Chairman’s report I am honoured to have been elected the new Chairman of the Western Sydney Academy of Sport in late 2020. My role as Chairman now allows me to contribute more directly in the execution of the WSAS charter and I take great pride in providing my report on our 2020 achievements. My relationship with the WSAS has now gone back over 10 years years when I first became aware of the great work the WSAS undertook in supporting the pathway of our young and talented athletes to achieve their sporting goals as outstanding athletes of the future. The year has been one of challenge and learning for all. New ways of connecting, new ways of our athletes are gaining education, training and setting of new goals. The Academy has forged new relationships with State Sporting Organisations, battled with loosing funding from others who suffered greatly during the peak of the COVID-19 Global Pandemic in Australia through lockdowns, funding cuts and job losses, but we as an organisation are emerging through to the other side stronger and more robust in meeting these challenges through innovation and adaptability. The WSAS Board are committed to focusing on our core objectives in developing high quality programs for our athletes and aligning with the NSW Government and the NSW Institute of Sport to continually develop key strategies for athlete development. The previous 12-month period has seen the Academy provide scholarships for 184 talented local Western Sydney athletes across a range of 9 programs, with amazing results from all athletes, coaches, volunteers and supporting staff. Not to forget the huge

2

commitment from the athlete’s parents who are as equally committed to the development and success of their children’s aspirations and dreams. The Academy strives to ensure its programs are conducted in a collaborative manner and engages all our key stakeholders such as the NSW Government, Local Councils, State Sporting Organisations (SSOs), NSWIS and the AIS, and our corporate partners. It is important to recognise these stakeholders at every opportunity, and we are grateful to the NSW Government and Local Councils for their ongoing support. Accordingly, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Minister for Sport who has a strong interest in Regional Academy operations, as well as the executive and staff of the Office of Sport. All Academy programs are endorsed by the relevant SSO and each SSO provides financial/in-kind support for our programs, and on behalf of the athletes and staff of the Academy I would also like to thank these agencies for their strong support. In assessing the effectiveness of the Academy’s programs, factors such as athlete achievements and relevance of program content are key indicators and I am pleased to advise that the Western Sydney Academy can demonstrate considerable success both from an individual athlete perspective and program perspective. The introduction of the Corporate Athlete Sponsorship Program has allowed local businesses to get more involved with the young athlete’s within their area, gaining insight into their progress whilst allowing the athlete’s to engage at a business level, providing invaluable personal experiences in their development as young adults.

Western Sydney Academy of Sport | Annual Yearbook January - December 2020

The Board’s appreciation also goes to the Academy staff of CEO Martin Bullock, Athlete Program Manager Steve Hewson, and Marketing & Communications Coordinator Natalie McClelland who have worked tirelessly to ensure professional administration of the Academy’s activities. My fellow Directors continue to hold confidence in the Academy meeting its objectives effectively and efficiently, and that our key stakeholders recognise and endorse our efforts towards these goals. I would like to extend my personal thanks Alan Whelpton AO, Foundation Chairman and Life Member who has led the Academy from its inception and development to its outstanding achievements of today. The Academy would not be what it is today without the wonderful commitment and support from Alan over the past 16-years. To my fellow Board of Directors, I also extend my thanks and gratitude as they give their knowledge, experience, time and support on a voluntary basis and work with WSAS staff to ensure the effective governance and financial stability of the Academy’s operations. Finally, I wish to thank the many corporate partners the Academy has been fortunate to engage. These partners have displayed confidence in the Academy programs and their strong desire to support the region’s talented young athletes. I look forward to further success in 2021 through the participation and achievements of our athletes in the years ahead. Rod Glover Chairman

ceo’s report It gives me considerable pride and pleasure to provide this year’s annual report to all our athletes and stakeholders. In what can only be defined as extreme and extraordinary circumstances, the Academy was able to deliver significant development programs for the greater majority of our athletes and staff members. This was only achievable through the commitment and dedication of our amazing volunteer work force and our small full-time team. The COVID-19 pandemic provided – and continues to provide – a critical and ever changing management framework for our activities and the ability of our staff, athletes, volunteers and many supporting stakeholders to become adaptable, flexible and pragmatic has been highly rewarding and great affirmation of the importance of the role the Academy plays in the development of our region’s young sports people. The Academy has collaborated in a highly positive manner with its fellow Regional Academies and key stakeholders in Local and State Government agencies across NSW to ensure a consistent and high standard approach has been adopted by all Academies – ensuring safety and quality of operations. Due to the pandemic our program operations were collectively re-focused on the key areas of athlete education, well-being and resilience for all, and the overall commitment of our staff and athletes to progress along these strategic lines was indeed exceptional. While the COIVID-19 scenario required adaptation and flexibility, the Academy’s role and purpose continues to grow in recognition and significance amongst our many key stakeholders. Regional Academies across NSW continue to be recognized and aligned with elite athlete development pathways in both a strategic and practical capacity. As key strategic documents continue to 4

