Welcome to the 2022 Seattle International Auto Show! It’s the perfect place for gathering ideas, talking to experts and maybe dreaming a little. There’s never been so many new and exciting vehicles to choose from.

Take advantage of the unique resources the show offers. There are dozens of vehicles to test drive. Take a V.I.P. tour with an industry expert. Electric Highway lets you get behind the wheel of the latest EVs, important since high demand for these cars can make that difficult. Avants has plenty of droolworthy vehicles for performance enthusiasts to savor. Once your kids have helped you assess dozens of back seats, let them unwind at the Family Fun Zone.

There’s no better tool for researching your next vehicle. That you’re here proves you’re a smart consumer making informed decisions. The show is a chance for real-world comparisons and checking out vehicles you might overlook. No bouncing from dealership to dealership. It’s all under one roof, sheltered from the rain, ready for you to discover.

If you’re here for research, dive in with an open mind. The auto industry

is changing quickly, improving quality and introducing advanced powertrains. Many cars and trucks are available with efficient hybrid powertrains. Some even feature “plug-in hybrid” systems (often called PHEVs) that cover most daily driving on electricity alone, then seamlessly switch to gasoline for long trips. It’s important to look outside your favorite brands to discover what’s new and might suit your lifestyle.

Chances are you’ve done some research. Great start! Doing little (or none) is the biggest mistake people make. Attending the Seattle International Auto Show is an excellent way to know you’re getting the right vehicle. Sure, the internet has made comparing cars and trucks much easier, but the digital experience doesn’t allow for touching and exploring the interior of a car, truck or S.U.V. At the show, everything is fresh in your mind so differences between models are crystal clear. Plus, you can’t judge seat comfort (or lack of) by staring at a computer screen. Test drive as many vehicles as possible to see if the suspension is too soft or firm or the road noise is boomy. It’s a convenience the show offers. Supply chain issues are easing but they continue to affect production so it’s wise to have a Plan B and C in case your first choice isn’t

readily available.

While here, check out all of the vehicles that fit your criteria. Let’s say you’re thinking about an all-wheel drive crossover/SUV (because who in Seattle isn’t, huh?). There’s a blizzard of choices and you might find a vehicle that’s not on your radar screen. The Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson are new for 2022 and available as fuel sipping hybrids (as is sales champ Toyota RAV4 and Ford’s Escape).. Chevy Blazer, Nissan Rogue, Jeep Cherokee and Bronco Sport also compete in this segment. It’s a big investment. The average vehicle retails for $47,000 these days.

While visiting a manufacturer’s booth, take a look around. Chat up the agents staffing the booths. They’re highly trained to answer your questions. Don’t be shy to ask if the Volkswagen ID.4 electric vehicle comes in all-wheel drive (it does now and it’s made in Chattanooga, TN). If you have a 120V outlet close to your parking space, check if any of your choices come as a plug-in hybrid. Even electrified models with a 30-mile all-electric range can slash your gasoline consumption. These trained pros can tell you what options are available and at what trim level.

Newest of the Cars, Trucks and SUVs

The Seattle International Auto Show is the perfect place for both buyers and dreamers. Here’s the newest of the new cars, trucks and S.U.V.s. Keep in mind there’s still supply chain issues. If for some reason your favorite doesn’t make it to the show, make time to check them out at your local Puget Sound automotive dealership.

Acura- Acura brings a new highperformance MDX Type-S three-row S.U.V. with Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. It delivers true torque vectoring to the rear wheels for excellent handling. But the big news is the return of the Integra. It’s back as four-door hatchback with an available six-speed manual. Huzzah!

Alfa Romeo- The Italian brand adds a new smaller crossover that should be big with Americans. The Tonale (pronounce toe-NA-lay) slots under the Stelvio, about the same size as Porsche’s Macan. It gets two powertrains, a 256-horsepower turbo 4-cylinder and a 272-horse plug-in hybrid with around 30 miles of all-electric range.

BMW- The Bavarian brand is all charged up with new EVs. There’s the 335 horsepower i4 eDrive40 sedan with a 300-mile range, plus the all-electric iX S.U.V. that’s about the size of an X5. It offers all-wheel drive, 516 horsepower and the same range as the i4. A new 7-Series is on the horizon, it can be had with EV and ICE powertrains. The small X1 crossover is redesigned with more passenger space. The large X7 S.U.V. gets a big update inside and out.

Buick- The Tri-Shield brand sports a new logo and most of its vehicles get new updated paint and trim. Remember, Buick is an all S.U.V brand now. No more sedans or coupes.

