SPEED SERIES 201 FINAL REPORT t was all down to the wire at the LDMC Anglesey event on the 8th / and 9th of October, with the Overall Championship still to be decided. The rain and then damp conditions on the Saturday meant that it was declared I a 'wet' event with maximum scores of I 100 for the winner of each class. This decided the winner as Stuart

Hill, second placed John Loudon had desperately need the 102 points that a good result could have given. The Sunday dried and was a good event, with some excellent runs and a desperate battle between Tim (sideways) Nunn and Mark Anson in class G with Mark just piping Tim on the last run after a re-run.

The Awards Night has just happened and from the responses already it would seem that people really enjoyed the new venue and format of the evening. The previous Hotel having forced the change with their inflexibility on numbers. Congratulations to all those who took part in the WSCC Speed Series 2011, it was another great year with 511

competitor/events which is great to see as very similar to previous years. It's the intention of the Speed Series I Organising Team not to change much of any significance on the rule front; we think it's about right! NickAlsar\ WSCC Championship Coordinator

CARBS TO BIKE TBs by Rab (bombero) Reid After a chat over a coffee and cake, I settled on GSXR750 42mm throttle bodies mated to a Bogg Bros inlet manifold, ported and polished head, Newman 270° cams with competition springs, all controlled by the new K6 software incorporating a shiftlight and map selector, from Emerald. Other conversion related work involved replacing the fuel system to accept the new high pressure system (i.e. return fuel line, high pressure pump, additional filtering, HP regulator). There was/is much discussion on the forum regarding the need for a swirl pot. Although, in principle, I understand how one works, I also debate its absolute necessity and I opted not to fit one; the car has been running like this now since putting it back on the road in April with no issues. The results: Getting the car up and running proved to be a cinch (thankfully) and the next stage was to get it on a rolling road for some figures. Johnathon of JDM Dyno (www.jdmdyno.com) in Wigton, Cumbria provided the rolling road and fine tuning to the Emerald base map, and the very pleasing results that surpassed even my own and Andy's expectations — 209bhp <s 6550rpm and 174ftlb torque @ 4800rpm, I had a simple set of expectations from my finished project - more power, which equates to approximately 288bhp/ ton with me as ballast! more responsive, tractable (flexible enough to be driven hard and sedately with ease), more economical than carbs and well within tolerances to be reliable to simply 'jump into and turn the key'. Enter a friend Andy Entwistle, owner of HiFlowHeads (www.hiflowheads. co.uk) in Athelstaneford, East Lothian. Andy's current regular work mainly involves the gasflowing of heads (hence the company name), but a number of years ago, this expanded to throttle body and big turbo conversions and complete engine rebuilds. Familiar to the Peugeot and Citroen fraternity, Andy also has a passion for kitcars, the sevens in particular (he's currently finishing off his own Firebladeengined MK Indy).

The inlet manifold is a work of art and the throttle bodies were slightly spaced out (by Bogg Bros) and manifold suited to make the whole set-up more in-keeping with the head. At the same time, the vacuum ports in the bodies were soldered over and the valve latches extended3, the secondary valves removed and holes soldered and smoothed. I'm very pleased with the level of workmanship on this piece alone!

1 A fe([ chaps, we stand upon the ^f^f brink of a great historic change in our esteemed organisation. Yes, for the first time within my membership of the WSCC (cough...did I spend all that in 10 years?!) Westfield World is dropping the every-othermonth publication dates in favour of the quarterly format. I'm not sure about how I feel about that to be honest, but at least it will mean that I'll only miss four deadlines in 2012 rather than the now de rigueur six (sorry Peter). Anyways, due to being on a course last week and playing catch up over this weekend, I'm late for the deadline for this issue but I'm typing fast. We left the action in the last report after our most successful tyre shredding event of the year (Alconbury) leaving just enough tread for the Javelin track day on 29th October. Prior to that Cleggy, Dave, Tony and myself met up at The Old Ferryboat on the 9th October for our usual foursome (quiet table in the corner you know) to discuss matters of lubrication, friction and rubber wear. Cleggy updated us on the progress of fitting his new cage and was having issues with his nuts (among other things) which Tony and Dave helped out with.