emerge from the NSW Government and the NSW Institute of Sport, Regional Academies are identified as critical providers of athlete services in the official development pathway. Congruently, the expectations of capability and standards for Academies is becoming greater and this places a strong focus on our operational and financial capacity. Regional Academies continue to consult and collaborate with the NSW Government’s Office of Sport, The Minister for Sport and all local Members of Parliament to ensure a recognition of our financial position and seek much required increased levels of support to enable us to meet the rapidly growing expectations. As has been the situation for many years, the Western Sydney Academy remains at the forefront of the Academy collective, with our performance indicators reflecting a successful 2020 year despite the pandemic. A large number of our athletes have displayed their growing technical talent, their knowledge and personal growth through a very long list of meritorious achievements – some outlined in this Yearbook. As was the case in 2019, a significant indicator across our sport programs is the growth of female representation, which stood at 58% of our total young athletes. The growth in AFL for girls has been a highlight, with a fairly equitable mix of male and female athletes across our other program offerings during 2020 which were AFL (juniors), AFL Women, Cycling, Golf, Netball, Netball Umpiring, Lone Star, Softball, Rowing and Triathlon. From an operational perspective, the Academy’s financial, governance, commercial and stakeholder management has been stable and enabled the delivery of our high standard programs for 218 athletes, engaging some 40 volunteers across coaching, administration and sports science.

Our 2020 sport programs featured the inclusion of a combined male and female talent Rowing Program in partnership with the Nepean Rowing Club, while collaboration with Swimming NSW, Volleyball NSW and Aus Cycling has indicated the Academy will introduce three new programs in 2021.

2020 for their amazing commitment and support for our talented young athletes. MARTIN BULLOCK Chief Executive Officer

To achieve the level of quality we strive for, the Academy is dependent on a great deal of support from our volunteers, families, community and corporate partners, as well as Local and State Government. Our principal partner the NSW Government provides tremendous financial and in-kind support through the Office of Sport, and through the advocacy and guidance of the Minister for Sport. Our Local Government members, Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Fairfield, Hawkesbury, Parramatta, Penrith and The Hills Councils – now also joined excitingly by Cumberland Council - have been unwavering in their financial and in-kind support for our program operations and recognition of their local athletes for the 16 years of our operations. Our various and numerous State Sporting Organisations also continue to collaborate and support our pathway programs, ensuring relevance of program content, focus and outcomes. I am hoping and expecting the 2021 calendar year to be a less challenging but highly rewarding year for our athlete development operations. It is important to recognise the support provided to me by our volunteer Board of Directors, and in particular our Foundation Chairman and Life Member Alan Whelpton AO, who retired in September after 16 years at the helm of our Academy. The enthusiasm of incoming Chairman Rod Glover has also been exceptional and greatly appreciated. Finally, I would like to recognise two of our long term coaches – Heather Smith (Netball) and Brett Kirk (Softball) – who were awarded Life Membership of the Academy in September Western Sydney Academy of Sport | Annual Yearbook January - December 2020

W HO W E ARE MISSION To provide talented young athletes with the skills and knowledge to assist them in fulfilling their potential - both on and off the sporting field. ACADEMY GOALS The primary goals of the Western Sydney Academy of Sport can be identified as: • •

• • •

Provide opportunities and encouragement for talented junior sports people to achieve excellence in sport. Provide these athletes with access to specialist support services including coaching, sports science and sports medicine. Endeavour to develop athletes into outstanding sports citizens. Promote Academy LGA’s as a region of sporting excellence. Play an active part in the sports development system within NSW and Australia, and assist in promoting sport and coach development at the grass-roots level.

KEY STRATEGIC ISSUES A number of key strategic issues have been identified that will drive the Academy’s planning and operations in the short term. These issues will emerge and dissipate over the next two years of development, consolidation and growth. REGIONAL ACADEMY POSITIONING It is essential that the Western Sydney Academy of Sport maintains its position as an integral part of the process by which athletes are identified, developed and given the opportunity to progress to elite level representation.

6

The Academy’s ongoing consultative and communicative relationships with key stakeholders, including State Sporting Organisations (SSOs), is a major factor in presenting the Academy’s athlete development training programs as “recommended and endorsed” by the relevant SSO. ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT PATHWAYS For the Academy to be in a position to provide meaningful and effective athlete development training programs, it is essential that the specific sport in which the athlete participates exhibits a clearly defined pathway for athletes to progress from Regional Academy to national level representation. The planning and implementation of Academy programs is dependent on the cooperation of SSOs and the ability to ensure integration of its program content and resources into the athlete pathway through to elite levels.

Western Sydney Academy of Sport | Annual Yearbook January - December 2020

SPORTS DEVELOPMENT National and State Sporting Organisations are progressing rapidly in respect of providing professional and efficient athlete development frameworks that offer clearly identifiable roles for Regional Academies. SSOs are developing a more specific focus on desired outcomes and objectives associated with Academy partnerships, including national curriculum content, coach development and talent identification. CORPORATE AND STAKEHOLDER SUPPORT The Academy is an independent, not-for-profit association which has the capacity to generate independent income streams, whilst at the same time obtaining some benefits associated with its previous attachment to State Government. As a small NFP organisation, the Academy must compete for the corporate dollar against National level professional sporting organisations as well as the multitude of State and District sporting bodies all seeking to leverage corporate relationships within their spheres of activity. Therefore the Academy must define its position from a marketing perspective and focus its support attraction on an achievable and relevant level. FINANCIAL VIABILITY In seeking to provide development opportunities for talented athletes in western Sydney, the Academy will consider the financial viability of each program - both existing and proposed. Athlete development programs must exhibit an ability to obtain funding from SSOs, athlete contributions and corporate support, as a means of ensuring the Academy’s funds are distributed equitably and effectively across the desired number of sports.
