PEARSON STRONGLY AGAINST LABOUR & LIB DEM PARKING CHARGES Community Campaigner & Greetland & Stainland Ward Conservative candidate, Chris Pearson is vehemently opposed to the new and increased parking charges being forced upon Calderdale, in particular our local area. Just as West Vale is beginning to grow and develop, following an influx of new businesses and investment into the area, all the hard work of local people is being threatened by the short sighted parking charge measures. However, it is worth remembering that Conservatives opposed the increase of parking charges in Calderdale. It is ONLY happening because the Lib Dems supported Labour at Cabinet whilst they were running the Council (just before they fell out!). Figures compiled by the RAC Foundation on Parking Income for Calderdale Council show that £4.48 MILLION was taken from the pockets of us, local motorists, in the year 2012/13. This left a SURPLUS of £1.15 MILLION for the year 2012/13 and a STAGGERING £3.4 MILLION surplus over the previous 3 years! The RAC calculated these figures by adding up income from parking charges and penalty notices and then deducted the running costs. However, over the same period investment on local roads has fallen in the region of 9% and on road safety measures an eye-watering 20%. “I am disgusted that Labour & Lib Dem Councillors in Calderdale hold motorists with such utter contempt and see us as cash-cows when they should be getting to grips on cutting the massive waste and inefficiencies that we can all see within the Council” says Chris.

“Expert by Experience”
Project for Stroke Survivors Keen painter Arnold Ratcliffe has been able to fulfil his dream of exhibiting his work thanks to Scope’s Expert by Experience mentoring project which is being run across Calderdale. Arnold, 83, from Mytholmroyd, has always been keen painter. He is living with Parkinson’s disease and is a stroke survivor. Each week he meets his mentor Ian McPhail, also from Mytholmroyd, to discuss composition and use first hand sources and Ian’s photographs as inspiration for the artwork. Arnold has showcased 12 of his paintings at the Hope Street Resource Centre in Halifax. The exhibition showed scenes from local landscapes including Stoodley Pike and the Rochdale Canal. Ian and Arnold are members of Scope’s Expert by Experience Project. It is a peer mentoring support service designed to support stroke survivors across Calderdale. Mentoring Co-ordinator Heather Barham said: “Expert by Experience is a great way for stroke survivors to work towards achieving their personal goals. Ian and Arnold’s partnership shows how a weekly meeting can really bring a positive difference to the lives of people who have been affected.” “We have an urgent need to recruit more mentors to the scheme across Calderdale. Specific skills and interests we are looking for include fishing, walking, family history, local history, creative writing and getting to grips with technology.”
social group with a supportive mentor and making a skirt for a Christmas party!” A full programme of training is offered to anyone wishing to get involved, as well as on-going supervision and support to develop your skills. The course includes sessions examining personal values and attitudes, communication techniques, safeguarding, boundaries and confidentiality. We have places available on our next training programme for mentors which starts on 7 May 2014. The service is free and runs on weekdays. Anybody who has been affected by stroke and would like to explore how they could access some extra support is also invited to contact us. This year we are also planning to set up a supported walking group for those affected by stroke. Get in touch if you would like to explore becoming either a mentor or mentee or just want to find out more about the service. For more details call Mentoring Coordinator Heather Barham on 01422 367544 or email heather.barham@scope. org.uk or drop into Hope Street Resource Centre in Halifax Arnold Ratcliffe with his mentor Ian McPhail at the Art Exhibition at Hope Street in Halifax

RSPCA Halifax/Huddersfield & District Go Local’s Pet of the Month Appeal JESS
Jess is a 2 year old SBT. She came into the animal centre via the Inspectors. She has had a very miserable life so far due to being beaten in her previous home. She is quite an excitable girl who is friendly with staff and volunteers. Jess loves nothing more than to have a cuddle and will let you stroke her all day if you could. She also loves to bring you toys so that you can play with her. She walks well on a lead and knows her basic commands and will respond well if she gets a treat. Jess is very good in the car she loves nothing
more than to put her head out of the window to get some air. Jess is very good in a house; she is fully house trained and settles well on a night. We are looking for an adult home or a home with older children. If you could offer Jess a loving home please call in to see her. Riley who featured in the last edition has now been rehomed.
Please see: www.rspca-halifaxandhuddersfield.org.uk and for details on other pets who are also need a good home or ring 01422 365628 RSPCA Halifax & Hudds - Have You Heard About EARS? Lots of elderly animals come into the RSPCA centres each year and whether they have been loved and cared for or removed from awful situations, they deserve a loving home as much as our younger animals. Elderly animals tend to get over looked, so the EARS (elderly animal re homing scheme) tries to prevent them becoming stressed bay placing them in foster homes. There is a fantastic local team of fosterers who give up their home and time to help EARS animals until they find new homes. As a fosterer you get the animal’s food, medical treatment and equipment provided, in return you get the reward of helping a scared, confused and unhappy elderly dog or cat to feel safe and loved again. If you would like to become part of our fostering team or think you could offer a home to one of our golden oldies, please contact us on 01422 365628