PAGE 6

Following on from Alconbury Cleggy continued the self-destructive upgrade path transforming his once standard Duratec SEiW from comfy road blaster to ever more focused track car (Cage, GRP seats, LSD ect) and was hoping to have it all nailed back together for the Javelin RAF Cottesmore track day later in the month. He'll have it up for sale soon and buy a VX220, improbable I know but it happens. I brought along the VX220 to the pub and much to my surprise arrived there fractionally before I left home, I'm understanding the need to exercise a little more caution with the loud pedal but I like the whine of the blower too much. We departed the pub around 21:30 having exhausted the topic of tweaking Cleggy's nuts and I arrived home at 21:29, not bad as I was taking it easy in the dark (oh the whine ) The next meeting was to be 30th October but this was changed to the 29th from the 30th because most of the regular attendees had booked in for the Javelin track day at RAF Cottesmore on the 29th. From the usual Cambridge area Cleggy, Dave and Sean, Tony, Bryan and Steve (among others) had booked on, so I took a run up to the circuit to have a look-

due to a nasty virus infecting literally every file on my computer. I took the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 7 (good choice) and reinstall all my software. Since then I have had problems with emails not getting through. I email a reminder about our meetings to the Black Country members every month so if any of you are not receiving them can you please check that your

security software is not blocking my I email address? (don.homeroblueyonder. | co.uk) Can you then send me an email and I'll check I haven't missed you off j the mailing list. That's it for this issue. Wishing everyone a merry Christmas and A Happy New Year! Don

see and grab a few passenger rides (the Westy scratch needed to be itched). Among others present were Jeff C, Madteg, Andrew, Filfan, Hammy, Paul, lain, Dan, and Steve H instructing. It was nice to put a few more names to ; faces. IRRC there was 15 Westies and a plethora of other '7' types gathered for a damn good thrashing. The Javelin setup looked very professional and the track mixed some good twisty stuff with a few good straights and ran to about three miles in total, it looked good from the passenger seat and those who I sat next to seemed to be having a lot of fun.

To put that into perspective, Sean's Quantum hit 110mph (150BHP Pinto) and Cleggy's Duratec (190bhp) hit 120mph at the same braking point. Not much else was circulating as fast as Dave. I took off about 3:00pm but the fun continued to 5:00pm. It looked like the attrition rate was fairly high, I suspect that about a quarter of the total number of cars were out of action by the time I left including Cleggy's car that broke a drive flange on the last run. Judging by the posts on the Cottesmore thread all the other combatants had a good time and this venue is fast becoming a favourite amongst the trackies in the club. I hope to get the VX up there in the new year.

I managed to get passenger rides with Tony (in Cleggy's car), Cleggy in his car after Tony had added about SOkgs of the infield to it (nice relaxing spin that one!!!!), Sean in the Quantum, and Dave in his TurboR! Locost. Of the three, it's Dave's Locost that impressed the most. The acceleration is seamless, does not seem to diminish as the car goes through the gears and it was pulling max RPM (on the limiter) at 136mph before braking at the end of the main straight.

We are currently arranging the events for the last part of the season with the 16th of November being a Wed meeting at the Ferryboat, the 27th November should be a run to the Brooklands Motor Museum at Weybridge. The Christmas do will be on the 11th of December and that will wind up the events for 2011. The next issue of WW will hit the doormat in March 2012 so until then have a good year end, a good Christmas and a prosperous new year. Chaz

Well, the end of season, tail end of the | year so pretty quiet but here goes: Buck Barn to the Greasy Spoon Blatt: I Tried out a new route for this blatt. j Worked out well, apart from losing Steve R and Dean M half way through due to; slooooooow traffic and horse-boxes moving at a pace that would embarrass j a sick snail. Pretty good route that allowed everyone to catch up with their [ shopping and gave Steve L and m'self a bit of exercise. Some of the roads need another look, but at an earlier time of day due to said I traffic. Brekkie was good and we got in [ just before the rush and, oddly two minutes before Steve and Dean arrived from their alternate route - a pretty darn good run with an excellent turnout.

