If you have a particular career area that you are already interested in you will probably find it in one of our profile options. There is lots of up to date information about the job market and the kind of salary you can expect from different careers. Most importantly, we have identified the family of subjects we offer that will support your further progression in these areas, preparing you for a University course or on-the-job training. You will need to choose 3 or 4 subjects to study in Sixth Form, usually from a single profile option. SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER You will need to demonstrate a good understanding of social media and online communities. Some employers may expect you to have a degree in a relevant subject.

BUSINESS ADVISER Employers will usually be more interested in your skills and experience than your formal qualifications, but it may be helpful to have a business-related degree or professional qualification.

IT SUPPORT TECHNICIAN You will need to have a wide knowledge of operating systems, need to know about networking, hardware and software and be able to explain problems and solutions clearly to non-technical users.


INSURANCE CLAIMS MANAGER You can get a junior position and work your way up. Alternatively, an academic route is also possible. Most management training schemes, ask for A levels or equivalent.

IT PROJECT MANAGER You will need a relevant qualification like a foundation degree, degree or postgraduate award. Relevant subjects include, computing, information systems, project management and business management.

BANK MANAGER You can join a bank or building society's graduate management trainee scheme, gain experience in branch and work your way up or complete a Higher Apprenticeship in Banking. You will need a degree qualification to join as a management trainee.

LABOUR MARKET INFORMATION INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IS AN INEVITABLE PART OF EVERYDAY LIFE, LET ALONE MORE OR LESS EVERY INDUSTRY. SOUND ENGINEER

Essential: IT skills, drawing skills and you’ll need to be able to find practical solutions to problems.

There are no set entry qualifications but employers highly value experience and it will improve your chances of finding work if you have a good knowledge of sound technology and equipment, and an understanding of the science of sound.

Most professional graphic designers have a foundation degree, HND or degree in graphic design or other art and design-based subject.

EVENTS MANAGER A qualification in events management may help but is not essential if you can get relevant work experience. You will need to have good communication and people skills, be good at problem-solving and will need to have lots of determination and a positive attitude.

PHOTOGRAPHER Essential: Creativity, technical skills and artistic skills along with the ability to make people feel relaxed. Most professional photographers take a college or university course to develop their technical skills.

LABOUR MARKET INFORMATION THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES IN THE UK EMPLOY 1.5 MILLION PEOPLE ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND ARE WORTH MORE THAN £36 BILLION. PHOTOGRAPHY IS AN EVER EXPANDING MEDIUM AND IS EMPLOYED IN MANY CONTEXTS INCLUDING FASHION, ADVERTISING, JOURNALISM, MEDICINE, SCIENCE AND ART AND DESIGN.

FASHION DESIGNER You need to have a good eye for colour and shape and skills like pattern cutting and sewing. A relevant HND, foundation degree, or degree that teaches both design and technical skills will give you the practical knowledge needed to work in the industry.

TV PRODUCTION RUNNER There is no set entry route - enthusiasm, common sense and initiative are as important as formal qualifications. Hours vary according to the needs of the production and may be long, unsocial and on an ‘as and when’ required basis.

Biology is the study of life. Studying the subject develops understanding in the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution and distribution of living organisms and how they interact with one another. Biology gives us a fascinating insight of the world around us from the microscopic to the macroscopic and encompasses biochemistry, botany, cellular biology, ecology, evolution, genetics, physiology and zoology.

Chemistry is the study of matter; providing a deep insight into our physical world from how chemicals interact to create designer medicine, to cleaner fuels and nanotechnology. It explains the science behind food, the functioning of the human body, archaeology and so much more.