Chevrolet- The Corvette Z06 is back with a flat-plane crankshaft equipped V8 that makes 670 horsepower. This is Porsche-slaying stuff that should get you to the grocery store right quick. The Bolt EV and EUV get new styling and cabins plus a dramatic price drop for 2023. With a 265 miles range, it starts at $26,595 and that’s before any tax credits. Suburban and Tahoe get Super Cruise, the best semiautonomous driving tech in the business.

Cadillac- The Lyriq is the brand’s first all-electric vehicle (few remember the ELR PHEV). It’s a return to the “Standard of the World” with a high tech interior and dramatic exterior lighting display that’ll provide hours of entertainment for the neighbors. The CT4-V (472 HP) and CT5-V (668 HP) Blackhawk models will take on all sport sedans with copious amounts of power and supernatural handling.

Ford- The all-new Maverick compact pickup truck that’s based on the Bronco Sport crossover architecture adds a new AWD off-road oriented Tremor model. The front-wheel drive hybrid version returns 40 miles from a gallon of gas in the city. The Blue Oval folks have electrified America’s best-selling vehicle, the F-150 pickup. Dubbed Lightning, it can provide juice to a home during power outages and has a huge amount of storage where a V8 engine used to live. And there’s white hot Bronco 2- and 4-door that’s knocking on Jeep Wrangler’s door. It’s now available as a twin-turbo V6 Raptor version.

GMC- The “professional grade” brand has resurrected the Hummer name but these pickups and S.U.V.s conquer terrain with electric drive. The all-new Hummer has up to 1,000 horsepower and 330 miles of range. It can also crabwalk, helpful for both tricky canyon maneuvers and getting out of tight Costco parking spots.

Honda- There’s an all-new CR-V

that’s larger and more stylish. It’s also available with two powertrains- a turbo four-cylinder with 190 horsepower, and a fuel-efficient hybrid with 204 ponies. There’s a new HR-V compact crossover too that’s a little larger on the outside and a nicely trimmed cabin. The Civic sedan and hatchback with Accord-like styling were new for 2022. Watch out for the new performance-oriented Si and Type R models.

Hyundai- The all-electric Ioniq 5 is considered one of the best EVs money can buy. It charges fast, has a range of over 300 miles, and gets an angular look like no other. The company recently brought an all-new Tucson crossover to market that includes gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Stretch the wheelbase of the Tucson, then lop off the cargo area glass and you have the Santa Cruz, kind of a small pickup in the vein of Ford’s Maverick (but Hyundai insists the “Sport Adventure Vehicle” is not intended to compete in the pickup segment).

Jeep- The Wagoneer has been revived as a large three-row S.U.V. that competes with Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition. Now there’s a roomier L version. For the ultimate in swank, go with the Grand Wagoneer that goes toe-to-toe with Cadillac Escalade. Active families will also gravitate to the Grand Cherokee and the slightly longer Grand Cherokee L with three rows of seating. It and the Wrangler are available with 4xe powertrains with

An avalanche of technology is flood into modern vehicles, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Educating yourself about the improvements is a good reason to attend the 2022 Seattle International Auto Show. These new features improve performance, add comfort and protect your family from harm. And some of it gets better as you own the vehicle.

Here are some trends you’ll see. You may even base your next purchase on one of them.

Cars Are Getting Smarter, Safer and More Efficient

Automobiles are the most advanced consumer product on the market, bar none. It’s hard to overstate how sophisticated they’ve become. Much of the revolution is focused on safety, starting with Computer Aided Design, or CAD. It’s been used for decades to create the shared architectures underneath cars and trucks but has become significantly more powerful. General Motors’ new methods accelerated the Cadillac Lyriq EV development by nine months. It helped place stronger materials where they’re needed and virtually tuned the aerodynamics. The reduced weight and wind-cheating surface adds range without

a larger battery. Vehicles are now “crash tested” hundreds if not thousands of times virtually before a physical vehicle is built. This allows engineers to tweak the structure for maximum protection and gives us safer cars at lower prices.

The new Toyota Tundra’s new frame uses an exclusive process that laser welds a jigsaw puzzle-like arrangement of multiple grades of steel to form a single fully boxed beam. This puts strong materials where needed, and lightness where it’s not for a frame is 10 percent lighter and 20 percent more rigid. Together with a new rear coil suspension, ride quality is significantly improved.

It’s common to find even budgetminded vehicles under $25,000 with standard automatic emergency braking. Kia Soul and Forte, Volkswagen Jetta and Taos, Hyundai Elantra and Venue, Nissan Sentra and Kicks plus many more have it standard to keep you (and others) safe. This was once exclusive to luxury marques.

