this project requires only two or three persons efforts to both construct & deconstruct, most parts will be prefabrecated off the site and assembled in situ. This way enables a construction easier and minimizes a damage to the environment on site. Avistat has two parts - a dwelling area and a base for lifting this space up. Prefabricated wood panels will be used for both parts.
DESIGN CHALLENGE 28
These two structures, situated in Coal Harbour, Vanocouver, are treated as a public sculpture. Avistat is designed with emphasis on its sculptural aspect in hopes that it will last longer even after one-yearprivate use for the sake of public use. While these public folly arts are intended to be seen only, Avistat, however, can be opened to public for interactions and activities which can be determined later. This after use plan is not only good for public but also for the environment.
The habitat needs to - be no more than 150 sq. ft (13.93 sq. m) - be designed with concern of its sustainability (how to be constructed and disassembled in one year without damaging the environment around) - be easy to construct and deconstruct after use Public Sculpture/Folly Art
A v i s t a t Site Analysis
High Park - home to multiple species of bird, marsh wildlife, and tree - is the largest park in Toronto, located far from the west edge of downtown Toronto. The chosen site is located near upper part of Grenadier Pond. Due to the presence of water nearby, the area has a strong prevailing (south east ward) wind. The area is covered with tall trees and greens, a temperature is a bit lower than that of outside of the park.

Inspired by a birdhouse, Avistat (Bird + Habitat) suggests an optimized environment for a design student who needs a quiet and isolateed space to focus on design works. Its aerodynamic form is designed to bear with consistant winds. The orientation of Avistat is carefully decided by the direction of frequent wind (blowing from North to South East). Glass roof allows maximum sunlight through the tall trees.

MOCCA is located just off the busy commercial area on the Queen st. west. Across the street is a mental hospital so the neighbourhood is relatively calm and quiet in general. MOCCA is a boxy brick building which passerbys can hardly notice that it is a museum. Not only its style but also the lack of a facade on the street side, poor signage, underutilized courtyard are critical factors to its weak presence in the neighbourhood.

The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA) is considered one of the key cultural institutions to Canadian artistic community. MOCCA is located along the Queen St. West distric of downtown Toronto, home to numerous art galleries, boutique shops, and cultural centres. Just like NYC MoMa PS1 YAP (Young Architects Program), this project is to propose a pavilion design for the courtyard of MOCCA to invigorate the instititon.

Design Concept The basic idea to start the project with was to create organic looking structure out of something very geometric, to visually stand out among plain looking boxy buildings as a way to draw people’s attention to MOCCA building . The famous Japanese wave painting below was the strong influence to pavilion design and also it name. The great energy & aggressive gesture that wave form has are what MOCCA lacks of to the public eyes.
Skewed Hexagon
A centrosymmetric (skewed) hexagon is a primary module which evolves to sub-modular form (above). Undulating wave patterns are achieved by arraying sub-modular forms in parallel at different positions.

Design Intention The name of a pavilion, the great wave, is derived from overall shape that resembles a wave pattern. The pattern is all about MOVEMENT, LIVENESS, ENERGY of the waves. The ceiling patterns of pavilion are intended to be a direct reflection of its roof patterns so that visitors can feel the same vibrant energy and liveness from inside & outside of MOCCA. All the benches in different space are made out of same moduler pieces so that they can be considered as integrated parts of a pavilion.

Entrance The part of the pavilion roof is extended out toward the sidewalk, creating an overhead threshold which also acts like a signage to draw the attendions of passerbys. The roof/ceiling is desaigned to look as if the visitors are entering into a wave like how a surfer gets engulfed underneath the ocean waves.
Space for Contemplation This space is sectioned off from Space for Congregation, and blocked off from its surroundings and sunlight to give a calming effect like water running down the stream following a path.
Space for Congregation At the end of the main path is the space for congregation, just as how all rivers meet into a body of water. This space is designed to allow maximum sunlight to reach the area since it is close to the entrance of MOCCA.

Project Overview It is a commisioned project from a client who wants to open a franchise of Est. West cafe at Toronto Women’s Collage Hospital which will be open in 2015. The assigned space is pretty tight (485 sq ft.) to occupy all the required kitchen appliances, so efficient space use was a major challenge. It was also requested rather simple & minimal design with a certain featuring aspect that highlights the face of a cafe.