Have you ever wondered what capitalism is? Why politicians argue as to whether the UK should stay within the EU? Why some people earn so much and others earn so little? As a social science which combines maths and statistics with sciences and the humanities, Economics is a subject which explores the factors that influence these issues and many more.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will study a wide range of topics covering cells, biological molecules, body organ systems, classification, communicable and noncommunicable diseases, genetics, inheritance, gene technology, respiration, photosynthesis, nutrient cycles, ecosystems, hormonal and nervous control. You will also develop a range of investigative and practical skills. HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? A Level Biology will be assessed by written exams at the end of the course. Your practical skills will be assessed separately. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? An A Level in Biology is highly regarded by universities and colleges and can lead to many rewarding careers in medical and health related areas. For many Biology or Biological Sciences degree courses, A level Biology is a compulsory pre-requisite.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will study a wide range of topics in both organic and inorganic chemistry covering atomic structure, amount of substance, chemical bonding, the periodic table and the patterns of chemicals, energetics, kinetics, thermodynamics, equilibria, redox reactions, acids and bases, and nomenclature, whilst developing a range of investigative skills. HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? A Level Chemistry will be assessed by written exams at the end of the course. Your practical skills will be assessed separately. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? An A Level in Chemistry is an essential pre-requisite for degree level courses in biochemistry, chemistry, dentistry, medicine, veterinary science. FORMER STUDENT PROFILE Emma Anderson is studying Natural Sciences at University of Cambridge.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will investigate the operation of markets and market failure including economic methodology and issues arising from limited resources. You will understand how price is determined in a competitive market and will explore the impact of production on costs and revenue. You will examine the market mechanism, market failure and Government intervention in markets. You will then study the national economy within a global context. HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? A Level Economics will be assessed by written exams at the end of the course. There is no coursework. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? A Level Economics will lead to further study in a range of subjects at degree level due to the analytical nature of the subject. It is a highly regarded qualification. Career paths can include jobs in business, finance, management consultancy, politics and the public sector.

English at A Level is an exploration into the English and Continental cannon. Close scrutiny of landmark authors and poets, who have over time shaped the language that we speak freely today, will develop your analytical and creative skills. Over the two year course, your voice will develop as a critique and commentator of classic and contemporary English Literature while your investigative and forensic skills will be enhanced through the English Language components.

Geography is an exciting, topical and challenging subject. The world around us is changing and Geography helps us to understand and predict those changes. You will develop an understanding of how human and physical processes have shaped the world around us. Topics studied are relevant and important to today’s modern world and will help you to understand many of the news deadlines reported every day.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will learn about how and why views and perspectives of different kinds are shaped and used in narratives. You will learn how language choices help to shape the representations of different worlds and perspectives in fiction and poetry. You will explore the imagined worlds of fiction and poetry which are characterised by unusual narratives, narrators and events. You will analyse the language choices made by writers in order to study their point of view, characterisation, presentation of time and space and the narrative structure.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will study both physical and human geography: rivers, flood management, coastal management, plate tectonics, weather, globalisation, population change and food supply issues. You will also develop your geographical skills: investigative, research, cartographic, graphical, statistical and ICT.

GOVERNMENT & POLITICS SUBJECT OVERVIEW A Level Government and Politics allows you to explore your own understanding of our political system and compare it to other countries’. You will be able to evaluate the UK political organisation and develop your own political ideology. This course allows you to develop you understanding of current affairs and political systems but also develops your ability to synthesise and interpret information, to analyse and evaluate knowledge, to identify connections and similarities and to select relevant material and construct coherent arguments. WHAT WILL I STUDY?

A Level Geography will be assessed by written AS and A2 exams at the end of each year. There is no coursework.

You will learn about the nature of participation in the political process and in voting; different electoral systems and different political parties and about pressure groups and protest. You will learn about the British constitution and our Parliament, the Core Executive and other levels of governance. You will also learn about different global political ideologies including liberalism, socialism, conservatism, fascism and communism.

A Level English is highly valued by Universities and employers. It can lead directly to degree courses such as law, journalism, politics and history and help prepare you for careers in the media industries or business.

Geography allows you to enter such careers as earth and environmental sciences, economic development, environmental management, international trade, transportation analysis and planning, diplomacy, market analysis, urban and regional planning, research, teaching, cartography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Maths is about patterns and structure, logic, deduction and proof. It is about challenge and clarity and the satisfaction gained when you know something is right.

A creative and aspirational subject, which offers a variety of different media related tasks, projects and opportunities. Media Studies examines contemporary forms of mass communication such as TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, film and the internet. You will study the values and messages within the media, how media texts are constructed and how contemporary audiences respond to them.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? Study of History will cover some broads themes in the context of periods of history. You will learn about the continuity and change in the life of individuals and societies: how governments control and mobilise societies; how conflicts between states and between different ethnic groups arise and are resolved and how society is organized at the level of the family, community and nation. You will have an opportunity to explore different periods of history which might include the unification of Germany, the rise of nazism or the reign of Henry VIII. HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? A Level History will be assessed by written exams at the end of the course. There is no coursework. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? The skills used in History are relevant to a wide range of subjects and vocations. It is a good A Level to consider taking if you are interested in pursuing any Humanities-based degree. It is perhaps the best A level to take if you are thinking of studying Law at university. It is widely recognised that A Level History remains an academically demanding subject with high prestige. Universities and employers know that someone who has been successful in the study of History should have acquired a range of important skills.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will study a wide range of topics including: calculus, trigonometry, differential equations, coordinate geometry, vector geometry, kinematics, statics, dynamics and probability. You will develop your problem solving skills, your logical thinking skills and your ability to model complex situations more simply. HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? A Level Maths will be assessed by written AS and A2 exams at the end of each year There is no coursework. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? A strong mathematical ability is highly valued by Universities and employers. A Levels maths is an essential requirement for many degree courses such as mathematics, computing, statistics, engineering and physics and is highly desirable in a wide range of others including economics, finance, accounting, chemistry and medicine. WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will learn the underpinning concepts and theories and the fundamental production skills such as designing, filming and editing. At AS you study key concepts such as media language, media representations, media reception and media production across different areas including television, radio, film, magazines, newspapers, music promotion, advertising and e-media. At A2, you will further develop your theoretical and production skills creating a music video along with a music artist promotional campaign. HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? A Level Media Studies will be assessed with a written piece of coursework (50%) and an exam (50%) for AS and A2. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? Media naturally lends itself to careers in films and television, journalism, music, marketing, advertising or public relations. Wider careers supported by media studies include: social work, law, medicine and education.