Managing your money-no easy task This month John offers advice, on behalf of Brighter Financial Services Ltd on that difficult topic—money management! Happy New Year! Well the economic forecast for this year is not all doom and gloom, it seems and there is growth (albeit cautious) on the horizon for the UK. This will not be much re-assurance however, for those counting the cost of Christmas or facing large winter fuel bills. Tackle the debt Managing money, especially when there always feels to be much less coming in that going out is hard but try to tackle the debts first. A strange piece of advice you may think when you have debt because of the lack of money, but the interest you pay out on debts is far more than the interest you earn on savings and so it is worth sitting down and considering where to put your money in 2014: Take the following scenario for example: £1000 you spend on a credit card will mean £180 in interest paid back by you.
£1000 you put in a savings account attracting 2% interest after tax will mean £20 in interest paid to you. Of course there are zero and low % credit cards around to avoid the massive interest trap but as a general rule of thumb, debt will mean you pay out more than you are able to save and so get rid of the debt first, unless of course the debt is so much that there is no point. Think differently about financial products There are still many people who feel more confident in relying on their bank or regular provider to help with their financial arrangements. However, there are many products now available, on-line, through supermarkets, via dedicated financial product providers, so it is worth shopping around. The figures (GoCompare.com) speak for themselves, in that people just don’t feel confident in doing this : • 21% have never switched their mortgage lender • 21% have never switched their ISA or Savings accounts • 18% have never switched credit cards • 11% of consumers have never switched their home insurance In reality, this means that nearly a quarter of people have not considered the important relationship between the money we spend on debt and the money we save. If we are to make the most of the latter then we need to review all our loans and debts so that we can 1. Pay them off by the speediest, most cost effective way 2. Carefully consider our options when saving the surplus for those rainy days/little emergencies. Don’t give up on savings In these cash strapped times people are switching from ISA’s and long term savings and placing any

Business, IT & Professional | 25 spare cash in Current Account Access Savings accounts but it could just be that a re-look at some of your current pension and insurance products could help you continue to pay into an ISA. The point is that doing one thing—switching a savings account to Instant Access should not be done in isolation from another, especially an all-round look at everything you have – pensions, mortgage, insurance etc and just going back to what was said at the beginning, should definitely not be done in isolation of a whole re-think on debt. Looking at the whole of your financial picture will sound time consuming and costly but this may not turn out to be the case. You could do it yourself, if you have the time to look through everything and contact providers, but if you were
to use independent financial advisers to help you it may not cost you anything and is more than likely to save you money in the long run. Remember, we want what you want ................ money working as hard as it can to give you the best return it can. So, in summary, make your money work for you in 2014.don’t be put off taking a look at all your financial affairs, —there are advisers skilled in this sort of thing who can help you. Finally,—keep a check on interest rates and product costs—these are often overlooked and can mount up making savings meaningless as interest pay back increases.

Recipe - Pork Pie Boil the lard, milk & water, add salt & flour and beat with a spoon until it comes together. Turn out onto a work surface and knead gently; be careful as it will be hot.
If you have never tried a homemade pork pie then take an hour or two out of your life and make one! They are nothing short of sensational and are so different to the shop bought equivalent. This recipe makes a large one using a 9inch cake tin. You can of course make several smaller ones. Ingredients: 1kg Diced Pork Shoulder, 100g Smoked Streaky Bacon, 200g Smoked Gammon 1.5 tsp Anchovy Essence 1 tsp Mace, ½ tsp Allspice ½ tsp each of Salt & Pepper 1 tbsp Fresh Sage – Chopped, 4 leaves of gelatine 700g Strong Flour, 1 tsp Salt, 75 ml Milk + 75ml Water, 225g Lard - diced, Egg yolk to glaze Method: Poach the ham in 500ml of water, remove the cooked ham and keep the warm stock. Take the cooked ham, pork and bacon and chop into small pieces by hand and mix in the seasonings thoroughly.
Push three quarters of the dough into the cake tin or pie moulds quickly before it cools down. Roll out the remaining pastry to make lids. Place the coarse meat filling into the moulded pastry case until almost full. Brush the edge of the pastry with the egg yolk, place the lid(s) on and push onto the top of pie(s) and press the edges with a fork. Brush with egg yolk. Bake for about one hour at 170oc until golden brown and fully cooked inside. A probe should read at least 70C. Soak the gelatine in cold water until soft and squidgy – about 5-8 minutes. Heat the ham stock and add the gelatine after wringing it out. Poke a deep hole in the top of the pie and pour in as much of the stock as possible; this makes the jelly in the pie. Leave to cool and enjoy with some watercress and homemade beetroot chutney.