DAVE JPS AND THE STOCK CAR EVENT: Dave organised a bit of an evening blatt to deepest Sussex to a Speedway/Oval track for a Stockcar event, we even got our own special parking spots for the four Westys (Dave, Jason D, Nigel and me)! There were two classes running for the evening, Classic Bangers and Bangers. The classic cars actually raced (Shock, horror) rather than crashed and played pretty fair with each other apart from the car whose front nearside wheel fell off - twice.

was my favourite) chaining the car to the bed of a lorry and using the crane to pull it back into shape — great fun. GRAHAM B AND THE DORSET BLATT Graham had sorted out a route that was epic' if in nothing else then certainly in

distance! This was a run originally set for July, but due to holidays/weather it • was delayed. The main goals were to blatt down \ and up Zigzag Hill and not get too wet in ; the process. Well, one out of two can't ! be bad. Dean M joined Graham on this j Herculean road trip and they did indeed get to blatt on the Hill and also get jolly wet in the process - rain, rain, rain. By the sound of it, they had a great day out and travelled some rather saucy roads, (and covered over 300 miles — THREE HUNDRED MILES!), now that's what I call a blatt. GOODWOOD BREAKFAST CLUB I missed this one, but the Chaps had a good time. Much talk of rather nice cars and divine RBFYB™ munchies but no pictures... OCTOBER CLUB MEETING A pretty good turnout and we finally got to meet Mike B and his rather good Zetec Westy. The weather was co-operating (we had a family do to go to afterwards so didn't bring the Westy, damn it!) But we had a pleasant afternoon looking in engine bays and chatting in the sunshine...

The Bangers all seem to have magnets arranged at strategic points around their cars as they just could not keep away from each other, crashing seem to be the default setting for this class.

The evening started at 1930 and finished at 2300, all for £14. Not bad at all for all that mayhem and crushed metal. The best bit was walking around the pits between races and seeing the hi-tech repairs going on, which mostly involved rather large sledge hammers or (and this

GRAHAM B AND THE 'WAY OUT EAST' BLATT - MARK TWO Graham seems to have hit a critical mass here and can't stop arranging blatts! (And many thanks to him for doing so). Graham, Steve L, Adam R, Ken J and Gary L braved the bitterly cold weather and had a run out across East Sussex/ Kent on some excellent and traffic free roads. Apparently 'Breakfast was had' more than once going on the pictures!

This was j only happening on the offside and so I checked to ensure I had been given all the same offsets, I had, they were all the 38mm required for running on MX5 running gear! Next I gave the wheel geometry a quick check, but as it had been set up by Lunar Motorsport that I THE SURREY AREA FORUM & WEBSITE was perfect too. They rib to sandwich between the body and I varied from £500'ish wheel arch, the attached photo being r!S to £250'ish which is the result. All I need to do now is find 'quite a lot' for some sticky-back plastic. some way of camouflaging the slightly I was then reminded of a company unorthodox solution, any suggestions? in Ashford, Kent, called Henwood Signs. Now this company is 60 motorway miles from my home and a long way to got on the off-chance that they could (a) do the job and (b) the cost would be 'do-able'. So an email and a couple of photos of what was required later and a very quick reply came back with a price of just £150! The work was done a few days later and the car now looks like this....

ADAM R - A HOLIDAY TALE

It was time again for my annual pilgrimage to find the best driving roads in Europe, this year we were heading for Austria and Switzerland to roads like the Timmelsjoch, Grimselpass and the Stelvio. Seven countries in seven days. Day 1: Kent to Stuttgart Really early start, in the rain, meet up with the other people that are also on the holiday to drive to the Channel Tunnel. This year we have a Porsche Turbo, Porsche GT3, BMW M3 CSL, Audi RS4 Avant, Abarth 500 EsseEsse, my FROM BRIAN S: OVER RUBBERED OR Westie, and a Porsche Cayenne Diesel. WHAT? Today was motorway all the way, a Having finished my build in 2009 I 'getting there' day, and luckily as soon as we were in France the rain stopped decided for its 'birthday' my Westfield and there was blue sky. 450 miles later should have a new set of wheels and we got to our first hotel, the V8 hotel, tyres! I eventually decided to go for which was in a car museum, Meilenwerk. a set of Team Dynamics 15" x 7" Silver We were lucky to get a free upgrade wheels to match the chrome roll bar etc, and to compensate for an over-reading to their themed rooms, so I spent the speedo, put on a set of Toyo Proxes T1 Rs night in a 1960/70's Mercedes in a car wash, with a view from my window over 205x55R15's. the car museum, petrolhead heaven! On the day the new wheels arrived Day 2: Stuttgart to Obergurgl I shot over to collect the newly shod wheels and fitted them to the Westfield. Woke up to another beautiful day (as it would be for almost the entire holiday), I let them down to 20psi from the 30psi to make our way to Austria. As we had the fitter put in them and got out on the covered a lot of miles on day one, we open road, leaving my old 195x 55 R14's could now get to the interesting stuff. on 5.5" rims on the driveway.