Then you need to get involved in the creative and media industries and studying Photography will take you there. You will be introduced to a variety of experiences exploring a range of photographic techniques, styles and genres, including: portraiture, documentary, photojournalism, landscape and experimental imagery.

Physics is the starting point of many technologies in the world around us. It underlies many new inventions such as the iPad, MRI scanners in hospitals, production of new materials, energysaving light bulbs and even the entire internet. A physics qualification is essential for many future careers in science and engineering. It can also help you make progress in other fields that value the demanding skills developed through physics. Many accountants, bankers, musicians and business managers have benefited from studying physics.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? This course is a 100% practical and contextual course with no theory based exam. You will develop technical understanding relating to the composition of images and an ability to explore the different elements of visual language within a variety of topics including; portraiture, recreating a masterpiece, connected images, fashion photography, experimental photography and light painting. HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? A Level Photography will be assessed through a combination of an externally set assignment (40%) and coursework (60%) for AS and A2. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? This course allows students to apply for a variety of Higher Education courses including Foundation Degrees, HNDs and BA degrees in art, design and different areas of photography. Courses such as documentary photography, photographic art, fashion photography, fine art, art practice, graphic design, animation, media studies, multimedia and lens based media, film and television. This course will develop the essential skills needed for study at a higher level and employment. WHAT WILL I STUDY? Everything from the massive objects which make up the whole universe right down to the smallest particle created in a particle accelerator, is studied in A Level Physics. Physics is the most fundamental and also the widest reaching of the sciences and is why it is such an exciting subject to study. HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? A Level Physics will be assessed by written exams at the end of the course. Your practical skills will be assessed separately. WHERE DOES IT LEAD? A Level Physics opens up unending opportunities in the world of work and of higher education. As well as going on to study physics or the other sciences at university, A Level physicists can go on to study engineering, economics, business, medicine or architecture. Psychology is the scientific study of how humans think and behave. It covers a wide range of topics including how our brains work, our memory, group behaviours and psychological disorders. A knowledge of psychology is becoming increasingly important in a range if disciplines: sport coaching, human resources management, advertising, marketing, counselling and teaching. Psychology will also help to develop your analytical, independent thinking and research skills.

Do we make our own decision about our relationships with other people, or are these characterised by social norms? Does our career and earning potential depend on our own abilities or are we conditioned by the economy around us? Sociology studies the society in which we live and the relationships between individuals and groups of people. No one is an island. We have social relations with our families, friends, neighbours, nations and as human beings. Sociology is the study of these relationships and understanding why our lives and the lives of other are the way they are.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? Cognitive Psychology; the nature of human memory and how researchers have investigated differences between long term and short term memory. Research methods; the need for effective research and the methods, research designs and analysis of data needed for effective psychological research; Developmental Psychology; the nature of early social development; Biological Psychology; the body’s response to stress, and a range of approaches used to cope with stress; Social Psychology; the nature of obedience to authority and compliance; Psychopathology; the nature of abnormal behaviours through the study of definitions of abnormality and the treatments used in the discipline.

Sociology is the attempt to understand how society works. It can help us as we try to make sense of our own lives, as well as giving us a sense of our wider responsibility to society.

Whether it’s your first job in a supermarket or you are leading a multimillion pound industry you will be working with ICT equipment. Electronic learning allows you to demonstrate a variety of skills including communicating online, fixing and maintaining computers, creating software, as well as graphic design.

The role of the performer in the 21st century is very demanding and the training and skills required to meet the needs of this challenging industry need to be learnt to an outstanding standard.