“A question I asked myself was, if I continue to do what I am currently doing and nothing changes, what will my life look like in 5 years time? The cost of living is going up and the majority of incomes are not increasing at the same rate. Most people trade their time for money – work an hour and get paid an hour and there is too much month left at the end of the money. The awards hand-pick those who stand out from the crowd and deserve recognition as a world-class player. Saks is up for Beauty Salon Of The Year and Employer Of The Year and will find out its fate at a glittering black-tie gala dinner in London next month.
Saks has a special place in the hearts of Calderdale residents. It was started in 1974 by Malcolm Hanson and Dennis Cheesebrough and has gone on to become the UK’s leading hair and beauty group. Malcolm, was born in Halifax, and sadly died last month.
In the meantime Becky is hoping her salon will be recognised by Saks itself . The company holds its own awards ceremony every year and Saks Beauty has been entered in four categories - Salon Of The Year, Customer Care/ Marketing and two individual therapist awards.
Becky says she hopes Malcolm would be proud of what her Halifax salon has already achieved and could go on to win. “It really is a dream come true to make the final of the Professional Beauty Awards 2014. The cream of the crop win these awards and I am honoured to have reached the final. “
Becky set up her own business 10 years ago within the former Saks hairdressers in Halifax town centre. In 2011 she made history when she opened the first Saks stand alone beauty salon in the country. She transformed a former fashion shop into a fourroom salon and now employs six staff. Her hard work was rewarded when she was named a winner
Becky believes she has reached the final because of her team’s hard work. “We have passion and expertise and this shows in our treatments. We keep ourselves at the top of our game by researching new treatments and trends and keep our clients wanting more. We also make everyone who steps through the door feel special and have offers on all year round so people get good value for money.” She is planning to take her team to London for the gala dinner and says her ultimate ambition has always been for her salon to be recognised as one of the best in the country. Saks use her as a mentor and ambassador and her future plans involve adding more beauty rooms next year, and setting up a website. Becky and husband Tim, and their 19-month-old son, Ruudy have just moved to Ripponden and love the village. She is a firm believer in using local shops and says she hopes people from the Ripponden Valley will pop in for a treatment or just to say hello.