Most manufactures have made these kinds of systems standard (or extremely affordable) across much of their lineups. Also, look for cross path detection that, when backing up in a parking lot, alerts a driver to unseen cars approaching from the side. Some systems brake to avoid a collision. The new Lexus NX and RX crossovers use the blind spot monitoring

sensors to detect cars or bicyclists that are coming from behind and keeps the door from opening into them.

Let’s Take The Long Way Home

Tech can make your drive more pleasant. Most cars are available with keyless ignition so digging through your pockets or purse to open and start your car is a thing of the past. Modern noise regulations cap the decibel level of exhaust notes. Piped-in sound, whether through a physical valve or electronically generated through speakers, give performance junkies the growl they love while keeping the streets a quieter place. Or, like noise canceling headphones, they can create reverse waveforms to eliminate wind and road noise.

Screens seem to be taking over everywhere and the automobile is no different. Many vehicles are available with an LCD display that replaces the traditional gauge cluster and it can be rearranged to your liking. Heads up displays are also useful. Information like speed, traffic information, radio station and navigation prompts appear to float near the nose of the vehicle keeping the driver’s eyes on the road.

General Motors was aggressive in installing high-speed internet hotspots in its cars and more and more automakers are following its lead. For families that want to stream movies on the way to Grandma’s house, it easily handles multiple devices and the signal is much more robust than what your cell phone offers. Sure, it’s another monthly subscription but you’ll never hear “are we there yet?” again.

You’ll be talking to your cars more (no, not swearing) and they will respond. The last few years have brought much better natural language “voice assistant” interfaces inside the car, much like you would use Apple’s Siri, Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. Saying “hey BMW, I’m cold” will turn up the climate control a few degrees and switch on the heated seats. Nearly all cars come with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto that respond much the same way to

Nissan’s ProPilot Assist plus Hyundai and Kia Highway Driving Assist is especially well done when it comes to affordability. True handsfree driving is possible with GM’s Super Cruise, Ford’s Blue Cruise and the upcoming Lexus Teammate. Unlike other systems, there’s little need to touch the steering wheel with those three. I drove (or rather rode) a Super Cruise equipped vehicle from Tacoma to Portland, only touching the wheel and pedals once, and that was to pull off to a rest stop. And if you’ve never experienced automated parking, it’s faster and safer than most humans.

Turbocharging is the Future of ICE

Ford’s Mustang GT is equipped with a 5-liter V8 that pumps out 460 horsepower. But automakers are consistently dropping cylinders from internal combustion engines (or ICE) while keeping the same amount of power. How? Turbocharging. Ford eliminated the V6 from the Mustang line since the 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder provides more power and better fuel economy.

Ford’s vaunted F-150 Raptor pickup ditches a V8 for a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 rated at 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. You won’t miss the extra cylinders.

Really. And modern turbo engines are far more reliable than the units of just a decade ago.

Another engine feature you’ll encounter is automatic engine stop/start that employs a robust starting system for durability. At standstill the engine turns itself off. Lift off the brake pedal, nudge the wheel or touch the throttle and it automatically comes to life. It’s important to test drive this feature because some automakers apply it much more seamlessly than others. It’s easy to disable in most cars, good in stop-and-go traffic jams where it becomes annoying.

Pickups Are Getting Upgrades

It’s tough to change the shape of a pickup but the automakers are doing heavy lifting to woo buyers. GMC Sierra can be had with a molded CarbonPro box that’s 60 pounds lighter than traditional steel units due to solid composite carbon fiber construction. It allows for distinct useful shapes like divots for motorcycle wheels and slots for mounting boards. The material is easily recyclable (Northwesterners appreciate that kind of thing.) And the MultiPro Tailgate is now offered on both Sierra and Chevy Silverado. Its six different positions include a bed extender, a half-height tailgate and a step to get into the bed more easily. It’s worth stopping by the booth for a demonstration.

The Ram 1500 offers a unique eTorque system that’s standard on the 3.6-liter V6 and a $1450 option for the 5.7-liter Hemi V8. It’s a mild hybrid that increases torque and fuel efficiency plus smooths out the shifts of the 8-speed gearbox. Toyota Tundra can be had with i-Force Max hybrid that gets an electric motor sandwiched between

a turbo V6 and the 10-speed transmission.

And there are plenty of electric pickups on the way. Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevy Silverado E will change the way things are done on the farm, and everywhere else.

