Recipe - Chicken Caesar Salad This is one of the classic salads; it was actually invented in Mexico by a chef named Caesar! The addition of chicken turns it into a great light lunch. It is one of my favourite salads and is often on my own restaurant’s menu at lunch – sometimes with home smoked chicken. Ingredients: 2 cooked chicken breasts 2 x Baby gem lettuce or 1 x Romaine lettuce 150g Mayonnaise 8 anchovies 2 tbsp Worcester sauce 100g grated parmesan plus extra for shaving 2 cloves garlic Juice of 1 lemon Salt & pepper Croutons – cube stale bread and drizzle with oil, season and bake in an oven at about 150C until golden and crunchy
Method: Place the mayonnaise, garlic, anchovies, Worcester sauce, grated parmesan and half of the lemon juice in a food processor. Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust with the remaining lemon juice, salt and pepper. Cut the root end of the lettuce off and separate the leaves; leave out any soft outer leaves and use only the more yellow inner leaves which are crunchy and sweeter. Place the leaves in a mixing bowl and spoon in as much sauce as you like to coat the leaves – toss them in the bowl until coated. Slice the chicken and warm in an oven for 2-3 minutes. Place the coated leaves in a serving bowl and sprinkle the croutons over. Then add the strips of chicken, the anchovies and shave extra parmesan over the top.

RSPCA Halifax/Huddersfield & District Go Local’s Pet of the Month Appeal CARLEY
Carley came into the Animal Centre via the Inspectors after there were concerns over her welfare. Carley was kept in an indoor dog crate and hardly ever walked or socialized. She has previously lived with another dog and a 12 years old child. Carley is very excitable around other dogs and forgets her manners, for this reason we would recommend that in her new home she is the only dog. Carley is a friendly but very excitable girl who loves to
play with soft toys and raggers. Carley will be an excellent project for someone who would like to do some training with their pet, she is very nice natured but lacks basic training. We are looking for a family with older children who can give Carley the loving home she deserves. Branston who featured in the April edition is still looking for a new home.
Please see: www.rspca-halifaxandhuddersfield.org.uk and for details on other pets who are also need a good home or ring 01422 365628

Ducks £1 each on sale at Stainland Pharmacy, Duke of York, Rose & Crown and at Bowling Green school. Organised by Bowling Green School Association. All money raised goes to the school.
Saturday 7th June - Elland Lane Children’s Treat – revived! Eighty years ago people living in and around Elland Lane came together and established an annual event known as Elland Lane Children’s Treat. Now local people have decided to revive the event which will be held at Huddersfield Amateur Football Club, Old Earth, Elland. Old photographs (see the one above) show this to be exactly the same spot as in 1934 and the present day committee meet in the same place as the 1934 committee, the Spring Gardens pub!! From historical records, we know that in 1949, the procession started in Quebec Street, led by the Fire Brigade. Also taking part was a character called :”Donkey” Morton, with his horse and cart - he covered his face with jam first. He sold ice-cream from his cart. The treat had a fancy dress competition then they went to the Old Earth field for egg and spoon races, 3-legged races, and sack races! In 2014, there will be “Sorbie Balls” in which children can bounce around, five-a-side football and a penalty shoot out pitch and Mountain biking. Compass Bridge
will take children canoeing and there will be charity stalls from Overgate and Yorkshire Air Ambulance, a half size monster truck will be present and a racing car, fire engine and Police van. A selection of refreshments will be available, traditional music will be provided by a vintage fairground organ. Many local companies have helped to sponsor the event. We look forward to welcoming young and old to this free event, and to re-establishing this piece of local traditional culture.

Wind and Hot Air – a Physicist’s perspective by Professor of Physics at the University of Huddersfield, Bob Cywinski
Three 99.5m high turbines are proposed for the Scammonden skyline. This month we give the opinion of an internationally respected scientist on this issue that is dividing communities in Calderdale and elsewhere. “In terms of local planning issues there are few issues more controversial than wind turbines and wind farm projects. Both proposers and protesters claim they are protecting the environment – the former by reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that contribute to climate change and the latter by saving the landscape and ecology of our wild places from industrial scale developments. This has set neighbour against neighbour in heated battles that can last for months or even years. The drive to build industrial scale wind farms in some of our country’s most beautiful and unspoiled areas is perhaps often driven not by a deep understanding of energy provision or climate change, but by the baser instincts of guilt or greed: Guilt that we are “destroying the planet” and greed for the generous subsidies and feed-in tariffs that are provided by a deeply flawed national energy policy. One of the central claims of the pro-wind lobby is that wind turbines will reduce the amount of climatechanging CO2 that we pump into the atmosphere. So it’s useful to take an unbiased mathematical approach to how much of a contribution to “saving the planet” a wind turbine might make and then leave you, the reader, to decide whether this is worth the detrimental effects a development has on wildlife, archaeology, visual amenity and leisure in a unspoilt area. Using official figures provided by the Government’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and RenewableUK (the UK’s leading renewable energy trade association), a typical 100m high 2MW turbine could produce up to 17.5 million kilo Watt hour (kWh) of electricity per year. The corresponding saving in CO2 emissions is an impressive 2000 metric tonnes. However, this is a generous estimate as it assumes a turbine load factor of 27% (the average for both offshore and onshore wind) and it does not take into account the CO2
produced by the necessary back-up generation for this intermittent energy source, nor that resulting from electricity actually drawn from the grid to power the turbines. Let us look at this CO2 saving of 2 thousand tonnes per year in perspective: The UK’s national emissions of CO2 are 553 million tonnes per year (1.5% of total global emissions). So, a large industrial 2MW turbine will save less than 4 parts in one million of the UK’s total. Or to put it another way, we would need almost 3000 of these 2MW turbines to save just 1% of the UK’s current annual carbon emissions. More worryingly the UK has agreed to reducing CO2 emissions by 394 million tonnes per year by 2050. To meet this target with wind power would require almost 200 thousand 2MW turbines. Such a development would occupy 97 thousand square kilometres, or the equivalent of the whole of the UK coastline to a depth of 5km. Clearly the task of providing clean efficient and reliable energy that we currently face is enormous. Can we do it with wind power? The answer is clearly no. Wind does have a part to play in the energy mix of the UK, but a more coherent and regulated development of wind energy is needed. No technology is in itself good or bad, and wind energy is no exception, but it is how and where that technology is deployed that needs both careful thought and independent scrutiny. Both pro-wind and anti-wind lobbyists, local planners, politicians, and you, the general public, should really address the question of whether piecemeal industrial scale wind developments that save only a few parts per million of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions are really worth the sacrifice of our local landscapes, or whether such developments contribute far too little at far too high an environmental price. To answer this question we really need a measured debate not the misplaced zeal, fanatical rhetoric and the fundamental misunderstanding of the scale of the problem and its potential solutions that we have at the moment.”