100 years ago – the first tram arrives There is much to commemorate this year but we should not overlook the centenary of the first tram to arrive in Elland. A quick recap – the Halifax tram arrived in West Vale in 1905. The potential hazards of Salterhebble and the railway bridge on Stainland Road had been easily beaten but Halifax Corporation and Elland Council would not budge during the negotiations to pay for the route to travel into Elland via Long Wall. It was definitely a case of six of one and a half-dozen of the other so we won’t linger over that squabble. Elland looked southwards for a solution. The Huddersfield tram already travelled as far as Birchencliffe and the distance to Elland Town Hall was only 1 ½ miles. Once the respective parties had agreed their share of the costs the work began on 25th September 1913. Thanks to good weather during the winter months the new track was completed by January 1914. The Board of Trade granted a licence for the route to operate after only one test run. There had been some local concern about a tram traversing the Ainley’s incline but Elland Council had paid for road widening to alleviate the top bend. Wednesday 14th January 1914 – an excited crowd of over 5,000 waited near the Town Hall for the first tram to arrive. (This event was filmed and this film is stored in the Yorkshire Archive). Councillors Sam Lumb and Sidney Thornton had given their employees a half-day holiday. The press report states that schoolchildren were present so we can assume that the schools closed such was the sense of occasion. Unfortunately the sky was black and there was a steady downpour of rain but this did not dim the crowd’s spirits although the reporter wrote that the sight of 1,500 umbrellas was not picturesque! At Birchencliffe Alderman Aston (Huddersfield Tramways Committee) switched on the current and declared the new section open - ‘It was a pleasure for Huddersfield to bring their cars to Elland, and he hoped it would bring the two towns into closer
union.’ The fare from Elland to Huddersfield would cost 3d (about £1 in today’s money). Once the tram, decorated and flying a flag, had descended the Ainleys Cllr Lumb took the ‘reins’. It was soon in view of the crowd. The rain eased to a drizzle. The umbrellas went down. The call went forth ‘It’s coming’. Cheer after cheer echoed as Cllr Lumb brought the tram to a halt at the Town Hall terminus. Three cheers were raised for Huddersfield and its council then another three for Ald Aston. The dignitaries then retired to Elland Constitutional Club for a celebratory luncheon. Cllr Lumb’s and Thornton’s employees were treated to a free journey on the next cars to arrive. After the delays and upsets a regular tram service now operated to Elland. All were happy...bar Halifax Corporation, who fumed at a lost opportunity. David J. Don’t lose money through your roof! As homeowners, we don’t always think too much about our roof, so long as it keeps out the rain and snow. But thousands of people are wasting up to £500 every year without realising it. As energy prices continue to go through the roof, so does your money if your loft / attic conversion or ‘room in the roof’ is not properly insulated. This especially applies to homes of approximately 100 years of age where a loft conversion was installed before even basic insulation was commonplace. Introducing the roof that pays for itself…. Designed and developed by Ploughcroft, ECO ROOF™ is a unique high quality system with the added benefit of a total re-roof to solve the problem of heat loss through the attic roof. ECO ROOF™ uses the latest technology which is proven to have the most cost effective insulation properties available. Insulation takes place from the outside where the double layered insulation is secured under the slates or tiles, so there is no mess or need to redecorate inside. With interest rates likely stay at record low levels for a long time to come, it is hard to find an investment opportunity that even keeps pace with inflation. We are confident that investing in your home with ECO ROOF™ will be one of the best financial decisions you will ever make. Could you be entitled to financial help to install an ECO Roof? Funding is available to households in certain areas. This could contribute up to 40% of the cost of installing an ECO Roof. The Carbon Saving Community Obligation (CSCo) targets households in specified areas to help improve energy efficiency standards. To check whether you live in a qualifying area please complete the free energy efficiency assessment on the home page of our web site at www.ploughcroft.co.uk.

Opinion
Sell, Sell, Sell… Please Stop, Stop, Stop! Following my house being flooded a few months ago, I feel I really must tell you about my experiences replacing my ruined possessions. First up is DFS, or Dreadful Flippin’ Sofas as they are convivially known. I bought two sofas off them, which aren’t at all dreadful and I must be the perfect customer. I went online and ploughed through the huge range of colours and choices then made a trip to my local shop to make sure my chosen sofa was comfy. Only after all this did I phone to place my order. I expected it to be a straightforward matter of handing over my card details – job done! Instead the call started with a lengthy lecture about the leather quality. Bemused and a bit bored, I started to doze off until I was rudely awakened by the words “an extra £500.” Wondering what I had agreed to, I started to panic a bit, but it turned out that this was the cost of upgrading to “Luxury” leather. I politely declined… four times!
a shop is a captive audience practically begging for an upsell, where profit margins are huge. They probably have a point; after all, the DFS man persuaded me to spend a £32 on 8 circles of sticky backed felt! What they don’t realise is how annoying this is. They also didn’t realise that I had other goods to buy. So, for my new washing machine and dishwasher I used a local retailer. Their prices and range of stock were much the same. The difference was, when I phoned to place my order, the man was so thrilled that I wanted to buy something that, far from trying to sell me things I didn’t need, he gave me a discount. I also need to buy another sofa, but it won’t be from DFS. The moral of the tale is, just because someone wants to buy something, it doesn’t mean they want to be sold to. Howard Clemmow
The conversation moved on to cleaning the leather and again my eyes start to grow heavy. Eventually I realised he was trying to flog me a cleaning kit, a snip at £78, so I declined, a little less politely. Undeterred, he launched into a description of the horrendous scratches the feet of the sofas could inflict on my wooden floors, something easily avoided for only £32 for felt pads to stick on the bottom of them. Fearing for my sanity, I agreed. Chastened by this experience, I moved on to buying a new fridge from Currys. Cleverly, I decided to buy online so nobody would have the chance to sell to me. Unfortunately, as soon as I entered my card details, the screen went blank and took me back to the home page; I didn’t know whether I’d bought a fridge or not. Regretfully, I phoned the helpline. The man on the phone assured me my order had been processed and then took the opportunity to enquire what I knew about their extended warranty scheme. The fact that it cost 50% of the price of the fridge was all I needed to know, but it still took five refusals before I could get him off the phone. The problem is that the large retail chains all employ sales gurus to train up their customer service staff. They preach that anyone who walks into