Cars Simply Look Different Now

Compare a Honda Civic from the 1980’s with today’s all-new model and you’ll find the old car’s windshield was more upright. Most modern cars have dramatically swept front glass to gain aerodynamic efficiency. That and taller rumps add a couple of miles-per-gallon to a car’s fuel economy. Nowadays the measurement from the wheel arch to the top of the hood is much thicker, and bumpers have to be at a certain height to help protect pedestrians by redirecting them onto the hood instead of under the car.

Since the car’s silhouette has become chunkier, designers have responded with larger wheels and tires for a more balanced profile. Keep in mind that trendy low-profile tires on 19- and 20-inch wheels give the car a rougher ride because they don’t have the cushioning ability of taller sidewalls. They don’t protect the alloy wheels from pothole impact as well either. Ask me how I know.

This is the year electric vehicles start surging to the forefront. Currently (no pun intended) EVs make up just four percent of sales in the U.S. That should change significantly in the next few years. Think how many there are now, such as

According to J.D. Power, one of the main sources of ownership satisfaction (or unhappiness) is the user interface. That big screen in the center console is now how we interact with the car to control personal settings. Many are quite different from each other. Unlike switching from an Android to iOS phone, it’s nearly impossible to swap them out (though some can be rearranged to put favorite commands on the home screen. Most now come with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Some can improve using “over-the-air” updates to add vehicle features and freshen map data.

The latest tech advance is natural speech recognition. Use a waking phrase like “Hey Google” or “Hey BMW” allows drivers to adjust the cabin temperature while keeping their eyes on the road by simply saying “I’m cold”.

While you’re at the show, think about your current car routine. In the vehicle you’re considering, is it’s easy to use the navigation, switch radio stations or check the forecast? Look to see if there are redundant hard buttons for the climate control and if they can be used easily with gloves. And bring all the stuff you carry in your current vehicle

to the show- Air Pods, hair scrunchies, backpacks, snacks, and that huge travel mug to make sure they all fit. Check for clever storage options or if your giant phone is too large for the wireless charging pad.

An automobile is a huge investment and finding the best one for your particular needs is more important than trying to impress neighbors or coworkers. The “car geek” in your life offering advice might not know your wants and needs. Go in like you’ve never seen a car before and discover what you like functionally and emotionally.

Then research reliability and dealership locations to see if you’re still comfortable with your choice.

Buying a car, truck or S.U.V. that makes you truly happy means you’ll naturally maintain it better and keep it longer. Even if it’s more expensive than a second choice, the pricier ride might be a better value in the long run. So buy the car you love. It’s the best value in the long run.

Kia- The brand gets a new swoopy logo and a new electrified vehicle to go with the well regarded EV6. The second-generation Niro will be available as a hybrid, PHEV with 33 miles of electric range and an all-electric version that’s estimated at 253 miles of travel. There’s also a larger all-new Sportage with a version for just about everyone- standard ICE, hybrid, PHEV and a dedicated off-road model dubbed X-Pro. The EV6 EV adds a high-performance GT model.

Lexus- Toyota’s luxury marque has an all-new RX, the fifth generation. It can be had as the RX350 with a turbocharged four-cylinder, the RX350h hybrid with standard all-wheel drive, and the

high performance RX500h F SPORT Performance hybrid. The NX compact crossover gets four different power trains including a plug-in hybrid with 37 miles of all electric range. Both RX and NX get the brand’s all-new voice activated user interface that was developed in-house.

Nissan- The all-new Ariya EV is on the way. Available in front and all-wheel drive, the sleek futuristic crossover has a range of up to 304 miles depending on model (there are eight of them).

Enthusiasts rejoice, there’s a new Z car delivering 400 horsepower from a twin turbo 3-liter V6. There are no numbers like 240 or 350, it’s just the Z now. The spacious three-row Pathfinder gets a new rugged Rock Creek model.

Toyota- Think the Corolla is just a practical vehicle? The new all-wheel drive GR Corolla is a hot hatch with 300 horsepower for your right foot to play

with. The full-sized Tundra pickup is all new for the first time in 16 years with a sophisticated laser-welded frame and new rear coil suspension. Choose from the base turbocharged V6 (dubbed i-Force) and the same engine with an electric motor sandwiched between it and the 10-speed transmission (dubbed i-Force Max hybrid).

The Corolla Cross is available in front or all-wheel-drive, plus there’s a new hybrid powertrain. The all-electric bX4X will be available in front and all-wheel drive with ranges from 221 to 252 miles.

Volkswagen- The brand recently brought its first electric vehicle to the United States. The ID.4 has 220 miles of range. For its next trick, VW adds an extra motor for all-wheel drive and an extra dollop of performance. It will be built in Chattanooga, TN. VW has shown the ID.Buzz, the spiritual successor to the much loved van.