Property - They’re all the range As I have said before, the kitchen should be the heart of the home, particularly if it is a large dining kitchen, and the heart of the kitchen is fast becoming the cooker. Right now, the must have accessory for the perfect kitchen is the range cooker. These extra wide, free standing monsters used to be the preserve of the restaurant kitchen, but now they can be found in the most humble of terrace homes. Range cookers are 300 or 400mm wider than a standard oven and have two or three ovens and a separate grill. They also have five or eight rings on the hob and normally a tall oven that can cook up to five dishes at the same time. That is the big advantage of a range cooker, you can cook a huge amount of food simultaneously. Although most families will only use a fraction of the cooker’s capability most of the time, they are ideal for dinner parties and perfect for big family get-togethers such as Christmas dinner. Dinner parties are enjoying a resurgence in popularity, thanks
to the success of TV shows such as Come Dine with Me, which might explain the growing appeal of the range cooker. Prices start from as little as ÂŁ900, although a top of the line model can run to thousands of pounds. One disadvantage of range cookers is that they use up available work surface and storage space in the base units, though 300mm is not a huge sacrifice. The other problem is that at least one of the base units will have to be replaced with a smaller unit and you will probably need a new extractor fan, which, in turn, can mean replacing wall units as well. The costs of this can soon mount up, making the whole exercise more expensive than it first seemed. However, if you are having a new kitchen fitted, you should definitely consider making a range cooker part of it. Craig Brown Estate Agent

Le Tour update Enthusiasm and preparations for Le Tour de France grow. Sunday 6th July is the date you should have in your diaries as the world’s greatest cycle event comes through Greetland and West Vale on day 2 of its journey. If you want to see how Greetland and West Vale fit into the tour go to www.letour.yorkshire.com and follow links to stage 2 which is where we are involved. The main route through Greetland comes down from Barkisland on Rochdale Road, turning right at the traffic lights at Victoria Mill and then left up Queen Street by The Queen and up through to the Blackley Road and into Huddersfield. Greetland Community Centre has a campsite already preparing to accommodate people when Le Tour comes straight past it. (For bookings contact Phil Beverly on 07718123834 or email gtlandcc@gmail.com.) Others too are getting prepared for accommodating the visitors, whilst some of us show our enthusiasm by attaching small yellow cycle adornments to our house fronts. If you want one, they are only £5 and available from Covers 33, Oldham Road, Ripponden. Meanwhile if you are a cyclist yourself why not enter a brand-new event to be held on Sunday 13th April 2014. The Skylark is a hilly Sportive set in the South Pennines of West Yorkshire. The event features several key climbs from Stage 2 of the 2014 Tour de France’s visit to the region, plus a delightful range of quiet lanes. The landscapes are spectacular throughout.
Furthermore it goes through both Barkisland and Ripponden. To find out more go to www.skylarksportive.com. For those who just want to watch the race here’s perhaps your first viewing of the kilometre stone destined for Ripponden Bank as part of the race’s features. We will bring the Greetland and West Vale markers to you as soon as we get pictures. Meanwhile the long term legacy of Le Tour is hopefully starting to develop and take shape. Le Tour Ripponden are looking for public backing for a flat, traffic-free cycle route that would link Ripponden and Sowerby Bridge. They have already held initial talks with Calderdale Council officers over the idea, which would provide a safe environment for cyclists, walkers and horse riders, would allow residents to by-pass the busy A58. It would allow families with young children to enjoy cycling in a safe environment as well as providing a practical everyday transport link between Ripponden and Sowerby Bridge. What is needed now is for local people to show there is support for the idea by completing a brief online survey at www. surveymonkey.com/s/XP5733N The more feedback, the more chance of making the idea a reality. If you are running an event as part of Le Tour then please let us know and we can include it as part of the area’s awareness of what is happening. More updates will be wheeling their way to you next month…..
